Abstract:
This study aims to put forth a new method to study the sociospatial boundaries by using georeferenced community-authored reviews for restaurants. In this study, we show that food choice, drink choice, and restaurant ambience can be good indicators of socioeconomic status of the ambient population in different neighborhoods. To this end, we use Yelp user reviews to distinguish different neighborhoods in terms of their food purchases and identify resultant boundaries in 10 North American metropolitan areas. This dataset includes restaurant reviews as well as a limited number of user check-ins and rating in those cities. We use Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques to select a set of potential features pertaining to food, drink and ambience from Yelp user comments for each geolocated restaurant. We then select those features which determine one’s choice of restaurant and the rating that he/she provides for that restaurant. After identifying these features, we identify neighborhoods where similar taste is practiced. We show that neighborhoods identified through our method show statistically significant differences based on demographic factors such as income, racial composition, and education. We suggest that this method helps urban planners to understand the social dynamics of contemporary cities in absence of information on service-oriented cultural characteristics of urban communities.

The description and symbolism of the city have a multiple and deep role in Pavese’s novels: the urban landscape is especially depicted through the intimate experience of the protagonists’ returning to their hometown after years spent elsewhere, and perceiving its certain aspects in an authentic way. Abstract:
This article explores the use of mobile phones as portable remediated sound devices for mobile listening – from boom boxes to personal stereos and mp3 players. This way of engaging the city through music playing and listening reveals a particular urban strategy and acoustic urban politics. It increases the sonic presence of mobile owners and plays a role in territorialisation dynamics, as well as in eliciting territorial conflicts in public. These digital practices play a key role in the enactment of the urban mood and ambience, as well as in the modulation of people’s presence – producing forms of what Spanish architect Roberto González calls portable urbanism: an entanglement of the digital, the urban and the online that activates a map of a reality over the fabric of the city, apparently not so present, visible or audible.

Abstract:
People who live in urban areas tend to have a higher stress level than those who live in rural areas. Level of stress can be prevented and diminished through the establishment of urban relaxation spaces within the city. Urban city planning needs to consider citizens’ preferences as potential users to obtain the maximum result. This study aims to determine the characteristics of preferred urban relaxation spaces within the city. The research was conducted through a grounded theory approach and exploratory qualitative method. Data collection was carried out based on the open-ended online survey questionnaire with a non-random sampling technique. Data was then analyzed by content analysis in three stages: open coding, axial coding, and selective coding. The finding shows that there are six aspects of preferred urban relaxation spaces: the sense of nature, facilities, tranquility, ambience, accessibility, and quality of space. Research is expected to explore new potentials in urban planning in accordance with the characteristics of its citizens.

Abstract:
Entrepreneurs in cities are prone to direct market change and urban growth in a country. Those who do not possess strong business network and strategic alliance are likely out of the game immediately. Building community entrepreneurship thus becomes critical to provide collective business network and learning, particularly for smaller entrepreneurs and new entrants, through the mobilization of social capital. This paper aims to examine how urban community institutionalizes the embedded stock of social capital in the neighborhood to cultivate sound entrepreneurial ambience parallel with the individual pursuit of profit maximization. The multiple strategies of incorporating traditional and informal inherited values into the contemporary dynamics of market and urban growth are quite successful to sustain the continuation of home-based industry in the neighborhood. The case study approach was undertaken to observe the re-emergence of local batik industry in Kampung Laweyan of Surakarta Municipality, Indonesia. The result demonstrates that social cohesion safeguarding is the key to encourage collective entrepreneurial skills development in the community albeit it does not affect much the building of stronger inter-firm cooperation.

Abstract:
The Royal Opera House has a longstanding and solid relationship with Covent Garden, which is an environmentally clustered urban area for tourism and culture rich in heritage, commercial ambience and provision of different types of performing arts. Located within the core of the area opposite its popular market place, its opulent main entrance faces a less visited precinct. This makes the building less visible to the area’s visitors raising questions about its role in the perception of Covent Garden. Given that current studies on flagship developments tend to focus on contemporary projects, this research aims to understand the influence that a well-established cultural flagship exerts in the perception of a popular area for tourism using the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden as a case study. To address this aim, a social constructivist approach was adopted and 306 semi-structured interviews were conducted with domestic and international visitors throughout six locations within the area to understand the role of the Opera House in the perception of Covent Garden. Findings indicate that cultural flagships tend to be stereotyped as grandiose freestanding buildings which is not the Royal Opera House’s case given Covent Garden’s urban density. Instead, its flagship status is related to the quality of its productions and its historical attachment to the area. This is rooted in the attraction of a diverse set of visitors and international talent leading to a cosmopolitan ambience and a strong sense of civic pride as the UK’s leading provider of opera and ballet productions.

Abstract:
The motivation for this research is a perceived gap in knowledge regarding the complex relationships between the physical form of the urban environment; its environmental performance as expressed through stocks and flows of materials and energy (urban metabolism); and its experienced physical and psychological qualities (urban ambience). The objective is to develop a practical methodological structure which, through investigating the relationships between these domains, may help inform the evaluation, design and development of more sustainable human settlements. One expression of this apparent knowledge gap is the ambiguity around the classification of urban form and identification of a suitable taxonomic framework to support analysis. Urban morphological research and practice is critically reviewed to derive a rigorous definition of the 'urban structural unit' (USU) to facilitate the subdivision and description of urban form across spatial scales. Application of this construct to a study site in Sydney, Australia provides the basis for subsequent exploration. Investigation of theoretical and applied perspectives on urban ecology, metabolism and design enables distillation of a utilitarian set of structural, functional and ambience properties of the USU. A variety of quantitative methods pertinent to evaluation of these properties is systematically examined to derive a streamlined analytical methodology, integrating hemispherical image analysis, space syntax, isovist and material accounting methods within the USU framework. The efficacy of this methodological 'toolkit' is tested in the final, empirical stage of the research, focussing mainly on the campus of the University of New South Wales. Determination of a range of material, microclimatic, ecosystemic, fractal, syntactic and isovist metrics provides a preliminary quantitative description of the campus USU in terms of its interrelated metabolic and ambience properties. This is further explained and interpreted through multivariate statistical analysis. The results suggest that the USU represents a robust framework for urban evaluation, and application of a relatively parsimonious suite of analytical methods enables a useful initial examination of the relations between significant aspects of urban form, metabolism and ambience. The outcomes of such an evaluation can directly inform built environment practice from a sustainability perspective, and also highlight areas for more detailed investigation.

The aim of this dissertation was to explore the relationship between a natural space acclimated to the supply of consumer experiences and the identification of an urban tribe formed as a result of this relationship. The survey was conducted in a tent at Boa Viagem beach in Recife, Pernambuco chosen for their physical and social differentiation from other tents arranged in the same stretch of sand beach. A literature review was made in which were addressed concepts that went beyond those treated in the traditional bibliography of Marketing, including theories arising from the Social Sciences and Architecture and Urbanism, as in the case of Urban Tribes notions and Ambience respectively. The other construct approached was that of consumption experiences. The methodology used was ethnography as this is the appropriate approach to the study of a group and understanding of their views, practices, experiences and behaviors of consumption. Through participant observation, unstructured interviews and use of photographs were explored the consumer experience of the urban tribe in that natural space acclimated. A discussion of the data led to the conclusion that the site studied formed a socio-spatial environment that enabled the identification of people with lifestyles and consumption objectives in common and that this grouping, eventually formed an urban tribe around social binding values that are highlighted within a subculture broader intake, beach.

Abstract: This thesis analyses the process of Urban spatial obsolescence in Sao Paulo focused on Santana, a neighbourhood situated in the northbound of the city. The notion of Obsolescence as a subject of research opposes what is usually called Urban decay which is imprecise and doesn¿t suit the process that leads to physical functional and economic decay of a built-up area. The concept of urban spatial obsolescence denies the notion of urban decay by taking in that this whole issue that imposes itself on the built-up areas of the city is socio-geographic. In this regard, the making and the organisation of the city is analysed as a merchandise involving a myriad of agents. It is observed in the production and reproduction of capital and the geographical space that the areas perceived as obstacles or which doesn¿t fit the global economy mindset and demands are set in the sphere of the Urban spatial obsolescence. Obsolescence in the province of industry contrasts with the one in the urban dimension demonstrating that the process takes place in the interstices of the merchandised- geographical- space production and reproduction contradictions. Santana¿s geographical contextualisation is presented highlighting the process of Obsolescence. The Urban planning carried out by the State through Sao Paulo¿s municipality from 1960 to 1980 is critically analysed and so are the interventions planned to Santana on the 90¿s to this day. By selectively intervening in the interior of neighbourhoods like Santana such interventions promote spatial obsolescence in its built-up areas. Finally, focusing on the Real estate market and its constitutive agents, from Santana the existing relations among land price built-up environment and ground rent are analysed as a means to explain and clarify the genesis and mechanisms which Urban spatial obsolescence feeds off

Abstract:
Urban forestry is a key element to maintaining the quality of life in urban centers. The existence of a broad network of trees distributed along roads and public spaces acts to promote air quality, water conservation, thermal comfort, acoustic and psychological citizens. Urban forests are able to mitigate the emissions of Greenhouse Gases (GHG) such as CO2, acting as sinks. Since its importance, new applications of remote sensing tools have emerged to assist in planning and implementation of urban forestry. The laser scanning system airborne LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging), generates a three-dimensional representation of the target object through a cloud of points georeferenced. The crossing with very high resolution sensors provides more in-depth analysis of the object and can be extracted several forest metrics such as height, basal area, and even species. The study aimed to verify the contribution of LiDAR derived points in the identification and classification of six most common tree species in Parque Municipal Americo Renne Giannetti, Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil, in order to assist urban forestry planning and management. Through supervised classification, field survey information, segmented areas, LiDAR treetop points, and a multispectral WordlView-2 image were crossed together. The classification accuracy was measured by analyzing overall accuracy and Kappa index. The LiDAR treetop points contributed to location and classification of tree species\' classes, when compared to the same process without these points. The segmentation of crowns performed by eCognition program facilitated the launch of training and test samples. ECHO classifier showed the best accuracy and Kappa index in comparison to other Multispec program classifiers. The aggregation of LiDAR data showed promise in urban forest multispectral images, increasing supervised classification overall accuracy.

The economic planning has been ineffective to solve problems generated by the growth.
Abstract:For some decades Bogotá has come experiencing a significant urban growth, factors like the forced displacement, the migrations and the few guarantees of security and economy in the rural areas, make worse this growth. More than 72% of populations are living in urban areas, in the case of Bogotá the capital of Colombia, this count with almost seven millions of inhabitants, becoming the populated city in the country, generating a great housing demand and public services that don't cover in their entirety. This investigation was carried out in five sectors of Bogotá city, with the interest of case studies, where the environmental and social situation, added to the urban growth, constitutes a complex scenario. These case studies show the situation of the natural lakes and one sector of the oriental hills of the city, evidencing the progressive invasion of illegal housing and their social and environmental effects.

Abstract:
AbstractMany forms of ambient data in cities are starting to become available that allows tracking of short-term urban operations, such as traffic management, trash collections, inspections, or non-emergency maintenance requests. However, arguably the greatest promise of urban analytics is to set up measurable objectives and track progress toward systemic development goals connected to human development and sustainability over the longer term. The challenge for such an approach is the connection between new technological capabilities, such as sensing and machine learning and local knowledge, and operations of residents and city governments. Here, we describe an emerging project for the long-term monitoring of sustainable development in fast-growing towns in the Galapagos Islands through the convergence of these methods. We demonstrate how collaborative mapping and the capture of 360-degree street views can produce a general basis for a broad set of quantitative analytics, when such actions are coupled to mapping and deep-learning characterizations of urban environments. We map and assess the precision of urban assets via automatic object classification and characterize their abundance and spatial heterogeneity. We also discuss how these methods, as they continue to improve, can provide the means to perform an ambient census of urban assets (buildings, vehicles, services) and environmental conditions.

It is a city especially commercial and agricultural whose urban morphology responds to historical, environmental and administrative circumstances, that is how, since 1851, the date on which the “cantonization” takes place begins the formation of the capital city with an urban structure formed in checkerboard that welcomes the traditional nucleus of the typical city of the ecuatorian highlands. With the development of this city, isolated neighborhoods are born out of the original urban fabric that expand in the territory, following the main road connections, eventually to fill the internal space with a morphology of contrasts, as each neighborhood or new occupations are structured individually without thinking of a city of integral formation. The longitudinal growth of the city was marked from its beginning by the river Bobo to the north-west and the river Tajamar to the south-east that keep the city within natural limits, which also provide certain environmental and landscape benefits, however in the the last few decades the city has had a significant growth that threatens an unattended and constantly expanding periphery to these environmental resources. We are facing a heterogeneous city, with problems and possibilities and attending to the idea that the city is an unfinished work, integral and sustainable urban regeneration is the basis for a reordering and a new urban approach. It is therefore proposed to study three strategic lines: the existing city, its internal circuits of connection and the adjacent nature. Establishing initial uses in the city, to occupy the predominant urban void and thus to activate the pubic space. Restructure mobility, which will strengthen the use of new peripheral road infrastructures to reduce motorized circuits in the interior, thus promoting the use of bicycles and the creation of pedestrian routes. Finally, environmental resources will again have the value of landscape and ecological wealth producing around the city a green infrastructure that contains growth and is the link of this with the countryside. Abstract:

Abstract:
To promote active transportation modes (such as bike ride and walking), and to create safer communities for easier access to transit, it is essential to provide consolidated data-driven transportation information to the public. The relevant and timely information from data facilitates the improvement of decision-making processes for the establishment of public policy and urban planning for sustainable growth, and for promoting public health in the region. For the characterization of the spatial variation of transportation-emitted air pollution in the Fresno/Clovis neighborhood in California, various species of particulate matters emitted from traffic sources were measured using real-time monitors and GPS loggers at over 100 neighborhood walking routes within 58 census tracts from the previous research, Children’s Health to Air Pollution Study - San Joaquin Valley (CHAPS-SJV). Roadside air pollution data show that PM2.5, black carbon, and PAHs were significantly elevated in the neighborhood walking air samples compared to indoor air or the ambient monitoring station in the Central Fresno area due to the immediate source proximity. The simultaneous parallel measurements in two neighborhoods which are distinctively different areas (High diesel High poverty vs. Low diesel Low poverty) showed that the higher pollution levels were observed when more frequent vehicular activities were occurring around the neighborhoods. Elevated PM2.5 concentrations near the roadways were evident with a high volume of traffic and in regions with more unpaved areas. Neighborhood walking air samples were influenced by immediate roadway traffic conditions, such as encounters with diesel trucks, approaching in close proximity to freeways and/or busy roadways, passing cigarette smokers, and gardening activity. The elevated black carbon concentrations occur near the highway corridors and regions with high diesel traffic and high industry. This project provides consolidated data-driven transportation information to the public including: 1. Transportation-related particle pollution data 2. Spatial analyses of geocoded vehicle emissions 3. Neighborhood characterization for the built environment such as cities, buildings, roads, parks, walkways, etc.
