Abstract:
A reflection intensity integration method is presented based uponab initiocalculation of three-dimensional (x, y, ω) reflection boundaries from a few physical crystal and instrument parameters. It is especially useful in challenging circumstances, such as the case of a crystal that is far from spherical, anisotropic mosaicity, α1α2peak splitting, interference from close neighbours, twin lattices or satellite reflections, and the case of streaks from modulated structures, all of which may frustrate the customary profile-learning and -fitting procedures. The method, calledEVAL-14, has been implemented and extensively tested on a Bruker Nonius KappaCCD diffractometer.

Abstract:
Aster glehniis well known for its therapeutic properties. This study was performed to investigate the effects ofA. glehnion nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in atherosclerotic condition, by determining the levels of biomarkers related to lipid metabolism and inflammation in serum, liver, and adipose tissue. Body and abdominal adipose tissue weights and serum triglyceride level decreased in all groups treated withA. glehni. Serum adiponectin concentration and protein levels of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptorδ, 5′ adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase, acetyl-CoA carboxylase, superoxide dismutase, and PPARγcoactivator 1-alpha in liver tissues increased in the groups treated withA. glehni. Conversely, protein levels of ATP citrate lyase, fatty acid synthase, tumor necrosis factorα, and 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA reductase and the concentrations of interleukin 6 and reactive oxygen species decreased uponA. glehni. Triglyceride concentration in the liver was lower in mice treated withA. glehnithan in control mice. Lipid accumulation in HepG2 and 3T3-L1 cells decreased uponA. glehnitreatment; this effect was suppressed in the presence of the PPARδantagonist, GSK0660. Our findings suggest thatA. glehniextracts may ameliorate NAFLD through regulation of PPARδ, adiponectin, and the related subgenes.

Abstract:
This study aims at shedding some light uponat the financial situation of the Algerian banks through the use of a set of traditional criteria in order to diagnose and evaluate their financial performance. This study relied on the descriptive analytical method through collecting, organizing, and analyzing information in accordance with the research requirements. This study has improved. that the financial position of the Algerian banking system is still comfortable despite all the structural and organizational imbalances that the latter suffers from. The study has also revealed some weaknesses that must be overcome in order to develop this sector. If these imbalances are overcome as soon as possible, this will be positively reflected on all the financial criteria adopted in the evaluation process.

A novel diffraction data integration method is presented,EVAL15, based uponab initiocalculation of three-dimensional (x,y, ω) reflection profiles from a few physical crystal and instrument parameters. Net intensities are obtained by least-squares fitting the observed profile with the calculated standard using singular value decomposition. This paper shows that profiles can be predicted satisfactorily and that accurate intensities are obtained. The detailed profile analysis has the additional advantage that specific physical properties of the crystal are revealed. TheEVAL15method is particularly useful in circumstances where other programs fail, such as regions of reciprocal space with weak scattering, crystals with anisotropic shape or anisotropic mosaicity,Kα1/Kα2peak splitting, interference from close neighbours, twin lattices, or satellite reflections of modulated structures, all of which may frustrate the customary profile learning and fitting procedures.EVAL15allows the deconvolution of overlapping reflections.

Abstract:
Professor Sherman A. Jackson, an authority on Islamic legal and intellectualhistory, has claimed in this article that a particular form of the secular is internalto Islam. For him, the secular is primarily a manifestation of the differentiationof spheres of human life. The Islamic secular, he argues, is revealedthrough a close reading of the boundaries that the Sharia self-imposes uponits jurisdiction and that implicitly operationalizes a type of differentiation. Hisargument rests upon a distinction between Sharia and the wider religion ofIslam. This allows him to claim that the Sharia’s self-limitation supported arecognition of other modes of reasoning and argumentation within Islam, andthat it is this space of non-Sharia reasoning that constitutes the space of thesecular within Islam. Arguing for such a relationship between Sharia and thesecular, then, leads him to point out that the distinction between the Islamicand the Western seculars lays not so much in the substance, but in their function. In other words, substantively both versions of the secular seem to supportrational, empirical thought; however, in the case of Islam, the function of thesecular is not to reduce of religion.

Abstract:
Talking about eating in the passive, as opposed to the active voice, (e.g., The cake will be eaten vs. I will eat the cake) can lead people to see the act of eating to be triggered by the food to a greater extent, leading to the continuation of past eating habits. Depending on whether or not the past habits are healthy, the motivation for healthy eating may change as a result. In study 1, writing passive sentences increased the motivation for healthy eating to the extent that people reported eating healthy in the past. Moreover, in study 2 across 127 languages spoken in 94 countries, when the acted-upons of actions (e.g., the food in the act of eating) became relatively more salient in a language, people became more likely to act on cultural habits that may be relatively healthier, decreasing unhealthy eating. The results are important for understanding the perceived role of food in starting eating as it impacts healthy eating across cultures.

Abstract:
Missed grounded analysis of Human Immune Deficiency Virus/ Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome Analysis (HIV/AIDS) at the grassroots level has led to the persistence of the pandemic in rural areas. This pseudo-experimental study aimed to explore the potentiality of Visual Problem Appraisal of AIDS and Rural Development (VPA A & RD) in supporting grassroots capacity to make informed choices through grounded analysis of the HIV/AIDS problem. Primary data were collected through VPA A & RD workshops, Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), key informant interviews, physical visits and observations. The secretariat of Matombo Division Farmers Groups’ Local Network (MVIWATAMA) was involved directly in a strategic selection of 20 (14 males and six females) workshop participants from Kifindike, Tawa, Uponda, Kiswira and Konde villages. The collected data, narratives and observations were verified and compared with relevant literature for interpretation and interrelations. The tool was found to be useful in engaging, empowering and supporting small-scale farmers’ informed choices. In addition, findings indicate that the persistence of HIV/AIDS in rural areas is due to improper analysis of the problem and review of HIV/AIDS policy. The study, among other things, recommends the establishment of an HIV/AIDS policy working paper and the incorporation of VPA potential in Tanzania universities’ curricula to enhance critical thinking among graduates.

Abstract:
A self-tuning proportional-integral control law prescribingmotor torques was tested in experiment on a threedegree-of-freedom wave energy converter. The control objectivewas to maximize electrical power. The control law relied uponan identified model of device intrinsic impedance to generate afrequency-domain estimate of the wave-induced excitation forceand measurements of device velocities. The control law was testedin irregular sea-states that evolved over hours (a rapid, butrealistic time-scale) and that changed instantly (an unrealisticscenario to evaluate controller response). For both cases, thecontroller converges to gains that closely approximate the postcalculatedoptimal gains for all degrees of freedom in a sufficientlyshort-time for realistic sea states. In addition, electricalpower was found to be relatively insensitive to gain tuning overa broad range of gains, implying that an imperfectly tunedcontroller does not result in a large penalty to electrical powercapture. Because the controller relies on an identified model ofdevice intrinsic impedance, the sensitivity of power capture wasevaluated with respect to uncertainty in the constituent termsof intrinsic impedance. Power capture is found to be relativelyinsensitive to uncertainty of 20% in constituent terms of theidentified intrinsic impedance model. An extension of this controllaw that allows for adaptation to a changing device impedancemodel over time is proposed for long-term deployments, aswell as an approach to explicitly handle constraints within thisarchitecture.

Abstract: This research paper delves into the comparative advantages of FPV (First Person View) RC (Remote Control) planes over FPV drones across various fields of application. In recent years, both FPV RC planes and drones have emerged as indispensable tools in industries ranging from agriculture and surveillance to photography and mapping. However, there remains a need to analyse and understand the nuanced differ- ences between these aerial platforms to make informed decisions regarding their deployment in specific contexts. Drawing upona comprehensive review of literature and empirical evidence, this paper explores how FPV RC planes outperform FPV drones in several key areas. These include endurance, stability, longrange capabilities, and payload capacity. Additionally, the study investigates the suitability of FPV RC planes for taskssuch as long-distance surveillance, aerial mapping, agricultural monitoring, and cinematic aerial photography. Through a com- parative analysis of the performance characteristics and practical considerations of FPV RC planes and drones, this paper aimsto provide valuable insights for practitioners, researchers, and decision-makers in various industries. By understanding the unique strengths of FPV RC planes, stakeholders can optimise their use of aerial platforms to achieve superior outcomes in their respective fields of application.

Abstract:
Susceptibility to fungal infection is commonly associated with impaired neutrophil responses. To study the mechanisms underlying this association, we investigated neutrophil recruitment to the conducting airway wall afterAspergillus fumigatusconidium inhalation in mouse models of drug-induced immunosuppression and antibody-mediated neutrophil depletion (neutropenia) by performing three-dimensional confocal laser-scanning microscopy of whole-mount primary bronchus specimens. Actin staining enabled visualization of the epithelial and smooth muscle layers that mark the airway wall. Gr-1+or Ly6G+neutrophils located between the epithelium and smooth muscles were considered airway wall neutrophils. The number of airway wall neutrophils for immunocompetent, immunosuppressed, and neutropenic mice before and 6 h afterA. fumigatusinfection were analyzed and compared. Our results show that the number of conducting airway wall neutrophils in immunocompetent mice significantly increased upon inflammation, while a dramatic reduction in this number was observed following immunosuppression and neutropenia. Interestingly, a slight increase in the infiltration of neutrophils into the airway wall was detected as a result of infection, even in immunosuppressed and neutropenic mice. Taken together, these data indicate that neutrophils are present in intact conducting airway walls and the number elevates uponA. fumigatusinfection. Conducting airway wall neutrophils are affected by both neutropenia and immunosuppression.

Abstract:
Nanoelectromechanical systems are characterized by an intimate connection between electronic and mechanical degrees of freedom. Due to the nanoscopic scale, current flowing through the system noticeably impacts upons the vibrational dynamics of the device, complementing the effect of the vibrational modes on the electronic dynamics. We employ the scattering-matrix approach to quantum transport in order to develop a unified theory of nanoelectromechanical systems out of equilibrium. For a slow mechanical mode the current can be obtained from the Landauer–Büttiker formula in the strictly adiabatic limit. The leading correction to the adiabatic limit reduces to Brouwer’s formula for the current of a quantum pump in the absence of a bias voltage. The principal results of the present paper are the scattering-matrix expressions for the current-induced forces acting on the mechanical degrees of freedom. These forces control the Langevin dynamics of the mechanical modes. Specifically, we derive expressions for the (typically nonconservative) mean force, for the (possibly negative) damping force, an effective “Lorentz” force that exists even for time-reversal-invariant systems, and the fluctuating Langevin force originating from Nyquist and shot noise of the current flow. We apply our general formalism to several simple models that illustrate the peculiar nature of the current-induced forces. Specifically, we find that in out-of-equilibrium situations the current-induced forces can destabilize the mechanical vibrations and cause limit-cycle dynamics.

ABSTRACTAllergies are mainly characterized as an unrestrained Th2-biased immune response. Epidemiological data associate protection from allergic diseases with the exposure to certain infectious agents during early stages of life. Modulation of the immune response by pathogens has been considered to be a major factor influencing this protection. Recent evidence indicates that immunoregulatory mechanisms induced upon infection ameliorate allergic disorders. A longitudinal study has demonstrated reduced frequency and incidence of asthma in children who reported a prior infection withSalmonella. Experimental studies involvingSalmonella entericaserovar Typhimurium-infected murine models have confirmed protection from induced allergic airway inflammation; however, the underlying cause leading to this amelioration remains incompletely defined. In this study, we aimed to delineate the regulatory function ofSalmonellaTyphimurium infection in the amelioration of allergic airway inflammation in mice. We observed a significant increase in CD11b+Gr1+myeloid cell populations in mice after infection withS. Typhimurium. Usingin vitroandin vivostudies, we confirmed that these myeloid cells reduce airway inflammation by influencing Th2 cells. Further characterization showed that the CD11b+Gr1+myeloid cells exhibited their inhibitory effect by altering GATA-3 expression and interleukin-4 (IL-4) production by Th2 cells. These results indicate that the expansion of myeloid cells uponS. Typhimurium infection could potentially play a significant role in curtailing allergic airway inflammation. These findings signify the contribution of myeloid cells in preventing Th2-mediated diseases and suggest their possible application as therapeutics.

Abstract:
To what extent is some poverty necessary for economic growth? Doespoverty motivate the poor to work harder, enabling them to both escape theirpoverty and in the process increase the total wealth of society? Or does povertyon balance promote those negative influences such as ill-health and a lack ofproper education that prevent the poor, and hence society, from attaining itsfull wealth potential? What effect does a redistribution of wealth from rich topoor have upon the growth rate? Would the poor manage the extra wealththereby gained in a manner more beneficial for society than when the rich managedit? How does income disparity within an economy wax and wane asgrowth takes place, and how does income disparity between economies changein the face of globalization? Perhaps most important of all, what can politicaleconomists learn from past experiences in informing policy recommendationsfor the future?Such are the questions to which two professors of economics address inGrowth, Inequality and Globalization: Theory, History, and Policy. In the firstof two discussions on the topic, phillipe Aghion from University CollegeLondon adopts a largely mathematical approach. In the second discussion,Jeffery G. Williamson from Harvard undertakes an empirical analysis. Thesetwo approaches compliment one another rather well. Two ideas are generally handed down to the modem student of economicson the relationship between growth and wealth inequality. One is based uponan incentives theory according to which inequality promotes faster growth. Theother derives from the Kuznet's hypothesis which holds that, as an economypasses through a growth phase, inequality first increases and then decreaseswith the onset of maturity. Aghion labels both of these ideas as fallacies, brieflyciting recent evidence which shows widening income inequality in the UnitedStates. His mathematical modeling further shows that, under certain circumstances, increases in inequality (as measured by the increased dispersion ofinvestment holdings among members of the society) can lead to lower growth. This is because the marginal return on investment for the poor is greater thanfor the rich. In plain language, poor people can create more wealth with anadditional unit of investment assets than the rich can. Hence, if the rich haveall the assets, society as a whole may not achieve the highest available returns. In a perfect capital market, the rich could perhaps lend or invest their surplus ...

Abstract:
AbstractInformation fusion, i.e., the combination of expert systems, has a huge potential to improve the accuracy of pattern recognition systems. During the last decades, various application fields started to use different fusion concepts extensively. The forensic sciences are still hesitant if it comes to blindly applying information fusion. Here, a potentially negative impact on the classification accuracy, if wrongly used or parameterized, as well as the increased complexity (and the inherently higher costs for plausibility validation) of fusion is in conflict with the fundamental requirements for forensics. The goals of this paper are to explain the reasons for this reluctance to accept such a potentially very beneficial technique and to illustrate the practical issues arising when applying fusion. For those practical discussions the exemplary application scenario of morphing attack detection (MAD) is selected with the goal to facilitate the understanding between the media forensics community and forensic practitioners. As general contributions, it is illustrated why the naive assumption that fusion would make the detection more reliable can fail in practice, i.e., why fusion behaves in a field application sometimes differently than in the lab. As a result, the constraints and limitations of the application of fusion are discussed and its impact to (media) forensics is reflected upon.As technical contributions, the current state of the art of MAD is expanded by: The introduction of the likelihood-based fusion and an fusion ensemble composition experiment to extend the set of methods (majority voting, sum-rule, and Dempster-Shafer Theory of evidence) used previously The direct comparison of the two evaluation scenarios “MAD in document issuing” and “MAD in identity verification” using a realistic and some less restrictive evaluation setups A thorough analysis and discussion of the detection performance issues and the reasons why fusion in a majority of the test cases discussed here leads to worse classification accuracy than the best individual classifier

Abstract:
ABSTRACTSalmonella entericaserovar Typhimurium is a Gram-negative bacterium, which can invade and survive within macrophages. Pathogenic salmonellae induce the secretion of specific cytokines from these phagocytic cells and interfere with the host secretory pathways. In this study, we describe the extracellular proteome of human macrophages infected withS. Typhimurium, followed by analysis of canonical pathways of proteins isolated from the extracellular milieu. We demonstrate that some of the proteins secreted by macrophages uponS. Typhimurium infection are released via exosomes. Moreover, we show that infected macrophages produce CD63+and CD9+subpopulations of exosomes at 2 h postinfection. Exosomes derived from infected macrophages trigger the Toll-like receptor 4-dependent release of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) from naive macrophages and dendritic cells, but they also stimulate secretion of such cytokines as RANTES, IL-1ra, MIP-2, CXCL1, MCP-1, sICAM-1, GM-CSF, and G-CSF. Proinflammatory effects of exosomes are partially attributed to lipopolysaccharide, which is encapsulated within exosomes. In summary, we show for the first time that proinflammatory exosomes are formed in the early phase of macrophage infection withS. Typhimurium and that they can be used to transfer cargo to naive cells, thereby leading to their stimulation.
