Abstract:
The business of tertiary education has become more and more competitive in recent years due to reductions in government funding and higher study fees. As the nature of the environment grows more competitive the role of marketing, previously non-existent in most universities, has grown significantly. One of the key pieces of information that would assist the marketing effort of any university is an understanding of what determines university preference. This study examines university preference in Western Australia. A form of conjoint analysis, known as Adaptive Conjoint Analysis (ACA), was used to investigate the relative importance of a number of attributes to university preference. The study involved presenting 259 Western Australian school leavers (Year 12 students) with a combination of paper and disk based questionnaires. Results indicated that the four most important determinants of university preference for Western Australian school leavers were course suitability, academic reputation, job prospects and teaching quality. The results are compared to previous research findings and their implications for the marketing of universities are discussed.

Abstract:
University course planning and scheduling is the process of determining what courses to offer, how many sections are needed, determining the best term to offer each section, assigning a faculty member to instruct each section, and scheduling each section to a timeslot to avoid conflicts. The result of this task has an impact on every student and faculty member in the department. The process is typically broken down into three major phases: course offering planning, faculty assignment to planned course sections, and course scheduling into timeslots. This thesis looks at each of these phases for the Industrial and Manufacturing department and brings them together into a decision support and scheduling system. A decision support tool is created to facilitate planning of course offerings. Operations research is applied to assign sections to faculty members using a faculty preference driven integer linear programming model in order to minimize dissatisfaction in the department. Next, the faculty-section pairs are scheduled into university timeslots using a complex integer linear programming model. This scheduling model takes into consideration the faculty member time availability and preferences and general student time slot preferences as it minimizes dissatisfaction while avoiding conflicts among labs, faculty members and courses offered for each class level.

This thesis sought to investigate students’ preferences regarding university accommodation. The object was to identify the aspects and elements of housing that students deemed most desirable. The research also aimed to ascertain which socio-demographic variables might serve as predictors of preference in student housing. The thesis focused on student housing at a university in Cape Town, South Africa. The researcher adopted a stated preference approach, applying direct measurement and conjoint analysis methods to answer the research questions. The study commenced with qualitative exploratory research, including a literature review and focus group interviews with students. This was followed by collection of cross-sectional quantitative data using person-administered, structured questionnaires distributed among students at the university. SPSS software was used to analyse a total of 457 completed questionnaires. The direct measurement results indicated that most students prioritised convenience, safety, cost and privacy when it came to choosing accommodation. The three most important attributes as ranked by respondents were having unlimited free WiFi, the inclusion of a 24-hour computer lab in the building, and 24-hour on-site security. In addition, respondents favoured the presence of a convenience shop/kiosk in the residence, followed by sharing showers with students of their own gender, and being within walking distance of campus. Preferences for some but not all the dimensions of accommodation appeared to be influenced by gender, age group and study level. When indicating their willingness to pay (WTP) for a variety of elements relating to accommodation, it emerged that the question of sharing the space in their room – their living and learning space – was very important to the students. The results showed that, apart from having unlimited WiFi and 24-hour on-site security, the aspects for which respondents were prepared to pay most concerned the private space of the individual, e.g. room privacy and room size, as well as having their own toilet and shower. WTP attributes also varied among students according to age group, gender and level of study. Results from the stated preference (conjoint) experiment analysis showed that students were most sensitive about the sharing of ablutions and number of roommates, strongly preferring private rooms and facilities, or sharing with fewer other students. Monthly rent is next most influential, followed by distance from campus. The model also showed significant differences in the preferences of students based on their gender. Research in this field is overdue because, owing to recent increases in the tertiary student population in South Africa, there is a growing shortage of student accommodation. Current and future student housing needs must be assessed, and any such assessment requires a thorough grasp of current student accommodation preferences. The results of this research thus contribute to the knowledge and understanding available to managers and developers of student accommodation regarding students’ requirements and preferences. The findings can serve as a set of guidelines for developers of student housing and as a foundation for formulating associated marketing strategies. Despite the existence of extensive research on student housing, few studies have focused on the preferences of students in developing countries, and even fewer in South Africa. This research seeks to fill this gap by increasing awareness and understanding of students’ preferences with regard to university accommodation.

Abstract:
With ad-hoc application of the traditional element of marketing failing to sustainably cushion institutions against growing competition, universities are frantically searching for ways to differentiate themselves in the long term. This study ascertains the applicability of five empirically established brand equity constructs to Ghana’s university industry. It is underpinned by a pragmatist philosophy - an objective-driven blend between the ontological and epistemological philosophical positions, and adopts a mixed-methods paradigm that combines qualitative and quantitative survey methods of data collection and analysis. For the qualitative part, 22 valid face-to-face in-depth interviews with undergraduate students selected from four universities were used while the quantitative study used 625 self-administered questionnaires from undergraduate students from twelve universities. Thematic analysis was used for the qualitative data while for the quantitative data, the structural equation modelling technique of partial least squares (PLS) was employed to ascertain relationships between the five independent student-based brand equity (SBBE) constructs on one hand, and students’ university brand preference (SUBP) as a dependent variable, on the other. Results of the analysis indicate a positive relationship between most of the SBBE constructs studied and university preference in Ghana. Four SBBE dimensions namely; university institutional reputation (UIR), university institutional image (UII), university graduate employability (UGE) and perceived institutional service quality (PISQ) recorded significant positive relationships with students’ university preference (SUP). Positive relationships were also obtained between university image and university reputation, university identity and university reputation, as well as between perceived institutional service quality and graduate employability. On the contrary, an insignificant relationship was obtained between university institutional identity (UI) and students’ university preference. The correlation analysis also indicates significant positive relationships among all the independent SBBE variables. Cumulatively, the results indicate that the SBBE concept is applicable to Ghana’s university context as the SBBE constructs and university preference are positively related. The prevalence of reputation, image, graduate employability and perceived institutional service quality in the research findings has implications for policy in the university sector. Also worthy of note is the significant positive relationship obtained between perceived institutional service quality and graduate employability; as well as between university institution identity, university institution image and university institution reputation. Much of the existing academic work on higher education branding has concentrated on brand equity’s antecedents and consequences. This study links empirically proven antecedents of university brand equity to university preference. Also, most of existing empirical research on brand equity in the university sector has focused on developed countries whose circumstances are fundamentally different from those of developing economies. This study is a novelty in the sub-Saharan African context where student-focused university branding is uncommon; and so comes as a significant contribution from Ghana, to the growing worldwide debate on university branding. While contributing a survey instrument that enhances SBBE research methodology, theoretically, the unique blend of SBBE constructs employed is unprecedented. Notwithstanding some limitations identified, this study presents an empirical model that stands to guide university management in judiciously dispensing scarce resources.

The purpose of the present study is twofold: First, to assess to what extent gender, age, body mass index, weight satisfaction, body satisfaction and coping styles predict disordered eating attitudes of Turkish university students. Second, to examine whether there is a significant difference between female and male university students&rsquo
expert preference in case of a weight problem and importance of significant other&rsquo
s opinion regarding their weight. Three instruments- Eating Attitudes Test, Coping Styles Inventory, and a Demographic Data Form were administered to 525 students from four (3 state, 1 private) universities of Ankara. A stepwise multiple regression analysis was conducted to evaluate how well emotion focused coping, problem focused coping, gender, age, body mass index, weight satisfaction and body satisfaction predicted the disordered eating attitudes of Turkish university students. A two way contingency table analysis was conducted to evaluate whether there was a significant difference between female and male university students regarding their expert preference in case of a weight problem, and whether there was a significant difference between female and male university students with respect to the importance of significant other&rsquo
s opinion regarding their weight. The variables found to be most predictive of disordered eating attitudes and entered the regression equation were weight satisfaction, gender, emotion focused coping, age, and body mass index. Of the five variables, weight satisfaction was strongly negatively related to disordered eating attitudes. Results indicated that proportions of female students preferring dietitian and fitness expert in case of a weight problem were nearly same, whereas male students prefered fitness expert, medical doctor and dietitian, respectively. Regarding the importance of significant other&rsquo
s opinion in relation to weight, there were no significant differences between two groups. Opposite sex friend&rsquo
s opinion in relation to weight was found to be the most important source for both female and male students.

Research into job preference and job satisfaction addresses the agreement between individual and institutional values leading to job choice and job satisfaction. This research assessed ten job preference and ten job satisfaction factors at the University of Guam. Ninety-one faculty members and 32 administrators completed a two-page paired-comparison questionnaire. Demographic data were also collected. Factors' hierarchy and valence positions were reported and subjected to "PCSTATS" program to determine significance among pairs. Significant differences existed in three of the four hypotheses measuring the job preferential factors: advancement, benefits, company, co-workers, hours, pay, security, supervisor, type of work, and working conditions; and job satisfaction factors: good wages, job security, interesting work, tactful disciplining, in on things, working conditions, management loyalty, appreciation, promotion, and sympathetic understanding. Additional findings were made using post hoc analysis. Results indicated that administrators perceived others' preferences to be (a) pay, (b) advancement, and (c) type of work while faculty chose (a) type of work, (b) pay, and (c) advancement. In job satisfaction administrators selected (a) promotion, (b) good wages, and (c) job security, while the faculty chose (a) interesting work, (b) good wages, and (c) promotion. Self job preference factors chosen by males and females were (a) type of work and (b) pay with (c) advancement and (c) co-workers, respectively. The top three self job satisfaction factors chosen by males and females were (a) interesting work, (b) good wages, and (c) promotion. Disagreement is evident between groups. It is recommended that the findings be used in the selection and retention of faculty members at the University of Guam.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of instrumental timbre preference and instrumental timbre on the error detection skills of undergraduate conducting students. The study sought to answer two specific questions: Is timbre preference, as determined by Gordon's (1984) Instrumental Timbre Preference Test (ITPT), a factor in the ability of undergraduate conducting students to detect errors in pitch in short melodies while viewing the score? Is the ability of undergraduate conducting students to detect pitch errors in melodic passages influenced by the instrumental timbres of the band ensemble? To answer these two questions, Gordon's ITPT and the researcher developed Test of Timbre Effect (TTE) were administered to 147 undergraduate conducting students in 11 colleges and universities in Virginia, North Carolina, and Tennessee. The TTE was designed to consist of seven different subtests, each intended to be administered to a different sample of homogeneous undergraduate conducting students. Each subtest consisted of 14 randomized test items, including two melodies designated as "target melodies" that differed only in timbre across the subtests. The effect of timbre preference, timbre, and the interaction of the two independent variables was determined by a 2 x 7 analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) of each target melody. Further analysis was conducted using a two-way multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA). Results indicated that timbre preference, timbre, and the interaction of timbre preference and timbre did not have an effect on the ability of undergraduate conducting students to detect pitch errors in short melodic passages.

Economists are still searching for methods to reduce/eliminate Hypothetical Bias (HB). Different methods have been previously applied some with success and others without. In this study, we aimed to further test the cognitive dissonance approach (CD) through a learning design method to estimate the WTP for five beef attributes: Non-quality, Kentucky Proud, Appalachian, Grass Fed and a mix of 25% Non-quality and 75% Kentucky Proud, using a one and one half bounded model. To test the CD, 881 participants from the University of Kentucky, were randomly assigned to a real/hypothetical market for a battery recycling project at first and afterwards to a hypothetical market for beef. For the battery recycling, participants were asked to donate $1, $2 or $3. For the beef market, participants were randomly assigned to a $4 or $6 for the non-quality attribute patty. Participants assigned to a $4 were afterwards randomly assigned to a $4.5, $5, $5.5 or $6 and the ones assigned to a $6 were afterwards assigned to a $6.5, $7, $7.5 and $8 for the other attribute patties. From this study, we found that the learning design was effective in reducing the cognitive dissonance or conflicts between what consumers say and their actions.

This study investigated the effects of extraversion and maintenance strategy choice on perceived relational satisfaction in marital dyads. Three research questions were addressed in this study. RQ #1 examined the relationship between extraversion and maintenance strategy preference. RQ #2 examined the various introvert/extravert (i/e) combinations to determine if satisfaction was reported higher or lower in any of the dyad combinations. RQ #3 investigated the correlation between maintenance strategy choice and satisfaction. Participants (71 married couples with diverse ages and lengths of marriage) were administered three measures for evaluation: a marital satisfaction measure, an i/e measure, and a maintenance strategy assessment. It was anticipated that individuals characterized by different degrees of extraversion would rely on different relational maintenance strategies to restore marital equity. Out of five groupings of relational maintenance strategies (assurances, positivity, reliance on social networks, openness, and sharing tasks), a statistically significant correlation was found to exist only between extraversion and reliance on social networks. The correlation suggests that the more extraverted a person is, the more he/she will attempt to use communication and disclosure techniques with common friends and family to help maintain the marital relationship. Within the context of reported marital satisfaction, no statistically significant differences were found to exist between any of the four marital pairings for i!e in marital dyads. This finding informs us that marital satisfaction, in and of itself, does not appear to have any significant relationship to the i/e dynamic. Finally, three of the maintenance strategies (positivity, networking, and assurances) were significantly correlated with marital satisfaction. The assurances strategy, in particular, was an especially strong correlate, revealing that couples who use assuring maintenance strategies in their communication report higher satisfaction in their marriages.

Preferences are very important in research fields such as decision making, recommendersystemsandmarketing. The focus of this thesis is on preferences over combinatorial domains, which are domains of objects configured with categorical attributes. For example, the domain of cars includes car objects that are constructed withvaluesforattributes, such as ‘make’, ‘year’, ‘model’, ‘color’, ‘body type’ and ‘transmission’.Different values can instantiate an attribute. For instance, values for attribute ‘make’canbeHonda, Toyota, Tesla or BMW, and attribute ‘transmission’ can haveautomaticormanual. To this end,thisthesis studiesproblemsonpreference visualization and learning for lexicographic preference trees, graphical preference models that often are compact over complex domains of objects built of categorical attributes. Visualizing preferences is essential to provide users with insights into the process of decision making, while learning preferences from data is practically important, as it is ineffective to elicit preference models directly from users. The results obtained from this thesis are two parts: 1) for preference visualization, aweb- basedsystem is created that visualizes various types of lexicographic preference tree models learned by a greedy learning algorithm; 2) for preference learning, a genetic algorithm is designed and implemented, called GA, that learns a restricted type of lexicographic preference tree, called unconditional importance and unconditional preference tree, or UIUP trees for short. Experiments show that GA achieves higher accuracy compared to the greedy algorithm at the cost of more computational time. Moreover, a Dynamic Programming Algorithm (DPA) was devised and implemented that computes an optimal UIUP tree model in the sense that it satisfies as many examples as possible in the dataset. This novel exact algorithm (DPA), was used to evaluate the quality of models computed by GA, and it was found to reduce the factorial time complexity of the brute force algorithm to exponential. The major contribution to the field of machine learning and data mining in this thesis would be the novel learning algorithm (DPA) which is an exact algorithm. DPA learns and finds the best UIUP tree model in the huge search space which classifies accurately the most number of examples in the training dataset; such model is referred to as the optimal model in this thesis. Finally, using datasets produced from randomly generated UIUP trees, this thesis presents experimental results on the performances (e.g., accuracy and computational time) of GA compared to the existent greedy algorithm and DPA.

The current work extends upon the theories of female mate preference in a novel way by examining how the interaction of race and the masculinity of males affect preference in females. In Study 1, I manipulated the facial masculinity of photographs of White, Black, and Asian males. Female participants rated the faces on attractiveness, masculinity, and age. In Study 2, nine photographs were matched on masculinity and participants made judgments on dimensions relating to dateabiltity, attractiveness, resources, masculinity, and parenting behaviors. Asian males are often neglected as potential romantic partners. A major aim of the current work was to assess if racial bias against Asian males in romantic situations are lessened with increased facial masculinity. Asian males were evaluated highly across several dimensions if they possessed high masculine facial characteristics. Medium masculine White and Black males were evaluated as the most attractive and dateable in their respective racial groups. Additionally, low masculine White and Black males were evaluated as better choices for resource and family-related attributions in their respective racial groups.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to explore individual variables affecting preferences for natural or managed landscapes. Environmental attitudes and value systems of student participants (N = 147) were assessed using the revised New Ecological Paradigm (NEP) scale and the Scenarios for the Measurement of Collectivism and Individualism (SMCI) scale, respectively. In addition, feminist orientation was assessed using the Attitudes toward Woman scale (AWS). The hypothesis that proenvironmental attitudes would be positively correlated with a preference for natural landscapes was supported. However, hypotheses that alignment with collectivist values would correlate positively with a preference for natural landscapes and that a feminist orientation would be positively correlated with a preference for natural landscapes were not supported. Changing lake conditions due to cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (CyanoHABs) have prompted inconsistent and evolving management and recreational use of Southern Illinois University’s Campus Lake. The objective of this study was to address the need for understanding lake-user demographics, CyanoHAB and Campus Lake perception, and support for potential Campus Lake programs. I accomplish this by implementing and summarizing Lake-User and Student Questionnaires, applying an Experience Use History (EUH) method to categorize respondents, and utilizing university resources to understand the effects of environmental variables on perception of Campus Lake. Respondent demographics fit typical leisure participation, where most lake users were encountered walking/jogging. Students participating in the Campus Lake Sustainable Eco-Recreation program self-report a higher familiarity with lake water quality and CyanoHABs than non-participants. There was little evidence of Nature Deficit Disorder, and no difference in support for hypothetical management action options based on this factor. Backwards stepwise regression analysis of stated choice management action support for two hypothetical lake management plans resulted in a proscriptive outcome. EUH results modeled expected sociodemographic characteristics, and Beginners showed support for increasing recreation activity to support hypothetical lake management. Perceptions of Campus Lake water quality status were best correlated with visible algal growth, Temperature-Heat-Solar radiation-Wind index, and mean prior 24 hr relative humidity variables. This Campus Lake survey should be used to diversify lake accessibility and recreation programs targeted towards minority and special interest groups. Surveying of natural resource user perceptions, especially in the case of shifting quality, is a valuable tool to monitor and capitalize on public interest.

The impact of personality type on question preference is an area of new endeavor. It is the purpose of this study to determine if a relationship exists between the Sensing and Intuiting dimensions of personality as measured by the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and the questioning preference of students. A Chi Square analysis of the data revealed a trend. Frequency distributions were used to determine the direction of the trend. Both the Sensing and the Intuiting subjects showed a tendency to follow type with regard to question preference. In other words those subjects showing a Sensing preference on the MBTI tended to choose questions that matched their type preference. The same trend was observed for the Intuitive subjects as well. The data seem to indicate that there is a relationship between personality type and question preference, but more research is needed to describe and define the relationship.

This thesis consists of fundamental research into the effect that a display’s overall density has on a user’s performance and preference while performing simple tasks using a window-styled computer application specifically developed for this study. This study sought to reevaluate previous findings by exploring their application in the more current, present-day environment. In this research, overall density was considered to be a measure of a screen’s complexity and was examined at three different levels. Users performed a series of tasks using only one of three available screens with different density levels. The same tasks were performed by all users to determine if different density levels exhibit any effect on the user’s performance (as measured by completion time and accuracy) or preference. The outcome of these trials demonstrates that overall density and complexity play an important role in a user's performance and acceptance of a screen.

Materials and methods: The total of the respondents were 160 parents (77 % are female and 78 % belong to the age range of 30 years and over). Parenting styles are assessed using the self-paced questionnaire Parenting Style Dimension Questionnaire (PSDQ). The preference of the behavior management techniques was evaluated by means of an informative sheet of own elaboration where six techniques are included according to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) of 2015. As father's age in intervals of years, sex of the father, educational level, number of children, sex of the children, age of the child in years and order of birth of the children. Chi Square and Fisher's Exact Test were analyzed for bivariate analysis and for the numerical variable used Kruskal Wallis. Results: There is no association between preference of behavior management technique and parenting styles. The prevalence of authoritative parenting style and a greater preference for communication techniques were determined, the latter regardless of the parenting style he manages at home. Conclusions: The preference of the behavior management technique is not associated with the parenting styles. However, the prevalence of communication techniques leads us to conclude that more studies should be carried out around it.
Objetivo: Evaluar la asociación que existe entre la preferencia de las técnicas de manejo en Odontopediatría y los estilos de crianza de los padres de niños con edades entre los 5 y 13 años que son atendidos en un Centro Universitario de Salud de la ciudad de Lima, Perú. Materiales y métodos: Se encuestó a un total de 160 padres de familia, de los cuales el 77 % era de sexo femenino y el 78 % pertenecía al grupo etario de 30 años a más. Los estilos de crianza se evaluaron por medio del cuestionario autoaplicado Parenting Style and Dimension Questionary (PSDQ); y la preferencia de las técnicas de manejo de conducta se evaluó por medio de una ficha informativa de elaboración propia, en la cual se incluyeron 6 de las 13 técnicas que se emplean de acuerdo con Behavior Guidance for the Pediatric Dental Patient de la American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) que fue publicada en el 2015. Las variables registradas fueron: edad del padre en intervalos de años, sexo del padre, nivel educativo, número de hijos, sexo de los hijos, edad del niño en años y orden de nacimiento de los hijos. Luego se utilizó la prueba Chi-cuadrado y la prueba exacta de Fisher para realizar el análisis bivariado, y se aplicó la prueba de Kruskal Wallis para la variable numérica. Resultados: No existe asociación entre la preferencia por una técnica de manejo de conducta y los estilos de crianza, puesto que en la investigación se observó una prevalencia del estilo de crianza autoritativo y una mayor preferencia por las técnicas de comunicación, indistintamente del estilo de crianza que se manejaba en las casas. Conclusiones: La preferencia de la técnica de manejo de conducta no está asociada a los estilos de crianza. Sin embargo, la prevalencia de las técnicas comunicativas permite concluir que deben realizarse más estudios en torno a esta.

Föreliggande studie ämnade att undersöka vilka jobbattribut studenter på Jönköpings Tekniska Högskola (JTH) samt Hälsohögskolan (HH) i Jönköping värderade i valet av framtida arbetsgivare. Vidare undersöktes även huruvida kön och skola påverkade hur studenter värderade jobbattribut. Forskningsstrategin har utgått från en deduktiv ansats och grundade sig i kvantitativ design där en enkät valts som undersökningsmetod som distribuerades vid föreläsningar vid de båda högskolorna. Urvalsmetoden bestod i huvudsak av ett slumpmässigt klusterurval med inslag av ett bekvämlighetsurval vilket genererade 346 enkätsvar. Envägs ANOVA, Mann-Whitney U samt Univariat analyser utfördes för att analysera data. De fem högst värderade jobbattributen bland studenterna var arbetsuppgifter jag tycker om, trevliga kollegor, en säker och trygg anställning, bra arbetsförhållanden och möjligheten till att använda mina färdigheter. En signifikansnivå på p= .05 tillämpades och signifikanta skillnader visade sig i hur både kön och skola värderade enskilda jobbattribut. Vid kategorisering av jobbattribut visade det sig att inre jobbattribut värderades högre av studenterna än de yttre jobbattributen. Resultatet av studien bidrar med värdefull information om hur studenter i Jönköping värderar olika jobbattribut i valet av framtida arbete och kan användas av organisationer för att kunna rekrytera den målgrupp som efterfrågas.
The aim of this study was to examine what job attributes students at The School of Health and Welfare (HH) and The School of Engineering (JTH) in Jönköping preferred in the choice of their future employer. Furthermore, it was investigated whether sex and the choice of school influence students’ job attribute preferences. The study had a deductive research approach and quantitative data were collected by a delivery and collection questionnaire, which was handed out in classes at JTH and HH. The selection method consisted mainly of a random cluster sample with some elements of a convenience sample and the findings in this thesis are based on 346 students preferred job attributes conducted through a survey. One-way ANOVA, Mann-Whitney U and Univariate analysis was made to analyze collected data. The top five job attribute preferences among students was “work I like doing”, “friendly people to work with”, “a secure job”, “good working conditions”, and “opportunities to use my abilities”. A significant level at p= .05 was applied and showed significant differences in separate job attributes for both sex and school. By categorizing the job attributes the results showed that the internal job attributes was more preferred than the external job attributes. The result of this study contributes valuable information by which job attribute students prefer in their choice of their future employer and could be used by organizations to identify the target group which is inquired for.

Conventional theories of diencephalic amnesia have focused on a single thalamic region as a critical factor in the origins of anterograde amnesia. A more contemporary view is that different thalamic regions might contribute in unique ways to normal diencephalic functioning and therefore provide distinct contributions to the learning and memory. This study directly compared the effects of AT and MT lesions on a spatial pattern separation task, a spatial working memory task and a conditioned place preference task. AT lesions but not MT lesions produces deficits on the spatial working memory task on a cheeseboard. No group AT, MT or control rats acquired a conditioned place preference on the AT/MT lesion conditioned place preference task. Furthermore, this study determined the effect of systematic procedural variations on control rats in a conditioned place preference control task. The only variation that acquired a condition place preference was a separate arms conditioned place preference with one pre-exposure and three training trials. The results of this study provide new information regarding the role of thalamic lesions in spatial memory and suggests a revision of the current theories regarding learning and memory to incorporate the thalamic involvement that has been highlighted

Aim: The aim of this study is to determine the factors that may influence the purchasing behaviour of the students of the University of Gavle with regards to green products. This study aims to answer the question if the following factors such as: gender of the students, price of the green product, level of green awareness and the green behaviour of the students and whether they have a significant difference with the purchasing behaviour of the students. Design/methodology/approach: The framework is structured on the bases of examining the correlation between the following variables, green behaviour, gender, level of green awareness of the respondents and the price of the product with regards to the purchase of green products. Data was collected via randomly distributed questionnaires and an online survey. SPSS version 22.0 was used to analyse the results of the questionnaires through correlation analysis and linear regression analysis. Findings: Our findings show that the genders of the respondents, level of green awareness and the green behaviour have a significant, positive influence on their purchase behaviour, whilst the price of the green product has a negative influence on the purchasing behaviour of the students of the University of Gavle. Limitations and Suggestions for further research: The limitations of the study were the time, size of the sample group as well as the language of the questionnaire. To enhance the representation of the sample, future research should aim at targeting a larger sample group and a wider variety of variables should be examined. Originality: The study examines a variety of factors other than the green awareness of the respondent, that influences the purchasing behaviour of the respondents and this information could provide important results for companies when it comes to marketing a green product.

The goal of this study was to investigate Taiwanese university learners' readiness for online language learning, as well as their preferences and perceptions for this type of learning. This study undertaken was both quantitative and qualitative in nature, and was underpinned by a mixed methods philosophy. The data collection methods used for the purpose of the study included: semi-structured focus group interviews and a questionnaire survey. The findings were descriptively categorized and analysed according to emergent themes. These findings were then interpreted and compared to the literature related to this study. The overall objectives of this dissertation were to gain a general picture of the readiness that Taiwanese university learners have for online language learning, as well as a deeper understanding of the interrelationship between their preferences and perceptions, and how this affected their online learning readiness. There are nine universities in central Taiwan which provide the online language courses that met the requirements for this study; however, only three of them had agreed to participate in this study. Therefore, this study underscored the need to conduct research of a similar nature, with an increased• number and type of participants, using the readiness scale developed from this study. It is hoped that this dissertation wilt provide a lens, from which further fieldwork on this topic could be conducted.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The study investigated the exercise preferences of female university students participating in exercise modes presented at the local gymnasium and their expectations of the outcomes of such participation. Secondly, the study aimed to determine the most important reason for their participation and whether this was satisfied by their choice of exercise mode. A third aim was to determine other reasons that contributed to the selection of exercise environment and mode. The size of the research group of the pilot study was 210 (n=210). For the final longitudinal study, over a period of three years, it was 985 (N=985). The study population was selected on a basis of convenient sampling, availability and interest among young female gymnasium members, (aged 18 to 27 years). Their participation was voluntary. Original questionnaires were constructed for the purpose of the study to provide general demographic and physical characteristic information of the participants, their exercise preference and choice of exercise mode, reasons for participation in particular exercise modes, time spent on physical activity, frequency of attendance of exercise sessions, exercise motivators, barriers to exercise, medication and supplementation prevalence, health problems and smoking. The questionnaire was completed in a five to 10 minute time slot before the commencement of exercise classes at the gymnasium. Information required on the questionnaire was verbally explained to the participants during the initial few minutes of data capturing. Guidance was given for each section of the questionnaire during the five to 10 minute period allocated for completion. Data was captured on Microsoft Excel spreadsheets and the analysis was performed using Statistica for Windows (Statsoft SA-2008). Descriptive statistics were used to analyse and present the data. The results of the study indicated that most (34.4%) young female students who regularly attended group exercise sessions at the gymnasium preferred participating in the exercise modality punchline (a boxing aerobic modality), with the aim of losing weight (45%) and improving their general fitness (24%).

Growing urban populations and the increasing prevalence of the millennial generation are profoundly changing personal travel behaviors and patterns. As a result, cities, planners, and developers must understand and act upon the shifting preferences and expectations of these public transit users in order to align costly public transit services with user needs in efficient ways. While public transit systems are becoming an increasingly vital part of urban life, few jurisdictions have considered the need to tailor these systems to millennials – those most likely to incorporate public transit into their daily lives. This paper examines the travel behaviors of University Students engaged in a forced travel intervention caused by a sudden relocation of their work site. The change in work location encouraged the use of a free public transit system as means of commuting. Longitudinal survey results, taken pre and post-intervention, indicate statistical differences between transit preferences and actual habits related to transit use and other modes of travel. Survey findings suggest that there is a statistically significant difference between the stated willingness and actual travel behaviors of public transit users and of drivers, and that modal shifts can assist in overcoming the attitude/behavior split related to personal travel among millennials.

O desenvolvimento do campo de pesquisa em Finanças Comportamentais nos mostrou que por diversas vezes violamos postulados de racionalidade estrita utilizados pela Teoria da Utilidade Esperada e demais ferramentais ortodoxos de análise de decisões sob incerteza. Neste contexto, este trabalho utilizou como estrutura analítica alternativa as formas funcionais derivadas da Teoria do Prospecto e, tendo em vista esse modelo, foi replicado um experimento consolidado na literatura em uma amostra composta de alunos da Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio), sendo o objetivo estimar por máxima verossimilhança os parâmetros de risco e preferências temporais dos respondentes. Os resultados encontrados foram coerentes com outras evidências presentes na literatura, cabendo ressaltar que, para estes respondentes e talvez por sua formação, a modelo tradicional de desconto contínuo se mostrou uma aproximação melhor do que o previsto.
The development of Behavioral Finance literature has shown us that for several times we violate the postulates of strict rationality assumed by the Theory of Expected Utility and other orthodox tools of decision analysis under uncertainty. In this context, this paper adopts the Prospect Theory as its analytical framework and, with this model, an experiment present in the literature of this field was conducted with a sample of students from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio) which the purpose was to simultaneously estimate their risk and time preferences by applying a maximum likelihood approach. The results obtained were consistent with other present in the literature, and it should be pointed out that, for these respondents and perhaps because of their background, the orthodox continuous discount model proved to have a better fit than expected.

Method: A qualitative study is carried out based on primary data; the primary data was collected through semi-structured interview with twenty of University of Gavle Students by the use of face to face interview. Result & Conclusion: The study finds out that, the role of word of mouth as extrinsic factors serves as the highest motivating factor, while prestige serves as intrinsic factors of motivation. Thus, word of mouth and quality are the highest motivating factors that influence University of Gavle students to prefer a particular mobile phone brand. This finding of this research will help mobile phone marketers and managers to develop strategy on how to capture Swedish consumers to prefer their companies brand products. Suggestion for future research: Future research could be done by considering different or more widely target groups instead of students of University of Gavle. Different perspectives can be combined in future research thus, further research can be conducted by more broadly with a variety of age groups and in a wider area. Also, further research could include comparison between mobile phone brand types and may consider different type of products. This will give understanding of the different segments in mobile phone market, and to determine if these different segments can cause any variety and change of motivating factors. Additionally, further research could be conducted in the long time period, thus can be explored in detail benefiting from the longitudinal study and could be include observations to understand long-term variables on mobile phone market and effects of motivating factors. Hence, this could bring more effective conceptualization of influencing factors of smartphone buying consumers and helps to achieve a more in-depth research. More so, the same study can be conducted with a combination of different Universities in Sweden. And also, same research can be carried out using quantitative research method for future research. Contribution of the Study: This study contributes with knowledge on which motivating factors influence customers brand preferences, and how these factors affect their purchase decision.

Correction of oral errors in foreign or second language classrooms has been an issue of great concern. Although the literature on error correction is abundant, the studies on student reaction to this pedagogical practice are few. This study investigated the preferences for correction of classroom oral errors among university students of English in Japan. Data were collected from anonymous questionnaires. The study examined the students' attitudes toward the views about correction of oral errors which have been controversial among foreign and second language educators. The study also investigated the students' preferences for correction of different types of oral errors (e.g., grammatical errors) and particular types of correction as well. The results showed that the students had a strong positive agreement regarding teacher correction of oral errors. They showed a tendency toward agreement concerning peer correction, and a slight tendency toward agreement regarding selective error correction. Concerning overcorrection of errors, they showed a tendency toward disagreement. There was no significant difference among the different levels of oral English proficiency. The students had positive attitudes toward the correction of all five types of errors listed in the questionnaire: grammatical errors, phonological errors, and errors regarding vocabulary, pragmatics, and discourse. Pragmatic errors received the strongest preference. A significant difference among the proficiency levels was observed in only preference for correction of discourse errors. Preferred methods of error correction were: 1) the teacher gives the student a hint which might enable the student to notice the error and selfcorrect, 2) the teacher explains why the response is incorrect, 3) the teacher points out the error, and provides the correct response, and 4) the teacher presents the correct response or part of the response. The methods disliked were: 1) the teacher ignores the student's errors and 2) the teacher repeats the original question asked of the student. A significant difference among the groups was observed in preference for only one error correction method: the teacher presents the correct response or part of the response.

Research on psychotherapy has consistently revealed that a portion of the variance in positive outcomes can be explained by therapist variables. Examination of clients preferences for certain therapist characteristics has led to inconsistent results further complicated by differences in participant characteristics. This study on therapist characteristics examines relationships between student-preferred therapist characteristics and demographic information provided by participants in their survey responses. Therapist characteristics under investigation include counseling style and approach to treatment, level of experience and training, and demographic information. This study also validates an online survey as a quality method of investigating university students preferences for therapist characteristics through the use of a one-parameter Rasch Item Response Theory model of analysis. Results from this study suggest that the Web-based survey employed was a quality method of collecting data on student preferences for therapist characteristics. Results also indicate that student prefer a well educated therapist of advanced training who is a good listener, makes them feel comfortable and is nonjudgmental. Finally, results suggest that student preferences for certain therapist characteristics are influenced by student demographic information and previous counseling experiences.

To ensure a long-term successful product brand, it is important to build brand awareness, to reach the consumer’s mind, encourage a consumer to develop a preference and eventually provide a positive contribution to consumer decision-making. Therefore, there is a need to understand and identify the role of brand awareness in the purchase process. An understanding of students as consumers and their brand awareness is important to marketers, particularly as students are recognised as a specialised market segment for a variety of products. The research focused on identifying the differences, if any, in brand awareness and its role in students’ purchase of sportswear clothing and sportswear shoes (high-involvement products) and coffee (a low-involvement product). A drop-off survey was used to collect the required empirical data from a convenience sample of 450 students enrolled at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. The empirical findings showed that students were more aware of sportswear clothing and shoe brands than of coffee brands. Advertising played an important role in the awareness of sportswear shoes and clothing brands, but seemed unimportant in the case of coffee. Brand elements were found to enhance brand awareness. The brand name was important for coffee, while the name and the logo played a role in students’ awareness of sportswear brands. The study deduced that differences in brand awareness between high-involvement and low-involvement products exist among the students. Marketers thus need to choose appropriate strategies to create and increase brand awareness for the different products.

A mail survey of recreational rock lobster licence holders has been conducted annually since 1986. The results from this survey have been used in the management of the recreational rock lobster fishery in Western Australia. Mail surveys are susceptible to non-response and recall bias. The key to determining useful estimates of fishing catch and effort is to minimise both biases. Telephone recall surveys, with high response rates, effectively eliminate nonresponse bias. However, they still suffer from recall bias when the recall period is greater than two months. Telephone diary surveys are free of non-response bias and recall bias and provide the most accurate estimates of effort and catch. In the 2001/02 season three independent surveys were conducted to estimate the recreational catch and fishing effort of the 37,000 fishers licensed to fish for rock lobsters.

Outer beauty is one of the most important things for women through the ages. The record of the time of the warring states shows that the king of Chu loves wasp-waisted women.( Xing, 2011) Besides, physical attractiveness is recognition of appearance that makes people happy. (Chen,2008) This report is to find out what shape and the actual size of female that people prefer. In the past, researchers will use pictures of beauties or celebrities or even the silhouette as an implement to test people’s preference of outer beauty. However, these studies were limited to the expression ability of participation since they can’t visualize the tests. SHIOU CHUAN WU says that,” people can select their favorite figure more accurately, if we provide the 3D holographic projection.” In this report, we provide drawing software for our participation to adjust shape of the 3D model on the screen. They can see different angles of the body parts from chest, waist, bottom and seven other body parts of the model and to change them arbitrarily. Turning, enlarging or even narrowing, what you see is what you get. The information that our participation provides was integrated and analyzed into the shape of female that college students prefer. After the test, we can get not only the subjective feelings of participation but also the objective data for our report.
