Flaherty, Kate. "Cathcart vs Brooke: a Touring Actress and a Trial of Public Private Identity in the Australian Colonies." New Theatre Quarterly 33, no. 1 (January 10, 2017): 47–58. http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/s0266464x16000622.

Abstract:
In this article Kate Flaherty examines the sensational contractual dispute that arose between Gustavus Vaughan Brooke and Mary Fanny Cathcart during their Australian colonial tour in 1855. She follows Brooke's attempt to use his theatrical repertoire to achieve and consolidate a legal victory over Cathcart, but argues that this strategy ultimately backfired and elicited a form of judgement by the theatregoing public that countered the judgement handed down by the Supreme Court. Conversely, coverage of the case in Australian newspapers is identified as shaping reviews and sharpening the edge of the stage dramas. The article provides a focused instance of the complex interplay of dramatic works, cultural politics, gendered power, and publicity that characterized nineteenth-century theatrical touring. Kate Flaherty is a lecturer in English and Drama at the Australian National University, a member of the International Shakespeare Conference, and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She is author of Ours as We Play It: Australia Plays Shakespeare (University of Western Australia Press, 2011), as well as numerous essays on how Shakespeare's works play on the stage of public culture.

Henningsgaard, Per Hansa. "Outside traditional book publishing centres : the production of a regional literature in Western Australia." University of Western Australia. English and Cultural Studies Discipline Group, 2008. http://theses.library.uwa.edu.au/adt-WU2008.0255.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis provides a study of book publishing as it contributes to the production of a regional literature, using Western Australian publishing and literature as illustrative examples of this dynamic. 'Regional literature' is defined in this thesis as writing possessing cultural value that is specific to a region, although the writing may also have national and international value. An awareness of geographically and culturally diverse regions within the framework of the nation is shown to be derived from representations of these regions and their associated regional characteristics in the movies, television and books. In Australia, literature has been the primary site for expressions of regional difference. Therefore, this thesis analyses the impact of regionalism on the processes of book production and publication in Western Australia’s three major publishing houses— a trade publishing house (Fremantle Press), an Indigenous publishing house (Magabala Books), and an academic publishing house (University of Western Australia Press). Book history, print culture studies and publishing studies, along with literary studies and cultural studies, roughly approximate a disciplinary map of the types of research that constitute this thesis. By examining regional literature in the context of its 'field of cultural production', this thesis maintains that regionalism and regional literature can avail themselves of a fresh perspective that shows them to be anything but marginal or exclusive. Regionalism has been a topic of peripheral interest, at least as far as scholarly research and academia are concerned, because those who are most likely to be affected by and thus interested in the topic, are also those who are most disempowered as a result of its attendant dynamics. However, as this thesis clearly demonstrates, access (or a lack thereof) to the field of cultural production (which in the case of print culture includes writers, literary agents, editors, publishers, government arts organisations, the media, schools, book clubs, and book retailers, just to name a few) plays a significant role in establishing and shaping an identity for marginalised 3 constituencies. The implications for this research are far-ranging, since both Western Australia and Australia can be understood as peripheries dominated in their different spheres (the 'national' and the 'international', respectively) by literary cultures residing elsewhere. Furthermore, there are parallels between this dynamic and the dynamic responsible for producing postcolonial literatures. The three publishing houses detailed in this thesis are disadvantaged by many of the factors associated with their distance from the traditional centres of book publishing, while at the same time producing a regional literature that serves as a platform from which the state broadcasts its distinctive contributions to the cultural landscape and to a wider understanding of concepts such as space, place and belonging. These publishing houses changed the way in which Australians and others have come to know and think about 'Australia', re-routing public consciousness and the national imagination.

Abstract:
This research looks at the way Australia is portrayed in the Western European press, particularly in the light of Australia's recent emphasis on being a clever country, within the Asia Pacific region. The research is based on a quantitative and qualitative analysis of all articles explicitly referring to Australia, in seven newspapers from Belgium (2), France (2), Germany (1) and the United Kingdom (2), over a 6 month period. The main hypothesis was that those newspapers without Australian based correspondents or stringers picture Australia in a stereotypical way and that "news" in those papers, instead of giving "news", reinforces existing ideas and images held of Australia. My research supports the hypothesis, but also uncovers the very important role played by editors at home. They decide what is important, what is news and their choice will go to consonant "news". The research shows that newspapers in Europe largely portray Australia's older images, with its kangaroos, koalas and beaches peopled by sportsmen. Australia is largely portrayed as an almost untouched country inhabited by animals to be found nowhere else, and by people (mainly white Anglo- Saxon males) reputed for their friendliness, as well as for their laziness and sometimes their strangeness. "Newer" images of Australia promoted by the Australian government (e.g. Australia as a clever country and part of the Asia-Pacific region) get relatively little coverage in the Western European press.

Abstract:
The O-tube facility, designed and established at the University of Western Australia, is an innovative closed loop flume in which a random storm sequence can be reproduced via control of a large pump system. The O-tube facility is capable of simulating hydrodynamic conditions near the seabed and the interaction with seabed sediment and any infrastructure that is resting on it. The purpose of carrying out the O-tube calibration described in this paper is to obtain the relationship between the motor rotation movement and the flow velocity generated in the O-tube, such that any required storm history within the performance envelope of the O-tube can be reproduced. A range of flow velocities and the corresponding pump speeds were measured under steady current, oscillatory flow and combined flow conditions. It was found that the relationship between the pump speed and the flow velocity varies with the oscillatory flow period. Based on the pump characteristic curves and O-tube system curves, the correlation between the motor speed and the flow velocity was derived by applying hydraulic theory and the principle of energy conservation. The derived correlation is validated by reproducing a wide range of target storm series, including a (1:5.8) scaled 100-year return period storm from the North West Shelf of Western Australia in 40 m water depth.

Abstract:
Local scour around a submerged vertical circular cylinder in steady currents was studied by laboratory experiments. The experiments were conducted under live-bed scour conditions. Only one median sediment size of d50 = 0.40 mm was used in the experiments with a uniformity parameter of d85/d15 = 1.42. In some of the tests, time-developments of scour depth at the stagnation point of the cylinder were measured using the conductivity scour probes. Three-dimensional (3D) seabed topography around each model cylinder was measured using a laser profiler developed at University of Western Australia. The experimental results showed that the scour depth increased with an increase in cylinder height. The development rate of scour depth increases if Shields parameter increases.

Abstract:
Full-flow penetrometers such as the T-bar and ball are now widely used in offshore site investigations to measure penetration resistance and then infer the strength properties of the seabed. To provide additional data on flow properties of the soil and increase the number of parameters that can be obtained from these tests, ball penetrometers fitted with pore pressure transducers, known as piezoballs, are now being used. Depending on the soil characteristics and rate of penetration, the soil conditions during penetration may vary from undrained to fully drained. The drainage condition during penetration will influence both the measured penetration resistance and excess pore pressure response and therefore influence any parameters interpreted. This paper examines the effect of drainage condition on piezoball measurements during penetration in a muddy silt sample collected from offshore Australia. Tests were conducted in the beam centrifuge at the University of Western Australia using a miniature piezoball, with pore pressure measurement at the equator position. The effect of drainage condition was examined by conducting tests at various rates of penetration, ranging from undrained to fully drained conditions. Methods of interpreting the results of a partially drained penetration test in order to deduce the undrained penetration resistance are also discussed.

Abstract:
A number of oil and gas projects encounter significant costs to achieve subsea pipeline stabilization using present methods. The standard procedure to estimate pipeline stability is to consider the worst combination of amplitude and direction of the current and waves that the pipe will undergo during its operational lifetime. To calculate the hydrodynamic forces a common approach is to consider only the component of the fluid velocity perpendicular to the pipe axis according to the independence principle. The hydrodynamic coefficients are then taken from a case where the fluid flow is perpendicular to the pipe for similar flow characteristics. A substantial amount of research has been carried out to assess the hydrodynamic forces on pipelines with the current and wave directions collinear and perpendicular to the pipe. However, only limited information is available on pipeline hydrodynamic forces for highly oblique current and wave flow. A Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis was carried out to investigate the effect on pipeline hydrodynamic forces for highly oblique collinear and non-collinear current and wave directions. The work was carried out as part of the STABLEpipe JIP (1) (with participation by Woodside, Chevron, The University of Western Australia, and Wood Group Kenny) which aims to achieve a step-change improvement in the approaches to stability design, especially on mobile or erodible sea beds.

Abstract:
Model tests were conducted on two 1:100 scaled models of a typical concrete gravity substructure at the University of Western Australia. The two models had dimensions 0.5m length × 0.5m width with the first model being a sealed closed bottom box of height 0.1m and the second model being an open bottom box with skirt length of 0.1m. The open bottom model had the capacity to hold an air cushion with dimensions 0.49m width × 0.49m length × 0.08m height. Each model was floated at a constant draft of 0.1m and tested in water depths ranging between 0.03m (shallow) and 0.8m (deep). The environment comprised of regular waves with periods ranging between 0.6s and 3.5s and amplitude of 0.08m–0.02m. To quantify the dynamic response the heave and pitch motion of each model were measured. The model test results were compared with a theoretical solution based on long wavelength, linear wave assumptions applied to a box shaped floating vessel without an internal free surface. Results show that experimental trends compare reasonably well with analytical solution. Added mass values were predicted from heave and pitch decay tests. The results show that introducing air cushion support into a CGS increases the pitch response, while having little effect of the heave motion. The theory is also used to delineate regions of safe and unsafe tow-out operations of the air cushion structure.

Abstract:
Providing higher education students with opportunities to participate in peer-review feedback activities may facilitate interaction between students and enhance academic skills. Such activities are reported to help students transition from passive to active learners whilst increasing social connectedness and developing employability skills. This research aimed to evaluate student perceptions of a peer-review of assessment process offered in an undergraduate Health Science unit at Edith Cowan University in Western Australia, and their subsequent unit satisfaction. Before students began the peer-review process, a sample assignment was used to coach them on how to provide constructive feedback. They subsequently prepared a draft of their assignment for peer-review, and then reviewed the work of another student. Pre- and post-surveys were administered to assess students’ perceptions about the usefulness of the peer-review activity. Thirty-two students completed the pre-survey wherein 94% (n=30) reported the peer-review coaching helped them prepare their own assignment and 85% (n=27) reported learning how to provide constructive written feedback. Twenty-one students completed the post-survey, 76% (n=16), reporting they modified their own assignment as an outcome of their peer-review participation. Many respondents also reported improvements in their critical thinking (76%; n=16) and written communication skills (62%; n=13). Overall unit satisfaction increased exponentially.

From City-like Settlement to Industrial City: A Case of Urban Transformation in Huwei Township. Chih-Hung Chen¹, Chih-Yu Chen¹ ¹ Department of Urban Planning, National Cheng Kung University No.1, University Rd., East Dist., Tainan City 70101, Taiwan ROC E-mail: chihhungchen@mail.ncku.edu.tw Keywords (3-5): Industrial City, City-like Settlement, Morphological Process, Town-Plan Analysis, Sugar Refinery Conference topics and scale: City transformations City-like Settlement (German: Teilweise Stadtähnliche Siedlungen) (Schwarz, 1989; Sorre, 1952) plays an important role in the course of civilization, especially the development of industrial cities. Accordingly, this study utilizes Town-Plan Analysis (Conzen, 1960) to deconstruct the relationships between industrialization and settlement formation in order to illustrate the common origin of cities in Taiwan as a result of the emerging economy at the turn of the 20th century. The industrial city of Huwei, known as the “sugar city” with largest yields of cane sugar in Taiwan, had the largest-scale sugar refinery in pre-war East Asia (Williams, 1980). The city has grown and transformed with the factory during the four phases of morphological periods, which began at the establishment of the sugar refinery and worker housing in the middle of the fertile flooding plain in western Taiwan. The spatial arrangement was directed to operational and management efficiency, characterized by the simple grids and hierarchy of layout along the riverside. As the industry enlarged, the new urban core was planned to support the original settlement with shophouses accumulated in the small grids. Followed by postwar modernism (Schinz, 1989), the urban planning again extended the city boundary with larger and polygonal blocks. In the fourth phase, however, the sugar refinery downsized, leading to the conversion of the worker housing and the merging of the factory and the city that slowly brought to its present shape. The morphological process results in the concentric structure from the sugar refinery, providing valuable references for the preservation of the sugar industry townscape, and unveils the influence of industrialization as well as the special urban development pattern in Taiwan. Abstract:
Experimental studies were carried out at the Institute for Ocean Technology, Canada, in collaboration with the University of Western Australia (UWA) to assess the response of a moored 1:60 scaled Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) model in bi-directional seastates. The seastates comprise of a regular swell approaching in the head sea condition, and a JONSWAP wind sea approaching at various angles. The FPSO was moored in position by four spring-loaded mooring lines attached to an internal turret about which the model could weathervane. Previous papers by the authors have described the unpredictable yaw instability of the FPSO driven by long period swells, which was evidenced in the experiments. This creates difficulties in comparing motions from unidirectional and bi-directional seas, because the headings alter the response. However, the mooring tensions are relatively immune to yaw instabilities and this paper discusses effects of bi-directional seas on the mooring tensions. Numerical simulations are conducted using a time domain analysis software which simulates the motions of floating and moored structures in response to irregular seas. Simulations based on the software when compared with model tests at 45, 60 and 90 deg separation between the sea and swell shows reasonable agreement in terms of mooring tensions. Simulations are then conducted for a range of separation angles, and the effects of bi-directionality are further evaluated. It is found that a linear addition of the individual seastates can produce non-conservative results, which reinforces the fact that bi-directional seastates are important considerations for offshore operations of an FPSO.

Abstract:
The behavior of pipelines, cables and umbilicals on rocky seabeds has to date received little research attention. This is despite the marine renewable energy and oil and gas industries relying on these ‘pipes’ to cross a variety of rocky seabed types in the presence of extreme metocean conditions. Present design solutions are challenging and costly, yet there remains a track record of in-service failures. This paper forms part of a wider research effort being undertaken by the University of Western Australia (UWA) into pipe behavior on rocky seabeds. This work includes the effects intermittent gaps have on hydrodynamic forces, the effect of seabed roughness on enhanced boundary layer thickness and the validity of existing hydrodynamic force models for small diameter cables. In this paper, the lateral resistance of pipes on rocky seabeds is investigated using both physical and numerical testing of model pipes over artificially-created rocky seabeds. Four model pipes of varying diameter have been displaced laterally over 1 m square model rocky seabeds, with a range of pipe to rock diameters. The lateral resistance of the physical pipe tests were recorded using load cells and a digital data-logger. Analysis of the physical test results has enabled comparison to (and refinement of) numerical models as well as improved understanding of the importance of different parameters. Our results show peak frictions above 6 arising under conditions where interface friction is only about 0.3, which contrasts dramatically with the friction value of 0.6 nominated in F109. This work contributes towards generation of new design methods suitable for application to field conditions.
