Full text
Abstract:
Using Computational Fluid Dynamics Simulations, the flow in the new University of Sydney closed circuit wind tunnel has been analyzed prior to the construction of the tunnel. The objective was to obtain a uniform flow in the test section of the wind tunnel while keeping the pressure losses over the tunnel as low as possible. This was achieved by using several flow-improving components such as guide vanes, screens, a honeycomb and a settling chamber. The guide vanes were used in the corners and in the diverging part leading into the settling chamber, giving a significant improvement of the flow as they prevent it from taking undesired paths. The settling chamber is used to decelerate the flow before it is accelerated when leaving the settling chamber, a process which reduces the turbulence in the flow. Screens were used in the settling chamber to further improve the flow by imposing a pressure drop which evens out differences in the flow speed and reduces the turbulence. The honeycomb, which is situated in the end of the settling chamber, makes the flow more uniform by forcing it to go in only one direction. A uniform flow was obtained using three screens and one honeycomb together with the guide vanes and the settling chamber.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to elaborate a reliable approach for the design of seismic retrofitting interventions for masonry structures. In order to achieve this objective, the presented work has been organised in two parts. The first part focuses on the description of the key aspects of the proposed approach. Firstly, it has been reported the contribution of the Italian research activity, to which the approach owes its origin. Then, the methodological procedure to be adopted for the design of the correct retrofitting intervention has been described, with particular attention to the case of monumental masonry structures. Finally, some of the most common retrofitting interventions and two methods to evaluate the structural response have been reported. In the second part, the reliability of the presented approach has been verified by applying the methodological procedure to the case study, the Great Hall of The University of Sydney. The effectiveness of the proposed retrofitting interventions have been assessed by creating a Strand7 model of the Great Hall, in order to evaluate its structural response. The obtained results show that the proposed retrofitting interventions for the case study are extremely effective and ultimately proves the reliability of the proposed approach.

Full text
Abstract:
The research focuses on the study of the collection of 71 Greek and Latin inscriptions kept at the Chau Chak Wing Museum of the University of Sydney (New South Wales, Australia), the most important of the southern hemisphere. The inscriptions were almost all collected by Sir Charles Nicholson, one of the founders of the first Australian University, the University of Sydney, during two travels he made through Italy (Rome and Naples) in 1857 and 1858, with the declared intention to acquire a collection of antiquities which would be donated in 1860 to the newborn University in order to institute an academic Museum: the Nicholson Museum. The main aim of this research is to analyse, according to the parameters of contemporary Epigraphy, the entire collection and to update its last published catalogue, which dates back to 1948. At the same time, it focuses on the reconstruction of the collection's history, from the study of the inscriptions' context of provenance to the analysis of their life cycle in the Nicholson Museum, today transferred into the new Chau Chak Wing Museum. This dissertation is the result of a year of preparatory study and 3 months of on-field research at Sydney in Spring 2022, as part of an Erasmus+ ICM mobility.

Forrester, Linda. "Youth generated cultures in Western Sydney." Thesis, View thesis, 1993. http://handle.uws.edu.au:8081/1959.7/440.

Full text
Abstract:
The study focuses on the types of cultural practice that are, in the main, generated by the young people themselves (hereafter referred to as youth generated cultures) who fall within the age group of 14-20 yrs of age. The research was undertaken in the Western Sydney region, which is the largest expanding population in Australia, and is regularly defined as a socio-economically disadvantaged region, therefore, an important factor within this study is the issue of class determinants. The paper explores the youth generated cultural practice of graffiti, skateboarding, street machining, and street dancing. These creative practices challenge traditional notions of culture and the arts, however the young people also employ strategies of an aesthetic nature in their creative process. Youth generated cultures are actively engaged in criticism through the use of instrumentalist aesthetics such as Monroe Beardsley describes. The thesis proposes that youth generated cultures have, in a united and structured manner, provided for themselves a framework of economic and pedagogical support that has afforded them a place within the cultural mainstream without the recognition or approval of mainstream cultural establishments. It is argued that these particular youth generated cultures are not rebellious or destructive subcultures, that they are creative in nature and have been established primarily to produce and display their creative cultures. Youth agency is essential to the character of these youth generated cultures and it is this agency that is under challenge from the cultural hegemony. The young people involved in youth generated cultures demand that any account of their cultural practice must also accept the agency of youth as fundamental to their cultural status.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is the first substantive analysis of unregistered proprietary horse racing (or pony racing, as it was popularly known) in Sydney, an extremely popular form of the sport conducted weekly or more frequently between 1888 and 1942. However, a number of researchers working on its periphery have contributed commentary and judgements to a discourse on it that has existed since the establishment of the Sydney Turf Club (STC) in 1943. Their writings have created an orthodox view of the sport that suggests inter alia it was a cultural expression of a ‘needy and greedy’ element of the working class and that its constituency was excluded from that of the racing of the Establishment, conducted by the Australian Jockey Club (AJC). This orthodoxy also holds unregistered racing was subject to endemic corruption, haphazardly conducted, inexpensive to attend, provided poor money and was in general a burlesque of AJC racing. The thesis engages this discourse and tests the tenets of the orthodoxy through examination or re-examination of relevant primary sources, including parliamentary papers, contemporary newspapers and journals, race books and other documents, administrative records, photographs, and the memoirs and transcripts of oral history provided by human participants.

BELL, Pamela. "'SIDERE MENS EADEM MUTATO': NINETEENTH-CENTURY ART COLLECTIONS AND ARCHITECTURAL STYLE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY." University of Sydney, Fine Arts, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/397.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis seeks to examine the nineteenth-century art collections and architectural style of the original buildings at the University of Sydney in order to demonstrate ways in which visual material may be employed to shape public perception of an institution. I shall argue that the architectural style of the original university buildings was specifically chosen with particular aims which extended beyond the mere establishment of a tertiary institution for the colony. I will also argue that the style shaped the character of the institution, contributed to the maintenance of law and order in the colony, linked the colony more firmly than hitherto to the mother country and provided social benefits for the founders of the institution. The instant history and character thus imposed upon the institution was reinforced by the assembly of a portrait collection in emulation of other collections of portraits at leading institutions of the colony and the mother country, including the Oxbridge universities. Once the building proclaimed that the institution was comparable with the great universities of the world, the subjects of the portraits at the university could be placed in the class of founders of a great historical institution, thus at the same time enhancing the reputation of the institution and the individuals. The construction of an indentity through visual images was extended by the benefactions of Sir Charles Nicholson, the principal donor of works of art to the university in the nineteenth century. I argue that his intentions in relation to his collections were didactic but were also concerned with the entrenchment of the imperial hegemony over the colony, and again with the enhancement of his personal repuatation. This analysis shows how, by a complex of personal ambition and aspiration for the colony, the style of the buildings and the art collections formed were used to establish the colony as civilized and the new university as a bastion of English tradition.

Zakrzewski, Dorothea. "Perceptions of privatisation and corporate performance : a study of Sydney airport stakeholders." Thesis, View thesis, 2009. http://handle.uws.edu.au:8081/1959.7/43585.

Full text
Abstract:
Privatisation reforms have been embraced by different nations and implemented in various industry sectors since the 1980’s. Airports have been privatised with airport operators taking a more commercial positioning into account whilst catering for individual stakeholders. It is claimed that airport privatisation has led to the emergence of new industry players enabling these airport operators to raise additional capital, improve efficiency, reduce costs, generate new revenue streams and engage in new commercial airport investments in the market economy. It is claimed that the transfer of ownership and management of airport enterprises into private hands generated more value and efficiencies. A question remains however about the actual impact of airport privatisation on stakeholder groups. This study aims to provide insight to the affirmation that airport privatisation has not only led to a change of the airport business in general but to explore the perceptions of key stakeholders and whether they have benefited from privatised airport operations. The undertaken study therefore consisted of two parts: Firstly, the existing claims and theories sympathetic with the privatisation reforms were explored. This entailed a thorough investigation as to who the key stakeholder groups of Sydney are which was followed by exploring the airport privatisation objectives as perceived by the key stakeholders of Sydney airport five years post privatisation. Secondly, a theoretical model referred to as the Stakeholder Airport Performance Assessment Model (SAPAM) that examines airport performance from stakeholders’ perspectives, was proposed. In particular as airport performance is frequently assessed by focusing on financial performance and little attention is given to combining an analysis of financial measures together with non financial measures; especially when airports are complex entities exhibiting monopolistic attributes and having extensive social responsibilities. The airport performance assessment tool was based on the thoughts of Kaplan and Norton (1992) Balanced Scorecard idea. Stakeholder airport performance attributes were derived for assessing privatised airport performance from the service quality as well as the financial and environmental perspective of airport users is discussed. The findings were derived using a qualitative paradigm by combining interviews and archival content analysis whilst analysing the impact of Sydney airport privatisation on its stakeholders. The Leximancer qualitative research software together with Nvivo v7 assisted the data analysis. The research findings emphasise that the privatisation of Sydney Airport has led to airport operations being primarily driven by the ‘bottom line’ of profitability. The commercial orientation of Sydney Airport, its overall business growth and the ongoing airport land development, although criticized to an extent, were perceived to be the most notable outcomes of the Sydney Airport privatisation; each having an impact on stakeholder operations. In addition, the outcomes of this study are relevant to stakeholder theory, resource-based theory and contingency theory. The results demonstrate the importance of stakeholder recognition by corporations, thus linking it to performance management. The results can be seen as contemporary contributions to the global privatisation debates, as indicative in the literature review there is no privatisation theory as such. The privatisation debate is thus set to continue on the more ideological grounds of competition, free-markets and other relevant factors. The findings emphasise further that privatised airports have become considerably more accountable to the public and its stakeholders. The developed Stakeholder Airport Performance Assessment Model (SAPAM) proposes that the impact of privatisation reforms on society should be validated by assessing privatised airport performance through the eyes of stakeholders in line with the framework of the Balanced Scorecard and stakeholder theory. Overall, this study has made significant contributions in terms of adding to the body of knowledge valuable information for both private and public sector industries and firms in determining relevant measures and models for performance assessment as a result of privatisation. The need expressed in the literature for more studies on the Australian privatisation experience and in particular the air transport industry and the benefits to its stakeholders was the driver behind this doctoral study on airport privatisation.
