Dunn, Kelly M. "Investigating Parenting Style and College Student Grit at a Private Mid-Sized New England University." Thesis, Johnson & Wales University, 2018. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10750334.

Abstract:

Higher education has experienced an increase in parent engagement in the lives of college students (Arnett, 2014). Recognizing the presence of families, researchers have investigated the relationship between parenting style and college success variables such as academic performance (Miller & Speirs Neumeister, 2017), wellness (Coccia & Darling, 2017), and transition (Love & Thomas, 2014). In recent literature, studies have focused on grit and its relation to college success (Bowman et al., 2015; Duckworth et al., 2007); yet, research on the relationship between parenting style and grit is lacking.

This quantitative correlational study investigated the relationship between college student self-report of grit (Duckworth & Quinn, 2009) and parenting style (Baumrind, 1971b). The study was guided by the following research questions: 1. Is there a relationship between parenting style and college student grit? To what extent and in what manner does parenting style explain the variance in grit? 2. Is there a relationship among parenting style, college student grit, and demographics? To what extent and in what manner does parenting style and demographics explain the variance in grit?

Data were collected from undergraduate students (N = 974) through a questionnaire. The results revealed authoritative parenting was positively correlated (single r = .206, p = .003, ES = small/med; parent 1 r = .220, p < .001, ES = small/med; parent 2 r = .177, p < .001, ES = small/med) and permissive parenting was negatively correlated (single r = –.269, p < .001, ES = small/med; parent 1 r = –.119, p = .003, ES = small; parent 2 r = –.151, p < .001, ES = small/med) with grit. The regression models revealed less permissive parenting behavior and more authoritative parenting behavior explained the variability in grit for all parenting units (single r2 = .102, p = .011, ES = small; parent 1 r2 = .058, p = 0.009, ES = small; parent 2 r2 = .050, p < .001, ES = small). First- generation status, Hispanic, Black and non-Asian ethnicity were also significant in several models.

The resulting actions filled a gap in the literature finding a relationship between parenting style and college student grit. The results may help college administrators understand how parenting styles may relate to how students approach academic and career goals. The results may help K-12 administrators and Departments of Children and Families structure programming on how parenting style may support children for passion and perseverance towards long-term goals.

Abstract:
This thesis is a study of Durham University, from its inception in 1831 to the opening of the College of Physical Science in Newcastle in 1871. It considers the foundation and early years of the University in the light of local and national developments, including movements for reform in the church and higher education. The approach is holistic, with the thesis based on extensive use of archival sources, parliamentary reports, local and national newspapers, and other primary printed sources as well as a newly-created and entirely unique database of Durham students. The argument advanced in this thesis is that the desire of the Durham authorities was to establish a modern university that would be useful to northern interests, and that their clear failure to achieve this reflected the general issues of the developing higher education sector at least as much as it did internal mismanagement. This places Durham in a different position relative to the traditional understanding of how universities and colleges developed in England and therefore broadens and deepens the quality of that narrative. In the light of the University's swift decline, and poor reputation, from the mid-1850s what were the ambitions of the founders and how did this deterioration occur? Were the critics' accusations against the University - principally that it was a theologically-dominated, inadequate imitation of Oxford, bound to the Chapter of Durham and ruled autocratically by its Warden - based on fact or prejudice? And if the critics were wrong, what were the factors that lead to the University's failings?

Abstract:
This thesis reports on a study undertaken at the Dixson Library, University of New England. The purpose of the study was to develop an understanding of users of online public access catalogues (OPACs). The understanding gained from the study will assist in the development of improvements to the Library's OPAC, and increase user ability to access information from the OPAC. The study replicated the user questionnaire of the Online Patron Access Project, sponsored by the Council on Library Resources (CLR) in 1981/83. The questionnaire was modified slightly to suit conditions at the Dixson Library. The study addressed nine research questions relating to the users, their reactions, attitudes, experiences and problems. The user task and their suggestions for improvement were also addressed. The study formally tested three propositions between the variables user task, success and attitudes in relation to OPAC users. The findings show the analysis of the responses for the population as a whole, and, where relevant, for eight groups of student respondents based on their academic affiliation. The student population was of particular importance because of the preponderance of external students at the University of New England. The differences in the findings between the groups of students were discussed, and where possible, explained. The three formal propositions were tested by carrying out Chi square tests for the values of each variable. Nine significant relationships were found. Comparisons were made between the Dixson Library findings and those of the CLR study. Recommendations and conclusions were drawn from the study, including areas for further research.

Full text
Abstract:
In the early eighteenth century Scottish universities played a crucial role in the education of dissenters in both England and Ireland, particularly in the training of ministers. Glasgow University was predominant in this role throughout the first half of the century and was a central feature of the network of reformed churches across the British Isles. In the second and third decades of the eighteenth century Glasgow University was troubled by two particular problems. The first was student unrest, based on the students’ attempts to revive their ancient right to elect the rector, much of it led by students from England and Ireland. The second stemmed from accusations of heresy against the professor of divinity. Both of these processes were linked to the wider questions of non-subscription that animated so much dissenting thinking in both England and Ireland at the same time. They linked in too with a widespread fear of the transmission of Arian doctrine that some thought was being concealed by non-subscription. This thesis examines the development of New Light or non-subscribing views amongst dissenters in England and Ireland as part of a movement across the British Isles that was underpinned by the central relationship that many church leaders had with the University. Glasgow avoided the taking of sides in the subscription debates but neither did it exclude the non-subscribers and, after the initial debates had cooled towards the end of the 1720s, affirmed the permissibility of their approach by some of its actions.

Abstract:
Background: First described 20 years ago by Notomi et al. (1999), the loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay is robust, rapid and straightforward, yet retains high sensitivity and specificity. These features have seen the LAMP assay and the inclusion of a reverse transcriptase (RT-LAMP) implemented for a broad range of molecular diagnostic applications extending from infectious diseases, including detection of the original SARS-CoV-1 virus. The advantages of RTLAMP include using different reagents than RT-qPCR, the potential for direct processing of samples without the need for prior RNA extraction and an extremely rapid turn-around time. Several groups have now described different RT-LAMP assays for detection of SARS-CoV-2 RNA. Therefore, the aim of this study is to assess the feasibility, sensitivity and effectiveness of LAMP technique in detecting SARS-CoV-2 in different type of samples. Method: New England Biolabs (NEB) LAMP master mixes were used. Six set of primers specific to SARS-CoV-2 were obtained from IDT. The reaction mix consisting of LAMP master mix, primer working solution and a sample was incubated at 65⁰C and results were collected after 30 mins. Results: In just 30 mins, we were able to detect the virus without any prior sample processing. Our primers were able to detect up to 100 copies of the viruses, which is comparable to the RT-PCR that we currently use in our lab. The primers were tested against all other coronavirus and they have shown 100% specificity to the novel SARS-CoV-2 virus. Both the florescent and calorimetric master mixes were able to detect the virus in all tested samples: clinical, animal and environmental. Conclusion: LAMP is a fast reliable technique that could be used as a quick screening method for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 in different settings and using different collection medium.

Abstract:
"We present an old process developed more than a hundred years ago at American universities. It means professional, journalistic and academic forms of writing. It also includes poetry and narrative forms. Creative writing has always been at the heart of university education. Today, there are more than 500 bachelor's degree programs and 250 master's degree programs in this subject in the United States. In other fields of study, it is mandatory to enrol in this subject. After World War II, it came to Europe, first to England and later to Germany. Here, ""... since the 'Sturm und Drang' (1770-1789) of the early Goethe period, the autodidactic poetics of the cult of genius prevailed. The teachability of creative writing has been disputed ever since and its dissemination has therefore always had a hard time in Germany"" [von Werder 2000:99]. It is rarely found in the curricula of German universities. At the Dresden University of Applied Sciences, we have been practicing it for five years with great response from social work students. They learn different methods: professional writing for partners and administration, poetic writing for children's or adult groups, scientific language for their final thesis and later publications. Although we offer it as an elective, more than 80% of students choose it. Final papers are also written on these creative topics or using the methods learned. ""Writing forces economy and precision. What swirls chaotically around in our heads at the same time has to be ordered into succession when writing"" [Bütow in Tieger 2000:9]. The winners of this training are not only our former students! Children in after-school programs and youth clubs improve their writing skills through play. Patients in hospitals work on their biographies. People who only write on the computer discover slow and meaningful writing, activating their emotional system. Therefore, this paper will show how clients benefit from creative writing skills of their social workers and what gain other disciplines can expect as well."

Abstract:
The University of New England initially embarked on a trial of online supervised exams in early 2017. In the several years since this pilot has expanded considerably, with over half of unit exams offered online by the end of 2019 and almost a quarter of students opting-in. As the global COVID19 crisis emerged the institution transitioned suddenly to a fully online exam period, with the first fully online exam period conducted in June 2020. Given COVID19 has caused many institutions to consider a similar shift the UNE exams team present an account of this project and advice for other institutions on this transition.

Abstract:
Anti-doping education is among the most important tasks of the specialized organizations in this area. A while ago the emphasis was placed on testing actions aimed to identify if the athletes use forbidden substances. Nowadays, the national anti-doping agencies, independently or in partnership with different organizations of the formal (preuniversity or university level) or non-formal education system, have expanded their methods and means designed for anti-doping education. Web-based learning methods in anti-doping education is a new trend in this educational field specific to performance sport. The obvious advantages of these methods convinced the anti-doping organizations to develop and to use on-line tools. Some of the most relevant e-learning platforms are ADel (Alpha, Coach true, Sport Physician Kit On line, Ado Kick Start, Parents' Guide to Support Clean Sport), edu.anad.ro (Romanian Anti-Doping Agency), e-Learning Germany (National Agency from Germany), e-Learning England (AntiDoping Agency from England), iLiftClean Education Platform (Weight Lifting International Federation). The paper intends to emphasize the awareness level of the anti-doping training programs based on web learning methods among Romanian athletes. For this purpose, we organised a survey based on a questionnaire, with the following variables: level of knowledge among athletes about the on-line educational anti-doping tools, the frequency of accessing these tools, the level of efficiency perceived by the athletes who use them, the advantages and disadvantages perceived by the athletes. The research was applied to 150 athletes, aged from 15 to18 and practicing different sports (track and field, artistic gymnastics, handball, swimming, judo, wrestling, volleyball, ice-hockey, ice-skating, cross country skiing, alpine skiing, escalade, snowboard), who accepted to participate in this survey. The conclusions of the paper emphasize some characteristics of the anti-doping education among Romanian athletes and allow us to recommend possible measures to improve the anti-doping educational actions of the Romanian Anti-doping Agency.

Abstract:
This paper describes the development of a mini-module focused on sustainability and timber engineering as a component of a strategic partnership designed to broaden Transnational Education, increase staff/student mobility, and further develop industry and community links within two universities. Edinburgh Napier University (ENU) draws students from around the world and is internationally recognised for timber construction and wood science. The New Model Institute for Technology and Engineering (NMITE) is a new higher education provider in England pioneering an innovative approach to engineering education integrating business, engineering, the liberal arts, and professional skills. ENU and NMITE leveraged these strengths to develop a strategic partnership that brings together staff, students, industry, and the community for opportunities that create impact beyond traditional learning approaches. This can be seen through the development of a Sustainability Enrichment Week hosted by NMITE’s Centre for Advanced Timber Technology (CATT) and attended by ENU Master’s in Environmental Sustainability students. Students investigated interfaces between buildings, humans, and nature through experiential learning based around the construction of the CATT building, which has been developed as a Living Lab. Each day featured activities aligned to identified learning outcomes and was themed around one of five sustainability competencies: systems thinking, values thinking, strategic thinking, future thinking, and collaboration. The Sustainability Enrichment Week also served as a trial for a short course soon to be offered as part of a Timber Technology, Engineering, and Design programme. This project could be a model for other universities seeking to create similar strategic partnerships and learning experiences.

Abstract:
This paper considers the transplantation of the Western concept of architecture to China set against the backdrop of Western colonization from the mid-19th century. With the increasing presence of foreign populations, the urgent demand for a considerable number of new building types greatly spurred the Chinese construction market. Beyond consideration of the physical artifacts, this paper focuses upon the story behind the scenes, the mode of architectural production, and particularly how the intricate relationships among different professionals helped to shape the physical world. The West China Union University, constructed from 1915 through 1940s in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, serves as an apt case study to exemplify this process. A cooperative product of five missionary organizations from the United States, Britain and Canada, this project was designed by a British architect whose practice was based in England, super-intended on-site by an American architect, and constructed by local Chinese workmen. How were these professionals able to communicate and cooperate over such a long distance and across huge cultural gaps in architectural and building practice? This case study demonstrates that the relations among different actors in the field of architecture, specifically the tripartite interactions among client, architect and builder, were far more complex and nuanced than we might otherwise assume. This paper offers critical insights into the dramatic changes in the system of Chinese architectural practice under the sway of Western influence during the first half of 20th century.

Abstract:
Background: Bibliometric analyses allow detecting citation trends within a field, including assessments of the most cited journals, countries, institutions, topics, types of study, and authors. Objectives: To perform a bibliometric analysis of the 100 most cited papers within infectious meningitis research. Methods: The 100 most cited publications and their data were retrieved from Scopus and Web of Science during 2019. Results: The New England Journal of Medicine had the greatest number of articles (27) and citations (12,266) in the top 100. Articles were mainly published after the late 1980s. Bacteria were the most discussed agents (72 articles and 26,362 citations), but Cryptococcus sp represented the most-discussed single agent (16 articles and 6,617 citations). Primary research represented 70 articles and 25,754 citations. Among them, the most discussed topic was Clinical Features and Diagnosis/Outcomes (22 articles and 8,325 citations). Among the 27 secondary research articles, the most common type of study was Narrative Review (18 articles and 5,685 citations). The United States was the country with the greatest number of articles (56) and citations (21,388). Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Yale University had the greatest number of articles (six each), being CDC the most cited (3,559). Conclusions: The most cited articles within meningitis research are primary research studies, more frequently published in high IF journals and by North American institutions. Bacterial meningitis comprises the majority of publications. The articles were mainly published after the AIDS pandemic and after the implementation of the main vaccines for meningitis.

Abstract:
The abundance of consistent high strength winds off the world’s coastlines and the close proximity to dense population centers has led to development of innovative marine structures to support wind turbines to capture this energy resource. Off the US coast, 60% of the offshore wind lies in deep water (greater than 60m) where the development of Floating Offshore Wind Turbine (FOWT) hull technology will likely be required in lieu of fixed bottom technology such as jacket structures. The United States National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and the offshore wind community commonly refer to 60m as the transition point between fixed bottom structures and floating structures due to economic reasons. Floating wind turbines deployed in the harsh offshore marine environment require the use of materials that are cost-effective, corrosion resistant, require little maintenance and are highly durable. This has led the University of Maine to develop a concrete hull technology called VolturnUS for full-scale 6MW FOWTs. In this work, experimental testing was conducted to verify the performance of the concrete under operational, serviceability, and extreme loading conditions as required by the American Bureau of Shipping Guide for Building and Classing Floating Offshore Wind Turbines. The testing included structural testing sub-components of the hull and served as experimental verification of American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) concrete design methodology which is currently approved and being used to design the first commercial scale FOWTs in the United States. Two 6MW wind turbines supported on VolturnUS concrete hulls will be used for the New England Aqua Ventus I project. The project is planned to be deployed and connected to the grid by 2019 in the Northeast U.S. and is funded by the US Department of Energy.
