Abstract:
This thesis examines the perceptions of lecturers, graduates and employers of personal and interpersonal skills development in an accounting degree at Victoria University. The development of personal and interpersonal skills in students in higher education has been the focus of discussion amongst accounting educators, accounting practitioners and the accounting profession for many years. There is a general consensus on what skills are necessarily sought to ensure success within the accountancy profession but very few previous studies on how those personal and interpersonal skills are being developed. This research study presents a research framework which emphasises the complex interrelationships between an accounting curriculum, accounting lecturers, accounting graduates and employers of graduate accountants and their perceptions of how personal and interpersonal skills are developed. A case study approach, combining archival, qualitative and quantitative methods, is used to investigate how a Bachelor of Business Accounting degree in one Australian university facilitates personal and interpersonal skills development. The case study results indicate that the curriculum, as the vector for skills development, has both explicit and implicit references to skills outcomes. Graduates� perceptions of many of the personal and interpersonal skills considered in this study are closely related to the curriculum findings. However, there appears to be a lack of convergence between lecturers� perceptions, the curriculum and graduates� perceptions. Employers generally agree that graduates display most of the personal and interpersonal skills, albeit at a low level, in the workplace. There are curriculum implications arising from the results of this research for accounting academics who design and develop accounting programs where the value of graduates� personal and interpersonal skills are acknowledged. As a first step, academics need to improve accounting curricula by explicitly integrating personal and interpersonal skills in their subjects. Communicating to students the explicit nature of personal and interpersonal skills development and making them aware is the next step.

Abstract:
Computer technology is an important tool that enhances people’s learning, improves their education and influences the development of society. There is considerable research in Western countries studying attitudes towards computers but few studies have been performed in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). Therefore, it is worth measuring students’ attitudes to computer use in KSA as, if students are able to develop a positive attitude towards this during their educational years, they will increase their learning and knowledge, their future work will benefit and in turn this will benefit the national economy. The aim of this study is to investigate the associations between Saudi University students’ knowledge of English, their gender, computer experience, parents’ encouragement of use computer usage, place of residence and general attitudes towards the use of computers in their daily life. The main contribution of this study is the investigation of the attitude of both teachers and students within different regions of Saudi Arabia, using a large quantitative data set triangulated with qualitative data. The results show that Saudi undergraduate students have a positive attitude toward computers, and there are no significant gender differences between male and female students in their attitudes. This study also suggests students in the capital city have a more positive attitude towards computer than students from small cities. There is also a strong relationship between attitudes towards computers and English language skills, computer experiences, parental encouragement and undergraduate students’ computer attitudes. A majority of Saudi students in the study don’t have access to computers at university, especially females. The qualitative study conducted with school teachers shows gender differences, with male teachers having a more positive attitudes towards computers, and more computer experience and skills. The evidence presented in this work suggests that the educational use of computing in KSA requires an increased availability of computers; provision of computer workshops for students and educators starting from early education; levels to higher education and encouragement of students to use computers in learning methods in order to be successful.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine if significant differences existed in attitudes of international students concerning college withdrawal. Data collection involved 200 freshmen international students from two universities in Texas. Two questionnaires were distributed to the students to determine attitudes toward college withdrawal. The instrument used to score the attitudes was the Purdue Master Attitude Scale. The analysis of variance was used for the statistical evaluation. The statistics indicated there was no significant differences between the students tested in the study and that the students had favorable attitudes toward college and unfavorable attitudes toward college withdrawal. Based on the findings of this study, universities should devise an extensive counseling and orientation program in order to provide students opportunities to complete their college education.

The main purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of perceived social support, psychological distress, prior help-seeking experience, and gender on attitudes toward seeking psychological help of university students. In addition to the main purpose

knowledge about the psychological counseling services of the METU Health and Guidance Center were investigated. The sample consisted of 417 (223 female, 194 male) undergraduate students of Middle East Technical University. The data was gathered using the scale of Attitudes Toward Seeking Psychological Help-Shortened (ASPH-S), the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) and a demographic information form. It was found that nearly half of the participants (47%) had knowledge about the psychological counseling services of the METU Health and Guidance Center. Friends were the most frequently stated sources of help (59%) in times of need for personal problems. Females had more positive attitudes toward seeking psychological help than males. Students of the Faculty of the Arts and Sciences, and students of the Faculty of the Education were found to have more favorable attitudes than of the Faculty of Engineering students. Finally, hierarchical regression analysis showed that perceived social support, prior help-seeking experience, and gender significantly predicted attitudes toward seeking psychological help. However, psychological distress was not associated with help-seeking attitudes.

As a global language, English has spread to the extent that non-native speakers now outnumber native speakers. In the last few decades, a body of research literature has emerged demonstrating the decreasing global relevance of native English speakers, and calling for a re-evaluation of English Language Teaching (ELT) practices, in order to better prepare students for using English as a global lingua franca. However, students’ needs and attitudes towards English and ELT must be fully investigated before curriculum changes can be suggested. Many attitude studies conclude that students favour native varieties of English. However, such research often uses single research methods and very few relate attitude studies to ELT. Further research is required regarding students’ attitudes towards English, the factors influencing these attitudes and how they relate to ELT. Moreover, few studies have investigated these proposals in any depth or explored the impact of course instruction in the global uses of English on students’ attitudes. This thesis is an investigation of Japanese university students’ attitudes towards English and English teachers in relation to the use of English as a lingua franca (ELF). In order to widen the scope of understanding, this research employed a mixture of quantitative and qualitative measures to obtain data about the participants and their attitudes. Thus, questionnaires, interviews and focus groups were used. Following the introduction, chapter two and three provide a literature review. Chapter four outlines the methodology, and the results are presented in chapters five, six and seven. Chapter eight presents a discussion of the results and the implications of this study for teaching English are discussed in chapter nine. The findings suggest that English is seen as a language belonging to native English speakers and those students want to learn native English. However, the results highlighted that a number of factors influence students’ attitudes. The findings also demonstrated that the study of Global Englishes influenced students in a number of ways, including their motivation for learning English, attitudes towards varieties of English and attitudes towards English teachers. It encouraged them to question notions of ‘standard English’, was helpful for future ELF communication and raised their confidence as English speakers. In sum, the findings of this study provide an empirical basis for a re-evaluation of ELT and suggest that Global Englishes Language Teaching is something that should be further investigated.

Student counselling services, typically located within a holistic developmental approach, aim to render comprehensive student services to service users in relation to their psychological, social,educational and spiritual well-being. However, a number of cognitive and affective barriers reportedly reduce the likelihood of young people at universities seeking professional psychological help for personal-emotional problems. Accordingly, the aim of this study, which is located within the Theory of Reasoned Action, was to explore students’ attitudes towards utilising student counselling services, as well as their interpretations of the influence of age, gender and education on their attitudes and self-rated knowledge regarding seeking psychological help. The study thereby attempts to provide an understanding of the factors that influence help-seeking behaviours in university students. The research sample consisted of twenty nine students from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. The data was collected through focus group discussions, which were conducted using an open-ended and participantcentred approach to the discussion. The qualitative approach of the study was informed by the theory of social phenomenology. Data gathered from the focus group discussions was thematically analysed. The results suggest that attitudes have a potentially important influence on intentions to seek out psychological counselling. Findings show that students feel shame and guilt when they are struggling psychologically and as a result avoid seeking psychological intervention for fear of being negatively stigmatised. The study revealed that education around mental health disorders and the management thereof was crucial in order for them to be demystified and de-stigmatised, and to facilitate openness in the sharing of these problems, and society’s understanding and acceptance of people experiencing psychological disorders. Results also indicate that there is a shift taking place in these attitudes, and suggest ways in which this change can be further facilitated, such as the utilisation of peer helpers who could play a key role in facilitating and reinforcing help seeking behaviour. The outcomes of the study may further contribute to informing universities’ goal to provide accessible, quality and effective development and support services to its students.

Abstract:

The purpose of this study is to explore the attitudes and behaviors of male university students in relation to preconception health. Preconception health is a set of interventions that detect and change biomedical, behavioral, and social risks to a man and woman's health and future pregnancies. One essential component in preconception health is to improve the knowledge, attitudes and behaviors of men and women related to proper health management before conception.

This study follows a univariate descriptive research design using a convenience sampling of 64 university students. This study demonstrated 5 key findings: (a) attitudes towards preconception health is necessary when planning a pregnancy, using birth control is fairly easy and safe; (b) partners and friends have an influence on confidence in using preconception counseling, however, only the partner had an influence on attitude towards pregnancy prevention; (c) a participant's belief in using birth control every time he has sex is higher when his partner takes birth control more seriously; (d) there were no significant difference between attitudes and behaviors among racial groups; and (e) the older the participants, the more negative attitudes they had towards preconception health.

Abstract:
This research explored the attitudes of McGill University undergraduate students toward people with physical disabilities. First and third year students in six different faculties were further subdivided into a Human Service discipline which included Education, Social Work, and Nursing students, and a non Human Service discipline which included Management, Engineering, and Agriculture students. The effects of gender, having had previous contact with persons with a disability, and having had a course on the topic of disability on attitudes toward people with disabilities were also examined. One hundred and forty-four women and 79 men served as the subjects for this study. Subjects completed the Attitude Toward Disabled Persons Scale (ATDP) Form B, and descriptive information giving the variables under investigation (gender, faculty, etc.). The analysis of the data collected showed that there was a significant positive difference in attitudes among students following a Human Service discipline than students following a non Human Service discipline. There was a significant interaction effect between faculty and year of study with Agriculture, Engineering, and Nursing student scores increasing in their third year, and Management, Education, and Social Work student scores decreasing in their third year. No significant differences on attitudes toward people who are physically disabled were found according to faculty enrolled in, year of study, gender, previous contact with persons with disabilities, or previous course on the topic of disability.

Abstract:
English is currently used as a global lingua franca (ELF), involving people from diverse socio-linguacultural backgrounds (e.g., Jenkins, Cogo and Dewey 2011). However, as a former English teacher, I have observed that many Japanese students see no tangible connection between themselves and ELF. Indeed, they appeared overtly pejorative about their English. To investigate this issue, my research explores two questions: 1) How do Japanese university students orient to Japanese people’s English including their own? and 2) What factors are associated with the students’ orientations, and how do these factors work to form their orientations? People’s orientations to language are theorised as language attitudes; that is, the evaluative concepts directed to a linguistic phenomenon (e.g., Niedzielski and Preston 1999/2003; Preston 2010). To answer the research questions, 95 open-ended email questionnaires from Japanese university students were collected, and analysed through qualitative content analysis (e.g., Miles, Huberman and Saldaña 2014; Schreier 2012, 2014). Also, face-to-face conversational interview data with eighteen Japanese undergraduates was elicited and analysed through the combination of qualitative content analysis and Eggins and Slade’s (1997/2004) speech functions analysis framework. Two sets of negative attitudes became apparent in my participants. The first was the perceived prioritisation of, or a perceived obsession with, ‘correctness’ in ‘standard’ North American and possibly other English as a Native Language (ENL) at the expense of effective communication. The second was a deficit perspective on Japanese-influenced English use, generally without due regard to intelligibility. In addition, it was identified that the coupling of concentration on ENL norms and adherence to North American ENL may be the only way to experience English in Japanese society. Furthermore, based on the interview data, raising ELF awareness has a high potential to alleviate such negative attitudes as expressed by my participants. Implications, mainly in Japanese English education, are offered towards the end.

Abstract The purpose of this study is to describe and to compare the university students’ attitudes (knowledge, feelings and behaviour) towards HIV/AIDS (Human Immune Deficiency Virus/ Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) in Finland and in Kenya and to find explanatory factors associated with the sexual risk behaviour. For educators, managers and experts in health care and education the results will provide an opportunity to deepen their knowledge and awareness of students’ sexual behaviour. These results may also be used for planning an educational programme for youngsters and young adults in order to promote healthy sexual behaviour. This study is focused on the viewpoint of preventive health care and sexual health promotion. The study is a comparative research with quantitative and qualitative methods. The study group consists of 525 first year students (411 Finnish and 114 Kenyan students) of Oulu University of Applied Sciences, Oulu University and the University of Helsinki in Finland and of MOI University in Kenya. The response rate was 87.5%. The results concerning the attitudes towards HIV/AIDS of the students showed that the Finnish and Kenyan students had a good level of knowledge concerning HIV and AIDS. Most of the information had been obtained from TV, campaigns, newspapers, and information packages. The role of the health care professionals was very small in both countries. The most negative attitudes were found towards homosexuality (25.8% of the respondents) and intravenous drugs users (59.5%). The result showed that the level of knowledge did not have an effect on the level of their beliefs and prejudices of the students. It was common for the respondents to be single during their first study year. No influence was found between the students’ knowledge and the number of their sex partners or the frequency of the sexual activity. Almost the same number of students who reported using prevention always or almost always identified both HIV correctly (43.4%) and incorrectly (45.7%). The situation concerning AIDS was similar. The age and the importance of religion of the students had influence on the use of prevention
Tiivistelmä Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on kuvata ja verrata kenialaisten ja suomalaisten korkeakouluopiskelijoiden asenteita (tietoja, tunteita ja käyttäytymistä) HIV/AIDSia (Immuunikatovirus/ Hankittu immuunipuutos-oireyhtymä) kohtaan ja löytää seksuaalista riskikäyttäytymistä selittäviä tekijöitä. Terveydenhuollon ja terveysalan hallinnon ja koulutuksen asiantuntijoille tutkimustulokset antavat mahdollisuuden tutustua ja syventää HIV/AIDSia koskevaa tietouttaan ja tietoisuuttaan. Tuloksia voidaan hyödyntää ennaltaehkäisevän terveydenhuollon suunnittelussa ja koulutuksessa edistämään nuorten ja nuorten aikuisten terveellistä seksikäyttäytymistä. Tutkimuksen lähtökohta on ennaltaehkäisevä toiminta ja erityisesti seksuaaliterveyden edistäminen. Tutkimus on vertaileva tutkimus. Aineisto kerättiin strukturoituja ja avoimia kysymyksiä sisältävällä kyselylomakkeella. Tutkimukseen vastasi yhteensä 525 ensimmäisen lukuvuoden korkeakouluopiskelijaa, 411 suomalaista ja 114 kenialaista opiskelijaa. Vastausprosentti oli 87,5 %. Tulokset osoittivat sekä kenialaisilla että suomalaisilla korkeakouluopiskelijoilla olevan hyvät tiedot HIV/AIDSista. Tärkeimpiä opiskelijoiden nimeämiä tietolähteitä olivat TV, kampanjat, sanomalehdet ja informaatiopaketit. Perheen ja terveydenhuoltohenkilöstön rooli tiedon lähteenä oli vähäinen molemmissa maissa. Negatiivisimmat asenteet kohdistuivat homoseksuaalisuutta ja laskimon sisäisiä huumeiden käyttäjiä kohtaan. Kenialaisten opiskelijoiden ennakkoasenteet HIV/AIDSia kohtaan olivat muita opiskelijoita voimakkaammat ja negatiivisemmat. Tulokset osoittivat, että tiedon laadulla ei ollut merkitystä opiskelijoiden ennakkoasenteisiin. Tulokset osoittivat myös, että ensimmäisen vuoden korkeakouluopiskelijoilla ei ole paljon seksisuhteita. Opiskelijoiden HIV/AIDS-tiedoilla ei ollut yhteyttä seksipartnereiden määrään tai seksuaaliseen aktiivisuuteen. Oikealla tai väärällä HIV/AIDS-tiedolla ei ollut vaikutusta ehkäisyn käyttöön. Lähes sama määrä opiskelijoita, jotka kertoivat käyttävänsä ehkäisyä aina tai lähes aina, määritteli HIVin oikein ja väärin. Tilanne oli samanlainen koskien AIDSia. Oikealla tai väärällä HIV/AIDSia koskevalla tiedolla ei ollut myöskään vaikutusta ennakkoasenteiden voimakkuuteen. Tutkimustulosten perusteella HIV/AIDSin ennaltaehkäisyssä ei pelkkä HIV/AIDS tietotason kohottaminen riitä, vaan on syytä käyttää uusia ja monipuolisia lähestymistapoja

Abstract:
The thesis explores religious attitudes and Muslim identity in Turkey from a social psychological perspective with reference to university students. Religious attitudes are explored in relation to three components: cognitive, behavioural and affective religious attitudes, whereas Muslim identity is examined through macro and micro levels, and observations. In order to investigate these issues, qualitative and quantitative methods are employed. Research hypotheses are developed on the basis of a review of secondary materials related to Islam in the Turkish context, Muslim identity and the measurement of religious attitudes. Primary data for this study are gathered through standardised questionnaires, such as the Religious Attitude Scale, in-depth interviews and observations. The techniques of psychometrics are employed for the fieldwork of this study, carried out among 1149 students in two universities in Turkey. Using sophisticated statistical analyses, test variables are operationalised and research hypotheses are tested. In doing this, a number of demographic and contextual variations, namely gender, age, family incomes, social and educational backgrounds, supplementary religious education and orientations towards both the Diyanet and cemaats, are taken into account as independent variables. Conclusions are drawn on the basis of the results of statistical analyses, as well as using qualitative inferences from in-depth interviews. The thesis also investigates the predictors of religious attitudes. Using a stepwise multiple regression analysis, between about 55% and 75% of variance in religious attitudes of Turkish university students are explained. The greatest amount of variance in religious attitudes is explained by orientation towards the Diyanet, the formal religious institution in Turkey.

This research investigates university students' receptivity to peers with disabilities at two universities in Perth, Western Australia (Edith Cowan University and the University of Notre Dame in Fremantle), and two universities in India (The University of Kolkata (previously Calcutta) and the University of Jadavpur). Data were collected by three methods: (1) a 60 item questionnaire (N=996) based on six aspects supporting receptivity to peers with disabilities-Academic, Interactive, Social, Personal, Professional and Supportive; (2) written open-ended data (N= 201); and (3) four focus groups, two in Perth (N=1O) and two in Kolkata (N=10). The final questionnaire was composed of 30 stem-items each answered in two perspectives: (1) an ideal self-view (What I think I should do) and (2) their self-reported behaviour (what I actually do), making a total of 60 items.

association with height and weight, family meal patterns, perceived social support, family values and socio-demographic variables were assessed. 299 first year university students from the Department of Basic English at Middle East Technical University participated in the study. Five assessment devices- Demographic data form, the Eating Attitude Test (EAT&ndash
40), Family Eating Attitude and Behavior Subscales, the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, and the Traditional Family Values Questionnaire were administered. ANOVAs were conducted to assess differences on eating attitudes between participants in terms of gender, with whom they lived, perceived family type, socio economic status, body mass index and weight satisfaction. Stepwise multiple regressions were conducted to appraise to what extent perceived social support, family meal patterns, traditional family values and demographic variables predicted eating attitudes of first year students. The participants who perceived their family as traditional reported more pathological eating attitudes in dieting, preoccupation with food, social pressure on weight factor. Regression analyses for female participants revealed that dieting, parents occupation, body mass index (current / desired) perceived social support- family, relationships with family and kin, and perceived family income were associated with pathological eating attitudes. Regression analyses for males revealed that dieting, father occupation, desired body mass index and relationships with family and kin were associated with pathological eating attitudes. These findings were discussed with reference to relevant literature. Future research topics were suggested and therapeutic implications of the study were discussed.

While South Africa stands apart from other countries as being more progressive in terms of gay and lesbian rights, attitudes towards this population continue to be intolerant. Attitudes shape people’s behaviour and in a university setting young students are vulnerable to discrimination. This is often a time when young people are still shaping their identities. An electronic survey comprising the Attitudes towards Lesbians and Gay Men Scale was administered to 401 students taking undergraduate psychology courses at the East London Campus of the University of Fort Hare, to assess their attitudes towards gays and lesbians. The survey measured their attitudes in terms of the biographical variables of gender, age, race, and religiosity, commitment to religious practice, urban or rural upbringing and nationality. The results of the research found that gender, race, religiosity, religious attendance and rural or urban upbringing do influence students’ attitudes significantly. However, age did not have an effect on attitudes towards gays and lesbians in the present study. The significance of the differences in attitudes in terms of nationality was not able to be tested due to the small sample size of foreign students. The findings of this study show that there are fairly consistent predictors of students’ attitudes concerning gays and lesbians. This information can help us to clarify areas to target for improvement in the campus climate for gay and lesbian communities.

Sexually transmitted diseases are a major problem among adolescents in Thailand, and seeing that unprotected sex is a growing trend, awareness must be increased. The aim of this study was to examine Thai students’ knowledge of and attitudes to STDs as well as if there are any differences in gender regarding these questions. A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out at a private university in Bangkok, Thailand. The Health Belief Model was provided as theoretical framework. A questionnaire was answered voluntarily by 150 students, both male and female. The results showed that the students had low level of knowledge on STDs and their attitudes showed that they have many misconceptions regarding these issues. The study also showed that Thai students want to learn more about STDs and wish to receive this information from school. No major difference in gender was found. This study shows that additional education on STDs is needed among Thai adolescents. Further research in this area is acquired to get a wider perspective of Thai students’ knowledge on STDs, to help prevent future spreading of STDs.
Sexuellt överförbara sjukdomar är ett stort problem hos ungdomar i Thailand och eftersom oskyddat sex är en växande trend bör detta uppmärksammas. Syftet med denna studie var att undersöka thailändska studenters kunskap om och attityder till sexuellt överförbara sjukdomar. Studien önskade även undersöka huruvida det fanns någon skillnad mellan könen. En deskriptiv tvärsnittsstudie gjordes på ett privat universitet i Bangkok, Thailand. Health Belief Model användes som teoretiskt ramverk. Ett frågeformulär besvarades frivilligt av 150 manliga och kvinnliga studenter. Resultatet visade att studenterna hade bristande kunskaper om sexuellt överförbara sjukdomar. Deras attityder visade att studenterna hade många felaktiga uppfattningar i frågan. Studien visade även att de thailändska studenterna vill lära sig mer om sexuellt överförbara sjukdomar och önskar att få denna information ifrån skolan.  Studien visade inga stora skillnader mellan könen. Denna studie visar att ytterligare kunskaper om sexuellt överförbara sjukdomar hos thailändska ungdomar behövs. Ytterligare forskning inom området är önskvärt. Detta för att få ett bredare perspektiv om thailändska studenters kunskaper om sexuellt överförbara sjukdomar, för att bidra till att förebygga ytterligare smittspridning.

The purpose of the study was to provide a descriptive data analysis for program planners on knowledge, attitudes, and behavior regarding organ donation among undergraduate students enrolled at Ball State University. An 84-item questionnaire was administered to undergraduate students. The subjects were obtained from a convenient sample.The data were analyzed using mean and Pearson's r to answer the research questions. The overall attitudes of the subjects were positive (M=20.88 out of a possible 26). The knowledge of the subjects toward organ donation was low (M=9.98 out of a possible 22). About one half of the subjects indicated that they are organ donors, by indicating on the survey that they have signed an organ donor card or a similar document. Attitude regarding organ donation (r =.232) was found to be a greater influence on willingness to become an organ donor than was knowledge about organ donation (r = .106). Recommendations are to submit results to program planners to help create more effective organ donation recruitment.

The purpose of this study was: (1) to investigate Kuwait University (KU) students' attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help; and (2) to investigate if family, friends, and societal support played a role in the student's decision to seek professional psychological help as measured by the Family, Friends, and Societal Support Scale (FFSS), which was developed by the author. Other assessment tools used in the study included: (1) Attitudes Toward Seeking Professional Psychological Help Scale (ATSPPHS) as developed by Fischer and Turner (1970); (2) Orientation Toward Utilization of Social Resources (OTUSR) as developed by Vaux, Burda, and Stewart (1986); (3) a modified Life Stress Events Scale (LSE) based on 18 items selected from the 43 items Social Readjustment Scale published by Holmes and Rahe (1967); and (4) Demographic Data Sheet (DDS). A total of 529 participants completed all five assessment tools. The results indicated that KU students have less favorable attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help than groups studied by other researchers. The results also supported previous research, which found females, in general, to have more favorable attitudes toward seeking professional help than males. Individuals who received previous counseling were more likely to have favorable attitudes toward seeking professional help than those who did not receive such help. Students who majored or minored in psychology had more favorable attitudes toward counseling than those who were not psychology majors or minors. The newly developed scale, FFSS, was an effective predictor of KU students' attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help and explained more variance in ATSPPHS scores than any other predictors used in the study.

This dissertation examines a university faculty (n = 41) and diverse students (n = 93) including students with disability (n = 44), students without disability (n = 21), and international students (n = 28) regarding their attitudes toward and actions associated with inclusive instruction based on the universal design for learning (UDL) principles and practices. Two online surveys, the Inclusive Teaching Strategies Inventory (ITSI) and the Inclusive Teaching Strategies Inventory-Student (ITSI-S), were administered at a large, public Southwest university (N = 134). The ITSI and ITSI-S contain seven subscales representing the following constructs: (a) accommodations, (b) accessible course materials, (c) course modifications, (d) inclusive lecture strategies, (e) inclusive classroom, (f) inclusive assessment, and (g) disability laws and concepts. A series of multivariate analyses of variances (MANOVAs) measured the overall of attitude subscales and overall action subscales, and an independent-samples test (t-test) compared mean scores on the seven Attitude subscales and seven Action subscales to identify predictors of these attitudes and actions among faculty and students. The main findings were (a) significant differences among diverse students, where students with disability responded negatively on the Action subscales and (b) significant differences between faculty and diverse students where international students had a positive attitude on the Attitude subscales, whereas students with disability had a negative attitude on the Action subscales toward the actual practices of their faculty. Results of the current study respond to the gap in the literature by examining the inclusive instruction environment based on UDL in a university environment. The implications of these findings and recommendations for future research are discussed.

The purpose of this study was to investigate and analyze computer literacy and general attitudes toward computers of students at Thai public unversities. The comparative study of computer literacy levels and attitudes toward computers among Thai students with various demographic classification was performed followed by the study of relationships between the two variables among the samples. A fifty-eight-item questionnaire was adapted from the computer literacy questionnaire developed by the researchers at the Minnesota Educational Computing Consortium. The items were designed to assess knowledge and attitudes relative to computers. The questionnaire was administered to a random sample of 492 students who took at least one computer course from thirteen public universities in Thailand. Statistical tests used to analyze the data included t-test, one-way analysis of variance, and Pearson product moment correlations. Based on the research findings, the following conclusions were drawn: (1) Thai university students exhibited a moderate computer literacy level. (2) While a higher proportion of female students enrolled in computer classes, male and female students reported similar computer literacy levels. (3) Graduate students had higher computer literacy levels than did other students from different educational levels. (4) Academic majors and academic performance (GPAs) were also factors affecting computer literacy levels. Education majors displayed higher computer literacy levels than mathematics majors and science majors. (5) Students with higher GPAs had higher levels of computer literacy than the groups with lower GPAs. (6) Computer literacy was not age dependent. (7) Generally, Thai university students showed positive attitudes toward computers. (8) Males and females both showed positive attitudes toward computers. (9) Graduate students exhibited more positive attitudes toward computers than all other groups. (10) The groups of students with lower GPAs displayed lower positive attitudes toward computers. (11) There was a strong positive relationship between students' knowledge and their attitudes toward computers. It is recommended that computer education should be viewed in relation to its contribution to educational process as a whole. It should be relevant to the local environment, work, individuals and. society needs sis well as development of positive attitude toward manual skills. More research is needed in the areas of teacher education, evaluation techniques to assess students' progress in a new teaching context, and ethical values relative to computers.

The use of English has increased greatly in the higher education system with universities across the world including English as part of their education programs. One of many consequences of this is that many students have to read and study in a second or foreign language, which has shown to be of difficulty for many students according to previous research. The purpose of this present study is to investigate the academic reading habits of students and explore their perceptions and attitudes towards reading academic English, and what experiences they have in relation to that. A total of 68 participants took part in this study, all recruited at Stockholm University. All participants responded to a questionnaire and interviews were conducted with four of the students. A relatively high degree of commitment was reported towards the assigned reading and a majority of the students did not perceive reading academic English as difficult and reported mostly positive attitudes about it. The results suggest that the personal interest and perception of the assigned reading is crucial and matter more for students than the target language.

In response to the dearth of research on culture awareness instruction prior to foreign language instruction, the objective of this study was to explore the effects of culture awareness lessons on learner attitudes and beliefs in second-semester university students of French. As a treatment, the experimental group received lessons on culture awareness prior to traditional French classroom instruction; the control group did not. Culture awareness lessons addressed terms such as perspective, culture, interpretation, and stereotypes. Lessons also included worksheets consisting of open-ended questions designed to capture students' responses to the aforementioned topics of discussion. Data collection methods consisted of pre- and post-surveys that included Likert-scale questions and reflections that incorporated open-ended questions designed to capture student attitudes and beliefs. Reflections included general questions on attitudes toward the French as well as cultural practice-specific questions. Qualitative analysis revealed that students from the experimental group showed greater appreciation for culture as an important component of foreign language instruction as well as higher response rates vis-à -vis intercultural understanding. Statistical analysis of the Likert-scale questions also showed significance among questions addressing greater understanding of cultural differences and increased perceived similarity between American and French cultures among the experimental group. However, the experimental group also showed a decrease in student predilection for studying and talking about culture. In general, the study reveals that the explicit teaching of culture awareness prior to traditional foreign language instruction, in conjunction with the opportunity students had to reflect and express their thoughts, has a positive effect on student attitudes.

The main aim of this study was to investigate the attitudes of the University of Zululand students towards campus psychological services made available to them. The sample for the study was made up of a total of ten (10) participants; consisted of four (4) male and six (6) female participants. The results showed that female students of the University of Zululand were more likely, than their male counterparts, to seek professional help from the campus psychological services. It was also found that most students in their first and second years at the University of Zululand were less likely, than their final year and postgraduate counterparts, to proactively seek out psychological services. It was equally observed that although all participants admitted to have had psychological and emotional problems but not all of them sought psychological help. It was further observed that the students’ lack of awareness about the availability of campus psychological services was congruent with their perception that there was no need for psychological services at the University of Zululand. Although some students may be aware of the availability of the psychological services and some have utilized them, they do not often chat about the psychological services. This may be attributed to the fact that they share common beliefs and values; that it is better to communicate with those within their social circles instead of talking to a psychologist. The findings suggested that those who utilized and thus advised others about psychological services, started by communicating with their friends before seeking psychological services. It also became evident that seeking professional help may not be a common primary step among the University of Zululand students.

This research explores the significance of context in university students’ experiences of intercultural interactions on- and off-campus, and attitudes towards culturally mixed learning activities. An original aspect is the adoption of a multi-layered and multiple context approach grounded in a “person-in-context” perspective (Volet, 2001; Pintrich, 2000). Inspired by central tenets from ecological psychology and activity theory, the research furthermore acknowledges the interdependence between individuals and their environment (e.g., Gibson, 1979/1986; Greeno, 1998). It construes individuals as located within multiple activity systems (Engeström, 2001) between which they move and participate, and which co-shape their intercultural interactions and attitudes. The empirical component of the research emerged from the overwhelming evidence of minimal interactions and poor attitudes towards mixing between culturally diverse peers at universities in English-speaking countries. A review of the extant literature, however, revealed major limitations in the research designs and methodologies. Investigations of students’ intercultural experiences and perceptions of culturally mixed group learning activities typically used only one sample from a single context, a single point of data collection, and self-report data, either a questionnaire or interview. On the assumption that students participate simultaneously in multiple social contexts, it was argued that such methodologies have limited potential to reveal the complex, interdependent, and contextsensitive nature of intercultural experiences and attitudes. A particular aim of the present research was to address the lack of systematic investigations of the social context to explain paucity of intercultural interactions and poor attitudes to mixing on multicultural campuses. This implied conceptualising intercultural experiences and interactions as multi-dimensional and contextualised, adopting multi-layered and multiple context research designs, and carrying out empirical studies that combined quantitative methodologies for the identification of meaningful patterns, and qualitative methodologies for gaining experiential insight into these complex, social phenomena. The findings revealed significant and powerful contextual affordances and constraints at multiple levels of the immediate (learning) environment for students’ experiences of culturally diverse group work and interactions. Contingent to a combination of contextual elements, students’ intercultural experiences were perceived and emerged differently within and across distinct social contexts. More specifically, cohort characteristics, language competency and level of academic standard were identified as salient facilitating or inhibiting factors for positive peer interactions and group management. One unexpected finding was that the culturally similar and close peer group seemed to represent an important social context that played a vital role in students’ openness and willingness to engage in interactions with peers from different backgrounds. The emotional risk of peer group disapproval when stepping out of the in-group to interact with ‘others’ was linked to fear of jeopardizing existing group memberships. These issues have been overlooked in prior research on intercultural interactions and have potential for contributing to a better understanding of the multi-faceted and interdependent nature of intercultural activities. The research concludes by stressing the crucial role of the social context in co-shaping students’ intercultural experiences, and development of cognitions and attitudes. It is argued that the identification of patterns in students’ attitudes and experiences of interactions with peers from different cultural-educational backgrounds has to be interpreted in relation to the immediate, social environment, and the specific contextual affordances and constraints within which interactions occur. In that regard, stable and narrow conceptualisations of the construct of intercultural interactions appear incompatible with the complex, interdependent and situation-specific nature of students’ intercultural activities on multicultural campuses.

Arab Canadians are a heterogeneous and frequently misunderstood group whose educational background and cultural heritage have received little attention in the scholarly literature. In multicultural Canada, educators, curriculum developers, textbook authors and policy makers rely on available literature to inform their decision-making processes. Mainstream media, as a source of information and insight, do not fill this need.
In this inquiry, I examine the cross cultural and educational experiences of ten Arab undergraduate students in two English-language universities in Montreal. Participants were from Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, and Morocco and have been in Canada for three to seven years.
Classic qualitative methodological tools of in-depth interviews, participant observation and document analysis were employed to record, analyze and interpret the experiences of these students. In order to give voice to these students' insights and experiences, a narrative approach is used in presenting and interpreting the data.
Seven themes identified as educational issues emerged from the analysis: Student-Teacher Relationship; Teaching Methodology; Democratic dialogue in the classroom; Teaching and learning foreign languages; Examinations; Research and Library Facilities; and Problems encountered in interactive classroom. Two themes, identified as cultural issues, emerged: Canadians' Perceptions of Arabs and Muslims from the perspectives of the participants; Islamic dress (hijab) and Sex-segregated relationships.
The analysis revealed differences in culture, language, and social and educational systems between these students' countries of origin and Canada as the major sources of these students' positive and negative experiences. The study concludes that Canadian educators can assist these students by becoming aware of their home culture, different learning styles, frustrations in adjusting to school life and in overcoming cultural shock; and by helping them adjust to Canadian educational system and learn about the Canadian culture.

The overall objective of this exploratory study was to explore the attitudes that gender plays toward homosexuality among School of Social Work graduate students. A self-administered questionnaire was given to employ results. A total of forty students participated in this study, 14 of which were male and 26 were females. All participants were enrolled in the Clark Atlanta University School of Social Work. Simple descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data. The findings of the study utilized the t-test analysis. The t-test analysis did not note a significant relationship between the two groups. Therefore, the null hypothesis was accepted.

Abstract:

This quasi-experimental, exploratory study adds important empirical research to the relatively new field of individual-oriented relationship education. It describes the extent to which specific relationship beliefs and attitudes are held, and evaluates the impact of an undergraduate, semester-long Intimate and Family Relationships course on these beliefs. Utilizing data collected over two semesters at the University of Montana, this study compared 356 student responses at the beginning and end of the semester on three separate scales designed to quantify select measures of specific constraint beliefs and attitudes: Attitudes About Romance and Mate Selection (AARMS), the Parental Authority Questionnaire (PAQ), and the Illinois Rape Myth Acceptance Scale-Short Form (IRMA-SF). Additionally, this study examined the mediating effects of several student background factors: parental divorce, gender, and parenting style on student responses to the educational experience. The researcher found significant results in the following areas: (a) gender differences with regards to the Love is Enough Cohabitation constraint beliefs, and rape myth acceptance; (b) differences on the Love is Enough constraint belief and rape myth acceptance between Adult Children of Divorce and non-Adult Children of Divorce; (c) differences between students who are in a relationship and those who are not, with regards to the One and Only constraint belief, and rape myth acceptance. The results are discussed in the context of exploring and understanding possible variables that may or may not impact relationship health, and may or may not be amendable to individually oriented relationship education. Limitations of the study, implications of the findings, and recommendations for future research are discussed.

This thesis reports the findings of a study of the influence of the classroom learning environment on students cognitive and affective outcomes among 2,498 third-year computing students in 50 university-level classes in Indonesia. Students perceptions of the classroom environment were measured using a modified Indonesian version of the What Is Happening In This Class? (WIHIC) questionnaire. To assess students affective outcomes, a scale derived from the Test of Science Related Attitudes was adapted for use in higher education computing classes and translated into Indonesian. Students' final scores in their mathematics course (either linear algebra or statistics) were used as a measure of cognitive achievement. Secondary aims of the present study were to examine whether differences exist between (a) students perceptions of the actual and preferred classroom learning environment, (b) the perceptions of male and female of the actual and preferred classroom environment and (c) students' perceptions of the actual learning environment in linear algebra and statistics courses. The results of this study make important contributions towards explaining why Indonesian students are achieving at less than desirable levels in their computing courses.

Abstract:
This study examines the reasons given for the lack of interracial contact among 188 (142 Black, 25 White and 19 Coloured) university students. The most pervasive factor influencing such contact for the whole group (79.1 percent) was language differences. The statements endorsed by most black participants were; differences in behaviour (62.9 percent), socio-economic status (56.0 percent) and culture (52.5 percent). The coloured participants endorsed statements concerning socio-economic status (61.1 percent), culture (42.1 percent) and dissociation (42.1 percent). The white participants endorsed statements regarding race issues (64.0 percent), differences in behaviour (60.0 percent) and cultural differences (44.0 percent). This study found that metastereotypes social distance and contact correlate with prejudice. Metastereotypes and social distance positively influence prejudice in that an increase in these factors is associated with heightened levels of prejudice. The amount of contact between groups has a negative relationship with prejudice, indicating that increased levels of contact are associated with a decrease in prejudice.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of customer service in higher education. Student perceptions of customer service were collected and examined through a survey instrument developed for this study. Two-hundred and seven participants completed the survey resulting in a 23% return rate.Freshmen students at Ball State perceive themselves to be customers entitled to a high quality service through both service areas and academic departments of a university. Results from the survey showed that a majority of the students believe they are the most important group of people at a university. In addition, over 90% believe a university's purpose is to serve students. Students reported they have experienced courteous and personalized service in both academic departments and service areas of a university. They also stated that customer service wasequally important in both academic and service areas of a university.When describing positive and negative interactions between faculty and staff, students' responses varied greatly. About half of the respondents reported experiencing positive interactions with both faculty and staff, while the other half, experienced negative interactions with both faculty and staff. When discussing negative interactions with both faculty and staff, some of the common themes included: rudeness, being treated like a child, individuals not knowing their names, and not having time to help them. On the contrary, the common themes with positive interactions included: politeness, being treated with respect, knowing names of the students and helpfulness.
