Abstract:
Rivalries are a powerful promotional tool that can help drive identification with a brand, attendance at sports events, and subsequent consumer spending. While rivalries often benefit the participating athletic departments directly, there are other peripheral benefits that institutions can take advantage of. For instance, campus recreation departments can use the rivalry to help boost participation and provide additional psychic income benefits. This case focuses on two NCAA Football Championship Subdivision rivals and the ways in which the branding of their annual football contest, the Battle of the Piney Woods, can be best leveraged by other programs in the university, namely campus recreation. A sample scenario of a relatively new recreational sports employee is provided along with promotional elements and background for the universities and the Battle of the Piney Woods event. The reader is challenged to devise strategies that can best tie the Battle of the Piney Woods rivalry to the promotion of recreational sports offerings. The goal of such an exercise is to have one examine how large inter-institutional rivalries can also benefit other sport organizations that are within the university but are not necessarily just in the athletic department.

Abstract:
The cultural and literary heritage of a nation can be found in their writings. Moreover, the development of art, science and literature can be assessed historically through the use of these writing available in manuscript form. They throw enough light on the times in which they were written. It is a record of the knowledge, aesthetic literary and creative skill of the period in which they were written. Manuscripts are therefore essentially thought to be the most important element in tracing on the human heritage.Since earlier knowledge along with religion came to this part of the world through Central Asia, therefore most rather all such records are available in the prevailing languages of the time like Arabic, Persian, Turkish or Pashto. The University Campus5 at Peshawar is a conglomeration center of knowledge. Emerging with Islamia College in the early part of the last century, it had by now grown into four universities with couple of dozen institutions. The manuscript repositories amongst them are mainly Islamia College (now university) and the University of Peshawar. They contain, to my assessment, some of the rarest collections on socio-scientific knowledge besides religion and ethics. The total number of manuscripts in the Islamia College Library is twelve hundred and seventy7. This rare collection has been donated by Ghulam Jillani and his family soon after the establishment of the college library8. Center Library University of Peshawar also contains some of the rare manuscripts on different subjects9. Maximum number of manuscripts among these has been donated by Ghulam Samdani. The total number of this collection is seven hundred and twelve. Pashto Academy library is another place of manuscripts collection on the campus having more than nine hundred manuscript collection mostly donated by Ghulam Samdani.

Abstract:
The last few years a struggle of feeling safe has become more of an issue with all the tragedies that have taken place on college campuses throughout the years. Tragedies like Columbine then Virginia Tech and most recently the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting in Connecticut. This research focuses on student's perception of safety and the issues with violence on campus. The question is how the students, faculty, and staff will react if an incident like this occurs on the University of Central Florida campus. The intent of this thesis was to explore the student body of UCF students and their perception of safety on campus. Students were questioned on previous victimization and campus related crime. Findings suggest that women overall are more fearful on campus compared to men. Sadly, only about 5.6 percent of my sample knew about the Clery Act. This act states all public schools must post all crimes committed on or near campus on a public website. This was questioned with a simple yes or no answer. By conducting this study I hope to find a better understanding on how UCF student's view safety on campus.

Molefe, Moyahabo Walter. "Supervisory communication and its effect on employee satisfaction at the Central University of Technology, Welkom campus." Thesis, Bloemfontein : Central University of Technology, Free State, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/11462/179.

Abstract:
Thesis (M. Tech. (Language Practice)) -- Central University of Technology, free State, 2013
Many large organisations tend to focus on their external communication in order to project a positive image to potential clients. However the role of internal communication with employees has often been overlooked, although it remains one of the most important areas of organisational communication. Employees‟ views about their own organisation impact on how external clients view that particular organisation. In order for employees to become advocates of their own organisation, supervisors of different operational units should develop and manage their internal communication activities in a way that motivates and stimulates employees‟ enthusiasm for meeting the organisational goals. Once employees are satisfied with the state of supervisory communication in their respective units, they should be able to identify with their organisation and endeavour to attain its organisation‟s goals. The researcher investigated supervisory communication and its effect on employee satisfaction at the Central University of Technology, Free State, Welkom Campus (CUT, W). The study was conducted through a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods. A questionnaire was distributed among the forty employees, whereas interviews were conducted with the five remaining employees at the CUT, W. The researcher used purposive sampling to select the respondents and participants of the study. The reliability of the questionnaire was determined by calculating the Cronbach Alpha coefficient (CAc) of the constructs. All the Communication Satisfaction Questionnaire constructs indicated CAc of .0974 which is consistent with a high level of internal stability. The study (quantitative research method) indicated that the majority of the respondents showed overall satisfaction on all CSQ constructs, except Personal Feedback. However, the study has revealed that the Schools of Government Management and Human Resources as well as the School of Accounting have revealed communication deficiencies on constructs such as Supervisory Communication, Divisional Information, Communication Climate, Co-Worker Communication and Personal Feedback. The qualitative findings have revealed communication deficiencies in four categorical themes, namely, lack of: * Communication and commitment to institutional values and policies by Supervisors. * Consultation and openness to ideas. * Performance standards and career-pathing. * Co-worker communication. * Downward flow of information. The researcher recommends that the Schools1 of Government Management, Human Resources and Accounting put more effort into improving their Schools‟ communication climate and giving personal feedback to their subordinates. The CUT, W should develop a Performance Management Plan to appraise their staff. The researcher further recommends that meetings should be held regularly to provide the necessary platform for the employees to raise concerns related to their specific jobs. The researcher also believes that Supervisors should consult with employees in their specific units before making any important decisions.

Abstract:
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2008.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study takes as starting point the observation in sensemaking theory that autonomic arousal is accompanied by a loss of existing frames and cues and the consequential cognitive implosion. Situations such as these are marked by a crisis in identity construction and the resultant loss of sense being made. The aim of the study was to find out to what extent this phenomenon is at play during a merger between two organizations. Specifically to what extent this phenomenon did manifest itself among the employees of the Central University of Technology in Welkom after the merger of the former Welkom Campus of Vista University and the Technikon Free State. The study starts with an overview of the literature on corporate mergers; focusing on research on effects with regards to (i) how the different gender groups of employees were affected by these interruptions, (ii) how employees with diverse levels of experience were affected, (iii) to what extent the qualifications of employees was a factor regarding the impact of this autonomic arousal and (iv) whether race was a factor in determining the extent of autonomic arousal. The above is followed by an explanation of the sensemaking perspective and the nature of and moment for autonomic arousal. It is argued that organizational mergers represent an interruption in the ongoing flow of sensemaking that could lead to autonomic arousal. Using sensemaking theory and autonomic arousal as a theoretical starting point, interviews were conducted with key figures in the specific merger between the Vista University Welkom Campus and the Technikon Free State. The respondents were selected using the snowballing sampling technique. The idea behind the interviews was to demonstrate how staff members were emotionally affected by the interruption of the merger and how it had an impact on their perceptions about their work. It was found that the flow of experience was interrupted and as cues and frames were reduced, the employees focussed more on personal issues.

With the increase in the number of colleges and college students, school dormitories have long been unable to accommodate so many students. The safety, environment, and service quality of rental for off-campus housing have been more andmore attention. To achieve perfect educational function for college students, the administrators should not only enhance the quality of teaching and dormitory but also pay more attention to students renting house off-campus and to know whether they can get a better learning environment. Based on SERVQUAL scale, we develop a questionnaire which incorporating Kano two-dimension quality model into importance-performance analysis (IPA), to investigate college students living in dormitory and rental off-campus in Central Taiwan. Results showed that students do not concern the safety issues and counseling-related services. The students living in school dormitories were less satisfied than students who rented off-campus with the current residential services, but also were not satisfied significantly for “tangibility”such as hardware devices. This indicates that school administrators need to enhance the quality of residential service. According to quality attributes in Kano model, these two types’ students were classified into two distinct categories. Hence, the school administrators and rental businesses need to be strengthened to improve the qualities of residential service are also different. Improvements should be made for school administrators include “the regular maintenance and inspection of drinking water device”, “regular maintenance and inspection of electrical facility”, and “the availability of cable TV and internet”. To increase the attractiveness of school dormitory, more improvements are “discount or providing scholarships for lowincome students”, “providing the express service for mail collection and processing”,and "a better relationship between the landlords (or the administrators) and the tenants”. Moreover, improvements by rental businesses include “steps taking by the landlords in continuing to examine and improve the quality of service”, “excellent-viescape devices”, “providing a clean public areas (corridors, stairs)”, “prompt response by landlord for tenant inquiry”, and “excellent room ventilation, lighting, and noisecontrolled devices”. To increase rental competitiveness, “providing the express service for mail collection and processing” must be improved.

The purpose of this thesis is to discuss the feasibility evaluation of rooftop photovoltaic (PV) system on the campus building for National Central University in Taiwan. The research utilizes the real-measured data and simplified theoretical calculations to analyze the effect of climatic factors-solar irradiation and temperature to the PV systems, including the effect of power generation, inverter conversion efficiency, and peak wattage. In terms of simplified theoretical calculations, the discrepancies of each month on the mono-crystalline PV system is discussed. Then the research analyze actual power generation of PV system from December 2018 to March 2019. The results can be used as the reference basis for future construction of PV projects by assisting analyzation of equipment selection and income estimation. The results show that from the measured data, there is a significant proportional relationship between the amount of electricity generated and the amount of solar irradiation. Based on the results of 4 months of measured data, Experimental Center of Civil Engineering (ECCE) (A building) has better overall power generation efficiency than the indoor swimming pool (B building). The A building wins. This model can be utilized as a reference for the organizations to make decision when selecting objects for construction.

Abstract:
AbstractSupramolecular chemistry (SMC), at the interface between chemistry, physics and biology, is a research domain which has grown considerably in the last 40 years. Jean-Marie Lehn was the first to lay its foundations and formalise its concepts, in a seminal article published in 1978. This work earned him the 1987 Nobel Prize for Chemistry, which he shared with Charles J. Pedersen (DuPont) and Donald J. Cram (UCLA). The development of SMC has led to the creation of a dedicated institute and a new building on the university campus. In this chapter, the emergence of supramolecular chemistry as a paradigm and research speciality at the University of Strasbourg (France) is reconstructed with a focus on Lehn’s central role in this process, proposing a three-period chronology based on Mullins’ sequential model (1972). It is furthermore argued that the creation of a physical space, with particular architecture and functions, has also played a key role in consolidating what is now called the “Strasbourg’s chemistry”. The (multi)disciplinary character of SMC is discussed in reference to the concept of “new disciplinarity” put forward by Marcovich and Shinn (Soc Sci Inf 50(3–4):582–6062011, Toward a new dimension: exploring the nanoscale. Oxford University Press, Oxford, 2014).

Abstract:
AbstractOngoing urban densification in Nordic regions raises sustainability trade-offs related to compactness, land use and urban green space. In Norway, green spaces comprising both natural and agricultural areas are highly valued cultural landscapes protected by the status of ‘green structure’. Yet, neoliberal development forces put pressure on urban green spaces, potentially exacerbating social inequalities and challenging governance structures formally oriented towards sustainability. In the case of Trondheim, Norway, competing priorities under development pressures unfold in the upholding of urban green space strategies and public values between core and periphery areas. Based on interviews, popular media and policy analysis, this contribution uses the multi-actor perspective to compare two current cases of urban development in green areas in terms of shifting public discourses. The first covers development in the urban fringe, where land reserved for agricultural use succumbs to suburban development pressure. The second turns to development in urban green space at the central university campus, used by the public for parkland and recreation, which bowed to public pressure. The examples point to differing values regarding urban green space in core versus periphery areas that materialise in public opposition, triggering debate and institutional review. Compared to state and market sectors, the community sector is shown to be underrepresented in the processes shaping the development proposals, while citizen engagement is a determining factor in shifting public discourse. Results show the need for collaborative governance structures across sectors, using intermediaries, to support a deeper understanding and integration of multiple perspectives in the shaping and negotiation of local sustainability discourses.

Abstract:
Chapter 1 sets out the ways in which the status and identities of Muslims are caught up in the changing lives of universities. It begins with an account of the segregated seating controversy at University College London in 2013, illustrating how wider issues of power and cultural identity are evoked when the status of Islam within universities becomes the subject of public debate. This picture is developed and contextualized via an extended discussion of the nature of universities, set out as a series of contested histories, each of which privileges particular values and instates specific boundaries of cultural or academic legitimacy. Models considered are the university as public, as neoliberal, as a source of inclusion and exclusion, as postcolonial, and as a site of heightened risk. The chapter’s central aim is to consider how these strands contribute to the heightened ‘othering’ of Islam within ‘Western’ higher education.

Abstract:
Abstract The “official Story” is that Harvard established the Russian Research Center with the help of a preliminary grant of $100,000 from the Carnegie Corporation of New York to provide information to the State Department and other government agencies about contemporary Russia. An article in the Boston Traveler of December 5, 1947, the basis for an FBI memo of December 12, reported that the results of the Harvard research would be “made available to the State Department and other federal agencies, including the central intelligence group, through in formed channels long before publication by the university,” though the university declined to do any classified (secret) research. The State Department, though convinced of the importance of covert activities, was reluctant to engage in them itself. So were many professors, who were also eager to establish a permanent university-government relationship.

Abstract:
This introductory chapter reviews the central problem facing past theories of activist group participation: the assumption that all activists share the same motivations for joining and committing to activist groups and that all activists follow the same biographical pathways after participating in activist groups. The chapter illustrates this problem through a vignette of three activists mobilizing for LGBT equality at their Christian colleges and universities, one who fits the traditional portrait of a highly politicized activist, but two others who come from relatively conservative or apolitical backgrounds and contradict most assumptions about activists. After outlining the book’s intervention into the literature on activist group participation, the chapter then addresses the question of why readers should care about issues facing LGBT students at Christian colleges and universities, even though the federal government currently allows Christian colleges and universities to discriminate against LGBT people and even though LGBT people could theoretically choose to attend other schools. The chapter concludes with a brief discussion of the qualitative, in-depth interview data on 65 students at the book’s four primary sites, specifically, Belmont University, the Catholic University of America, Goshen College, and Loyola University Chicago.

Abstract:
Abstract Around the time Marshall was hired, Houston learned that NAACP members in Tennessee were concerned because, they believed, he had withdrawn from a university desegregation case there. Houston told his colleagues in Tennessee, ’This is no star performance.’ He was ’primarily the administrator’ of the legal campaign against discrimination, and he wanted to make sure that it would become ’self-perpetuating so that the loss of the head or any set of members will not hamper progress.’ One way to do that, he pointed out, was to ensure that ’Negroes not only have a few lawyers but dozens who can push the program through.’ Even more, ’switching and changing’ made the campaign more effective because it demonstrated to opponents that they could not derail the challenges merely by harassing Houston with ’personal reprisals.’ Houston understood a central fea-ture of civil rights litigation: that lawyers operated under constraints that limited their success. As Jeremy Bentham put it, ’The law is not made by judge alone, but by Judge and Company.’ Opposing lawyers, unsympathetic judges, clients, the NAACP as an organization, other interest groups-all were part of the ’company’ with which the NAACP’s lawyers had to deal.

Abstract:
Abstract Tracing Ankh-Hap’s journey to Texas led next to Drs. Mark Francis and Oscar Ball, professors at Texas A&M University in the early twentieth century. In 1914, they purchased the mummy and coffin from a financially strapped Chautauqua gathering in Wichita Falls, Texas. In 1921, the name on the coffin inscription was rendered to the public as “Anh-Hr-H3cpj,” known in A&M lore as Ramses’s tax collector and “the oldest Aggie.” Displayed for a time in a university museum until it was closed, the mummy and coffin were later stored in a campus restroom and forgotten except for the occasional efforts of a noted newspaper columnist, Frank Tolbert, to find “Anh-Hr-H3cpj.” In 1970, the coffin and mummy were relocated on permanent loan to the Houston Museum of Natural Science, where both are displayed today.

Abstract:
A new dual-campus subject librarian program is being rolled out at the University of Central Florida (UCF) whereby several subject librarians divide their time between two campuses, the legacy main campus in East Orlando and the new Downtown Orlando Campus. As of Fall 2019, four UCF subject librarians regularly travel to the new Downtown Campus to provide library support for academic programs, faculty, and students who recently relocated to the new facility. Dual-campus subject librarians are also maintaining support services for their assigned academic programs that remain at the UCF Main Campus. This article provides information and reflections about how the dual-campus subject librarian model operates and how it impacts staff duties from two perspectives. The first perspective is from the UCF Social Sciences subject librarian, who supports graduate and undergraduate programs in The School of Public Administration and Public Affairs graduate programs at the Downtown Campus, as well as graduate and undergraduate programs in Politics, Security & International Affairs and Criminal Justice at the Main Campus. The second perspective is from the Main Campus Head of the Research and Information Services Department, who supervises the dual-campus subject librarians.

Abstract:
The carbon reduction and sustainability goals of the University of California, Irvine require increased penetrations of intermittent renewables on the campus microgrid. These increased intermittent renewables create operational challenges related to conventional energy resources. To study these operational challenges, a holistic campus resource dispatch model was developed. The campus energy resources consist of a microgrid with ten 12 kV circuits emanating from one substation, 4 MW of solar photovoltaic, a central combined heat and power plant (19 MW), a district heating and cooling system, and an electric chiller-thermal energy storage system that provide electricity, heat, and cooling. The holistic model includes dynamic models of the combined heat and power (CHP) plant, the electric chiller-thermal energy storage system, and various renewable resources. In addition, models for complimentary technologies were also created to investigate their potential to increase renewable penetration on the campus microgrid. These include battery energy storage, demand response, and energy efficiency. Simulations with the holistic campus resource model revealed several important conclusions: (1) Regardless of renewable resource type, impacts on the CHP plant remains the same, i.e., increased renewable penetrations create reduced CHP plant capacity factors; (2) Local two axis CPV provides lower costs of electricity than local fixed PV at renewable penetrations below 23% after which local fixed PV provides a lower cost of electricity (3) Introduction of a battery into the campus microgrid achieves higher renewable penetrations and improves the operation of CHP plant; and (4) Electric energy storage does not always prove cost effective (i.e., At low renewable penetrations, electric energy storage is not cost effective; At 17% renewable penetration, electric energy storage begins to become cost effective).

Abstract:
The University of Central Florida Cogeneration Facility is a state of the art chilled water CHP system using a natural gas fueled high efficiency 60 Hz medium speed reciprocating engine as the prime mover. The facility features one lean burn 5.5 MW 18KU30GSI (MACH II-SI) spark ignition engine, generator, controls, auxiliaries, multi-effect absorption chiller, secondary cooling, and an advanced emissions control system that includes selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system and oxidation catalyst (OC). The cogeneration system is located on a constrained site in Orlando, Florida at the second largest university in the United States with a student enrollment of over 56,000. The site is adjacent to a sensitive environmental area to the east, a main thoroughfare to the south, student dormitories to the west, and a lecture hall to the north. The architecture of the new combined heat and power plant was carefully designed to blend with the surrounding campus architecture and sound attenuation methods were employed to minimize noise pollution from the power plant. The new chilled water system was interconnected to the existing campus chilled water facility, therefore requiring coordination with existing chilled water infrastructure as well as other existing electrical, water, sewer, and storm water utilities on the campus. This paper describes the plant load profile, design criteria, engine performance, chilled water production heat balance, and emissions requirements. The economic benefit to the University is discussed including both the impact of self generating power and augmentation of the existing chilled water system. In addition, the benefits of using modern 3-dimensional design tools are outlined for a brown-field location such as the subject site.

Full text
Abstract:
The year 2050 is considered the deadline for achieving the European climate goal of net zero emissions, an essential sustainability milestone. Current strategies ask for higher retrofitting rates in the building sector, as most of today’s buildings will still be standing and be used in 2050, and longer. However, retrofitting strategies must consider energy and emissions reductions alongside social sustainability, targeting not only the building but also its users. Historically, the focus has been on indoor environmental quality, while other aspects of human well-being such as the quality of views were not addressed as frequently. Educational buildings can function as lighthouse projects, profiting from its many users as communicators. This article presents the retrofitting potential of the central building complex of the Gløshaugen campus of the NTNU in Trondheim in terms of energy, as basis to study the impact of retrofitting strategies on the indoor environment. The study consists of a selection of details, their building physical assessment, and a proposal of retrofitting measures. The results highlight the importance of human-centric definitions in the early (re-)design stages. Humancentric planning aspects can have diverse positive influences on the building’s users, especially in educational and other highly cognitive settings. Their impact however is strongly dependent on the selection of measures and their implementation. Interactions of the many aspects of well-being that can be addressed during retrofitting must be studied further as their interdependencies are often unclear and case specific. Human-centric retrofitting can function as a guide for upcoming mass retrofits throughout Europe for the sustainable achievement of climate goals.

Abstract:
The 5th National Global Change Conference organised by the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) and the National Research Foundation (NRF), in partnership with the University of the Free State (UFS), took place at the Bloemfontein Campus of the UFS, from 30 January to 2 February 2023. The central theme of the 5th National Global Change Conference was: “Research and Innovation Accelerating transformations to global sustainability”. The Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) and the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) jointly hosted a hybrid special session titled, Transformative Futures for Water Security on 31 January 2023. The objectives of the session were to; 1. Obtain sector grounded suggestions to climate change adaptation for the water sector, and 2. Identify data and information gaps under the cloud of climate change to influence planning for a water secure future. This Special Session provided a multisectoral dialogue on South Africa’s water future and adaptation to the influence of climate change. The engagement proposed and discussed actions required nationally and regionally to strengthen water security in the face of global change. The following key recommendations were tabled from the session: 1. Engagement with communities to promote conservation of water resources must be a priority. 2. Municipalities need to develop own groundwater strategies to inform groundwater utilisation. 3. The process of transforming the water sector should be taken to local communities. 4. Water use quotas need to be stricter. 5. The implementation of solutions from the research community is commonly hindered bureaucratic processes; there needs to be means to minimize red tape.
