Abstract:
Introduction of English Medium Instruction (EMI) is linked to language development, mainly in countries where English is not the mother tongue of the majority of the population. It is believed that teacher questions that trigger teacher-student interaction, especially dialogic interaction in an EMI classroom, can help students’ content and language development. Hence, this study investigates the types of questions lecturers ask, and the patterns of interaction developed in the lecture deliveries in English Medium Instruction (EMI) undergraduate lectures of a Sri Lankan university. It also looks into the underlying reasons for such practices. Six lectures delivered by two lecturers were recorded for this purpose and they were transcribed verbatim. The lecture transcripts were analysed to find the questions lecturers asked and the subsequent pattern of interactions developed. Interview with lecturers informed the underlying reasons for the existing questioning patterns. The majority of the questions asked by the lecturers were rhetorical in nature, and only a limited number of non-rhetorical questions, which could create meaningful interactional episodes of dialogic nature, were found. This study enlightens that lecturers should be trained to ask non-rhetorical questions in order to develop interaction if the objectives of EMI are to be achieved.

Abstract:
The study reported on in this article investigated the use of Web 2.0 technologies by lecturers in the Faculty of Information Science and Communications at Mzuzu University (MZUNI), Mzuzu, Malawi. By distributing a questionnaire to 19 lecturers, conducting follow-up interviews with seven lecturers and analysing the curricula, the study showed that between 10 (58.8%) and 13 (76.5%) lecturers use Wikipedia, YouTube, blogs, Google Apps and Twitter to accomplish various academic activities, such as handing out assignments to students; receiving feedback from students; uploading lecture notes; searching for content; storing lecture notes; and carrying out collaborative educational activities. The study adopted the Decomposed Theory of Planned Behaviour (Taylor and Todd 1995) and the theory’s elements that strongly affected lecturers’ use of the technologies according to the results included attitude and perceived behaviour control. The study also found that poor Internet access remains the key stumbling block towards a successful adoption of Web 2.0 technologies by lecturers at MZUNI. To this end, the study recommends that the newly established Department of ICT Directorate with support from MZUNI management should install campuswide Wi-Fi and improve Internet bandwidth so that lecturers’ access to the Internet is not limited to their offices but rather is available in the teaching rooms across the campus.

Based on an analysis of naturally occurring interactions between lecturers and students, this article investigates how university lectures and seminars are brought to a close through the collaborative work of lecturers and students. The analysis focuses on, first, the resources that lecturers and students have to accomplish this (which include not just speech but also embodied conduct, as well as references to clock time and lesson phases); second, the active role that students play, who may engage in closing activities in ways that attempt to preserve the classroom order (e.g. by packing up silently while continuing to demonstrably listen) or in ways that are disruptive of it (e.g. by packing up noisily); and third, the occasional subversive role that students may adopt, who may attempt to initiate closings in order to cut the lecture or seminar short (e.g. by suggesting to the lecturer that he or she is going over time or by engaging in ‘premature’ closing activities).

Abstract:
Lecturer attendance record is required by the university to know the presence of lecturers in teaching in class. In general condition, lecturer attendance is recorded on the attendance sheet, or input to web application accessed on a class computer. However, there are some problems in its implementation so that at the end, lecturer presence is carried out using a manual form where the academic staff needs to re-enter the lecturer attendance data into the applications. Based on the above, the authors designed and developed a lecturer attendance information system to record lecturers' attendance using radio frequency identification technology by implementing a near field communication card (NFC Card). The device used to record and read presence data during lectures, by tapping an Mi-fare NFC card to an NFC reader / writer device. The flow of this research method begins with a literature study of NFC card, observe the flow of lecture attendance process and data recorded into lecturer attendance sheet, analyzing the database design, the system design which has compatible with NFC reader and writer devices, designed system interface and continue to develop system. The result is system consists of master data, system attendance, verification and reporting module. The results show that NFC card implementation is more practical for lecturers in conducting lecture attendance and NFC card could be tapped out into an NFC device at a maximum distance up to 7 cm with the reading angle relative to NFC reader/writer with range 00 until 300 can read NFC Card.

Abstract:
This study was an attempt to investigate types and functions of repair strategies used by lecturers in English literature lectures in a university in Indonesia. Rido’s conceptual framework of repair strategies (2018) was used. Qualitative method was applied while the data were collected through video recording of three English literature lectures, comprising prose, drama, and literary criticism. The findings showed that the lecturers repaired both the linguistic (grammatical and pronunciation errors) and content-related aspects of the students while they were giving oral responses and making presentations. Therefore, the lecturers employed four types of repair strategies such as indicating an error has been made and correcting it, asking students to make self-repairs, indicating an error has been made and getting other students to correct it, and repeating students’ responses with changes. The functions of those repair strategies were to show the lecturers as role model and reliable source of knowledge, to give good examples, to make students think critically, to give opportunity for students to share ideas, and make students not aware they were being corrected so that they kept learning. The findings offer some implications for pedagogical considerations within university lecture, especially in English as a foreign language (EFL) setting.

Abstract:
The research aimed to investigate the questioning strategies used by lecturers in English literature lectures an Indonesian university and how they were manifested. Applying the qualitative approach and Rido, Ibrahim, and Nambiar’s conceptual framework in 2015, the research analyzed three lectures of English literature consisting of prose, literary criticism, and drama. Data were collected through 300 minutes of video-recordings. The findings reveal that the lecturers employ various types of questions such as display, referential, follow-up, and rhetorical questions. The lecturers manifest the questions by rephrasing questions first, then nominating students, asking questions to the entire class, encouraging students to initiate questions, and moving closer to students when asking questions. The questioning strategies help the lecturers to lead the discussion, check students’ understanding, offer the students to share ideas, and improve students’ participation. As a result, the students become active in expressing thoughts, sharing ideas, and even initiating questions. The research can be a guideline for lecturers to create meaningful and interactive lectures to produce competent and critical students.

AbstractThe importance and amount of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) usage and English Medium Instruction (EMI) lectures continue to increase on university campuses as universities worldwide seek to promote internationalization among both the student body and the faculty. While EMI has become a priority, the teaching and learning that occurs within this framework needs to be monitored for effectiveness and efficiency. Many of the teachers and students in these EMI courses do not share a common first language and likely have a first language other than English. Therefore, they are operating in EMI with varying levels of second language (L2) English ability, which can lead to low levels of student comprehension, learning and satisfaction unless the lecturer takes special care in their delivery of content. This paper explores the linguistic composition of EMI lectures in the Swedish context and reports survey findings of students’ self-reported levels of comprehension related to lecture content and their lecturer’s L2 English use. Three case studies are described and illustrate various linguistic factors that can contribute to or inhibit student comprehension in EMI lectures. Pedagogic implications are presented with the intention of supporting EMI lecturers and their students.

Abstract:
The article deals with the change in lecturers’ role that takes place when traditional study process is being replaced by problem-based learning. In problem-based learning a lecturer becomes a facilitator not authoritatively transferring knowledge to students but contributing to the construction of social knowledge, in which an important role is given to students’ knowledge conditioned by their unique experience, learners’ interaction, their relations with various subjects of social environment. Together with lecturer’s changing role problem-based learning also provokes the transformation of power relations in university studies. Facilitation that makes up the basis of a lecturer’s role in problem-based learning causes quite many challenges because it is an unstructured process requiring lecturer’s ability to flexibly respond to students’ learning needs, provide them adequate support in a right way and time, etc.

Abstract:
Interaction management strategies are increasingly set to become a vital factor in fostering active participants in university lectures. Following Rido, Ibrahim & Nambiar’s (2015) framework, this study investigated interaction management strategies used in English literature lectures in a university setting in Indonesia. This study employed a qualitative method and the data were gathered through video recordings. The findings showed that all literature lecturers employed three kinds of interaction management strategies such as code strategies, emotional strategies, and managing strategies. In code strategies, the lecturers used English during the entire class for clarity in opening, explanation, example, and closing. Meanwhile, in emotional strategies, the lecturers shared common strategies namely using non-verbal gestures and using humours or jokes in order to invite participation, to increase student’s motivation, and to create conducive learning environment. Then, in terms of managing strategies, the lecturers decided topic, controlled or switched the topic of discussion, decided who speaks, gave direction or commanded the students, gave extended wait time, and offered opportunity for student to speak in order to enable the students express their ideas and engage with the lectures. It is hoped that insights gleamed from this study will assist such lecturers to successfully manage their lectures and navigate the distribution of participation as well as content of the lesson.

Abstract:
The article formulates the concept of university lecturers’ professional self-creation based on the theoretical analysis of scientific works and determinate the importance of reflection for their professional self-creation. The results of the performed empirical study on university lecturers’ reflection and its importance for their professional self-creation are presented. The following techniques were used: A. Karpov’s method examining reflexivity, D. Leontyev’s test “The differential type of reflection”, the method examining self-development and professional pedagogical work (L. Berezhnova, modification and adaptation by L. Podkorytova), the method examining an actualized need for self-development, the short scale for self-actualization. The examined university lecturers had average reflexivity (according to A. Karpov), general reflection, quasi-reflection and introspection (according to D. Leontiev) and high systemic reflection (according to D. Leontiev). The obtained results partially confirmed our hypothesis that lecturer’s reflection is average: it was really average in the terms of reflexivity, introspection and quasi-reflection, but high in the terms of systemic reflection. The lecturer’s had an average or higher desire for self-development and quite successfully implemented it, the respondents showed mostly high self-actualization. As for the identified problems in the studied sample, lecturers underestimated their personal qualities. The correlation analysis was applied for the studied indicators. A direct (positive) correlation was determined between university lecturers’ reflection and professional self-creation. Reflection, in general, contributed to lecturers’ professional creation, especially to the fulfilled need for self-development and self-creation. Systemic reflection was especially important for self-creation and self-development. We have substantiated and presented an art therapy program to develop university lecturers’ reflection. The program consisted of 10 lessons and contained art therapeutic exercises proposed by V. Kokorenko, L. Lebedeva, L. Podkorytova. The art therapy developing university lecturers’ reflection was chosen due to its following features: deep reflexive nature, resourcefulness, richness of metaphors. Further research are seen in increased sample volume and number of used psychological examining tools to clarify links between university lecturer’s reflection and their self-esteem, self-attitude, value system; to study analogues links characteristic for other professional groups; to approbate the developed art therapy training and to conduct a forming experiment to clarify a role of reflection in university lecturer’s professional self-creation.

Abstract:
<p>This study examined the millennial’s expectations of life at the university and the workplace.<br />Questionnaire data were obtained from 142 students aged 20 to 24 in a Malaysian public<br />university from different disciplines. The results showed that most of the participants were<br />highly feedback oriented and expected instant face-to-face feedback from their lecturers,<br />particularly when in emails. They relied on lecture notes to understand the lectures, but would<br />also look for supplementary reading materials. They expected lecturers to deliver interesting<br />lectures but would attend boring lectures to comply with lecture attendance rules. The results<br />also suggest that many participants would not sacrifice their personal time to meet either<br />assignment or work deadlines because they expected deadline extensions. Although the<br />participants preferred positive comments, they also expected to be reprimanded for<br />unsatisfactory work performance. They also expected a fair amount of individual work<br />compared to group work at the workplace. The findings suggest that the participants<br />generally had realistic expectations of university and work life.</p>

Teaching and learning activities, especially in Higher Education, from time to time develop along with the development of technology, especially information technology. Initially, the teaching and learning activities at the Faculty of Science and Technology of the Buddhist Dharma University (FST-UBD) used a manual system in the form of face-to-face class. The system (for several courses and meetings) developed into distance learning (e-learning) where lecturers and students did not meet in teaching and learning activities in the classroom but through the internet media. This distance learning system uses computer or laptop facilities. The e-learning system was developed into a mobile learning system, which is a distance learning system using an Android-based smartphone. In the mobile learning system, lecturers can provide lecture material and assignments to students. Students can view lecture material via cellphone and can download the material. Students can submit assignments to lecturers via cellphone. The University can provide information about the seminar to be held. Students can choose the seminar to be followed and can register for the seminar via cellphone. This application system can be run well and can help facilitate the process of teaching and learning activities for lecturers and students. Lecturers can upload material and assignments for students. Abstract:
This study aims at exploring the Performance Measurement System for Lecturer (PMSL) through a comparison study in three countries, namely Indonesia (MY), Singapore (IT), and Turkey (IMU). We uses multiple case study approach by conducting a comparative study. The data are obtained mainly using interview. Those lecturers assuming some offices and play some roles in formulating the lecturer performance policy are chosen to be this study’s informants, they are: Management and Organization Chair, Chairman of the university senate, Vice Rector for Academic Affair, and Member of Information Systems Audit Control. The results reveal that there are different PMSL patterns from the three research objects, i.e. MY (Indonesia), IT (Singapore) and IMU (Turkey). MY have fairly aggressive PMSL policy as compared to the other two campuses since they have to work harder to improve the performance of their lecturers who in this case have relatively lesser academic experiences at international level. MY reward special incentives for certain performance target and hold a science camp mentoring to improve their lecturers’ capabilities. Meanwhile, IT perform PMSL by classifying lecturer’s performance measurement into two tracks, namely teaching and research tracks. This makes lecturers more focused on and satisfied with their job, and eventually leads to an optimal performance level. Additionally, at IMU Turkey, to achieve lecturer optimal performance, the university prepares a policy related to three aspects: pedagogic (mentoring), knowledge management, and administration easiness. This research result is expected to give real contribution to the refinement of PMSL policy model at universities in Indonesia to allow it to trigger globally-competitive lecturer performance improvement (Global Achievement). This study explains how PMSL as a derivative of goal setting theory is effectively successfully implemented at a University in three different countries which in this case have different organizational cultures.

Abstract : University Scheduling is a way of allocating students, lecturers, and rooms, which is used for lectures in the available time slots. The common problems are that a lecturer is scheduled in the same time slot, or several courses are scheduled in the same room and the same time slot. For this reason, scheduling needs to be made in such a way that it can optimize the use of resources. We use simulated annealing as an approach to solve that problem. The results showed that the higher the initial temperature value used and the greater the iteration value would reduce the violation constraints in scheduling problems.

Information technology is no longer a complement, but a necessity in the academic world especially University. The presence of students in lectures is one important component in the learning process. The more students attend the class, the more students understand the lesson. In addition, the number of student attendance can also be a consideration for the lecturer in evaluating and taking action against the student. The current student attendance record is mostly still done manually by signing on a paper. The increasing number of students from year to year in University requires a system that can manage a large number of students data and the speed in obtaining access to information requires the university to build a system that can assist in the administration process in University. Online Presence System is a solution to overcome this, with this system then the recording of student presences can be done by scanning the RFID contained in the student card, no longer done manually using paperless. This will assist lecturers and administrative staff in managing the recapitulation of student attendance and can be a consideration for lecturers in evaluating and taking action against the students concerned. This study aims to know the effectivity of interpersonal communication in learning activities through WhatsApp Group Media, a research study using an effectiveness study proposed by Devito (1997) which says there are 5 general dimensions to measure the effectiveness of interpersonal communication activities including openness, empathy, supportive, attitude positive and equality. Based on the results of the presentation about the effectiveness of interpersonal communication in lectures using WhatsApp Group by the Communication Studies lecturer at the Raden Fatah State Islamic University of Palembang, it is known that WhatsApp Group can display various types of learning media in the form of visual media, audio, audio visual, and presenter groups. However, the WhatsApp group media cannot provide sample objects directly if the course requires sample objects to be demonstrated. This research shows that learning activities that only use WhatsApp Group media without using face-to-face lecture methods are ineffective, this is due to the many obstacles faced by students and lecturers when the lecture activities take place. Various obstacles faced are the small level of openness of students, empathy that is difficult to show both by students and by lecturers, the attitude of support is not as strong as learning is done by direct meeting in class, the attitude shown is largely the opposite of what is expected by the lecturer, as well as the equality of the meaning of learning materials both for students and for different lecturers. The substance of this paper was delivered as a public lecture at the Victoria University College, Wellington, New Zealand. It was one of a series of public lectures given by professors and lecturers at that College to mixed audiences. The author, Lecturer (and later Professor) in Law, challenges the notion that "the legal profession is a parasite infesting in the community, and ought to be extirpated" by exploring the true function of a lawyer. It is argued that the duty of the lawyer is to protect and enforce justice by serving their function as officers of the Courts of New Zealand, and that the profession will continue as long as there remains injustice in the world.
