Abstract:
Campus sustainability and sustainable food production at universities across the nation are gaining in popularity, and student led gardens are an important and distinctive part of this movement. Student initiatives at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) have led to the creation of a Sustainability Council and Green Fund which has provided a tremendous amount of support for the student led organic garden (LOGIC) on SIUC's campus. The purpose of this research was to provide a thorough, evaluative case study of the campus garden at SIUC in order to explore its past, its current structure and resources, and to suggest a model for its future. Through student surveys and qualitative interviews with key experts it was found that a paid garden manger position, consistent funding, more production, more volunteers, more awareness, and a critical look at current goals and practices were needed for LOGIC's continued success.

Abstract:
In recent years the focus and application of sustainability in buildings has risen. Both for environmental and human well-being reasons. The quality of the indoor environment affects the well-being, productivity and work performance, but it can also affect the occupants negatively, like increasing risks of different diseases and health issues. A good indoor environment alongside with sustainable materials, proper HVAC (Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) installations and building code regulations contribute to a sustainable solution with low environmental impact and reduced energy consumption. Since buildings alone are responsible for 38% of all human GHG (Greenhouse gas) emissions (Wikipedia, 2017), most countries recommend new more sustainable solutions to reduce that percentage. For example, in the EU, the 2020 climate and energy package targets to: cut 20% in greenhouse gas emissions, 20% of EU energy from renewables and 20% improvement in energy efficiency (European Comission, n.d.). In addition to the positive aspect of low environmental impact new constructions have, they also create a good living or working environment for the users. Studies have shown that a better indoor quality increases the productivity and work performance, but most of all the occupants feel comfortable and satisfied with their environment. A great number of papers have reviewed the acoustic, visual, thermal comfort and indoor air quality, which are main aspects of the indoor climate. Most papers focus on the users’ perception of these four aspects as well as other parameters that influence the indoor environment (architectural geometry, materials, etc.). Similarly, in this study case I focus on two different methods of obtaining the results, the objective method that contains the indoor environment measurements and the subjective method which includes a questionnaire created specifically for this research project. By obtaining these two sets of data, key focus points are developed, such as if the building’s certification meets the recommendations of Miljöbyggnad, what aspects influence the students’ perception the most, and whether there are any distinct connections between measured and calculated data. This study case was developed in a university building in Stockholm, where the four main aspects of the indoor environment were evaluated. The physical parameters such as temperature, air velocity, relative humidity, CO2 concentration and acoustics were measured in five different classrooms. In addition, a survey was developed for this study which included perception questions of the thermal, visual, acoustic comfort and indoor air quality. As found in other studies, gender and climate zone origin affected the overall indoor environmental perception. Even though the majority of both genders voted for “no change”, the remaining females answered that they preferred the conditions warmer. Also, the majority of answers from all climate zones were “no change”. However, the second highest opinion for students from warmer climate zones was “warmer”, which has also been found in other studies. Significant negative correlations were found between the acoustics and the satisfaction level of the acoustic comfort. Similarly, high correlations were observed between the visual comfort satisfaction level and the three aspects influencing it. Furthermore, the results showed that all physical measurements influenced the students’ thermal comfort and indoor air quality perception. All measurements obtained indicated a good indoor environment in all classrooms, and all values were between the Swedish Standards recommendations. Low correlation was found between the measured PVM and the AMV from the questionnaires even though all the values were among the limitations. Lastly, this study reviews methods that could be applied to similar future studies and, discusses what kind of errors to avoid in the future. There is still a lot of research that can be developed in order to gain a deeper understanding of the indoor environment and how humans perceive it.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the development of environmental sustainability on 194 of the wealthiest colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. Campus-based environmental organization membership data, organizational profiles, participant observation, and sustainability grades (from the Sustainable Endowment Institutes College Sustainability Report Cards 2009) are used to examine the relationship between campus-based environmental organizations and sustainability of higher educational institutions. Linear regression is used to analyze the overall university sustainability grades as an outcome variable. Overall university sustainability grades are impacted by campus-based environmental activism social movement organizations, high endowment per student, the age of the university, and the presence of state renewable portfolio standards. My findings suggest that the Sustainable Endowment Institute s College Sustainability Report Card might be improved by including indicators of greenhouse gas reports and interdisciplinary courses on sustainability.

Abstract:
Sustainable development is one of the biggest challenges of the twenty fist-century. Various university has begun the debate about the content of this concept and the ways in which to integrate it into their policy, organization and activities. Universities have a special responsibility to take over a leading position by demonstrating best practices that sustain and educate a sustainable society. For that reason universities have the opportunity to create the culture of sustainability for today’s student, and to set their expectations for how the world should be. This thesis aim at analyzing how Delft University of Technology and University of Bologna face the challenge of becoming a sustainable campus. In this context, both universities have been studied and analyzed following the International Sustainable Campus Network (ISCN) methodology that provides a common framework to formalize commitments and goals at campus level. In particular this work has been aimed to highlight which key performance indicators are essential to reach sustainability as a consequence the following aspects has been taken into consideration: energy use, water use, solid waste and recycling, carbon emission. Subsequently, in order to provide a better understanding of the current state of sustainability on University of Bologna and Delft University of Technology, and potential strategies to achieve the stated objective, a SWOT Analysis has been undertaken. Strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats have been shown to understand how the two universities can implement a synergy to improve each other. In the direction of framing a “Sustainable SWOT” has been considered the model proposed by People and Planet, so it has been necessary to evaluate important matters as for instance policy, investment, management, education and engagement. Regarding this, it has been fundamental to involve the main sustainability coordinators of the two universities, this has been achieved through a brainstorming session. Partnerships are key to the achievement of sustainability. The creation of a bridge between two universities aims to join forces and to create a new generation of talent. As a result, people can become able to support universities in the exchange of information, ideas, and best practices for achieving sustainable campus operations and integrating sustainability in research and teaching. For this purpose the project "SUCCESS" has been presented, the project aims to create an interactive European campus network that can be considered a strategic key player for sustainable campus innovation in Europe. Specifically, the main key performance indicators have been analyzed and the importance they have for the two universities and their strategic impact have been highlighted. For this reason, a survey was conducted with people who play crucial roles for sustainability within the two universities and they were asked to evaluate the KPIs of the project. This assessment has been relevant because has represented the foundation to develop a strategy to create a true collaboration.

Abstract:
Institutions of higher learning are in a pivotal position to address the environmental problems that global society faces now, but response to this challenge requires transformation in priorities and practices. Recognizing the impacts that universities have on the environment and the social and economic costs associated with these impacts, institutions of higher learning are changing policies and management to become more sustainable. Sustainability is defined by the World Commission on Environment and Development as "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs" (1987). To evaluate the environmental impacts and level of sustainability at Western Kentucky University, ten indicators were assessed: Building Design, Energy, Water, Land, Air, Solid Waste, Purchasing, Transportation, Food and Dining, and Environmental Literacy. Average annual energy consumption for each campus community member is 4,139 kWh of electricity, 527 pounds of coal, 3,600 cf of natural gas, totaling over 22 million Btus, costing $317 and emitting 3.34 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, 14,244 gallons of water are used, and 248 pounds of solid waste are generated per campus community member annually. WKU's physical growth provides opportunities to incorporate elements of energy efficiency and sustainable design into new buildings and renovations that provide permanent savings in energy and water. University energy costs and carbon footprint can be reduced through initiatives including physical and policy change and education campaigns that engage students, faculty, and staff. Sustainable building design and construction and energy conservation have indirect positive impacts, reducing water use, blending with the natural landscape, and reducing water and air pollutants. Less than 4% of WKU's solid waste is recycled. Investment in recycling infrastructure can make recycling economically self-supported through revenue and avoided landfill fees. WKU has no policy for environmentally responsible purchasing. A "green purchasing" guide could promote the use of recycled content paper, and energy efficient appliances. University shuttles are decreasing carbon emissions by using 5% biodiesel, and plan to increase the blend. Campus-community initiatives such as bike lending and expanding shuttle service are progress toward sustainability. Further steps could include purchase of university fleet hybrid cars and a ride-share program for commuters. According to Worldwatch Institute, food transportation is the biggest, fastest growing source of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. WKU food services could decrease the university's carbon footprint while supporting the local economy by using food produced locally, and reduce environmental impacts and landfill fees by composting food waste. A survey sent to WKU faculty requesting submissions of courses including sustainability as a concept resulted in 42 courses from within four main campus Colleges. Ecological literacy is essential in preparing students to be productive and engaged citizens of a global society. Efforts toward sustainability reduce the university ecological footprint and have far-reaching positive impacts in reduced operating costs, improved quality of services to students and faculty, and providing a model for local communities. Universities invested in sustainability also give their graduates critical knowledge and skills to find creative solutions to challenges facing society.

Barringer, Ellen R. "A Mixed Methods Assessment of the Development, Use, and Educational Effectiveness of University Campus Sustainability Tours." TopSCHOLAR®, 2015. http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/1532.

Full text
Abstract:
Campus sustainability tours are available at dozens of colleges and universities across the United States. These tours are considered a vital tool in interpreting the environmental and sustainable aspects of a campus to educate the campus community. Minimal quantitative data have been collected regarding their development, use, and effectiveness. In order to develop a dataset regarding the use of campus sustainability tours, surveys and interviews were sent to universities with such tours to discuss use and methods of development. A campus-wide electronic survey was sent to the Western Kentucky University (WKU) main campus community to determine their experiences with the WKU Green Tour. Pre- and post-tests were distributed to students at WKU before and after their experience with the tour to establish whether learning occurred. Professors were surveyed to determine the current use of the tours within classrooms. Best practices regarding the development of campus sustainability tours are not available. There is virtually no quantitative information available on the tours’ use and effectiveness. The WKU Green Tour, which relies upon campus signage to gain attention, sees little use since the signs tend not to capture attention. According to collected data, members of the campus community who do notice the signs find them interesting and learn new information. The guided tour, self-guided tour, and Green Tour lecture all saw significant knowledge gain in students, demonstrating educational effectiveness. Many barriers prevent professors from using the tours, but some supplemental tour items are suggested to improve classroom use. Based on data collected and analyzed as part of this study, tour developers should target the existing campus community rather than focusing solely on campus visitors. Relying on passive signage to capture attention reaches few members of the campus community. The significant knowledge gain demonstrated in classroom use of the Green Tour creates a strong argument for targeting professors as a user group. WKU faculty would likely increase their use of the Green Tour if provided with supplemental tools such as brochures, a virtual tour, and pre-made assignments. These tools should be made available to instructors with guidance in usage and incorporation.

Garcia, Monica Elisa. "Occupational Noise Exposure Evaluation of a group of Groundskeepers at a University Campus." Scholar Commons, 2017. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/6704.

Full text
Abstract:
Every year, twenty-two million workers are exposed to potentially damaging noise at work. Last year, U.S. businesses paid more than $1.5 million in penalties for not protecting workers from noise. (OSHA, 2016). In the United States ten million people have some kind of noise related hearing loss (CDC, 2016) and noise damage to the ear may not be detected until it is great enough to cause hearing impairment. Grounds keeper’s functions consist of a variety of activities that require the use of powered tools such as mowers, riding mowers, leaf blowers, pressure washers, trimmers/edgers and chainsaws. OSHA has stated that “noise is a potential hazard for most jobs that involve abrasive or high-power machinery, impact of rapidly moving parts (product or machinery), or power tools”. (OSHA, 2016) in addition to this, their job is mostly outdoors exposing them to the added noise of traffic, construction and people. The purpose of this research study was to obtain occupational noise exposure data for groundskeepers who use powered equipment to do their job. The groundskeepers who participated in this research study were volunteers and worked in a University campus in the State of Florida. Personal noise dosimeters were used to collect the data in this study. Exposure information was collected over 6 days for 8-hour work shifts during the summer months of the year. Dosimetry was done on a maximum of five groundskeepers per monitoring day, ranging from 1 to 5 employees per day depending on availability. Results of this study indicate that the highest noise exposures occurred on groundskeepers in charge of mowing by means of a riding mower. Results of this study indicate that the highest 8-hr TWA noise exposure for the groundskeepers (GK) 1 and 2 occurred the first day of testing which was a Monday. Using the OSHA PEL measurement method GK1 exposure was 98.5 dBA, GK2 was 97.6 dBA. Using the same measurement method the highest exposure to GK3: 89.2 dBA, occurred on day five of the assessment. For GK4 the highest exposure occurred on the third day of testing with an exposure measurement of 86.1 dBA. GK5 was only assessed one day and his exposure measured at 84.5 dBA. GK6 AND GK7 were evaluated two days and their highest exposures measured at GK6: 89.3 dBA and GK7: 85.7 dBA. Using the OSHA Hearing Conversation Act measurement method, GK1 was exposed to excessive noise levels (>85 dBA as an 8-hr TWA) on five days of the six day assessment period. GK2 was exposed to hazardous noise levels on all four days he was assessed. GK3 and GK4 exceeded the OSHA HCA standard one of the two days they were monitored. GK 5 did not have noise exposure levels above 85 dBA on the day he volunteered for monitoring. GK6 had exposures over 85 dBA on both days he volunteered to be monitored. Finally, GK7 exceeded the 85 dBA limit on one of the two days they volunteered for this study.

Full text
Abstract:
Objectives: 1) To describe the interprofessional implementation process and programmatic outcomes of an inaugural drug take-back event on a university campus; 2) To quantify donated medications and summarize donor demographics. Method: East Tennessee State University (ETSU) affiliated colleges, campus organizations, research teams, law enforcement and other community partners collaborated to host the inaugural live drug take-back event on ETSU’s main undergraduate campus. Programmatic outcomes included the number of community stakeholders, ETSU participating colleges, student donors, and donated medication metrics, including controlled substance medications. All donated medications were quantified by drug name and controlled substance schedule. Donor demographic information and perceptions of drug abuse on campus were collected using a brief survey. Results: Fifty pounds of medications were collected for disposal by 42 donors (9 students; 33 non-students). Controlled substances accounted for 8% of donated medications. Nearly 80% of student donors were enrolled in Academic Health Science Center colleges. Aggregate survey results indicated concerns about prescription drug abuse and misuse on campus. Three faculty members, two research fellows, two doctoral students, three graduate assistants and eight professional students from ETSU’s Colleges of Pharmacy and Public Health, as well as additional staff members, represented the contributing community entities and colleges during the live event. Implications: Conduction of drug take-back events on a university campus can promote interprofessional public health interventions and simultaneously reduce opportunities for nonmedical use of prescription drugs in college students. Further research is warranted to establish best practices and maximum impact for college-based take-back events.

Edelman, Loren Michell. "Evaluation of a workshop method for increasing awareness of sexual harassment on Rhodes University Campus." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1009450.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this study was twofold: 1) to educate and inform the student population about sexual harassment, and 2) to evaluate which one of two different training programs would be more effective in increasing awareness of sexual harassment on campus. A pre-test post-test group design was implemented. A sample of students (N=132) living in 14 different Rhodes university residences participated in the study on a voluntary basis. Subjects were divided into two groups. Group 1, participated in a workshop based upon a video entitled One man's meat is another man's poison, produced by the University of Cape Town. Group 2, was subjected to a more passive educational method where the video was played from beginning to end without any interruption. Awareness of sexual harassment was operationalised in terms of the subjects' attitudes towards sexual harassment, their perceptions of sexual harassment, and their sexual harassment myths. Results suggested a significant relationship between participation in the training programs and a change in awareness of sexual harassment, as measured by the changes in the pre-test and post-test scores. Results also suggested that males benefit most by simply viewing the video, while females benefit most by workshopping the same video.

This research examined the concepts of sustainability on an university campus. To sustain this theme, firstly it was brought up the debate on need to seek a sustainable development, then the challenge that organizations face to suit this purpose and, finally, the reflection on the role of the university on this perspective. Thus, the questions that establish the course of the study are: what is a sustainable campus? And how does it work a management model that integrates the values of sustainability? To answer the first question, it was looked for support in the academic theoretical framework. The aspects that indicate the sustainability of a university campus were analyzed and a chart that synthetizes these aspects was made, being applied as a standard for the field study. The field study aimed to answer the second question of this research: how does it work a management model that integrates the values of sustainability? This was accomplished through a case study on the campus of PUC-SP at Barueri. Data collection for this study came about through in-depth interviews conducted with employees from the campus, analysis of documents provided by the direction of campus and participant observation conducted by the researcher. Evidence shows that the social group under analysis is in an early stage of the quest for sustainability. However, it presents actions on almost all the investigated aspects. The analysis of the campus was made through positive and negative considerations about each of the aspects investigated, of which the negative reviews were brought by the interviewees themselves. Although sustainability is in the agenda of most organizations and under an intense debate, many questions remain to be investigated about the role of the university on the sustainable development and about the real contributions it can offer to this subject. Through the debate established in this research and its field study, it was possible to analyze the interaction of the theoretical dimension and what actually occurs in a real context

Abstract:
Educational Psychology
Ph.D.
Campus mediation programs (CMP's) experienced a rapid growth in higher education institutions from 18 programs in 1990 to more than 200 programs in 1998 (Warters, 2000). During that period, CMP's became a widely accepted approach for addressing conflict within US colleges and universities. However, recent data indicate that there are just over 100 programs which points to a decline and raises questions as to the value of campus mediation programs to higher education institutions. A hindrance to addressing the questions raised has been the limited amount of empirical research and published data on evaluation use within campus mediation programs. Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to gather information from US campus mediation program directors regarding their use of program evaluation in order to suggest ways to improve their evaluation efforts. Campus mediation program directors were surveyed on their perceptions of evaluation use in their respective programs. This study was conducted over a period of six months using a web-survey and follow-up telephone interviews. The web-based survey used in this study was adapted from an online campus mediation program survey developed by Rick Olshak and modified. The web-survey consisted of four sections: Demographics, Description of Services, Evaluation and Program Profile. The population consisted of 108 campus mediation program directors in US higher education institutions who were solicited for this study and agreed to participate. Of the 108 directors, there were a total of 59 respondents representing a 55% response rate. There were nine respondents who participated in a follow-up telephone interview. Data analysis for the research questions utilized rank order, frequencies, and averages; supplemental analyses utilized an independent samples t-test, one-way ANOVA's and Pearson correlations. Results indicated that evaluation received one of the lowest priority ranking as a program goal, however, most of the directors indicated that they would be very interested in learning different ways of improving their evaluation methods and having a standard evaluation process. The most prevalent concerns and recommendations from the telephone follow-up interviews focused on acquiring buy-in of administration and campus affiliates, improving program surveys, addressing budget cuts and decreasing high staff turnovers.

Abstract:
Construction is an investment intensive industry which has been notoriouslyknown to be cost and time ineffective. Further, the construction industry isknown to be the world’s largest resource utilizer and the largest polluter.Hence sustainability in construction is necessary.Since Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) are one of the most importantstakeholders in construction, this research aims to determine the sustainabilityaspects taught in Swedish construction programmes. On comparing the aimsand outcomes of all construction courses to the United Nations SustainableDevelopment Goals (SDGs), this research found that Swedish constructioneducation programmes lack political and social sustainability in theirconstruction curricula. Further, this research investigates the challenges toimparting sustainability education due to present research andpedagogical/teaching methods. Data to investigate the results was collectedthrough interviews with programme directors from various SwedishUniversities. The findings of this research show a connection between practical application, research and traditional education. Further, the factors affecting research andpedagogy are also inter-related and convoluted. A large cause and effectnetwork arising due to the interplay of the factors is addressed in thediscussions section. This thesis finds that sustainable development inconstruction requires development of sustainability evaluation methods as wellas combined efforts from various stakeholders and professions.

Abstract:
Thesis (M.A. (Social Work)) --University of Limpopo, 2013
The study aimed at evaluating social work fieldwork practice at the University of Limpopo (Turfloop Campus) in relation to theory. The alignment of social work theory and practice is the goal of Social Work profession. Fieldwork practice in social work education forms the practical component of a social work curriculum. It is an essential bridge from classroom to service delivery settings as it provides an opportunity for social work students to connect theoretical education and fieldwork practice. However there is lack of integration between Social Work theory and Social Work fieldwork practice. There is indeed a continuing tension between theory and practice. With regard to the methodology, a combination of quantitative–qualitative research approach was used. Self-administered questionnaires, interview guide and focus group discussions were used to collect data from 3rd year and 4th year social work students as well as agency-based supervisors. The study revealed that social work fieldwork practice is essential for the integration of theory into practice. Therefore the department of Social Work at the University of Limpopo should organize workshops for agency-based supervisors to update their theoretical knowledge base. Fieldwork assessment tool should be reviewed and Social work students should also be involved in the assessment process and self-assessment should also be introduced.

This academic research takes the of moderning process at the library of the University of Tocantins (UFT) on the Campus of Palmas, with it to see the preliminary results of this moderning process are articulated information needs of the academic community. Also understand if there is any relationship between the Institutional Evaluation of the National Assessment of Higher Education (SINAES) and the process of moderning of that library. For this analysis we considered the opinions of members of academic community, so this assessment were not adopted indicators or quality standards previously established. The approach of this evaluative research is interpretive, since of the concept of evaluation of public policies Lejanos (2006), and the mode of assessment is the investigation of this case study. The data were get and analyze resources by triangulation of methods, since they were involved in this study qualitative and quantitative data collected through bibliographical research, participant observation, questionnaires and interviews. We conclude that the process of modernization of the campus library Palmas is considered by its users as significant. However, their investments and actions are conducted in a fragmented way, so the infrastructure for information technology, human resources and the body do not match the needs of users of that library. The design employed in this modernization process is technical and managerial, whose meaning is agility, control and standardization of services of eight libraries of UFT. Note also that this process of modernization were prioritized administrative tasks of the library, so that there was an attempt to focus on meeting the requirements of the evaluation of SINAES, in detriment of the expectations of the academic community. From these data we conclude that this process is consistent with the historical background and the assumptions of the modernization project of the Brazilian higher education, which is based on liberal ideals and emphasizes the technical aspects, the increased efficiency of public administration, productivity, cost effectiveness and so on. It is recommended that the UFT discuss the process of modernization with library users, in order to carry out a systematic planning for continuity, it is also suggested the appointment of an interdisciplinary team to accompany him. Moreover, it is important to effective and expanded student participation in the Steering Committee of the Library System of UFT. So, generally identified that need public policies that coordinate and fund the development of federal university libraries.

This work evaluated the asphalt pavements of the Federal University of Viçosa (UFV), where functional and structural data were collected based on the rules of the Departamento Nacional de Infra-estrutura de Transportes (DNIT). The pavements of the campus were divided in homogeneous subparts. In function of technical characteristics of the pavements, some methodologies proposed by the DNIT had little changes because the DNIT s rules used in this work were developed for using in pavements with technical standard, which were different of urban pavements. The functional analyses followed the roles of DNIT 006/2003 PRO e DNIT 009/2003 PRO, for the objectives and subjective superficial evaluations, respectively. In the deflectometer measurements, the methodology proposed by DNER ME 024/94 was used, which is referent to the determinations of the pavement s deflection through the Benkelman beam. More than 80% of the subparts objectively evaluated received scores between terrible and bad . However, in the subjective evaluation, the subparts received scores between good and regular . In the subparts studied on the deflectometer evaluation, according to the roles of the structural evaluation of the DNIT, was observed the necessity of complementary studies, to obtain more data on such pavements and subsequently develop projects aiming the improvement of structural conditions of these pavements. This work consists of the preliminary study of structural conditions survey of the asphalted pavements of the UFV. The analyses and interpretation of the data related to the structural and superficial conditions of these pavements will be used to the supervision and planning of works to improve them.

Thomas, James W. "CAMPUS AS HOME: AN EXAMINATION OF THE IMPACT OF STUDENT HOUSING AT THE UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY IN THE PROGRESSIVE ERA." UKnowledge, 2017. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/epe_etds/47.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation explores how student housing impacted the college campus of the University of Kentucky in the Progressive Era. Student housing has long been part of the college ideal but lacked full engagement by many administrators. Through three examinations, housing will be shown to have directly influenced the administrative, social, and staffing elements of the college campus. The role student housing played in the interaction of political, rural, and sociological changes on the campus during the time period allows exploration in detail while addressing the changes within those areas of the state as well. While housing was an afterthought by the administration due to oversight and lack of funding throughout much of the examined history (1880-1945), its consideration was still an essential part of student life and part of the college ideal. Housing was a place wholly of the student – while administrators set policies and the government had a concern for it at various times, it was also a place where, originally, a “boys will be boys” mentality slid by, unapproved, but unthreatened. However, how did the politics of the state shape the college and its housing experience? How did the addition of women students, the first of many major additions that were foreign to the original student population of mostly rural males, change the campus and its structures? Originating in the “environment” of student-centered housing – be it boarding houses, Greek houses, or dormitories, the students who populated these facilities would cajole, alter, and sometimes force the campus through both intentional and unintentional engagements and interactions. This dissertation shall establish an understanding of how the administration, particularly the presidency, viewed student housing. Following the introduction, three sections shall detail instances of housing influencing the campus climate in ways previously understudied. First, an examination of the political climate of the state interacted with concerns about student housing as a key factor in ending the presidency of Barker. The second section will show how a judicial ruling created new forms of student services – granting in loco parentis control but also creating the need for the diversification of services beyond what had existed previously. The third section will denote, in detail, how housing women changed the college campus – expanding its borders and the need for services. Through such examinations, a previously unexplored role of student living quarters as affecting the growth and development of the University of Kentucky into the institution it is now shall become apparent.

Abstract:
Sustainable development (SD) as a concept and principle aims to find solutions to balance the needs of people worldwide with the resources and limits of the Earth’s ecosystems. Given their social responsibility in educating future generations, higher education institutions (HEIs) are increasingly expected to foster SD. This results in an emerging body of literature addressing the implementation efforts of HEIs in their core competencies of research and education, but also within their institutional structures and support functions. Against this backdrop, two major renowned European HEIs, the Universities of Goettingen (Germany) and Uppsala (Sweden), have also committed to driving sustainability. This exploratory case study therefore critically examines the universities’ path toward becoming more sustainable, contributing to an area of research that is still limited. Using qualitative tools like content analysis, different data in three main areas are analyzed to assess the status quo of measures to drive sustainability: institutional framework and governance, campus operations, and student initiatives. The research yields mixed results. While both universities are doing advanced work in some areas, improvement is possible and needed in many others. Uppsala University appears to have a more strategic approach to promoting SD overall, however, the university’s efforts currently appear to be leveling off. At the University of Goettingen, on the other hand, the issue has not yet been systematically addressed, making the achievement of the HEI’s climate targets and timely improvement unlikely if the current practice is maintained. In addition, the study reveals that the documentation and presentation of concrete measures and agendas at both universities could be enhanced, as the availability, accessibility and timeliness of the necessary data is often lacking. While different recommendations can be made for the two universities, the thesis concludes that university leadership should address sustainability more effectively through a strategic approach and the continuous involvement of various stakeholder groups should be envisioned.

Abstract:
Thesis (M.A.(Clinical Psychology)) -- University of Limpopo, 2015.
The effect of Cumulative Mild Head Injury (CMHI) in contact sports, such as rugby, is seen increasingly at school level where more and more injuries are reported. Research on CMHI in contact sport is needed specifically amongst previously disadvantaged groups where little or no research has taken place. The research is thus intended to seek a better understanding of CMHI in the contact sport of rugby specifically amongst amateur players. A quantitative research approach was utilised with a quasi-experimental research design. A sample of 18 student rugby players and 18 volleyball (non-contact sport) controls was used. In terms of mean performances the tests did not reveal a consistent pattern of deficits which is typically associated with the effects of Cumulative Mild Head Injuries. There were significant results however, in terms of variability that suggests potential deficits in attention among the rugby group. The results are therefore indicative of a poorer overall cognitive profile for the rugby playing group. It is concluded that the increased variability may be displayed in individuals who suffer CMHI at an earlier age.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT: The present work is developed on the territory of Alto da Ajuda, namely of the University Campus of Ajuda, between an urban area, densified by the social neighborhoods, adjacent to Palácio Nacional da Ajuda, and a natural area, starring Tapada da Ajuda and Monsanto Forest Park. The territory covered has temporarily suffered successive uncontrolled and unorganized expansions, leading to various discontinuities and urban deficiencies. The insertion of the University Campus, in order to house a group of faculties, and thus to stimulate a dignified and charismatic space, came to reflect and accentuate the precarious situation of that part of the city, largely due to its unfinished plans and, later, adulterated, creating a careless and unattractive image. Situation, later accentuated by constructions of an introspective character, which, by configuring a physical and visual barrier under the natural space of Monsanto, contribute to an urban segregation, translating into an area without relations and continuities, both with its urban and natural surroundings, as in their university space. This work focuses on the themes of a new urban design, which assumes a new paradigm, sustainability, where the ecological aspect assumes more relevance. In this context, the present work seeks to expose the need to configure the area of the University Campus, creating a relationship with its urban and natural surroundings, namely the city and the Monsanto Natural Park, respectively. This intention materializes through the renaturalization of the public space between the faculties of the Pole, which translates into the proposal of an urban green space that aims to create a physical and social relationship between the faculties and equipment that constitute it.

This dissertation, through the in-depth evaluation methodology, has the objective of analyzing the Support Program for Restructuring and Expansion Plans of the Federal Universities (REUNI) at the Federal University of MaranhÃo at Campus Pinheiro. The program, which began in 2007 and ends in the year 2012, becomes a topic that is much discussed and evaluated by many researchers, because its general objective of increasing enrollments has promoted academic and structural changes. In order to deepen these changes, the bibliography chosen, the institutional documents and questionnaires based and promoted results beyond what was expected. To complement the research, was also made historical, social and economic survey of the city of Pinheiro. The study showed that it is through the adhesion to REUNI that the Pinheiro Campus resumes academic activities through the provision of regular courses, as well as, it promotes an exchange of cultures due to the number of servers and students coming from other regions. These students now reside in the municipality of Pinheiro, following their approval in public competition or in the case of students, by the National High School Examination. This characteristic of pluriculturalism favors coordinated social and educational actions based on Extension Projects to address local handicaps. The research sought to understand how extension projects are being planned and executed. Finally, it is possible to identify differences in the extensionist proposals developed before REUNI and after REUNI.

Teh, Chor Tik. "Compliance and impact of corporate governance best practice code on the financial performance of New Zealand listed companies : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Business and Admnistration at Massey University, Auckland campus, New Zealand." Massey University, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10179/1004.

Full text
Abstract:
The corporate governance best practice code (Code) of the New Zealand Exchange (NZX) came into effect on October 29, 2003. However, so far there is no systematic study of compliance with and impact of NZX Code on the performance of NZX companies. This study attempts to provide some answers to the perceived knowledge gap. The NZX Code recommends certain governance mechanisms to enhance corporate performance. The mechanisms analysed in this study are the percentage of independent directors, duality, presence of board subcommittees (audit, remuneration, and nomination), and the performance evaluation of board and individual directors. This thesis examines the possible relationship between recommended governance structures and the performance of NZX companies for the years 2003 (pre-Code) and 2007 (post Code), using data from the same 89 companies for each year. Although the number of companies adopting the NZX structures has increased, the rate of full compliance of the Code remains disappointingly low, rising from 5.6% in 2003 to just 22.5% in 2007. Probably due to the small sample size relative to the number of independent variables, and the problem of co-linearity, the multiple linear regression results do not seem to be conclusive and may be unreliable as the basis to form any formal statistical inference. However, treating the 89 companies as the whole population (89 out of 90), and using a simpler and more descriptive statistical tool to analyse the impact of individual independent variables on firm performance, the 2007 results show a consistent pattern of a positive relationship between Code compliance and firm performance, assuming all other factors being constant. This positive relationship is further reinforced by dividing the population into the various industry groupings as classified by the NZX, which also results in a consistent pattern of companies which comply fully with the Code structures financially outperforming companies that only partially comply with the Code during 2007. Surprisingly, listed companies adhering to the Chairman/CEO dual role do not seem to have impacted negatively on firm performance, contrary to agency theory expectation.

Abstract:
This study is based on the assumption that qualitative attributes of pedestrians\' pathways have a direct impact on the accessibility levels of the site in which these paths form a network. Starting from this hypothesis, the main aim of this research was to incorporate qualitative measures in the configuration of a network of pedestrians\' pathways that form an accessibility model, in order to evaluate the impact of the proposed changes on the model outcomes. An existing GIS-based multicriteria accessibility model was taken as a reference for the proposed changes, which were tested in a case study developed at the main campus of the Federal University of Sergipe, Brazil. The study involved the following procedures: data collection; calculation of the accessibility values with the original model; insertion of qualitative attributes in the model network and calculation of the accessibility values after the changes; comparison of the results obtained with the two models; and evaluation of relative accessibility levels. Relative accessibility values were obtained from a comparison between the results found for users with mobility constraints and the results found for users without mobility constraints. The results confirmed that the qualitative measures of pedestrians pathways do affect the accessibility values, if compared to the values calculated with the model that considers only the distances between origins and destinations as impedances. Furthermore, the combination of walking speeds and spatial distribution of the key-destinations has produced low accessibility levels in the network nodes that are not close to the campus central area, even though they belong to links well classified in the quality assessment conducted for the case study. Also, the group of visually-impaired users had the worst accessibility conditions of all groups considered. This somehow contradicts the general assumption that wheelchair users constitute the group most affected by low accessibility conditions. This result is, however, a direct consequence of the flat topography of the campus. If no artificial barriers are created, the site is not, at least in principle, unfavorable to wheelchair displacements.

Devi, Bhakti L. "A framework for development and evaluation of policies and programs for urban irrigation demand management." Thesis, View thesis, 2009. http://handle.uws.edu.au:8081/1959.7/44535.

Abstract:
Water resources around the world are under increasing pressure from growing populations and the matching demand for food. Climate change is making its presence felt through trends to decreased rainfall and increased temperatures and evaporation rates, resulting in longer and more frequent spells of dry weather. Urban areas are competing more strongly with irrigated agriculture, industry and the environment for a share of the water supply. Urban water demand management has thus come into sharper focus as an integral part of any sustainable water management strategy. Urban irrigation, the watering of lawns and garden beds in the residential sector and irrigation of public open spaces like sporting grounds and parks, forms a significant component of urban water demand. Irrigation demand provides, in theory, more scope and opportunities for demand reduction and water use efficiency than indoor water demand, but in practice indoor demand has received greater levels of attention and investment from urban water service providers. This is because urban irrigation demand and its water saving potential, influenced by a complex set of climatic, biophysical, technological and behavioural factors, are relatively more difficult to analyse and predict. A random approach to the development of outdoor demand management programs, the lack of evaluation of such programs where they exist, and reliance on mandatory water restrictions for achieving reductions in demand, are symptoms of the problem. The thesis seeks to address the problem by proposing a modelling framework based around the concepts of landscape irrigation budget and water saving potential, and argues that the proposed framework provides a rational and systematic approach to development of demand management policies and programs for urban irrigation through its capacity to: (a) develop irrigation benchmarks and budgets for different urban landscape types located in different soil–climate zones; and (b) evaluate the effectiveness of demand management programs and policies. The thesis explores this proposition by applying the proposed concepts and framework to a selection of domestic gardens attached to single detached dwellings located in the local government areas of Kogarah and Penrith, representing two different soil–climate zones within the Greater Sydney Metropolitan area of New South Wales, Australia. The research methodology integrates the following: (a) a survey of domestic gardens, using aerial photographs, to characterise them with respect to their area, water use and microclimate characteristics; (b) building a conceptual biophysical model using a rational approach to estimate landscape irrigation budget for those gardens; (c) estimating irrigation budgets for gardens in the two areas; (d) water demand modelling using historical metered water consumption data (for a period when there were no water restrictions) to estimate the water saving potential of those gardens; and (e) analysis of historical metered consumption data (for a period when water restrictions were imposed) to evaluate the effectiveness of restrictions as urban irrigation demand management policy. The proposed concepts and modelling framework incorporate a well-defined and measurable indicator (landscape irrigation budget) and a monitoring and evaluation framework (water saving potential), both of which are crucial to facilitating sustainable management of any natural resource. In addition, the modelling framework developed in the thesis is simple, transparent, adaptable and flexible, the characteristics that make a decision-making model effective.

Abstract:
The study examined the relationship between the degree of involvement in co-curricular activities and academic performance, as measured by Grade Point Average (GPA) among college students enrolled at Western Kentucky University (WKU). Three hundred thirty-six sophomores were surveyed via TOPNET, an electronic registration management system, regarding their level of involvement in campus organizations and other factors, including employment status and gender. The cumulative GPAs and the number of credit hours in which the survey participants were enrolled during Fall Semester 2005 were obtained through a survey using TOPNET. Pearson product-moment correlations revealed statistically significant relationships between GPA and the number of student organizations in which they participated, officer status within student organizations, and the length of time of participation in student organization(s). The relationships were considered too weak to be of any practical significance. A statistically significant relationship was also found between number of credit hours enrolled and GPA.

Abstract:
Atmospheric features, such as tropical cyclones, act as a driving mechanism for many of the major hazards affecting coastal areas around the world. Accurate and efficient quantification of tropical cyclone surge hazard is essential to the development of resilient coastal communities, particularly given continued sea level trend concerns. Recent major tropical cyclones that have impacted the northeastern portion of the United States have resulted in devastating flooding in New York City, the most densely populated city in the US. As a part of national effort to re-evaluate coastal inundation hazards, the Federal Emergency Management Agency used the Joint Probability Method to re-evaluate surge hazard probabilities for Flood Insurance Rate Maps in the New York – New Jersey coastal areas, also termed the New York Bight. As originally developed, this method required many combinations of storm parameters to statistically characterize the local climatology for numerical model simulation. Even though high-performance computing efficiency has vastly improved in recent years, researchers have utilized different “Optimal Sampling” techniques to reduce the number of storm simulations needed in the traditional Joint Probability Method. This manuscript presents results from the simulation of over 350 synthetic tropical cyclones designed to produce significant surge in the New York Bight using the hydrodynamic Advanced Circulation numerical model, bypassing the need for Optimal Sampling schemes. This data set allowed for a careful assessment of joint probability distributions utilized for this area and the impacts of current assumptions used in deriving new flood-risk maps for the New York City area.

This paper aims at demonstrating how the UFPA Interiorization Policy is evaluated by former students of the teaching degree courses offered in the Cameta/PA Campus through their own insertion in the local teaching system, having as perspective the repercussions provided by this municipal policy. For this study we have elected as subjects former students from 1991 to 2004, Bachelors of Art in Education, History, Geography, Mathematics and Bachelors of Arts in Language Teaching. The procedures observed in the making of this study demonstrate, through the case study, the effort of an empiric task, based on the gathering of diversified sources concerning former students and the Interiorization in a Campus as singular as Cametá s. The choice of the qualitative approach and the historical-dialectical procedure helped understand the meaning of the implemented policy. To pursue the methodological path in the search of information, techniques and tools for the data gathering were elected, with the objective of best verifying the evidence found. In order to do so, we appealed to the bibliographical research, documental research, and in the field work a questionnaire was applied in a universe of 373 former students; obtaining the feedback of 113, outnumbering in 30% the intended sample. The questions in the previously mentioned instrument were deepened through interviews with other 5 former students. Having as an objective to know the history of the Cametá Campus and its repercussions in the county as well as the autonomy process we interviewed: 1 principal of the Association of the Rural Workers, the president of the Fisherman s Colony, 1 representative of the Commerce Management Association, the current and former Secretary of Education of the county, the current and former Dean of UFPA, combining into a total of 12 interviewees. This study will be structured in three moments. Initially, we discussed the Interiorization from the point of view of the relationship between the State and civil society in the scope of the public policies; for that we appealed to a theoretical analysis sustained in Antonio Gramsci, and analyzed the category of former students and university autonomy. Next, it is presented the Tocantins campus in action in the context of the local and global policy of its 21 years of history. The third moment answered to three different objectives. Initially we present a reflection on the importance of former students in the evaluation processes, based on a dialogical and participative conception. The second moment, of a predominantly empiric trait, consists in the presentation of the study results with the former students. In the last section, the opinion of the representative of the Civil Society and the Public Power about the repercussions of the UFPA interiorization policy in Cametá is stated. In the final comments a contribution to the former students personal and professional life is presented, in addition to an indication that the autonomy jeopardized the Cametá Campus, taking it closer to extinction. However, that does not stop us from stating that the interiorization of UFPA in Cametá is a public policy of social inclusion of the rural population. The innovation of the work lies in the creation of an evaluation methodology that can be developed in other Campuses and universities of the region at reduced cost for the State in its implementation. The policy was assessed as satisfactory by having produced significant changes in the education in the county
O terceiro momento respondeu a três objetivos.

Abstract:

Sustainable water management is needed to ensure quality supplies of our vital water resources in the face of growing human demand for water, high levels of pollution, and increasing spatial and temporal variability associated with climate change. An integrated approach to water management is recommended to address current water challenges, which are often interrelated with other environmental, economic and social issues. Universities and colleges have missions, resources, and contexts that could enable them to lead the process of developing and applying sustainable and integrated water resource management (IWRM). The opportunity to exemplify integrated water management has grown as institutions of higher education have made progress towards incorporating environmental sustainability into teaching, research, and campus operations. This dissertation examines the issue of campus water management at institutions of higher education through a review of campus sustainability literature, a survey of sustainability and facilities managers, and case studies of three campus water-related projects.

Findings from the review of campus sustainability literature and websites suggests water is less of a campus management priority than issues such as energy and climate change; furthermore, where water is addressed, the focus is on water conservation, while water quality management is overlooked. IWRM is not explicitly discussed in the campus sustainability literature reviewed, though principles relevant to IWRM are included in some campus sustainability declarations and programs. Results from the survey substantiate the findings from literature review that water management is less of an institutional priority than energy management and water quality management is often underemphasized in campus management. According to the survey respondents, campus water management at the institutions represented was on average just adequately managed and institutions were minimally prepared to deal with several types of future water problems. Facilities managers tended to rate their institution's water management as slightly more effective compared to sustainability coordinators. Many campuses relied on top-down, engineering based water management approaches, rather than integrated and interdisciplinary water management. Individual initiatives, municipal codes and policies, campus community sustainability awareness, and campus environmental projects served as drivers for more sustainable water management, while budget constrains were a common barrier. Logistic regression analysis of the survey data revealed that institutions featuring stream and wetland restoration projects had greater odds of being described as having a developed watershed plan and taking into consideration multidisciplinary approaches to water management.

Case studies showed that wetland creation and restoration projects can serve as effective teaching and research laboratories for institutions of higher education, but that none of the studied cases fully exemplified IWRM in their operation. Of the three cases studied, the Stream and Wetland Assessment Management Park project at Duke University most closely demonstrated a campus project designed and developed to address water problems in the campus watershed, while also offering an effective outdoor teaching and research laboratory for hundreds of students, professionals, and researchers. The Olentangy River Wetland Research Park case at Ohio State University exemplified the potential for wetland creation and restoration projects to serve as a facility for educating thousands of students and visitors, training dozens of water experts, and influencing wetland and water resource management beyond the campus. The Radford University Stormwater Treatment Wetland Project case illustrated the potential for institutions with limited space and resources to establish effective outdoor teaching laboratories using environmental features already present or in development on campus.

Findings from the review, survey and case studies all point toward the need and opportunity for institutions of higher education to make greater efforts at implementing and promoting sustainable and integrated water resource management. Literature review and survey findings reveal that water is frequently overlooked as environmental resource at universities and colleges, while other environmental issues such as energy, climate change and recycling are prioritized in sustainability plans and efforts. Universities and colleges have made progress addressing water conservation, while water quality and stormwater need further attention and an integrated approach for more effective management.

In recent years, conception of sustainable development and contemplation of environmental ethics have brought up notice of ecological and educational issues of campus planning. Fostering ecological campus, green school, and sustainable campus has become the significant policy and task. Because of measuring executing results of plans and projects related to sustainable development in campus surroundings. Constructing the indicators of evaluating condition and quality of environmental ecology becomes prioritizing consideration. Otherwise, due to the boom of domestic higher education, the scale of university campus has increased growing into vital landscape resources of urban environment and essential pieces of developing biodiversity in urban area. Consequently, if the ideas of ecological planning could exactly execute and reflect on university campus, there will come out certain benefits to maintain the stability of the whole urban ecosystem. Therefore, the research targets campus environment of the university. After researching potentialities and limitations of composing environment of Biodiversity, these data can assist to build the ecological evaluation Indicator system so that the research has the basement to do an empirical Study. By using workflow of constructing index and relative research method, the research builds an evaluation indicator system, consisting of three layers. The target layer is “Improving ecological servicing function of nature environment of university campus”. The first layer includes “reservation of the environment resources“, “protection of the ecological basement“, “construction of the ecological network“, and “maintaining harmony of the surroundings“. The second layer includes “water retention capacity“, “plant species diversity “, “area “, “land use pattern of surroundings “, and so forth. (Totally 20 items) According to evaluating results of the empirical study, the level of achievement on four aspects in Tunghai University in order are “reservation of the environment resources“, “protection of the ecological basement“, “construction of the ecological network“, and “maintaining harmony of the surroundings“. In addition, reflecting each comprehensive weighted level of achievement on the target, the level of achievement approaches to 70%. The result explains that Tunghai University makes some influences on improving and sustaining quality of service in ecosystem. The result also points out potentialities and limitations on constructing environment wit biodiversity of the study site. Aspects of potentiality are: (1) having functions of becoming habitats, source and sink. (2) the significant part of constructing urban ecological network. Aspects of limitation and improvement are: (1) vegetation lacks technique of ecologicl green construction. (2) lack of hydrological habitats. (3) emergency of developing artificial facilities. (4) land use of adjacent surroundings is mainly residential areas and industrial zones, in addition, completed area of development is gradually expanding. By operating empirical study and discussing related results from evaluations, the research can further confirm possibility of the indicator system. The result of research indicates the main points of improving are: (1) reducing the difficulty of writing questionnaires and rate of abandoned questionnaires. (2) avoiding subjective judgments of dividing evaluation criteria and evaluating method. Moreover, suggestions are: (1) integrating indices, such as educational, humanistic, social, and economic aspects, to strength completeness and preciseness of indices. (2) enlarging application of ANP to campus’s decision making related to projects of construction.
