Abstract:
Background: Guidelines and audit have been widely adopted as quality improvement strategies in healthcare. A recent stroke guideline states that 45 minutes of each relevant therapy, 5 days per week, should be provided to patients deemed appropriate. National audit data suggest variation across teams in the proportion of patients deemed appropriate, and the quantity and frequency of therapy provided. Reasons for these variations are unknown. Aim: To investigate the ways in which policy, professional judgement and patient need influence the delivery of therapies in stroke units (SUs) in the era of the 45 minute guideline. Method: An ethnographic study, including participant observation and interviews, was conducted in three SUs. Results: Drawing on theoretical concepts of audit society and street level bureaucracy, the study found that the 45 minute guideline was limited in its ability to influence delivery of therapies. The attempt to standardise therapy time was undermined by variation in the roles and remits of SUs and therapists, and varied understandings of ‘what counts’ as therapy. Thus they had different approaches to assessing therapy needs, and adopted different audit reporting practices. In line with the claims of street level bureaucracy, therapists developed routines of practice to simplify and manage their caseloads. In one example, the audit had become a way of categorising patients’ need for therapy and justifying resource allocation. The thesis identifies the role of ‘Street Level Leaders’ in guiding therapists’ attitudes and practices. The thesis provides empirical data to support the theoretical concept of audit society, showing how changes to therapy standards and practice took place in a wider economic and social context. Conclusions: The 45 minute guideline was one of many factors influencing delivery of therapy and was diversely interpreted and implemented. The study’s findings suggest that, in the context of the quasi-marketisation of healthcare, audit may become a tool of commissioner-centred, rather than patient-centred care. Ongoing engagement between strategic leaders, patients and clinicians is needed, to ensure that quality of care does not become secondary to ‘playing the numbers game’.

Nunez, Castaneda José, and Grozo Silvana Chang. "Facial reconstruction according to aesthetic units." Wolters Kluwer Medknow Publications, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10757/655509.

Full text
Abstract:
Context: The facial subunit principle organizes the facial skin into subunits. Facial reconstruction for skin cancer based on aesthetic units consists of replacing the entire subunit when a large part of a subunit has been removed. Aims: To determine the prevalence of facial skin cancer, their location by facial aesthetic units, and the type of facial reconstruction used in each of them. Settings and Design: An observational cross-sectional study was conducted at the Head and Neck Surgery Service of a general hospital between 2017 and 2018. Materials and Methods: A population census was conducted during this period. Statistical Analysis Used: The categorical variables were expressed as frequencies (percentages). Continuous variables were described as the means and standard deviations or medians and interquartile ranges. Results: The most common skin cancer was basal cell skin cancer, followed by epithelial skin cancer and, at last, melanoma. In general, the most frequent localization of these cancers was the nose. Conclusions: In spite of primary closure being the most common form of reconstruction, a considerable number of patients required facial reconstruction based on aesthetic facial units, with satisfying results.

Adolfsson, Tobias, and Axel Dellenby. "Pre-study of optical LED units for shunting signals." Thesis, KTH, Hälsoinformatik och logistik, 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-296561.

Full text
Abstract:
Alstom wanted to investigate the possibility of adapting its light emitting diode (LED) technology for shunting signals in train traffic. The LED technology uses 50V, but Alstom wants to adapt it for 12V. The LED technology is energy efficient but needs to be adapted for existing signal interlocking by drawing a higher current. This meant that the possibility of reactive power compensation was investigated to obtain lower thermal dissipation in dwarf signal. The essay presents a couple of possible solutions. One of the solutions is to raise the voltage by using a booster converter to use the existing 50V LED unit. Capacitors were reviewed to be used in reactive power compensation to increase current supply. One of the solutions then became a capacitor bank. Simulations indicated that a booster converter and a capacitor bank can be used to adapt the circuit. However, some modifications must be made.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to explore the practices, perceptions, and operations of agricultural crime units. To date, there has been little research conducted on policing agricultural crimes and no known research on units specializing in investigating them. The study utilizes data gathered from qualitative interviews with agricultural crime investigators across several states to fill this gap in the literature. The results allow for an examination of the fundamental practices of agricultural units, their perceptions and their experiences. In addition, they point to several implications for both policy and practice that may serve to guide our efforts to combat the problem.

Zhang, Xiaoyue. "Fall Risk Assessment By Measuring Determinants Of Gait." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/24535.

Full text
Abstract:
Fall accidents are one of the most serious problems leading to unintentional injuries and fatalities among older adults. However, it is difficult to assess individuals' fall risk and to determine who are at risk of falls and in need of fall interventions. Therefore, this study was motivated by a need to provide a cogent fall risk assessment strategy that may be conducive to various wireless platforms. It aimed at developing a fall risk assessment method for evaluating individuals' fall risk by providing diagnostic modalities associated with gait. In this study, a "determinants of gait" model was adopted to analyze gait characteristics and associate them with fall risk. As a proof of concept, this study concentrated on slip-induced falls and the slip initiation risks. Two important parameters of determinants of gait, i.e. the pelvic rotation and the knee flexion, were found to be associated with slip initiation severity. This relationship appeared to be capable of differentiating fallers and non-fallers within older adults, as well as differentiating normal walking conditions and constrained walking conditions. Furthermore, this study also leveraged portable wireless sensor techniques and investigated if miniature inertial measurement units could effectively measure the important parameters of determinants of gait, and therefore assess slip and fall risk. Results in this study suggested that pelvic rotation and knee flexion measured by the inertial measurement units can be used as a substitution of the traditional motion capture system and can assess slip and fall risk with fairly good accuracy. As a summary, findings of this study filled the knowledge gap about how critical gait characteristics can influence slip and fall risk, and demonstrated a new solution to assess slip and fall risk with low cost and high efficiency.

Zhang, Lei. "A study of functional units for information use of scholarly journal articles." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/34015.

Full text
Abstract:
This research aims to enhance reading effectiveness and efficiency by presenting the readers with the text in the article that is most relevant to a particular information task, rather than presenting the article in its entirety. It applies the idea of the functional unit, the smallest information unit with a distinct function within four major components of scholarly journal articles — Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion. First, through a review and analysis of the literature and validation through user surveys, 41 functional units within the four components were identified. Also identified were the relationships between the individual functional units and five information use tasks, and furthermore the relationships among a set of functional units for a particular task. The functional units were classified into three categories (primary, related, additional related) according to how useful they were for each task. Based on this taxonomy, a prototype journal reading system was designed and implemented. Thirty 3rd and 4th year psychology students participated in an experimental study using the prototype system. Content analysis was used to analyze qualitative data collected from retrospective interviews, questionnaire open-ended questions, and screen recordings. A statistical analysis of quantitative data collected via rating scales, logging of time and highlights was also carried out. The answers to comprehension questions were assessed first by content analysis and then by statistical analysis. Participants using the prototype system were significantly more satisfied with the information obtained, highlighted more relevant text, and answered more fully the comprehension questions. The use of functional units was effective in enabling people to focus on specific information and use pieces of relevant information across the article, but not necessarily to move from more relevant to less relevant information. Participants using the prototype system also felt significantly more efficient in obtaining the information. The use of functional units was efficient in enabling people to read less or read selectively. The signaling of functional units seemed to be more effective and efficient for the tasks requiring use of information scattered across articles. This research suggests that information within an article can be organized and presented to benefit readers’ information use.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to analyze price variations across the city of Tucson to determine whether any systematic patterns of noncompetitive pricing existed and to explore their causes. Prices were examined for three alternative baskets which consisted of (1) national brand items; (2) house brand items; and (3) the cheapest brand items. Also, several characteristics pertaining to firm size, competition level, and neighborhood demographics were examined to determine their effects on the price of the national brand basket. And finally, average weekly prices were examined to determine the effect of the week on the prices of the three alternative baskets. Ordinary least squares regression equations showed that only those variables related to the competition level were significant in influencing the price of the basket. In addition it was found that price differences were brand specific. That is, BRAND1 prices were found to be higher on the south side of town, whereas BRAND3 prices were highest on the north side of town. Similar results were found when looking at the number of close rivals, stores within the same chain, and the week of the month.

Thon, Jonathan Noah. "Application of proteomics to the study of protein translation in stored platelet units." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/2346.

Full text
Abstract:
Platelet products have a short shelf life (5 to 7 days) owing in part to the deterioration of the quality of platelets stored at 22°C. This creates significant inventory challenges, and blood banks may suffer shortages and high wastage as a result. Proteomics offers a global quantitative approach to investigate changes occurring in stored blood products. These data sets can identify processes leading to storage-associated losses of blood component quality such as the platelet storage lesion (PSL). Changes to the platelet proteome between days 1 and 7 of storage were analysed with 3 complementary proteomic approaches with final mass spectrometric (MS) analysis: 2-dimensional (2D) gel electrophoresis/differential gel electrophoresis (DIGE), isobaric tagging for relative and absolute quantification (iTRAQ), and isotope-coded affinity tagging (ICAT). Although proteomics analyses identified many storage-associated protein changes, these varied significantly by method suggesting that a combination of protein-centric (2D gel or DIGE) and peptide-centric (iTRAQ or ICAT) approaches is necessary to acquire the most informative data. Validation of the proteomics results by western blotting, flow cytometry, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT PCR) and ³ٰ⁵S-methionine incorporation confirmed that platelets are capable of synthesising biologically relevant proteins ex vivo throughout a 10-day storage period with particularly long-lived mRNA (half-life of approximately 2.4 days), and has provided the first evidence for one of the mechanisms of the PSL. The development of an ³ٰ⁵Smethionine assay has since shown that stored human blood platelets incorporate ³ٰ⁵S-methionine at a rate that is proportional to time and substrate concentration, and is slower for freshly drawn platelets than those stored in pooled buffy coat derived units for 10 days. More interesting still are the observations that the overall ³ٰ⁵S-methionine incorporation rate was higher in pooled buffy coat platelet units versus freshly drawn platelets, that this rate increased upon agonist exposure in both, and that day 8 platelets showed significantly greater total protein translation than on days 2,3,7 and 10 of storage. This may be indicative of translational regulation of the platelet proteome during storage and upon activation. Translational control is a consequence of remarkable cellular specialisation and precise biochemical pathways which, in the case of platelets, may lead to storage-associated losses of blood component quality and must be understood if platelet storage times are to be extended.

Grant, Lyle George. "The impact of smoke-free policies on inpatient psychiatric units : an ethnographic study." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/44018.

Full text
Abstract:
Smoke-free grounds policies (SFGPs) were introduced in acute psychiatric hospital settings to help improve health among patients, staff, and visitors. However, enacting these policies has been challenging. Recognizing that cultural norms around tobacco use may influence policy enactment, a qualitative ethnographic study was undertaken in Northern British Columbia, Canada to improve understandings about how SFGPs are affected by institutional cultures. Data included participant observation, document analysis, informal fieldwork discussions (n=11), and interviews with patients (n=20), healthcare professionals (n=19), and key informants (n=2) at two hospitals. Data were analyzed using iterative processes to inductively derive thematic findings and develop cultural understandings. Cultural factors supported some healthcare professionals in subverting and resisting the SFGP while advocating and caring for patients. Strong consultative leadership, including input and participation by those most directly responsible for policy implementation, offered the strongest indication that policy-maker intent could be implemented. This study highlights the actions taken and challenges faced by those implementing SFGPs in inpatient psychiatric settings. Consistency in implementing the SFGP across the organization was a significant challenge, influenced by local context, the nature of the policy, resource availability, and healthcare professional discretion under the policy. Patients responded to the SFGP in a variety of ways, but ultimately remained resigned to smoking and believed hospitals had a duty to accommodate them and their smoking. The centrality of smoking was rooted in personal beliefs sustained by both healthcare professionals and patients, and enforced through group norms. The study offers new evidence about the importance of local and cultural contexts to SFGP implementation and reports for the first time how rurality may influence SFGP implementation in psychiatric settings in Canada. Local contexts and cultural factors can be conceptualized in a socio-ecological model of intra-personal, inter-personal, institutional factors, and community/environment spheres of influence, to structure inquiry and analysis of SFGP implementation. It is suggested that policy-makers avoid oversimplified macro-level approaches to SFGP development and implementation in favour of more localized, simultaneous, top-down, bottom-up approaches, with accompanying support for those most directly involved in implementation efforts to improve policy fidelity and any needed shift of cultural norms.

Full text
Abstract:
Introduction: Producing on a global scale is attractive for multinational corporations (MNCs) due to production cost savings and the proximity as well as simplified access to new high growth markets. In order to be successful in foreign markets it is vital for MNCs to understand the local market conditions. In particular stakeholders, also referred to institutions, and their diverse demands are likely to vary among differently industrialized country markets. Additionally, sustainability has emerged as an inevitable topic for businesses and countries alike. Purpose: Therefore, the purpose of this thesis is to describe and analyze different institutions and their demands in differently industrialized countries. Moreover, the aim is to describe and analyze capabilities that manufacturing companies can use to respond to these institutional demands in order to achieve a more sustainable production. Methodology: The research method employed is a single embedded case study consisting of one Scandinavian multinational machinery and construction equipment manufacturer with three production units located in Sweden, Bulgaria and China. Semi-structured interviews with managers, a supplementary questionnaire and a literature review on institutional and capability theory serve as sources for primary and secondary data collection. Findings: There are differences between institutional demands among differently industrialized countries. The research found that manufacturing units in developed and ECMs can respond to these institutional demands through different capabilities. Next to institutional demands there are certain institutional influences that are beyond the control of the MNC and can only be absorbed. By having a diverse set of economic-, natural- and social capabilities which are difficult to copy and that are corresponding to various institutional efficiency and legitimacy demands as well as influences manufacturing companies can create a more sustainable business. Research and practical implications: Future qualitative research could seek to explore whether the results of this study are congruent for companies operating in other industries and other countries. Next, future research could seek to explore whether there are more evident natural and social based capabilities existing in the field.Within praxis, it is critical for managers to be aware that each country has its distinctive context and that it is necessary to locally adapt in order to satisfy the prevailing market conditions. Besides it is essential not only to satisfy the customer demands but also to identify and respond to other institutional demands to create a more sustainable production. Keywords: Capabilities, institutions, efficiency and legitimacy demands as well as influences, differently industrialized country markets, sustainability, economic-, social- and natural value, imitability, manufacturing, MNC, global sustainable production

Benedetti, Paolo. "A multicentre study on antibiotic resistance in North-East Italian intensive care units." Thesis, Queen Mary, University of London, 2011. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.568962.

Full text
Abstract:
BACKGROUND. Intensive care units (ICUs) are "hot" areas for antibiotic consumption, infection and antibiotic resistance. Resistance affects patient outcomes, resource utilization and determines whether treatments are adequate. Within Europe, Italy has among the highest rates of antibiotic consumption but resistances - particularly in ICUs - are largely unexplored, both nationally and regionally. OBJECTIVES. To assess variation in antibiotic prescribing, consumption, resistance, and treatment outcomes and to identify critical points for improvement in antimicrobial practice across 5 ICUs in the Veneto region, North-east Italy. RESULTS. From 2002 to 2010, 911 patients were reviewed. Median K'U stay (17 days; IQR, 8-29) and ICU mortality (mean, 24.9%) were similar across sites. Empirical antibiotics were given to 853 patients (83.1%), with penicillin/β-lactamase inhibitor combinations (26%), cephalosporins (20.7%), fluoroquinolones (10.9%), and carbapenems (9.8%) frequently used. Laboratory investigation was often long delayed (median 7 days IQR = 3-14) after treatment initiation, and there were few (37.2%) microbiological-based shifts; 30.9% of empirical regimens were inadequate. Treatment inadequacy (AOR=13.99) and septic shock (AOR=3.29) were the main independent predictors for hospital mortality. Amongst 1908 isolates tested - predominantly, Pseudomonas aeruginosa (22%) and MRSA (14.8%) - 53.7% were multiresistant, with significant inter-hospital differences in resistance rates of Enterobacteriaceae to fluoroquinolones, and for P. aeruginosa to fluoroquinolones and carbapenems) (p < 0.001). The relationship between resistance and use of fluoroquinolones and 3rd_ generation cephalosporins was clear for Enterobacteriaceae (p < 0.001), but weaker for P. aeruginosa. The susceptibility of Escherichia coli to fluoroquinolones decreased over time (X2 = 0.009). Antibiotic use was inflated, especially at one ICU with excess of fluoroquinolone (94.4 DDD/100 bed-days vs. 26.1-35.9 elsewhere) use. CONCLUSIONS. Considerable inter-hospital variation III prescribing affected antibiotic consumption and resistance prevalence. Poor and delayed use of laboratory microbiology was prominent, as was the uncontrolled use of antibiotics. Urgent interventions are needed and improvement strategies are discussed.

Abstract:
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited.
Why is it that some military organizations succeed and others do not? What characteristics elude unsuccessful fighting groups that successful ones are able to capture and translate into positive outcomes? The study of organizational theory and design spans the multiple typologies of organizational functions and forms. However, at the foundation of all groups are the individuals and the interaction of those individuals within the organization. Given this, the concept of unit cohesion can provide some insight in the search for discovering what makes organizations successful. Why study unit cohesion within Naval Special Warfare (NSW) operational units? The simple answer is because cohesion can increase performance and effectiveness. Prior to the last century, the concept of unit cohesion was based on the anecdotal observations of military commanders and historians. The rise of the fields of psychology and sociology led to an increase in the study and understanding of unit cohesion. This study utilizes survey research to investigate specific factors related to unit cohesion in NSW operational units and how they are related to current issues in the community. Ultimately, the impacts of these relationships provide a basis for recommendations intended to improve cohesion in, and overall effectiveness of NSW operational units.

The research studies children's syntactic and textual transformations in the latter stages of primary school. Previous research has established that children transform their writing in response to participation in ever-changing communication contents and in the school context, in response to reading and writing texts which represent the world relatively abstractly. While much is understood across disciplines about the broad differences between children's and adult's writing, little is understood about the linguistic and conceptual evolution of the 'synoptic' mode in children's writing and their 'interests' in representing knowledge and experience from this perspective.

Abstract:
The Framework for K-12 Science Education, the foundation for the Next Generation Science Standards, identifies scientific explanation as one of the eight practices "essential for learning science." In order to design professional development to help teachers implement these new standards, we need to assess students' current skill level in explanation construction, characterize current teacher practice surrounding it, and identify best practices for supporting students in explanation construction. This multiple-case study investigated teacher practice in eight high school science inquiry units in the Portland metro area and the scientific explanations the students produced in their work samples. Teacher Instructional Portfolios (TIPs) were analyzed with a TIP rubric based on best practices in teaching science inquiry and a qualitative coding scheme. Written scientific explanations were analyzed with an explanation rubric and qualitative codes. Relationships between instructional practices and explanation quality were examined. The study found that students struggle to produce high quality explanations. They have the most difficulty including adequate reasoning with science content. Also, teachers need to be familiar with the components of explanation and use a variety of pedagogical techniques to support students' explanation construction. Finally, the topic of the science inquiry activity should be strongly connected to the content in the unit, and students need a firm grasp of the scientific theory or model on which their research questions are based to adequately explain their inquiry results.

Full text
Abstract:
Membrane distillation was considered as an alternative to traditional desalination processes because this technique produces ultra-pure water without requiring high temperatures nor high pressures.
The driving force of membrane distillation is a temperature difference across a microporous membrane leading to a vapour pressure gradient. Hydrophobic membranes are used for membrane distillation in order to permit the passage of vapours through the pores while preventing the liquid phase from passing.
The thickness of the membrane is a key variable which affects heat and mass transfers between the warm feed side and cooling side. In this thesis, a module with thin-walled hollow fibres was compared to a module with thicker tubular membranes. The permeate flux produced was compared at different operating conditions. Feed and cooling water flow rates and temperatures were varied. The impact of salt concentration in the feed was also examined.
Different models based on first principles were developed and compared to a semi-empirical model based on the experimental determination of the mass transfer coefficient. Their predictions were compared with experimentally obtained permeate fluxes.

Full text
Abstract:
Background. The research on management in Swedish home care has been conductedmainly from sociological perspectives where structural conditions have been of interest (see for example Hagerman et al., 2013; Andersson, 2014; Österlind, 2013). The conditions impacting on management are described as differing ideals where the main ideals are the care perspective and the cost perspective (see for example Andersson, 2014; Österlind, 2013). The conflict between ideals create tensions between ideology and practice and different expectations (Antonsson, 2013) and may also create problems, dilemmas and paradoxes (Österlind, 2013). The rules impacting on the home care activities are bureaucratic rules stemming from the state and municipality. However, Trydegård (2000) argues that at the same time there is room for autonomy and path-dependence in the home care units. Purpose and research approach. There seems to be a lack of studies on management control in home care, and more especially no study combining a discourse, structures and theories on management control. The purpose of this thesis is to explore management control in home care in the relation between structures and managers’ interpretative repertoires in a social-constructionist perspective. The purpose is also to create a prototype model for further research. The ontological positioning and theoretical framework are building on Giddens’ structuration theory (1979, 1984) in which structures are seen as both the medium and outcome of social interaction and rules are important. The units of analysis are the managers’ accounts on management control in semi-structured interviews. The accounts are analysed in a so called case cluster analysis (McClintock et al., 1979) in the software program NVivo. The codes are building on Ouchi’s theory of management control (1979) as ‘input control’, ‘behaviour control’, ‘output control’ and ‘clan control’, and also building on Giddens’ structuration theory (1978, 1984) defined as 8 characteristics of rules, ‘normative sanctions’, ‘signification of meaning’, ‘authoritative’ or ‘allocative resources’. Findings. The findings reveal that home care is highly bureaucratic in input and output control by the use of formal rules stemming from municipality or state. In behaviour control home care has a medium-low degree of bureaucracy if exercised through ‘signification of meaning’ and medium-high when exercised through ‘authoritative resources’. In clan control home care has a low degree of bureaucracy and can either be positive or negative depending on how informal leaders in the unit impact on cooperation between care personnel and if there is trust and a good communication between manager and care personnel. Two main patterns of structuration appear: creation of structures for an efficient process flow of home care to increase efficiency, and co-creation of new rules for behaviour to increase cooperation. Managers focus on different situations of management control depending on conditions in the home care unit and own interpretations. Two interpretative repertoires are identified; the discourse on hard matters is created in relation to matters that are more rigid in structure, such as legislation and municipal goals and that are difficult to interpret differently, whereas soft matters are created in discourse around dilemmas and human or relational aspects of control.

Cannon, Pamela Lynne. "An exploratory study of students’ representations of units and unit relationships in four mathematical contexts." Thesis, 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/3235.

Full text
Abstract:
This study explores characteristics of students’ repertoires of representations in two mathematical contexts: whole number multiplication and the comparison of common fractions. A repertoire of representations refers to a set of representations which a student can reconstruct as needed. Of particular interest are (1) how multiplicative relationships among units were represented, and (2) whether continuous measurement was an underlying conceptual framework for their representations. In addition, the characteristics of students’ representations and interpretation of units of linear and area measurement were explored. Data were collected through a series of interviews with Grade 5 and Grade 7 students. Some results of the study were as follows. Each repertoire of representations was exemplified by a dominant form of units, either discrete or contiguous. Within a repertoire, all forms of units were related, first through a common system of measurement (either numerosity or area), and second through their two-dimensional characteristic. In the multiplication context, some repertoires were comprised only of representations with discrete units, but others also included some representations with contiguous units. Students sought characteristics in their representations which reflected those based on continuous measurement, however linear or area measurement was not used as a conceptual framework. Instead, all representations were based on the measurement of numerosity. Also, students exhibited different limits in their representation of multiplicative relationships among units. Some represented no multiplicative relationships, but most represented at least a multiplicative relationship between two units. Relationships among three units were seldom constructed and difficult to achieve. Common fraction repertoires were based on the measurement of either numerosity or area, but the physical characteristics of the units varied. Some repertoires had only contiguous representations of units, others also included representations with discrete units, and a few did not represent fractional units at all. Students’ representations reflected characteristics of area-based representations, however area measurement was not necessarily a conceptual framework. In addition, students’ beliefs about what constituted units of area measurement were variable. As a result, they either represented no multiplicative relationships among units, or fluctuated between representing two-unit and three-unit relationships. Linear measurement was notably absent as a basis for representations in both mathematical contexts. The one-dimensional characteristic of linear measurement did not fit students’ dominant framework for constructing mathematical representations. With respect to measurement, students represented linear units in terms of discrete points or line segments. Counting points and interpreting the count in terms of the numerosity of line segments was problematic for nearly all students. When partitioning regions into units of area, a few students also equated the number of lines with the number of parts. The direct relationship of action and result in counting discrete objects was generalized without consideration of other geometric characteristics. When comparing quantities having linear or area units, numerical reasoning was not always used. Alternatively, either quantities were transformed to facilitate a direct comparison, or only perceptual judgements were made. No students consistently used numerical reasoning to compare fractional units of area. In the latter situations, the part-whole relationship among units seldom was observed. In general, there was no direct relationship between the forms of representations used by students in the two mathematical contexts and the characteristics of their representations of units of the measurement contexts. The development of repertoires of representations appears to be context specific. The repertoires were strictly limited in terms of the forms of representations of which they were comprised.

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has already launched ISO 26262 for automotive electronic/electrical systems which is a standard for functional safety. To help domestic manufacturers integrate smoothly their electric vehicles and components with global market, Part 5 of ISO 26262 namely ‘Product Development: Hardware Level’ is studied in detail in this thesis. 50-kW motor control unit (MCU) made in a domestic research institute is taken as an example to demonstrate how ISO 26262 can be implemented. Special attention is paid to DFMEA (Design Failure Mode and Effect Analysis) and failure rate estimation of the MCU and its components to examine whether they meet requirements of ISO 26262. To obtain meaningful failure rates, MIL-HDBK-217F N2 and FIDES 2009 are referred to, in which Fides is a DGA (French armament industry supervision agency) study conducted by a European consortium formed by eight industrialists including AIRBUS France, Eurocopter, Nexter Electronics, etc. from the fields of aeronautics and defense. The mean time between failure (MTBF) of each component and system is predicted as well. Comparison is made between results obtained from the two methods. With regard to DFMEA, an improved version of DFMEA resulting table is provided over the original one provided by the institute who made the MCU. The occurrence rate or occurrence frequency for each component is estimated and tabulated in the table. Risk indicators and their relative rakings for all components are found. Both of them are considered important issues in ISO 26262. The results showed that the MTBF of MCU, MIL-HDBK-217F N2 evaluates 11~57 years, FIDES calculations about 21 years; and according to DFMEA, the higher order RPN of component of MCU are Al capacitors, DSP and IGBT etc.

With information changing rapidly in the world and a short life cycle for products, the replacement rate of employee’s knowledge and skills is rising. The competition between companies becomes more fierce. Therefore, companies without proper capability or consistence of learning and growing will gradually eliminated. In 2005, Employment and Vocational Training Board promoted training quality and international standards in order to promote TTQs assessment training standards system, which is an evaluation and a management tool. Not only can it improve the training process of Taiwan, but also enhance the professional ability and quality of training systems. This study will examine the impact of TTQs which effect the motivation, assistance and satisfaction of government. Besides, it can derive differences from distinct regions and help government put effective and revelant training systems into practice and improve the satisfaction of results. In this paper, the case study is conducted to explore issues, for example the relevant factors of teaching the training unit each and every time. Motives, process, effectiveness and solutions of problems are considered to be references for different scales of industries as TTQs are used. The results of this study are the following: 1.Large-scale enterprises promoting the ISO system have more basic and enough assistant training resources when they use TTQs than those who are smaller or medium-scale. Therefore, small or medium-scale businesses more appropriate resources proved by the government. 2.If the training unit has the concept of quality or the basis of certification, it will help the use of TTQs and reduce the difficulties of usage problems. 3.Government has a positive attitude about TTQs, but the implementation of proposed norms is required to be modified before it can meet the demand. 4.Because no-profitable making organizations (training institutions) are the derivation of the VTC training program. They must take TTQs as an assessment system, which is one of the governmental motivations. However, the manufacturing industry pays less emphasis on VTC training program, which means that they are not the main cause of the governmental motivations. 5.That the effectiveness of training is tie to the organization’s performance is still open to question. But it certainly must have an impact. TTQs pay emphasis on results-oriented presentation and continued follow-up, however, the training institution and enterprises generally carry them out in different ways. The definition is clear, but technically, practical operations are dependent upon each company.

Abstract Today knowledge has become a significant capital of all kinds of organizations. The enhancement of the organizational knowledge power will bring the improvement of economic power directly and advance its competition status among all the competitors. That’s the reason for the effective knowledge management becomes the important key of the maintenance of competitive superiority. The knowledge management means the management of interior organization knowledge and the collection of the knowledge from individuals, divisions, and branches. The knowledge management not only a collective database for all the public and private workers, but also an renew depot for all the info resources. So the knowledge management is the science and technology for the passage of the knowledge workers, the interactive business cultures, the performance flows, and the win-win policy for all the personnel and enterprises. The new century ROC forces need to apply knowledge properly to create the advantage requirements of the forces establishment and readiness. Simply speaking, the high quality transform of ROC forces demand highlight and drive the knowledge management because of the necessity of constructing the “high quality, modern, and profession” defense troops. The defense organization is a complex enterprise entity which has been accumulating knowledge resources for years. One thing we have to consider actively is how to improve the management scheme in order to use the information technology rightly for the enhancement of subordinate values around all the knowledge resources. Making a comprehensive survey of our defense organization, it is hardly to find the divisions which are able to apply the knowledge economically and effectively. The reason for this phenomenon is the lack of a general and easy way for the application. So this research tried to find a modern military unit with the consolidation of high-tech and complex info equipments to be the research entity, use the deliberation of the defense e-society model to be the main shaft of the knowledge management. This research makes a complete introduction of the knowledge management firstly, studies the military application and exercise of the knowledge management secondly. The purposes of this arrangement are getting the better understanding of knowledge for ROC forces and inspiring the spotlight of knowledge management, in order to deal with the challenge of knowledge explosion as early as possible. Furthermore, this research also anticipates the achievement of the military progress for all the organization, personnel, and systems with the advocacy of knowledge management. The final goal is that ROC forces can be the troops with the high quality based on the accumulation and management of knowledge and the continuous learning and innovation in order to operate and sustain forever.

In this thesis, we study on optimum units of diffractive/refractive hybrid lens and ,based on the results, design a 10X zoom lens which can be used in camera system. The diffractive lens is characteristic of thinness, lightness and cost effective. The diffractive lens has the same imaging function as refractive lens. The hybrid lens which consists of diffractive element and refractive element can eliminate more aberrations, and will not increase the volume and weight. We simulate and analysis the singlet and doublet of hybrid lenses. From the simulated results, we find optimum units of the hybrid lenses. Finally, based on the optimum units, we design a 10X zoom lens.

Nosocomial candidal infection has increased significantly recently. The emergence of fungi, particularly candida species, is likely to be the result of changes in neonatal intensive care environment and their interaction with the host. In this study, we focused the topic of candidemia in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). We not only analyzed clinical data but also applied the molecular typing methods to the epidemiology of candidal infection in NICU.Between January 1994 and July 1997, fifty episodes of candidemia in 47 infants occurring in NICUs of Chang Gung Children''s Hospital were identified. Two outbreaks of candidemia caused by C. parapsilosis involving 17 infants and caused by C. albicans involving 9 infants, respectively, occurred in the NICUs during 1994 and 1995 and were investigated. The results showed that the outbreak of C. albicans fungemia was caused by a particular strain, while the outbreak of C. parapsilosis was caused by three main genotypes. The route of transmission in both outbreaks was possibly via cross-infection by the hands of health care workers. Further study regarding yeast carriage on hands of personnel working in ICUs showed that yeast carriage in these personnel was common, but these yeast strains were usually not acquired from a common source. The study regarding fungal colonization in very low birth weight infants indicated that fungal colonization in these infants was not uncommon and represented a risk factor for fungemia but factors other than prior colonization may contribute to invasive candidiasis. In conclusion, we predict that candidemia will be increasing in the near future in NICU. Although fungal colonization is risk factor for subsequent fungemia, other factors, particularly yeast carriage on hands of personnel working in ICU, may contribute to invasive candidiasis. In comparison of both genotyping methods used in this study, electrophoretic karyotype is more discriminative than PCR amplification and direct sequencing of ITs gene.

In this thesis, the application of light weight, high strength, anti-corrosion, weather resistant and heat insulation Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastic (GFRP) composite members to “Green Vegetation Units” to replace similar green facades made of metal materials is presented. Experiment was conducted on the bio-compatibility and mechanical behavior of the FRP components. In the bio-compatibility experiments, 2 species of vines - Pyrostegia venusta and Ficus pumila – were supported by 2 kinds of GFRP rods (threaded and smooth rods). Both kinds of the GFRP rods were then divided into three groups depending on the coating applied (i.e. epoxy coating, paint coating or no coating). For each of the 2 species of vines, 3 plant pots were allocated making it a total of 36 specimens in the experiment. The mechanical testing of the GFRP components include the three-point bending experiment; 3 specimens in the chemical bonding experiment and 3 specimens in the physical bonding experiment respectively; and the tensile strength experiment of 15 Glass fiber bundle specimens. From the results of the experiments discussed above, an “GFRP vegetation window frame” for vines to climb on was designed using the GFRP components. Finally, in order to investigate the carbon footprint and carbon reduction benefits of the “GFRP vegetation window frame”, carbon footprint comparison was made with that of a similar stainless steel (SUS304) frame and aluminum (6063-T5) before discussing the overall carbon footprint reduction benefits of the “GFRP vegetation window frame”. This study focuses on the superiority of GFRP materials over metal materials in making “Green Vegetation Units” in order to overcome the disadvantages of similar existing Green facades expected to be useful on urban buildings in Taiwan.

In the closing stage of the Pacific War, depleted crews and fuels forced the Japanese army to continue the war by Special Attack Units (suicide attacks) so many young soldiers served their country with flesh and blood. Given to such a historical background, Japanese Special Attack Units Shinyo were developed. This study centers on the development of Special Attack Units Shinyo in Taiwan and extends the discussion on historical literature in Japan and other Asian regions. The research scope could be divided into two perspectives: time and space. In chronological order, the development of Special Attack Units Shinyo could be categorized into four periods: inception, growth, maturity and discontinuance. In research regions, Taiwan and the Penghu archipelago are the focus, related contents of which are supplemented by materials from Japan, Hong Kong, the Philippines and Okinawa. On the other hand, referencing pictures and written records collected by institutes like Japan Center for Asian Historical Records, this study uses analysis and comparison to discuss the organization, strategic training, base facilities and deployment, and building craftsmanship of Special Attack Units Shinyo to achieve a unique position of Special Attack Units Shinyo in the histories of the Pacific War and military engineering. Lastly, this study verifies accuracy for related historical materials by field investigation on and measurement of the base ruins of Special Attack Units Shinyo in Taiwan and the Penghu archipelago. The current state and changes of the military ruins are meanwhile canvassed. Narrative interviews of participants in the war also supplement true experiences that were not recorded in literature. Could the seemingly splendid Special Attack Units and their sequent effects play a crucial role in the entire war? How is the relation of “war and the environment” and “war and a world of ordinary mortals” deduced? With the perspectives on the development of Special Attack Units, their deployment in Taiwan and the Penghu archipelago, and base deployment, this study tries to confer on the role that this Special Attack Units weapon played in that significant era and at the same time investigates Taiwan''s historical circumstance and position in this war.

Due to availability of time synchronism in Global Positioning System (GPS), synchronized Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) based on GPS can real-time measure voltage and current phasors at every power system bus. This method is more efficient and fast than calculation of power flow or state estimation. This thesis not only research into the observation of GPS 1PPS (one Pulse Per Second) but also presents an implementable structure of PMU and realizes and verifies it. Moreover, this thesis compares four different digital algorithms in phasor and frequency estimation, and selects Discrete Fourier Transform method, DFT, which is the most appropriate for theproposed PMU.
