Yuan, Hongbo. "Fetal deaths in the United States, 1997 vs 1991." Thesis, McGill University, 2003. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=84858.

Full text
Abstract:
Objective. To examine the temporal change in fetal death risk in the U.S. from 1991 to 1997 and to assess the extent to which changes in registration practices and labor induction have contributed to that change. Setting. United States. Design. Cohort study. Participants. All singleton pregnancies 20--43 weeks of gestation in 1991 and 1997. Main outcome measure. Fetal death risk (fetal deaths per 10,000 fetuses at risk at each completed gestational week).
Results. From 1991 to 1997, the overall fetal death rate fell from 77.7 to 67.8 per 10,000 total births. However, fetal deaths at 20--22 weeks as a proportion of total births increased from 14.5 to 16.9 per 10,000. In a Cox regression analysis, the crude period effect (1997 vs 1991) at 40--43 weeks was 0.87 (95% CI 0.80--0.94) and remained virtually unchanged (HR 0.88, 95% CI 0.81--0.96) after adjustment for maternal sociodemographic, medical, and lifestyle risk factors. In ecologic (Poisson regression) analysis based on states as the unit of analysis, the crude period effect in non-Hispanic Whites (RR 0.79, 95% CI 0.74--0.84) disappeared (RR 0.98, 95% CI 0.82--1.16) after adjusting for induction of labor. No such effect of induction was observed in Blacks.
Conclusions. Increased registration is probably responsible for an increase in fetal death risk at 20--22 weeks of gestation, whereas the increasing trend toward routine labor induction at and after term appears to have reduced the risk of fetal death, at least among Whites.

e what the USMC's optimal acquisition decision should be (lease or purchase) given potential changes in purchasing patterns over time. This analysis will afford decision makers the ability to make strategic financial decisions based on anticipated changes in the size of the USMC's Garrison Mobile Equipment fleet, as well as anticipated changes in market conditions regarding vehicle purchase prices, incremental costs, and salvage values. To answer these questions, this thesis will analyze historical data (2004 to 2009) for the largest populations of AFVs in the light-duty category and then apply a model that will compare the two alternatives based on their relative net present values. An aggregated view of several different light-duty AFV categories will then identify whether leasing or purchasing would be the most preferred.

Ball, Rebecca W. "Adaptation vs selection: an examination of the impact of deregulation on strategic change in U.S. banks." Diss., Virginia Tech, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/40041.

Full text
Abstract:
This research examines competing theories based on the strategic choice and organizational ecology perspectives by investigating strategic change in the banking industry precedLng and following interest rate and product deregulation of financial institutions in the early 1980's. Adaptation theory suggests that the largest, oldest, and most powerful organizations have superior capacities for adapting to environmental circumstances and that organizational variability reflects changes in the strategy and structure of a firm in response to environmental changes. The organizational ecology perspective hypothesizes that a firm's ability to change is inversely related to organizational age and size and that organizations become inert as they grow and age. The propositions and hypotheses in this research examine the relationship between organizational age and size on both absolute and relative inertia. The association between strategic change on firm survival is also explored. Findings demonstrate partial support for both theories. An explanation for the mixed findings is offered which suggests that both adaptation and organizational ecology theories explain continuous change, while the deregulation period under study represented a period of discontinuous change. A third model of strategic change, proposed by Meyers, Brooks, and Goes (1990) is offered as a better explanation of strategic change among U.S. banks during the decade following deregulation.

Full text
Abstract:
This study will apply the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) to help understand the relationship between traded real estate companies and their respective financial markets. The aim will be to quantitatively explain the link between real estate companies holding different asset types within their portfolio and their traded financial markets using betas from CAPM. Some companies have preferences towards one type of real estate assets; which could be referred to as "portfolio bias." On the other hand some companies have a portfolio bias towards diversification and hold a portfolio of diversified assets. This study will examine how diversification plays a role in both correlation to the market and overall return. The idea is that a real estate company holding a more diversified portfolio performs more like the market and therefore acts more like the market portfolio made up of value weighted stocks and securities within the financial market. A more diversified portfolio should pose less risk and perform better over the long term which many studies have shown to be the case in financial markets. This study will also explore the connection between underlying asset types using residential, retail and diversified assets compared to their traded financial markets to determine the role of portfolio bias.

Abstract:
In this dissertation, the denaturalization of migrants in the US and Italy as represented in newspaper crime reports was identified and compared to the opposing naturalization of Italian crime organizations in Italy and Wall Street/ corporate criminals in the US. This was accomplished through careful, multidisciplinary, scientific analysis of over 100 articles taken from Italian and US newspapers of assorted political tendencies from the years 2004-2010. Quantitative and qualitative methods were combined beginning with a corpus analysis of texts from each group studied followed by a topic analysis designed to identify topics discussed in the media for each group analyzed. In addition, lexical choices were categorized as denaturalization, naturalization or derogation, and examples from texts were examined in depth to reveal linguistic (such as metaphor) strategies involved in negative or positive representation of these groups. A Critical Discourse Analysis Approach combined with Social Semiotics and grounded in Social Identity and Nationalism theories was employed to reveal an underlying racist and xenophobic ideology in both Italian and US media. Results show that in both the United States and Italy, the highlighting of migrants' lack of proficiency in the host country language as well as cultural practices functions as evidence of how migrants are different thus justifying discriminatory practices against them. The resulting categorization of migrants as "Them" serves the dominant group's purpose of staying in power. In conclusion, the author points to a need for teacher educators in the field of second language education and literacy to make it a top priority to educate teachers and students as to how discourse contains underlying ideologies and how to think critically to de-construct and de-mystify them.

Collins, Marshall. "Exclusion vs. Inclusion: American and Turkish Foreign Policy in the Middle East." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2012. https://dc.etsu.edu/honors/39.

Full text
Abstract:
Why do countries engage in democracy promotion around the world? Why is the principle component of U.S. foreign policy abroad assistance with democratization? One answer is the Democratic Peace Theory (DPT) (also known as “Liberal Peace”). Accordingly, DPT states, as its basic tenant, democracies behave differently with one another than they do non-democracies, especially in relation to military altercations. Why are some countries more successful than others in promoting democratic ideals around the world? In order to partly explain this question, I examine American and Turkish foreign policy initiatives in the Middle East from a comparative perspective. The United States of America and the Republic of Turkey both reflect the basic tenant of the Democratic Peace Theory in their foreign policies. Each maintains policies that promote the establishment of democracies and the perpetuation of democratic ideals in the Middle East region. Differences in policies are observable when consideration is placed on the principles of inclusion and exclusion in negotiating, nation building, and the promotion of national interests in foreign affairs. The United States maintains bureaucratic rigidity while Turkey exemplifies an open policy when negotiating with interested parties. An analysis of nuclear proliferation in Iran, the two invasions of Iraq since 1990, and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict reveals an increase and advancement of Turkey’s influence in the spread of democracy in the Middle East and a corresponding decline in that of the U.S. This approach might have strengthened Turkish strategic leverage in the region with comparatively greater (than the United States) ability to promote democratic ideals in the Middle East region through the continued building of partnerships and a dedication to stability of the region, the balancing of internal political ideologies, and the stability of Turkish international relations above all else.

Koci, Dylberina, and Amanda Sidark. ""How convenience, employees and servicescape, influenced by cultural differences, affect customer experience in banks" : a cross-cultural study comparing Sweden and the United States." Thesis, Högskolan Kristianstad, Sektionen för hälsa och samhälle, 2014. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hkr:diva-12791.

Full text
Abstract:
The importance of customer experience in the banking sector is steadily increasing due to product similarity, competition and the global expansion. Additionally, in the twenty-first century, the focus has shifted from a service-based to an experience-based economy where senses, feelings, impressions, perceptions and emotional connections have become central. The global expansion in the banking sector has created a need for cross-cultural studies of customer experience, because of the increase of success when the service delivery is in tune with the cultural differences of customers. Despite the scarcity of cross-cultural studies, the few existing studies have shown significant results. The purpose of this study is hence to compare the perceived customer experience in the banking sector in Sweden and the United States. These two countries are culturally different on the masculinity versus femininity dimension explained by Hofstede in the universally acknowledged study on cross-cultural dimensions. The study has a positivistic, deductive, cross-sectional approach. A questionnaire survey is used based on the three most critical factors affecting customer experience: convenience, employees and servicescape. The findings are significant, showing how culture is affecting customer experience. Swedish respondents have a more positive perception of the total customer experience despite scoring lower on the critical factors than their American counterparts. This can be linked to the high degree of femininity in Sweden, meaning that Swedish customers are putting emphasis on balance, care for others and the quality of life, rather than being materialistic, goal-oriented and competitive. The original value of this dissertation is a better understanding of the impact of cultural differences in customer experience in banks in two culturally different countries: Sweden and the United States.

Mitchener, Donald Keith. "The American Doctrine for the Use of Naval Gunfire in Support of Amphibious Landings: Myth vs. Reality in the Central Pacific of World War II." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2006. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc5609/.

Full text
Abstract:
The United States Marine Corps and the United States Navy developed during the interwar period a doctrine that addressed the problems inherent in the substitution of naval gunfire for artillery support in an amphibious assault. The invasion of Betio Islet, Tarawa Atoll, in November of 1943 was the first test of this doctrine. It has been said many times since the war that the doctrine basically passed this test and that lessons learned at Tarawa increased the efficiency with which the Marine Corps and Navy applied the prewar doctrine during the rest of the war. An analysis of the planning and execution of naval bombardments in the Central Pacific Campaign, after the invasion of the Gilberts, does not support this claim. This analysis leads the researcher to three conclusions. First, the Japanese developed defenses against many of the effects of the gunfire support doctrine that blunted much of the force of American firepower. American planners were slow to recognize the implications of these changes and, consequently, were slow to react to them. Second, many naval commanders responsible for providing naval gunfire support for Central Pacific operations still equated tonnage of ordnance to effectiveness of bombardment, regardless of their frequent references to "the lessons of Tarawa." Finally, strategic concerns and outright ignorance played a large part in determining the use of naval gunfire, the first taking precedence over the "lessons" and the second leading to the ignoring of the "lessons" all together.

Raftery, William. "Efficiency Of Unified Vs. Non-unified State Judiciaries: An Examination Of Court Organizational Performance." VCU Scholars Compass, 2015. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/4073.

Full text
Abstract:
State court systems function in much the same manner as any other government agency in terms of organization and management to utilize public resources in order to provide a public service. The question posed in the late 19th century was whether the courts should be organized and managed as they had been for centuries as local entities locally controlled and operated or transferred to the state level. The desired end was a more efficient use of public resources to achieve faster disposition of cases. This reorganization, called unification, was made up of three individual components: 1) consolidation required the reduction in the number of types of trial court in a state to one or two 2) centralization required the surrendering to the state's chief justice, later the newly created office of state court administrator, all managerial control over these courts, and 3) judicial rulemaking required removing from the legislature the power to create rules of practice and procedure in the courts, instead turning that power over to the courts themselves in the form of judicial councils or later state supreme courts. Unification, relying on principles of scientific management, served as the basis for state court reorganization for nearly a century, however the assumption that consolidation, centralization, and judicial rulemaking would lead to greater levels of efficiency in the courts remained effectively untested. Data for the year 2013 was collected to measure state court efficiency in two ways: case clearance rates (number of cases disposed divided by the number of cases filed) and case clearance rates per judge (number of cases disposed divided by the number of judges). An ordinary least squares regression found no apparent relationship between a state's level of unification and its ability to clear its trial court caseloads.

This paper basically tries to seek if there are any tendencies or possibilities that the power of colonizer still remains in the colonized country in terms of migration policy regarding migrant worker rights. In this paper, the author focuses on the policy of both Malaysia and the United Kingdom as a host country regarding the rights of migrant as the topic of the paper. In this paper the author uses comparative analysis by comparing the migration policy of Malaysia and the United Kingdom and focuses on the migrant worker rights to see if there are any possibilities or tendencies that Malaysia adopted the migration policy of the United Kingdom. In conclusion, the United Kingdom policy regarding the system and recruitment of migrant workers in order to limit the influx of migrant workers influenced Malaysia to adopt similar policy. Anderson, Maria Helen. "Private choices vs. public voices: The history of Planned Parenthood in Houston." Thesis, 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/1911/19239.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the past half century the name Planned Parenthood has become a household term. As its leadership has struggled to create and maintain its identity and to keep it financially afloat, the organization has evolved. This is the story of one local affiliate: Planned Parenthood of Houston and Southeast Texas. Planned Parenthood of Houston had its origins in the philanthropy of Houston's "white-gloved elite," and in the poverty of the Great Depression. It also found support in the courts, which by the 1930s were beginning to re-define the law of obscenity (to exclude contraceptives) and by the 1960s to define the right of privacy as broad enough to encompass the right of marital privacy. These judicial decisions would be crucial precedents to the landmark abortion case, Roe v. Wade, which legalized the right of abortion. Neither Planned Parenthood of Houston nor its parent organization, the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, evolved in a social or legal vacuum. The purpose of this study is to illuminate the history of one affiliate as it grew from a tiny clinic for the poor to a large, powerful urban organization with an eclectic clientele and a number of satellite clinics, an organization in the vanguard of reproductive rights and technology. It also attempts to place Planned Parenthood's legal, institutional, and social history in the context of state and national public policies, and to illuminate ways that the innate federalism of the Planned Parenthood organization, individual's rights to privacy, and government policies intersected and sometimes clashed.

Abstract:
The first vaccine was introduced around the 1880s. Over the years, various vaccines have been introduced into the modern world. Vaccines allowed populations to become resistant (immunized) against some infectious diseases. Vaccination (immunization) was considered one of the greatest successes in public health for the twentieth century. In fact, they have revolutionized the concept of prophylaxis of infectious diseases, which is important in public health. That is why many countries around the world have implemented National Vaccination Plans. A vaccination program needs to be developed appropriately to suit the needs and characteristics of the country and geographical area. Often these vaccination and immunization plans are updated according to new scientific knowledge and guidance. To provide the best way for vaccines to be effective, we have to address the specific needs of the country / region. Developed countries have been encouraged to have higher coverage rates in vaccination. Notably, Portugal has a high coverage rate compared to its vaccination plan. On the other hand, the United States also has high coverage rates with vaccines, but they have seen a drop in recent years. In addition, it is very clear that in a country like Portugal, we find some vaccines that may not be present in another country, such as the United States and vice versa. Comparison of these plans and guidelines is essential to understand the differences and what this can mean for everyone (from the professionals involved in the process to the general public), since a national vaccination plan is a very important tool in public health.

Abstract:
Dissertação de mestrado em English Language, Literature and Culture
This dissertation will investigate how the cultural disparities present within the United States of America and South Korea impact their societies, especially regarding those whose cultural heritage belongs to both countries, and how culture shock can be observed from these disparities. By comparing both nations, this research will focus on how culture can affect the country’s projection and the way their people are perceived by the rest of the world. It will begin with a contextualization chapter in order to analyze South Korea’s and the United States’ relationship throughout the years and to clarify the notion of Confucianism. Followed by a comparison of the countries through Hofstede’s doctrine, which topics will be used as parameters throughout the rest of the research. In this dissertation, the processes of Globalization, Multiculturalism, and popular culture will be explored so to obtain an answer to the question of cultural evolution and how this may transform a specific group of people. The last part of this research incorporates how foreigner communities are treated in each country and how the previously developed themes have impacted these specific situations. Finally, the thesis will conclude with a compilation of results from these phenomena and their impact on South Koreans and Americans.

Abstract:
This comparative legal analysis evaluates the issue of terrorism and how it has been dealt with respectively by the United States and Israeli Supreme Courts. Since the events of 9/11, combating terrorism has become one of the primary concerns of the US government while it is a matter that has pervaded Israeli policy since its birth as a nation-state. The analysis is centered on examining how each state‘s Supreme Court has confronted the issue with the Israeli Supreme Court using a ―Business as Usual‖ model and the US taking an ―Emergency Powers‖ approach. It is argued that terrorism is an ongoing issue that cannot be justified as an emergency and the US Court would do better in adopting Israel‘s method of adjudication in these matters. It is also suggested that the US could learn from Israel‘s policy towards torture as the US policy has largely been cruel and unsuccessful.

Abstract:
The main purpose of this master thesis is to examine the concept of populism in the post- Gutenberg era. The research stems from a premise that the evolution of the political milieu and change of the media landscape implies a need for a different approach to analyzing populism. The decline of traditional political parties, the disappearance of political cleavages, and the personalization of politics precipitate the need to re-evaluate the debate about the right definition of populism. Based on a comparative case study of two leaders - Andrej Babiš and Donald Trump, this thesis examines how various theories of populism explain their behavior and tries to determine the most suitable option. Three definitions of populism are studied - populism as an ideology, populism as a discourse, and populism as a political style. While comparing political programs, discourse, and marketing strategies of both candidates, this thesis offers a complex insight into political campaigning on both sides of the Atlantic. At the same time, this research discusses the relationship between the concept of populism and personalized politics. These two concepts form a personalized leadership where the combination of populism and personality traits of the leader might influence the political programs, discourse, and marketing...

Abstract:
A History of Unequal Opportunity in the U.S. Segregation of Latino School Children Half a century has passed since the U.S. Supreme Court famously stated that separate educational facilities are inherently unequal. After all this time, separate facilities are still the reality and they are still unequal. This thesis examines the educational experience of Latino children in the United States from the twentieth century up to the present, with the main focus on the area of the American Southwest. The history of Latino school segregation is examined from the legal perspective, focusing on the significant court cases in which Latinos fought against segregation and for equal educational opportunities. A special attention is paid to Mendez v. Westminster federal court case, which has ended de jure segregation of Latinos after the World War II. While the topic of school segregation in relation to Latinos is often overlooked by professional literature and little known to the public, it is very important as Latinos represent one fourth of all public school children in the United States today. This paper concludes that, because of school segregation, the educational history of Latinos in the United States is one of unequal opportunity. Moreover, the educational opportunities of Latino children remain...
