Abstract:
e23276 Background: Cancer is now a pandemic worldwide. Although the mortality from cancer is downtrending due to the advent of newer treatment modalities, the global burden of cancer is exponentially increasing due to early detection.Understanding the current cancer demographics can aid in developing strategies to curb the morbidity and mortality from these malignancies. Methods: The data was obtained using 2 databases: GLOBOCAN for global trends, & Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Result database Research Plus Data, 17 Registries, Nov 2022 Sub (2000-2020) for the data in the United States (US). We further stratified SEER data based on incidence, gender & median months of survival (mOS), using the Log-rank test (GraphPad Prism). Results: As per the latest GLOBOCAN analysis, 18,094,716 new cancers (51.63% males,48.36% females) & 9,894,402 deaths (55.49% males, 44.51% females) from cancer occurred, worldwide. The 5 most commonly diagnosed cancers globally were, breast (12.5%), lung (12.2%), colorectal cancer (CRC) (10.7%), prostate (7.8%), & stomach (6%). However, the 5 most common cancers causing mortality globally, were lung (18.2%), CRC (9.5%), liver (8.4%) stomach (7.8%), & breast (6.9%). Whereas, in the US, 2,281,658 new cancers (males 53.75%, females 46.24%) were detected in 2020, & 612,390 deaths (males 52.58%, females 47.41%) occurred from it. The 5 most commonly diagnosed cancers were breast (11.1%), lung (10%), prostate (9.2%), CRC (6.8%), & melanoma (4.2%). Cancer-related mortality was attributed to lung (22.6%), CRC (8.9%), pancreas (7.8%), breast (7%), & prostate (5.3%). SEER data analysis for cancer mortality in the US is listed below in Table 1. Conclusions: Analysis of 2 large databases show that the most common cancers around the world, including the US, are breast, lung, colon & prostate cancers. Breast cancer has the highest incidence, but lung cancer has the highest mortality worldwide. In the US, Whites are more affected & except breast cancer, males have a greater predeliction for the common cancers. mOS was greater for females over all. This study emphasizes the need for further analysis to introspect if modalities such as next generation sequencing-directed immunotherapy would prove beneficial in increasing overall survival. Abstract:
China has a notorious reputation for infringing on intellectual property, especially copyrights. Despite making substantial improvements in its copyright laws over the years, China continues to be haunted by this reputation. But is it really true? By analyzing China’s Copyright Law, this piece explores whether the assumption that China is a notorious infringer is valid. By comparing the copyright laws of the United States to those of China, and by comparing the number of litigated copyright cases that have recently occurred in both countries, this Article concludes that unfortunately Chinese citizens are still severely infringing on international copyrights. Such infringement harms not only foreign copyright owners, but Chinese citizens as well. Notwithstanding this dire conclusion, there is still hope. This paper posits three possible resolutions to help cure China’s reputational ills and weighs each solution's effectiveness.

Yuan, Hongbo. "Fetal deaths in the United States, 1997 vs 1991." Thesis, McGill University, 2003. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=84858.

Full text
Abstract:
Objective. To examine the temporal change in fetal death risk in the U.S. from 1991 to 1997 and to assess the extent to which changes in registration practices and labor induction have contributed to that change. Setting. United States. Design. Cohort study. Participants. All singleton pregnancies 20--43 weeks of gestation in 1991 and 1997. Main outcome measure. Fetal death risk (fetal deaths per 10,000 fetuses at risk at each completed gestational week).
Results. From 1991 to 1997, the overall fetal death rate fell from 77.7 to 67.8 per 10,000 total births. However, fetal deaths at 20--22 weeks as a proportion of total births increased from 14.5 to 16.9 per 10,000. In a Cox regression analysis, the crude period effect (1997 vs 1991) at 40--43 weeks was 0.87 (95% CI 0.80--0.94) and remained virtually unchanged (HR 0.88, 95% CI 0.81--0.96) after adjustment for maternal sociodemographic, medical, and lifestyle risk factors. In ecologic (Poisson regression) analysis based on states as the unit of analysis, the crude period effect in non-Hispanic Whites (RR 0.79, 95% CI 0.74--0.84) disappeared (RR 0.98, 95% CI 0.82--1.16) after adjusting for induction of labor. No such effect of induction was observed in Blacks.
Conclusions. Increased registration is probably responsible for an increase in fetal death risk at 20--22 weeks of gestation, whereas the increasing trend toward routine labor induction at and after term appears to have reduced the risk of fetal death, at least among Whites.

e what the USMC's optimal acquisition decision should be (lease or purchase) given potential changes in purchasing patterns over time. This analysis will afford decision makers the ability to make strategic financial decisions based on anticipated changes in the size of the USMC's Garrison Mobile Equipment fleet, as well as anticipated changes in market conditions regarding vehicle purchase prices, incremental costs, and salvage values. To answer these questions, this thesis will analyze historical data (2004 to 2009) for the largest populations of AFVs in the light-duty category and then apply a model that will compare the two alternatives based on their relative net present values. An aggregated view of several different light-duty AFV categories will then identify whether leasing or purchasing would be the most preferred.

Ball, Rebecca W. "Adaptation vs selection: an examination of the impact of deregulation on strategic change in U.S. banks." Diss., Virginia Tech, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/40041.

Full text
Abstract:
This research examines competing theories based on the strategic choice and organizational ecology perspectives by investigating strategic change in the banking industry precedLng and following interest rate and product deregulation of financial institutions in the early 1980's. Adaptation theory suggests that the largest, oldest, and most powerful organizations have superior capacities for adapting to environmental circumstances and that organizational variability reflects changes in the strategy and structure of a firm in response to environmental changes. The organizational ecology perspective hypothesizes that a firm's ability to change is inversely related to organizational age and size and that organizations become inert as they grow and age. The propositions and hypotheses in this research examine the relationship between organizational age and size on both absolute and relative inertia. The association between strategic change on firm survival is also explored. Findings demonstrate partial support for both theories. An explanation for the mixed findings is offered which suggests that both adaptation and organizational ecology theories explain continuous change, while the deregulation period under study represented a period of discontinuous change. A third model of strategic change, proposed by Meyers, Brooks, and Goes (1990) is offered as a better explanation of strategic change among U.S. banks during the decade following deregulation.

Full text
Abstract:
Compared to those in international commercial and investment arbitration, arbitrator-challenge practi-ces in inter-state cases are abnormally rare. The reasons behind the asymmetric practices include the ideology towards the role of arbitrators (authority vs. expertise), the effectiveness of enforcement (whether the award can be executed in domestic courts or whether there exist preconditions), and the unique structure and function of the specific tribunals. By virtue of illustrating the rules and practi-ces of the ad hoc tribunal established under Annex VII of the United States Convention on the Law of the Sea, the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal, and the International Court of Justice, the current standard, “justifiable doubts to the impartiality and independence of arbitrators”, is not interpreted uniformly and somehow unreasonable. To overcome the phenomenon of fragmentation and other problems, the arbitrator-challenge rules in inter-state disputes should not be treated differently and should be harmonized with rules and case laws developed in international commercial and investment arbitration.

Abstract:
Disorder within Dialects is a new framework that has helped guide a series of studies on childhood Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) within African American English (AAE) and Southern White American English (SWAE), two dialects spoken in the southern region of the United States. In this chapter, I review the basic tenets of the Disorder with Dialects framework, contrasting it with the traditional Dialect vs. Disorder framework. Then, focusing on children’s use of finite markers within AAE and SWAE and using data from several published studies, I demonstrate how dialect-informed materials and strategic scoring systems can be used to identify children with DLD within these dialects and perhaps within other linguistic varieties spoken in the United States and elsewhere.

Full text
Abstract:
Concerns about safety have generated considerable research on warnings in recent years. A number of factors that influence warning effectiveness have been investigated. One factor is perceived hazard, which is a belief about how dangerous a product, environment or activity may be. The purpose of the present study was to conduct a cross-cultural investigation between the beliefs and attitudes about the safety of consumer products, the roles of product manufacturers and government in product safety, and aspects regarding warnings by participants in Brazil and in the United States (U.S.). A total of 282 individuals (including college students and adult volunteers) were recruited from these two countries. Participants in both countries believed that government would act to protect them by recalling or banning unsafe products and that manufacturers are more concerned with profits than safety. U.S. participants believed that the products in the U.S. were safer at a level that was significantly higher than what Brazilians believed about their products. Interestingly Brazilians reported that they read warnings more than the U.S. participants reported but Brazilian participants believed their warning labels were of poorer quality than what the U.S. participants reported. Other results show additional differences between the two populations. The results are discussed in terms of acknowledging that cultural background can affect safety-related beliefs.

Full text
Abstract:
Pipeline codes and regulations worldwide have less stringent requirements for low-wall stress pipelines. Factors underlying this include a reduced exposure zone as pipeline pressure decreases and the expectation that leaks occur for lower wall stress. This report evaluates leak versus rupture as a function of wall stress with a focus on pipelines operating between 20 to 40 percent of the specified minimum yield stress. Potential threats to the integrity of low-stress pipelines are identified and worst-case scenarios for these threats evaluated to determine leak versus rupture as a function of wall stress. The evaluation is based on an assessment of existing full-scale test data, incident experience in the United States, and mechanics and fracture calculations.

Lv, Yongcai, Yanhua Yao, Jingjing Lei, and Tao Tang. The role of cold forceps technique in diminutive colorectal polyps: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials. INPLASY - International Platform of Registered Systematic Review and Meta-analysis Protocols, November 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.37766/inplasy2022.11.0135.

Abstract:
Review question / Objective: The European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and the United States Multi-Society Task Force recommends the use of old snare polypectomy (CSP) for < 10 mm polyps. However, recent randomized clinical trials (RCTs) showed some conflicting results in cold forceps technique including cold forceps polypectomy (CFP) and jumbo forceps polypectomy (JFP) compared with CSP in diminutive colorectal polyps (DCPs) (≤5mm), especially in 1-3mm polyps. Condition being studied: Current studies have some conflicting results in the cold forceps technique vs cold snare technique for diminutive colorectal polyps (≤5mm). This is the first systematic review and meta-analysis comparing the cold forceps technique with the cold snare technique in 1-5mm polyps. We evaluated these two techniques in terms of complete resection rate, mean polypectomy time, rate of retrieved polyps, and complication.
