Abstract:
Background: Involvement of communities in the field of health research has been at the forefront of what is considered as ethical conduct of research. A commonly used approach is regular meetings with locally recognized community leaders to consult about research activities, i.e. community engagement. At the Ifakara Health Research Institute (IHI) in Bagamoyo, Tanzania, different approaches to engaging with the community in health research have been used, but there has not been a systematic understanding of the functioning of the community network that is engaged within health research. Methods: To understand the community networks engaged in health research, perceptions of community stakeholders and researchers on the functionality of the community networks was performed. We conducted six focus group discussions with respondents who have participated in IHI research for the past five years and 49 in-depth interviews. Results: Community networks involved in engagement were influenced by the type of research project and kind of participants needed. Different community networks were involved in engagement activities, namely village executive officers, community health workers, hamlet leaders, nurses, doctors and community advisory boards. Approaches used during engagement processes to inform potential participants about the work of IHI and specific studies that are undertaken were useful in passing key information, however, they did not always reach the target population due to having limited levels of interaction with potential participants. Participants and researchers suggested additional ways to engage with the community. Conclusion: There is a need of developing a community engagement unit that would work across projects to support engagement with the community. The unit will maintain continuous engagement with the community and conduct research to understand the relationship between communities we work in and researchers. Funding of this unit could be done through contributions from the core budget, individual’s projects or competitive grant application.

Abstract:
This paper describes an initiative aimed at fostering inquiry-oriented learning through the introduction of the core unit Teachers as Researchers into the first year of the undergraduate program at the Institute of Early Childhood, Macquarie University. The unit contained three components: 1) introductory research skills for first-year students; 2) training for information technology skills; and 3) a hands-on approach where staff were engaged in research about the students’ learning. These aspects of the Teachers as Researchers unit combined to make it a powerful learning experience for students and staff alike. Several outcomes are evident in the early data analysis. First, students gained confidence in their developing ICT skills, and second, the unit has made a notable contribution to encouraging a ‘community of inquiry amongst pre-service teachers.

Abstract:
Abstract Accreditation in accordance with the international General Requirements for the Competence of Testing and Calibration Laboratories (HRN EN ISO/IEC 17025 standard) has become a widely accepted method of quality management and objective evidence of technical competence, knowledge, and skills of testing and calibration laboratories. In 2010, the Institute for Medical Research and Occupational Health (IMROH) had its management system accredited against the HRN EN ISO/IEC 17025 standard for the following scopes: determination of radioactivity, testing of ambient air quality, and testing in the scope of ionising radiation protection. This accreditation encompassed three laboratories: Radiation Protection Unit, Environmental Hygiene Unit, and the Radiation Dosimetry and Radiobiology Unit. In accordance with the rules of the Croatian Accreditation Agency, the second re-accreditation is due in 2020. This paper describes and discusses the quality management system at IMROH over the ten years of its implementation. We share our experiences about non-conformities discovered during regular work, internal audits, and external audits performed by the Croatian Accreditation Agency. The accredited management system significantly improved the performance of the accredited units, and the Institute increased its visibility and marketing advantage, consequently improving its market position.

Abstract:
This case study explored changes in seven in-service middle school science teachers’ understandings of project-based learning (PBL) environments after participating in a summer institute on PBL. Of particular interest was their participation in the institute as learners in a PBL unit exploring the effect of land use on water quality in the watershed. We investigated how well teachers were able to apply their understanding of PBL as they designed their own units on water quality in their watershed. Research questions focused the study on how participation in a summer teacher institute on PBL prepared middle school teachers to describe key features of project-based learning environments, and how well they were able to incorporate these features in PBL units. Data collection included a qualitative pre/post PBL survey, teachers’ watershed units, and field notes from the institute. Findings from the pre and post survey showed that teachers demonstrated a vague understanding of essential features of PBL environments pre institute and a detailed understanding of PBL post institute. Teachers’ units varied in the degrees to which PBL features were exhibited. Strengths of the units included driving questions and benchmark lessons. Shortcomings included few opportunities for student-directed investigation of sub-driving questions.

Full text
Abstract:
AbstractAre similarities of temperature, snow and ice cover, and (certain) marine mammals sufficient to warrant both polar regions being considered a single object of study or governance? We argue that their treatment as a unit is an invitation to examine the motivations behind the choice to be polar rather than Arctic or Antarctic. For individuals such as James Clerk Ross or Roald Amundsen, logistical requirements and analogous goals facilitated careers spanning both the Arctic and the Antarctic. This trend continued through the 20th century as individual scientists studying phenomena such as glaciers, sea ice, or aurora defined their research as “polar” in nature. Organisations such as the Scott Polar Research Institute and Norwegian Polar Institute could draw on traditions of national exploration in both polar regions, while the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute in St. Petersburg gained its southern mandate with the importance of the International Geophysical Year. By comparison, neither the Arctic Institute in Copenhagen nor the Argentine Antarctic Institute felt any need to become polar. The creation of polar identity is ultimately a matter of geopolitics, of the value states see in instruments and symbols that speak to polar rather than Arctic or Antarctic interests. In cases such as Finland’s icebreaker industry, a technological capability justified Antarctic interest even without any national research tradition. We conclude by asking whether there is anything more natural about the polar regions than there is about the concept of a “tripolar” world in which the high alpine regions form a natural unit along with the Arctic and Antarctic.

Abstract:
The Advanced Joining Processes (AJP) is an autonomous research unit at the Institute of Science and Innovation in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (INEGI) that works closely with the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP). This unit is staffed by professors, post-doctoral researchers, PhD students, MSc students and research fellows. The AJP unit has four key competences, established to support all aspects related to the study of advanced joining processes: testing, simulation, production and machine design. The AJP unit has robust and fully independent competences in the manufacture of experimental specimens and components. The unit operates a fully equipped laboratory with all facilities necessary to manufacture specimens, moulds, test fixtures and testing equipment. The unit has extensive experience in testing complex specimens’ geometry under a wide range of conditions. Research is carried out to determine the performance of structural joints under quasi-static loads, high strain rates, fatigue and creep conditions, among many others. Complementarily, the unit also has a strong machine design capability, being experienced in the development and manufacture of custom designed testing equipment (such as creep testing machines, drop-weight testing machines, torsion testing machines, split Hopkinson pressure bars and devices for glass transition temperature measurement). These experimental capabilities are complemented with robust numerical simulation competencies, which allow to streamline the design process by creating powerful models that can accurately predict the mechanical behaviour of advanced structural joints. These capabilities enable the AJP unit to undertake new and challenging research projects, reacting quickly to current industrial demands and scientific trends, due to its autonomy. This work methodology allows the AJP unit to simultaneously operate in two main fronts. One is fundamental academic research, resulting in MSc and PhD thesis and scientific publication, and the other is comprised of knowledge-transfer activities with industrial partners, which generate funding that can be used to support additional fundamental research. By combining these two approaches, the AJP unit proves that sound technological based educational processes can be achieved while undertaking cutting edge research with practical and industrial value.

Abstract:
Background Research active hospitals have better patient outcomes and improvements in healthcare are associated with greater staff engagement in research. However, barriers to research activity include inadequate knowledge/training and perceptions that research is a specialist activity. Nursing is an academic discipline but the infrastructure supporting nursing research worldwide is variable and sustaining clinical academic careers remains challenging. The National Institute of Health Research 70@70 Senior Nurse Research Leader programme provides dedicated time to increase clinical academic opportunities and foster a research culture across England; we describe initiatives developed by one National Institute of Health Research 70@70 leader to increase clinical staff engagement in research. Aim The purpose of this work was to develop initiatives to facilitate clinical research opportunities and bridge the gap between clinical care and research. Methods New strategies were developed in one health service to increase clinical staff engagement in research activity. This included: (a) Chief Nurse Research Fellows: clinical staff undertaking bespoke research training to identify local clinical research priorities, (b) an exemplar nurse-led Embedding Research In Care unit to pioneer innovation, evaluation and research participation supported by a research facilitator and (c) a Clinical Academic Network for nursing, midwifery and allied healthcare professionals to aid collaborative working. Results The first cohort of Chief Nurse Research Fellows have successfully completed a bespoke training programme and, with mentoring, developed projects to tackle clinical problems. The Embedding Research In Care unit initiative was configured and the first Embedding Research In Care unit has been awarded. A Clinical Academic Network group of 25+ nurses, midwives and allied health professionals was established and provides peer support and mentoring. Conclusions This multi-faceted approach has successfully supported research training/engagement, enabled career development and identified nurses/midwives with potential to undertake clinical academic careers. A range of strategies, such as those described in this paper, are required to successfully bridge the gap between clinical care and research and provide additional opportunities for clinical staff to become engaged in a research active career.

The Military Medical Research Center (CCSMM) is a health research unit, subordinated to the Medical Directorate of the Ministry of National Defence. The overall objective is represented by conducting researches on the medical protection against weapons of mass destruction (ADM) that use chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) agents, on the accidents involving CBRN agents and on the military-medical expertise in the field. The CCSMM specialists develop methods and techniques for diagnosis, prophylaxis, treatment and recovery to optimize medical countermeasures during peace, war, or crisis situations. The activity is complementary to the one carried by the “Cantacuzino” National Military-Medical Institute for Research and Development which deals with the diagnosis of infectious diseases (microbiology and epidemiology) and the production of reagents and biological medicinal products for infectious diseases. In conclusion, CCSMM is a unique healthcare unit nationwide, by its field of activity, having a tradition of over half a century, during which it has formed specialists and has had outstanding achievements in the medical protection against CBRN weapons and agents. There are prerequisites for the further development and visibility of the institution.

Abstract:
Academic research is a key activity of higher learning institutions, where the knowledge, skills and capabilities of the staff are directed towards scientific activities. The case of academic engineering research groups is quite particular, as they must perform academic research work but still consistently work with industrial partners in problem-solving research activities. Although they appear to be distinct, these aspects are interconnected and combining impactful research work and academic training is highly advantageous to group performance. This paper studies the operation of academic engineering research groups, starting with a literature review on the subject, followed by an analysis of a case study. The target of the case study is the Advanced Joining Processes Unit, part of the Institute of Science and Innovation in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering and the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, a leading research unit in mechanical engineering, performing research on advanced joining processes. The main lesson drawn is that to achieve lasting success and significant impact on the scientific community and society, a research group must operate with clear and result-oriented leadership, able to provide a work environment with well-defined goals, and which is consistently working towards knowledge generation and dissemination.

Abstract:
The Institute of Histology and Embryology "Prof. dr Aleksandar Đ. Kostić" is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. The founder of the Institute, the first Professor of Histology and Embryology, and the first Director of the Institute was Professor Aleksandar Đ. Kostić, PhD, one of the last Renaissance figures of the XX century. Investing tremendous effort and enthusiasm he developed the Institute, from a bare room, with only four walls, a floor, and a ceiling, into a building which was, in the late 1920s, considered to be one of the most modern buildings housing a scientific institute in South-East Europe, which, for that time, had exceptionally good conditions for research and teaching, a very dedicated staff, but also a highly developed research potential, a rich library, terminology unit, and a photography department. After the bombing of Belgrade and of the Institute, on April 6, 1941, he rebuilt the building and reestablished the Institute, yet once more, during his lifetime, and then, due to ideological differences, he was forced into retirement and removed from the Faculty. He was morally rehabilitated posthumously, together with a group of teachers from the Faculty of Medicine, at the session of the Academic Council of the Faculty of Medicine held on January 24, 2001.

Abstract:
Recently economic analysis of health care is demanded and actual due to becoming more and more urgent need for restructuring and a choice of priorities for this boundary section of medicine. In the article are considered strong and weaknesses of health system models, including in option of a so-called transitional economy on the example of federal N. N. Petrov Research Institute of Oncology. Now the N. N. Petrov Research Institute of Oncology can call establishment of national health system with state regulation of programs of general obligatory medical insurance. In this model of health care the state obliges employers and citizens to deduct part of the income on the health insurance, and producers of medical services to provide the population with medical care, including with mediation of insurance companies within obligatory medical insurance. Introduction of this model allowed to provide citizens with full medical care at the expressed reduction of expenses (to 8-12 % of gross domestic product). In the majority of medical institutions medical care is “free”, therefore, to maintain market balance at increase in demand for service, "waiting lists" are entered, patients with “priority” diseases are exposed to treatment, often there are complaints to the unfriendly attitude towards patients. The ideal health system has to provide medical services in unlimited volume without insurance premiums, deductions or individual share at a full freedom of choice of the doctor. Common problem for all systems, mentioning in no small measure functioning of oncologic establishments, is uncertainty of a state role and involvement of each of participants (the state, insurance companies, suppliers of medical services) in realization of various potential functions and problems of health care.

Abstract:
Introduction. The paper briefly reviews the current state and prospects of Mongolian studies at the Institute of Oriental Studies (RAS) that celebrated its 200th anniversary in 2018. The Institute maintains and strengthens its positions as a leading national and global research center for Oriental studies. Goals. The study attempts at summarizing the Institute’s 2010–2020 experiences in developing Mongolian studies as a traditional branch of Russia’s Oriental studies, characterizing the present state and development prospects with due regard of actual achievements, challenges, and problems. Materials and Methods. The work analyzes scholarly publications authored by associates of the Mongolian Studies Unit (Department of Korean and Mongolian Studies) and other departments of the Institute in 2010–2020, including operating archives ― through the use of historical, chronological, descriptive, analytical and other methods. Results. The study shows that despite a number of objective and subjective difficulties, associates of the Institute keep developing Mongolian studies exploring some topical and understudied issues of ancient, medieval, modern, and contemporary Mongolia; providing comprehensive insights into present-day political, socioeconomic, and cultural frameworks of Mongolia proper and Russia-Mongolia relations. Still, the Institute ― and specifically the Mongolian Studies Unit ― experiences a critical shortage of qualified young Mongolists, and if the problem remains unsolved respective research perspectives should encourage no optimism. The number of highly experienced Mongolists and Orientalists that conduct research activities on a range of Mongolia-related issues (history, historiography, source studies, discoveries and publications of new sources, written monuments and archives, philology, etc.) affiliated thereto is small enough. The former publish their scholarly works and actively cooperate with colleagues from similar scientific and educational organizations of Moscow, St. Petersburg, Irkutsk, Ulan-Ude, Elista, Kyzyl, Vladivostok and other Russian cities; establish relations with foreign humanities research centers of Mongolia, China, Japan, the United States, Great Britain, Germany, France, etc. Chronologically, the review covers the period between 2010 and 2020, and characterizes key changes in staff composition; shows fundamental research trends; summarizes outcomes of scholarly, organizational and publishing activities; mentions main joint and individual monographs authored (published) by associates of the Department of Korean and Mongolian Studies in 2010–2020. The paper specifies basic development problems faced by Mongolian studies in the context of Oriental studies as such, provides conclusions and prognoses for further evolution of this research line at the Institute of Oriental Studies (RAS).

Abstract:
Abstract. An extensive number of investigations on the energetic utilization efficiency of nutrients and feedstuffs by cattle were carried out in the former Oskar-Kellner-Institute (now the »Oskar Kellner« Research Unit of Nutritional Physiology at the Research Institute for the Biology of Farm Animals (FBN), Dummerstorf). The amounts of methane (CH4) that they produced were compiled and stratified with regard to various performances, dietary nutrient composition and nutrition levels. With increasing food intake and performance, an increase of CH4 emission per animal was observed. However, with increasing performance, a strong decrease of CH4 production per unit of product was determined. Altogether, the 12.74 million cattle in Germany produce 1.04 million tons of CH4 per year. This represents 1.25 % of the CH4 production of the 1.3 thousand million (UK)/billion (US) cattle in the world or 0.22 % of the total emission on the earth. As a greenhouse gas, CH4 from cattle worldwide and from cattle in Germany account for 3.5 % and 0.04 % of global warming, respectively. In addition, opportunities for a further reduction of enteric CH4 release are discussed.

Abstract:
The National Institute was founded in 1938, after a first initiative by Sir Josiah Stamp in the early 1930s. Stamp, who was the President of the London Midland and Scottish railway, had been connected with a Rockefeller Foundation scheme to provide fellowships in the social sciences; he became convinced that a wider attack was needed on the problem of financing the social sciences in Britain and his objective became the development of a central unit, of British origin, with funds under its own control. This would supplement and replace the help given by the Rockefeller Foundation (then the main source of research funds in the British social sciences) and develop an increasingly large research effort in economics and related subjects. Stamp made known his views and with the support of a number of prominent academics, in particular William Beveridge, Director of the London School of Economics; Henry Clay, Economic Adviser to the Bank of England; and Hubert Henderson, Secretary of the Economic Advisory Panel, began to search for British financial support.

Abstract:
The article aims to provide an account of an academic scientific institute as an independent functioning unit of the Soviet scientific system from the first half of the 1960s until the end of the Soviet era. This was a time of gradual decline of scientific achievements of the USSR after resounding successes in the 1950s. During these years, the growth rate of the number of scientists sharply decreased, and the understanding of their role in the institutions of the USSR Academy of Sciences changed. Using a wide range of archival documents, some used for the first time, the functions of each category of research institute employees, their qualifications, boundaries of authority, and ways to strengthen their position are described as factors that affect the effectiveness of research activities of the institute. Estimates of contemporaries — members of the academic community, given to certain social groups of research institute collectives — are provided. The academic research institute created favorable conditions for free scientific work by organizing a system of positions. Researchers could use the assistance of highly qualified support staff, were spared from mechanical labor and responsibility for technical processes, and had to deal only with science. The formal status of researchers at the Academy during the 1960s — 1980s steadily strengthened until the end of the Soviet era, in which they had the right to influence the election of the director of the institute at the general meeting of the collective, which has also contributed to democratization in the late 1980s. The inability to intervene in individual research processes made it difficult to get rid of vain employees and thus reduced the effectiveness of Soviet scientific institutions.

The way the researcher groups his research data will influence the result of his work. In the literature, this phenomenon is treated as a Problem of the Modifiable Areal Unit. The objective of this article was to analyze the three spatial levels by Municipalities, Regional Centers and Mesoregions using the following data: gross domestic product, effective agricultural production, grain production and gross value of agricultural production for the state of Paraná-Brazil in the period since 2012 until 2015. The methodological procedure studied data from the Paranaense Institute for Economic and Social Development of the above-named variables collected on the website of the Paranaense Institute for Economic and Social Development of the 399 municipalities, 23 regional centers and 10 mesoregions. The results found show the presence of the Modifiable Areal Unit Problem, presenting different results for each level of grouping. The study revealed the problem of the modifiable areal unit is a relevant occurrence and it should be disregarded by researchers who work with clusters of spatial data in their studies. The results found allow a better understanding of the scale effect and demonstrate the efficiency of spatial analysis in socioeconomic data.

Abstract:
The article deals with the history of the museum from the year 1913 up to 2020. The premises and the exposition of the museum are described. The history of the museum begins with the history of the Kyiv Institute, since the first museum was established under the Cabinet and the Cabinet under the Prosecutor of the Kyiv Judicial Chamber. The museum housed seized items that were material evidence in criminal cases. During the Second World War and after it, the Kyiv Institute did not initially have its premises. For a long time, the institute had problems with the premises, until the question of the dissolution of the institute was raised due to the inability to provide it with the proper premises Up to its one hundred jubilee celebration, the museum has to be restored once again. Particularly, this is the merit of Oleksandr Ruvin, the Director of the Kyiv Institute, the ideological organizer and leader who decided to create the museum and Dytro Hamov, the exemployee of the Kyiv Institute, whose efforts created the exposition. The exhibits for the Museum of the Kyiv Institute have been collected for decades, kept by the staff of the Institute and passed from one expert unit to another. Some of the exhibits were donated by colleagues. Part of the exhibits was selected within the Institute from the other departments (information-reference fund, archive, etc.), part was donated to the museum free of charge by individuals and organizations. The exhibits of the museum are unsuitable for use on a previously scheduled destination, and those left out of the civil circulation, items of scientific interest. In general, it should be noted that the dream of many generations of employees of the Institute came true, the Kyiv Institute operates its own forensic museum. However, the exposition also presents other types of forensics. The exhibits of the museum tell about the glorious past of the Kyiv Institute and set up an optimistic view of its future. The museum exhibits also eloquently confirm that one should not abandon the history of the establishment of the institute until the advent of Soviet rule and the onset of 1923, when the institute was “founded” once again, as this history has taken place and imprinted on the continued existence of both science and expert practice, not only the Kyiv Institute, but all forensic and expert institutions.
