Abstract:
AbstractThe Radzinowicz Library is the specialist criminology library of the Institute of Criminology, a research and teaching department of the University of Cambridge. As Stuart Stone explains, it is the premier academic criminology collection in the United Kingdom and indeed it is one of the major collections in this subject in the world. The library primarily serves the Institute and the University but also the wider community of criminal justice researchers, many of whom are regular visitors. In common with other libraries, financial pressures are a continuing concern, especially because of the interdisciplinary nature of the subject. Outreach and engagement with organisations outside academia add to the distinctive characteristics of the library.

Abstract:
Criminologists are often frustrated by the disconnect between sound empirical research and public policy initiatives. Recently, there have been several attempts to better connect research evidence and public policy. While these new strategies may well bear fruit, I believe the challenge is largely an intellectual one. Ideas and research evidence must guide public policy and practice. In this article, I present highlights from my tenure as the Director of the National Institute of Justice (NIJ), the research, development, and evaluation agency in the Department of Justice. One of the ideas that I emphasized at NIJ was “Translational Criminology.” I believe translational criminology acknowledges NIJ’s unique mission to facilitate rigorous research that is relevant to the practice and policy. I also discuss the challenges I faced in bringing research to bear on public policy and practice. I end with a call for my colleagues in criminology and criminal justice to become more involved in government.

AbstractThis article by Adrian Howe is based on a presentation given at the ‘Sources and Methods in Criminology and Criminal Justice Conference’ in November 2015, jointly sponsored by the Institute of Advanced Education and the Socio-Legal Studies Association. She begins by querying whether there are indeed distinct feminist methods in the social sciences. She outlines the impact of what she calls the ‘methodical revolution’ on the criminology discipline, Foucault's contribution and Foucauldian methodologies deployed in criminological and criminal justice research.

Abstract:
The application of criminology in the investigation of criminal acts committed by children by investigators at the PPA Unit of the Satreskrim Polres Agam is used to make decisions for the settlement of crimes committed by children based on examinations of the children's motivation and reasons for committing crimes. The use of criminology in investigations shows several factors that cause children to commit crimes, namely because of the influence of friends or play groups such as in the crime of motorbike theft committed by children. Another cause is the negative influence of cellphones. For example, one case of intercourse with a child by a child in Agam District, the cause is because the child often watches pornographic videos. Constraints in the application of criminology in the investigation of criminal acts committed by children by investigators at the PPA Unit of the Criminal Investigation Unit of the Agam Police are the capabilities and methods of child assistant investigators / investigators in every process of investigating child criminal acts when it is related to the various kinds of education they get as well as with facilities and infrastructure and minimal funds.

Abstract:
This paper introduces to the accounting literature two prominent criminology theories, strain and differential association, as possible explanations for criminal behavior by accountants and applies a recent integration of the two, coercion theory, to three recent financial statement frauds. We argue that understanding and preventing fraudulent accounting can be furthered by placing the phenomenon within the context of criminology research, which supports both individual and group-level explanations for white-collar crime. We also suggest that the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) moved too quickly in adopting Cressey's fraud triangle as the explanatory model for financial fraud in Statement on Auditing Standards (SAS) No. 99. Our analysis, although exploratory in nature, suggests that examining financial statement fraud through the lens provided by criminology theory may provide new insights into its causes as well as tools for detection and prevention. We conclude with a discussion of policy implications.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the cultural dynamics within a specialist policing department with a particular focus on the issue of gender. It explores the experiences of a sample group of police officers working within the firearms unit of one metropolitan police force. Culture, the history of policing, specialist departments and the introduction of women are considered in order to gain an in depth understanding of the organisation. Previous research into police culture suggests masculine values remain intensely dominant, particularly within the firearms arena, ultimately creating an environment, which outwardly appears unattractive to women. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with twenty-one police officers including eleven male and ten female officers from Constable to Inspector rank. The research focused on the pre-joining experiences of the officers involved and also their personal experiences of life on the firearms unit. The study identified that the issues within the firearms unit appear not to be about gender: there was little evidence to suggest that officers within the firearms unit were treated differently or unfairly due to their gender. What was apparent was the presence of in-group/out-group distinctions, with an overwhelming desire from both genders to be accepted and to "fit-in". This has implications with regards to the research concerning occupational cultures, including police culture in particular.

In order to assist honours students and researchers in the Criminology Department at theUniversity of Cape Town to fully utilise resources available through the Internet and other online databases, an online electronic research skills tutorial was developed and implemented. The aim of this research is to assess whether this tutorial is a useful and efficient method of imparting information literacy skills and assisting users to use the rich array of information available electronically. The concept of information literacy is reviewed internationally and in South Africa, in order to place this research within this framework. Concepts of benchmarking and best practice are examined to assess whether the tutorial meets these criteria. Internet trainer certification is studied as well as the importance of linking information tutorials to specific subjects and integrating them with the curriculum. In developing and implementing this tutorial, other information literacy initiatives and Internet tutorials were examined to provide background information and to inform the construction of the tutorial. Initiatives at the University of Cape Town were explored to avoid duplication and overlap and to build on prior training of students and researchers. The practical component of this research reviews the implementation of the tutorial with 13 participants. The participants completed pre-tutorial assessment questionnaires, using open and closed questions, to assess their knowledge and skills. The questionnaire responses were scored on a scale of I to 5 and represented in graphical form. The participants completed the online tutorial, which introduced important sites for criminologists that can be found on the Internet as well as in other electronic databases, and explored how to use the Internet to support research. The tools and techniques to improve Internet searching were reviewed with the participants, as was the critical thinking needed to evaluate information found on the Internet. A post-course evaluation was completed to assess whether the participants had found this a useful experience, whether the course was at an appropriate level and whether the objectives of the course had been achieved. A self-administered follow-up evaluation questionnaire was completed 2 to 3 months after completion of the tutorial in order to assess whether the information contained in the tutorial had been used, sites visited and whether in retrospect, the participants found the experience a useful one. The findings of these questionnaires are analysed and presented in graphical form on a scale of 1 to 5. The analysis of the research shows that the participants of this case study found the experience of doing thc online research skills tutorial a valuable one and that it assisted in developing new skills and in providing a window into all the electronic resources available in their field.

Abstract:
While much has been written on the Australian film and television industry, little has been presented by actual producers, filmmakers and technicians of their time and experiences within that same industry. Similarly, with historical documentaries, it has been academics rather than filmmakers who have led the debate. This thesis addresses this shortcoming and bridges the gap between practitioner experience and intellectual discussion, synthesising the debate and providing an important contribution from a filmmaker-academic, in its own way unique and insightful. The thesis is presented in two voices. First, my voice, the voice of memoir and recollected experience of my screen adventures over 38 years within the Australian industry, mainly producing historical documentaries for the ABC and the SBS. This is represented in italics. The second half and the alternate chapters provide the industry framework in which I worked with particular emphasis on documentaries and how this evolved and developed over a 40-year period, from 1970 to 2010. Within these two voices are three layers against which this history is reviewed and presented. Forming the base of the pyramid is the broad Australian film industry made up of feature films, documentary, television drama, animation and other types and styles of production. Above this is the genre documentary within this broad industry, and making up the small top tip of the pyramid, the sub-genre of historical documentary. These form the vertical structure within which industry issues are discussed. Threading through it are the duel determinants of production: ‘the market’ and ‘funding’. Underpinning the industry is the involvement of government, both state and federal, forming the three dimensional matrix for the thesis. For over 100 years the Australian film industry has depended on government support through subsidy, funding mechanisms, development assistance, broadcast policy and legislative provisions. This thesis aims to weave together these industry layers, binding them with the determinants of the market and funding, and immersing them beneath layers of government legislation and policy to present a new view of the Australian film industry.

Abstract:

Summary Traditionally college education is considered one part of the higher education. However, with the acceleration of junior colleges transforming to technological institute and university of science and technology, along with our country’s entrance into the World Trade Organization (WTO), it is unavoidable that our government will allow foreign universities to set up branch schools in Taiwan. Private universities and colleges in turn face more and more problems in recruiting new students. In addition, the subsidies from the government to the private schools are decreasing year by year and are far from being enough to meet the demands of every school. Furthermore, the government revenue is shrinking because of the economic depression. Therefore, how private schools could utilize the limited resources to make it through the difficult situation is an issue worth to be explored. Two major subjects in management decision are achievement evaluation and cost control, and responsibility center system is widely used in business organization for achievement evaluation and cost control at present. What is called the system of responsibility center is when an organization divide itself into different responsibility centers in order to evaluate achievement and control cost. Each responsibility center makes it own budget, accumulates its real income and cost, and analyze and compare its difference in income and cost, so that the organization could use the references to evaluate achievement, control cost and make various decisions. Activity-Based Costing System has been widely used and developed abroad. Many researchers in our country have done research to calculate the cost of goods with ABC in many different fields in recent years. The research objects include profit undertakings and non-for-profit undertakings. The traditional method of calculating the cost with working activities has been replaced by the concept of calculating the cost of goods with Activity-Based Costing System. Under the circumstances that it is becoming more and more difficult for the operating of private schools, the correct study of student unit costs, proper achievement evaluation, and appropriate cost control are urgently in need. As a result, the theme of this research is on the establishment of the system of responsibility center in private universities and colleges, discussing the related literature and regulations, analyzing case studies, and calculating the student unit costs, thus serves as reference to the decision making of education administrators. The purpose of this study is as follows: 一、 construct the model of calculating the income or cost of every responsibility center with Activity-Based Costing System and describe the content and structure of the responsibility center system. 二、 Second, employ the Activity-Based Costing System model developed by this research to calculate the income or cost of every responsibility center and acquire the student cost of each teaching center, and then serve as the reference to the decision making of education administrators. According to the result of this research, the following conclusions could be made: 一、 The current problems in dealing with accounting information: If the materials in the accounting journal ledger system can not be utilized directly and need additional software written by information engineers, the materials would lack instantaneity; the expenses are not sorted in accordance with the departments which used them directly, thus lowering the validity of achievement evaluation; the administrative units are responsible for the planning, control and execution of the business, but do not computerize the relevant records of the acquired resources, which in turn makes it impossible to separate the responsibility of sharing the cost and affects the accuracy in calculating the cost. 二、 the results of analyzing the case financial materials (1) Tuition, incidental expenses and subsidies are the major the sources of revenue. However, with the limit on the number of classes schools are allowed to enroll students and on the floor square measure, there is little room to raise the revenue of tuition and incidental expenses. (2) Standard for collecting the tuition and incidental expenses is one of the main reason that affects the income of each responsibility center. (3) Because personnel expenses are the major expenditure in private schools, the amount of personnel expenses would be bigger along with the growing number of personnel in administrative centers. (4) The unit cost of students in departments in the environment designing group is relatively higher than that of students in other departments. (5) The profits of centers in the commerce management group are higher than that of centers in the environment designing group. (6) the newly-set and small-scale departments produced the effects of large-scale economy.

This research focuses on whether entry level supervisors in the high-tech industry have the same level of satisfaction regarding the work performance of university and polytechnic graduates, and whether the level of satisfaction is related to population statistical variables. Using balance scorecard as an evaluation tool, this research attempts evaluate the work performance of university and polytechnic graduates from both younger and older generations using the 4 aspects of balance scorecard, and investigate entry level supervisors’ level of satisfaction regarding the work performance of younger and older generation employees graduating from these two systems. The results will be used in high-tech industry human resources management, and will also serve as a reference for people who are already working or are prepared to enter the workplace, in order to improve their personal capabilities. The research results indicated that the work performance of polytechnic graduates is lower than that of university graduates in the areas of finance and customer relations; the communication and negotiation skills and service attitudes of polytechnic graduates require particular attention. Familiarity in operational procedure and technical development needs to be reinforced in university graduates . There are no significant differences in work performance in the areas of internal procedures and learning to grow. At the same time, employees’ evaluation results differ according to differences in supervisors’ academic background and seniority. Usually supervisors with higher academic achievement will be less satisfied about employees’ work performance.

Abstract:
At a time when the world is faced with exceptional conditions and governments are taking various precautions to prevent the spread of the COVID-19, in addition to social life, trends in crime are also changing. According to world experts, reported crime fluctuates, but most forms of crime are in decline. After reviewing police statistics for the period from 1. January to 31. August 2020, in Ljubljana and comparing them with the same period in 2019, we found that reported crime had decreased. A total number of offences and misdemeanours have declined, as have robberies, thefts, burglaries, and domestic violence. The Institute of Criminology, online media, and newspapers in Slovenia have reported an increase in domestic violence, while some also reported a rise in thefts and burglaries in the country. Cybercrime is expected to increase in the future as more people and businesses move online due to the newly formed conditions, using online services, which poses new risks and opens up new opportunities for perpetrators.

Abstract:
This report offers a brief overview of the literature on the defining characteristics of democracy in the 21st century. This report seeks to map out a range of conceptual approaches to understanding democracy, evidence on emerging trends in democratisation, and challenges to realising democracy in its varied forms. The report begins with a discussion on definitions of democracy that have emerged in recent decades (Section 2), highlighting a range of qualifiers that are widely used to differentiate and analyse different democratic regime types. Section 3 summarises trends in key indicators of democracy from widely cited observers – The Economist Intelligence Unit and the V-Dem Institute - and recent trends in public opinion towards democracy, according to World Values and Pew Centre surveys. Section 4 gives a very brief overview of three leading challenges to democracy discussed widely in the literature – gender inequality; the role of media and social media; and declining quality of elections, freedom of expression and civic space.

Abstract:
Review question / Objective: Lorazepam and other benzodiazepines (BZDs) are considered the first choice for treatment of Alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS). But they have significant addiction potential and can cause fatal respiratory depression if used in large doses. The aim of our study is to conduct a network meta-analysis to provide some data support for the clinical treatment of AWS. The patients were persons with alcohol withdrawal. The intervention being studied must be a comparison of the efficacy of the two pharmacologic treatments. The study should not be included if two pharmacologic treatments belonging to the same category were compared. All studies must include one of the following outcomes: Clinical Institute Withdrawal Assessment, revised (CIWA-Ar) score, length of hospital stay, length of intensive care unit (ICU) stay, and the incidence of delirium or seizures. Condition being studied: Side effects and safety of eleven types of agents currently used to treat alcohol withdrawal syndrome.
