Abstract:
This book explores questions of trade union identities and what is termed ‘niche unionism’ in the work. It exposes the inadequacy of the extant industrial relations literature in explaining both contemporary union identities and the significance of niche to union organisation. It explores the contribution of alternative bodies of literature including organisational identity theory, social identity theory and marketing. The work introduces a new approach to understanding unions’ projected identities in the form of a multidimensional framework of analysis developed from more than ten years research designed to isolate the sources of union identity. The projected identities of trade unions certified in Great Britain are examined systematically under broad headings of general, industrial/occupational, organisational and geographical unions. Four drivers to change in union identities are explored, namely, union mergers, union rebranding, new unions and union dissolutions. The work provides a brief comparative analysis of union identities in five other countries, suggesting additional sources of union identity that might be required for a more comprehensive analysis. Finally, the work explores critical questions relating to the future of union identities concerning, the primacy of general unions, the persistence of niche unions, whether general or niche unions are better placed to organise the unorganised and finally whether niche identity a barrier to expanding membership territories.

Abstract:
Chapter 3 discusses the implications of managerialism and organizational structure for police professionalism, with a substantial discussion of the role of Police and Crime Commissioners. It looks at two principal aspects of the contemporary managerial agenda—the use of targets and Key Performance Indicators, and the drive for force amalgamations and mergers. It sets this agenda in the context of the individual officer’s accommodation to the police organization. Technology is a mark of the twenty-first century and the chapter considers both conventional ‘blunderbuss’ technologies and the rising importance of social media, forensic use of DNA, and techniques for combatting cybercrime. It highlights three distinctive challenges of contemporary times: domestic abuse, mental health, and organized/gang crime. It closes by considering the importance of community policing to the public, its effectiveness, and the challenge it poses to training.

Abstract:
This book describes the rules governing appeals before the Court of Justice of the European Union. The appeal is the judicial remedy by which a party may contest a decision of the General Court of the European Union. It concerns matters in which the Tribunal has jurisdiction such as, competition, mergers, state aids, access to documents, restrictive measures, EU staff, trade marks, and other areas of intellectual property. This form of judicial remedy was created just over 25 years ago. It is specific to the ECJ, and can only be learned through the case-law. This book is a description of the case-law, and of the rules that the lawyers pleading appeal cases are required to know.
