Abstract:
The study aimed at examining the factors that affect student-teachers wearing of school uniforms in the Colleges of Education with focus on selected Colleges of Education in the Northern Region of Ghana. The study employed a case study design. The study’s population was level 100, 200, 300 student- teachers of Bagabaga College of Education and Tamale College of Education with an estimated student population of about 3,800. Out of the population, random sampling technique was used to sample 200 student- teachers from the two colleges. Questionnaire was used as the main instrument to collect data on the research question and supported by observation. The findings from the study showed that student- teachers agreed to some of the factors that influence the disinterest in wearing school uniforms among colleges of education students, inter alia, uniforms promote tagging and labelling, uniforms promote misidentification and impersonation, uniforms do not improve performance, uniforms may emphasize the existence of inequalities, uniform wearing is uncomfortable, Uniform is unstylish, Uniform do not respect culture, Uniform promotes conformity. Furthermore, student teachers agreed to the fact that uniform promotes standard, unity, make student- teachers from all social and economic background the same and also do away with bulling and gang activities in the colleges of education. Based on the findings, it was recommended that there should be orientation for student- teachers to educate them on the uniform policy at the colleges of education each academic year and to let the student- teachers know that school uniform is not meant to belittle them as tertiary students. College management should be flexible in the implementation of the uniform policies at the colleges of education. If a uniform policy is implemented, the effectiveness of such policy should be evaluated.

Abstract In Japan school uniforms have been used for role-playing by those other than cosplayers. In order to understand this social discourse, this article examines the chronological development of Japanese school uniforms and then discusses how and why imitation school uniforms have been adopted and adapted by students at uniform-free schools as well as by female J-pop performers. The article argues that school uniforms are sentimentally valuable in Japan as they represent narratives of youth before entering a tough and restricted adult life. School uniforms symbolize freedom and a future full of possibilities, growth, and hope. In this regard, the uniform-like costumes are attractive to both the youth who wear them, such as the students and popstars, and to the grown-ups, such as fans of pop stars, as the costumes remind them that life was once good in the “good old days.”

Abstract:
Soon after the coup d’état of 1762, which brought Catherine II, also known as Catherine the Great, to power, Vigilius Erichsen painted the equestrian portrait of the Empress in the Life Guards’ uniform. Catherine wore this uniform during the coup that dethroned her husband, Peter III. This article analyses this episode of cross-dressing in the context of Catherine's legitimation narrative. It further examines the uniform dresses that she wore for various regimental occasions. The dresses combined elements of traditional Russian garments and European fashion. The final section of the article studies the regional uniforms that Catherine II introduced for nobles, civil servants and their wives as part of her regional reforms after Pugachev's rebellion (1773–1775). I discuss these uniforms in the context of a revival of interest in the regions and local civil service, and in the context of national and transnational processes in Europe in the late eighteenth century.

AbstractIntroduction:Many emergency medical services (EMS) providers wear badges with their uniforms. This study was undertaken to determine whether emergency medical technicians (EMTs) who wear badges with their uniforms are more likely to be mistaken for law enforcement personnel than are those who do not wear badges.Hypothesis:Emergency medical services providers who wear badges are more likely to be mistaken for law enforcement personnel than are those who do not wear badges. Methods:High school students, college students, civic organizations, and church groups were shown slides of different uniforms and badges/insignia and asked to identify the person portrayed. Responses were categorized as “EMS,” “law enforcement,” or “other.” Frequency of responses for each uniform and insignia were compared with chi-square analysis.Results:Fifty-nine percent of the uniforms with badges were identified as law enforcement personnel. Only 5.5% of the uniforms with badges were identified as “EMS,” compared with 74% of the uniforms with a Star of Life (p<0.001).Conclusion:Individuals wearing uniforms with badges are more likely to be identified as law enforcement personnel than are EMS personnel. Emergency medical services providers who do not wish to be mistaken for law enforcement personnel should wear the Star of Life, not a badge, with their uniform.

Abstract:
The objective of this study was to identify the types of microorganisms present on uniforms of nurses, physicians, respiratory therapist, students, and housekeepers in intensive care units (ICUs). A convenience sampling was used to recruit the participants ( N = 115) who work at military hospital in Jordan. Environmental cultures ( N = 305) were taken from the participants who were nurses, physicians, students, respiratory therapists, and housekeepers. The number of participating nurses was 58 (50.43%). There were 24 types of microorganisms found on the participants’ uniforms. Staphylococcus epidermidis was found 59 times (61.3%) on the three areas of uniform culture. High level of contamination was found among all the participants, and it was the highest in physicians (85%) followed by nurse (79.3%) (χ2 = 24.87, p < .001). None of the participants’ characteristics have correlated significantly with the uniform contamination. High percentages of uniform’s contamination among all those who work in the ICUs were found.

Abstract:
V preteklosti je Slovenska vojska (SV) uporabljala različne načine zagotavljanja uniform in športne opreme. In the past, the Slovenian Armed Forces (SAF) used different methods of providing uniforms and sports equipment. The existing centralized uniform supply system, however, is not effective. The present paper presents the results of research, which focused on the causes for the inefficiency of the existing system. Despite a larger number of causes, we believe that there are two crucial ones: insufficient financial resources to purchase the necessary quantities of uniforms, and problems with the implementation of public procurement procedures. The reintroduction of commissa- ry services in the barracks would not solve the problem. Centralized uniform supply system in the SAF is the only rational solution and answer to the economic challen- ges. This article provides appropriate steps for the renovation of the uniform supply system in the SAF. The authors recommend the measures necessary to abolish the identified shortcomings and improve its effectiveness. We thus propose the introduc- tion of a debit points system for uniform allocation (already introduced in the police and showing positive results), the establishment of a mobile commissary service, the purchase of a 3D body scanner and the establishment of store or a chain of stores selling uniforms and military equipment. The article is mainly intended for the general public, but it provides the responsible authorities in the SAF with a starting point for the decision-making on the reform of the uniform-supply system.

Abstract:
Firefighters’ uniforms become contaminated with a wide range of chemicals, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). Laundering practices do not completely remove PAHs, OPFRs, and PBDEs from firefighting uniforms. This residual contamination of firefighting ensembles may be an ongoing source of exposure to firefighters. Firefighters are known to occasionally store firefighting ensembles in private vehicles. This study aimed to assess whether a firefighting uniform in a vehicle could act as a source for PAHs, OPFRs, and PBDEs to vehicle users. The shell layers of four laundered firefighting uniforms were sampled non-destructively. Three of these uniforms were heated in a laboratory oven (40, 60, and 80 °C) while the fourth was placed in a private vehicle on a summer day and off-gassing samples were collected from the uniforms. The off-gassing results for PAHs and OPFRs were relatively consistent between laboratory oven and the in-vehicle sample with ∑13 PAHs in off-gas ranging from 7800–23,000 ng uniform−1 day−1, while the ∑6 OPFRs off-gassed was an order of magnitude lower at 620–1600 ng uniform−1 day−1. The off-gassing results for PBDEs were much lower and less consistent between the experiments, which may reflect differences in uniform history. Currently, there is limited understanding of how PAHs, OPFRs, and PBDEs off-gassed from firefighting uniforms influence firefighter exposure to these chemicals. These findings suggest that firefighting ensembles off-gassing in private vehicles could be a relevant source of PAHs, OPFRs, and PBDEs that contributes to firefighters’ exposure and that this warrants further investigation.

Abstract:
At present, school uniforms are almost an indispensable part of the Chinese education system, and they have many functions as an external tool to assist schools in managing students. The original design of the school uniform is educational and domesticated. At a time when school uniform culture is prevalent, gender education has also begun to germinate in China. The physiology and psychology of high school students are still in a positive dynamic development, so the school uniform should not only protect the student's body but also be responsible for the budding gender cognition and psychology of the student. This paper uses observation, literature research, a case study and descriptive research to study the role of Shanghai high school uniforms in gender education through a case analysis of the design of school uniforms in Minhang Middle School in Shanghai. The results show that Shanghai school uniform design has both advantages and disadvantages, but there are generally major shortcomings in gender diversity, gender equality, and adolescent gender awareness. Shanghai high school uniforms should be more diverse to increase choice for sexual minorities, while weakening masculinity and femininity designs to reinforce students' awareness of gender equality.

This study analyzed the impact of uniform components on uniform satisfaction and departmental attachment among aviation service majors in the Gwangju and Jeonnam regions. The research examined the influence of three key components—symbolism, aesthetics, and functionality—on uniform satisfaction and departmental attachment. Data collection was conducted through an online survey from March 15 to May 17, 2024, with 178 valid samples analyzed. The results showed that the symbolism, aesthetics, and functionality of uniforms positively influenced uniform satisfaction, with symbolism having the most significant impact. Additionally, it was found that functionality and symbolism significantly affected departmental attachment. Uniform satisfaction also played a positive role in increasing departmental attachment. This study confirmed that enhancing the design, functionality, and symbolism of uniforms can boost students' sense of belonging and pride, thereby improving their attachment to the department. These findings reaffirm the importance of uniforms and suggest ways to strengthen university competitiveness.

Abstract:
In this paper, we will examine the principles of emotional design and design methods for uniforms. With the progress and development of society, the material function can no longer meet people's demand for products, but expand to the spiritual function, through the spiritual level of demand to integrate more emotions into the product, to meet the user's emotional experience. This research can expand the operational and emotional experience of uniforms, help users improve their work efficiency, and satisfy both their material and spiritual needs. This study takes preschool teachers as an example, preschool teachers as user subjects based on user experience and using user's emotional design methodology as support. Through literature research method, comparative research method, questionnaire survey and interview, the general job content and user needs of current Chinese preschool teachers were summarized, and the three layers of emotional design were corresponded to the uniform design, and the methodological model of emotional design of uniforms was expected to be obtained. This method model can provide new ideas and development directions for uniform design, help uniforms for specific groups of people to establish advantages in the market competition with serious homogenization, and provide reference for uniform design and selection.

Background: To determine Australian primary school principals’, teachers’, and parents’ attitudes to changing school uniform policies to allow students to wear sports uniforms every day and to assess associations between participant characteristics and their attitudes. A secondary aim was to identify principals’ and teachers’ perceived barriers to uniform changes. Methods: Cross-sectional surveys of principals, teachers, and parents of children in grades 2 to 3 (age 7–10 y) from 62 Australian primary schools (Oct 2017–Mar 2018) were undertaken. Mixed logistic regression analyses assessed the associations between participant characteristics and attitudes toward uniform changes. Results: In total, 73% of the principals (38/52) who responded reported that their school only allowed children to wear a sports uniform on sports days. Overall, 38% of the principals (18/47), 63% of the teachers (334/579), and 78% of the parents (965/1231) reported they would support a policy that allowed children to wear daily sports uniforms. The most commonly reported barrier was the perception that sports uniforms were not appropriate for formal occasions. Conclusions: Although the majority of the principals were not supportive of a change to a daily sports uniform, the majority of the teachers and parents were. Strategies to improve principal support may be required if broader adoption of physical activity–supporting uniforms is to be achieved.

Most academic attention regarding military influence on policing has focused on critiques of the military model of policing and police militarization and has neglected to examine the relationship between the two institutions and the transferability of attributes and skills from the military to police. Military service itself, when examined, has been treated as an undifferentiated concept that has not distinguished the effects of organizational structure, leadership, and myriad roles and experiences on policing. This study, using data from a survey of law enforcement officers throughout a New England state, compares and analyzes how law enforcement officers and supervisors with and without military background and with and without deployment experience differ in their perspectives regarding both the positive as well as negative aspects of combat deployment on policing. As such, it has significant implications for both the reintegration and recruitment of combat-deployed veterans into police organizations.

School uniforms are dynamic cultural forms and as such have meanings specific to the cultures in which they are worn. In New Zealand the history of their development is also a history of changing meanings specific to the New Zealand culture, connected to the status of children and the changing educational and social objectives of the education system. After a relatively slow development in New Zealand, school uniforms came into their own during the 1950s only to undergo radical change and diversification in the 1960s. During the 1970s school uniform as a practice reached a new extreme, allowing expressions of individualism and pluralism, values associated with a democratic ideal. Although such expressions threatened to overturn the sustaining principles of uniforms and uniformity, instead they reinforced uniforms as carriers and protectors of a powerful democratic ideal embedded in the New Zealand education system.

This study investigates the actual condition of wearing school uniforms based on item and dissatisfaction factors for male middle school boys who a period of rapid growth and a pandemic, and suggests a direction for improvement. It how school uniforms are washed at home, compares the differences with the suggested care label's laundry management method, and offers a reasonable laundry management technique. Methods: This study surveyed 200 middle school boys in the Cheongju area before and after the outbreak of COVID-19, and examined how the wearing of school uniforms and laundry management at home changed. Results: The items with changes in wearing frequency before and after the COVID-19 outbreak were pants, shirt, vest uniform, and comfortable uniform. As for the dissatisfaction factors by item, “activity” was the biggest dissatisfaction factor for jacket, pants, and shirt;, “fabric” for vest;, and “design” for gym uniform and comfortable uniform. The major difference between the method of washing school uniforms at home and that suggested on the care label was whether to use a washing machine or dryer. Regarding the washing method recommended on the care label, there were no school uniform items that could be washed in a dryer, but pants, gym uniform, and comfortable uniform could be washed in a washing machine. Conclusion/Implications: In this study, the proportion of using a washing machine and dryer for all items was not small. This study is expected to identify the school uniform needs of middle school boys who experienced the COVID-19 era for more than a year and to contribute to the basic data for design, material, and pattern development for wearer-centered school uniform production.

Abstract:
The study investigated the cultural and social dimensions of school uniform policies and their effects on student conduct in secondary schools in the United Kingdom. Motivated by the growing debate around the necessity and impact of school uniforms, the study sought to provide empirical evidence to inform policy decisions. A mixed-methods approach was used, combining qualitative interviews with educational professionals and parents, along with a quantitative survey administered to 500 students from five different secondary schools. Interviews focused on the perceptions of school uniforms within the context of culture and social norms, while the survey aimed to quantify the impact of uniforms on student behavior, such as attendance rates, incidences of bullying, and academic performance. The results revealed that 60% of students believed that wearing a uniform reduced instances of bullying, while 55% reported increased focus on academics. Attendance rates improved by 8% in schools with a uniform policy compared to those without. However, 40% of students indicated feeling a loss of personal expression and 25% of parents expressed concerns about the financial burden of purchasing uniforms. In conclusion, the study found that school uniform policies have a largely positive impact on student conduct, reducing bullying and improving attendance. However, issues around personal expression and financial burden cannot be overlooked. The study recommends that the schools should implement a subsidized program for low-income families to alleviate financial stress, and introducing free dress days to allow for personal expression. Furthermore, schools should involve parents, teachers, and students in discussions about any changes to uniform policies to ensure that multiple perspectives are considered. Abstract:
Military uniforms serve as an essential symbol for servicemen and an important image of national and military dignity. The current military uniform size system in Taiwan, which features various types of military uniforms based on the body sizes of servicemen, was formulated in 1986. This size classification system includes numerous groups and is too complex, leading to inventory overstock, increased inventory cost and warehouse staff workload, and a waste of national defense resources. This study used support vector clustering (SVC) with genetic algorithm (GA) models to improve the upper garment size system for uniforms. The SVC technique was employed to classify sizes, and the GA technique was used to determine optimal parameter values for the SVC model. This paper developed an upper garment size system that can increase the fit of uniforms to servicemen’s body sizes and reduce the number of size groups, thereby alleviating warehouse staff workload and inventory cost.

Full text
Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this study is to examine if consumers have substantially common color preferences in hospitality uniforms for destination brands. Employee uniforms with their dimensions of style, material and color are a crucial part of the coordinated brand message of a business or a destination; however, this has been a void in tourism and hospitality literature. Current visitors to Hong Kong were studied using intercept surveys in four different groups controlling for potential confounding factors. Although results reveal the common perception and preference for black-white-formal uniforms for Hong Kong’s hospitality industry across different treatment groups as well as different cultural groups, implications and discussions are provided as a call for further research in this venue of inquiry. Design/methodology/approach – This is a cross-sectional study using a site intercept survey with structured questionnaires on Chinese and international travelers in Hong Kong. Four different surveys were used as different treatments for four groups of respondents that were randomly assigned into each group. Each group was presented with a different default pair of male and female uniform pictures for the initial evaluation on the first page of the survey, followed by a list of uniforms with different colors and styles on the second page of the survey to select and evaluate their own pairs of male and female uniforms. Findings – Results revealed that consumers’ general favorite colors may not apply to their preferences for the employee uniforms for a destination they visit. Also, there were similarities in the favorite color and choice uniform color for the three general culture groups, such as Chinese, Asia-Pacific and Western consumers, included in the study. Besides, findings implied that Hong Kong may be a strong brand with a uniform color preference for hospitality uniforms for different consumer segments. Research limitations/implications – This study needs to be considered as an exploratory attempt to bring researchers’ attention to the several questions still to be answered by future research. The results and discussions provided in this study are beyond being robust or conclusive; insights about potential brand connotations with employee uniform colors need to be taken as potential leads for future studies because there is a need for further study in this area. Practical implications – The importance of hotel employee uniforms for quality hotel experience was the highest for the Chinese group, whereas it was the lowest for the Western group. Chinese and Asia-Pacific respondents placed more importance on uniforms as a cue for a quality hotel experience, which signal a higher level of involvement in visible cues in the consumption environment. Hence, hotels as well as destinations catering to these groups need to take their market segment preferences into consideration before making decisions about brand cues for their products. Originality/value – There is a lack of attention to the color aspect of service encounter in tourism and hospitality literature. Therefore, color needs attention from researchers as a new venue of research in tourism and hospitality, especially in the tourism destination context. This study is a spearhead to generate interest by intriguing questions for future attention from researchers.

Abstract:
Safety service patrols operate in more than 40 states and territories in the United States and each program operates with unique vehicles, uniforms, and equipment. Despite the variety of operator uniforms, legal and technical requirements at a national level dictate some choices, though color and style are largely at the discretion of states. Past research confirms that high-visibility safety apparel (HVSA) increases visibility. Biomotion markers on the joints further enhance visibility. The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices specifies that personnel working in the right-of-way wear a Class 2 or 3 HVSA. A survey of states where service patrols operate found the majority use high-visibility yellow-green over red-orange, and Class 3 garments are preferred over Class 2. In relation to the base uniform, there is a mixture of maintenance-type uniforms, polo shirts, and no uniform specification at all. In a survey of Florida service patrol program managers and operators, conveying professionalism, comfort, and safety were the most valued aspects of uniforms. Operators understand the need to care and maintain HVSA, but may overestimate their ability to be seen at night by between two and four times the actual distance they are visible. When given a choice, operators preferred dark trousers with biomotion markers, though they were roughly split between the polo shirt/vest option and the integrated HVSA shirt that does not require use of a vest. A uniform protective outerwear was favored by almost all operators, and a ball cap was the headwear of choice.

Abstract:
Background/Objectives: Taekwondo, which originated in Korea, is a traditional martial art and sport that uses hands and feet to attack and defend. Uniforms specialized for Poomsae, Kyorugi, and Kyukpa can facilitate the use of techniques for each sport and reduce the risk of injury; however, except for the Kyorugi uniform, they are not further subdivided. This study develops the Kyukpa uniforms as they provide ease of movement and protection from injury, thereby leading to the globalization and popularization of Taekwondo. Methods: To develop 30 designs of Kyukpa uniforms and present virtual clothing using 3D CLO for four of these selected by fashion and Taekwondo experts, in-depth interviews were conducted based on theoretical research. After analysis, the final two sets were selected and produced. After producing the final two sets, this research proceeded by checking the ease of movement through a movement test with a Taekwondo player. Results: The final two sets of Kyukpa uniforms were selected and designed. It was a good compromise between a strong contrast and trendiness expressed through differentiated design and color while still keeping tradition in mind the terms of external aspects. The fitting evaluation and movement evaluation ensured that the uniforms were comfortable for movement and techniques. Conclusion/Implications: This study proposes a design approach that combines athleticism and reimagining the uniforms for each Taekwondo event. By specializing in Kyukpa uniforms with functionality, modern sophistication, and the symbolic elements of Taekwondo, we can significantly contribute to the global promotion and widespread adoption of this form of martial art.

Abstract:
Purpose – The aim of this study is to investigate wearing comfort of summer work uniforms judged by construction workers. Design/methodology/approach – A total of 189 male construction workers participated in a series of wear trials and questionnaire surveys in the summer of 2014. They were asked to randomly wear two types of work uniforms (i.e. uniforms A and B) in the two-day field survey and the subjective attributes of these uniforms were assessed. Three analytical techniques, namely, multiple regression, artificial neural network and fuzzy logic were used to predict wearing comfort affected by the six subjective sensations. Findings – The results revealed that fuzzy logic was a robust and practical tool for predicting wearing comfort in terms of better prediction performance and more interpretable results than the other models. Pressure attributes were further found to exert a greater effect than thermal–wet attributes on wearing comfort. Overall, the use of uniform B exhibited profound benefits on wearing comfort because it kept workers cooler, drier and more comfortable with less work performance interference than wearing uniform A. Originality/value – The findings provide a fresh insight into construction workers’ needs for work clothes, which further facilitates the improvement in the clothing tailor-made design and the enhancement of the well-being of workers.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the role of school discipline in achieving academic performance. The study aims to clarify the role of permissive vis-à-vis authoritative teaching styles with an overarching hypothesis that better discipline leads to better academic performance. The authors also probe whether uniformed students have better discipline. Design/methodology/approach – The authors analyse Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s Programme for International Student Assessment data on school discipline dimensions: students listening well, noise levels, teacher waiting time, students working well, class start time. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) with post hoc analysis on five geographic groups established by Baumann and Winzar (2016) was applied to test for geographic differences (Europe, Americas, Far East Asia, Rest of Asia, Anglo-Saxon cluster) in school discipline. ANOVA was further used to test for school discipline and academic performance. Third, t-tests on five discipline dimensions were run to test for differences between students who wear uniforms and those who do not. Findings – The results demonstrate differences in school discipline across five geographic clusters, with East Asia leading the way. The authors demonstrate significant differences in discipline for low, medium and high performing students. Peak-performing students have the highest level of discipline. Students wearing a uniform listen better with lower teacher waiting times. Originality/value – Students peak perform when teachers create a disciplined atmosphere where students listen to teachers, where noise levels in the classroom are low and they do not have to wait to start class and teach. Good discipline allows students to work well and this ultimately leads to better academic performance. Uniforms contribute to better discipline in everyday school operations. The findings support that in general, implementing school uniforms at schools might enhance discipline and allow for better learning. The authors recommend keeping uniforms where they are already used and to consider introducing uniforms where they are not yet common.

This essay uses Žižek's concept of fantasy to complicate that perception and articulate the deeper relevance of Andersen's tale. Even as the second volume of Wilhelm's memoirs reveals the extent to which the kaiser's sense of self was constitutively enmeshed in fantasies about the meaning of uniforms, this study indicates that Wilhelm's many critics were also guided by their own fantasies.

Philip Robins contends that Turkish foreign policy has faced four challengesin four distinct periods of its history: (1) consolidating the emergentTurkish Republic through external recognition (1930s), (2) remainingneutral during the Second World War (1940s), (3) confronting thechallenge of Soviet expansionism (the cold war era), and (4) respondingto the end of bipolarity (post-cold war era). Robins examines these foreignpolicy issues in the last period. The main thesis of this work is threefold: First, Turkey is a status quopower in the way that its foreign policy elites have fastened their thinkingand practice to the framework of “the sanctity of borders, of states, ofmultilateral institutions and of norms of conduct, even when it becameclear that systemic changes had rendered some of these continuities nolonger tenable” (p. 6). Second, Turkey continues to be firmly orientedwestwards in terms of its foreign relations, which are characterized by itsstrong commitment to NATO as well as its desire to join the EuropeanUnion (EU). Finally, Turkish foreign policy has been characterized moreby “caution than daring,” quoting Malik Mufti. Despite the increase in itspower relative to its neighbors, Turkey has avoided an interventionist foreignpolicy by emphasizing the formation of multilateral frameworks forconflict resolution.Robins defends these arguments by analyzing the international systemicand domestic politics context in which Turkish foreign policy is ...

AbstractObjectiveTo compare bacterial contamination of military-approved uniforms and hospital-provided scrubs donned by nursing staff in an inpatient setting.DesignRandomized experimental crossover study.SettingLarge academic military medical center.MethodsInpatient units were randomized to predetermine the order of uniform sampling. Participants included nursing staff who provided direct patient care across 7 eligible inpatient units. Sampling of 6 designated sites on the uniform was completed on arrival to work, at ~4 hours into their shift, and at the 8-hour time point, for a total of 18 samples. Sampling of each participant occurred on 2 separate occasions, once in a military-approved uniform, and once in hospital-provided scrubs. After 24 hours of incubation, a colony-counting machine was used to calculate the total colony-forming units (CFU) of the sample.ResultsAcross all time points, military-approved uniforms demonstrated a 2-fold bacterial increase at the abdominal site and 3-fold increases at the sleeve cuff and waist pocket regions compared to the same regions on hospital-provided scrubs.ConclusionNurses should be aware that bacteria are present at much higher levels on their personal military uniforms compared to hospital-provided scrubs. Additional research is needed to determine whether these findings are a function of wear, laundering, or environmental factors. Nurses should adhere to daily uniform washing to reduce bacterial load and minimize risk of nosocomial infections to the patients they care for.

This paper forwards a theory of silhouetting in relation to technological augmentation in U.S. Military uniforms and suggests that the increasing utilization of metamaterials, nanotechnology, and surveillance technologies operates under a rhetoric of invisibility that complicates the technologies’ visible destruction. Methodologically, the paper attends to three general technological developments in the evolution of the U.S. Army uniform: the design of the new Army Combat Uniform (ACU); the technological advances in the uniform, including embedded wearables, biometric identification devices, and 3D combat enhancement systems; and the bio-networking, GPS, and digital communication arrays that physically link digital uniforms to a larger geopolitical network of U.S. military strategy and surveillance. Throughout, the work traces the aforementioned theory of silhouetting in relation to select sociopolitical consequences of linking digitally enhanced soldiers into a transnational grid of surveillance.

Abstract:
Purpose – The aim of this study is to advance the understanding of Hong Kong’s housekeeping culture by examining how employee uniforms and the image they project influence job satisfaction amongst the housekeeping department employees of a luxury five-star Hotel in Hong Kong, China. Design – Using a purposive sampling method, ten semi-structured interviews were conducted with the housekeeping staff of a luxury five-star Hotel in Hong Kong. Content analysis was conducted to identify data patterns. Findings – Findings categorized four determinants of uniform influencing job satisfaction: fit to wearer, appropriate materials, color and design, and hotel brand image. The findings confirm that staff uniforms play an important role in demonstrating the hotel’s brand identity, improving job satisfaction, operational efficiency, and staff-management relationships. Apart from the aesthetic design, management should put operational practicality and functionality into account by getting employees to participate when launching and implementing any change initiatives on staff uniforms. Communication and mutual understanding between management and employees are imperative in understanding each other’s concerns. Originality of the research – Using a qualitative approach, the results offered an empirical basis to guide hotel management and administrators in making decisions about uniforms.

This article commemorates the fiftieth anniversary of the Pittsburgh Pirates, when debuting in Three Rivers Stadium fifty years ago July 16, 1970, making a fashion statement in their new uniforms that would change the look of the game as much as the multi-purpose stadiums and artificial surface fields Major Leaguers played on. Their white double-knit uniforms would spark a revolution in uniform design soon to be adopted by all the Major League teams within a couple years. Their uniform’s nylon-cotton blend fabric changed the look of Major League Baseball at a time when advancements in textile technology combined with a freer spirit in graphics experimentation allowed for bold—and sometimes wild—fashion designs not seen before in professional sports. Abstract:
This study explores the use of pseudo-nostalgic designs in sport marketing, examining consumer response to the National Hockey League’s 2020‒2021 Reverse Retro uniform campaign. By investigating user response to the twelve teams’ Reverse Retro sweater release and promotion on Twitter, the study endeavors to explore the extent to which pseudo-nostalgic designs elicit nostalgic sentiment and the degree to which such nostalgia may impact upon individuals’ perceptions of uniform designs. The findings of the research suggest that while pseudo-nostalgic uniforms can inspire feelings of nostalgia, the symbolic connections manifested within sporting uniforms are cocreated between teams and fans and the inclusion of nostalgic cues should be reflective of fans’ own sense of nostalgia, not imposed upon them by such designs.
