Abstract:
The study aimed at examining the factors that affect student-teachers wearing of school uniforms in the Colleges of Education with focus on selected Colleges of Education in the Northern Region of Ghana. The study employed a case study design. The study’s population was level 100, 200, 300 student- teachers of Bagabaga College of Education and Tamale College of Education with an estimated student population of about 3,800. Out of the population, random sampling technique was used to sample 200 student- teachers from the two colleges. Questionnaire was used as the main instrument to collect data on the research question and supported by observation. The findings from the study showed that student- teachers agreed to some of the factors that influence the disinterest in wearing school uniforms among colleges of education students, inter alia, uniforms promote tagging and labelling, uniforms promote misidentification and impersonation, uniforms do not improve performance, uniforms may emphasize the existence of inequalities, uniform wearing is uncomfortable, Uniform is unstylish, Uniform do not respect culture, Uniform promotes conformity. Furthermore, student teachers agreed to the fact that uniform promotes standard, unity, make student- teachers from all social and economic background the same and also do away with bulling and gang activities in the colleges of education. Based on the findings, it was recommended that there should be orientation for student- teachers to educate them on the uniform policy at the colleges of education each academic year and to let the student- teachers know that school uniform is not meant to belittle them as tertiary students. College management should be flexible in the implementation of the uniform policies at the colleges of education. If a uniform policy is implemented, the effectiveness of such policy should be evaluated.

Abstract In Japan school uniforms have been used for role-playing by those other than cosplayers. In order to understand this social discourse, this article examines the chronological development of Japanese school uniforms and then discusses how and why imitation school uniforms have been adopted and adapted by students at uniform-free schools as well as by female J-pop performers. The article argues that school uniforms are sentimentally valuable in Japan as they represent narratives of youth before entering a tough and restricted adult life. School uniforms symbolize freedom and a future full of possibilities, growth, and hope. In this regard, the uniform-like costumes are attractive to both the youth who wear them, such as the students and popstars, and to the grown-ups, such as fans of pop stars, as the costumes remind them that life was once good in the “good old days.”

Abstract:
Soon after the coup d’état of 1762, which brought Catherine II, also known as Catherine the Great, to power, Vigilius Erichsen painted the equestrian portrait of the Empress in the Life Guards’ uniform. Catherine wore this uniform during the coup that dethroned her husband, Peter III. This article analyses this episode of cross-dressing in the context of Catherine's legitimation narrative. It further examines the uniform dresses that she wore for various regimental occasions. The dresses combined elements of traditional Russian garments and European fashion. The final section of the article studies the regional uniforms that Catherine II introduced for nobles, civil servants and their wives as part of her regional reforms after Pugachev's rebellion (1773–1775). I discuss these uniforms in the context of a revival of interest in the regions and local civil service, and in the context of national and transnational processes in Europe in the late eighteenth century.

AbstractIntroduction:Many emergency medical services (EMS) providers wear badges with their uniforms. This study was undertaken to determine whether emergency medical technicians (EMTs) who wear badges with their uniforms are more likely to be mistaken for law enforcement personnel than are those who do not wear badges.Hypothesis:Emergency medical services providers who wear badges are more likely to be mistaken for law enforcement personnel than are those who do not wear badges. Methods:High school students, college students, civic organizations, and church groups were shown slides of different uniforms and badges/insignia and asked to identify the person portrayed. Responses were categorized as “EMS,” “law enforcement,” or “other.” Frequency of responses for each uniform and insignia were compared with chi-square analysis.Results:Fifty-nine percent of the uniforms with badges were identified as law enforcement personnel. Only 5.5% of the uniforms with badges were identified as “EMS,” compared with 74% of the uniforms with a Star of Life (p<0.001).Conclusion:Individuals wearing uniforms with badges are more likely to be identified as law enforcement personnel than are EMS personnel. Emergency medical services providers who do not wish to be mistaken for law enforcement personnel should wear the Star of Life, not a badge, with their uniform.

Abstract:
The objective of this study was to identify the types of microorganisms present on uniforms of nurses, physicians, respiratory therapist, students, and housekeepers in intensive care units (ICUs). A convenience sampling was used to recruit the participants ( N = 115) who work at military hospital in Jordan. Environmental cultures ( N = 305) were taken from the participants who were nurses, physicians, students, respiratory therapists, and housekeepers. The number of participating nurses was 58 (50.43%). There were 24 types of microorganisms found on the participants’ uniforms. Staphylococcus epidermidis was found 59 times (61.3%) on the three areas of uniform culture. High level of contamination was found among all the participants, and it was the highest in physicians (85%) followed by nurse (79.3%) (χ2 = 24.87, p < .001). None of the participants’ characteristics have correlated significantly with the uniform contamination. High percentages of uniform’s contamination among all those who work in the ICUs were found.

Abstract:
V preteklosti je Slovenska vojska (SV) uporabljala različne načine zagotavljanja uniform in športne opreme. In the past, the Slovenian Armed Forces (SAF) used different methods of providing uniforms and sports equipment. The existing centralized uniform supply system, however, is not effective. The present paper presents the results of research, which focused on the causes for the inefficiency of the existing system. Despite a larger number of causes, we believe that there are two crucial ones: insufficient financial resources to purchase the necessary quantities of uniforms, and problems with the implementation of public procurement procedures. The reintroduction of commissa- ry services in the barracks would not solve the problem. Centralized uniform supply system in the SAF is the only rational solution and answer to the economic challen- ges. This article provides appropriate steps for the renovation of the uniform supply system in the SAF. The authors recommend the measures necessary to abolish the identified shortcomings and improve its effectiveness. We thus propose the introduc- tion of a debit points system for uniform allocation (already introduced in the police and showing positive results), the establishment of a mobile commissary service, the purchase of a 3D body scanner and the establishment of store or a chain of stores selling uniforms and military equipment. The article is mainly intended for the general public, but it provides the responsible authorities in the SAF with a starting point for the decision-making on the reform of the uniform-supply system.

Abstract:
Firefighters’ uniforms become contaminated with a wide range of chemicals, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). Laundering practices do not completely remove PAHs, OPFRs, and PBDEs from firefighting uniforms. This residual contamination of firefighting ensembles may be an ongoing source of exposure to firefighters. Firefighters are known to occasionally store firefighting ensembles in private vehicles. This study aimed to assess whether a firefighting uniform in a vehicle could act as a source for PAHs, OPFRs, and PBDEs to vehicle users. The shell layers of four laundered firefighting uniforms were sampled non-destructively. Three of these uniforms were heated in a laboratory oven (40, 60, and 80 °C) while the fourth was placed in a private vehicle on a summer day and off-gassing samples were collected from the uniforms. The off-gassing results for PAHs and OPFRs were relatively consistent between laboratory oven and the in-vehicle sample with ∑13 PAHs in off-gas ranging from 7800–23,000 ng uniform−1 day−1, while the ∑6 OPFRs off-gassed was an order of magnitude lower at 620–1600 ng uniform−1 day−1. The off-gassing results for PBDEs were much lower and less consistent between the experiments, which may reflect differences in uniform history. Currently, there is limited understanding of how PAHs, OPFRs, and PBDEs off-gassed from firefighting uniforms influence firefighter exposure to these chemicals. These findings suggest that firefighting ensembles off-gassing in private vehicles could be a relevant source of PAHs, OPFRs, and PBDEs that contributes to firefighters’ exposure and that this warrants further investigation.

The historic uniform of the Independence Dragons was established by the Brazilian Army and it is worn in the contemporary times. Inserted into the legislation by means of an Annex, it is subject to the general rules regarding uniforms as well as to its own, which are, in a way, and because of its characteristics of shared clothing, divergent and more permissive. This gives this uniform special features that, combined with diacritical and symbolic functions found within it, signal to a proper regime of visualities in the military environment. Moreover, the definition of a uniform can have different meanings according to the place from where it is seen. Thus, received by the Visual Culture Studies, this uniform can reveal itself without any fear, show its hidden faces and establish an open, frank and interdisciplinary dialog in order to suspend beliefs and to have a fair battle in the Arena.

Abstract:
Many companies today are using some form of uniforms for employees. This research is an exploration of the role of uniforms in contributing to the embedding and transmitting of organizational culture. Culture is the experiences and common learning of the organization that results in shared values and beliefs. According to Schein (1985: 14) culture has three levels, namely: artifacts, values, and basic underlying assumptions. The first level of the culture consists of the physical constructs of the organization, and therefore includes the uniforms, which is the focus of this study. Schein (1985: 223) further proposes that culture can be embedded and transmitted through various mechanisms. The research was conducted in the constructivist paradigm, at a tertiary institution of higher learning in Eastern Cape, South Africa. To ensure triangulation, three sources of data were used, namely: documentation; observation; and both individual and focus group interviews. The researcher argues that uniforms played a role in the embedding of the sample organization’s three levels of culture, which were expressed in terms of Hofstede’s (1991: 07) culture dimensions. Firstly, the use of the different uniforms by different groups, as well as the ranking indicated by the uniforms, played a role in embedding the high power distance culture. Secondly, the symbolism of security portrayed by the uniform played a role in embedding the high uncertainty avoidance culture. Thirdly, it was found that the uniform created unity amongst groups, resulting in greater expression of collectivism. Fourthly, the use of sensible and practical uniforms plays a role in embedding the feminine culture where competitiveness is avoided and relationships are nurtured. Lastly, the uniform plays a possible role in transforming the culture from short-term to a long-term orientation that focuses on the future.

Abstract:
The present doctoral thesis in Education entitled "What clothes should I wear? Beautification and Composition of Consumption in Children’s School Uniforms", following the research line in Education, Sexuality and Gender Relations (PPGEDU) at the College of Education (FACED) at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) focuses on the production of the female child’s gender identities in school, which are characterized by the process of pedophilization as a contemporary social practice. The study aims to answer the following question, although temporarily: How can the use of school uniforms interfere in the way the girls are investing in their bodies, the aesthetic and body patterns of beautification and consumption, which are strongly publicized in our society and spread in the school formation of their gender identities? Based on the Gender Studies and Cultural Studies in Education as theoreticalmethodological referential, some semi-structured interviews were carried out with the children and the school staff in order to collect data. Written observations were also made during the children’s free moments at school over a period of approximately six months. The study raised the understanding that the practices of composition concerning schoolchildren uniforms, glamorously produced and promoted by the children themselves, establish a consistent relationship between consumption and body beautification, reinforcing two recurring processes in such practices: belonging and authorized eroticization. In this school practice it was also possible to realize the reinforcement of discourses and the contemporary cultural ad social representations in the importance of the massive investment, since childhood, in the bodies, the image and the appearance, reinforcing the adhesion of girls in the production/composition of their gender identities.

Applying the ratio-of-uniforms method for generating random variates results in very efficient, fast and easy to implement algorithms. However parameters for every particular type of density must be precalculated analytically. In this paper we show, that the ratio-of-uniforms method is also useful for the design of a black-box algorithm suitable for a large class of distributions, including all with log-concave densities. Using polygonal envelopes and squeezes results in an algorithm that is extremely fast. In opposition to any other ratio-of-uniforms algorithm the expected number of uniform random numbers is less than two. Furthermore we show that this method is in some sense equivalent to transformed density rejection. (author's abstract)

Abstract:
Approximately half of the public schools in the United States require uniforms or a formal dress policy and many are intended to reduce discipline problems and improve school climate. A suburban school district in Georgia recognized that there was an increase in discipline problems in their schools that affected the school climate. In an effort to promote school safety and improve climate, stakeholders at a district campus adopted a uniform policy. The purpose of this survey study was to examine the differences in perceived school climate between a district campus with a uniform policy and a similar campus with no uniform policy. The theoretical framework of this study was based on Maslow's hierarchy of needs. The American School Climate Survey-Teacher Version was sent electronically to all teachers from the 2 study sites. The final sample included 62 respondents, 32 from the school with uniforms and 30 from the school without uniforms. Mann-Whitney tests were used to test for differences in survey responses between the 2 groups. The climate of the school that required uniforms was rated significantly higher on 14 of the 25 survey items, including safety, reduced bullying, and improved student learning. There were no differences between group scores for the remaining survey items. Implications for positive social change include providing the findings to the local site as an initial step in investigating school climate and the possible impact of school uniforms. With increased information, the study district can make more informed decisions regarding the use of school uniforms, which might improve safety, reduce bullying, and improve student learning in the district.

Abstract:
Schools that implement a school uniform policy are on the rise (Musu-Gillette, Zhang, Wang, Zhang & Oudekerk, 2017). About 74% of these schools have a high population of low socioeconomic status students (Musu-Gillette et al., 2017) with about 75% or more qualifying for free or reduced lunch. The purpose of this study was to examine any relationships between students' perceptions of the effects of school uniforms and student socioeconomic status. In a charter school, a survey was completed by students to gather perception information and a separate survey by parents to gather socioeconomic status information. Hypotheses were tested using descriptive statistics and multiple regression models. Data were gathered from 184 students in grades 3 through 8. Examining individual survey items revealed older students were more likely to report that school uniforms help to reduce bullying and teasing. Another statistically significant difference was that some students of high socioeconomic status reported that uniforms help reduce arguments with parents about clothing (t(182) = 2.66, p<.01). Student responses on 10 survey items were grouped into one factor called School Climate, reflecting student perceptions on how uniforms affect the school's climate. Analyses revealed no significant relationships between the School Climate factor and socioeconomic status. However, Hispanic students reported a significantly more positive response overall than non-Hispanic students. These findings suggest students of various socioeconomic status perceive school uniforms similarly, but older students could be more likely to associate uniforms with a reduction in bullying. More research needs to be done in charter schools as little research has been done on school uniforms in charter schools, and among Hispanic students because the participation of Hispanic students was relatively low.

Abstract:
A researcher at the University of Aberdeen has found that almost 20% (n=70) of secondary schools in Scotland specify an exclusive supplier for school uniform. The research shows that almost every secondary school has a compulsory uniform (over 96%). Shanks, Rachel. School Clothing Grant in Scotland: Policy Briefing. University of Aberdeen, August 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.57064/2164/19088.

Full text
Abstract:
A researcher at the University of Aberdeen has found that almost 20% (n=70) of secondary schools in Scotland specify an exclusive supplier for school uniform. The research shows that almost every secondary school has a compulsory uniform (over 96%). Of the 343 schools with a compulsory uniform, 320 uniforms include a school tie, 235 include a blazer and 200 schools ban jeans. While the Scottish Government has called for the automatic payment of benefits such as the national minimum clothing grant , only 6 local authorities make automatic awards of this grant when families are applying for other benefits. Nine local authorities roll over the school clothing grant into the next school year without requiring families to re-apply and 1 local authority has both automatic grants and rollover of school clothing grant in place.
