Full textBackground: World Health Organization, WHO lists intimate partner violence as a global health problem affecting about a third of women around the world. Despite that a lot of research show that women in the ages of 16-24 are particularly vulnerable of being exposed to intimate partner violence, intimate partner violence that occur in adolescent relationships is relatively unattended in Sweden. Further research has shown that adolescent’s often lack knowledge about what constitutes appropriate and abusive behaviors in an intimate relationship. Aim: The aim of the study was to quantitatively examine the prevalence of dating violence among adolescent’s and by focus groups examine young girls attitudes towards dating violence among adolescent’s. Method: In order to examine prevalence of dating violence among adolescent’s cross-sectional data from a national survey about violence against children was used. To examine the young girl’s attitudes towards dating violence among adolescents a qualitative approach was used and eight girls aged 15-16 was interviewed using three focus groups. The interviews were recorded, transcribed and later analyzed using a qualitative content analysis. Results: The results from the quantitative analysis showed that it is more common that girls are victims and perpetrators of physical violence in their intimate relationships. Totally 2,5 percent of the girls in the study had been hit by a partner and 1,1 percent of the girls reported that they had used physical violence against a partner. Corresponding numbers regarding the boys were 0,9 and 0,2 percent. The results also showed that girls to a greater extent are exposed to sexual and physical violence requiring health care in their intimate relationships than boys. The qualitative content analysis resulted in two categories: “Attitude and definition” and “Possibilities and challenger for support”. The category “Attitude and definition” raises the young girl’s definitions of different types of violence and which situations they consider to be mitigating for using violence in a relationship. The category “Possibilities and challenges for support” raise different arenas young girl’s reach for in order to get support if they feel bad in their relationships and also different challenges that prevent help searching from a destructive relationship.

Full textThis study aims to examine if individuals feel that increased divorce rates impact their attitude towards long-term relationships. The empirical data was collected through semi-structured interviews with four young women who shared their thoughts and feelings about marriage, relationships and divorces. The study is based on theories about reflexive modernity and individualization (see Beck, Beck-Gernsheim and Giddens). The empirical data is also analyzed by Giddens’ theory of the pure relationship and his theory about the ontological security. The theory of socialization is also used along with Bourdieu’s concept of habitus. The result of the study shows that individuals with divorced parents are aware of the increased divorce rates in society and that it affects their attitude to long-term relationships. This can be explained primarily by using the theory of socialization and the concept of habitus. The respondent in the study whose parents still lived together considered herself protected from the increased divorce rates and experienced therefore that this did not affect her attitude to long-term relationships. The more thorough analysis nevertheless shows that all respondents are affected by the increased divorce rates in society, even if the respondent with non-divorced parents was not aware of it herself. The increased individualism and modern societies reflexive nature can explain this. This result appeared even though the study in advance did not intend to distinguish between individuals who have been through a parental divorce and individuals who have not.

Full textThe purpose of this study is to receive knowledge of how social workers work, and want to work, with dating violence among youth in couple relationships. Furthermore, the purpose is to highlight this problem area and lay a foundation for further research in the field of dating violence. The study is qualitative in nature and the method used is individual interviews with six social workers who work with young people in different fields of work in social services. All data has been analyzed based on a new institutional organizational theoretical perspective and discretion. The result of the study indicates that social workers do not work implicit with dating violence. Social workers who get in contact with youths who are exposed to, or exposes their partner to, dating violence does not separate dating violence from violence in adult relationships or violence against children. The social workers interviewed requests more organizational support when it comes to paying attention to dating violence as well as obtaining a greater knowledge on the subject.

Full textThe present study examined differences in attitudes between young men and women regarding partner violence and its severity. The study examined whether the participants’ gender and the sex of fictitious victim, as well as whether being in a partnership had an impact in the participants’ attitudes. The study was conducted through a questionnaire with a vignette along with the ‘Opinion of Domestic Violence Scale’. This was completed by 504 undergraduates between the ages of 19-28 (M= 22,6, SD= 2,2) at a university located in a medium-sized city in Sweden. A total of 312 women (M= 22,3, SD= 2,2) and 192 men 192 (M= 23,2, SD=2,2) participated. The results showed a difference between men and women, where the female participants reported higher mean scores, indicating that women find partner violence more severe. Women who were in a relationship at the time, reported that partner violence against a woman was less severe. The results were discussed on the basis of previous research along with the concept of the ‘Ideal Victim’. The conclusion was that there was a difference between men and women's attitudes regarding partner violence, where women viewed it as more severe
