Full textI begin by giving reasons to accept the block-universe view, the strongly supported by physics view that we live in a four-dimensional world. According to it, the past and the future are as real as the present. But then, it seems that the future is determined in the sense that what will be the case will necessarily be the case. In the dissertation, I want to examine whether we have to accept this consequence. I show that we do not have to bite the bullet: the future might be both real and contingent. I first start to consider modal realism (possible futures are real) as a possible solution. However, I propose then another account, actualist (positing the reality of only one possible world: the space-time we live in). This solution relies on a conventionalist theory about metaphysical modality. It states that modal modality is purely conventional. In combination with a realist interpretation of natural modality (causal and/or nomological), this framework allows me to propose that the future is conventionally closed and naturally contingent. In this view, the necessity of the future holds in virtue of linguistic conventions and then is conventionally necessary. But this is a distinct phenomenon from the natural contingency of the future: the future is naturally contingent because there are mind-independent probabilistic relations holding between the present and the future. This solution has strong consequences: most importantly, an anti-realist view about ordinary objects and physical particles. I end up by presenting and arguing in favor of the general image of the world that comes out from these views

Full textThe main purpose of the thesis is to identify and fill some gaps that are regularly found in the analysis of the Platonic concept of ἐξαίφνης. The word ἐξαίφνης, which appears 36 times in the Platonic dialogues, has primarily been examined and discussed in relation to what is said in Parmenides and, more rarely, in Symposium, Republic and Seventh Letter. However, as is known, the word is also found in Gorgias, Cratylus, Theaetetus, Statesman and Laws. Moreover, it is worth noting that a history of criticism about the concept of ἐξαίφνης has never been provided, mainly due to the chronological and interpretive difficulties relating to Parmenides. This absence brought on a fragmentation and discontinuity in the study of the concept and it often prompted specialists to see in this notion a secondary or imprecise aspect of the Platonic theory. Regardless of the correctness of interpretations that have been proposed over the centuries, my work clearly shows that all these exegeses share two fundamental limits: the former is a necessarily partial analysis, almost exclusively based on what is written in Parmenides, the latter is the absence of a historical perspective

Full textOver the past decade, an important effort has been made in the field of low dimensional electronic conductors towards single electron electronics with the goal to gain full control of the phase of a single electron in a solid-state system. A particular appealing idea is to use a single flying electron itself to carry and manipulate the quantum information, the so-called solid state flying qubit. On demand single electron injection into such a ballistic two-dimensional electron system can be realized by employing the recently developed single electron source based on sub-nanosecond lorentzian voltage pulses. Such a source could also be used to reveal interesting new physics. When a short voltage pulse is injected in an electronic interferometer, novel interference effects are expected due to the interference of the pulse with the surrounding Fermi sea. For the realization of such experiments it is important to know with high accuracy the propagation velocity of the electron wave packet created by the pulse. In this thesis, we present time resolved measurements of a short voltage pulse (<100 ps) injected into a 1D quantum wire formed in a two-dimensional electron gas and determine its propagation speed. We show that the voltage pulse propagates much faster than the Fermi velocity of a non-interacting system. The propagation speed is enhanced due to electron interactions within the quantum wire. For a quantum wire containing a large number of modes, the measured propagation velocity agrees very well with the 2D plasmon velocity for a gated two-dimensional electron gas. Increasing the confinement potential allows to control the strength of the electron interactions and hence the propagation speed. We then have studied an electronic two-path interferometer based on two tunnel-coupled wires. Our preliminary measurements show a signature that can be attributed to the coherent tunneling of the electrons injected into this system. In the near future, this system could be used to reveal these new striking effects due to the interaction of the voltage pulse with the Fermi sea

Full textThe goal of this research is to define a time-triggered language for modeling real-time systems and to provide the conditions for their schedulability under Earliest Deadline First (EDF). Time-triggered languages separate the functional part of applications from their timing definition. These languages permit to model the real-time system temporal behavior by assigning system activities to particular time instants. We propose a new time-triggered framework, Extended Timing Definition Language (E-TDL), that enhances the basic task model used in Giotto and TDL while keeping compositional and modular structure brought by the latter. An E-TDL task is characterized by: an offset, a worst case execution time, a Logical Execution Time (a time interval between task release and its termination) and a period. The schedulability analysis of the system based on this new task model should be, in particular for EDF, investigated. We develop, on the concept of the processor demand criterion, conditions for the feasibility of an E-TDL system running on a single CPU under EDF. A necessary and sufficient condition is obtained by considering the global schedules that are made up of execution traces occurring at the same time in distinct modules that are able to switch their modes at predefined instants. We estimate a maximal length of the interval on which the schedulability condition must be checked. A tool suite performing the schedulability analysis of the E-TDL systems is developed

Full textThe phenomenon of waiting for services is a commonplace everyday aspect of consumer life. This doctoral thesis examines waiting in services marketing from the consumer viewpoint. It employs a qualitative methodology that facilitates an in-depth approach to the examination of waiting experiences in the natural setting consumer life. This approach leads to a holistic examination of waiting, which integrates the elements that may influence consumer behaviour in waiting situations. These elements refer to previous waiting experiences, to personal traits, to the strategies employed to reduce the waiting time, to situational factors and to the implications of the wait for the organisation and the company.

Full textIn this thesis, we study several implementation methods of the QoS (Quality of Service) in an IP network. As a first step, we model outgoing/entering flows of a mobile wireless network. We model the inter arrival law of the aggregation of the flows entering the UTRAN (UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network) network, the UMTS (Mobile Universal Telecommunication Service) access network. We determine also the characterizing law of the inter arrival aggregated traffic leaving a WiFi (Wireless Fidelity) network, using the 802. 11 protocol. For these two networks, we propose various models of aggregation of voice, Web, file transfer flow and a multiplexing of these various classes. In a second step, we develop the equations determining the stationary probabilities of a queue implementing a GPS (Generalised Processor Sharing) scheduler with three classes of services. By using the DiffServ mechanism to differentiate flows, we measure the QoS at the output of a single queue or a network using WRR (Weighted Round Robin), one of the algorithms approximating GPS. We then plot the various curves of delays and loss probabilities observed at the output of this queue according to weight and the load created by each class. In a third step, we develop a method of dynamic adaptation of the routing. We propose it in order to solve the problem with the variations of the delay distribution on the links forming the end to end path. This mechanism is based on network tomography techniques in order to estimate the delay distribution on the various sections of the paths observed

Full textWhere is working time going? This thesis resumes and attempts to extend this query/question formulated almost twenty years ago.Based on a quantitative and qualitative study of negotiated time-saving accounts, and on employees’ strategies for social times articulation, this PhD thesis gives substance to the notion of desynchronization. Assuming that industrialization has led to a synchronization of professional and social times, it seeks to show that this movement has been reversed. It describes this phenomenon under construction, which allows individual configurations and generalizes time bargaining. It assesses class and gender equality; it exposes the opportunities for time articulation; it qualifies the risks of isolation and reveals the consequences for social ties. In seeking to shed light on the phenomenon of desynchronization, this thesis questions the advent of a new temporal order: the market of times

Full textThe opportunity I had to analyse socially oriented musical practice in Venezuela (El Sistema) and Scotland rose the question of time perception. From a music teacher's and performer's perspective, the matter seemed to be essential. Thus, from an ethical and political angle, I formulate the hypothesis that musical practice can influence our relation to time and to the world. I analyse different forms of temporality (or temporalisation) as developed by thinkers (philosophers, historians, sociologists, physicists...) who tried to think outside of the frame of time as an urgency, as it is imposed by capitalist society. These thinkers advocate anticipation and imagination, rather than the perpetual planification of time that leaves very little space, if any at all, to individuation.I suppose that musical practice, if considered this way, allows the expression of individual rhythms (idiorrhythmy). It also helps shaping another relation to time and, consequently, to learning, to oneself and to others. Therefore, it is the teacher's responsibility to design a new form of musical teaching, even within the institutions

Full textThis study of the modernization policy of the RATP shows that an analysis of time is central to understanding the changes introduced by any plan or enterprise transformation the first part of the thesis describes the development of the RATP over the last fifteen years and situates it in terms of the context in wich it was conceived end carried out. It develops the interpretative tools necessary to understand this transformation as a socio- temporal phenomena, including a reanalysis of the process of the construction of the research data. The second part of the study presents three case histories which concretize these general observation (metro, bus, RER). It suggests that we are witnessing a change in time concepts : time is no longer perceived as retribution nor in terms of routine, nor does it preceed linearly toward the future. . The third part of the study proposes an in-depth look at the functioning of the three sectors of exploitation. It shows how they are perturbed by reforms without being able to recontitute a new unities. While social times have been altered, there is no corresponding change in daily organization except concerning management positions. Nonetheless, some creative innovations have been undertaken within existing time frames. In addition, the general moderzation has led agents to elaborate new time relations in relationship to the offer of identity. Four identity forms can be isolated (poachers, mobiles, crushed and bystanders) which are linked to the capacity to activly engaged in the present. The experience of the RATP reveals the extent to which any modernization requires reflexion and action in the area of temporality, both within the organization and in terms of the society which the public enterprise serves

Full textThe aim of this work is to propose channel estimation methods in the context of wireless transmission for the IEEE802. 11a standard. Multicareers technics (OFDM) have already been accepted in such standards. Our approach is in the framework of multicareers systems and takes advatange of these techniques. We propose, in a first time, a new channel model which is piecewise constant. This model permits to increase the observations being used to estimate a given parameter and also to reduce the number of channel coefficients which must be estimated. The introduction of this model in the EM (Expectation-Maximization) algorithm procedure provides an algorithm which maximizes the likelihood and the arithmetical complexity is turned from exponential to linear. The performances of this new algorithm are satisfactory. Then, we propose a Maximum a posteriori (MAP) version which takes into account the output of an autoregressive filter as a channel evolution model. The resulting algorithm improves performances significantly but its complexity becomes important. The last part of this work consists in proposing a method maximizing the a posteriori probability with a linear arithmetical complexity. The proposed method has the same fixed points than the original MAP algorithm and the convergence of these algorithms is established

Full textThe aim of this work is to develop a new method for detection of the DNA amplification during the PCR. This technique based on the electrochemical signal gives to the method advantages as reliability, low cost and amenable for miniaturization in contrast to the fluorescent techniques usually used, which are expensive, bulky and fragile. First of all, we present a state of the art concerning different methods used to replicate specific sequences of DNA by enzymatic reactions which are based on fluorescent methods. In this chapter, we pay particular attention to the real time PCR and other non-optic methods of DNA detection, especially electrochemical one. The first approach developed in this work is based on the catalytic oxidation of a triphosphate nucleoside by a redox mediator. The weak reproducibility of the measures made with the couple mediator/base, Ru(bpy)32+/dGTP, is due to the high potential of oxidation of the dGTP. Nevertheless, the proof of concept is done. Another couple: Os(bpy)32+/7-deaza-dGTP, with a lower potential of oxidation, improve the performances of the method. So it is possible to detect 30 aM of viral DNA but this detection limit is about 200 times worse than the commercial kit using fluorescent probes as TaqMan™. Then a new concept was proposed based on the utilisation of an osmium-complex DNA intercalator. Results obtained showed good performances compared with TaqMan™ probes in terms as detection limit or sensitivity. These results emphasize electrochemistry as a new tool to detect DNA by real-time PCR

Full textThe present study of the life and times of Tu Kuang-T'ing is organized as a biographical chronicle with historical digressions and discussions of Tu’s works under their period of compilation. It is based on diverse primary sources, including official and private historiography, collections of literary and religious tales, court memorials and liturgical documents, epigraphy, poetry, and recent archaeological findings in Szechwan province. The biography of Tu itself distinguishes five important phases in his life: the making of the future court Taoist (up to age 25), his service at the court of Emperor Hsi-Tsung at Ch'ang-An (up to age 31), the exile at Ch'eng-Tu (up to age 35), the period of transition between the faltering T'ang dynasty and the foundation of the kingdom of Shu in Szechwan (up to age 43), and, finally, his career at the court of Shu (up to age 75). The text of the first substantial biography of Tu Kuang-T'ing is presented in a collated and annotated edition in the Appendix. It had formed part of the hagiographical collection entitled “Lives of eminent Taoists” by Chia Shan Hsiang in the late eleventh century and survives today only in fragments. The Appendix is followed by a classified bibliography of the 126 works currently identified as ascribed to Tu Kuang-T'ing. The list of principle works cited, finally, gives the full bibliographical details for those works which are cited in abbreviated references in the notes

Full textStochastic weather generators are numerical models able to simulate sequences of weather data with similar statistical properties than observed data. However, few of them are able to simulate several variables (with precipitation) at different sites from one region. In this thesis, we propose an original model of stochastic generator based on a spatio-temporal multivariate Gaussian random field. A first methodological work was needed to develop a completely non separable cross-covariance function suitable for the spatio-temporal multivariate nature of studied data. This cross-covariance function is a generalization to the multivariate case of spatio-temporal non-separable Gneiting covariance in the case of the family of Matérn. The proof of the validity of the model and the estimation of its parameters by weighted pairwise maximum likelihood are presented. An application on weather data shows the interest of this new model compared with existing models. The multivariate Gaussian random field allows the modeling of weather variables residuals (excluding precipitation). Residuals are obtained after normalization of variables by seasonal means and standard deviations, themselves modeled by sinusoidal functions. The integration of precipitation in the stochastic generator requires the transformation of a component of the Gaussian random field by an anamorphosis function. This anamorphosis function can manage both the occurrence and intensity of precipitation. The corresponding component of the Gaussian random field corresponds to a rain potential, correlated with other variables by the cross-covariance function developed in this thesis. Our stochastic weather generator was tested on a set of 18 stations distributed over the Mediterranean area (or close) in France. The conditional and non-conditional simulation of daily weather variables (maximum and minimum temperature, average wind speed, solar radiation and precipitation) for these 18 stations show good result for a number of statistics

Full textFor a long time, the French Revolution has been seen as a black hole in the universe of literary history, a vision that scholars have yet been reconsidering in the past decades. The study of the literary career of Marie-Joseph Chénier (1764-1811), a tragic poet reputed in his time and the younger brother of André Chénier, offers the possibility for a better understanding of the many ruptures and continuities that the period underwent. Marie-Joseph Chénier enters the literary world at the very end of the Ancien Régime and unexpectedly makes himself a name in the fall of 1789 with a theatre play that he succeeds in putting on stage despite censorship: Charles IX, a tragedy in which he places artistic freedom and more specifically that of theatre at the heart of political events. The stage seems due to secure the author an unprecedented influence. Chénier attempts in this context to accompany in his later tragedies the evolution of the Revolution albeit not without some critical distance and together with an involvement in public life, first among the Jacobins then within the Convention. He thus becomes an important figure of the cultural institutions of his time notably through the anthems that he composes for nearly all the revolutionary festivals between 1790 and 1795. The events during the Terror have a lasting personal impact on Chénier who then decides to mark a pause in his theatrical vocation after 9 Thermidor. He abandons the literary world and focuses on the cultural and political reconstruction of the new Republic that follows the fall of the Montagnards. Chénier is subjected to tenacious political hatred that will lastingly affect his reputation as a poet. To that respect his life and career are representative of the transformations that inform the status and work of a man of letters under the Revolution. They also illustrate the new kinds of obstacles met by authors in that period

Full textIs it possible for the renaissance in the field of photography that took place in France between the 1920’s and early 1930’s to be traced to a single group of avant-garde artists ? Photography historians have traditionally concentrated their research on the fact that the photographs of the New Vision released photography from the mistakes of pictorialism and gave it back its autonomy in terms of graphic arts. However, they neglected a remark made in 1930 by Carlo Rim: “the abstract images of Man Ray and Tabard, which foreshadow a joyful reaction, are nothing but an ephemeral fad.” Though the New Vision can be considered to be photography’s new golden age, in France it was rapidly eclipsed by a return “to the most in focus image of the poorest subject,” generated by the rediscovery of early photographs. It is to this era in the history of photography that this study of the photographer Emmanuel Sougez (1889-1972) is devoted. Sougez’s rise to the ranks of the masters of photography and his celebration until the 1950’s as one of the greatest living French photographers, is largely due to his reintroduction of the use of a large format view camera and contact prints. Thus, this study brings to light another facet of the renaissance of photography in France, within the context of a forgotten figure, by assessing the crucial role that Sougez played between the First Independent Salon of Photography in 1928 and the last National Salon of Photography in 1959. Furthermore, in emphasizing the photographer’s contribution to his art, this thesis reveals previously unseen aspects of photography in the first half of the 20th century
