Abstract:
The article is devoted to research of “brotherhood” phenomenon in international relations. The meaning of the term “brotherhood” in diplomatic history of the Ancient East and medieval China is analyzed. Some “brotherhood” treaties are given. The author demonstrates with many examples that a family terminology (“father”, “son”, “grandfather”, “grandson”, “uncle”, “nephew”, “brother”) was often used in chronicles of many epochs and civilizations to determine the state status in the system of international relations and for a designation of various nuances of relations of a political dependence, vassalage and hegemony. Extrapolating experience of the history of Eastern diplomacy at the modern system of international relations, the author concludes that traditional slogans of Russian propaganda about “one nation” and “eternal brotherhood” of Russian and Ukrainian nations mean only the assertion of an inequality and dependence of Ukrainian state from the “elder brother”, the second-class status of Ukrainians as a nation, but not a feeling of a mutual affection and family ties.

Abstract:
Statement of the problem. The article analyzes the ways of recreating oriental features in the song “Oriental Melody” (“Skhidna melodiia”) by Ukrainian composer Mykola Lysenko, based on a poem by Ukrainian poetess, playwright, short story writer Lesia Ukrainka. This song, or “solospiv”, as Lysenko called his vocal and piano works, was created in the last period of the composer’s work, when, working in this genre, he began to use poems by modern Ukrainian poets, including Lesia Ukrainka. This fact most likely caused some changes in the style of these works in comparison with Lysenko’s more traditional early works. “Oriental melody” has not been previously studied by musicologists, so this article conducts its composition analysis in order to understand its structure and ways of interpreting the poetic text The purpose of the study is to identify the specific embodiment of oriental features in the musical language of the song. Results and conclusions. Lesia Ukrainka’s poem “Oriental Melody” from her second Crimean cycle “Crimean Echoes” (“Krymski vidhuky”) is a love poem, in which oriental images are interspersed with exotic landscapes of the Crimea. The composer strives to follow the structure of the poem, which led to the creation of a five-part composition with a variational repetition of the first part at the very end. The article reveals that Lysenko’s “Oriental Melody” contains a number of well-established ways for Western European music to recreate the oriental image. In addition, the song contains features of recitative, sometimes giving the impression of a theatrical monologue. Lysenko often changes the meter, avoids repetition in rhythmic structures, using complex rhythms and seeks for through-composed type of composition. The lack of scholars’ attention to the song “Oriental Melody” can be explained by the dominance of the folklore paradigm in the studies of Lysenko’s music, which doesn’t focus on oriental themes. However, it is interesting how exactly this song became a meeting place for two different worldviews. Lesia Ukrainka was one of the brightest Ukrainian modernist writers, and Mykola Lysenko, who is considered the founder of the Ukrainian national school of composers, created his music in the style of late romanticism. Thus, although the oriental scenery of the song is recreated by a number of clichés, the sincerity of the protagonist is indisputable, and the work as a whole has its own artistic value.

Abstract:
The paper introduces into academic discourse two letters by S. Donich to the famous Ukrainian orientalist A. Krymskyi. The letters were written in January, 1927, before the Donich’s academic career as an Egyptologist, an archaeologist and a museum curator was started. Both letters were compiled in Arabic; the first letter was more thorough and was compiled as a sample of traditional Arabic letter (it includes coloured basmala and colophon), another letter was brief and written in European style. Such way of communication was chosen by S. Donich (amateur who independently studied oriental languages at that moment) to demonstrate his competence in Arabic to A. Krymskyi, the leading Arabist of the Ukrainian Socialist Soviet Republic, and USSA at that time. S. Donich wrote about his interest in oriental languages and their study, about his fascination for Oriental Studies, and about his difficult life circumstances that interfered him to become an academic orientalist. Donich emphasized he was a devotee of the Arabic language and informed about his translation of “The Thousand and One Night”. Some fragments of his translation into Russian he included into the letter. Thus S. Donich hoped to declare himself as a potential candidacy for further oriental study. The analysis of the content of the letters in a broader historical context, and in combination with other archive documents related to S. Donich, A. Krymskyi, and the academic Oriental Studies institutions of USSR, make it possible to uncover the circumstances in which of the individual orientalists lived and made their careers in the 1920s. It also provides us with some new facts of the biography and professional activity of S. Donich, as well as it makes possible to verify some previously known information about him. An assumption was made that these letters led to a new period of the Donich’s life, his turning to the Oriental Studies, with his later career as an Egyptologist, a museum curator and an archaeologist with his continuous interest in Arabic studies and other fields of Oriental Studies. The appendix provides a complete translation of the Arabic letters into Ukrainian together with and photographs of the documents. Key words: Ukrainian Museum Egyptology, History of Ukrainian Science, History of Ukrainian Humanities, History of Egyptology, History of Oriental Studies in Ukraine, S. Donich, A. Krymskyi.

Abstract:
The work is devoted to the study of the correlation between the motives, images, symbols, stereotypes and clichés existing in modern Ukrainian literature, which outline the Eastern philosophical tradition, and the formation and transformation of identity at different levels and types. The consideration is carried out in the context of the emergence of the latest Ukrainian myth as a basis for national ideology. The purpose of the research is to outline the paradoxical nature of the general reception and individual explications of oriental motifs in modern Ukrainian literature on the occasion of those segments that can be defined through the predications of genre or mass. The article outlines the peculiarities of the reflection of oriental motifs in modern Ukrainian literature related to the dominance of the aesthetic and philosophical influences of the paradigm of postmodernism in the national tradition during the last decades. It also notes the connection between the reception of oriental motifs in Ukrainian modern literature and the politicization of modern public discourse on the occasion of the meaning-making East-West dichotomy. Political and ideological contexts of literary discourse and speech practices acquire signs of ambivalence and function as symbolic constructions. The dual nature of the reception of the image and philosophy of the East in the Ukrainian literary tradition and mass consciousness of both the metaphysical East and the geopolitical East has been clarified. The direction of transformation of oriental motives and images in the mass consciousness and literary usus in the context of finding the identity of different types and levels of generality in Ukrainian society and culture is also recorded. The liminal type of culture correlates with a divided society, and as a result the rational-educational interpretation of the image of the East as the antithesis of the West interacts with the postmodern fusion and mutual determination of East and West.

Hundorova, Tamara. "ROMA AS A MATRIX OF THE ‘OTHER’IN THE PROJECTION OF ORIENTALISM, RACE, AND NATION IN THE WORKS BY OLHA KOBYLIANSKA." Слово і Час, no. 6 (December 13, 2023): 3–19. http://dx.doi.org/10.33608/0236-1477.2023.06.3-19.

Abstract:
The paper analyzes the images of Romani in the works by Olha Kobylianska against the background of the multiethnic situation in Bukovyna, and traces the influence of the anthropological interpretation of the Gypsies as a race and a pre-modern people on the representation of Romani in the literature of the Romanticism period and the 2nd half of the 19th century. Kobylianska treats the Gypsies not only as an exotic ‘other’ but also as an integral part of the cultural and ethnic identity of Ukrainian society and analyzes the relationship between Romani as monads and settled peasants, as well as the processes of assimilation and integration of Gypsies into the Ukrainian environment. By depicting the colourful images of the Roma in her works, Kobylianska unfolds conflict situations related to the struggle for land and the participation of ‘outsiders’ in them. The Gypsy is a figure of the stranger who serves as a matrix of ‘otherness’ for her and functions in various semantic projections. Such a matrix is projected onto the life of Hutsuls as children of nature; it correlates with the situation of reversed gender, in particular feminine identity; it serves as an attribute of exotic and oriental racial otherness. Adopting romantic oriental stereotypes about Gypsies, Kobylianska, in accordance with the anthropology of the time, marks them racially (through the signification of the ‘black’ body) and geographically (through their belonging to the Oriental world). At the same time, she brings these images closer to Ukrainian life and everyday routine and doesn’t ignore the assimilation and relations between Ukrainians and Gypsies. Settled and nomadic peoples, insiders and outsiders become the backdrop against which Kobylianska unfolds the drama of shaping the modern Ukrainian nation.

In particular, it describes many interesting facts, starting from the conception and collection of materials that began in the 90s of the last century, to important recent archival research, the processing of which somewhat delayed the publication of this encyclopedic reference. The appearance of the encyclopedic book, which is the subject of this article, significantly fills the gap about the Ukrainians in East Asia, their political and cultural life. So, in this way, it contributes to the currently Ukrainian Oriental studies. Abstract:
The article is devoted to the sources of the formation of a linguistic persona of the future famous scholar, writer, translator, and polyglot – Ahatanhel Krymskyi. In the article there has been conducted an analysis of the communicative geographical and epistolary discursive area of A. Krymskyi at the times of his childhood and adolescence. These periods of his life we consider the decisive ones for his linguistic individualization and the definition of the parameters of a linguistic persona. The linguistic persona’s features were caused by the origin of A. Krymskyi (the Crimean Tartar roots, an intelligent family of a teacher of history and geography and a Polish Lithuanian noble woman), and his unique abilities (the boy learned to read at the age of 3 and a half, had a phenomenal memory, and an analytical brain). A great role was played by the multilingual and multicultural places of dwelling and studying, namely the following towns and cities: Volodymyr Volynskyi, Zvenyhorodka, Ostroh, Kyiv (such languages as Ukrainian, Russian, Polish, and Yiddish were spoken there and different ethnic cultures cooperated), Moscow (A. Krymskyi was surrounded by the Russian, Ukrainian, and other languages; a Ukrainian community was actively working), Beirut (in the city, the Arabic, French, Russian, and other languages were spoken; there was a unique environment of Eastern/Oriental cultures). The formation of a polyglot was favoured by the study of classical languages, Western European, Slavonic and Eastern / Oriental languages at the secondary and higher educational institutions. The evolution of scientific abilities of the specialist in the Ukrainian, Slavonic and Oriental studies was supported by the highly professional teachers (first of all Pavlo Zhytetskyi in Kyiv and Vsevolod Miller, Oleksii Veselovskyi, Ihnatii Krachkovskyi in Moscow). The communication with famous people (Ivan Franko, Borys Hrinchenko, Omelian Ohonovskyi, Mykhailo Pavlyk, Lesia Ukrainka and others) intensified the Ukrainian vector of the linguistic persona of A. Krymskyi. Creative possibilities of the linguopersona-writer and translator are reflected in his literary and translation heritage (the collection of poems “Palm branches” (1901, 1908), “The Stories of Beirut” (1906), the novel “Andrii Lahovskyi” (1905, a full version was published in 1972), translations of the poetry by Hafez, Omar Khayyam, Saadi, Ferdowsi, Turkish folk songs and others into Ukrainian and Russian.

Volik, N. "CAUSES OF THE CONFLICTS BETWEEN UKRAINIAN GREEK CATHOLIC IMMIGRANTS AND THE HIERARCHY OF THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH IN CANADA (1895-1914)." Bulletin of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. History, no. 149 (2021): 5–11. http://dx.doi.org/10.17721/1728-2640.2021.149.1.

Abstract:
Ukrainian immigration has played a significant role in the economic development of Canada as well as in the formation of religious diversity in the country. Most Ukrainians who came to Canada during the first wave of immigration (1891-1914) belonged to the Greek Catholic Church in Galicia, and their interactions with the Roman Catholic clergy were not straightforward, primarily due to differences in their languages and rites. In the article the competition in the mission territories in Western Canada among the Roman Catholic Franco- and Anglo-Canadian clergy formed a phenomenon of rivalry between them and aggravated the religious situation has been ascertained. The issues of jurisdiction of the bishop of the Greek Catholic Church in Galicia over immigrants, the presence of married clergy, and the ownership of acquired church property became decisive in the religious life of Ukrainian immigrants during the first wave has been proved. The unwillingness of the Roman Catholic hierarchy to understand the needs of Greek Catholics led to their transition to other denominations. The article shows that in order to stop the conversion of Greek Catholics to other denominations, the Commission of Oriental Rites in 1909 recognized the expediency of appointing a Ukrainian bishop to Canada. The establishment of the Ruthenian Ordinariate in Canada in 1912 and the granting of full jurisdiction to Bishop N. Budka in the management of communities hastened their unification into a single ecclesiastical institution and helped resolve conflicts at the first stage of the religious life of Ukrainian Greek Catholics in Canada. The peculiarity of the relationship between Ukrainian Greek Catholics and the hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church was: 1) the Roman Catholic Church was superconservative and in making decisions guided by the rules of law, not the requirements of the time; 2) Ukrainian Greek Catholic immigrants grew from a “small problem” to a “big opportunity” for Roman Catholic Church in the renewal of religious life as opposed to Protestants; 3) the experience of this relationship contributed to the further establishment of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in other countries.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to an ambiguous and problematic issue related to Ukrainian- Basque linguistic ties. By lexical parallels (they can also be called conditional isoglosses) the author of this study means hypothetical borrowings-internationalisms (Europeanisms), presumably of Basque origin. Examples of basquisms in the Ukrainian language (багнет, більярд, анчоус, i.e. ʽbayonet, billiard, anchovy’) have been given by K. Tyshchenko, well known Ukrainian scientist. Ukr. багнет (from the name of the city of Bayonne in France), traditionally explained as a borrowing of French origin from the Polish language; that of Fr. Bayonne is compared to Basque Baiona; anyhow, there is no generally accepted opinion; according to one of the hypotheses, the latter may come from Basq. bai una / bai ona. Ukr. більярд is derived from Fr. billard, however, Pop. Lat. *bīlia is obviously of Gaulish origin; Basq. billar is similar in form to Sp. billar, which is interpreted as an ancient borrowing from French. There are certain grounds for associating the Basque etymon with Ukr. анчоус, borrowed from Dutch or German, the corresponding names of which come from Fr. anchois, which comes down, like Sp. anchoa, to Basq. anchu. It is worth mentioning Ukr. кролик (ʽrabbit’), which is considered to be a Latinism borrowed from Polish; at the same time, foreign lexicographers assume that Lat. cuniculus is of Mediterranean-Iberian (pre-Romance) origin and it is compared to Basq. untxi. Besides, let’s mention Ukr. силует, which is a generally accepted loanword from French, but the surname Silhouette is a modified Basq. Zilueta. So, for now, we can talk about separate and generally hypothetical Ukrainian-Basque etymological isoglosses. Оne of them includes Ukr. чемерка, interpreted as a word of Arabic origin, borrowed from Polish; the origin of Pol. czamar(k)a is defined as «oriental»; at the same time Sp. zamarra is interpreted as a possible loanword from Basque. Finally, we can consider Ukr. джинго ʽjingo’ as a historical Basquism. The raised issues are a promising topic for further studies.

Grisha Ashvayants and other Armenians in the Ukrainian trilogy of Józef Łobodowski The article analyses the image of Armenians and their fate in the novel cycle of the Polish emigratory writer Józef Łobodowski (1909-1988). This cycle, called the Ukrainian trilogy (Komysze, 1955; W stanicy, 1958; Droga powrotna, 1960), is based on experiences of the author, who spent his youth in Kuban during World War One and the period shortly after the Bolshevik revolution. In this trilogy, Armenians do not constitute only the oriental decoration. Writing about these people, Łobodowski realised more serious intention. He seems to indicate that friendship between the novel hero Staś Majewski and the Armenian boy Grisha Ashvayants means not only incredible adventures but primarily the effective alliance of the weak against threatening powers. This alliance is not only individual but also uniting even the whole nations.

According to the genre characteristics, the article is a form of publicizing analytical conclusions from the experience of research in the field of the philosophical Chinese studies at the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine from 1991 to the present day. The material for understanding was supplied from the environment of scientific professional activity of prominent figures of Ukrainian philosophical Sinology from the H. Skovoroda Institute of Philosophy of the NAS of Ukraine and the A. Krymskyi Institute of Oriental Studies of the NAS of Ukraine. The scientific achievements of academic Sinologists, who are leading researchers of Chinese philosophical education, science and culture from the archaic to modern times, are highlighted. They are, namely: V. Kiktenko, V. Pyrohiv, V. Hamianin, S. Kapranov, Y. Hobova and A. Usyk. M e t h o d s . The article uses an analytical approach based on the study of historical and philosophical sources. The methodological basis of the research is the main methods of historical and philosophical science: problem-categorical analysis, socio-cultural analysis and biographical analysis. At the same time, the methods of situational and contextual analysis of scientific texts are applied. R e s u l t s . Four conditional thematic vectors of the progress of academic philosophical Sinology in modern Ukraine are classified, namely the study of: 1. the history of ancient Chinese philosophy, especially Confucianism; 2. the history of Chinese philosophy in the 19th – early 21st centuries; 3) the history of Ukrainian Sinology in the 18th – early 21st centuries; 4. the history of modern foreign Sinology. The director of the A. Krymskyi Institute of Oriental Studies of the NAS of Ukraine and the head of the Ukrainian Association of Sinologists V. Kiktenko very effectively studies all these vectors, especially the last three of them. His colleagues at the institute V. Pyrohiv, V. Hamianin and Y. Hobova mainly research the first of these vectors, and primarily the history of Confucianism. Employees of the H. Skovoroda Institute of Philosophy of the NAS of Ukraine S. Kapranov and A. Usyk are also focused scientific attention on the history of Confucianism, in particular, the second of them studies social ethics and anthropology of Confucius. C o n c l u s i o n s . As a result it was established that modern domestic philosophical academic Sinology is a qualitatively new and innovative direction of Oriental studies in independent Ukraine. This discipline was formed as a result of the two-century progress of Ukrainian Chinese studies from the era of Hetmanshina until now. V. Kiktenko and his colleagues have made a significant and already internationally recognized contribution to the study of both the classical philosophical schools of Ancient China and their ideological heirs, in particular, the leaders of the PRC and the CCP from Deng Xiaoping to Xi Jinping during these thirty years. V. Kiktenko also laid the foundations for the study both of the history of Ukrainian Chinese studies and of modern foreign, primarily Western European and North American, Sinology.

Dedicated to the problem of modeling the image of Ancient Egypt in the work of Lesya Ukrainka as one of the popular areas of interests of intellectuals of the 19th – early 20th centuries. It was determined that the formation of this image is the result of her solid Egyptological knowledge, formed both through acquaintance with contemporary scientific oriental and Egyptological literature, and through direct study of the ancient Egyptian cultural heritage during her stay in Egypt and visiting its museums and ancient monuments. It is emphasized that the Egyptian essays by Lesia Ukrainka became the first attempt of Ukrainian orientalism to organize knowledge about the East on a Ukrainian mental basis. It is emphasized that the poetry of Lesya Ukrainka on Egyptian themes is the original artistic expression of her "History of the Eastern Peoples", in fact, the views expressed in it on the peculiarities of the development of ancient civilizations

Abstract:
Ukrainian Autonomous Republic of Crimea and then launched a war on Ukrainian territory in Donbass. Since then, the efforts of the Ukrainian state and society, the vast majority of the world community are aimed at restoring the territorial integrity of Ukraine, punishing Russia for its aggressive actions, compensating our state for the damage caused by this invasion. Thus, the research, coverage of the history and modernity of the Crimean issues are one of the most urgent tasks of the Ukrainian scientific and expert community. The Center for the Study of the History of the Turkish and Crimean Tatar Peoples of the Department of Modern and Contemporary History of Foreign Countries of the Faculty of History has a number of international scientific conferences, scientific and methodological seminars, round tables, exhibitions and presentations. Therefore, it is quite natural that the head of this Center, Associate Professor Oleh Romanovych Kupchyk, initiated a number of scientific and methodological seminars “Crimea in the coordinates of history.” It is noteworthy that this initiative arose and began to be implemented during the period of mass concentration of Russian troops on the Ukrainian borders and in fact in the most temporarily occupied Crimea, for a further attack on Ukraine, which eventually took place on February 24, 2022. The first scientific seminar was opened on May 20, 2021 by Inna Stepanets, Candidate of Geographical Sciences, Vice-Rector for Scientific and Pedagogical Work (Humanitarian Affairs) of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. The first section of this scientific event “Crimea in European / World History” opened with reports by Professor of the Department of Modern and Contemporary History of Foreign Countries of the Faculty of History Nataliia Gorodnia and Head of the same department, guarantor of the Bachelor educational program American Studies and European Studies (with in-depth study of foreign languages) Oleh Mashevskyi, who considered the US position on Russia’s actions in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea in February-March 2014 and, accordingly, the problem of annexation of Ukrainian Crimea by the Russian Federation in the policy of US Presidents B. Obama and D. Trump. In today’s world, the countries of the East are becoming increasingly geopolitically important, given their economic, demographic, and political potential. Therefore, the involvement of these states in the pro-Ukrainian policy of resisting Russian aggression, sanctioning the Kremlin, and supplying Ukraine with modern weapons is of paramount importance. Associate Professor of the Department of Modern and Contemporary History of Foreign Countries of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, guarantor of the Educational Program Oriental Studies of the Bachelor level Makar Taran in his reports discussed in detail the contexts of Crimea for China’s foreign policy after 2014. Oleh Kupchyk, Associate Professor of the Department of Modern and Contemporary History of Foreign Countries of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Guarantor of the Oriental Studies Educational Program of Master level, spoke about the position of the Republic of Turkey on the annexation of the Ukrainian Crimea by the Russian Federation. The reports of the second section “Crimea in the history of Ukraine” were quite interesting, first of all, which cover Crimean issues in the history of Ukraine in a global context. After an active discussion of Crimean issues in the history of Ukraine and the international context, which was joined by the President’s representative in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea Anton Korynevych, it was decided to publish a collection of scientific papers on the results of this scientific forum and hold a second thematic scientific seminar on Crimean issues in autumn 2021.

Abstract:
The subject of scientific research is a comparative analysis of the British and Ukrainian women writers short stories from the perspective of the interaction of literature and music in the period of modernism. This approach involves considering music as an expression of the specific modernist worldview of writers, passed through the prism of the inner “Self” of the female personality. It is based on the literary analysis of the works of V. Woolf “String Quartet”, K. Mansfield “The Singing Lesson”, “Weak Heart” and “Spring Pictures”, D. Vikonska “Polonaise D-moll Chopin (op. 71, No. 1)”, “Prelude of fis-dur No. 2, Vasil Barvinsky”, “Music” and I. Vilde “Pianist”, “Oriental Melody” and “Bizarre Heart”. The study of the phenomenon of musicalization of prose, based on the concept of the famous intermedialist W. Wolf, allows us to identify various forms of its presentation. In the content aspect, we can talk about the presence of two varieties of thematization of music in mentioned literary texts: intra- and paratextual thematization. In the structural aspect, all three forms of imitation are represented: verbal music; imaginary content analogy, expressed mainly in the associative imagery of water (love); a formal and structural analogy, presented as an imitation of musical macroforms (quartet and fuget) and microforms (compositional technique of polyphony). A notable feature of this study is the discovery of original creative parallels in the poetics of modernist women writers – simultaneously at the intersection and within the national literatures. Imaginary content analogies are related to the writing style of Ukrainian and British women writers – D. Vikonska and V. Woolf, as well as I. Vilde and K. Mansfield; the imitation form of musical microforms reveals the internal stylistic similarity of both British and Ukrainian literatures: amplification constructions in V. Woolf and K. Mansfield writings, on the one side and syntactic modifications of key reference lexemes in D. Vikonska and I. Vilde, on the other side.

The article examines the peculiarities of scientific methods Ahatanhel Krymskyi in ethnology of scientific methods in ethnology of the orientalist, linguist, historian, ethnologist, public figure and writer Ahatanhel Yukhymovych Krymskyi (1871–1942), member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Researchers-biographers of Ahatanhel Krymskyi paid the main attention to his oriental and philological works. Some scholars have been involved in the analysis of his ethnological research. The total number of ethnological works of Ahatanhel Krymskyi is 112 publications: 72 works on foreign ethnology and 40 on Ukrainian anthropology. The features of his scientific methods in ethnology were bibliographic studios with extensive complexes of scientific literature. The spread of European politics in the 19th century to the East required the involvement of many specialists in Oriental studies, in the preparation of which Ahatanhel Krymskyi took part. Therefore, he paid great attention to the creation of numerous textbooks for students studying oriental studies. For each position from the bibliographic list, the author gave a broad commentary, which could become the basis for further study of a particular problem related to the specified book or article. On the basis of a wide range of archival materials and scientific works of the scientist, it was found out that his scientific works were strongly influenced by the Theories of Diffusion of Folk-Tales or international exchange of folklore story that was dominant at that time in Europe. The widespread use of the historical-comparative method made it possible to trace the spread of mythological subjects from East to West. Thus, the academician came to the conclusion about the only source of origin of various mythological stories. This theory was subsequently refuted, but the wide material that the scientist collected in his research is still an important element that encourages further researchers to turn to his scientific heritage.

Abstract:
The Russian-Ukrainian war marked the Rubicon, on crossing which, the world has begun to change dramatically and irreversibly. This article is an attempt to comprehend the Russian-Ukrainian war in the context of the world-system methodology of I. Wallerstein. The authors consider the phenomenon of war and the phenomenon of revolution as key factors of historical change. The authors reconstruct the change in the geopolitical balance of power over long cycles of history, where the world war and the system of treaties after it are considered as starting points for new cyclic turns. The authors consider global changes in the world system order, starting from the period of the "Napoleonic Wars" and subsequent global wars of the XIXth – XXIst centuries. The article traces the role of World wars in the fate of the existing world-system. The Russian-Ukrainian war is seen as the initiation of the breakdown of the existing world order and the establishment of a world-system of a different type. This war has quite a clear geopolitical context, as any other great war in humankind's history. This context is a global geopolitical game that has engulfed almost the entire world community. Looking at Wallerstein's theory we can understand this game as the irreconcilable opposition of the dominant Occidental (Anglo-Saxon) world-system against attempts of the Oriental (China-centrical) system to brake the existing world order radically. World politology discusses attempts by the Chinese-Russian geopolitical alliance to receive the status of a new world-system core. As a result, there is a great increase in mutual tension between the two world-system cores.

Abstract:
The article attempts to outline the activity of Kharkiv art history school from the time of its formation in the 1900s to the present day. The author reveals the main directions of research of university art history in Kharkiv, as well as figures of museum institutions who were engaged in the study of topical problems of art before the outbreak of Stalinist terror, when Kharkiv art history school was completely destroyed, and its representatives were either shot (F. Shmit, P. Fomin, K. Slipko-Moskaltsiv) or sent into exile (S. Taranushenko, P. Zholtovsky, D. Gordeiev, O. Berladina). It is emphasized that none of them ever returned to Kharkiv. This became a serious obstacle in the restoration of the scientific art history school in the city. This process lasted for a very long time in comparison with other artistic centers, Kyiv and Lviv in particular. The article reveals the traditions of art history science in Kharkiv, laid down in the first third of the 20th century before its destruction in the Stalinist period. The author also shows the changes in the organization of research activities in modern conditions, when university art history has become a thing of the past, and the scientific center has moved to the higher art institution of the city, which became the Kharkiv Institute of Art and Industry (the Kharkiv State Academy of Design and Arts from 2001).The main directions of the development of art history in this higher educational institution of art in Kharkiv are revealed. It is shown that, first of all, Ukrainian studios were resumed as a separate direction and such an outstanding phenomenon of Ukrainian national art as M. Boichuk’s school, destroyed during the Stalinist repressions, was reconstructed. Separate pages about some figures of the glorious cohort of Ukrainian masters who, with their work, personified the bright and tragic era for the Ukrainian creative intelligentsia of the 1920s, namely artist-writer M. Zhuk as well as representatives of the avant-garde phenomenon in the artistic culture of the 20th century in Kharkiv (V. Yermilov, B. Kosarev, A. Petrytsky), were also revealed. Not only was the range of Oriental studies restored, but to some extent expanded, the study of Far and Middle Eastern art was introduced, and the study of Ukrainian art Judaica and Jewish art was brought to the wider modern world. In the Soviet period this was impossible due to the policy of the Soviet power. Ukrainian theater decoration art, Ukrainian school of art photography, contemporary art became new directions. The development of established traditions and deepening of the study of the sacred art and modern art forms are among the prospects for further directions.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the problematic issue of the genre-style interaction of the musical traditions of the East and the West in Vocal cycle «From songs of Hiroshima» by Ivan Karabyts. The relevance of the research is in the fact that the phenomenon of genre-style interaction between the traditions of the East and the West in the chamber-vocal works of Ukrainian composers of the second half of the 20th century remains little studied in art history. Therefore, the purpose of the study is to identify the genre-style dominants of the vocal cycle «From Songs of Hiroshima» by Ivan Karabyts in the aspect of the dialogue between the cultures of the East and West. Research methods include historical – for the study of scientific sources dedicated to the work of Ivan Karabyts; stylistic – allows to systematize some of the features of the composer's style of Ivan Karabyts, in the context of chamber vocal creativity; semantic, with the help of which the content component of poetic images in a cycle is analyzed; structural and functional – to identify intonational and stylistic features of the cycle; comparative – to compare the musical specificity of the Eastern and Western traditions in the cycle; generalization – necessary to summarize the results of the study. Conclusions: For the first time in world musicology, the vocal cycle «From the Songs of Hiroshima» by Ivan Karabyts has been studied in the aspect of the dialogue between the cultures of East and West. The analysis revealed the reception of stylistic and genre elements of the Eastern tradition on the basis of chamber-vocal creativity of Ivan Karabyts. The article presents a detailed analysis of the vocal cycle «From Songs of Hiroshimaby Ivan Karabyts in the genre and stylistic aspect on three levels: semantic, stylistic and architectonic. The semantic level assumes getting familiar with the philosophical ideas of Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism. The stylistic level involves borrowing not only individual ideas or musical motives, but also the religious and spiritual code in general. Oriental flavour (intonation, rhythm, meter, timbre, register). It can be seen through the reflection of stylistic features associated with the Oriental tradition, due to the use of the Oriental way of thinking (contemplation, intuition, meditation) and flavour (intonation, rhythm, meter, timbre, register). The architectonical level provides for the creation of new art forms. It was revealed that along with the traditional features of Japanese music, Ivan Karabyts used forms of musical expression that were new for the middle of the twentieth century: aleatorics, sonoristics, dodecaphony, pointillism. The cultural dialogue of Eastern and Western musical traditions in the vocal cycle «From Songs of Hiroshima» by Ivan Karabyts demonstrates a new aesthetic paradigm of musical art of the second half of the twentieth century, which represents a phenomenal artistic and musical metalanguage – Eurasian. The analyzed cycle became, firstly, the embodiment of the composer's personal artistic search, and secondly, a reflection of the artistic tendencies of Ukrainian culture in the second half of the 20th century.

Abstract:
The paper provides an overview of formation images “Europe” and the “West” in the texts of two prominent Ukrainian publicists in interwar Lviv – Mykhailo Rudnytskyi and Dmytro Dontsov. The article focuses on interwar discussions about the image of Europe, the West, and the East, liberalism, and nationalism. Given the fact that all these and related issues, having entered the Ukrainian public space at the beginning of the XX century remains relevant today, it appears reasonable to analyze these interwar discussions, which represent different ways of imaging European culture. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to clarify the sources of formation of these images, their content, and discussions around them. The author elaborated on the similarities and differences of these images in the texts of Rudnytskyi and Dontsov. The key element in Mykhailo Rudnytsky's worldview in the interwar period was liberalism or rather “cultural liberalism.” The three main ideological blocks for him were “freedom”, “individuality” and inclusiveness (openness) of cultures. Mykhailo Rudnytsky's image of “Europe” was rather amorphous, without clear boundaries, and took the liberal culture of the nineteenth century as examples of liberal figures. “East” occupied a very little place in the worldview of Michael, and was superimposed on the oriental axis “West (Europe) – civilization”, “East (Asia) – barbarism”. At the same time, geographical boundaries were not particularly important, and European movements, if they did not correspond to the ideal liberal model, could be considered barbaric and “Asian”. Dmytro Dontsov's image of Europe was focused not on the liberal Europe of the XIX century, but the radical right movements in interwar Europe. If Rudnytsky emphasized the ideas of liberalism of the XIX century, individual freedom and synthesis of cultures, and these ideas he wanted to see in the image of “Europe”, for Dontsov “Europe” and European thinkers had value in the context of ideas of expansion, struggle as the basis of the people's spirit. At the same time, in the worldview of Mykhailo Rudnytsky and Dmytro Dontsov, “The East” acted as a barbaric antithesis of the “West”, the personification of all the wild and backward, which made their worldview in this sense oriental. Given the above material, we can state that the images of “Europe” and “West” in the interwar period remained extremely ambivalent and heterogeneous, and their content depended on the worldview of the authors.

Abstract:
The attempt to create a “universal state” in the form of an American empire was the response to the global challenge of world interdependence according to A. Toynbee’s methodology. It was designed as a unipolar dictatorship, ignoring the interests of the new “world-civilizations” of the East. This matter led to the decline of Euro-Atlantic civilization’s development. The stage of “collapse” is accompanied by a number of local military conflicts that grew into a macro-regional one - the Ukrainian conflict. As part of the mobilization strategy, the idea of a “besieged fortress” is being rethought in the Russian academic literature, and the concept of the “besieged West” was invented in the West. The latter uses the concept of aggressive “oriental barbarism” and stimulates the policy of “deterring Russia”. The phenomenon of “negative patriotism” has become one of the problems of Russia’s public life. A. Toynbee assigned the genesis of this concept to the imitative nature of Russian elites. Russian researchers see it as a result of the devaluation of the historical significance of Russian national identity.

Abstract:
The author of this article investigated the interactions between the conceits of Occidental and Oriental (Hindu, first of all) philosophies in the play ‘Khazyayin’ (The Master) by Ivan Karpenko-Karyi from the viewpoint of culturological analysis. The ways to interpret the Western paradigm of the writer’s reading were correlated to their hypothetical typological coincidences with Hindu motifs, plots, maxims and realities as the constituents of the play’s artistic world (including the speech and behavior of the characters, their natural and material environment). Therefore, the correlations between the motifs of various philosophies were confirmed as the displays of the writer’s dialogue with Occidental and Oriental cultures on the archetypal level, which is the interpretation of initial philosophical images in their symbolic combinations and, thenceforth, the establishment of their new connotations on Ukrainian cultural background. There was shown that Karpenko-Karyi’s characters set up their own rules of behavior – either for each other or for themselves – which absorb the probable archetypal intentions from West as well as from East. As the matter of fact, the actualization of key maxims and aphorisms of different philosophies (both European and Asian) is apparent in the characters’ appearance and speech. Particularly, it can be epitomized by the figure of Ivan Kalynovych, the teacher, in whose vital philosophy had been quite unexpectedly revealed the Four Noble Truths of Buddhism (the truth of suffering; the truth of the cause of suffering; the truth of the end of suffering; the truth of the path that leads to the end of suffering). On the other hand, the figure of Terentiy Puzyr in Karpenko-Karyi’s comedy is precedent as the collective image of a tyrant described by both Western and Eastern thinkers, considering not only his characteristic appearance (an Ayurvedic Kap’a-type), but also his reluctance to practice what he preached.

Abstract:
Death altarity/alterity of old man in Ukrainian Literature at the period of “Death of the youth”Rereading of one of the most interesting paradoxical death models built on age differentiation is offered in the article. Deconstructive principles of différаnce and Krinein, typical for mature Ukrainian modernism and first of all for the most outstanding representative Mykola Khvyliovyi, are taken into account. The emphasis is placed on the challenge of trivial experience of death difference at the process of acceptation of poetic, triumphal, sacral emotional experience which is corresponded with Friedrich Nietzsche’s Dionysus-Apollo values. The idea of fragmental thinking is explicated as a correlate of delimitation, ambivalence and hovering over a gap/emptiness, which provide radical novelty of opinions about death connected with the discovery of aporia of its fathomlessness. Texts of the 1920th are considered as the territory of rereading of classical works by modernist writers. The texts represent a part of occidentalis-oriental humanitarian fund.

Abstract:
The article deals with the historical projection of the 300-year-old path of the Turandot image in the genre of theatrical music. After completing all the stages of European exoticism in Chinese subjects, Turandot was embodied in the main stages of the development of musical drama - from the baroque French Fair Theater Fory Saint-Lauren (Le Sage / d'Orneval for the first time analyzed music by J.C. Gillіer) through the pre-classical model of Italian folk (K. Gozzi) to the concept of German romanticism (F. Schiller ‒ F. Destush, K.M. Weber, W. Lyahner), oriental readings of the early modern days: neoclassical (F. Buzoni), symbolist (W. Ferst), primitive-naive (Y. Vakhtangov), psychologically-expressionistic (W. Stenhammar), household-entertaining variants (Broadway Theater) and complex multicomponent phenomena of the second half of the twentieth century, embodied in the "epic theater" (B. Brecht / H. D. Hosalla, Y. Lakner, A. Schnitke) and means "Theater of absurd" (W. Hilderschmayer), based on postmodernistic parameters of hybrid genre formations in Ukrainian culture (M. Denisenko, I. Uryvskiy) in the globalized reference of intercultural communication of the beginning of the third millennium.

Abstract:
The aim is to explore the key concepts of stylistics of Ukrainian fine arts, architecture and various types of design of the second half of the XIX – early XXI centuries in the relationship of individual fields of knowledge. Research methods – hermeneutic, axiological, historical-genetic, historical-chronological, comparative, culturological, formal-stylistic, art analysis. The selected tools allow you to compare the stylistic features of different types of design (industrial, graphic, clothing, environment), fine arts and architecture. A novelty is an overview of evolutionary processes in terms of styles in painting, graphics, architecture, various types of design activities (in particular, environmental design, industrial, graphic, clothing). The points of intersection of the conceptual and categorical sphere of the indicated branches of creativity are outlined, both common and different tendencies concerning the identification of stylistic features are observed. Conclusions. The differences of separate branches of knowledge of artistic creativity and common features of some types of design-designing, -construction, -modeling, art technologies bordering on graphic art and painting (graphic design, partly industrial design), architecture (environmental design and partly industrial design) are traced. Since the era of modernism, art deco, avant-garde, constructivism, functionalism, Stalin’s empire, which affected all forms of artistic activity, in the late twentieth – early twenty-first century established the classic, minimalism, high-tech, fusion, low-tech, shabby chic, provence, glamour, some oriental stylizations in the interior associated with architecture. Instead, clothing design, in addition to the classics, over the past few decades has creatively adapted the sports-classic style, manga, country, western, boho, military, glamour and etc. over the past few decades. If the shapes of the silhouettes of the cut look at the general tendencies of industrial design, the drawings of fabrics partially appeal to the visions of graphic design, which are related to the tendencies of fine arts – tendencies of modernism, avant-garde, postmodernism. Namely, they tend to functionalism, constructivism, boychukism, art deco, socialist realism, Stalinist empire, Ukrainian soviet empire, neo-functionalism, neo-primitivism, neo-folk style, polystylism, glamour.

Abstract:
Such a seemingly highly specialized publication as the publication of one of the lists of Macariuss Travels, caused, however, a very emotional reaction in the Ukrainian scientific community. Kiev Turkologist A. I. Galenko, bringing, it seems, some personal accounts with the Institute of Oriental studies. A. Krymsky, made a sharply critical review of the publication.21 The accusations against the different nuances of the translation of the source and the comments to it, largely imagined, ended with a conceptual accusation that the book is published in Ukrainian language, and on the rosascoradyanskoi lingua franca that, coupled with the mention zbrojna agrees Russie22, it looks like a political denunciation. In such a surprising way, the Patriarch of Antioch and his son,the archdeacon, who witnessed political upheavals in Eastern Europe three and a half centuries ago, were involved in todays boiling passions. In conclusion, I would like to wish all the researchers who participated in the Makariev Project a successful completion of the work on the publication of this main work of ArabChristian literature of the New time, as well as new achievements and discoveries in the field of studying the Christian East.

Abstract:
д.It is an undeniable fact that as a result of centuries of historical, cultural, and neighbourly contacts, Orientalisms penetrated the languages of the Slavs in quite large numbers. They are firmly fixed in the lexical structure of Slavic languages both in their original meaning (corresponding to the original language) and in a sense reinterpreted on Slavic soil. Numerous linguistic and culturological works are devoted to this topic. The Ukrainian language is no exception in this regard.Historical lexicology studies the causes, time, and ways of penetration and adaptation of Orientalisms in the Ukrainian language. Borrowings from Oriental languages make up a significant layer of the Ukrainian vocabulary. The fate of borrowings varies: they eithe r remained exoticisms in the recipient language or as a result of extralinguistic factors, they were assimilated so much that they became symbols of national culture. For example, the fate of Orientalisms leleka ‘stork’, kobza, and surma in Ukraine is indicative in this regard. One of the frequent associations with the country is the image of Zaporozhian Cossacks in wide bloomers with an integral attribute – tobacco. The purpose of this study is to identify the semantic and functional peculiarities of the Ukrainian Orientalisms in comparison. In this paper, using the example of these lexical units, we consider the phrase-making potential as well as the semantic and functional features of these borrowed Orientalisms associated with Ukraine, as part of comparative constructions. The paper deals with both outdated similes and those that are actively used nowadays. In addition to this, the author gives possible culturological, historical, and etymological comments to similes, showing the meaning of phraseological units and components that are parts of similes. The study demonstrates that the analyzed Orientalisms have been so firmly established in the foundation of the Ukrainian language that they are not perceived in the recipient language as foreign elements. On the contrary, they have become ethnic symbols in Ukrainian linguistic culture, they are productive in derivational terms (the paper does not deal with this question), and operate in stable compa risons, including imagery and poetry. However, their ethnosymbolic features, apparently, have imposed restrictions on their phraseological potential: in comparison with Orientalisms that have not become markers of Ukrainian culture (baraban, bazar, kavun, kazan, etc.), they are phraseologically less active, not frequent a s part of stable comparisons referring to a standard, measure of action, quality, etc.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the analysis of travel discourse as an element of intercultural communication. The peculiarities of the formation of the image of the "Other" in the travel media text in the context of studying the evolution of the trichotomy "one's-someone else's" are studied. The author reviews world and Ukrainian scientific thought, outlines the main stages of the evolution of the dichotomy of "one's own and others" in travel discourse and the factors influencing the formation of the image of other countries and worlds. The article determines the state of study of the peculiarities of the representation of another in travel media text and outlines promising areas of research. This issue is actively researched in the foreign scientific space (B. Cocking, E. Kavoori, C. Santos, E. Fursich), we record a number of interesting and thorough investigations in the Ukrainian understanding of travel discourse (Y. Polezhaev, O. Yufereva). American researchers have proposed two stages in the development of travel journalism in the context of tourism: modern and postmodern, which outlines the evolution of the dichotomy of "self-alien" from the apologetic image of "self" and contrasting "other" to effort to understand the "other", to join his experience. Within the framework of the outlined tendencies of forming the image of the “other” in travel discourse, scholars record the marginalization of the “other” caused by focusing on the journalist more than at the destination; the cyclical nature of cultural representations of the "other", which can be traced in copies of the oriental discourse of travelers of the XIX century; stereotyping of the image of "others" is caused by the exclusion of local voices; the stereotypical image of Third World countries focuses on the negative aspects or risks for tourists, which emphasizes how good the home is; providing the expected representations of the "other", which serves as a confirmation of the audience's own values and beliefs and is the basis of marketing strategies. The formation of the image of the "Other" in travel discourse has its own characteristics and is caused by the following factors: modern world geopolitical trends, the historical context of interaction of peoples and cultures, the tendency to glocalization and marketing technologies. We consider the analysis of nationally marked language units as an element of the linguistic picture of the world to be a promising area of research in the formation of the image of the "Other" in travel discourse. We also consider the peculiarities of the formation and evolution of the image of the "Other" in travel media text in the Ukrainian context, where we have our own mental features of the perception of "one's own" and "other".

Abstract:
The article examines the currently insufficient the amount of literature on architecture and art of the Celestial Empire, which determines the relevance of this study. However, despite this in Ukrainian oriental studies are presenting the work of scholars specializing in Chinese architecture. Problem statement: the analysis of architectural monuments of ancient China is using well-known theoretical methodologies of scientific research, but taking into account the specifics of the mythological heritage of individual regions of China, the impact on the construction of the architectural image changes. In this regard, it is necessary to explore some methods of mythological influence on the construction of ancient Chinese architecture. Objective of the article: identify features of the methodology of studying the architecture of ancient China. There is describing that based on the general theoretical methods of studying architecture, it was founding that in ancient Chinese architecture there is a special cosmological meaning, which was giving great importance in the Celestial Empire. In ancient buildings, we can see the Chinese idea of the Great Way. The central core of Chinese traditional thinking is the postulate of "the union of man and heaven." This is the basis of his myth making and methods of constructing architectural structures and compositions. It can be suggesting that the further development of the methodology of studying the architecture of China should be based on the postulate of the dominant importance of the natural environment. The Cosmos–Man–Tao triad is a link in the architectural compositions of Chinese buildings and temple complexes.

Abstract:
Two bronze hands associated with the confession of oriental cults are very interesting archaeological items found on theterritoryofUkraine. The first one comes from the village Myshkiv inWestern Podillya, another – from the territory of the Ukrainian steppe. These artifacts are well studied by specialists in archeology, ancient history, theologians, but most of the works on this subject are written in German, Polish and Russian and, because of different reasons, are inaccessible to the Ukrainian reader. The main thesis of the article is an attempt to generalize diverse approaches, versions and concepts and to represent a relatively integral picture of the origin and religious purpose of these cult hands. The main idea of the article is to publish some quite new conclusions and clarifications made during the author's own research. The author examines the history of the discovery of these monuments, indicates the places of their storage, presents detailed sculptural descriptions. While speaking about the hand from Myshkiv, the text of the inscription is clearly reproduced. Three different interpretations of this inscription, offered in the works of T. Rybicki (ego), E. Bormann (a), M. Bandrivsky and O. Bandrovsky, are given, as well as their translations into Ukrainian. The approaches of various scientists on the issue of the sacred purpose of the hand from Myshkiv were analyzed in the article. T. Rybicki considered that it is the top of a Roman military standard. According to J. Zingerle, it is the hand of a contributor who has made a dedication to Jupiter Dolichenus for his military success. But D. Lusthaus thinks it is a symbol of the deity himself, which was also served as the top. J. Kolendo and J. Trynkowski defended the opinion of using of this hand only for religious purposes in the sanctuary at Orheiu Bistriței. Figures from Cătunele in Romaniaand Kavarna in Bulgariaare considered to be similar. It is important that the last one has a figure of Victoria, which is absent on the hands from Myshkiv and Cătunele. Basing on the interpretation of the sign V engraved on the hand as – miliaria (the thousandth), T. Rybicki, E. Bormann, J. Zingerle, J. Kolendo and J. Trynkowski believe that it is “cohorsprima Flavia Ulpia Hispanorum miliaria equitat civium Romanorum”. Instead, M. Bandrovsky and O. Bandrovsky interpret this sign as “equitataquingenaria” (the five hundredth cavalry) and correlate it with “prima I Hispanorum pia fidelis equitata quingenaria”. B. Farmakovsky's position about the appointment of a hand from the territory of the former Ekaterinoslav province is considered. His thought that such objects may be associated not only with Sabazios or Serapis, but also with the cults of other deities, has been proved. But there is no answer yet, whom exactly the hand from the territory of the Ukrainian steppe was dedicated. Instead, it is known that the cause of the donation was the childbirth of an unknown woman. B. Farmakovsky's characteristic of all available reliefs on the hand is presented. According to these arguments, the images of animals on the statuette had to turn away the harmful effects of the evil eye. Basing on this, the hand can be defined as a cult object that has an apotropaic character. The results of the study include detailed analysis of historiography devoted to the study of bronze cult hands found in Ukraine, the involvement of a large amount of additional literature, the presentation of a number of images of similar monuments. The votive character of the Myshkiv hand and the apotropaic character of the Ekaterinoslav one is determined. There are many strong arguments in favour of the statement that the hand from Myshkiv has a direct connection with the thousandth cohort of Spaniards.

Abstract:
The article presents a comprehensive reference of the historical narrative source of Ancient China «Xinian» from the collection of Tsinghua University, the study and research of which continues to this day. This work is introduced into the domestic academic community and Ukrainian oriental studies for the first time, the historical context of its creation is briefly considered. It is noted that the recorded historical events start with the beginning of the Western Zhou period and bring researcher up to the early period of the Warring States, so it allows a new look at the traditional approch of historical events, historical figures, rulers, which are presented in the great work «Historical Records’ (‘Shiji’) by Sima Qian and have many new nuances, a number of disproofs, bias and fill the gaps in our knowledge of the history of Ancient China. Based on already published sources and research materials by foreign authors, it is studied that the events in the narrative source «Xinian» partially match the material with such classic works as «Bamboo Annals» («Zhushu jinian»), «History Book / Book of Documents» («Shujing») and so on. The study found that since the Western Zhou period, the Chu State, which many researchers have identified as barbarians, has been deeply influenced by the Chinese traditional culture of the Central Plains and has contributed to this cultural tradition of mutual integration and cultural exchange. It also reveals new horizons in the early history of Qin state. These facts have been found to require a review of various aspects of the political, administrative, legal, and religious history of the «Chinese» world. Practical value: invaluable material for clarification of the established postulates in textbooks and materials of seminars on the history of the Ancient World, Ancient China in particular on the subject of the analyzed historical period.

Scientific novelty periodization and development of the system of theological education of the UGCC in independent Ukraine (1991–2010) are carried out. Conclusions: the revival and development of theological education of the UGCC during the independence of Ukraine had several features: first, the "spontaneous" resumption of theological seminaries at first gradually acquired clear organizational features, and their formation provided constant training for the next generation of clergy; secondly, for the first time in the history of theological education of the UGCC, a more or less clear concept of its development was created, which allowed not only to delineate theological education at certain organizational levels, but also to ensure the organizational development of theological schools. We can say that on the 20th anniversary of the UGCC coming out of the underground, it created a clearly structured system of theological education, in which three groups can be divided: the first is a network of scientific and educational institutions (UCU in Lviv with a branch in Rome and the Institute of Oriental Christian Studies). in Ottawa), the main task of which is the formation of theological science, its integration into the scientific and educational space of Ukraine; the second is a network of seminaries designed to provide the Church with a new generation of priests; the third is a network of "general Christian education" institutions, including catechetical institutes and deacon-regent schools (with some caveats, as they provide a certain level of theological knowledge and "professional" qualifications), as well as Sunday parish and general Greek Catholic schools. Thus, such a structured system of theological education of the UGCC not only allows for "professional" training of "personnel" for the UGCC, but also contributes to the "new evangelization" of modern society.

Abstract:
The paper is devoted to clay tobacco pipes of the 17th — early 19th centuries, found in Kyiv. The two-part type of pipes of the so-called «eastern» type is analyzed, the most widespread in the territory of Ukraine and prevailing among finds from Kiev. The chibouk and the pipe body of such products are separate parts. Other types are one-piece pipes of the so-called «western» type (or «Dutch»), in which the chibouk and the bowl are one whole, and three-part pipes, in which the middle part (shank) served for connection of chibouk with a one-part pipe. They are extremely few among archaeological finds. The author collects two-part pipes into groups according to their external similarity. Within these groups, there are styles of items that have gained popularity over time. Parallels for Kyiv finds from Ukrainian lands and other territories are provided. The evolution of some styles during the 17th — early 19th centuries is examined. For the seventeenth — early eighteenth century pipes of small sizes of three types: bud-shaped, fluted, pot-shaped are characteristic. Each type was designed with several styles. They are distinguished by the design of the bowl. Bud-shaped pipes had a spherical, hemispherical, disk-shaped, with a petal division, with a frequent division, shell-like lower part. Pot-shaped pipes were both rounded and elongated in height. The most homogeneous were fluted pipes. They were varied by simple or more decorative designs. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries styles of pipes have changed. Bud-shaped pipes with a petal division of the lower part of bowl acquired of new styles: tall, slender pipes covered with colored glaze; pipes with a shell-shaped bowl became very similar to them; as a development of this style — pipes with a crest-keel under the lower part of the bowl; style of large, similar in height and length of pipes, which could be both glazed and terracotta. Pipes with a part of the lower part of bowl also evolved in a similar way: there were large low pipes with a wide bowl and pipes of vertical proportions. Among the pot-shaped pipes tall large items with rhymed geometric and floral ornaments up to 7—8 cm in size were spread. A variant of such pipes were products decorated on both sides of the bowl with a flower-shaped medallion. Along with large specimens in the eighteenth century similar items of smaller sizes continued to be used. Since the beginning of the eighteenth century imported «oriental» or «Turkish» styles are becoming more and more popular — Ottoman-chibouk, «narcissus», «lily», etc. Such pipes came from the Black Sea coast, their copies could be made in Ukrainian cities, including in Kyiv.

Abstract:
Taking into account the factual material, research methods, and tasks, the authors trace the evolution/changes in Georgian comparative studies. It is notable that typological approaches, along with contact-genetic ones, are now actively used. These changes become firmly established due to the studies of iconic figures and periods, which attract the special attention of the scholars. Eurocentric concepts give place to other ones that have their basis in the study of the national literature and include philosophical, anthropological, psychological, and religious factors in the field of research. A lot of attention has been given to the principles of selecting literary texts for translation. The field of Georgian comparative studies has been remarkably changed/updated in the late 20th — early 21st centuries. Along with historians of literature, the theorists, critics, translators, and specialists in European and Oriental languages have been involved, which affected the level of comparative studies. Among the raised issues are reception, imagology, typology of anti-colonial narratives, genre transformations, postmodern discourse, etc. The character of Georgian-Ukrainian comparative studies changed drastically: it is obvious in the approaches/assessments of literary translation and in all connecting issues in general. Comparative studies came as close as possible to the theory of literature, which let the researchers (R. Khvedelidze, N. Naskidashvili, S. Chkhatarashvili, I. Mchedeladze) update the methodology and intensify their work on the diff erent levels of research, regardless of the presence/absence of contexts. The present surge in Georgian comparative studies started in the 2010s. It is connected to the organization of effective specialized research centers. Of great interest are the comparative studies aiming to show the history of Georgian literature as an individual version of the world literature (I. Ratiani), to identify the features of the Georgian literary canon based on the three main literary models (Middle Ages, Romanticism, post-Soviet), with a focus on the combination of ‘canonical’ and ‘non-canonical’ in innovative writing.
