Abstract:
2012 - 2013
In recent years the substantial advancements in Information and Communication Technologies enabled the development of original software solutions that can provide support to problems people face in their daily activities. Among the technical advancements that have fostered the development of such innovative applications, the gradual transition from stand-alone and centralized architectures to distributed ones and the explosive growth in the area of mobile communication have played a central role. The pro table combination of these advancements has led to the rise of the so-called Mobile Information Systems. Unfortunately, ful lling such a type of systems is very challenging and several aspects have to be taken into account during the design and development of both the front and back ends of the proposed solution. Within this context in this thesis we investigate two main aspects: 1) the elicitation of requirements and the design of usable mobile User Interfaces and 2) the information exchange in a back end combining heterogeneous services, more speci cally services based on the standards of the World Wide Web (W3C) and Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC). In particular, we develop a methodology to support the design of mobile solutions when usability requirements play a key role for the success of the whole system. We also present a solution for a seamless integration of services developed according to di erent standards with speci c focus on the issue of proper management of geospatial metadata in a W3C standards-oriented infrastructure. The result of our investigation is an extension for a key W3C standard for the metadata retrieval to support OGC metadata. The case study considered in our work is a Mobile Information System to be used by a community of farmers in Sri Lanka. [edited by Author]

Abstract:
Next-Generation Networks (NGNs) will converge the existing fixed and wireless networks. These networks rely on the IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem), introduced by the 3GPP. The presence service came into being in instant messaging applications. A user¿s presence information consists in any context that is necessary for applications to handle and adapt the user's communications. The presence service is crucial in the IMS to deploy ubiquitous services. SIMPLE is the standard protocol for handling presence and instant messages. This protocol disseminates users' presence information through subscriptions, notifications and publications. SIMPLE generates much signaling traffic for constantly disseminating presence information and maintaining subscriptions, which may overload network servers. This issue is even more harmful to the IMS due to its centralized servers. A key factor in the success of NGNs is to provide users with always-on services that are seamlessly part of their daily life. Personalizing these services according to the users' needs is necessary for the success of these services. To this end, presence information is considered as a crucial tool for user-based personalization. This thesis can be briefly summarized through the following contributions: We propose filtering and controlling the rate of presence publications so as to reduce the information sent over access links. We probabilistically model presence information through Markov chains, and analyzed the efficiency of controlling the rate of publications that are modeled by a particular Markov chain. The reported results show that this technique certainly reduces presence overload. We mathematically study the amount of presence traffic exchanged between domains, and analyze the efficiency of several strategies for reducing this traffic. We propose an strategy, which we call Common Subscribe (CS), for reducing the presence traffic exchanged between federated domains. We compare this strategy traffic with that generated by other optimizations. The reported results show that CS is the most efficient at reducing presence traffic. We analyze the load in the number of messages that several inter-domain traffic optimizations cause to the IMS centralized servers. Our proposed strategy, CS, combined with an RLS (i.e., a SIMPLE optimization) is the only optimization that reduces the IMS load; the others increase this load. We estimate the efficiency of the RLS, thereby concluding that the RLS is not efficient under certain circumstances, and hence this optimization is discouraged. We propose a queuing system for optimizing presence traffic on both the network core and access link, which is capable to adapt the publication and notification rate based on some quality conditions (e.g, maximum delay). We probabilistically model this system, and validate it in different scenarios. We propose, and implement a prototype of, a fully-distributed platform for handling user presence information. This approach allows integrating Internet Services, such as HTTP or VoIP, and optimizing these services in an easy, user-personalized way. We have developed SECE (Sense Everything, Control Everything), a platform for users to create rules that handle their communications and Internet Services proactively. SECE interacts with multiple third-party services for obtaining as much user context as possible. We have developed a natural-English-like formal language for SECE rules. We have enhanced SECE for discovering web services automatically through the Web Ontology Language (OWL). SECE allows composing web services automatically based on real-world events, which is a significant contribution to the Semantic Web. The research presented in this thesis has been published through 3 book chapters, 4 international journals (3 of them are indexed in JCR), 10 international conference papers, 1 demonstration at an international conference, and 1 national conference

Abstract:
Pedestrian navigation is a growing research field, which aims at developing services and applications that ensure the continuous positioning and navigation of people inside and outside covered areas (e.g. buildings). In this thesis, we propose a ubiquitous pedestrian navigation service based on user preferences and the most suitable efficient available positioning technology (e.g. WiFi, GNSS). Our main objective is to estimate continuously the position of a pedestrian carrying a smartphone equipped with a variety of technologies and sensors. First, we propose a novel positioning technology selection algorithm, called UCOSA for the complete ubiquitous navigation service in indoor and outdoor environments. UCOSA algorithm starts by inferring the need of a handover between the available positioning technologies on the overlapped coverage areas using fuzzy logic technique. If a handover process is required, a score is calculated for each captured Radio Frequency (RF) positioning technology. The score function consists of two parts: the first part represents the user preferences weights computed based on the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). Whereas, the second part provides the user requirements (normalized values). UCOSA algorithm also integrates the Pedestrian Dead Reckoning (PDR) positioning technique through the navigation process to enhance the estimation of the smartphone's position. Second, we focus on the RSS fingerprinting positioning technique as it is the most widely used technique, which principle is to return the smartphone's position by comparing the real time recorded RSS values with the radiomap (i.e. a database of previous stored RSS values). Most of radiomap are organized in a grid, formed or Reference Point (RP): we propose a new design of radiomap which complements the grid with other RPs located at the center of gravity of each grid square. Third, we address the challenge of constructing a graph for a multi-floor building. We propose an algorithm that starts by creating the horizontal graph of each floor, separately, and then, adds vertical links between the different floors. Finally, we implement a novel algorithm, called SIONA that calculates and displays in a continuous manner the pathway between two distinct points being located indoor or outdoor. We conduct several real experiments inside the campus of the University of Passau in Germany to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithms. They yield promising results in terms of continuity and accuracy (around 1.8 m indoor) of navigation service

Abstract:
We currently live surrounded by a myriad of computing devices running multiple applications. In general, the user experience on each of those scenarios is not adapted to each user’s specific needs, without personalization and integration across scenarios. Moreover, developers usually do not have the right tools to handle that in a standard and generic way. As such, a personalization platform may provide those tools. This kind of platform should be readily available to be used by any developer. Therefore, it must be developed to be available over the Internet. With the advances in IT infrastructure, it is now possible to develop reliable and scalable services running on abstract and virtualized platforms. Those are some of the advantages of cloud computing, which offers a model of utility computing where customers are able to dynamically allocate the resources they need and are charged accordingly. This work focuses on the creation of a cloud-based personalization platform built on a previously developed generic user modeling framework. It provides user profiling and context-awareness tools to third-party developers. A public display-based application was also developed. It provides useful information to students, teachers and others in a university campus as they are detected by Bluetooth scanning. It uses the personalization platform as the basis to select the most relevant information in each situation, while a mobile application was developed to be used as an input mechanism. A user study was conducted to assess the usefulness of the application and to validate some design choices. The results were mostly positive.

The recent proliferation of mobile phones, with their many associated sensors, has opened the door to an entirely new range of insights and applications with a host of accompanying privacy concerns. In this thesis, we explore techniques for privacy preservation, transparency, and auditing for mobile sensing applications and services. We demonstrate the feasibility of privacy-conscious defaults with the deployment of an open-source mobile sensing framework and examine the requirements for this as a basis of a forced-transparency system. This system is then examined within the scope of present legal and policy frameworks and assessed for use in both open and closed source mobile sensing platforms and frameworks. Finally, we highlight the use of a mobile application prototyping service as a means for early trend detection for future privacy research.

Abstract:
A new class of wireless sensor networks has recently appeared due to the pervasiness of cellular phones with embedded sensors, mobile Internet connectivity, and location technologies. This mobile wireless sensor network has the potential to address large-scale societal problems and improve the people's quality of life in a better, faster and less expensive fashion than current solutions based on static wireless sensor networks. Ubiquitous Sensing is the umbrella term used in this dissertation that encompasses location-based services, human-centric, and participatory sensing applications. At the same time, ubiquitous sensing applications are bringing a new series of challenging problems. This dissertation proposes and evaluates G-Sense, for Global-Sense, an architecture that integrates mobile and static wireless sensor networks, and addresses several new problems related to location-based services, participatory sensing, and human-centric sensing applications. G-Sense features the critical point algorithms, which are specific mechanisms to reduce the power consumption by continous sensing applications in cellular phones, and reduce the amount of data generated by these applications. As ubiquitous sensing applications have the potential to gather data from many users around the globe, G-Sense introduces a peer-to-peer system to interconnect sensing servers based on the locality of the data. Finally, this dissertation proposes and evaluates a multiobjective model and a hybrid evolutionary algorithm to address the efficient deployment of static wireless sensor nodes when monitoring critical areas of interest.

Context awareness means sending the right information to the right user at the righttime. Context is our environment, which can be anything around us such as location, lights, noises etc. To make the context interact with our mobile devices or sensors, there must be protocols for communication and data formats for the “sent” or “received”contextual information so we can give very specific context information tothe user. Since this communication and adaptive part is not well understood, in thispaper we are interested in investigating the technology used for adaptation. We willalso explain how this technology works to adapt itself to changes in the environment.

Abstract:

Tailorability in ubiquitous computing systems is needed at different levels, depending on the targeted end users. For inexperienced end users lacking computer competency, high level mechanisms for tailoring are needed. Systems such as ASTRA, which use a service oriented architecture, can provide such high level tailorability through service composition. With service composition, services can be combined and configured to form applications. However, using service composition introduces new challenges for end users. To find appropriate services, users need mechanisms for searching and browsing services. Equally important is it that users are able to understand how services work and what functionality they offer. Service descriptions can ease this task, but the problem with existing approaches to service descriptions is that they are not intended for end users and are hard to understand. This work looks at social tagging, which is a collaborative process where users attach labels or tags to items. This leads to user created metadata, as opposed to metadata created by experts. By introducing social tagging in ASTRA to describe services, users are provided with a framework for sharing their understanding of services with fellow users. To create a solution for social tagging for service descriptions, a thorough problem analysis was performed. The analysis considered the design space of tagging systems to find appropriate design choices in the problem context. Providing several tag visibility levels was identified as important, especially community tagging. The quality of tags as seen from the community members' perspective is likely to increase, as members of communities often share similar opinions and understandings. An important difference identified between existing tagging systems and tagging of services is that services can be embedded in physical devices. Thus, services can be discovered and accessed physically, which means that physical access to the services' tags should be supported. A requirements specification for a tagging system was specified, focusing on the platform requirements for basic tagging mechanisms, tag based navigation, and searching. The requirements lead to a design of platform architecture, aiming at extending the UbiCollab platform with social tagging functionality. The architecture uses a client/server solution, where the server service is shared among a network of users and handles public and community level tags. The client service is a local service which handles private tags, and acts as an intermediary between end user tools and the server service. A prototype of the platform services and an end user tool was implemented. The implementation is demonstrated through scenarios, showing possible uses of the tagging system.

Abstract:
Recently, there have been rapid developments in the fields of mobile and wireless technologies which have enabled the acquisition of information at anytime regardless of the location and mobility status of the users. However, despite the increasing popularity of mobile devices which are becoming an indispensable part of our everyday activities, the disappointing results regarding the adoption and use of mobile applications and data services lead scholars to question the understanding of the adoption and usage behaviour within these new wireless environments. The author believes that there could be attributes which are still unexplored and could provide an explanation why the mobile data services are still unsuccessful. The aim of this study is to explore, understand and highlight the role of place in the decision of the people to use mobile data services and thus to assist professionals and scholars to consider the importance of the attributes of place in the design of new applications and in the adoption and usage models of mobile technologies and services. In order to achieve this objective an exploratory in nature research was conducted combining conventional and innovative research methodologies. A model of place was generated which served as a sensitizing device in order to interpret, and analyse the collected data. The first phase of this research involved the understanding of the market in question and the selection of the appropriate case (mobile data services platform) to conduct the research. The second main phase of the research then sought to get a better understanding of how users experience place before deciding to use mobile data services. The research methods were applied within everyday settings with 30 users of the selected mobile data services platform, all of whom were selected according to specific criteria. The findings tend to suggest that participants did experience the different places in a similar way before deciding to use mobile data services.

The General Organization for Technical Education and Vocational Training, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, has developed a special feeding program for the students at its institutions. The effects of this program on the nutritional and health status of these students have not been evaluated yet, and since no published dietary research has been performed on Technical and Vocational young adult male students, the present work was undertaken to investigate the nutritional status of this community in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. After a pilot survey, it was decided to use a selfcompleted questionnaire combined with personal interview to investigate the nutritional status of 690 students randomly selected from the study population. Dietary data was collected by two methods: usual weekly intakes "diet history" and actual daily intakes "diet diary". The nutrient intakes were calculated using the unilever Dietary Analysis Program (UNIDAP). The statistical Package for the social Science (SPSS/PC+) was employed to analyse the data; statistical significance of relationships between certain sets of data was determined by chi-square analysis. Some general factors affecting the nutritional status of these students were identified, their nutritional habits and attitudes were investigated, and the average daily intakes of energy, the macronutrients, and selected micronutrients were calculated. The main results of this study shows that the majority of the study population are adolescent, moderately active individuals, and have lower than the standard range of the Body Mass Index; anaemia is the most stated health problem; meal-skipping and eating between meals are common habits amongst the students. Regarding nutrient intake, there was an energy, polyunsaturated fat, and vitamin C deficiency; adequate intake of saturated fat, dietary fibre, retinol, and zinc; more than adequate intake of protein, total fat, cholesterol, thiamin, riboflavin, calcium, and iron. Recommendations are given which aim to improve the nutrition of technical and vocational students.

Abstract:
Over the past decade, the world of social media is evolving at warp speed. In light of this rapid evolution, investigating social media users behaviour is top of the agenda for many managers and marketing researchers today (Kaplanand Haenlein, 2010). Indeed, still there are several areas in which we believe social media channels such as social networking, e-commerce, s-commerce, and blogs will make the most trivial evolution in years to come. Given the background provided about social media platforms adoption and strategic usage, there are some interesting and relevant topics that are particularly relevant in research on consumer behaviour towards these geo-information platforms and await further empirical exploration. Firstly, considering the cross-cultural aspects in studying the LBSN adoption on mobile phones, in a relationship social context, is a key driver of the growth and success of mobile LBSN and is even crucial to telecommunication operators to implement these services. Secondly, recently s-commerce is considered as a new form of social media that has arisen which due to its social features seem to have a great power of influence on consumers’ purchasing decision-making process. The marketing area has thus evolved from a time where marketers had the power of influence to today where consumers have a greater power of influence on their peers (Jaffe, 2010). Finally, with the advent of 4G mobile devices and the mobile location based advertising, consumers’ preferences can be pre-identified and advertising content can therefore be delivered to consumers at the right time and at the right place with the right message (Chen and Hsieh, 2012). Therefore, it becomes necessary and reasonable to enhance our understanding about the role of mobile advertising in mediating consumers shopping experience, since we begin to find ourselves bringing our mobile devices everywhere we go.

Abstract:
Advances in wireless technologies and the rapid development of integrated electronics have made wireless sensor networks (WSN) one of the key technologies of the Internet of Things (IoT). Thanks to the ability of these networks to measure the physical phenomena of their environment, process and communicate this information using wireless technologies, they have excelled in the development of applications that respond or adapt to the context of a user, as is the case of ubiquitous environments such as smart cities, industrial automation, e-health among others. In addition, the IoT has opened the possibility that intelligent objects or devices are also capable of exchanging status information, conditions and capacity in order to interact with each other, in the same way that human beings have done through systems based on presence. These systems require information of an event in real time to react in a timely manner to the conditions or context of the user or device. These applications open new challenges in the management of WSN resources, since these networks operate in environments that are generally prone to packet loss and consist of generally small nodes with limited resources in memory, processing, bandwidth and power. The main objective of this thesis is the development of several mechanisms that allow the adaptation of the Publish/Subscribe protocols to the characteristics and limitations of the WSN for the provision of ubiquitous services in the context of the IoT. In addition, QoS support is supplied through mechanisms that provide reliability and timeliness in the delivery of packets and data aggregation techniques are applied to be efficient in the power consumption and the WSN bandwidth. Our research proposes an architecture to provide a presence service for WSN based on a Publish/ Subscribe model distributed and focused on mechanisms such as the aggregation of data and the publication of messages on demand to achieve energy efficiency and bandwidth. All these mechanisms have been applied in the design of a system called PASH aimed at home control based on the concept of Ambient Assisted Living (AAL). The reliability provided by Publish/Subscribe protocols in WSN is of great importance in the design of applications that require receiving a message to react on time or in real time to an event. Initially, we focused our study on increasing the proportion of packet delivery (PDR) in the destination node through the improvement of reliability mechanisms. We evaluated the reliability mechanism of the MQTT-SN protocol and several proposed mechanisms of the CoAP protocol. From this evaluation, we propose a new and simple adaptive retransmission mechanism to respond to packet loss in the most appropriate way. Finally, we consider that applications such as: e-health, critical infrastructure control and monitoring, among others, must meet different QoS requirements, such as reliability and timeliness for each type of message received. In addition, data aggregation techniques play an important role in WSN to reduce power consumption and bandwidth. In this thesis, we propose a mechanism that provides the application with three different levels of QoS: we provide an improvement of our previous relay mechanism for reliability, we include the data aggregation in our reliability mechanism and we provide a timeliness mechanism in the delivery of packets.

Abstract:
Context-aware computing has been a rapidly growing research area, however its uses have been predominantly targeted at pervasive applications for smart spaces such as smart homes and workplaces. This research has investigated the use of location and other context data in access control policy, with the purpose of augmenting existing IP and application-layer security to provide fine-grained access control and effective enforcement of security policy. The use of location and other context data for security purposes requires that the technologies and methods used for acquiring the context data are trusted. This thesis begins with the description of a framework for the analysis of location systems for use in security services and critical infrastructure. This analysis classifies cooperative locations systems by their modes of operation and the common primitives they are composed of. Common location systems are analyzed for inherent security flaws and limitations based on the vulnerability assessment of location system primitives and the taxonomy of known attacks. An efficient scheme for supporting trusted differential GPS corrections is proposed, such that DGPS vulnerabilities that have been identified are mitigated. The proposal augments the existing broadcast messaging protocol with a number of new messages facilitating origin authentication and integrity of broadcast corrections for marine vessels. A proposal for a trusted location system based on GSM is presented, in which a model for tamper resistant location determination using GSM signaling is designed. A protocol for association of a user to a cell phone is proposed and demonstrated in a framework for both Web and Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) applications. After introducing the security issues of existing location systems and a trusted location system proposal, the focus of the thesis changes to the use of location data in authorization and access control processes. This is considered at both the IP-layer and the application-layer. For IP-layer security, a proposal for location proximity-based network packet filtering in IEEE 802.11 Wireless LANs is presented. This proposal details an architecture that extends the Linux netfilter system to support proximity-based packet filtering, using methods of transparent location determination through the application of a pathloss model to raw signal measurements. Our investigation of application-layer security resulted in the establishment of a set of requirements for the use of contextual information in application level authorization. Existing network authentication protocols and access control mechanisms are analyzed for their ability to fulfill these requirements and their suitability in facilitating context-aware authorization. The result is the design and development of a new context-aware authorization architecture, using the proposed modifications to Role-based Access Control (RBAC). One of the distinguishing characteristics of the proposed architecture is its ability to handle authorization with context-transparency, and provide support for real-time granting and revocation of permissions. During the investigation of the context-aware authorization architecture, other security contexts in addition to host location were found to be useful in application level authorization. These included network topology between the host and application server, the security of the host and the host execution environment. Details of the prototype implementation, performance results, and context acquisition services are presented.

Abstract:
Abstract The use of agent systems has increased enormously, especially in the field of mobile services. Intelligent services have also increased rapidly in the web. In this thesis, the utilization of software agent technology in mobile services and decentralized intelligent services in the multimedia business is introduced and described. Both Genie Agent Architecture (GAA) and Decentralized International and Intelligent Software Architecture (DIISA) are described. The common problems in decentralized software systems are lack of intelligence, communication of software modules and system learning. Another problem is the personalization of users and services. A third problem is the matching of users and service characteristics in web application level in a non-linear way. In this case it means that web services follow human steps and are capable of learning from human inputs and their characteristics in an intelligent way. This third problem is addressed in this thesis and solutions are presented with two intelligent software architectures and services. The solutions of the thesis are based on a combination of neural network and agent technology. To be more specific, solutions are based on an intelligent agent which uses certain black box information like Self-Organized Map (SOM). This process is as follows; information agents collect information from different sources like the web, databases, users, other software agents and the environment. Information is filtered and adapted for input vectors. Maps are created from a data entry of an SOM. Using maps is very simple, input forms are completed by users (automatically or manually) or user agents. Input vectors are formed again and sent to a certain map. The map gives several outputs which are passed through specific algorithms. This information is passed to an intelligent agent. The needs for web intelligence and knowledge representation serving users is a current issue in many business solutions. The main goal is to enable this by means of autonomous agents which communicate with each other using an agent communication language and with users using their native languages via several communication channels.

Abstract:
With the advent of portable devices (e.g., smartphones) and the advances in wireless networking technologies (e.g., WLAN, GPRS, UMTS), the vision of ubiquitous computing is becoming a reality. It aims to facilitate user tasks through the seamless utilization of heterogeneous computing and communication capabilities (represented as services) available in the environment. Service discovery, which is necessary for achieving the above goal, must be aware of the service's non-functional properties due to the challenges posed by ubiquitous computing, such as device portability and mobility. This thesis proposes an overall solution that supports QoS-aware service discovery in ubiquitous computing environments. Our contribution lies in substantiating QoS awareness in the following three aspects. Firstly, during the process of discovering services, the expiring wireless links resulting from device mobility are identified and avoided since they cause service failures and thus hamper service reliability. Secondly, as mu tiple services can be discovered, a comprehensive utility function is proposed to evaluate services in terms of their various non-functional properties, meanwhile taking into account the service user's preferences among them, for the purpose of selecting the best one. Thirdly, to avoid untrustworthy services, a distributed reputation mechanism is proposed to facilitate the evaluation of the service host's trustworthiness. The above three proposed solutions are extensively evaluated respectively, based on analysis and simulation. They are further incorporated into a middleware that supports QoS aware Web service discovery in ubiquitous computing environments. A prototype implementing the middleware is deployed and evaluated. The results show that the overhead introduced by QoS awareness seems reasonable.

Abstract:
The appropriate framework to capture and share location information with mobile applications enable the development of interfaces and interface techniques that empower users to obtain and share information on the go. As such, the work in this thesis makes two major contributions. First is the SeeVT framework, a locative backbone that uses currently-available data and equipment in the Virginia Tech and Blacksburg VA environments (e.g., wireless signal triangulation, GPS signals) to make available to applications the location of the device in use. Applications built on this framework have available knowledge of the region in which the userâ s device is located. Second is a set of four applications built on the SeeVT framework: SeeVT â Alumni Edition (a guide for alumni returning to campus, often after lengthy absences), the Newman Project (a library information system for finding books and other library resources), VTAssist (a information sharing system for disabled users), and SeeVT-Art (a guide for users in our local inn and conference center to learn about the art on display). Key in this contribution is our identification and discussion of three interface techniques that emerged from our development efforts: an images-first presentation of information, a lightweight mobile augmented reality style of interaction, and locative content affordances that provide ways to quickly input focused types of information in mobile situations.

Pervasive (or ubiquitous) computing is a paradigm for environments containing distributedinterconnected devices that embed electronics. These devices provide a remote access to numerousfunctionalities that assist us in our daily life. Service-Oriented Architectures are suitable to design softwarefor pervasive environments. Indeed, each device provides its own set of functionalities as services.Without any extra mechanism, users can only use a single service at a time. Nevertheless, their needsusually correspond to scenarios which involve a composition of multiple services, provided by multipledevices. In this thesis, we advocate that a pervasive system must, on the one hand, enable users to easily expresstheir needs through scenario creation and, on the other hand, propose to users a representation of theircontext so that they can benefit from both their environment and its changes. In addition, the presence ofseveral users implies that users must be able to collaborate. Our contribution, named SaS (Scenarios as Services), fulfils these requirements. It proposes aninteroperable approach that adapts to its environment. It provides users with a customizable andpersistent representation of their context and includes a scenario description language targeted to users.Scenarios are easy to control, customize and reuse. SaS schedules the step-by-step execution ofscenarios to adapt to environmental changes and benefit from user mobility (scenario execution split over time on successive distinct sites). Finally, SaS includes scenario sharing mechanisms which are abasis for collaboration. Abstract:

Abstract:
With the appearance of the paradigms of the ambient intelligence and ubiquitaire robotics, we attend the emergence of new ambient intelligent systems to create and manage environments or intelligent ecosystems in a intuitive and transparent way. These environments are intelligent spaces characterized in particular by the opening, the heterogeneousness, the uncertainty and the dynamicité of the entities which establish(constitute) them. These characteristics so lift(raise) considerable scientific challenges for the conception(design) and the implementation of an adequate intelligent system. These challenges are mainly among five: the abstraction of the representation of the heterogeneous entities, the management of the uncertainties, the reactivity in the events, the sensibility in the context and the auto-adaptation

Abstract:
As people age there is an overwhelming desire to remain in the familiar surroundings of the family home, what is called Aging in Place. But inevitable changes that occur in their lives force the aging adults and their families to consider a move to some form of institutional living. Living at a distance from one another, the adult child attempts to maintain peace of mind concerning the well-being of their aging parents but finds it to be a difficult task. I propose to address this problem by first proposing that technology can help minimize the anxieties experienced by the adult child concerning their aging parents well being by appropriately presenting information on the aging parents daily life. This technological design concept does not require that the aging parent input, or for that matter, do anything other than live their lives as they normally live them. Further, this technology provides this information in a manner that is continuously available to the adult child for either opportunistic or planned perusal. As a single instance of the technological design concept proposed above, the Digital Family Portrait embeds well-being related information into an item commonly found in homes, the picture in a picture frame. The Digital Family Portrait was first tested in a wizard-of-oz field trial, then redesigned based on the outcome of this initial field trial coupled with the results of two lab-based studies and a further informal evaluation. The redesigned Digital Family Portrait was built and installed in the home of an adult child while the sensors to drive it were installed in an aging parents home. A field trial of this installation lasting for one year was conducted. The result of this field trial was to find that the Digital Family Portrait was an acceptable means of resolving certain peace of mind issues for the adult child while not raising privacy. It was found to be used in a socially acceptable manner by the adult child while the aging parent to reported feeling less lonely.

Abstract:

Abstract:

This dissertation presents an approach to the software development in the Ubiquitous Computing, which instantiates the Rational Unified Process (RUP), based on Ontologies, Semantic Web Services, and Software Agents. Ontologies are employed to improve the description of the use context, enabling the applications to be context-aware. Semantic Web Services are used as software components distributed over the Internet, and are composed to perform complex tasks. Software Agents manages the applications using the Ontologies and the Semantic Web Services. A framework, called UBICK, was built to facilitate the design and the implementation of ubiquitous applications, based on components reuse. A case study illustrates the use of this approach in order to develop an Electronic Reflexive Portfolio in the medical education domain.

In this context, the aim of this thesis is to design and optimize a mobility aid system that covers not only transport services but also tourist services, cultural services and many others. The research presented in this thesis proposes the establishment of a Plateforme de Recherche et de composition des Services d'Aide à la Mobilité (PRoSAM) to optimize research, composition and distribution tasks of advanced mobility information. The dynamic and distributed aspects of the problem have led us to adopt an agent-oriented modeling approach to cope with the conditions of a ubiquitous environment. Thanks to a dynamic role switching strategy of user agents and an innovative negotiation protocol, customers are able to exchange services autonomously and to establish full or partial agreements in order to optimize communications over the network. Abstract:
Ubiquitous computing integrates computation into the environment, and enables users to move around and interact with computers more naturally than they currently do. This helps to address some of the traditional challenges of computer supported collaborative work (CSCW), as users are not bound to a desk and a personal computer, and are not forced to stay in a static environment where ad-hoc collaboration is impossible. UbiCollab is a platform for the support of ubiquitous collaboration, and it provides such functionality as context-awareness and automatic device discovery. The vision of UbiCollab is to be both flexible and extendible, so that it can provide ubiquitous collaboration support for many different existing and non-existing domains and settings. A previous study has compiled a set of requirements that needs to be fulfilled in order for a platform to reach this vision. This work re-designs the architecture and the platform components of UbiCollab so that they conform to these requirements. OSGi is chosen as the underlying architecture, supporting the requirements of flexibility and extendibility, and a suitable OSGi framework for the platform is chosen. The platform components and their application programming interfaces (APIs) are designed, and a selected number of these are implemented with full or partial functionality. A testbed of applications and external services is used throughout development to test the flexibility and functionality of the platform and the completeness of the APIs.

Abstract:

The research presented in this thesis investigates the design challenges associated with the development and use of mobile applications and tools for supporting collaboration in educational activities. These technologies provide new opportunities to promote and enhance collaboration by engaging learners in a variety of activities across different places and contexts. A basic challenge is to identify how to design and deploy mobile tools and services that could be used to support collaboration in different kinds of settings. There is a need to investigate how to design collaborative learning processes and to support flexible educational activities that take advantage of mobility. The main research question that I focus on is the identification of factors that influence the design of mobile collaborative learning.

The theoretical foundations that guide my work rely on the concepts behind computer supported collaborative learning and design-based research. These ideas are presented at the beginning of this thesis and provide the basis for developing an initial framework for understanding mobile collaboration. The empirical results from three different projects conducted as part of my efforts at the Center for Learning and Knowledge Technologies at Växjö University are presented and analyzed. These results are based on a collection of papers that have been published in two refereed international conference proceedings, a journal paper, and a book chapter. The educational activities and technological support have been developed in accordance with a grounded theoretical framework. The thesis ends by discussing those factors, which have been identified as having a significant influence when it comes to the design and support of mobile collaborative learning.

The findings presented in this thesis indicate that mobility changes the contexts of learning and modes of collaboration, requiring different design approaches than those used in traditional system development to support teaching and learning. The major conclusion of these efforts is that the learners’ creations, actions, sharing of experiences and reflections are key factors to consider when designing mobile collaborative activities in learning. The results additionally point to the benefit of directly involving the learners in the design process by connecting them to the iterative cycles of interaction design and research.

The growing interest in High-Density Fixed Service Satellite systems (HDFSS) has led to studies at the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) aiming the development of a recommendation for guidance on its implementation in order to minimize interference affecting other telecommunications services. Such systems are of interest due to their flexibility in the ubiquitous deployment of small terminals, Without the need for coordination. In order to regulate the implementation of such systems, the Study Group 4 of the ITU Radiocommunication Sector, responsible for the fixed-satellite service, has developed and suggested studies aimed at creating a recommendation containing methodologies for frequency sharing involving earth stations (terminals) ubiquitously distributed. Thus, in 2003, at the World Radiocommunication Conference of the ITU, specific frequency bands for HDFSS systems operation have been addressed, and most of the frequency bands identified are shared, on a primary basis, With the terrestrial fixed service systems (FS) and, for this reason, such studies for regulation and control of this share has become important. The ITU main motivation for these studies is the analysis of the interference caused by the HDFSS systems deployed in a country, into the communication sevices of neighboring countries. In this scenario, this paper proposes a methodology for evaluating interference produced by a ubiquitously distributed terminals into FS systems. This method aims at determining a coordination region, thus enabling terminals to be freely deployed outside this region, without producing unacceptable levels of interference into the FS receivers.

Abstract:
Smart Grids aim to transform the current electric grid into a "smarter" network where energy production is decentralized and automated, which facilitates the integration of renewable energy resources. This evolution is made possible thanks to the use of a communication network for the multiple heterogeneous data exchanges of the Smart Grids. Hence, the aim of this thesis is to propose an efficient communication paradigm in terms of quality of service for Smart Grids based on wireless sensor networks.First, we study data routing in Smart Grids with the RPL standard. Nevertheless, RPL is not suitable for Smart Grid applications in terms of quality of service. Therefore, we propose an objective function for RPL that takes different features of both nodes and links into consideration. Results show that our approach improves network performance compared to existing solutions in terms of packet delivery ratio, network lifetime, latency and traffic differentiation. Then, we also propose a more efficient data collection by introducing self-organization and data reduction for these wireless sensors. The goal is to predict the value of the measured data rather than transmitting them. Another explored approach is to aggregate the different messages sent across the network while considering their different requirements in terms of quality of service. These two approaches reduce the energy consumption while respecting the requirements of the different applications of the Smart Grids

Ubiquitous computing (Ubicomp) increases in proliferation. Multiple and ever growing in numbers, computational devices are now at the users' disposal throughout the physical environment, while simultaneously being effectively invisible. Consequently, a significant challenge is service discovery. Services may for instance be physical, such as printing a document, or virtual, such as communicating information. The existing solutions, such as Bluetooth and UPnP, address part of the issue, specifically low-level physical interconnectivity. Still absent are solutions for high-level challenges, such as connecting users with appropriate services. In order to provide appropriate service offerings, service discovery in Ubicomp must take the users' context, tasks, goals, intentions, and available resources into consideration. It is possible to divide the high-level service-discovery issue into two parts; inadequate service models, and insufficient common-sense models of human activities.

This thesis contributes to service discovery in Ubicomp, by arguing that in order to meet these high-level challenges, a new layer is required. Furthermore, the thesis presents a prototype implementation of this new service-discovery architecture and model. The architecture consists of hardware, ontology-layer, and common-sense-layer. This work addresses the ontology and common-sense layers. Subsequently, implementation is divided into two parts; Oden and Magubi. Oden addresses the issue of inadequate service models through a combination of service-ontologies in concert with logical reasoning engines, and Magubi addresses the issue of insufficient common-sense models of human activities, by using common sense models in combination with rule engines. The synthesis of these two stages enables the system to reason about services, devices, and user expectations, as well as to make suitable connections to satisfy the users' overall goal.

Designing common-sense models and service ontologies for a Ubicomp environment is a non-trivial task. Despite this, we believe that if correctly done, it might be possible to reuse at least part of the knowledge in different situations. With the ability to reason about services and human activities it is possible to decide if, how, and where to present the services to the users. The solution is intended to off-load users in diverse Ubicomp environments as well as provide a more relevant service discovery.
