Abstract:
With the achievement of autonomous flight for small unmanned aircraft, currently ongoing research is expanding the capabilities of systems utilizing such vehicles for various tasks. This allows shifting the research focus from the individual systems to task execution benefits resulting from interaction and collaboration of several aircraft. Given that some available high-fidelity simulations do not yet support multi-vehicle scenarios, the presented work introduces a framework which allows several individual single-vehicle simulations to be combined into a larger multi-vehicle scenario with little to no special requirements towards the single-vehicle systems. The created multi-vehicle system offers real-time software-in-the-loop simulations of swarms of vehicles across multiple hosts and enables a single operator to command and control a swarm of unmanned aircraft beyond line-of-sight in geometrically correct two-dimensional cluttered environments through a multi-hop network of data-relaying intermediaries. This dissertation presents the main aspects of the developed system: the underlying software framework and application programming interface, the utilized inter- and intra-system communication architecture, the graphical user interface, and implemented algorithms and operator aid heuristics to support the management and placement of the vehicles. The effectiveness of the aid heuristics is validated through a human subject study which showed that the provided operator support systems significantly improve the operators' performance in a simulated first responder scenario. The presented software is released under the Apache License 2.0 and, where non-open-source parts are used, software packages with free academic licenses have been chosen--resulting in a framework that is completely free for academic research.

Abstract:
The communication range between a civilian Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) and a Ground Control Station (GCS) is affected by the government regulations that determine the use of frequency bands and constrain the amount of power in those frequencies. The application of multiple UAVs in search and rescue operations for example demands a reliable, long-range inter-UAV communication. The inter-UAV communication is the ability of UAVs to exchange data among themselves, thus forming a network in the air. This ability could be used to extend the range of communication by using a decentralized routing technique in the network. To provide this ability to a fleet of autonomous dirigible UAVs being developed at the University of Ottawa, a new communication framework was introduced and implemented. Providing a true mesh networking based on a novel routing protocol, the framework combines long-range radios at 900 MHz Industrial, Scientific and Medical (ISM) band with the software integrated into the electronics platform of each dirigible. With one radio module per dirigible the implemented software provides core functionalities to each UAV, such as exchanging flight control commands, telemetry data, and photos with any other UAV in a decentralized network or with the GCS. We made use of the advanced networking tools of the radio modules to build capabilities into the software for route tracing, traffic prioritization, and minimizing self-interference. Initial test results showed that without acknowledgements, packets can be received in the wrong order and cause errors in the transmission of photos. In addition, a transmission in a presence of a third broadcasting node slows down by 4-6 times. Based on these results our software was improved to control to flow of transmit data making the fragmentation, packetization, and reassembly of photos more reliable. Currently, using radios with half-wavelength dipole antennas we can achieve a one-hop communication range of up to 5 km with the radio frequency line-of-sight (RF LOS). This can be extended further by adding as many radio nodes as needed to act as intermediate hops.

Abstract:
In the aerial robotic community, a growing interest for Multi-Robot Systems (MRS) appeared in the last years. This is thanks to i) the technological advances, such as better onboard processing capabilities and higher communication performances, and ii) the promising results of MRS deployment, such as increased area coverage in minimum time. The development of highly efficient and affordable fleet of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAVs) of small size has paved the way to new large-scale applications, that demand such System of Systems (SoS) features in areas like security, disaster surveillance, inundation monitoring, search and rescue, infrastructure inspection, and so on. Such applications require the robots to identify their environment and localize themselves. These fundamental tasks can be ensured by the exploration mission. In this context, this thesis addresses the cooperative exploration of an unknown environment sensed by a team of UAVs with embedded vision. We propose a multi-robot framework where the key problem is to cooperatively choose specific regions of the environment to be simultaneously explored and mapped by each robot in an optimized manner in order to reduce exploration time and, consequently, energy consumption. Each UAV is able to performSimultaneous Localization And Mapping (SLAM) with a visual sensor as the main input sensor. To explore the unknown regions, the targets – selected from the computed frontier points lying between free and unknown areas – are assigned to robots by considering a trade-off between fast exploration and getting detailed grid maps. For the sake of decision making, UAVs usually exchange a copy of their local map; however, the novelty in this work is to exchange map frontier points instead, which allow to save communication bandwidth. One of the most challenging points in MRS is the inter-robot communication. We study this part in both topological and typological aspects. We also propose some strategies to cope with communication drop-out or failure. Validations based on extensive simulations and testbeds are presented

Abstract:
Consumer drones have used both standards such as Wi-Fi as well as proprietary communication protocols, such as DJI's OcuSync. While these methods are well suited to certain flying scenarios, they are limited in range to around 4.3 miles. Government and military unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) controlled through satellites allow for a global reach in a low-latency environment. To address the range issue of commercial UAVs, this thesis investigates using standardized cellular technologies for command and control of UAV systems. The thesis is divided into five chapters: Chapter 1 is the introduction to the thesis. Chapter 2 describes the equipment used as well as the test setup. This includes the drone used, the cellular module used, the microcontroller used, and a description of the software written to collect the data. Chapter 3 describes the data collection goals, as well as locations in the sky that were flown in order to gather experimental data. Finally, the results are presented in Chapter 4, which draws limited correlation between the collected data and flight readiness Chapter 5 wraps up the thesis with a conclusion and future areas for research are also presented.

Abstract:
Recently, the use of drones is booming in many areas, newly in parcel or meal shippement. Analogue to this deployment, the flexibility and resilience requirements of cellular networks are not always met by terrestrial base stations, mainly in the case of unforeseen events, such as natural disasters, gatherings or sports events. One promising solution is to benefit from the availability of drones in order to fulfill the temporary failures of cellular networks by helping them to meet the demands by extending the coverage using the access points installed onboard the UAVs. Although drones offer rapid deployment, the placement becomes one of the key issues. In this thesis we focus on this type of networks and in the drone placement by proposing a deployment method based on an analogy with Coulomb's law, the users and the drones acting like electric charges, the drones being attracted by users

Abstract:
The High Frequency (HF) band, 3-30 MHz, is used when no infrastructure for long-range communications is available. New technology, such as digital signal processing enables higher data rate in the HF band, which in 2000s has resulted in increased commercial use. Reflection of radio waves in the ionosphere allows for beyond horizon communication, and are a unique property of the HF band. However, properties of the ionosphere are highly dependent of radiation from the sun, which varies with geographical location, season and time. The use of unmanned areal vehicle (UAV) has increased during the past years. In this project it is investigated if a HF transmitter can be placed on a small UAV platform. The objective is to get an estimation of the probabilities for successful HF transfer of real-time data from a small UAV. For example, the data could be sensor- or position data. When studying a complex problem having several parameters, such as a HF communication system, it is necessary to use the systems approach. This report illustrates the impact of size of the transmitting antenna, transmitter output power and bandwidth as well as different sources of noise and its levels. The results and analysis, made in this project, shows that there are feasible solutions for every tested case except at very high latitudes. Frequency planning, that is finding the less occupied channel, is almost as important as maximizing the signal to noise ratio. This thesis describes the work performed at Saab Aeronautics in Linkoping during 2011. The work was to study and develop distributed and centralized methods for analysis of the decision making in a group of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). In addition to this, some simple scenarios were studied and the work was implemented in C++ as the simulator ComDec. The literature review presented in the report provides knowledge of strategies for collaborative UAVs (communication and decision making), understanding of the problems/constraints that are relevant for data links and insight into the algorithms for decision making and autonomy. This work has resulted in a theoretical analysis of suitable design for decision making in a group of interacting autonomous UAVs. Existing methods for distributed and centralized decision making are implemented and a demonstration ofthe outcome are presented in the thesis. It is further shown how various communication problems and disturbances affect the decision making process. Finally, advantages and disadvantages of the selected strategies (communication and decision making) are discussed.

Abstract:
An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) swarm allows for a more time-efficient method of searching a specified area than a single UAV or piloted plane. There are a variety of factors that affect how well an area is surveyed. We specifically analyzed the effect both vehicle properties and communication had on the swarm search performance. We used non-dimensionalization so the results can be applied to any domain size with any type of vehicle. We found that endurance was the most important factor. Vehicles with good endurance sensed approximately 90% to 100% of the grid, even when other properties were lacking. If the vehicles lacked endurance, the amount of area the vehicles could sense at a given time step became more important and 10% more of the grid was sensed with the increase in sensed area. The maneuverability of the vehicles was measured as the vehicles' radii of turn compared to the search domain size. The maneuverability mattered the most in the middle-range endurance cases. In some cases 30% more of the grid was searched with improving vehicle maneuverability. In addition, we also examined four communication cases with different amounts of information regarding vehicle location. We found communication increased search performance by at least 6.3%. However, increasing the amount of information only changed the performance by 2.3%. We also studied the impact the range of vehicle communication had on search performance. We found that simulations benefited most from increasing the communication range when the amount of area sensed at a given time step was small and the vehicles had good maneuverability. We also extended the optimization to a multi-objective process with the inclusion of target tracking. We analyzed how the different weightings of the objectives affected the performance outcomes. We found that target tracking performance dramatically changes based on the given weighting of each objective and saw an increase of approximately 52%. However, the amount of the grid that was sensed only dropped by approximately 10%.

Abstract:
When reconstructing the Earth in 3D, the imagery can come from various mediums, including satellites, planes, and drones. One significant benefit of utilizing drones in combination with a Visual Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (V-SLAM) system is that specific areas of the world can be accurately mapped in real-time at a low cost. Drones can essentially be equipped with any camera sensor, but most commercially available drones use a monocular rolling shutter camera sensor. Therefore, on behalf of Maxar Technologies, multiple monocular V-SLAM systems were studied during this thesis, and ORB-SLAM3 and LDSO were determined to be evaluated further. In order to provide an accurate and reproducible result, the methods were benchmarked on the public datasets EuRoC MAV and TUM monoVO, which includes drone imagery and outdoor sequences, respectively. A third dataset was collected with a DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise Dual drone to evaluate how the methods would perform with a consumer-friendly drone. The datasets were used to evaluate the two V-SLAM systems regarding the generated 3D map (point cloud) and estimated camera trajectory. The results showed that ORB-SLAM3 is less impacted by the artifacts caused by a rolling shutter camera sensor than LDSO. However, ORB-SLAM3 generates a sparse point cloud where depth perception can be challenging since it abstracts the images using feature descriptors. In comparison, LDSO produces a semi-dense 3D map where each point includes the pixel intensity, which improves the depth perception. Furthermore, LDSO is more suitable for dark environments and low-texture surfaces. Depending on the use case, either method can be used as long as the required prerequisites are provided. In conclusion, monocular V-SLAM systems are highly dependent on the type of sensor being used. The differences in the accuracy and robustness of the systems using a global shutter and a rolling shutter are significant, as the geometric artifacts caused by a rolling shutter are devastating for a pure visual pipeline.

This thesis proposes the design of the UAV-LMDS communication system for military and commercial use. The UAV-LMDS system is a digital, wireless communication system that provides service using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) flying at 60,000 ft. acting as communication hubs. This thesis provides background information on UAV-LMDS system elements, a financial analysis, theory, link budgets, system component design and implementation issues. To begin the design, we develop link budgets that are used to characterize system parameters. We present detailed antenna designs for the antennas aboard the UAV. We also present communication equipment block diagrams. Included are technical details on military and commercial geostationary satellites used to link transmissions in the system. Implementation issues in the military system are discussed. Mobility and the effects of vegetation in the propagation path are investigated and a co-channel interference study is done. This thesis shows that by using UAVs and LMDS, a viable, broadband, wireless communications system can be created for military and commercial use.

Abstract:
Synchronization of distributed time difference of arrival (TDOA) sensor networks can be performed using reference signals from GPS satellites. This method provides high accuracy, but is vulnerable to jamming, and is not reliable enough to be used in military applications. A solution that does not depend on any signals transmitted from external actors is preferred. One way to achieve this is to use reference signals transmitted from a UAV. A UAV is suitable since only local synchronization for a geographically restricted area is necessary. The local synchronization is achieved by estimating the time-delay between the transmission and reception of a reference signal. The estimated time-delay can be used to detect drifts in the clocks of the TDOA sensors. This thesis analyzes com- mon reference signals, to evaluate which provide high accuracy for time-delay estimation, and what properties of the signals influence the estimation accuracy the most. The simulations show that the time-delay estimation performance can reach the same accuracy as synchronization against GPS for different types of signals. An increased bandwidth is more important than an increased signal length or signal-to-noise ratio to improve the estimation accuracy.

Abstract:
This master thesis studied methods for tracking and localising a moving target from an autonomous seeker drone. Feasible methods for automatic control of the seeker drone and different antenna configurations were explored as well. Two different tracking filters and two different controllers were tested for this purpose. The algorithm was developed in Python and MATLAB. The evaluation of the filters and controllers was done both theoretically with simulations but also practically with flight tests. Performance and robustness were measured by examining the estimated target position and the smoothness of the seeker path. Both filters performed satisfactorily, the same conclusion could be made for the automatic controllers as well. Regardless of the sufficient results, for future work there are several aspects which can be improved. The communication with the drone’s motors, the noise models and one of the automatic controllers are all examples of areas which canbe improved further.

Abstract:
In the emerging industry of small unmanned vehicles, pioneered by small businesses and research institutions, a suitable combat system test platform is needed. Computer simulations are useful, but do not provide the definitive proof of effective operation necessary for deployment of a combat system. What is needed is an affordable simulated weapons system that enables live flight testing without the used of live weaponry. A framework is developed here for the construction of a simulated weapon using Free Space Optical (FSO) infrared communication. It is developed in such a way to ensure compatibility with a variety of platforms including ground and aerial vehicles, so that identical but configurable modules can be used on any vehicle that is to take place in a live combat simulation. A proof-of-concept implementation of this modular laser combat system framework is also presented and tested. The implemented system shows the value of such a simulated weapons system and future areas of improvement are also explored.

Unmanned aerial systems (UASs) have a great potential to enhanced situational awareness in public safety operations. Many UASs operating in the same airspace can cause mid-air collisions. NASA and the FAA are developing a UAS traffic management (UTM) system, which could be used in public safety operations to manage the UAS airspace. UTM relies on an existing communication backhaul, however natural disasters may disrupt existing communications infrastructure or occur in areas where no backhaul exists. This thesis outlines a robust communications alternative that interfaces a fleet of UASs with a UTM service supplier (USS) over a mesh network. Additionally, this thesis outlines an algorithm for vehicle-to-vehicle discovery and communication over the mesh network.

Abstract:
This study is a business case analysis of a Medium Altitude Global ISR Communication (MAGIC) UAV system. The MAGIC platform is analyzed together with three other medium-altitude ISR platforms. A cost model for RDT and E and O and S for the MAGIC is developed based on historical data. A baseline case for MAGIC is then developed with Average Production Unit Cost (APUC) of $17M, RDT and E cost of $510M, and discount factor of 0.025 for the analysis. A Net Present Value of Life Cycle Cost (NPVLCC) and a return ratio as defined by the ratio of the NPVLCC of alternative platforms to the NPVLCC of MAGIC are used in the analysis. Results are presented for 500, 1000, 2000, and 3000 nm ranges. MAGIC outperforms Reaper and Global Hawk, while Predator outperforms MAGIC at the 500 nm. MAGIC outperforms all others in the 1000, 2000 and 3000 nm range. The analysis is extended to cover other payloads for the same ranges. The results show that MAGIC is favored over Reaper for 1000 nm and 2000 nm range, and the return ratio is marginal for 500 nm. MAGIC is favored in all ranges when compared with Global Hawk.

The design of a low cost electronically steered array feed (ESAF) is implemented and tested. The ESAF demonstrated satellite tracking capabilities over four degrees. The system was compared to a commercial low-noise block downconverter (LNBF) and was able to receive the signal over a wider angle than the commercial system. Its signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) performance was poor, but a proof of concept for a low cost ESAF used for tracking is demonstrated. Two compact low profile dual circularly polarized (CP) reflector feed antenna designs are also analyzed. One of the designs is a passive antenna dipole array over an electromagnetic band gap (EBG) surface. It demonstrated high isolation between ports for orthogonal polarizations while also achieving quality dual CP performance. Simulations and measurements are shown for this antenna. The other antenna was a microstrip cross antenna. This antenna demonstrated high gain and quality CP but had a large side lobe and low isolation between ports. A global positioning system (GPS) denied multiple input multiple output (MIMO) radar for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is simulated and tested in a physical optics scattering model. This model is developed and tested by comparing simulated and analytical results. The radar uses channel matrices generated from the MIMO antenna system. The channel matrices are then used to generate correlation matrices. A matrix distance between actively received correlation matrices to stored correlation matrices is used to estimate the position of the UAV. Simulations demonstrate the ability of the radar algorithm to determine its position when flying along a previously mapped path.

Technological advances and research are pushing the application of unmanned vehicles in exciting directions. This thesis emphasis is on cost estimation for a new unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with swarm applications. The new swarm UAV theoretical can be designed to emulate the current unmanned aerial system (UAS) mission, and expand upon the communication relay mission. Small UASs have a line-of-sight capability limitation that leaves room for improvement. The UAVs organic to the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) are the primary focus for this analysis because organic USMC UAVs are habitually small UAVs. The analysis will determine a rough cost estimation range for a future AV with new technology. Based on the adaptation of networking topologies and research, the communication relay mission is a feasible capability to Peruse in future swarm UAVs. The analysis suggests that a swarm UAV is comparable in cost to legacy UAVs currently in service in the USMC.

Abstract:
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) are expected to be deployed both by government and industry. Rules for integrating commercial UAVs into a nation's airspace still need to be defined, safety being the main concern. As part of this thesis, the communication needs of UAVs as important requirement for UAV integration into the national airspace is considered. Motivated by recent prediction of UAV quantities, revealing the importance of Micro UAVs (MAV) and Small UAVs (SUAV), the thesis determines spectral requirements for control and non-payload communication (CNPC). We show that spectral efficiency, particularly in the downlink, is critical to the large-scale deployment of UAVs. Due to the limited range of small SUAV and MAV systems, communication between air and ground elements of these UAVs is established through radio Line-of-Sight (LoS) links. Ultimately, efficient LoS UAV systems are based on a better understanding of channels in the downlink, i.e. air-to-ground (A2G) channels, and also on efficient waveform as well as spectrum management implementation. Because of limited research in wideband aeronautical channel modeling, we have derived an A2G channel prototype applicable to SUAV and MAV. As part of the research at Wire- less@VT in designing and prototyping Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) waveforms, this thesis derives the optimal parameters for SUAV and MAV A2G channels. Finally, the thesis discusses concepts that relate flight route with spectrum management as well as opportunities for a more dynamic spectrum allocation for UAV communication systems.

Abstract:
The unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are also known as drones. Recently, UAVs have attracted the next generation researchers due to their flexible, dynamic, and cost-effective deployment, etc. Moreover, the UAVs have a wide range of application domains, such as rescue operation in the remote area, military surveillance, emergency application, etc. Given the UAVs are appropriately deployed, the UAVs provide continuous and reliable connectivity, on-demand, and cost-effective features to the desired destination in the wireless communication system. Thus, the UAVs can be a great choice to deploy as a mobile relay in co-existence with the base stations (BSs) on the ground to serve the 5G wireless users. In this thesis, the UAV-assisted mobile relay (UAV-MR) in the next generation wireless networks has been studied, which also considers the UAV-MR physical layer security. The proposed system also considers one ground user, one BS on the ground, and active presence of multiple eavesdroppers, situated nearby the ground user. The locations of these nodes (i.e., the ground user, the BS, and the eavesdroppers) are considered fixed on the ground. Moreover, the locations of the eavesdroppers are not precisely known to the UAV-MR. Thus, this thesis aims to maximize the achievable secrecy rate, while the BS sends the secure information to the ground user via the UAV-MR. However, the UAV-MR has some challenges to deploy in wireless networks, such as 3D deployment, robust resource allocation, secure UAV-MR to ground communication, the channel modeling, the UAV-MR flight duration, and the UAV-MR robust trajectory design, etc. Thus, this project investigates the UAV-MR assisted wireless networks, which addresses those technical challenges to guarantee efficient UAV-MR communication. Moreover, the mathematical frameworks are formulated to support the proposed model. An efficient algorithm is proposed to maximize the UAV-MR achievable secrecy rate. Finally, the simulation results show the improved performance for the UAV-MR assisted next-generation networks.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to study the effectiveness of the electronic systems of communication that are widely used during different phases of construction projects, and to evaluate their contribution toward the success of projects. The mechanism of their interaction with other factors leading to strategic benefits was investigated. A holistic approach was adopted taking context and time into consideration in order to investigate the connection between the two axes, with project success as a strategic dimension on one hand, and the mechanism of communication media on the other. The research was divided into two phases. Phase one was devoted to the identification of project's success criteria and the success factors in the UAE environment, using a survey based mainly on interviews with professional project managers. Phase two addressed the issue of electronic communication through two case studies. The first case study is based on action research looking at the effects of the use of simple electronic communication in construction projects. The second case study was preceded by the selection of reliable ICT systems available for construction projects in UAE. One of these selected systems, was implemented connecting the main stakeholders in all phases of a major construction project in UAE, and became the subject of investigation of this part of the research. This long-term critical case study proceeded following-up the project progress. Interviews with key team members were undertaken to observe the communicational behaviour towards decision making during the stages of design and construction, and in the operation of this project. The results acquired in the case studies have confirmed the benefits hypothesised. However, the investigation continued to explain few unresolved results. An explanation has emerged through pattern matching based on two communication theories, namely the two step flow theory of Lazarsfeld, and the transition theory. A dynamic model has been put forward, linking the aforementioned axes of success and communication, and making use of the risk management process in order to activate, maintain, and formalise the mechanism of interaction between project success and communication. The outcome of this research can help construction management professionals plan and implement strategic communication plans, leading to enhancement of opportunities for projects' success. The findings of the case studies provided a good reference for implementation in the UAE environment and a reliable starting point for scenarios of validation in other contexts. The developers of electronic systems for project content management can benefit from this soft approach. The thesis is concluded by emphasising a multi-disciplinary interpretation when considering the duality of project success and communication.

Abstract:
The state-of-art technologies keep generating new ways of improving on the performance of the old systems. Array antennas, one of the continuously improving technologies, brought many benefits to our life. The superiorities of array antennas remove the disadvantages of the old technology radars such as great sidelobes, vulnerability to the jammers, and degradation effect of the clutter. Array antennas find many applications on different areas. Today, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have begun to be seen in our life more often than before. UAVs prevent pilot loss of life. They carry out a variety of military and civilian missions such as surveillance and reconnaissance, target recognition, battle damage assessment, EW, search and rescue, and traffic monitoring. An important use of the UAVs is troop support, carrying out reconnaissance and surveillance missions, which requires maintaining a data-link with troops in order to send any data collected, such as video images, or audio. During operations it is necessary to continuously maintain a data and control link with the operator. This requires the ground station antenna to track the UAV so the antenna beam is pointed properly. The purpose of this research is to design and build an array to angle-track a UAV and, eventually, to accomplish the data transfer from the UAV to the ground station.

Abstract:
Analysing professionalisation reveals a complex mechanism, involving the production of an activity as well as its value, the search for a stabilisation together with the triggering of contest ; hence a study towards elaborating an agreement on a professional form. The emergence of the directors of communication is in line with the history of public relation professions. The latter have adjusted to an evolution over wich they had incomplete control, despite regulations and attempts to monopolisation, through associations and professional code od ethics. They have thus called up a rhetoric borrowing mainly from the civic register, in reference to the words of information, and extented their boundaries to the milits of what is acceptable from the viewpoint of the arguments at the basis of the "relationist" model. These limits will be overstepped bu some communication leaders ; they acquire significant visibility, closely related to the extension of their field of activities and the recognition of their strategic role, legitimized by an explicit compromise in the trade register. This movement is translated into a wealth of surveys on the professions of communication. Their study sheds light on certain tensions between different models, tensions relative to the definition of the qualifications, the conditions of admission, and the definition of the scopes of activities. The surveys finally show how the "dircom" model becomes prevalent. This succes in achieved through the institution of the "dircom" locality. Its study makes it possible to feature wxho works on the construction, the circulation of the dominant model, and the regulation of the tensions within and without the firm. The transformations of the professions are also linked with the evolution of the techniques of social mediation, and that of firm values

Full text
Abstract:
The use of aerial platforms such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), popularly known as drones, has emerged as a promising solution for providing reliable and cost-effective wireless communications. In particular, UAVs can be quickly and efficiently deployed to support cellular networks and enhance their quality-of-service (QoS) by establishing line-of-sight communication links. With their inherent attributes such as mobility, flexibility, and adaptive altitude, UAVs admit several key potential applications in wireless systems. Remarkably, despite these inherent advantages of UAVbased communications, little work has analyzed the performance tradeoffs associated with using UAVs as aerial wireless platforms. The key goal of this dissertation is to develop the analytical foundations for deployment, performance analysis, and optimization of UAV-enabled wireless networks. This dissertation makes a number of fundamental contributions to various areas of UAV communications that include: 1) Efficient deployment of UAVs, 2) Performance evaluation and optimization, and 3) Design of new flying, three-dimensional (3D) wireless systems. For deployment, using tools from optimization theory, holistic frameworks are developed for the optimal 3D placement of UAV base stations in uplink and downlink scenarios. The results show that the proposed deployment approaches significantly improve the downlink coverage for ground users, and enable ultra-reliable and energy-efficient uplink communications in Internet of Things (IoT) applications. For performance optimization, a novel framework is developed for maximizing the performance of a UAV-based wireless system, in terms of data service, under UAVs’ flight time constraints. To this end, using the mathematical framework of optimal transport theory, the optimal cell associations, that lead to a maximum data service to ground users within the limited UAVs’ hover duration, are analytically derived. The results shed light on the tradeoff between hover time and quality-of-service in UAV-based wireless networks. For performance evaluation, this dissertation provides a comprehensive analysis on the performance of a UAV-based communication system in coexistence with a terrestrial network. In particular, a tractable analytical framework is proposed for analyzing the coverage and rate performance of a network with a UAV base station and deviceto-device (D2D) users. The results reveal the fundamental tradeoffs in such a UAV-D2D network that allow adopting appropriate system design parameters. Then, this dissertation sheds light on the design of three new drone-enabled wireless systems. First, a novel framework for effective use of cache-enabled UAVs in wireless networks is developed. The results demonstrate how the users’ quality of experience substantially improves by exploiting UAVs’ mobility and user-centric information. Second, a new framework is proposed for deploying and operating a drone-based antenna array system that delivers wireless service to ground users within a minimum time. The results show significant enhancement in QoS, spectral and energy efficiency while levering the proposed drone antenna array system. Finally, to effectively incorporate various use cases of drones ranging from aerial users to base stations, the new concept of a fully-fledged 3D cellular network is introduced. For this new type of 3D wireless network, a unified framework for deployment, network planning, and performance optimization is developed that yields a maximum coverage and minimum latency in the network. In a nutshell, the analytical foundations and frameworks presented in this dissertation provide key guidelines for effective design and operation of UAV-based wireless communication systems.

Abstract:
The paradox menaces our statements. The pragmatics of human communication (p) constitutes the empiricist branch of pragmatics. It lays at the origin of some methods for solving human problems where special emphasis is put on interaction and the subject's reflexive processes. This thesis questions the completeness and coherence of the axiomatics of p and its relationship with the therapeutic method. It will be shown that the theory is coherent, that a theory of subjet is unavoidable and that systemic modelling is unnecessary for the method. We shall suggest new axioms and a more elaborate modelling of therapeutic treatment in view of a sustainable change by the theory of revision of belief. Applied to other methods, this procedure could enlighten the comparisons between competing theories

Kim, Kyungnho. "INTEGRATING COORDINATED PATH FOLLOWING ALGORITHMS TO MITIGATE THE LOSS OF COMMUNICATION AMONG MULTIPLE UAVs." Monterey, California. Naval Postgraduate School, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10945/32848.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis addresses the problem of mid-air collision avoidance among multiple Autonomous Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) capable of communicating their flight states across a time-varying communication network. The UAVs capabilities to (a) follow a given path and to (b) exchange and coordinate their relative position while on the path are considered the key factors enabling the time-critical coordination that in turn guarantees the safety of flight. The thesis is based on the key results of the recently developed concept of Coordinated Path Following (CPF) for multiple autonomous agents. While the path-following methodology is adapted without modification, the information exchange over the time-varying communication network and its impact on the performance of coordination was analyzed in a comparative study. The impact of the time-varying information flow is represented by the loss of link ratio, which is the ratio of time without information exchange to the nominal timeframe of communication in a given bidirectional network. The particular coordination metrics utilized are the coordination error (difference between the relative positions of UAVs on the paths) and the Euclidian distance between the UAVs (space separation). On the other hand, the control effort necessary to achieve the desired coordination is represented by the level and variation of the commanded velocity profile. The particular goal of the numerical study was to understand the amount of control effort required to achieve the desired separation of UAVs capable of exchanging a minimum number of parameters over a degrading communication network.

Abstract:
Open Platform Communication Unified Architecture, or OPC UA, is a world-leading communication protocol specializing in unifying and automating production systems communication. In 2018 the OPC Foundation, an industrial consortium, started the OPC UA Field eXchange initiative to develop the current protocol to extend the reach of the communication down to field level devices like sensors and actuators. This paper explores whether OPC UA FX software can be implemented and integrated with HMS Networks’ product AnyBus CompactCom M40.  The problem formulation stems from the future need for factory communication. For factories to compete, they need to adapt and keep up with the technological progression. OPC UA FX is based on decentralized communication where devices transmit data to each other by distributing the load over the entire system.   The purpose of this report is to, based on the Open62541 implementation, develop software that extends OPC UA with PubSub functionality and methods that enable two or more instances to run as an FX application, meaning that the program publishes and subscribes data simultaneously. Once the software is developed, we integrate it on an AnyBus CompactCom 40 module. This will work as a communication prototype that proves that it is possible to extend OPC UA with FX into HMS Networks’ products.  Open62541 is used to gather libraries and methods needed for OPC UA development. The software is developed using C in Visual Studios and integrated into the hardware using Eclipse.  The result in the form of software was a connection-oriented data exchange, based on the OPC UA information model, where two or more instances can publish and subscribe to information simultaneously. HMS Networks can use the result on their way to implementing OPC UA FX in their products.  In conclusion, the Open62541 implementation is beneficial when developing the OPC UA protocol. The software is complete, but it could not be fully integrated into the CompactCom module. The achieved application is still useful for the development of HMS Network’s products that might use the protocol.

Radio Frequency Identification, RFID, is a wireless identification method which uses electromagnetic fields in order to communicate with electronic tags in the vicinity. In recent years, in conjunction with the digitalization of society, RFID has become a popular method for digital identification. RFID, as a method for digital identification, is often used for credit card payments in store, access control to locked rooms and renting books at libraries. As a result of RFID growing rapidly, different frequencies have emerged. In order to benefit from different frequencies, a multi frequency RFID-reader was designed. The purpose of this study was to examine which difficulties arise in the development of a small multi frequency RFID-reader. This study shows that a small multi frequency RFID-reader lacks the conditions that are required to reach the read distance specified in available research. Furthermore, the study shows it is difficult to read different tags simultaneously without the use of a RTOS or a multicore processor.

Abstract:
Social media are increasingly becoming platforms of choice for communication among individuals and groups of the public, and hence organisations are interested in engaging with communities and the public through this form of media to gain intelligence from such engagements to support their decision making processes. Yet, organisations are missing on realising the potential value from using social media for this type of interaction and engagement, while paucity in research addressing practical ways to use social media communication in supporting decision making still persists. This research investigates and proposes a practical framework for using social media – specifically Twitter – as a communications instrument to support the decision making process in police organisations. The research design is based on developing and evaluating a proof of concept representing engagements between the United Arab Emirates (UAE) police as a case study of police organisations with communities and members of the public in the UAE. The proof of concept is designed based on comparing and contrasting current practices by the UAE police with models, trends, and practices discussed in related literature. The research uses the Grounded Theory methodology to guide sampling, data collection, and analysis. The contribution of the research is to both theory and practice. The research addresses a gap in the body of knowledge for a framework that guides the development of models, policies, and practices for the use of social media as a communication instrument to support decision making in governmental organisations, specifically the police. In addition, the framework offers practical insights to policy makers into using different social media to engage with the public in communication, interactions, and knowledge sharing, with the aim of supporting decision making.

This paper presents a Flight Safety System (FSS) for multiple, reliable Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAV’s) capable of flying Over-the-Horizon (OTH) and outside test range airspace. Expanded uses beyond flight safety, such as UAV Air Traffic Control, are considered also. This system satisfies the operational requirement for a Hazard Control Communication Channel as well as providing a reverse communications channel to provide Safety Critical Information to the Range Safety Officer (RSO). Upon examining 60 communications candidates, IRIDIUM accessed through a Data Distribution Network (DDN), with ARINC being a potential service provider, is recommended.

Abstract:
The thesis offers an in-depth analysis on the OPC-UA communication protocol. In particular, we want to study and analyze the possibility of implementing this protocol on automatic machines currently on the market by effectively replacing the entire M2M communication architecture, or in any case by offering the possibility of creating a standard communication system in the Business layer of the hierarchy of the levels of communication. In order to propose OPC-UA as a new communication system, the first part of the following thesis focuses on research and study of the protocol. In fact, thanks to the collection of data sheets, publications and other documentation available from seminars held in the past years by industry experts, who define the characteristics and properties of the standard, it was possible to fully learn the principle of operation. Based on the study of this standard regulated by the IEC 62541 standard, specific tests were carried out on a test bench made with PLC of the main vendors currently on the market to test the potential of OPC-UA, thus giving a technical aspect to the second part of the following elaborate. By considering the limitations imposed by software developers on the implementation of OPC-UA in the development environments of their PLCs, it was therefore possible to write software codes that tested the dynamism, scalability and communication performance between PLCs of different vendors connected together. Finally, the results of the communication tests between the various platforms have been collected in tables and reported at the end of this document with the aim of evaluating and giving a technical response, followed by personal considerations, on the effective implementability of OPC-UA in the industry.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The cultural studies today have to consider the links between the modern technologies of diffusion and reception of art and the ways in which the public perceives and practicises its favourite subjetcs in every day's life. Flow and by which means an "amateur") of music, for instance, constructs his relation to the art in today's society where he can not only diversify the conditions of reception but also legitimate his tastes, sometimes very individual ? The purpose of this thesis is to study the relations between a cultural phenomena - the love of the opera - and the Internet as the way chosen to build and express an aesthetic experience. More than 2000 messages from a selected community on line called operadiscussion have been analysed and compared with the material collected by direct investigations performed in a groupe of opera lovers off line as well as by interviewing different professionals. The observation of the construction and the communication of aestheic experience on the Internet takes place after a first consideration devoted to the representations of the opera audience espacially from the moment when the mass media started their forecasting of the music and changed, in the same time, the condition of the production and the reception

Abstract:
The thesis simulates the problem of network connectivity that occurs due to the dynamic nature of a network during flight. Nine nodes are provided with initial positions and are flown based on the path provided by leader-follower control algorithm using the server-client model. The application layer provides a point to point connection between the server and client and by using socket programming in the transport layer, a server and clients are established. Each node performs a neighbor discovery to discover its neighbors in the data link layer and physical layer performs the CSMA/CA using RTS/CTS. Finally, multi hop routing is achieved in network layer. Each client connects with server at dedicated interval to share each other location and then moves to next location. This process is continued over a period of several iterations until the relative distance is achieved. The constraints and limitations of the technology are network connectivity is lack of flexibility for random location of nodes, links established with a distant node having single neighbor is unstable. Performance of a system decreases with increase in number of nodes.

Abstract:
In the order to set up domotic's and immotic's services, by the CERLOR on the broadcasting network of Metz town's, the idea to offer many great public services, was the start of this smart, graphic terminal study. The realisation of this software, object of this report had first to manage in an optimal way the whole of the materials means of the materials means of terminal and after to make up a reception or execution platform for the application softwares, residents or imports. Built in three layout, this software has at the bottom a multitak-executive, using two scheduler (for the intern and extern process) and running with priority and round-robin principale. It contain a dynamic, compact, adjacent managment unit of memory. The second level has an interpreter's command and a screen managment using graphic symbols (pop up menus, icons). The third layer sofware contain actually the application software in a reduced number
