(cont.) of environmental disturbances and measurement noise. The product of this thesis is a robust planning system that is tolerant of the types of uncertainty experienced by real aircraft. This robustness has been demonstrated by more than 20 successful flights on a fully automated UAV testbed.
This thesis presents the development and testing of a unique testbed consisting of a fleet of eight unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that was designed as a platform for evaluating coordination and control algorithms. A hierarchical configuration of task assignment, trajectory design, and low-level, waypoint following, are used in a receding horizon framework to control the UAV system. Future UAV teams will have to autonomously demonstrate cooperative behaviors in dynamic and uncertain environments, and this testbed can be used to compare various control approaches to accomplish these coordinated missions. Flight demonstrations are made utilizing real-time mixed-integer linear programming techniques, exercising the algorithms in realistic environments with real-world disturbances. Large disturbance sources, computational delay and measurementnoise all represent significant error sources that reduce the ability of UAV teams to interact in a coordinated fashion by increasing uncertainty on higher planning levels. This thesis develops a method that explicitly accounts for this uncertainty by including feedback loops on the task assignment and trajectory design algorithms to prescribe added robustness for the uncertainty at each stage. This approach takes into account low level controller saturation limits that might cause infeasibilities in the plans created at the higher levels of the planning system. Detailed and realistic simulation environments are useful for large-scale multi-vehicle simulations, particularly when logistics prevent flight testing on that scale. This thesis validates one such hardware-in-the-loop simulation environment through the comparison of models obtained from experimentally collected flight data and detailed modeling

The random-walk hypothesis in the U.S. treasury yield curve was not previous studied and is surprising that researchers do not filled that void by testing it. However, the U.S treasury securities market is a benchmark, as the U.S treasury is considered to be risk-free. This benchmark is used to forecast economic development, to analyse securities in other markets, to price other fixed-income securities and to hedge positions taken in other markets. This study applies Chow Denning (1993) multiple variance test, Joint wright multiple version of Wright?s rank and sign tests, Choi (1999) Automatic Variance ratio Test and we also use the well-known Augmented Dickey-Fuller unit roots test to enable us to define the methodology to be used in the study. The database used permits the estimation of relative daily variation on U.S. treasury yield curve from January 1980 to December 2014. We hope that this analysis can provide useful information to traders and investors and will make a contribution in assisting to understand the pattern and behaviour of yields movement.

This work seeks to demonstrate the development process of a multi-rotor UAV. This vehicle is aimed to suppress some gaps that might exist in radiological inspection performed by IPFN (Instituto de Plasmas e Fusão Nuclear), located at IST (Instituto Superior Técnico), in Lisbon. Namely, the use of aircrafts, with superior characteristics compared with the state of the art, for radiological inspection. A research is made in order to optimise the aircraft regarding its components and number of motors to use. Also, a review is done over the benefit of using ducted propellers. Regarding the theoretically advantageous results, the ducts are designed and after an iterative process, are built. Having the ducts ready to be used, static tests were performed to verify the theoretical results, previously calculated. These aimed to verify the benefits of using a duct out of the ground effect, in the ground effect, near corners or walls, and at the closeness to obstacles in a superior level to the rotor. The tests results allow to conclude that, however the duct is not as good as theoretically expected, it is indeed advantageous. The duct usage comprehend more benefits when in the presence of the ground effect. In the remaining experiments, despite not being really advantageous, the ducted fan have a superior performance than the free rotor. Which means, higher thrust and lower power consumption.
