Abstract:
When we encounter type, how do we understand what it means? How is the tone of type influenced by how it is set, when it is made, and where it exists? What part does visual language play? Considering social, spatial, and temporal contexts, this text informs and inspires students, educators, and professionals looking to engage more deeply with the type they use and see. Featuring case studies, diverse typographic practices, and interviews with practicing artists and designers, Giving Type Meaning serves to inform how and why we understand what type says. The book includes: - The importance of cultural and social values and context - Using visual, gestural, and physical space - How time impacts type – looking at both historical context and using time as a medium - A wide range of non-Latin examples from Kanji characters, Thai scripts, and Devanagari scripts to Arabic calligraphy

Abstract:
This book explores blank space in early modern printed books; it addresses physical blank space (from missing words to vacant pages) as well as the concept of the blank. It is a book about typographical marks, readerly response, and editorial treatment. It is a story of the journey from incunabula to Google books, told through the signifiers of blank space: empty brackets, dashes, the et cetera, the asterisk. It is about the semiotics of print and about the social anthropology of reading. The book explores blank space as an extension of Elizabethan rhetoric with readers learning to interpret the mise-en-page as part of a text’s persuasive tactics. It looks at blanks as creators of both anxiety and of opportunity, showing how readers respond to what is not there and how writers come to anticipate that response. Each chapter focuses on one typographical form of what is not there on the page: physical gaps (Chapter 1), the &c (Chapter 2) and the asterisk (Chapter 3). The Epilogue uncovers the rich metaphoric life of these textual phenomena and the ways in which Elizabethan printers experimented with typographical features as they considered how to turn plays into print.

Zabolotney, Bonne, ed. Designing Knowledge. Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9781350319868.

Full text
Abstract:
By positioning designers and their practices at the centre of design studies, Designing Knowledge merges theory and practice to highlight how knowledge creation can contribute to an expanded and more inclusive design practice. Bringing together a rich variety of perspectives, methods and approaches, and exploring and critiquing current issues in design studies, Designing Knowledge encourages designers to reflect on their work in a new light. Design studies practice is a material and tangible focus on knowledge production and mobilization in the field of design. Throughout fifteen chapters featuring a wide range of case studies, design practitioners and theorists address how they produce and mobilize knowledge about design through their practice. Chapters explore how to dismantle the colonial structures of modernist design and depart from the privileged spaces of art historical concepts in design history. They address tensions between traditional Native American design and contemporary design practice, discuss how to authentically integrate personhood into practice and explore topics such as designing wellbeing, developing communities of care, informed accountability and principles of the ecocene. They also analyze languages and typographic representations and investigate the nature of the graphic and typographic translation of literary texts, focusing on the writing of Argentinian writer Jorge Luis Borges as a case study. This book elevates the voices of designers and their work and offers insights to professional designers as well as students on how to use these contributions when working on future projects. By highlighting the awareness of designers throughout their practice, this book will inspire others to reflect on their work and share their own knowledge for the benefit of the field of design.

Brinkema, Eugenie. Life-Destroying Diagrams. Duke University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1215/9781478021650.

Full text
Abstract:
In Life-Destroying Diagrams, Eugenie Brinkema brings the insights of her radical formalism to bear on supremely risky terrain: the ethical extremes of horror and love. Through close readings of works of film, literature, and philosophy, she explores how diagrams, grids, charts, lists, abecedaria, toroids, tempos, patterns, colors, negative space, lengths, increments, and thresholds attest to formal logics of torture and cruelty, violence and finitude, friendship and eros, debt and care. Beginning with a wholesale rethinking of the affect of horror, orienting it away from entrenched models of feeling toward impersonal schemes and structures, Brinkema moves outward to consider the relation between objects and affects, humiliation and metaphysics, genre and the general, bodily destruction and aesthetic generation, geometry and scenography, hatred and value, love and measurement, and, ultimately, the tensions, hazards, and speculative promise of formalism itself. Replete with etymological meditations, performative typography, and lyrical digressions, Life-Destroying Diagrams is at once a model of reading without guarantee and a series of generative experiments in the writing of aesthetic theory.
