Abstract:
Melody is the most ubiquitous form of musical structure, with which listeners come into contact on a daily basis. Mirroring the prevalence and importance of melody, research in music cognition has focused extensively on the processes involved in perceiving and remembering melodic structure. Despite these years of study, however, our understanding of pitch structure in melody can be described simply, with respect to the two components of tonality and pitch contour. Although the importance of these two components has been recognized over the years, it is only recently that workable models of these components have been proposed. This article describes such models of tonality and melodic contour, and discusses the role of these components in listeners' perceptions of and memory for melody.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the Vinaya Piṭaka, which is the first of the three traditional components of Buddhist scripture. Following an introduction that contextualizes this literature and its role in regulating the moral and ethical behaviour of Buddhist monks and nuns, it considers the Vinaya in its three traditional components: Paracanonical, Canonical, and Non-Canonical Vinaya Literature. The Paracanonical Vinaya literature is comprised of two basic components: the Prātimokṣa Sūtra, or those rules governing the individual lives of monks and nuns, and the Karmavācanā, which governs the basic life of the Buddhist saṃgha. As these two texts were expanded into fully canonical versions, noted as Buddhavacana, they developed into texts known as the Sūtravibhaṅga and Skandhaka, which included stories explaining the promulgation of the Vinaya rules, their applications, and exceptions. Finally, we consider the Non-Canonical Vinaya Literature, which includes commentaries and miscellaneous texts providing additional information about the Buddhist disciplinary tradition.

Abstract:
Immunological health relies on a balance between immune responsiveness to foreign pathogens and tolerance to self-components, commensals, food-derived components, and semi-allogeneic fetal antigens. Disruptions of this balance are hallmarks of immunodeficiency diseases, autoimmune diseases, and pregnancy failure. Patients with chronic kidney disease are immunologically unique in demonstrating features of both chronic inflammation and acquired immunodeficiency—predisposing these individuals to the two commonest causes of death, namely cardiovascular disease and sepsis. Defects and abnormalities in almost all components of the immune system can be observed, although it is difficult to say whether the observations denote mechanism or effect. This chapter reviews, briefly, measurable immune system abnormalities in chronic kidney disease and some of the potential underlying mechanisms.

Dowker, Ann. Individual Differences in Arithmetical Abilities. Edited by Roi Cohen Kadosh and Ann Dowker. Oxford University Press, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199642342.013.034.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter discusses individual differences in arithmetic. It deals relatively briefly with the findings about the general large extent of such differences in both children and adults. It then discusses findings that indicate that it is inadequate to speak of arithmetical ability as a single characteristic. Rather, it is made up of many components, which may correlate, but also show significant functional independence. Discrepancies between any two such components, in both directions, can be frequently observed. There is evidence for this from many sources, including studies of patients with acquired dyscalculia, brain imaging studies, cross-cultural studies, and studies of both typically developing children and those with mathematical difficulties. The chapter then discusses questions about when such between- and within-individual differences begin, and whether numerical ability is componential from infancy or starts as a single ability and then differentiates. There is certainly evidence that it is already componential in preschoolers. The need for more longitudinal and intervention studies is emphasized, if we are to understand whether differences in specific components are consistent over time, and whether specific components at an early age have specific predictive relationships to specific components found later on.

Abstract:
Nephrolithiasis is the presence of kidney stones, which are also known as ‘renal calculi’. Renal calculi arise when urine becomes supersaturated with insoluble components. This may occur when there is excessive production of these components, a decrease in factors maintaining their solubility (e.g. citrate), or a reduction in urine volume (leading to increased concentration). Infection may play a significant role in the initiation of renal calculus formation, by creating a nidus for further crystal growth. Renal calculi are usually classified into two categories: those containing calcium (80%), and non-calcareous calculi (20%).

Abstract:
This article gives information about the role of computational technology in assisting nautical archaeologists. Advances in computing, recording, and instrumentation technology have impacted both, the way the fieldwork is carried out, and how the gathered data is stored, processed, and presented. Ship reconstruction can be based on inferences from partially recovered archaeological evidence and other written sources. This article describes the approach of “textual excavation”. There are two means of representing and describing ships—textual and visual. Textual representations include treatises that offer information about ship design, construction techniques, and the evolution of shipbuilding. The components of a vessel can be depicted graphically in form of treatises, drawings, and photographs of timbers and ship fragments. Visual representations can augment the understanding of a vessel and its components. Digital collections facilitate dissemination of archaeological data.

Full text
Abstract:
Addressing unique effects of both addiction and analgesia on older adults, this chapter defines the geriatric population and proceeds to discuss the recognition of addiction or substance misuse in it. There is little argument that the elderly have special diagnostic concerns and management needs that are imposed upon those of younger adults. The concept of the pain signature is introduced as a measure of the functions with which the individual’s pain interferes. Four instruments serving as diagnostic aids are included in tabular format: the pain signature elements; a list of recommended patient history queries; suggested components of the review of systems; and special components of the physical examination. The tables are geared specifically toward geriatric patients. The two central themes of the chapter are treatment of pain, and the treatment of opioid misuse and addiction.

Wittman, David M. Spacetime Geometry. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199658633.003.0011.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter shows that the counterintuitive aspects of special relativity are due to the geometry of spacetime. We begin by showing, in the familiar context of plane geometry, how a metric equation separates frame‐dependent quantities from invariant ones. The components of a displacement vector depend on the coordinate system you choose, but its magnitude (the distance between two points, which is more physically meaningful) is invariant. Similarly, space and time components of a spacetime displacement are frame‐dependent, but the magnitude (proper time) is invariant and more physically meaningful. In plane geometry displacements in both x and y contribute positively to the distance, but in spacetime geometry the spatial displacement contributes negatively to the proper time. This is the source of counterintuitive aspects of special relativity. We develop spacetime intuition by practicing with a graphic stretching‐triangle representation of spacetime displacement vectors.

Full text
Abstract:
Following the discovery of the ABO blood groups by Landsteiner in 1901, Albert Hustin described the first transfusion of a whole blood unit in 1914. The modern transfusion era really begins in 1916 with the discovery of sodium citrate as an anticoagulant by the same physician, allowing blood conservation in dedicated packs. Since that time, many advances have been made especially over the past two decades in the storage, the conservation, and the laboratory testing of blood components and in transfusion medicine practice. Transfusion of whole blood has been replaced by blood component therapy, which consists of the administration of packed red blood cells, fresh frozen plasma, or platelets. Although blood transfusion is safer than ever, the risk of complications will never reach zero. The risk of infectious transfusion-transmitted diseases has been markedly reduced by the implementation of extensive infectious disease testing, donor selection, and pathogen-inactivation procedures. In countries with a high human development index, the leading causes of allogeneic blood transfusion-related deaths actually resulted from immunological and septic complications. The first section of this chapter describes the structure, function, and immunological aspects of the different blood components that are routinely transfused today. The second section details the composition of the different blood components, their indications, the pre-transfusion compatibility tests, and the main adverse effects associated with their transfusion.

Full text
Abstract:
While ethics and palliative care have always been core components of the practice of medicine, each was only recently recognized as a distinct field. Both emerged from the twentieth-century shift of emphasis from paternalism (more inclusively termed parentalism) to patient autonomy, as well as the technological explosion that prompted many novel questions. With evolving recognition that patient wishes were not always honored—and patient suffering insufficiently addressed—the two fields attempted to empower patients and ameliorate suffering. Given the overlap between the two fields, there may be areas of conflict which—when viewed in a more positive light—may actually be opportunities for collaboration.

Abstract:
In this chapter, two tenth-century CE Coptic alchemical papyri will be scrutinized palaeographically and analysed in their capacity as artefacts. The analysis aims at understanding the ways and means through which two alchemical texts were embodied in manuscripts by one individual scribe, presumably an alchemical practitioner himself, and it reveals a striking multitude of different scripts and codes applied by him. Attempts will be made to account for the regularities by which his choice of each of those codes was triggered. Comparing single components of this scribe’s repertoire with diachronic and synchronic parallels, an overall picture of his intellectual setting and educational background will be outlined.

Abstract:
In the 1980s Carter began to produce two distinct streams of music: large-scale works extending the techniques of the previous decade, and miniatures that forecast the style of his later compositions, big and small. Expanding on the two voice substructure of Night Fantasies, the large scale works of this decade systematically explore contrapuntal designs with three, four, or five components. While the early short works present similar designs in miniature, later ones take on a more informal, improvisatory character. With a change from an American to a British publisher, most commissions now came from the UK or Europe, and in 1988 Carter sold his papers to the Paul Sacher Stiftung in Basel.

Full text
Abstract:
The present article poses some fundamental questions related to bilingualism and to the acquisition of two phonological components, by very young children. It discusses different types of bilingualism and their outcomes. After a brief consideration of alleged pros and cons of bilingualism brought up in the past decades, two perspectives of bilingualism are sketched—psycholinguistic and sociolinguistic—and certain aspects of bilingual child phonology are presented from each of these points of view. The essential issue is whether different outcomes of bilingual child phonology are predictable, and to find the crucial criteria to support the predictions. Finally, the discussion addresses some basic questions about bilingual acquisition, and ends with a summary of various types of cross-linguistic interaction.

Full text
Abstract:
This article considers two functional data analysis settings where sparsity becomes important: the first involves only measurements at a relatively sparse set of points and the second relates to variable selection in a functional case. It begins with a discussion of two data sets that fall into the ‘sparsely observed’ category, the ‘growth’ data and the ‘nephropathy’ data, both of which are used to illustrate alternative approaches for analysing sparse functional data. It then examines different classes of methods that can be applied to functional data, such as basis functions, mixed-effects models and local smoothing techniques, as well as specific methodologies for dealing with sparse functional data in the principal components, clustering, classification, and regression settings. Finally, it describes two approaches for performing regressions involving a functional predictor and a scalar response: SASDA (sequential algorithm for selecting design automatically) and FLiRTI (Functional Linear Regression That’s Interpretable).

Abstract:
This chapter introduces a novel approach to understanding populism in both a theoretically sophisticated and cross-regionally pertinent way. Focusing on ways of being and doing politics, and from there on appeals, populism is defined as the antagonistic, mobilizational “flaunting of ‘the low’.” The “low,” or cruder, personalistic, culturally “nativist,” and overall “less sublimated” way of being and doing politics, has thus three inter-related components, mirrored by those of its opposite, on the “high.” The high-low axis is fully orthogonal to the widespread and well-known left-right axis; together, they give rise to a two-dimensional political space. Furthermore, taking the two dimensions composing left and right and the two dimensions composing high and low, a novel “wheel” of axes of political polarization is introduced, useful for comparative analysis of regionally diverse populist/anti-populist divides, with different left-right polarities.
