Abstract:
The fact that digital TV and set-top boxes are connected to Internet opens up for many possibilities. One concept that has emerged because of this is social TV, which has to do with social functionality in combination with watching any type of content: on TV or on the web. In this report an interface for digital TV is presented with social features. The challenge with developing this is that the viewer is in a lean-back mode when watching TV and not up for complicated interaction tasks. Because of this, the aim of the design was to have relevant social features, that will fit in a TV context. This meant that they would support social activities that are already being made when watching TV and movies and also demand a very simple interaction. A concept was developed through literature studies and the design process. The result is a interface with a simple navigation that constitutes of five widgets, all that supports different kinds of watching behavior and social activities. The interface has been implemented to an interactive prototype that conveys the look and feel of the concept.

Nas últimas duas décadas, observamos a transição da TV analógica para a TV digital nas várias partes do mundo, com o estabelecimento de sistemas internacionais de TV digital, como o ATSC, DVB e ISDB. No final de 2007, o sistema brasileiro de TV digital (SBTVD) foi lançado em caráter comercial na cidade de São Paulo. O SBTVD traz significativas inovações, dentre as quais destacamos interatividade, que é oferecida através de vários mecanismos de transmissão de dados junto ao conteúdo audiovisual. Esta dissertação tem por objetivo investigar e avaliar os mecanismos existentes para a implantação da interatividade na TV digital brasileira. Para atingir este objetivo, é proposta uma plataforma modular para testes com interatividade na TV digital brasileira. Os módulos que constituem esta plataforma foram propostos tendo por base as três etapas do circuito percorrido por uma aplicação interativa ao longo de um sistema de TV digital, a saber: geração de um transport stream contendo um aplicativo interativo, tratamento do aplicativo no receptor e retorno do resultado da interação pelo canal de interatividade para a emissora. Ensaios experimentais são realizados sobre o primeiro módulo desta plataforma, considerando os sinais das emissoras de TV disponíveis em Janeiro de 2008 na cidade de São Paulo. Esta dissertação apresenta duas contribuições importantes: os resultados destes ensaios experimentais e a proposta inicial de uma plataforma para realizar testes e avaliações que permitam um melhor entendimento e uso dos recursos de interatividade oferecidos pelo sistema brasileiro de TV digital.
We have watched the transition from analog TV to digital TV around the world in the last two decades, with the establishment of international systems, as ATSC, DVB and ISDB. At the end of 2007, the Brazilian Digital Television System (SBTVD) was released for commercial purposes in São Paulo City. SBTVD brings significant innovations, from which we emphasize interactivity, that is offered by some data transmission mechanisms. This work aims to investigate the current mechanisms for implementing the interactivity in the Brazilian Digital TV. In order to reach this aim, it\'s proposed a modular platform for tests with interactivity in the Brazilian digital TV. The three modules of that platform are based on the three stages of the interactive TV System: transport stream generation containing an interactive application, treatment of the application in the receiver, and returning of user\'s interaction through the interactivity channel. Experiments are released on the first module, considering the digital TV signals available in São Paulo in January, 2008. This work has two main conclusions: the result of these experiments and the initial propose of a platform for tests execution and evaluation which allow us to have a better understanding and a more efficient use of the interactive resources offered by SBTVD.

De senaste åren har utbudet av TV-kanaler ökat och det är idag vanligt att man har tillgång till så pass många kanaler att det är svårt att överblicka dem på ett enkelt sätt. Det finns olika tekniker för att sortera fram önskvärd information till användaren, men ingen design är anpassad varken för att hantera den nya förbättrade upplösningen eller de nya intelligenta funktionerna. Detta arbete har formulerats för att få fram ett exempel på hur den förbättrade upplösningen kan utnyttjas i programguiden samt för att få ett gränssnitt mot de intelligenta funktionerna. Egenskaper för programguiden togs fram som stöd för de inledanden pappersskisserna, varefter en välgrundad och detaljerad datordesign gjordes. En implementation i skalbar vektorgrafik (SVG) gjordes i den slutgiltiga prototypen för att demonstrera animationer och användbarhet. Avslutningsvis diskuteras lärdomarna som kan tas från detta arbete.

 


The number of available TV channels has increased the last couple of years and it is hard to get a good overview in a simple way. There are different techniques for sorting the information so that the user gets the required information, but no design is adapted neither to handle the new improved resolution nor the new intelligent functions. This thesis has been developed to get an example on how the new improved resolution can be used in the program guide and to get an interface with the intelligent functions. Desirable qualities for the program guide were stated for the sketching phase of the design, and the sketches were subsequently used as outlines for the computer-based design of the program guide. An implementation in scalable vector graphics (SVG) was made in a final prototype to demonstrate animations and usability. Finally there is a discussion about the contributions from this thesis.

A TV digital é hoje uma realidade em muitos países e no Brasil as pesquisas já estão atingindo um estágio avançando. Muita expectativa gira em torno desta tecnologia, que oferece uma ampla variedade de serviços multimídia, abrindo as portas deste modo para criativas propostas e novas possibilidades de relacionamento com o usuário final. Esta complexidade e as novas opções de serviços que podem ser oferecidos demandam, obrigatoriamente, uma arquitetura adequada de gerenciamento, capaz de controlar e otimizar os terminais desta rede bem como os serviços oferecidos pela mesma. Neste trabalho são apresentados os requisitos funcionais e não funcionais necessários para a construção de um sistema genérico de gerenciamento de set-top boxes e serviços em TV digital, baseados no estudo de pesquisas semelhantes e nas particularidades deste ambiente. Também para este sistema genérico são detalhados todos os casos de uso de interesse. Além disso, uma arquitetura híbrida é proposta para a solução deste problema, utilizando para tanto padrões abertos e considerando alguns cenários possíveis de implantação no mundo real. Nesta arquitetura, é adotado o modelo clássico de gerenciamento gerente-agente, através do uso de um servidor de gerência, responsável pelo armazenamento e análise de todos os dados de gerenciamento bem como pelo disparo de comandos e recebimento de respostas (síncronas e/ou assíncronas) dos agentes. Tanto na definição deste sistema genérico como no desenho da arquitetura final, procurou-se na medida do possível adotar a utilização de princípios clássicos de gerenciamento que já são aplicados em várias arquiteturas existentes, inclusive de mercado. Deste modo, foi possível encontrar uma solução para um problema complexo através do uso de conceitos amplamente conhecidos, o que facilita o entendimento final.
Nowadays, digital TV systems are a reality in many countries and in Brazil the research in this field is reaching an advanced stage. Much excitement is expected from this technology, which may offer a wide variety of multimedia services, opening the doors for creative proposals and new possibilities of relationships with the final user. This complexity and the new options of services that can be offered demand a suitable architecture for management, which should be able to control and optimize the set-top boxes of this network as well as of the services offered by it. In this work, the requirements for the building of a generic management system for the digital TV environment are presented, based in the study of similar research and considering the specifics involved. Besides that, a hybrid architecture based on open standards is proposed for the solution of this problem. In this architecture, it is adopted the classical manager-agent model, through the use of a management server, which is responsible for the storage and analysis of all the management data as well for the triggering of commands and receptions of answers and traps sent by the agents. The conception and design of this architecture has followed as much as possible, classic principles of network management. With this approach, it was possible to find a simple solution to a very complex problem.

Abstract:
This thesis is about the convergent production and use of educational resources, particularly content for television and the internet. This is the result of an enquiry framed by Cultural Studies and New Media Studies, on how educational television and websites are converging in an era in which the boundaries between different media are disappearing. The vision leading this project assumes that convergence should be about transforming the televisual text across media, promoting meaningful connections (intertextualities) among different modalities, and not merely relocating and adapting a single content to different technological devices. The case that better reflects this understanding of educational TV-Internet convergence is BBG Schools in the United Kingdom, which includes television series and corresponding websites. The project is structured following three main lines of enquiry: a) Content generation (institutional sphere), b) Content itself (intertextual dimension) and c) Content users (teachers and children in the classroom), these three addressed through a multimethodological strategy. The methodological approach for the content generation line was based on interviews with BBC key actors and documentary sources. The text analysis was approached through an instrument developed following Literary theory, around . the concept of intertextuality. The uses and users line was explored through media sessions in British schools, with six different age groups using observation, participant observation, interviews, questionnaires and learning activities. Some concepts and issues explored through this investigation are: media regulations, organisational culture in media industries, production models, types of transplatform intertextualities and the cultures of media use in the classroom (roles, practices, settings, assumptions and perceptions). The findings of the three phases co-flow in a proposal for educational media to be implemented in Mexico and/or in similar contexts.

When developing HTML5 applications for TV platforms, the TV platforms provide, in addition to standardHTML5 functionality, also extra APIs for TV-specific features. These extra APIs differ between TVplatforms, and that is a problem when developing an application targeting several platforms. This thesis hasexamined if it is possible to design a framework which provides the developer with one API that works formany platforms by wrapping their platform-specific code. The answer is yes. With success, platform-specificfeatures including: TV remote control input, video, volume, Internet connection status, TV channel streamsand EPG data have been harmonised under an API in a JavaScript library. Furthermore, a build systempackages the code in the way the platforms expect. The framework eases the development of TV platformHTML5 applications. At the moment, the framework supports the Pace, PC and Samsung Smart TVplatforms, but it can be extended with more TV platform back-ends.
Lorsque l’on développe des applications HTML5 pour des plateformes TV, les plateformes TV fournissent,en plus de la fonctionnalité standard d'HTML5, des APIs supplémentaires pour les particularités d'une TV.Ces APIs supplémentaires diffèrent entre les plateformes TV, et ceci cause un problème lors dudéveloppement d’une application pour plusieurs plateformes. Cette thèse a fait l’examen de la possibilité deconcevoir un cadre d'applications qui fournit au concepteur une API qui peut servir à plusieurs plateformes,cachant le code spécifique de celles-ci. La réponse est oui. On a réussi à harmoniser : l’entrée de latélécommande, le lecteur vidéos, le volume, la connexion Internet, le flux TV et leurs données GPE, dans uneAPI qui réside dans une bibliothèque JavaScript. En outre, un système de compilation met le code d’unemanière dont la plateforme peut comprendre. Le cadre d'applications facilite le développement d'applicationsHTML5 des plateformes TV. Pour le moment, le cadre d'applications peut supporter la Pace, le PC et laplateforme de Samsung Smart TV, mais il peut également fonctionner avec d'autres plateformes TV.
Wenn man HTML5-Anwendungen für TV-Plattformen entwickelt, stellen die Plattformen neben denStandardfunktionalitäten von HTML5 auch extra APIs für TV spezifische Features zur verfügung. Diesezuzätzlichen APIs unterscheiden zwischen TV-Plattformen und das ist ein Problem bei der Entwicklung vonAnwendungen, die auf mehreren Plattformen laufen sollen. Diese These untersucht, ob es möglich ist, einFramework zu entwerfen, dass dem Entwickler eine API bereitstellt, welche für mehrere Plattformenfunktioniert, indem deren Plattform spezifischer Code verpackt wird. Quando si sviluppano delle applicazioni HTML5 per le piattaforme TV, quest'ustime offrono, oltre allafunzionalità comune di HTML5, anche APIs addizionali per funzionalità specifiche della TV. Queste APIsaddizionali differiscono tra le varie piattaforme TV e questo è un problema quando si sviluppaun'applicazione che funzioni per ciascuna piattaforma. Il presente lavoro esamina la possibilità di progettareun framework che fornisca allo sviluppatore una sola API, la quale sia funzionante per molte piattaforme esia idonea a nascondere il codice specifico di ciascuna di esse. La risposta è sì. Il framework fonde:l'immissione del telecomando, il video, il volume, lo stato della connessione Internet, i flussi dei canali TV edei dati della guida elettronica dei programmi, all'interno di una API secondo il modello di una libreriaJavaScript. Inoltre, il sistema di compilazione crea un pacchetto del codice nel modo in cui le piattaforme siaspettano. Il framework facilita lo sviluppo di applicazioni HTML5 per le piattaforme TV. Al momento, ilframework sostiene le seguenti piatteforme: Pace, PC e Samsung Smart TV, ma può essere esteso anche adaltre.
När man utvecklar HTML5-applikationer för TV-plattformar, finns utöver HTML5s standardfunktionalitet,även extra APIer för att komma åt TV-specifika funktioner. Dessa extra APIer skiljer sig åt mellan TV-plattformar, och det är ett problem när man utvecklar en applikation för många plattformar. Dettaexamensarbete har undersökt om det är möjligt att designa ett ramverk som förser utvecklaren med ett APIsom fungerar för många plattformar genom att wrappa deras plattformsspecifika kod. Svaret är ja. Ramverketharmoniserar: fjärrkontrollsindata, video, volym, internetförbindelse, TV-kanalströmmar och deras TV-tablåer, till ett gemensamt JavaScript-bibliotek-API. Vidare paketerar ett byggsystem koden på de sätt somplattformarna förväntar sig. Ramverket underlättar utveckling av HTML5-applikationer för TV-plattformar.För tillfället stöder ramverket plattformarna: Pace, PC och Samsung Smart TV, men det kan breddas med flerTV-plattformar.

Nella stesura del lavoro si è evidenziato come nei mercati globali odierni, caratterizzati da elevata tensione competitiva e da cicli di vita di prodotto sempre più rapidi, le imprese imitano e lo fanno con ritorni ottimali. Si è svolta l’analisi per individuare quale sia il ruolo dell’imitazione per lo sviluppo globale di un prodotto nel settore dell’elettronica di consumo: il televisore con tecnologia a cristalli liquidi. Il mercato in oggetto ha visto imprese di successo conquistare la leadership di mercato con la corretta gestione della leva imitativa. La tesi è composta da tre capitoli, nel primo si è analizzata la letteratura sull’innovazione, nel secondo si è concettualizzata l’imitazione in un’ottica gestionale e nel terzo si è data conferma della tesi esposta studiando e presentando casi dal settore delle TV LCD.

The market for digital TV is developing and some industry actors focus on interactive TV. Interactive content and services that previously only were able to use through a standard PC are now available to use through the TV set. To distribute the services to the TV a so called set top box with broadband connection needs to be used. Such a box can be described as a unit where a standard PC and a digital TV receptor are integrated.

This thesis aims to investigate the market for electronic payment solutions with a focus on payment for interactive content and services in digital TV. The presumptive services are many which lead to a relative complex analysis of how they should be paid for. What kind of service is it really to be paid for?

In order to conduct an appropriate analysis this thesis contains an identification of five different service-/content types. The grouping we have conducted is in so called On Demand services, Voice over IP, Shopping, Interactive TV and web services. In order to be able to conduct a relevant assessment of how the distributed services should be paid for the understanding of the market situation is utterly important. Therefore the thesis contains a pre study of the different market actors that can be related to a set top box and interactive TV.

The study of eight different actors on the Swedish market provides an overview of content providers’ as well as payment companies’ view on how interactive content and services should be paid for. The result from the thesis is a recommendation on how an electronic payment solution should be designed and important aspects to think of. One of the key outcomes is that different services needs different types of payment solutions which implies that you should first decide on what type of services that are to be provided before a decision is made on the payment solution.

A byproduct from the thesis is the analysis model that facilitates analysis of services as well as payment solutions and - methods related to electronic payments and interactive media.

A pesquisa relatada nas páginas desta dissertação de mestrado problematiza o jogo televisivo (programas de jogo e jogos fora dos programas) no Sistema Brasileiro de Televisão (SBT) como enunciação da mídia TV. A dissertação, inserida na linha de pesquisa Mídias e Processos Audiovisuais, do Programa de Pós-graduação em Comunicação da UNISINOS, partiu da intuição de uma TV jogo na emissora, em relação à qual o projeto colocava os seguintes problemas de pesquisa: 1) Identificar os sentidos dados pela emissora ao jogo em mundos televisivos construídos a partir do jogo; 2) Estabelecer relações entre o jogo nos imaginários da emissora e em outros imaginários (na cultura brasileira, nas ciências humanas, nas ciências exatas); 3) Analisar o lúdico no SBT na perspectiva do jogo, perspectiva que é ao mesmo tempo contrariada, enunciativamente, por parte da emissora, justamente pelo abundante comparecimento de jogos nos seus panoramas televisivos. Esta dissertação constrói o conceito de sem-rosto. Trata-se de uma cartografia realizada na TV aberta brasileira, particularmente, no SBT e na Rede Globo, com o objetivo de encontrar imagens nas quais o rosto é escondido com algum recurso audiovisual. Longe de pensarmos que se trata da ausência de rosto, pensamos o sem-rosto como uma atualização (DELEUZE, 2004) do rosto nos mundos televisivos, construído de forma tecnocultural, em uma cultura para a qual o rosto é uma questão central de identidade. A pergunta que acompanhou toda a pesquisa foi, então, quais os sentidos identitários que o sem-rosto adquire no interior dos mundos televisivos e o que ele diz sobre a televisão e sobre a tecnocultura contemporânea? Para responder a pergunta e decodificar o sem-rosto nos mundos televisivos, adotamos a Metodologia das Molduras (KILPP, 2010) e os seus procedimentos de intuição, flaneuria, cartografia, desconstrução e dissecação e os seus eixos de molduras, ethicidades e imaginários. Para pensar a televisão e as suas imagens e montagens, nos auxiliamos dos autores Flusser (2011), Eisenstein (2002b), Aumont et al. (1995), Aumont e Marie (2003), Canevacci (2009) e Kilpp (2003, 2010). Para pensar o rosto, foi importante o auxílio de Deleuze (1984), Deleuze e Guattari (1996), Canevacci (2009) e Gomes (2016). Para a análise, escolhemos alguns tempos televisivos que tem a presença de sem-rosto no SBT e na Rede Globo como corpus pela diversidade de sentidos dados entre essas emissoras e entre os sem-rosto abordados. Entre as conclusões, percebemos que o sem-rosto, ao mesmo tempo em que se esconde o rosto, aponta para o rosto ocultado. Esta dinâmica audiovisual resulta em uma imagem-afecção (DELEUZE, 1984), uma qualidade de todo o programa e de toda a TV, uma audiovisualidade. É possível chegar a essa audiovisualidade pela desconstrução de um conjunto de rostos que estão moldurando aquele sem-rosto, entre outros, o rosto da emissora e o do programa, junto com os imaginários convocados nessas relações todas.

Se trata de una cartografía realizada en la TV abierta brasileña, particularmente, en el SBT y en la Rede Globo, con el objetivo de encontrar imágenes en las que el rostro es escondido con algún recurso audiovisual. Lejos de pensar que se trata de la ausencia de rostro, pensamos el sin-rostro como una actualización (DELEUZE, 2004) del rostro en los mundos televisivos, construido de forma tecnocultural, en una cultura para la cual el rostro es una cuestión central de identidad. La pregunta que acompañó toda la investigación fue, entonces, ¿cuáles son los sentidos identitarios que el sin-rostro adquiere en el interior de los mundos televisivos y lo que él dice sobre la televisión y sobre la tecnocultura contemporánea? Para responder a la pregunta y decodificar el sin-rostro en los mundos televisivos, adoptamos la Metodología de las Molduras (KILPP, 2010) y sus procedimientos de intuición, flaneuria, cartografía, desconstrucción y disección y sus ejes de molduras, ethicidades e imaginarios. Para pensar la televisión y sus imágenes y montajes, nos auxiliamos de los autores Flusser (2011), Eisenstein (2002b), Aumont et al. (1995), Aumont y Marie (2003), Canevacci (2009) y Kilpp (2003, 2010). Para pensar el rostro, fue importante el auxilio de Deleuze (1984), Deleuze y Guattari (1996), Canevacci (2009) y Gomes (2016). Para el análisis, elegimos algunos tiempos televisivos que tienen la presencia de sin-rostro en el SBT y en la Rede Globo como corpus por la diversidad de sentidos dados entre esas emisoras y entre los sin-rostro abordados. Entre las conclusiones, percibimos que el sin-rostro, al mismo tiempo en que se esconde el rostro, apunta hacia el rostro oculto. Esta dinámica audiovisual resulta en una imagen-afección (DELEUZE, 1984), una cualidad de todo el programa y de toda la TV, una audiovisualidad. Es posible llegar a esa audiovisualidad por la desconstrucción de un conjunto de rostros que están moldeando aquel sin-rostro, entre otros, el rostro de la emisora y el del programa, junto con los imaginarios convocados en todas esas relaciones.

Since a few years back television has been on a verge of an enormous digital change. Web-TV is now growing at an incredible rate and is said to completely change the way we consume TV. The purpose of this essay is to determine and gain an understanding of how representatives of the broadcast industry looks at the phenomenon of web-TV and especially the different kinds of online video services and how they believe this will affect the television. Methods used are qualitative interviews which we compared with previous studies on the subject and acknowledged communication theories. The respondents were people with good insight and understanding of the media and TV industry. Some of the conclusions made are that the representatives believe television needs to be redefined and that there has been a shift in power in favor for the viewers. We have also seen that the representatives believe TV consumption now is more flexible where it’s no longer bound to a specific time and place.

The linear televison have dominated the supply of moving pictures, but this is about to change with the possibility to consume it via the Internet.I n this thesis we have studied how the two Swedish tv-network companies, SVT and TV4 are working with their web TV and if their online services have affected the linear TV. To limit the size of the study we chose two network companies that provide the most popular tv channels and web services in Sweden. To gather data from these two companies we conducted qualitative interviews with people at the networks. We came to the conclusion that SVT and TV4 doesn't find that their web TV services (called SVT Play and TV4 Play) are competing with the linear TV. They rather regard them as assets to broaden their services. We also found that even though web TV is growing in popularity, the majority of the consumtion of movable pictures still comes from the linear TV. Therefore web TV hasn't affected the linear TV significally yet, but we think that the TV as a medium will be consumed different in the future.

The aim of the study is to identify possible differences regarding how men and women pay attention to product placement. The overall issue underlying the study is as follows: ● How does the attention of product placement differ between men and women? In this study, the authors have chosen to use a multimethod research, which combines qualitative and quantitative methods. In order to fulfil the purpose and answer the main question, quantitative data was initially collected in the form of questionnaires. The data from the surveys were compiled and then mapped to provide a basis for the qualitative focus groups held with ten people, five women and five men. The choice of methodology fell naturally since the aim of the study was to identify possible differences regarding how men and women pay attention to product placements. The result shows that there are similarities as well as differences between the sexes within product placements dimensions, attitude, memory and brand recognition.

The media is not only a source of entertainment, it is also a way to better understand ourselves and a means to shape our identities. The purpose of different types of communication are never neutral, there is always a discourse and an underlying meaning at work. By continually portraying women as stereotypical characters, the patriarchal discourse is reproduced and perpetuates an unequal view of women in society. It is possible to reconstruct the hegemonic male domination and representation is key if there is a change to be had in this area. Thus, it is of utter importance to create productions that showcase a vast variety of social and gender roles. The purpose of this essay is to analyse female representation in visual media with a primary focus on women’s history, exemplified by how gender is created by female characters in the miniseries Fröken Frimans krig. The analysis has a basis in multimodal critical discourse analysis as well as critical narrative analysis, and also takes into consideration Mulvey’s theories on the male gaze. The theoretical framework is based on poststructural feminist theory with an aim to deconstruct notions of what constitutes a woman and a man.

Beyond the general discussion, it was elaborated focusing and recounting a very particular phenomenon occurred in Assis, a small town in São Paulo state, denominated One Day Without TV This campaign, created primarily in repudiation of the television programming received by the screen television of the town between the years 1970 and 1980, was coordinated by the local Catholic Church and supported by many sectors of the society in a period when the watch TV would be encouraged and further popularized in the name of technological advancement, national unity around the same language and also in the name of freedom of choice that accompanied the democratization policy in the country . The campaign won popular support. Under the justification of an educational activity, the Diocese had, for six consecutive years, their views about novels, serials, movies, advertisements and other programming offered by Brazilian television partners who had signal reception in the city. During this management, according to their doctrines and practices, the Church intended to change the way the citizens received the messages of those programs

O surgimento das modernas tecnologias de comunicação e informação multimídia vem impactando e transformando a vida da sociedade atual, alterando hábitos e costumes de seus usuários. A visualização destes efeitos não tem sido diferente no universo da TV Digital. A sua inovadora proposta de interatividade entre usuário e emissora, promete revolucionar hábitos e costumes dos telespectadores. A implementação do Canal de Interatividade da TV Digital através da Internet é uma proposta particular do sistema brasileiro de TV Digital e pretende melhorar a qualidade de vida da população provendo interatividade no sistema, além de conduzir à melhoria da qualidade da programação oferecida aos seus telespectadores. Outro tipo de tecnologia de comunicação que atualmente vem ganhando cada vez mais espaço no cotidiano é a tecnologia de comunicação sem fio, especialmente aquelas que oferecem altas taxas de transferência de dados e aquelas que oferecem grande mobilidade, tornando as comunicações cada vez mais personalizadas e pessoais. Como grande inovação, este trabalho propõe a implementação do Canal de Interatividade da TV Digital através da Internet, utilizando redes de comunicação sem fio, com mais de uma tecnologia de comunicação sem fio presente no mesmo Terminal de Acesso à TV digital, tirando proveito da inovativa metodologia de reconfiguração de Rádio Definido por Programa de Computador. Desta forma, permiti-se que, quando uma determinada rede de comunicação sem fio estiver indisponível em dado momento e/ou região, o sistema se reorganize e utilize outra rede de comunicação sem fio que esteja à disposição.
The sprouting of the modern communication technologies and multimedia information comes impacting and transforming the life of the current society, modifying habits and customs of its users. The visualization of these effects has not been different in the universe of the Digital TV. Its innovative proposal of interactivity between the user and the broadcaster, promises to revolutionize habits and customs of the viewers. The implementation of the Interactivity Channel of the Digital TV through the Internet is a particular proposal of the Brazilian DTV system and intends to improve the quality of life of the population providing interactivity of the system, beyond leading to the improvement of the quality of the offered programming to its viewers. Another type of communication technology that currently comes ga ining each time more space in the daily life is the wireless technology, especially those which offer high data rates and those which offer great mobility, becoming each time more personalized and personal. As great innovation, this dissertation considers the implementation of the Interactivity Channel of the Digital TV through the Internet, using wireless communication, with more than one wireless technology in the same Set-Top-Box, taking off advantage of the innovative Software Defined Radio reconfiguration methodology. In such a way, it is allowed when one determined wireless network will be unavailable at any given time and/or region, the system if reorganizes itself and uses another available wireless network.

Esta dissertação de mestrado apresenta um método para simular cenas de mar para TV/Cinema com um grande número de agentes de vários tipos (embarcações, portos, pessoas, ...) para produções com elevado grau de realismo de imagem e comportamento dos agentes. Este método usa modelagem em lógica nebulosa (fuzzy) e programação no sistema MASSIVE de maneira a integrar os resultados com sistemas de rendering e composição de imagens de alta resolução. Um objetivo importante desta dissertação é criar um sistema que facilita o trabalho de modeladores e designers envolvidos no pipeline de produção.
This MSc dissertation presents a method to simulate sea scenes for TV / Film with a large number of agents of various types (vessels, ports, people ...) for productions with a high degree of realism in both image and agent s behavior. This method uses modeling in fuzzy logic and programming in the MASSIVE system as the main approach to integrate the results with rendering systems and high-resolution images composition. An important goal of this dissertation is to create a system that facilitates the work of modelers and designers involved in the production pipeline.

A próxima revolução tecnológica, desde o surgimento da Internet, já está acontecendo e é um fenômeno denominado convergência digital. Impulsionado pelo desenvolvimento da computação pervasiva, em que dispositivos (celulares, PDAs, PCs), mídias (rádio, TV, jornal, Internet) e redes (celulares, Wi-Fi, TV digital) convergem, este processo está mudando a forma como cada um de nós interage com o ambiente através da tecnologia. Atualmente já existem dispositivos móveis com múltiplas interfaces de rede e, conseqüentemente, acesso a diversas fontes de dados, como Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a rede celular e, mais recentemente, a rede de TV digital móvel. Estas diversas interfaces de rede geram um acesso desordenado a serviços remotos nos aparelhos móveis, complicando a experiência do usuário final, em vez de facilitá-la. O sistema de TV digital móvel, por si só, é um exemplo de uma tecnologia que agrega serviços de diversas redes, pois o conteúdo de áudio e vídeo é transmitido via rede broadcast, enquanto a interatividade é provida através de um canal unicast, como a rede celular, por exemplo. Como conseqüência dessa convergência de redes, tornou-se crucial para o desenvolvedor de aplicações, assim como para os usuários, que o acesso aos serviços remotos seja transparente da rede utilizada. Buscando prover esta transparência, portanto, é proposto neste trabalho um middleware para a convergência de serviços em TV digital móvel e redes sem fio, denominado middleconv, que possui mecanismos de descoberta, de execução e de monitoramento de serviços de aplicação disponíveis nas diversas interfaces de rede de um dispositivo móvel. Syftet med denna studie var att undersöka vad publiken känner när de ser på tv-serier och vad som motiverar publiken till att följa dem. Tillgången till tv-serier har ökat under de senaste åren på grund av internets utveckling och i takt med detta har också konsumtionen ökat. För att undersöka vad publiken har för känslor för de tv-serier de följer har kvalitativa intervjuer utförts med fem informanter som flitigt ser på tv-serier. Materialet har analyserats utifrån teorier om reception av film- och tv-tittande. Resultatet visade på att tv-serier får publiken att känna en samhörighet, eller en vänskap, till karaktärerna i sina tv-serier, det får dem att reflektera över sin tillvaro, fly verkligheten och samtidigt får tv-serier publiken att må bra. Dessa resultat kan vara motiv till varför publiken fortsätter att se på tv-serier, avsnitt efter avsnitt.

Esta dissertação aborda recepção da mídia por parte de sujeitos surdos e a produção da análise de narrativas surdas, como a mídia sem som faz circular enunciados sobre os surdos e como estes recebem o que está sendo veiculado pela mídia sem som. Foram analisadas narrativas de pessoas surdas sobre alguns programas televisivos que contam com a presença de intérpretes de Língua de Sinais, programas que possuem legendas em Português, e programas que não possuem qualquer tipo de tradução para surdos. Foi possível conhecer o que essas pessoas entendem e captam do que estava sendo veiculado pelos programas que utilizam diferentes recursos ao transmitirem suas mensagens à estes telespectadores. A pesquisa traça caminhos que apontam para a questão das identidades surdas e a volatilidade de entendimentos em relação à mídia por parte dos surdos, suas interpretações, desejos e anseios em relação à televisão. A televisão é vista na pesquisa como um artefato cultural que comunica e constitui a todos os que direta ou indiretamente estão diante dela. Orientando-se pelos Estudos Culturais e pelos Estudos Surdos, a pesquisa buscou forte inspiração nos Estudos de Recepção para olhar e problematizar as narrativas surdas sobre o que assistem e entendem dos programas televisivos. Atestou-se que nas narrativas surdas a mídia com legenda é preferida em relação a outras modalidades de apresentação, pois esta permite aos surdos que dominam a leitura tenham uma compreensão rica e detalhada da informação transmitida. Os intérpretes, quando aparecem na televisão, ficam no canto da tela num enquadramento muito pequeno, o que dificulta que os surdos visualizem bem os sinais. Na visão deles a presença do intérprete possibilita viver emoções não experienciadas nos programas que possuem legenda em Português. No entanto, esta modalidade de comunicação/tradução, por não ter qualidade de imagem na maioria dos programas, impossibilita aos surdos o acesso às informações e a permanência prazerosa em frente à televisão. Estes alegam desconforto gerado pelo esforço visual feito para entender o que está sendo traduzido. Admitindo que as imagens possibilitadas pela televisão interpelam aos surdos de modo particular e significativo - pois o visual é um traço cultural surdo - os sujeitos que participaram da pesquisa alegam que em relação à mídia sem tradução — em legendas ou intérpretes —, perde-se grande parte do que está sendo transmitido, e estes não tem condições de afirmar com consistência o que conseguiram ler através daquelas imagens. Consequentemente, os surdos preferem não se pronunciar sobre o que viram, embora admitam que, aquilo que conseguiram captar das imagens aparecem no seu cotidiano através das roupas, modismos e dos desejos de consumo. Através da cultura visual, os surdos tendem a narrar-se como sujeitos que compartilham de uma cultura midiática mais ampla, traduzindo e ressignificando elementos da mídia, incorporando e movimentando sua cultura e sua língua. Considerando que não há discussões e pesquisas acadêmicas enfocando o sujeito surdo como receptor de imagens de mídia televisiva, nem mesmo como sujeito aprendiz a partir do que assiste, este trabalho apresenta uma abordagem nova na pesquisa em Educação.
This academic study is about the reception of media by deaf people and the analysys production of deaf narratives, such as the soundless media which exerts a certain influence over them and how do they receive it by the soundless media. Deaf people narratives were analyzed about the use of Brazilian sign Language and closed caption system in Portuguese on TV programs as well as the lack of it on some of these programs. It was possible to get to know what this people can get from it and really understand from what was being transmited.by programs that make use of the translation resources already mentioned in order to reach this specific public. This research presents ways that lead to “deaf identities” and their levels of understanding regarding media, their comprehension, desires, anxieties related to television. The TV is presented in this study as a cultural device which communicates, directly or not, to everyone seated in front of it. The Cultural Studies, Deaf Studies and Reception Studies – this one specially – were used to guide this research, to find the difficulties of the deaf narratives about what do they absorb and understand from TV programs. Through this narratives it was found out that media with subtitles it is on the top being preferred instead of translators, because it allows those deaf that can read to obtain a rich and detailed information. The translators, when are shown on TV, they appear in a small squared box, what making it hard for deaf to see and understand the signs properly. For them, having a translator helps them to put life on the information received – what it´s not possible when all they have is subtitles. However, this way of communication/translation due to lack of image quality in most of this programs this makes impossible for the deaf ones to have access to the information in its integrity and also put them off o watching TV. They feel unconffortable with all the effort they have to put in order to understand what it has been translated. It´s a fact that images coming from television touch deaf people in a very particular way – which is also part of they culture – those ones that contributed for this study say that regarding to media with no translation – no subtitles, no translators – that they miss great part of what it is being transmited and they can´t say for sure what they could grasp from those images, although some of the images do appear on their daily lives, such as clothing, trends, and objects of their desire. Trough their visual culture the deaf tend to expose themselves as those who share a wider mediatic culture, translating and giving a new meaning to some of the media elements, incorporating and putting into motion their own culture and language. Taking in account there are no discussions, academic researches pointing to the deaf as an image receptor from TV media, and not even as a learner from what he sees this study presents a new topic on educational research.

Mensurar os impactos do tráfego de aplicações interativas para TV Digital nas redes sem fio de 4a geração em especial WIMAX e femtocell tem sido um grande desafio para pesquisadores em todo o mundo, o teste destas tecnologias se mostra promissora para a melhor qualidade de serviço prestado pelas operadoras. Inicialmente, identificando o padrão de tráfego de rede através da aferição e caracterização de tráfego de uma aplicação interativa de TV Digital do Sistema Brasileiro de TV Digital (SBTVD). A partir de então, as simulações são feitas sobre uma rede sem fio. Para este estudo, a rede WiMAX foi escolhida como um de nossos estudo de caso. Um estudo dos impactos do uso desta aplicação em uma WMAN (Wireless Metropolitan Área Network) com WiMAX e também utilizando femtocells. Evidentemente, tecnologias sem fio apresentam uma grande variação da qualidade do sinal. Deste modo, é necessário utilizar uma solução para reduzir essa degradação no sinal. Dentre as possíveis soluções, o uso de femtocells surge como alternativa viável para estas melhorias, lembrando que uso de femtocell esta diretamente ligado para áreas onde o sinal é zero ou muito baixo. A utilização de simulações discretas através de ferramentas apropriadas como o OPNET, se mostram bastante úteis para viabilizar a utilização das tecnologias existentes, expondo-as a condições mais adversas de fluxo, carga , numero de usuários e distancias que certamente influenciam no desempenha de cada uma delas.
Traffic measurement on Digital TV interactive applications for fourth generation networks, especially WiMAX and femtocell, has been a challenge to researchers around the world. The traffic pattern of an interactive application on the Brazillian System of Digital TV (SBTVD) was identified. Simulations on a wireless network were carried out using data obtained of traffic analysis. In this work a WiMAX and a femtocell network were chosen to simulate the return channel of a Digital TV application on a WMAN (Wireless Metropolitan Area Network). In order to reduce signal attenuation, femtocell arises as a promising solution, reducing macrocell usage, as femtocells cover indoor environments. The simulations is this work were executed using OPNET software. Through them it is possible to estimate the feasibility of femtocell and WiMAX technologies as return channel for Digital TV.

Premettendo che il dibattito sociale sulla parità di genere è in continua evoluzione e il concetto stesso di genere sta oggigiorno assumendo delle connotazioni differenti rispetto a un tempo, con il presente elaborato si ha intenzione di indagare dove e in che misura siano ancora presenti gli stereotipi di genere nella televisione. Considerata la retorica attuale sull’importanza dell’individuo di esprimersi secondo le proprie scelte personali senza farsi influenzare da vecchi preconcetti sui ruoli di genere, spariranno dagli scaffali gli articoli con la scritta “da uomo” o “da donna” e i prodotti con un target di genere specifico? Sarà possibile in un futuro prossimo ripensare alle nozioni di mascolinità e di femminilità in termini di mercato? Viene qui presentata una tesi di tipo comparativo sul gender marketing tra l’Italia e gli Stati Uniti che proprio per il tema molto attuale trattato e per il confronto tra i due stati, aspira a dare un apporto significativo al dibattito in merito. Una parte di questa ricerca è stata realizzata per due mesi nel campus di Chico della California State University, dove è stato possibile avere accesso ai materiali bibliografici in loco e un confronto diretto con gli esperti del settore. Dopo una parte iniziale sul gender marketing (ovvero il marketing rivolto a uno specifico genere); ci si soffermerà sull’analisi di alcuni casi di studio che avverrà secondo tre metodi di indagine: analisi del palinsesto, studio della presenza social dei casi indagati e ricerche delle parole chiave su Google tramite i dati SEO (Search Optimitation Engine), che saranno spiegati ampiamente nell’elaborato. Tramite lo studio dei canali televisivi selezionati e una serie di esempi sugli advertising più popolari nelle due nazioni prese a confronto si analizzerà l’impatto che questi prodotti hanno sul pubblico domandandosi se esistano ancora in televisione determinati prodotti promossi a livello pubblicitario per un genere o per un altro.

Resumo: o assunto deste trabalho e um sistema digital de processamento de imagens para transmissão de sinais de televisão comercial do sistema PAL (Phase Alternated Line) padrão M. O sistema tem por função a redução da taxa de bit de transmissão. Ele e uma variação do Differential Pulse Code Modulation (DPCM), ao qual foi dado o nome Quotient Pulse Code Modulation (QPCM). Foram feitas algumas modificações nas operações realizadas pelo sistema DPCM, porém, manteve-se a mesma estrutura. O sistema QPCM foi implementado em "software" para simulação em ambiente VAX/VMS. Foram implementados alguns preditores e quantizadores para o sistema, porém, estes são usados em esquema fixo. Os preditores são de terceira ordem e usam esquema de predição sem Técnica de Amarração de Fase (TAF), o que significa a desconsideração do chaveamento PAL, mesmo usando amostras da linha prévia do mesmo campo. Os quantizadores são estatísticos e foram implementados especificamente para as características do sistema QPCM. A meta a se atingir é uma taxa de bit compatível com a terceira hierarquia PCM padronizada pelo CCITT que é de 34 Mb/s. Essa taxa deve ser atingida mantendo-se a qualidade para TV comercial. Serão realizadas simulações com imagens padrão da Society Motion Picture Television Engineers (SMPTE) e feitas avaliações objetivas e subjetivas para se testar o desempenho do sistema QPCM. The main goal of this dissertation is to study the Xlet-based interactive applications (such as advertisements, games, government services and early warning applications) in the digital television broadcasting environment and to improve their versatility, usability and interoperability through the simplification of their codes and content management methods. The EU had set an obligation for its member states to begin digital television broadcasting by 2012, therefore the development of such systems prior to this deadline had become a task of utmost importance in recent years. At present, there are two major systems of digital video broadcasting (DVB), which are DVB-HTML and DVB-J (DVB-Java). I decided to give more emphasis on DVB-J for my research, mainly because it’s more compatible with the interactive applications that are created with Java-based Xlets, and also because it’s easier to use, modify and update; hence the reason why DVB-J is the system that’s preferred by a larger number of television broadcasting corporations worldwide. DVB-J is also the digital video broadcasting standard that’s compatible with a larger number of MHP (Multimedia Home Platform, or DVB-MHP) systems that are utilized by the set-top-boxes for receiving interactive content (in the form of Xlets) during digital television broadcasts; as well as by handheld devices and web-based internet television networks. As of today, Italy (which has a large and expanding DVB-T network) is one of the leading countries in the world that extensively utilize DVB-MHP systems for sending and receiving interactive content during IDTV broadcasts. By 2009, several administrative regions in Italy had already completed the switch-off process of their analog broadcasting systems and had gone all-digital. Numerous interactive services are currently available in the IDTV broadcasting environment of Italy, ranging from IDTV-commerce and IDTV-government services to the use of a growing number of internet content. At present, the terrestrial antennas for sending the aerial digital signals of the DVB-T networks aren’t capable of receiving any return signals for interaction by mobile handsets like the DVB-H, therefore interactivity is currently limited to internet connection through DSL in stationary devices or to mobile telephone services in the outdoor environments. Internet connection, however, allows the interoperability between different types of stationary and mobile devices, such as television sets, PCs, notebook computers, mobile phones, DVB-H, BlackBerry and iPod. Due to the complexities which arise from the burden of having to provide an efficient and safe interoperability between an ever-increasing number of different device types, I based my research on developing a CMS that’s simple, flexible and easy to upgrade. Since Xlets are Java applets that are developed for digital television broadcasting, I have so far concentrated on the utilization of Java TV API in platforms that are capable of receiving digital and interactive content, such as TV set-top-boxes, DVB-H, and the latest generation of cell phones. In order to optimize the use of such digital and interactive content, which become more diffused and complex through constant innovations, it is necessary to develop an IESG (Integrated Electronic Service Guide) system, due to the ever-increasing traffic of digital and interactive content. The IESG is particularly effective in categorizing the contents and optimizing their availability to the users through a more sensitive search which yields better results, thus saving both bandwidth and user time. In the following chapters, I have explained the methods that I used for the creation of simple and quick (optimized in terms of downloading and running time) Xlets for the IDTV broadcasting environment; and the elaboration of a basic and versatile content management system to store and run these Xlet-based applications by a Set-Top-Box, the functions and properties of which are emulated by the XleTView software. The themes that I chose for the Xlets are the Earthquake and Tsunami Early Warning application, the Recent Seismic Activity Report application, and the Emergency Services application.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate if female and male reporters and interviewees get the same amount of time in the news feature in the Swedish news programs TV4-Nyheterna and SVT 1 Rapport. The aim of this study was also to investigate if there is a breakdown of the reporting lines between male and female reporters, that is, if they are reporting on various topics. In our study we also determined if the two television channels in any way are different when it comes to gender. Our main theory was that men are overrepresented both among reporters and interviewees and that they are dominant in both hard and soft news. We thought that SVT 1Rapport would have a better gender balance than TV4-Nyheterna because SVT 1 has been working on gender issues for a long time. We were using a quantitative content analysis to examine the 19:30 news on SVT 1 Rapport and 22:00 news on TV4-Nyheterna for two weeks in November 2010. We examined domestic and foreign news and determined how much time each sex got. Then we calculated the number of seconds and converted it into percent. The reason for this was because we wanted to compare the two television channels. Our study showed that men are overrepresented in both channels when it comes to reporters and interviewees in the news. Men are also the dominant sex in the provision of hard and soft news. TV4-Nyheterna, however, had a better gender balance than SVT 1 Rapport.

Denna studie utfördes med syfte att studera hur andra generationens invandrare i Sverige upplever representationen i västerländska TV-serier och huruvida deras verklighetsbild kring landet överstämde med det fiktiva. Studien analyseras utifrån ett postkolonialt perspektiv med teorier som inkluderar Orientalism, representation och stereotyper. Frågeställningen grundade sig i huruvida dessa intervjupersoner kände sig representerade och om bilden av kulturen och landet var rättvist gestaltad samt hur de upplevde serierna kontra verkligheten. Metoden som användes för att besvara frågeställningen var kvalitativa intervjuer där resultatet visade att intervjupersonernas verklighet upplevelser inte stämde överens med vad som visats i serierna då mycket utav det som framställt var enligt deras tolkningar konstruerade stereotyper.
This study was conducted with the purpose of studying how the second generation of immigrants in Sweden experience the representation in western television series and how their reality image of the country overlooked the fictive. The study is analyzed based on postcolonial perspectives and theories that include representation, orientalism and stereotypes. The aim was based on whether or not these interviewees felt represented and if the image of the culture and the country were fairly visualized and how they experienced the series vs reality. The method used to answer the question was qualitative interviews where the results showed that the actual experiences of the interviewees did not match with what was shown in the series. Based on their interpretations a big part of the series was constructed by stereotypes.

Resumo: A transmissão de vídeo em redes Wireless é abordada pela pesquisa, devido o grande aumento na utilização dessas redes na ultima década. O acesso à banda larga por essas redes é feito de forma eficiente, rápida e com baixo custo de implementação e manutenção da rede. A motivação para o desenvolvimento é utilizar essas redes e a rede IPTV para promover a interatividade e uma forma do canal de retorno para Sistemas de Televisão Digital, que estão sendo implementadas atualmente no Brasil. O canal de Retorno da TV Digital é importante para o sistema, pois um dos objetivos é prover a interatividade entre os usuários. Isso deve ser feito de forma simples com baixo custo e com tecnologia compatível a região do usuário. A simulação trata de um sistema de transmissão unicast que seria semelhante a uma interatividade local e dedicada. O usuário transmite o conteúdo de uma só vez. Os dados que são transmitidos pela provedora de serviços, são armazenados no set-top-box, e só são modificados em caso de novo fluxo de dados, quando há atualização ou acesso a nova área de serviços. Os testes feitos durante a pesquisa, transmitem conteúdo em tempo real e avaliam de forma quantitativa o desempenho das redes IEEE 802.11b e IEEE 802.11g.
Abstract: The streaming video transmission on Wireless networks is concerned in the research due to the large increase in the use of such networks in the last decade. Broadband access for these networks is made efficiently, quickly and with low implementation and maintenance costs of the network. The motivation for developing this research is to use these networks and IPTV network to promote interactivity and a return channel for digital television system, currently being implemented in Brazil. The return channel is important for the Digital TV system, because one of the goals is to provide interactivity for the users. This should be done in a simple, low cost way and with technology compatible in the region of the user. The simulation deals with a unicast transmission system which is similar to a local and dedicated interactivity. The user transmits all the contents at once. The data transmitted by a service provider are stored on set-top box and are modified only in case of new data flow, when there are updates or access to new area of services. The tests performed during the research, it was broadcasted contents in real time and evaluated quantitative the performance of IEEE 802.11b and IEEE 802.11g networks.

El objetivo de esta investigación es describir la naturaleza de TV Perú y las implicancias de ser un “canal de todos los peruanos”, a través de la indagación en su modo de construir contenidos periodísticos (agenda building), su aporte a la calidad democrática como agente de supervisión de otras agencias estatales y en cuán representativo resulta para una ciudad rural del Perú como Maras (Urubamba, Cusco). Para ello, estudia las relaciones que se tejen entre los encargados de emitir información y las fuentes de información que utilizan o personajes influyentes, tomando en cuenta que su modelo de gestión y fuentes de financiamiento otorgan al medio televisivo ciertas características específicas. En el camino se reconoce las expectativas de sus televidentes del ámbito rural que prácticamente no cuentan con otra opción televisiva de nitidez y alcance nacional y cuyas posibilidades de participar en el medio de comunicación como espacio público, ser “fuente de información” para sus periodistas o “influenciar la agenda mediática” son menores.

Superati «novant’anni d’impazienza» e dopo un lungo periodo votato all’autocommento e all’esplorazione delle proprie intenzioni, Raffaele La Capria ha raccolto le sue opere in due Meridiani curati da Silvio Perrella. La Capria ne ha celebrato l’uscita nella prolusione inaugurale di Salerno Letteratura, poi confluita nel breve autoritratto narrativo "Introduzione a me stesso" (2014). In questa sede, l’autore è tornato su alcuni punti essenziali della sua riflessione sulla scrittura, come la relazione, reciproca e ineludibile, fra tradizione e contemporaneità. All’epilogo del «romanzo involontario» di una vita, La Capria guarda retrospettivamente alla propria esperienza come ad un’autentica educazione intellettuale. Perciò, muovendo da un’intervista inedita del 2015, riportata integralmente in appendice, la tesi ha l’obiettivo di ricostruire l’apprendistato letterario di La Capria dai primi anni Trenta, quando l’autore ancora frequentava il ginnasio, fino all’inizio dei Sessanta, quando ottenne il premio che ne avrebbe assicurato il successo. In the early days, there were only three Television networks with their own actor management departments that provides travelling expenses and year-end bonus and barred contract actors to appear and perform on other networks. Competition in the entertainment industry became fierce after the releasing of cable televisions licences to private sectors. However, with decrease of spending on production costs on entertainment programs on cable television networks , a large scale of importing foreign dramas from China and Korea to bring down the cost of program productions which worsen the television industry in Taiwan. SET TV network established SET Talents, an actor management department, to fulfill the demands for actors on its long running television drama series. Initially, SET TV calls on actors through talent agencies for guarantee casting. However, as number of contract actors increased, SET TV removes the guarantee of casting for its contract actors and collect commission on casting on its own television series and as well as to limit its contract actors to appear in other television networks without advanced approval from the network. The opportunities for contract actors to cast become much limited since SET Talents has more than 200 contract and cooperating actors. In this study, with combining document analysis and in-depth interviews as study methods to understand the trilateral interaction model between SET TV, actors and talent agencies and summarized with the following research objectives and questions: (1) The operating model for SET Talents, (2) The purpose of the contract between actors and talent agencies, (3) The actors' work ethic, and (4) The role and function of talent agencies. This study discovered that with SET Talnets' abilities to develop and create its own television series and programs with sharing resources from its own network, it generally affect the income for cooperating actors and talent agencies. Moreover, with the prohibition of appearing in other commercial networks, the casting opportunities for the contract actors are restricted. Furthermore, many actors are unfamiliar with their own labor rights and would take all kind of casting calls from the network to avoid negative impacts on their employment opportunities. Therefore, the role and function of the cooperating talent agencies would be limited and in most cases, became free assistant to the actors. In addition, this study conclude the following six recommendations for SET Talents: (1) Restoring guarantee casting contract, the implementation of equality between rights and duties, (2) Abolishing the collection of commission on casting on the network's own television drama series and programs, (3) Placing an automatic termination clause into the contract for actors without acting calls for over an year period, (4) Cancelling the limitations of contract actors to appear in other television networks, (5) Cancelling tacit cooperation, to ensure fairness to the contract actors, (6) Investing and developing world-class television drama series aim for global market.

This thesis describes how to control over Set-Top-Box for restricting non-permitted users to access to pay TV programs. To satisfy this purpose, techniques of data compression are applied to transmit necessary information for permission control. The compressed data are part of input data demanded by the reset procedure. And the reset data will be routinely broadcast to every box. The method proposed in this thesis solves the problem under investigation, but it demands more computation just before each broadcast of the reset data. This drawback is, nevertheless, tolerable, taking advantage of the greatly enhanced power of modern computers.v

According to the statistics of the 2nd quarter of 2018, the National Communications Commission (NCC) showed that the total number of households in the country was 8,686,300, the penetration rate of cable TV services was 59.37%, and the number of set-top box (STB) subscribers was 5,156,800. The rate is 99.7%. The government has been striving to promote the digitalization policy of cable TV for many years. The number of STB subscribers in Hualien County has increased year by year. Although the penetration rate has reached 92.36%, it is still the lowest in Taiwan, only higher than the outlying islands of Kinmen and Lianjiang County. Compared with the national STB subscriber penetration rate, it still has not reached the policy target of 100%. The digitalization of cable TV in Hualien County has reached 100 in the third quarter of 2018 through the efforts of the operators, viewers and the government. The digital policy project is completed one year earlier than the end of 2019 requested by the NCC. (Source: National Communications Commission website) Based on Ram and Sheth’s innovative resistance theory, this study explores the process of promoting the installation of STB from both the perspectives of cable operators and viewers. In terms of cost considerations, in the process of promoting digitalization in the remote areas, the attitude of taking a wait-and-see attitude was adopted at the beginning, and the viewers also resisted the movement of the machine-mounted boxes because of the change of habits. In terms of government policies, in order to make the cable The TV industry can actively digitize and formulate the “reward” and “punishment” methods to provide equipment subsidies for the set-up boxes and related digitalization procedures. The penalty part is the cable TV evaluation once every 3 years and the nine-year license renewal. They are required to the cable TV stations to cooperate with the digitalization work, and the digitalization work is listed as the key point for evaluation and license renewal. The research of Hualien cable TV stations promote set-top boxes in remote districts from both the perspectives of Cable TV stations and viewers, and to explore the innovative resistance theory generated by the digitalization in the remote areas. The various resistances of users, the study found that when the viewers use the innovative use of the set-top boxes, they will initially resist the change of the status quo, resist installation, and get used to maintaining the status quo, but because of the improved viewing quality after installing the STB, the viewers are willing to change the viewing habits, accept and adopt new technology, Hualien cable TV operators overcome the obstacles and overcome the obstacles in the government policy pressure and subsidy, complete the goal of comprehensive digitalization, the development of the STB towards the diversification is the industry, local government, the expectation of the agency and the audience.

Abstract The digitization of TV industry is a definite development policy of our country in “Year 2002 to 2007 Country development key plan” published by Executive Yuan in 2002. The plan explains and defines clearly about TV digitization implementation strategy and process schedule. In the face of the transition and business opportunities brought by TV digitization, all kinds of media industries players devoted themselves into this big campaign. And the key factor of TV digitization is the application and promotion of DTV Set-Top-Box. The purpose of this research is to understand the desire difference of using three kinds of different DTV Set-Top-Box, including wired, wireless and Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) MOD Set-Top-Box. I personally propose the following topics for further research and discussion in this report. First of all, what is the life style characteristic of the DTV Set-Top-Box users, non-users and potential users? Second, what’s the willing difference of using DTV Set-Top-Box between different life style group users? Third, the comparison of DTV Set-Top-Box user behavior between different life style groups. In this research, I divided the target users into four member groups according to their unique life style characteristics; they are “Fashion girl student group”, “Hard working young group”, “Conservative housekeeping group”, and “Active middle-aged group”. The research data shown “Hard working young group” members are the major DTV Set-Top-Box users and also the largest potential users. This group members age between 25 and 30 years old, and most of them are male. They pay much attention to their jobs but also know how to relax themselves. The second largest DTV Set-Top-Box user group is “Active middle-aged group”. This group members have the highest educational background and income in the four research groups. Besides, they care much about the program content quality rather than the price of DTV Set-Top-Box. “Conservative housekeeping group” have the second highest willing to purchase the DTV Set-Top-Box. Once the Set-Top-Box's price drop to an acceptable price, they will possibly buy them immediately. Furthermore, “Fashion girl student group” is the less potential user group, also with the least usage rate, for DTV Set-Top-Box market. These members are the youngest, most of them are still students and female. Therefore, they also lack for the purchasing power and economic independency. This research data also find out the majority of DTV Set-Top-Box user purchased are wireless boxes, wired boxes take the second place, and CHT MOD Set-Top-Box is the fewest one. Finally, I also propose two suggestions as guideline reference for the popularization of the digital TV. First, improve the popularity of DTV Set-Top-Box actively. Second, improve the program content quality of the digital TV consistently.

Under the guidance of the policy, communication media have done so many things to transform themselves, adjusted their report content, and put much more emphasis on economic reports. All these changes have greatly influenced Mainland China. The study''s topic is comparisons of the economic report content and propaganda strategies in CCTV set one and set four. The methodology used in the study is content analysis. The result shows that there are differences between economic reports produced respectively by CCTV set one and four. The differences lies in report topics, news resources, report areas, reporting ways, structures, attitude orientation and propaganda strategies. CCTV plays an important role in disseminating reform messages nationally and opens functions internationally. The economic reports in CCTV set one and four reflects the government''s reform and open policies. Typical and topical reports are used to enforce propaganda nationally and internationally. Nationally the reports promote economic reforms in order to create sound investment environment. People''s Republic of China holds tight control of propaganda, using communication media as propaganda tools. Reform and open policy is the most important policy for the present. Closer examination on CCTV''s economic reports helps us to analyze how the government proceeds the reform and open policy. For media researchers'' further study, this result can be based as a basis.

Traditional analogue TVs are expected to be replaced by digital TVs in the very near future. Unlike the traditional TV system, the digital TV architecture allows users to execute application programs in their set-top-boxes. One of the benefits is that users can communicate interactively with their broadcasters or even other subscribers by executing certain programs via some channels, e.g. The Internet. However, the only input device for users is the remote controller, which has rather limited transmission range. In this thesis, we propose a system that allows mobile devices, e.g. mobile phones, laptops and PocketPCs, to control set-top-box. For future compatibilities, we adopt MHP (Multimedia Home Platform) as our middleware in the set-top-box. Server programs and client programs are implemented by Java. Our system provides two services: one is to view the digital contents online; and the other is for users to command MHP server to record a TV program. We assume that in the future inside every house there will be a “Personal Multimedia Server”. This server serves the functions of transcoding DTV contents to video streaming data and broadcasting to the Internet. Also, it plays the role as web server. Users can connect to the MHP server by mobile phones via GPRS. They can also let the web server be the third party to communicate with the MHP server by browsing the web site.

And the development stance for the listed electronic media cooperated with bandwidth network manufacturers in the future could be predicted. With tremendous raising of global communication and web concept stocks, on market, it’s to start changing the traditional idea on wireless TV companies’ basic aspect and development potentiality that wireless TV companies become the web concept stock. Therefore, under the effect of listing, revision of law, trans-investment and turn of class stock, wireless TV companies have their investment value. As to how to select a wireless TV company as an investment target? What investors should note is the interest the TV companies could bring for investors, namely, the enterprise value of the company. Thus, this research establishes the enterprise evaluation analytic hierarchical structure for wireless TV companies, further adopts fuzzy multi-criteria decision method to calculate the order of enterprise value for every wireless TV company as the principle of investment decision. The algorithm is based on the concepts of triangular fuzzy number and linguistic variable to assess the preference ratings of linguistic variable, ''importance'' and ''satisfaction''. The subjects can employ an assumed rating set to show the individual perception of the linguistic variables. We use the Chang and Chen''s ranking method to rank the final scores of the enterprise value of the TV company for investment decision.

This study mainly discuses how consumer's knowledge and innovationess correlate with Digital TV set-top box adoption. This research combines network questionnaire and qualitative research , granting the questionnaire from December 20, 2005 till March 06, 2006, taking 3 months and 16 days, receiving 1265 questionnaires. After rejecting those with incomplete answers, mistakes and those of uplicate, 1167 effective questionnaire were analysed. The result of study finds the higher the level of the consumer's product knowledge and innovationess is, the higher the will of adopting Digital TV set-top box gets. Summarizing the discovery of this research, persons who adopt Digital TV set-top boxes in early timing are: 1, male; 2, the highly-educated; 3, the one with relatively high social status; 4, the one with high disposable income; 7, relatively active to ask information; 8, using network frequently; 9, owning high-tech products and relatively more knowledge about them. In addition, the use of analogue TV, network, high-tech products can have influence on consumers’ Digital TV set-top box adoption, too.

The world changes over time. The television is digitalized with the revolution of information technologies. Digital TV becomes a part of ordinary family life. Comparing to the traditional TV, the digital one provides better picture quality and interactive functionalities instead of just receiving one-way programs. In common families, TV takes higher generality than computers and other mobile devices. In these mentioned devices, TV is the simplest one to operate. Because of such advantages, there are many opportunities and chances in the digital TV industry. For archiving better performance on digital learning, it is necessary for integrating quiz and testing components with current e-learning systems. It is the best way to arise the learning efficiency by checking students’ learning achievements using test mechanism and correcting the wrong answers they made. The purpose of this paper is to develop a QTI-based Assessment Platform compliant with MHP standard on Digital TV.

Thus, the present study is, therefore, desirable from digital convergence the perspective of the three established television stations face the external environment drastic change in coping strategies adopted, and Dynamic Capabilities Theory of Sanlih Television coping strategy is to make the companies face severe environmental changes still have a competitive advantage, finally, successful induction methods, models and thinking in the future may be provided to other television media organizations for operator reference. The results show Sanlih Television development of new media strategy is quite consistent with the theory of dynamic capabilities, with the company owner is the management system of decision-makers in rapidly changing environments can quickly and clearly under the decision, and the use of other than the industry's self-drama the ability to expand into new media business, but the present study also found Sanlih television coordination and learning mechanisms in the organization and management of the process is still solid enough, such as simple, fast but lack of coordination operations SOP, and mutual cooperation is the lack of mutual understanding sector relations . Sanlih Television Hua Stream program and brand, has become the new media business development for precious technical units, complementary assets and goodwill, asset location and exclusive organizational processes with appropriate adjustments, it can create the industry's different from other competitive advantage, finally Sanlih TV when the development of new media services such as video platform, is the last path dependent companies, at this stage on the basis of observation is relatively successful, but it may also become a new stage of development when hamper.

Flat panel TV has been in a rapid growth period from 2004. The penertration rate of flat panel TV in the U.S. has rapidily increased from 10% to 94% from 2004 to 2009. The sales of flat panel TV in the U.S. has reached to 25~30% of the global sales. It goes without saying that the U.S. market is the most important and competitive market in the world. Before 2007, the majority of the U.S. flat panel TV market was occupied by some 1st-tier brands such like SONY, SHARP, SAMSUNG, and PHILIPS. Only few part of the maket share was left to several 2nd-, or 3rd-tier TV brands. However, VIZIO, as a new comer, dramatically broke up this balance. Not only steps out from the numerous 2nd-tier brands, VIZIO but also defeats the 1st-tier brands. In the 2nd quarter of 2007, VIZIO topped all other manufacturers as the #1 selling brand of flat panel TVs in the U.S. It was called as “the VIZIO shock”. To fight against “the VIZIO shock”, the 1st-tier brands had launched a competitive pricing war, and cut ths supplies of the flat panels for VIZIO. Under this circumstance, VIZIO was expelled out of the top 3 leading brands of sales. However, VIZIO miraculously returned back to the group of leading brands in a very short time. In 2009 Q1, VIZIO won the the #1 selling brand of flat panel TVs again. Till now, VIZIO still remains one of the top 3 best selling brands of flat panel TVs in the U.S. market. Under the extremely keen competition, it is very rare and commendable for a new comer like VIZIO to get and keep this great achievement from a scratch. The purpose of this study is to figure out VIZIO’s key success factors, and the co-opetition behavior of the flat panel TV market in USA. This study starts assessing the competition status of the TV industry by Michael Porter’s Five Forces Model. Then studying how VIZIO changed the competition relationship into co-optetion with the other parties in this industry. VIZIO benefits greatly by changing the competitive business game into co-optetive business game.
