Full textFounded in 1856 in Pont-à-Mousson (current Meurthe-et-Moselle), the company of the same name (abbreviated PAM) specialized in the production of cast iron pipes for water and gas supply. While it still had to make a name for itself, the firm was faced with a constraint domestic market. Its strategy included the continued use of sales outside mainland France, both abroad and in the colonies. The export policy it developed was continued throughout its growth. PAM became a group renowned for its financial management and international activity, and merged with Saint-Gobain in 1970. The abundance of its archives makes it possible to investigate the reasons and modalities of its export dynamism. It is then a case of understanding what this activity covered and what it involved. As a strategic axis, the development and role of the export policy within the firm are the first object of analysis. Between changes in the international context and internal industrial criteria, PAM’s export varied according to many factors. The organization and means deployed by PAM to conquer markets outside mainland France form the second field of investigation. Its sales force and the supplies obtained are discussed in general terms and by the deepening of case studies. At every stage, the impact of the export policy is estimated. The industrial and financial results then tend to foreshadow the modalities of its maintenance. The place of the export policy in the image and culture of the firm seems to be both an impact and a continuity factor
Fick, Gaël. "Analyse environnementale de l'utilisation de biomasse pour la production de tuyaux en fonte." Thesis, Université de Lorraine, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013LORR0078/document.
Full textHigh CO2 emissions from the industrial production of pig iron pipes are mainly due to the massive use of fossil carbon, coal and coke, as a fuel and/or a reducing agent in the processes. The use of biogenic carbon as a substitute for fossil carbon in order to reduce the CO2 emissions, in the case of an existing plant in Lorraine, was the starting point of our work. Different types of biomass were investigated. Local resources for wood and straw would be sufficient for a partial substitution for 20% of the coke. However, this kind of biomass should first undergo a thermal pretreatment step (drying and pyrolysis) to fit the technical requirements for the metallurgical processes (sinter plant, coke oven and blast furnace). Four scenarios of using biomass in the blast furnace or at the sinter plant were selected. To evaluate their environmental performances, we produced a comparative life cycle assessment, using a cradle-to-gate approach. An original feature of our study lies in the use of systems modeling for the determination of the life cycle inventories of the main processes, which were modeled using a flowsheeting software. From these models, particularly the model of the blast furnace, we could evaluate the replacement ratio of three biomass types (charcoal lumps, charcoal fines and torrefied wood fines) for the coke and predict the influence of biomass injection in the blast furnace on its operation. The results of the life cycle assessment show that the injection of pulverized, torrefied or carbonized, wood through the tuyeres of the blast furnace would be an attracting solution from an environmental point of view. It would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 15%, as well as mitigate the impacts on human health and ecosystems. Yet, the costs associated to such a solution are currently too high

Full textThe thermal conditions and the treatment of the liquid metal for centrifugal casting of pipes lead to the solidification of the melt in the form of spheroidal graphite (SG) iron throughout the thickness. However it is sometimes observed zones that are solidified within the white mode (eutectic austenite / cementite) mainly in the skin of the product. These areas lead to differences which could be problematic. Further characterization of the microstructure of pipes shows that competition between the nucleation and growth of stable and metastable eutectic growth exists from the beginning of solidification. To clarify the thermal conditions of this competition an experimental device has been used. Liquid metal droplet fall on a cold substrate. Rapid directionnal solidification occurs and the temperature evolution of the lower surface of the droplet is recorded during the very first moment of solidification (< 200 ms). Characterization of droplet microstructures obtained in as-cast state and after heat treatment showed that the device is able to froze the solidified microstructure in an earlier stage of formation than in the as cast pipe. A physical model describing the first instants of the solidification under very high thermal gradient of a cast iron which is inoculated and treated with Mg is presented, taking into account the kinetics of nucleation and growth of graphite nodules in competition with the solidification of the metastable eutectic. The comparison between the calcluated results and microstructural characterizations allows to specify microstructures devlopment scenarios by decoupling the influence of the thermal gradient and solidification rate
