Abstract:

Group problem solving tutorials have been in lise in the Department of Physics at the University of Cape Town for more than a decade. They are implemented with the belief that students have the opportunity to develop problem-solving skills through interacting with each other, and are able to make sense of physics concepts through conversation and reasoning with their peers. These problem solving sessions are supervised by tutors who are typically postgraduate students. The present project focused on understanding the role that these tutors play in facilitating learning in cooperative problem solving physics tutorials, and explored the factors that result in a group of students deciding to call a tutor, the different ways in which tutors interact with a group of students, and the factors which are related to the intervention of tutors that affect the learning outcomes in a physics cooperative learning session.

Evertsz, Rick. "The role of the crucial experiment in student modelling." Thesis, Open University, 1990. http://oro.open.ac.uk/56448/.

Full text
Abstract:
As the range of models which tutoring systems can capture is extended, efficient diagnosis becomes more difficult. This thesis describes a solution to this problem based on the generation of 'Critical Problems'; their role in student modelling is analogous to that of the 'Crucial Experiment' in science. We argue that great diagnostic power can be obtained by generating discriminatory problem examples. In general, efficient diagnosis is just not possible without such an hypothesis-testing capability. We describe a program, PO, which given a pair of production rule models and a description of the class of problems which the student must solve, generates an abstract specification of the problems which discriminate between those two hypotheses. Through a process termed 'Abstract Interpretation', PO tips the balance in favour of diagnostic measurement. The key to this problem lies in the realisation that we are only interested in the abstract mapping between a model's inputs and outputs; from the point of view of generating a Critical Problem, the intermediate processing of the model is irrelevant.

This research showed that one solution that can be used to help the students learn how to program is by providing a system that can behave like a tutor to teach the students individually. An intelligent tutoring system named CSTutor was built in this research to assist the students. CSTutor asks the student to write programs in a role playing environment, presenting the most appropriate tasks to the students, and provides help to the students' problems.

Introduction: The close interrelation between the processes of learning, assessment and feedback has been recognized and supported extensively in the educational field for many decades. The benefits of the feedback as a strong tool for facilitating learning have been corroborated by learning theories and educational research. The introduction of Problem- Based Learning (PBL) approaches to higher education programmes, especially in medical training, is a worldwide trend. The PBL approach to learning brings new perspectives to the specific characteristics and values of feedback on learning and the quality of learning and thus, more especially to the role of the tutor as learning facilitator. Purpose: To explore the medical students’ perception of the role and utility of the verbal feedback provided by the tutor to students during the PBL tutorial sessions; and the students’ perceptions on how to improve the effectiveness of the feedback. Methodology: This study used a qualitative and interpretive methodological approach. The qualitative data collection tool used was the focus group discussion. The study was conducted at the Walter Sisulu University in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa, where the faculty of Health Sciences has implemented the PBL approach for training. The research targeted the students in the third year of the MBChB program. Results: Students’ perceptions on the role of the tutorial feedback suggested that they strongly acknowledge its value: they see it as a tool for improving their learning skills and also as an enhancer of their learning motivation and regulation. The students also perceived it as instrumental in the modelling of programme-specific professional skills which would be required in their future medical practice. Students’ expectations from PBL-tutors feedback are quite high and comprehensive regarding both the kind and the nature of the feedback. Students perceived that the imperfections in the feedback received during tutorial sessions were a source of emotional discomfort and a hindrance to their learning success. The students’ need for clear, timely and regular provision of feedback, based on specific learning outcomes, was also highlighted. The participants’ recommendations for improving the efficient use of feedback included the regularization of the feedback practices across the different tutors and an increase in the allotted time for self-directed learning in their schedule. Conclusions: The results of this study support the need for a socio-constructive learning environment to ensure successful learning in PBL. Among other conditions, the harmonious provision of balanced, supportive and motivating feedback is a complement for the establishment of a learning environment conducive to learning. Similarly, students highlighted the need for highly skilled PBL-trained tutors, to enable them to self-monitor and self-regulate their learning, and ensure learning success via the facilitation and feedback. Higher Education Institutions using PBL training must identify and address factors limiting the effectiveness of the feedback and the overall quality of learning such as increased staff workload, increased demand for resources and modularization of courses. Recommendations: Higher education institutions using PBL training should address the need for training of tutors in the different aspects and practices of the feedback in the specific settings of the small group tutorial. External factors interfering with the effective use of tutors’ feedback should also be considered to minimize their negative impact on students’ learning. A regular process of curriculum enquiry is required to ensure the constructivist alignment of the different curricular components and overall design as a condition for the successful implementation of PBL.

Menary, Alvinia. "Retention or therapy? : the role of personal tutoring in a Further Education College." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/11381.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis focuses on personal tutoring and pastoral support and guidance in a Further Education College. In this study, I explore the relational dynamics and social construction of the role of the personal tutor and reveal alternative discourses concerned with the emergence of the ‘therapeutic’ in the sector. Within the current audit culture of Further Education, new pedagogies of practice are emerging in response to Government policy, regulation and control and I illuminate their impact upon the sector, noting the sites of conflicts for personal tutors engaged in the labour process as they mediate the ‘emotional learning agenda’. The research includes interview data from twenty personal tutors and nine senior managers (senior tutors), and also includes data from two focus groups. The twenty personal tutors are representative of a breadth of courses across the institution from Foundation Degree to Special Needs, teaching a range of subjects from Marine Science to Performing Arts. The focus groups represent new full-time and part–time trainees to the profession attending the Initial Teacher Training Course. The data was collected over two years from 2006, in a Further Education College in the South West of England called ‘Pendene’. Policy documents including Ofsted reports were also incorporated into the study as secondary data sources. In this research, I reveal that personal tutors at Pendene College were investing time and energy in the emotional lives of their students, in response to policy and practices related to retention and achievement which challenges the arguments from Ecclestone (2004), Furedi (2003) and Ecclestone and Hayes (2009) concerned with the expansion of therapy culture in Further Education. This significantly suggests a paradigmatic shift in the culture of pastoral care within the post-compulsory sector, one driven by the economics of retention. However, not all students were engaged in pastoral support and guidance and this study reveals a group labelled the ‘untutored’ who emerge as separate from those ‘needy’ students whom personal tutors support. Personal tutors were also ‘actors’ taking on different roles and analysing this process illuminated their propensity for engagement in emotional labour and labour processes within the hegemonic culture of Further Education.

Abstract:
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2013.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Over the last two decades, the deteriorating academic performance of first-year university students has led to the implementation of teaching and learning interventions, such as tutorial programmes, in various subjects at universities world-wide, including in South Africa. The changing nature of higher education has also led to the incorporation of more student-centred teaching approaches (such as tutorials) along with the traditional teacher-centred approaches (such as lectures). Consequently, tutorial programmes have become the topic of many research projects aimed at describing the function or operation of these programmes, or assessing their efficacy. As a compulsory or potentially compulsory subject for at least seven courses in three faculties at Stellenbosch University, English 178 has one of the highest annual student intakes at the institution. Considering the important role the subject is generally perceived to play in equipping all manner of students for the professional environment, it was imperative that the English 178 course’s primary learning intervention – its tutorial programme – be thoroughly evaluated in order to ensure its usefulness and the accomplishment of its purposes. This study investigated the role of tutors in the achievement of the English 178 course outcomes as perceived by students and tutors respectively. A combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods were employed to effect this assessment. The study found that when students arrive at English 178, they are underprepared for academic writing. According to the results, the course then equips students for the more basic aspects of this skill, such as formulating and developing an argument, and structuring an academic essay. However, advanced skills such as independent research and referencing are still problematic for many students by the end of English 178. In supporting students to acquire these academic skills, tutors have four roles, according to student and tutor perceptions: expositor, chairperson, teacher, and scaffolder. Based on these results, the English 178 course can be seen as an example of facilitated textual enquiry (FTE), a teaching and learning model introduced by this study, which constitutes a selective application of problem-based learning (PBL) principles to literary studies. FTE entails the scaffolded, partially-guided instruction of close reading, critical thinking and academic writing skills by a tutor-facilitator. The study posits that this type of model is indispensable in the achievement of course outcomes in the 21st-century academic landscape.

Abstract:
Thesis (MPhil)--University of Stellenbosch, 2000.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Technikon Southern Africa defined its role as distance learning institution with the implementation of the Integrated Learner Centred Distance Learning (ILCDE) model. This model implied the establishment of regional offices as well as the implementation of a tutor system. The tutor system implied the appointment of tutors at the different regional offices. In an attempt to take the distance out of distance learning the following functions of tutors were identified: • Telephone tutoring • Conducting contact sessions • Assessing assignments The focal point of this study was tutor development within a flexible learning system as no structured learning programmes for tutors exist at TSA. The purpose was to investigate and analyse the learning needs of tutors in a flexible learning system. Various critical questions stimulated this study. However, the following three questions formed the basis of this study: • What is the role of training and development in the tutor system? • Do tutors have a need for continuing professional learning programmes? If so, what . should the nature of such learning programmes be? • What should the criteria be to evaluate and monitor the development oftutors? A qualitative research approach was followed and the data was obtained by means of interviews and participative observation sessions. The subjects of the study were the tutors of the Subject Group: Management Leadership: Policing appointed for the registration period May 1998 - May 1999. One of the conclusions of the study was that the following processes regarding the tutor system need attention: • Recruitment and selection • Interviewing and appointment • Job descriptions • Orientation, training and development programmes • Evaluation and monitoring programmes • Role clarification • Marketing strategy The following recommendations were formulated: • A guide for the recruitment and appointment processes of its tutors should be compiled. • An assessment of the support needs of learners should be performed. • Establishing a continuing professional learning unit should be considered. • A proposal for learning interventions for continuing professional learning should be developed.

This study tries to comprehend the preceptor’s view upon medical residence and upon their role in the teaching-learning process. It starts from a panorama covering the historical evolution of medical residence, the building of the concept of a preceptor, the pedagogical issues and the related basis of moral construction. Based on these matters, the preceptor’s perceptions of the residence program on medical specialties in a teaching hospital have been analyzed. A descriptive research was carried out, using the nondirected interviews technique in order to study the phenomenon from the saying of 16 of these preceptors. By using content analysis, a connection between literary references and data has been made. The involvement in daily practical activities proved to be the basis of the learning-teaching process, looking up the development of technical and relational features. The theoretical study, the discussion of cases and scientific meetings are stimuli to the ability of reasoning. Despite the traditional strength of knowledge transmissions, the active attitude and the truly participation of the resident are of great value. The preceptor plays different roles. References to guide, mentor, supervisor and tutor were found. He plans, controls, guides; stimulates active thinking and attitude; analyzes performance; advise and takes care of the professional and personal improvement; observes and assess the resident while doing their duties; takes part in their moral construction.. It is noticeable the importance of the preceptor as an educator who creates the atmosphere where the learner is allowed to build and re-build knowledge. The preceptor teaches by performing technical procedures and moderating discussions of cases. They take the role of a clinical teacher, a professional who dominates the clinical practice and also the educational aspects related to it, transforming this moment into a propitious one of learning. The resident learns from various forms and the residence, beyond the teaching of a body of knowledge and skills must also enhance the acquisition of relational attributes, postures and attitudes which define the medical professionalism. The residence may and must be the medical teaching moment that the development of technical and relational features are covered and in which preceptor and resident make their daily duties as doctors an educational process as teacher and pupil. Accordingly, in their daily relationship with patients, both resident and preceptor have to be concerned about technical and ethics training to achieve professional quality in full.

Abstract:
The aim of the study was to explore what methods the personnel in five residential care homes in Götaland, Sweden, implement to integrate unaccompanied minors. The study investigated how and what methods are constructed as well as how the social interaction between the unaccompanied minors and the personnel at the homes bring about the learning of the methods. Five face-to-face semi-structured interviews were conducted and analysed through the perspective of social construction and social learning theory. The result revealed that the methods are not clearly identified by the personnel. The personals are still learning how to work with unaccompanied minors from their experiences. This indicates that the practice is at its infant stage. The study found a wide variety of methods, which were based on the child and where some methods intend to build good relationship, to integrate the children into society and to facilitate the development of strategies and methods. The study also addresses the issue of how the methods and strategies can be affected by the dynamic migratory flow and the question of evidence based practice within this field.

"'Conversations' with postgraduate writers understanding the role of the peer tutor." Thesis, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10210/1294.

Abstract:
M.Ed.
With transformation in higher education institutions in South Africa, writing centres were established in the early 1990s to cater for the diverse educational, social and cultural needs of students. Transformation and the call for teachers to become lifelong learners, has motivated many mature professionals to enter postgraduate study. The Faculty of Education’s Postgraduate Writing Support Centre at the University of Johannesburg was established in 2002 to offer writing support to such students. Through a multi-faceted case study, this paper explores the importance of collaborative conversations within a community of student writers in constructing knowledge. It seeks through the narrative of three different tutoring contexts, to understand the role of the peer tutor in facilitating these conversations with postgraduates in support of their writing. The findings of this study suggest to faculty that a tutor training programme needs to be developed to ensure effective and successful writing support, and in addition the postgraduate programme should be reviewed to incorporate support and continued supervision through all stages of study.

Abstract:
M.Ed.
This study focuses on a tutor development programme within an academic literacies module called Language for the Economic Sciences (LES). Coordination of the LES module encompasses tutor development as tutors are the primary facilitators of the module. LES forms part of an Extended Degree Programme within the Faculty of Economic Sciences devised to meet the needs of “underprepared” first year students at the University of Johannesburg (UJ). To this end, LES falls within the ambit of academic development at UJ as it is designed and coordinated by an Academic Development practitioner. Higher Education in South Africa has in the recent past shifted from relatively elitist to a mass system of education with the aim to foster democratic nation building. One of the major changes that has occurred is the merger of a number of institutions of higher learning. As a result of the mergers, a new type of comprehensive institution offering a broad spectrum of academic formative, as well as vocationally oriented programmes, has been established. This study focuses on the UJ, as an example of a merged institution, and will examine how teaching and learning has been effected by the changes at UJ. This research is informed by the notion that the interface between tutor and student is vital for students to attain literacy as well as academic language and skills proficiency in their chosen field. Thus, the research problem posed in this study is: What is the role of tutor development in an academic literacies module? Much of the literature on tutoring practice discusses the need to train tutors and offers various means through which this can be done. Using an Action Research design and a global analysis of the data collected, the findings of this study suggest that in addition to the appropriate, focused and rigorous training of tutors, they also need to be developed for effective tutoring to occur. Moreover, the sustained support and mentorship of both individual tutors and tutor groups allows for the maximum benefits of tutoring to be realized by all stakeholders.

Abstract:
M.Ed.
A personal tutoring established by the ancient universities and adopted subsequently by both old and new universities has implicitly acknowledged that High Education students derive both academic and personal benefits from one-on-one academic guidance and group collaborative work (Mattis & Dewart, 2007). In the Department of Mathematics, Science, Technology and Computer Education at the University of Johannesburg both the individual and group tutoring models are employed to assist students in their academic programmes. The research question that this study is addressing is: “What are the students’ expectations of the tutors in a postgraduate Computer- Based Education programme?” This research study describes a case study method based on the students’ expectations of the tutors in a post-graduate Computer-Based Education programme. For some reasons students have a misconception (about the roles of the tutors) that a tutoring session is a place where they will, with very little effort on their part, acquire and develop the computer skills needed for competency in the course. Either they view the tutor as an assistant lecturer, or someone who can give all the answers to their problems. The case is to elucidate the students’ perceptions and experiences towards the role of tutors in the Development of Web-Based Instruction in a Computer- Based Education course. Through qualitative data analysis the study revealed that the students in this study needed to know where to draw the line between the role of tutors and that of lecturers. The students acknowledged the kind of help that they received from the tutors during the tutoring sessions. Peer tutoring was portrayed by the students as having particular significance for them as they were faced with challenges of inadequate mastery of the necessary computer skills. It is also acknowledged that peer tutoring has the benefit to contribute to the improvement of their academic performance.

Low, Rhea V. "Clothing and post-Mao reforms : subtitle the tutoring role of Chinese fashion magazines, 1980-1986." Thesis, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/13040.

Abstract:
Beginning in 1978, the People's Republic of China embarked on new economic reforms that aimed to modernize the country. It wanted to convey that in sharp contrast to the radical, turbulent, ultra leftist days of the Cultural Revolution, the post-Mao period has been experiencing higher consumption levels, greater material progress, and modern living. An area that has been strongly influenced by this message about China's shift in policy and direction is clothing. As a case study, two state-run fashion magazines produced in China between the years 1980 to 1986 have been analyzed. This paper argues that the magazines Xiandai Fuzhuang and Shizhuang tutored people about sartorial fashion in a way that communicated the government's goal of distancing the prereform years from the post-Mao era. An underlying theme is the idea of China acting as a "pedagogical state" that provides proper guidance to its people in an effort to construct a more modern Chinese society. There are three main sections in this paper. The first part argues for a close relationship between fashion and the Chinese state. It considers the changes in consumption experienced by China before and after the reforms. It also discusses how aesthetics were ' perceived to shape an individual's moral refinement, and in turn, the improvement of society. Notably, these messages directly influenced the discourse of the state-run fashion magazines. The second section compares the contrasting attitudes toward clothing during and after the Cultural Revolution. Significant differences in perceptions of the body and gender were conveyed by the magazines' advice about dress. Through the perspectives of globalization theories, the third section explores the extent to which the magazines recommended their readers to adopt foreign clothing. Rather than demanding their readers to wear designated dress, such as Mao suits as in the previous era, they provided a range of advice: from embracing Western styles, maintaining pride in native Chinese clothing, developing a hybrid Sino-Western style.

Abstract:
The aim of the thesis is to describe reference of an elementary school to private tutoring in form of one - case study, concerning second grade of a factual elementary school taken as example, from the viewpoint of all the participants of the educational process. In the course of this work the school became participant of a programme of Ministry of education, youth and sports (MŠMT) - Patterns; that's why the work is enlargened by research of the way this programme has influenced the operation of school. Basic terms are defined, like private and school tutoring, types of its organisational forms, participants of tutoring; also methodology of the research is described. The research plan was set as one-phase research with mixed- method research design. Different forms of data collection were used: the quantitative questionnaires for pupils (n=247) and qualitative interviews with the school leadership, teachers and parents (n=13). There are both types of tutoring in function at the given elementary school, private and school ones, but not in a big scale. The school tolerates private tutoring but doesn't encourage it. Nevertheless the school offers school tutoring within the framework of the project Patterns, which provides adequate help to weak pupils, but its form doesn't satisfy school or children....

Robertson, Kandy S. "Technology and the role of peer tutors: How writing center tutors perceive the experience of online tutoring." 2005. https://scholarworks.umass.edu/dissertations/AAI3163699.

Full text
Abstract:
In the literature of writing centers, and in particular the literature around online peer tutoring, the voices of the tutors themselves are conspicuously silent. We read the perspectives of writing center administrators, but not those of the people actually providing the service. As administrators of writing centers, we are at a loss as we attempt to prepare our tutors for the online environment because there is little data that addresses the tutors' perceptions of what it is like to conduct a tutorial in a virtual environment. Thus, we are left with theory and practice that is little more than an adaptation of face-to-face tutoring pedagogy. This study began with the premise that the perceptions of peer tutors of their tutoring experiences, especially those experiences in the online tutoring environment, are a valuable resource. To tap this resource, this study asked tutors to reflect on their perceptions of the online tutoring environment, their perceptions of their own tutoring in the online tutoring environment, and their perceptions of any changes they felt necessary to accommodate the online tutoring environment. This was a situated exploratory study conducted at the Washington State University Vancouver Writing Center, which focused on 4 tutors at that site. It drew on Jim Bell's (2001) “reflection on practice” model in which peer tutors reflect on their face-to-face tutoring practices. The goal of this study was to address the gaps in the literature of tutor training through an understanding of the perceptions of these tutors as they negotiate tutoring online. Data for this study was collected over a period of two semesters. The researcher took the role of participant/observer/interviewer for these semesters. Interviews with tutors were audio taped, transcribed, and coded according to a scheme created from the transcripts. The significance of this study is the inclusion of the often silent voices of the tutors who perform online peer tutoring in the body of literature covering that task. It presents first-hand perceptions of online tutoring that can add to our understanding of the nature of online tutoring and, in turn, assist in the development of training programs for peer tutors.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the ways in which young children assist each other as meaning makers in relation to written language as they interact in classroom writing sessions. It examines the nature of peer assistance in young children's self-selected writing tasks, and the role of social interaction in literacy knowledge construction. It documents the patterns of interaction evident among a group of Year 1 students, and describes differences in the teacher's and students' perceptions of peer assistance in the classroom. Based on extensive observations in a Year 1 classroom, the study explores the potential of peer interactions to contribute to the literacy learning of individuals, and the construction of literacy within the group.

Abstract:
abstract: Observational tutoring has been found to be an effective method for teaching a variety of subjects by reusing dialogue from previous successful tutoring sessions. While it has been shown content can be learned through observational tutoring it has yet to been examined if a secondary behavior such as goal-setting can be influenced. The present study investigated if observing virtual humans engaging in a tutoring session on rotational kinematics with embedded positive goal oriented dialogue would increase knowledge of the material and perpetuate a shift an observer's goal-orientation from performance avoidance goal orientation (PAVGO) to learning goal orientation (LGO). Learning gains were observed in pre to post test knowledge retention tests. Significant changes from pretest to posttest occurred across conditions for LGO. Additionally, significant changes from PAVGO pretest to posttest were observed in the control condition however PAVGO did not significantly change in the experimental condition.

Robinson, Julia Margaret. "The role of journal writing in initiating reflection on practice of tutors in a college learning centre." Thesis, 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/3776.

Full text
Abstract:
A discrepancy appears to exist between the value placed on reflective journal writing by the writers of journals and the value seen by educators of that same journal writing. In this study, I explored the journal writing of six tutors working in a learning centre at a two-year community college in western Canada. I examined: (1) tutors' perspectives on the journal writing task; (2) the content and reflectivity of tutors' journals; and, (3) the accuracy of the journals in representing tutor thinking initiated by the journal writing task. The initial data collection for the study included observation of weekly in-service training sessions and examination of tutor journal entries. Tutors were interviewed about their perceptions of journal writing and their thinking around issues they wrote about in their journals. The tutor trainer was interviewed about his expectations of tutor journal writing, his reactions to tutors' journals and his perceptions of the journal writing task. After the initial data collection, the participants were given summaries of data collected in the initial phase. Tutors read the summaries and as a group discussed issues raised by the data. I interviewed the trainer about insights he had gained from the summaries. Content choices and levels of reflectivity in the tutors' journals varied widely. Factors affecting the content and levels of reflection in the tutors' journals were affected by tutors’ understanding of the journal writing task, their motivation for journal writing, their feelings of vunerability, their personal histories, their tutoring experience, their preference for writing as a mode of learning, and their purposes for writing journals. Most tutors perceived their journals as useful to them, but the tutor trainer regarded the journals as less useful. This difference in perception of the benefits of journal writing can be attributed, at least in part, to the differing levels of access of the trainer and the tutors to the benefits of journal writing. The trainer based his understanding of the benefits of journal writing on the journals themselves whereas the tutors were aware of benefits that were not apparent from studying the journals. Interviews with the tutors showed that tutors reflected more as a result of the journal writing task than was evident from their journals. The trainer’s view of the reflection initiated by the journal writing task was obscured in tutors’ journals due to the fact, that tutors reported prior reflection, provided incomplete representation of their reflective thinking, made rhetorical choices which masked their levels of reflection, and continued to reflect after completion of journal entries. Implications of the study for educators include the importance of a process approach to journal writing, the risks of assuming that journals provide an accurate picture of the reflection the task initiates, and factors for consideration in the construction of the prompt for journal writing. Implications for researchers focus on the risks of assuming that journals provide an accurate measure of the benefits of the journal writing task. Collaboration with journal writers is seen as essential for any such measure to be achieved.

Crous, Charleen. "Using role reversal in the treatment of learners with performance anxiety in the school environment." Diss., 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/14131.

Full text
Abstract:
In this study the technique of role reversal for the treatment of performance anxiety, experienced by learners in the school environment, was investigated. Performance anxiety sometimes presents as part of a larger pattern of social phobia and negatively impacts on an individual’s tasks performance due to the fear of negative evaluation. My qualitative study involved a collective, instrumental case study. Role reversal was implemented as part of a group-therapeutic intervention which continued for approximately three months, and involved participants acting as peer tutors. Data analysis focused on the participant’s personal experiences of the technique as well as therapeutic gains and the usefulness of the technique from a school-based counsellor’s perspective. The research findings revealed that although the helping role held certain challenges for the participants, it seemed to generally impact positively on their social and academic confidence and functioning. Additionally their levels of performance anxiety appeared to decrease.

Abstract:
The diploma thesis deals with problems of depression in older people. Mainly the work is focused on identifying and analyzing the role of nurses in screening for depression in older people in primary care, acute care, long-term care and home care. This thesis was focused on theoretical direction and was used the method of design and demonstration. In this thesis was set one main goals with five research questions. The main goal was to identify and analyze the role of nurses in screening for depression in the elderly. RQ 1: What is the role of the nurse in screening for depression in the elderly? RQ 2: What is the role of the nurse in the primary care in screening for depression in the elderly? RQ 3: What is the role of the nurse in screening for depression in hospitalized patients in acute care? RQ 4: What is the role of the nurse in screening for depression in seniors in long-term and home care? RQ 5: What rating scales and methods are used in screening for depression in the elderly? The thesis introduce the concept of depression. The following are specified the causes of and the important factors that affect depression in the elderly. It also deals the differences in the clinical symptomatology of depression in old age. It explains possibilities and various barriers in the diagnosis of depression. Another chapter introduces complete geriatric examination, diagnostic classification systems, possible screening methods and scales for detection of depression in the elderly population. It also deals methods of pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment and its possible complications associated with older age. By reason of increased suicide rate caused by depressive disorder the issue of suicidal behavior in the elderly is introduced. The next chapter deals with the nursing process, which is used by nurses in practice. It consists of the evaluation of the patient's health condition, making nursing diagnosis, creating nursing plan and subsequent implementation and evaluation. The nursing process is also needy for providing quality care. The nursing process in the stage of nursing diagnosis, introduces possible nursing diagnosis for a patient suffering from depression, which are based on the latest classification. Finally is described the role of nurses in screening for depression in the elderly in different health facilities and their contribution to the timely evaluation of depression in the elderly. This chapter introduces the role of nurses, nursing screening and collaboration with a physician. The role of nurses in screening for depression in different medical facilities is based on the first phase of the nursing process of assessment. On the basis of objective and subjective information, the nurse will assess the overall health and mental condition of the patient. Primarily, it was investigated what is the role of the nurse in screening for depression. On the basis of content analysis and synthesis it was necessary to used and processed domestic and foreign literature. A number of relevant sources are the results of various studies and Meta-analyzes, mostly from abroad, but also from the Czech Republic. The thesis can serve as a basis for nurses. The result of this thesis is to create e-learning material available for students in the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences of South Bohemia in Ceske Budejovice in the tutorial called Moodle.
