Dawson, Ross Hughan. "Kite Turning." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Mechanical Engineering, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/5475.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates the mechanisms behind the control of a typical two line kite, where the lines are attached to the kite side by side. This arrangement gives the kite flyer the ability to apply a roll angle to the kite, which then results in a yawing motion. The reason for this yaw rotation has not been adequately described previously. The definitions of roll and yaw for a kite have been re-defined to match the real world behaviour of the kite-bridle-line system. Specifically, these are defined as rotations relative to the lines rather than the kite itself. This detail has been neglected in previous research, and has a significant effect on the turning behaviour of a kite. A static model of a kite represented by flat disks was created. This model allows the out of balance forces and moments to be found for a kite when it is held at any position. When the kite is held with a roll angle applied, the disk angles of attack become unequal. This causes a change in the magnitude, direction, and point of action of the aerodynamic forces on each disk, which can lead to a yaw moment. While this does not give a complete picture of how a kite turns, it does explain one of the two mechanisms that cause a kite to begin to yaw when a roll angle is applied. The other mechanism is due to the velocity of the roll rotation, and is out of the scope of this thesis since a dynamic analysis would be required. The static model showed that any variation to kite geometry or any parameter that affects the equilibrium position of the kite will affect turning response. The most important of these parameters for a simple kite represented by two disks is the dihedral angle. A minimum negative dihedral angle (or anhedral) is required for a kite to turn in the expected direction when a roll angle is applied. The value of the minimum anhedral angle required for this behaviour varies with other parameters, but is generally between 8° and 20°. Other parameters such as bridle geometry also affect the turning response of a kite, primarily because they alter the equilibrium positions of the kite and line. Altering these equilibrium positions has a strong effect on turning response, since it changes the initial disk angles of attack. Additionally, if the kite and line are not aligned perpendicular to each other (which is a rare condition for a kite) a roll angle further changes the disk angles of attack, since the roll angle is applied about an axis relative to the line rather than the kite. An investigation into the effect of varying wind velocity on turning response showed that it has an important effect. Some kites will reverse their response to a given roll angle at some wind velocities, which could make the kite very difficult to control. Additionally, some kites can alter their equilibrium positions sharply with wind velocity, again causing varying turning behaviour as the wind conditions change. Future work should examine the dynamic turning response of kites. A dynamic simulation could be used to examine how the turning response of a kite is influenced by the rate at which a control input is applied. Additionally, the behaviour of the kite once the initial turning movement has begun could be assessed.

The following gaps in critical goals are derived through a direct comparison of the Needs to Goals transformation versus the current waste heat recovery solutions and their stated goals. 1. Critical: Implementation of a sustainable financial plan which can help to initiate an increase in waste heat recovery 2. Critical: Deployment of waste heat recovery strategies for reducing greenhouse emissions A proposed solution to achieve these two goals would be: 1. Purchasing waste heat from industries. 2. Storing this energy with our proprietary thermal storage materials. 3. Selling the stored energy at either industrial sites or to pricier markets. New thermal-storage materials and a mini-sized combined heat and power (CHP) system have been further developed. This system will be the first to involve the arbitrage of waste heat energy by using cheap thermal storage material (made with zero greenhouse emissions) and a mini generator. This system could play an important role in providing economic incentives for industries that wish to recover waste heat.

Abstract:
In this thesis we examine methods for evaluating a traffic alarm system. Nuisance alarms can quickly increase the volume of alarms experienced by the alarm operator and obstruct their work. We propose two methods for removing a number of these nuisance alarms, so that events of higher priority can be targeted. A parallel correlation analysis demonstrated significant correlation between single and clusters of alarms, presenting a strong cause for causality. While a serial correlation was performed, it could not conclude evidence of consequential alarms. In order to assist Trafikverket with maintenance scheduling, a long short-term model (LSTM) model, to predict univariate time-series of discretely binned alarm sequences. Experiments conclude that the LSTM model provides higher precision for alarm sequences with higher repeatability and recurring patterns. For other, randomly occurring alarms, the model performs unsatisfactory.

Abstract:
The machine tool industry is highly dependent on the tooling which is needed to machine the components used to make the range of products seen in today's society. The range of tooling available to machinists is prolific and subject to continual growth. Those engineers faced with the task of process planning require advanced systems to support the decisions that need to be made for the production process to operate smoothly. The tooling data made available by these systems is a key factor in defining the efficiency with which the production processes can be carried out. This research examines the technical decision support systems made available to industrialists and highlights the scope to provide tooling engineers with up-to-date tooling performance and use data that can be used both in the planning stages as well as dealing with problems encountered during production. Specifically, this research identifies the role performed by widespread tool trials, associated with new tools or new materials, and goes on to show how the information obtained from tool trials can be collated in a structured manner and used to enhance the provision of data with which to carry out the process planning task. The goal of this research was to develop and implement a framework capable of collecting and disseminating data related to tool trials in a coherent and supportive fashion using distributed methods. This target resulted in the deployment of a system named JadeT, which is capable of receiving and analysing data from tool trials and subsequently enhancing the process planning task by basing cutting parameter selection on a combination of fundamental cutting parameter algorithms in parallel with using the approved data generated from tool trials. The JadeT system was tested via the creation of a database using actual tool trial reports, and the manner in which this data was used to provide cutting parameters was analysed. The JadeT system has been developed, deployed and evaluated. The opportunity to use data contained within tool trial reports to support process planning tasks has been identified and exploited. The testing of JadeT indicates that the system fulfils the initial goals and was able to provide suggestions for further research in this area.

Abstract:
Manufacturing operations generate revenue by adding value to material through machine work and the cost associated with part production hinders the maximum profit available. In order to remain competitive, companies invest in research to maximize profit and reduce waste of manufacturing operations. This results in cheaper products for the customer without sacrificing quality. The purpose of this research was to identify machine settings of an Okuma LC 40 Turning Center and optimize the cost of machining in terms of tool cost and energy consumption while maintaining part quality at a productive cycle time. Studying the relationship between energy consumption, tool life, and cycle time with the speed and feed settings through statistical Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) method will allow the production plant to make profitable financial decisions concerning simultaneous turning operation of forged chrome-alloy steel. The project was divided into three phases; the first phase began with a literature survey of sensors used in current manufacturing research and the adaptation of our sensors to the Okuma LC 40 turning center. Then, phase II used design of experiments to identify spindle speed and feedrate settings that optimize multiple responses related to the turning process. The result was a saving in energy consumption (kWh) by 11.8%, a saving in cutting time by 13.2% for a total cost reduction from $1.15 per tool pass to $1.075 per tool pass. Furthermore, this work provides the foundation for phase III to develop an intelligent monitoring system to provide real-time information about the state of the machine and tool. For a monitoring system to be implemented in production, it should utilize cost effective sensors and be nonintrusive to the cutting operation.

Abstract:
Popular culture representations of in-law relationships are frequently negative, and research has affirmed the communication difficulties associated with these non-kin, nonvoluntary relationships. Mother-in-law/daughter-in-law (MIL/DIL) relationships face unique challenges, as these women compete for the position of “kinkeeper,” or the person who manages relationships throughout the family. When MIL/DIL relationships are characterized by conflict and negative feelings toward one another, the family system suffers. To better understand the implications of “high conflict” MIL/DIL relationships on entire families, 27 DILs were interviewed about the turning points they had experienced with their MILs and the repercussions of the MIL/DIL relationship throughout the family system. Nine turning point categories emerged inductively from the data, along with several consequences for relationships throughout the family system, including DIL/husband, MIL/grandchildren, and husband/mother. Findings indicate high conflict MIL/DIL relationships do not just lead to negative outcomes for the two women involved, but also for other members across the family system.

Abstract:
The precision of machining systems is ever increasing in order to keep up with components’ accuracy requirements. At the same time product variants areincreasing and order quantities are decreasing, which introduces high demands on the capability of machining systems. The machining system is an interaction between the machine tool structure, the process and the control system and is defined in terms of capability by the positional, static, dynamic and thermal accuracy. So far, the control of the machining system, in terms of static and dynamic stability is process based which is often translated into sub-optimum process parameters and therefore low productivity. This thesis proposes a new approach for control of the machining systemwhich is based on the capability to control the structural properties of themachine tool and as a result, controlling the outcome of the machining process. The control of the structural properties is realized by carefully designed Joint Interface Modules (JIMS). These modules allow for control of the stiffness and damping of the structure, as a result of tuning the contact conditions on the interface of the JIM; this is performed by control of the pre-load on the interface,by treatment of the interface with damping enhancing materials, or both. The thesis consists of a presentation of the motivation behind this work, the theoretical basis on which the proposed concept is based and a part describing the experimental investigations carried out. Two prototype JIMs, one for a milling process and one for a turning process were used in the experimental investigations that constitute the case studies for examining the validity of the proposed concept and demonstrating its applicability in a real production environment.

Mognol, Pascal. "Contribution à la génération automatique de gammes en tournage : génération dirigée par évaluation progressive." Cachan, Ecole normale supérieure, 1994. http://www.theses.fr/1994DENS0019.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract:
High energy price and the increasing requirements of quality and low cost of products have created an urgent need to implement new technologies in current automated manufacturing environments. Condition monitoring systems of manufacturing processes have been recognised in recent years as one of the essential technologies that provide the competitive advantage in many manufacturing environments. This research aims to develop an effective sensor fusion model for turning processes for the detection of tool wear. Multi-sensors combined with a novelty detection algorithm and Learning Vector Quantisation (LVQ) neural networks are used in this research to detect tool wear and provide diagnostic and prognostic information. A novel approach, termed ASPST, (Automated Sensor and Signal Processing Selection System for Turning) is used to select the most appropriate sensors and signal processing methods. The aim is to reduce the number of sensors needed in the overall system and reduce the cost. The ASPST approach is based on simplifying complex sensory signals into a group of Sensory Characteristic Features (SCFs) and evaluating the sensitivity of these SCFs in detecting tool wear. A wide range of sensory signals (cutting forces, strain, acceleration, acoustic emission and sound) and signal processing methods are also implemented to verify the capability of the approach. A cost reduction method is also implemented based on eliminating the least utilised sensor in an attempt to reduce the overall cost of the system without sacrificing the capability of the condition monitoring system. The experimental results prove that the suggested approach provides a responsive and effective solution in monitoring tool wear in turning with reduced time and cost.

Abstract:

This thesis asks one basic question: how do "vertical" disease- or intervention-focused global health programs impact the underlying health systems of the nations they serve? Vertical programs-health aid focused on a particular disease, such as HIV, or type of intervention, such as immunization-receive the lion's share of global health aid dollars, and yet we know uncomfortably little about their long-run impact on broader health systems. Many speculate that vertical aid undermines health worker effectiveness, distorts national policies, and disrupts the supply chain for drugs and medical products. Unfortunately, a lack of hard data makes quantitative analysis extremely difficult. Using the tools of system dynamics, this thesis consolidates the collective wisdom of previously published investigations and anecdotal observations to reveal the field's prevailing "mental model" of the dynamic in question. The result is a set of diagrams that describe the known impacts of vertical programs on health systems, and also reveal dynamic effects not yet explicitly identified in the literature. These effects fall into four sub-systems of impact: care delivery specialization and fragmentation, care delivery development and mediocritization, health policy development and mismatch, and market development and distortion. These models are then used to better understand the effects of recent contextual developments-the HIV/AIDS epidemic and the emergence of large Global Health Initiatives.
(cont.) Through expert interviews, this thesis identifies the most pressing system stresses in this contemporary context: the commitment to chronic care delivery which HIV/AIDS intervention creates, and the critical need for harmonization between donors which this commitment reveals. Using case examples from Kenya, these dynamics are shown to be active today, and to have instigated mitigation strategies by practitioners in the field. Finally, the systems identified above bring into focus key leverage points, including donor coordination, health worker augmentation, and engagement of local markets, which can "tip" the impact of vertical programs from harming health systems to strengthening them. In doing so, this thesis provides guidance to policymakers and program implementers who seek to use their resources to strengthen systems and eventually obviate health aid entirely.

Abstract:
The aim of this dissertation is to systematically develop a continuative concept of driver-automobile cooperation, to evaluate its suitability on the basis of empirical data, and to value its provable potential in relation to existing approaches.Assumptions and premises regarding the human-machine interaction constitute the starting point of this work. The decisive altercation and notional differentiation of cooperation are explained in just this context, leading logically to a definitional demarcation of existing approaches, the demand of a specific role understanding of the interaction as well as the derivation of conceptual basic conditions. The structural and procedural characteristics of this specific interaction are then elaborated upon and used to identify the general attributes of cooperation between driver and automobile. In the following, such indicators are derived by which the implied profit as a result of cooperation between driver and automobile can be controlled and valued. Within the framework of several preliminary investigations, those driving situations were identified that would profit most from a cooperative interaction between driver and automobile. As a result, the two driving scenarios "Overtaking on Highways" and "Turning Left on Urban and Country Roads with Oncoming Traffic" were utilized in the experiments. Both single scenarios have been compared in independent experiments with regard to alternative system variants. The prove of specific hypotheses was embedded in the prototypical surroundings of a driving simulator. Finally, the possibility of establishing and embedding this interaction concept into the overall socio-technical context will be presented, and future perspectives will be discussed.

Abstract:
In this thesis, we are interested in the local analysis of singularly-perturbed linear differential systems and completely integrable Pfaffian systems in several variables. Such systems have a vast literature and arise profoundly in applications. However, their symbolic resolution is still open to investigation. Our approaches rely on the state of art of formal reduction of singular linear systems of ordinary differential equations (ODS) over univariate fields. In the case of singularly-perturbed linear differential systems, the complications arise mainly from the phenomenon of turning points. We extend notions introduced for the treatment of ODS to such systems and generalize corresponding algorithms to construct formal solutions in a neighborhood of a singularity. The underlying components of the formal reduction proposed are stand-alone algorithms as well and serve different purposes (e.g. rank reduction, classification of singularities, computing restraining index). In the case of Pfaffian systems, the complications arise from the interdependence of the multiple components which constitute the former and the multivariate nature of the field within which reduction occurs. However, we show that the formal invariants of such systems can be retrieved from an associated ODS, which limits computations to univariate fields. Furthermore, we complement our work with a rank reduction algorithm and discuss the obstacles encountered. The techniques developed herein paves the way for further generalizations of algorithms available for univariate differential systems to bivariate and multivariate ones, for different types of systems of functional equations

Abstract:
The goal of machining industry is to produce the first part correctly and most optimally without resorting costly trials on the shop floor. This thesis presents a Virtual Turning system which predicts the physics of machining rotational parts before actual production on the shop floor. As opposed to measurement of physical dimensions, cutting forces, torque, and power, they are predicted in virtual environment by integrating the laws of metal cutting process and the geometric and solid modeling of the tool-workpiece engagements along the tool path. The proposed Virtual Turning has two fundamental modules. The first module identifies the tool-workpiece engagement geometry along the path, which is used by the second, cutting process simulation engine. The initial workpiece geometry and tool path (Cutter Location) are imported from commercial CAD/CAM systems using industry standard IGES or STEP NC graphics formats. The tool-workpiece intersections along the tool path are identified by applying Boolean intersections of the two parts represented by their Boundaries. In order to expedite the time consuming computations, the in-process machining features along the path are classified, engagement conditions are parametrically modeled, and recalled instead of using Boolean operations recurrently along the tool path. The proposed hybrid model which consist of tool-workpiece engagements modeled by features or solid to solid intersections, can handle turning of a verity of two dimensional, symmetric rotational parts.

The intelligent precision turning system was developed in this research for the cutting force of the tool between the variation of feed rate and the spindle speed. The tool always wears, so the life of tool is shortened and the roughness of the surface is decreased because of the high speed cutting for generating a greater cutting force. If the cutting force is lower, the working time would become longer when the workpiece was manufactured in the turning system. In order to extend the life of tools and to consider the efficiency of working, while the cutting process was changed by regulating the feed rate which employed the servomotor driven in the turning system for generating the constant cutting force. The mathematical model of the cutting force in the precision turning system was derived. The PID controller, fuzzy controller and SOFC (self-organization fuzzy controller) were employed to control the feed rate in the system, respectively. The optimal cutting parameters were investigated and the different controllers' were also performed to study control performances from the individually experimental result.

The purpose of this research is to establish a useful model of tire''s cornering force of the motorcycle for the design of anti-skid braking control. The model takes into account the dynamics of the motorcycle, the dynamics of the wheel, the dynamics of the hydraulic control system, and the dynamics of the brake mechanism. A fuzzy controller, to control the slip ratio at a desired value 0.2 and to maintain maneuvering capability, is designed to inspect the validation of the model via simulation. Motorcycle''s cornering force value delivered from dynamic is comparative with tire''s cornering force value delivered from tire''s slip angle. It can decide that anti-skid braking system for motorcycle''s turning is good or not.

Computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) has replaced the handwritten NC code gradually. The CAM software calculates to produce tool paths, and directly simulates on the computer. This software helps to manufacture complicated yet precise components. When an engineer operates the CAM system depending on his experience and subjective ideas to decide the cutting strategy, this situation could reflect some difficulties in standardization and management of manufacturing companies. In addition, manually designed operation steps maybe too complicated, leads to reduce the efficiency of tool path planning. Therefore, this study not only researched on how to simplify the operation steps and procedures but also reduced the operational threshold. This thesis uses Siemens NX with Visual Studio C# to configure the secondary development environment. This study also adopts the API library provided by Siemens NX to import NXOpen function language into Visual Studio C# for program edition. For the development of a CAM-integrated turning system, this includes some common machine operations, such as the rough turning of the object’s surface, outer- and inner diameter, the finish turning of outer- and inner diameter, and the grooving of the inner diameter of an object. This integrated system is triggered by a custom menu in NX. The dialog interface of the system is designed to be multi-paged with streamlined content. All operations and parameter settings are integrated in the main interface. The path data generated by NX are exported into NC code with a novel lathe post-processor, which established in this study. Then, this NC code is imported into Vericut software for cutting simulation. Ultimately, the parts are practically cut using a CNC lathe machine. The actual cutting results verify that the tool paths generated in this system is feasible and reasonable. This study simplified the CAM turning process by parameterize the input of operations and standardize the processing strategy, thus increased the efficiency of tool path planning, and reduced human errors and operational thresholds.

Traditional headlight system mostly rely on fixed light system to provide low beam, high beam, and fog light to illuminate front road. It doesn’t allow cars to project headlight onto road accurately when making turns or cruising up or down hills. In addition, drivers might forget to turn on the headlight when cruising through tunnels or driving on a dark raining day, or forget to switch from high beam to normal beam when pass an incoming car. these situation would all affect drivers’ safety. Many car headlight manufacturers are aggressively developing new generation of automobile headlights, which are known as AFS(Advanced Frontlight System), to improve the traditional headlight systems. To in crease the safeness of driving at night time, this research proposes a way to solve the problems mentioned above. This research discusses the conditions such as headlight turning on and off analysis of headlight angle and its control. Generally, when cars are accelerating or slowing down, the car movement will often affect the direction illumination, and then cause a great impact on driver’s view. To solve this problem, we use axis displacements to identify the angle between car body and the ground, and use this angle to calculate deviation of headlight angle. When cars are accelerating, we adjust the direction of headlight according to car speed and safe breaking distance. When cars cruise on hills, we recognize the current situation of the car by using sensors installed on both front and rear bumpers of the cars. When cars are coming into a turn, the relations among angles of front tire, car speed, and radius of turning are calculated based on cornering equations. then use radius of turning to calculate which direction headlight should be projecting. Then the direction which headlight should be projected is then calculated from turning radius.
