Abstract:
Not being a string player himself, Mark-Anthony Turnage approached his first concerto for a string instrument with some trepidation. It turns out that while the writing for the viola is idiomatic enough, Turnage has something of a love/hate relationship with traditional ideas about the concerto. Divided into two movements – Turnage admitted that in the unlikely event of his writing a symphony it would have three, five or six movements, never four – the new concerto (completed in 2001 and here given its UK première) has the expected cadenza but one that appears only 36 bars in! Such challenging attitudes to an old form characterize the new piece, subtitled On Opened Ground. Even so the work's structure – scherzando opening with slower coda, slow second movement and brisk chaconne finale – bring us back to the more usual reference points for a concerto. While he acknowledges the surprising influence of Walton ‘in the second movement’, the influence of that composer's own viola concerto is actually more pervasive than Turnage would have us believe. Even the title, while apparently making reference to Seamus Heaney's collection Opened Ground, seems to point more fruitfully to the ground bass of the second movement's chaconne. One thing is certainly as described: On Opened Ground is, as he claims, one of Turnage's most lyrical pieces and might win him an audience for whom the earlier astrigencies were too great.

Abstract:
In fulfillment of a commission from the BBC for a work in commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the BBC Symphony Chorus, Mark-Anthony Turnage produced Calmo, an untypically quiet and gentle work for chorus with handbells – and, what has become something of a signature instrument for him, desk bells. The text of the work consists of the words ‘Dona nobis pacem’ and their translations in several languages. It is dedicated to the memory of Turnage's friend Sue Knussen. Calmo's intense eloquence was enhanced by its brevity, and, both despite and because of it, stood out in a program of music for chorus, harp, and organ by an assortment of older and newer Czech and British Composers, including Janáček, MacMillan, Holst, and Eben, presented by the BBC Symphony Chorus, conducted by Stephen Jackson.

This year's BBC weekend at the Barbican dedicated to a single composer was given over to Mark-Anthony Turnage. Even Turnage himself expressed doubts initially about whether his music was diverse enough to withstand such exposure. His worries were unfounded, as the chance to explore his recent output, in particular, revealed a composer who is constantly growing in stature and breaking out in new and fruitful directions.

Abstract:
In a baffling case of unhelpful scheduling, major new works by Mark-Anthony Turnage were showcased by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and the London Symphony Orchestra in concerts held at the Philharmonic Hall, Liverpool and London's Barbican, respectively, on the same evening – 7 February 2013. Apart from necessitating an explanation for the composer's absence from the RLPO concert in their season's programme book, this double booking resulted in audiences being unable to experience live performances of two of Turnage's most substantial recent orchestral pieces. Surely one of these significant premières could have been rescheduled to another date – or, if not, a different time of day, creating a sporting chance to experience both events? Fortunately, the LSO concert was broadcast, enabling those of us who chose to attend the Liverpool concert to catch the London première retrospectively.

Estimations support hypothesis that players are risk-averze and loss-averze. In bigger tournaments are bigger prizepools and that is the reason, why players in bigger tournament make deals more often. Abstract:
The implementation of Wavelength Division Multiplexing system (WDM) optical fibre transmission systems has the potential to realise this high capacity data rate exceeding 10 Tb/s. The ability to reconfigure optical networks is a desirable attribute for future metro applications where light paths can be set up or taken down dynamically as required in the network. The use of microelectronics in conjunction with photonics enables intelligence to be added to the high-speed capability of photonics, thus realising reconfigurable optical devices which can revolutionise optical telecommunications and many more application areas. In this thesis, we investigate and demonstrate the capability of Opto-VLSI processors to realise a reconfigurable WDM optical device of many functions, namely, optical multiband filtering, optical notch filtering, and reconfigurable-Optical-Add-Drop Multiplexing (ROADM). We review the potential technologies available for tunable WDM components, and discuss their advantages and disadvantages. We also develop a simple yet effective algorithm that optimises the performance of Opto-VLSI processors, and demonstrate experimentally the multi-function WDM devices employing Opto-VLSI processors. Finally, the feasibility of Opto-VLSI-based WDM devices in meeting the stringent requirements of the optical communications industry is discussed.

Full text
Abstract:
Through various primary and secondary research methods, a University of Arizona technology from the Optics Department was analyzed in terms of new venture viability and sustainability in Southern Arizona. Tunable Fourier Transform Spectropolarimeter (TFTS) has applications in military, biology and astronomy by using polarization to distinguish different objects such as cancer cells. The technology measures details of how an object within an image can change the polarization of light compared to how other object in that same image changes the polarization. Innovative aspects of the technology include tenability, achromaticity and the bandwidth size. The technology however only worked in a laboratory setting and further development was ceased due to lack of funding and interest from outside investor groups. Primary data sources included the inventor (Dr. Dereniak), the lead optics licensor (Amy Phillips), cancer center employees (Dr. Bartels, Mr. Yozwiak), and patent application. Secondary sources included, but not limited to, informational databases, medical journals, optical journals, office of technology transfer, and small business innovation research. Based on information gathered and consulting work, two recommendations were presented to increase the likelihood of the University benefiting from innovation: *Addition of an Innovation Fund to yearly Tucson conference called Idea Funding. Innovation Fund is a $50,000 prize for the most promising technology based on detailed criteria. Along with the prize, remaining competitors would receive needed exposure to increase funding possibility. *Creation of a research funding position at the Office of Technology Transfer. It would be the duty of this employee to research and aid in the grant application process for all of the technologies at the OTT.

Abstract:
This chapter describes British composer Mark-Anthony Turnage’s Three Songs (2000). This assured, agreeably compact cycle should prove a boon to baritones seeking a winning concert item by an established British composer. Phrase lengths are judged perfectly and the range and timbres of the baritone voice are heard with unfailing accuracy. Word-setting is impeccable and plentiful dynamics and nuances help to guide the interpretation. The first two poems celebrate cats (‘The Singing Cat’ and ‘Mourned’—a eulogy for a departed pet); and the last song reflects on the merits of animals in general (‘Last Words’). The score is presented with exemplary clarity, so that performers can assimilate it quickly. The ‘friendly postmodern’ idiom should not prove a barrier—piano parts are light and spare, so useful pitch-cues can be easily heard. The singer will need to be conscientious about tuning intervals. As the piece progresses, there are some wide leaps, but these are vocally gratifying. Although the work is not particularly taxing, it needs a crisp, neat delivery and a secure high range, as well as a lively presence and an instinct for characterization.

Abstract:
With the increase in computer-controlled hybrid machining (e.g. mill-turn machines), one needs to discern what features of a part are created during turning (i.e. with a lathe cutter) versus those created by milling. Given a generic part shape, it is desirable to extract the turnable and non-turnable features in order to obtain feasible machining plans. A novel approach for automating this division and for defining the resulting turning operations in a hybrid process is proposed in this paper. The algorithm is based on identifying the dominant rotational-axis and performing several non-uniform lateral cross-sections to quickly generate the “as lathed” model. The part is then subtracted from the original model to isolate the non-turnable features. Next, resulting model and features are translated to a label rich graph and fed into a grammar reasoning tool to produce feasible manufacturing plans. The setup design is also studied against the tolerances specified by the designer. Performance of the algorithm has been tested on several examples ranging from simple to complex parts.

Rotating unions for high oil pressure (30 MPa) are common in technique. For example they can be found in excavators between the turnable upper part and the stationary lower part or in the indexing tables of tool machines. These seals often cause problems. Due to the high oil pressure, their friction torque can rise up to one hundred Nm and the seals fail during operation. But with known failure pattern the user is able to judge and improve the seal and the surrounding construction. This paper summarizes the failure causes that were observed during experiments at the Institute of Machine Components over the last years.

Abstract:
A Small-Scale Solution for a Big Energy Problem: Renewable Distributed Energy. Locally generated biomass, industrial and municipal wastes, coal and plastics have a significant part to play in providing a source of reliable and economic energy in the US. The ability to use these materials reliably and cleanly can be addressed with small-scale gasification technology to provide distributed generation. A technology that has improved on the historical success of gasification to provide these elements is TURNW2E™ Gasification. This technology is specifically designed to convert locally available energy resources into a clean fuel gas which is then subsequently used for heat and or power generation. This technology has the ability to operate cleanly and interchangeably using waste materials and /or coal. With the ability to produce power economically from 100 kW to 5 MW it can provide distributed generation at institutions, DOD facilities, and industrial complexes. This creates a reliable and economical energy source for the user, while disposing of wastes in an environmentally sound manner. This replaces landfill use with the energy transformation process of gasification, which provides enormous environmental benefits, including the elimination of carcinogens and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions caused by incineration processes. The use of renewable biomass and wastes provides a sustainable source of electricity that is unrestricted by grid access, providing tremendous potential to reduce US fuel imports. Using this approach, the user can create jobs and power in a sustainable scenario; without sending precious energy dollars overseas, using this process in a distributed manner will help strengthen our nation’s economy, and provide improvements to the quality of life wherever it is installed. By having the ability to use many different feedstocks, the technology can enable the avoidance of landfilling MSW and industrial wastes, including tires; it can use waste wood such as railroad ties, beetle-infested pine, and forestry wastes, farm wastes and natural disaster debris to generate renewable energy for local use or sale to the grid. Materials for processing are varied, and thus, the technology flexibility enables small-scale use in a wide range of installations, a landfill site, transfer station, farm, hospital, manufacturing facility, resort, DOD base, island community, university, and local municipal site. TURNW2E™ Gasification is available at commercial scale and is currently installed at two facilities overseas, with three US facilities planned for ’09. A training and continuing education /R&D facility is underway in the US.
