ACE, APO, A25, B65, D1, FXIIIB, HS4.32, HS4.69, PV92 and TPA25 were analyzed in approximately 100 unrelated individuals from Anatolia. Alu insertion polymorphisms offer several advantages over other nuclear DNA polymorphisms for human evolution studies. The frequencies of the ten biallelic Alu insertions in Anatolians were calculated and all systems were found to be in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (p>
0.05). By combining the results of this study with results of previous studies done on worldwide populations, the genetic distance (Nei&rsquo
s DA) between each pair of populations was calculated and neighbor joining trees were constructed. In general, geographically closer populations were found to be also genetically similar. Principal component analysis (PCA) was performed and Anatolia was found to be in the European cluster. As a result of PCA
it was concluded that FXIIIB, PV92 and ACE were the variables contributing the most to the explanation of the variation between the populations. Additionally
canonical variates analysis (CVA) concluded that the most discriminative markers for the groups of populations were PV92, D1, ACE and HS4.32. Pair-wise Fst values were also calculated between Anatolians and some of the populations for which the data was available. It was concluded that, Anatolians have non-significant pair-wise Fst values with Swiss and French Acadian populations. Lastly, heterozygosity vs. distance from centroid graph was constructed and it was found that Anatolians and India-Hindu had exactly the expected heterozygosity value predicted by the model of Harpending and Ward (1982).

Full textChapter I discusses concepts of ethnicity, culture and identity and presents a critical account of the literature on German Turks in this respect. Chapter II focuses on the ambiguities and insecurities of German Turks' legal, political and social status in both Turkey and Germany, and traces the consequences of these conditions on Turkish migrants' complex sense of place. The discussion of German Turks' "myths of return" in the context of their liminality and the impact these have on their self-image and their visions about their lives constitute the focus of chapters III and IV respectively. Chapter V explores the changing nature of Turkish migrants' interpersonal relationships. Chapter VI concentrates on the anomalies of the social space occupied by German Turks in German society and discusses their life-styles, practices and emergent cultural forms in the context of social mobility.

Turks distinction in terms of the civilising process which operates on the differentiation between &ldquo
civilised&rdquo
and &ldquo

bodies and corresponds to the formation of the high/low hierarchy in Turkey in the 1990s. The particular construction of civilised bodies is delineated with respect to the continuity and discontinuity of the Ottoman modernisation and the Kemalist project of Westernisation. The social, political and ideological context of &ldquo
White&rdquo
Turks is examined in detail by a textual analysis and with reference to the articles in daily newspapers and magazines of the 1990s. The urbanisation experience of Turkey, particularly in istanbul with respect to the formation of civic culture against varoS culture is investigated. The construction of ideal modern individual against maganda is examined and it is argued that the features attributed to maganda like moustache, arabesk music, lahmacun and bad smell had become objects of symbolic hate.

Full texts in great numbers. For the fieldwork, conducted in northern Cyprus in 2006, a research sample of 30-immigrant households of Turks from Bulgaria was interviewed with a qualitative in-depth and face-to-face interaction interview technique. The interview questionnaire was directed either towards one female or male member from each household. During the interviews, lived experiences of immigrant Turks from Bulgaria in both the countries of origin and also destination were asked. Therefore, a comparative before and after migration analyses was aimed. In the light of this, specified socio-economic and socio-cultural research themes referred to the overall interpretations of whether citizenship status of immigrant Turks from Bulgaria was inclusive or exclusive of both into the Bulgarian and northern Cypriot societies. The thesis draws a conclusion of notably revealed relationship between citizenship experiences and the shifting identity perceptions as a result of migration. Interview findings indicate that related to the conditions of their socio-economic and cultural environments in both Bulgaria and northern Cyprus, they were either included or excluded from social citizenship status. Immigrant respondents perceived themselves as excluded in the areas of employment and educational opportunities, cultural activities and in establishing associations in Bulgaria. On the other hand, in northern Cyprus they have perceived themselves as excluded in terms of work life and finding an occupation, high-income opportunities, finding decent accommodation and neighborhood relations. Besides, in the former they perceived themselves as discriminated because of their Muslim-Turkish identity and in the latter because they have been accepted as migrants and a marginally subordinate group in the social hierarchy.

Full textDefence of territory in north-east Iran in the 9th-11 th centuries is broached both as a practice –through a study of fortifications and of fighters' mobilization-, and as a rhetorical object. It first appears in texts as a tool of political legitimation for emirs and sultans who seize independent power in Khorassan and/or Transoxiana. They justify their own power in the eyes of the caliph and of local populations -élites and ordinary people- by putting forward their role as defenders of Dar al-islam from the turkish Enemy. The union of jihad doctrine and of the epic in which Iran and Türan are face-to-face permits to make Turks the incarnation of the Enemy. This rhetorical construction is based on the idea of a one, slender and tight frontier facing the steppes of north-east. But a thorough analysis of process and practices of defending the territory, through archeological and textual sources, shows that this construction conceals three elements : first, relations with turkish people are often made of cohabitation. Second, usually priority goes to protecting exchanges and keeping economy in working order, rather than to performing jihad. Third, in spite of their idealized image of protecting heroes, emirs and sultans have to share the practice of defence with the entire population, including fighters who do not belong to state armies. In a context where political, social and territorial tensions are recurrent, defence is directed above all against muslim co-religionisrs, at every spatial scale, in spite of the unifying propaganda of emirs
