Abstract:
Since near-death experiences (NDEs) are no longer a niche topic in the discourse of Western societies, but have already been and are being widely received and disseminated in the media, the potentials of scientific research on the topic are far from being exhausted. This may have something to do, not least, with the fact that dealing with NDEs challenges established understandings of science perhaps more than other topics. The present anthology therefore makes three proposals for a new perspective on the topic and for continuing the discussion that has already begun: It will ask about the negotiation of boundaries, about ›near-death experiences‹ as a scientific concept, and about the potentials of interdisciplinary work. For this purpose, contributions from different scientific disciplines such as religious studies, theology, sociology, and medicine will be gathered, each of them dealing with the topic from their own specific view.

Abstract:
TÜBA-EMAN symposium, titled as “Exploring the Commonalities of the Mediter-ranean Region”, was held two years ago. It was our wish to publish the proceedings in the aftermath of the symposium. The publication has been delayed due to, among other reasons, the transitional period that TUBA has gone since then. I am glad that the papers, except three of them, have now been compiled and TUBA is pleased to publish the Proceedings. The Proceedings comprises the full texts of the papers, the original symposium programme and abstracts of the presented papers. TUBA sees itself as part of the global scientific community and values its coopera-tion with sister academies and inter-academy organizations. We shall do our best to contribute towards the activities of EMAN in the future as well. I would like to express my thanks to those academicians who showed relentless efforts in organizing this symposium, most notably Pavao Rudan, the President of EMAN, Ahmet Cevat Acar, the then President of TUBA, and A. Nuri Yurdusev, the then Vice President of TUBA. I would also like to thank the contributors to this Pro-ceedings and our staff in TUBA as well.

Wyatt, Tristram D. 4. Learning and animal culture. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/actrade/9780198712152.003.0004.

Full text
Abstract:
Learning is an animal’s capacity to change behaviour, as the result of individual experience, so that it is better adapted to the animal’s physical and social environments. Learning helps to fine-tune behaviour in flexible ways that would be difficult to encode genetically. It is an inherent property of nervous systems in even the simplest animals. Memory is an animal’s capacity to retain learned information to influence future behaviour. ‘Learning and animal culture’ discusses both classical and operant conditioning; innate responses that do not require learning; social learning, which across generations leads to cultural traditions; and the use of tools, which is now known not to be a uniquely human ability.

Hohmann, Jessie, and Daniel Joyce, eds. International Law's Objects. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198798200.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
International law’s rich existence in the world can be illuminated by its objects. International law is often developed, conveyed, and authorized through its objects and/or their representation. From the symbolic (the regalia of the head of state and the symbols of sovereignty), to the mundane (a can of dolphin-safe tuna certified as complying with international trade standards), international legal authority can be found in the objects around us. Similarly, the practice of international law often relies on material objects or their image, both as evidence (satellite images, bones of the victims of mass atrocities) and to found authority (for instance, maps and charts). This volume considers these questions: firstly what might the study of international law through objects reveal? What might objects, rather than texts, tell us about sources, recognition of states, construction of territory, law of the sea, or international human rights law? Secondly, what might this scholarly undertaking reveal about the objects - as aims or projects - of international law? How do objects reveal, or perhaps mask, these aims, and what does this tell us about the reasons some (physical or material) objects are foregrounded, and others hidden or ignored. Thirdly what objects, icons, and symbols preoccupy the profession and academy? The personal selection of these objects by leading and emerging scholars worldwide will illuminate the contemporary and historical fascinations of international lawyers. By considering international law in the context of its material culture the authors offer a new and exciting theoretical perspective on the subject.

Brennan, Amanda. The Craft of Screen Acting. Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9781350139671.

Full text
Abstract:
Have you been working as an actor, but want to refine your craft and take your performance to the next level? Or do you want to transition from stage to screen acting, and secure a role on Netflix? In this essential book for young working actors, Amanda Brennan offers a specifically psychophysical approach to acting, which provides an understanding of the body as the springboard for creative exploration. Starting with understanding your own instrument, you will learn how to prepare and tune the body for creative work. This is followed by strategies for the refinement of craft, including exercises on voice, movement, character development and rehearsal processes for screen. Experienced young actors, casting directors and agents such as Asa Butterfield (The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, Hugo, Sex Education), Hannah Rae (City of Tiny Lights), Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones), Daniel Edwards and Christina Shepherd offer their comments and share invaluable advice in interviews throughout the book. With this guide, you will develop a receptive and expressive instrument and be able to build a multi-dimensional character, throughout your career.

Purcell, Brad. Dingo. CSIRO Publishing, 2010. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9780643100855.

Full text
Abstract:
Many present-day Australians see the dingo as a threat and a pest to human production systems. An alternative viewpoint, which is more in tune with Indigenous culture, allows others to see the dingo as a means to improve human civilisation. The dingo has thus become trapped between the status of pest animal and totemic creature. This book helps readers to recognise this dichotomy, as a deeper understanding of dingo behaviour is now possible through new technologies which have made it easier to monitor their daily lives. Recent research on genetic structure has indicated that dingo ‘purity’ may be a human construct and the genetic relatedness of wild dingo packs has been analysed for the first time. GPS telemetry and passive camera traps are new technologies that provide unique ways to monitor movements of dingoes, and analyses of their diet indicate that dietary shifts occur during the different biological seasons of dingoes, showing that they have a functional role in Australian landscapes. Dingo brings together more than 50 years of observations to provide a comprehensive portrayal of the life of a dingo. Throughout this book dingoes are compared with other hypercarnivores, such as wolves and African wild dogs, highlighting the similarities between dingoes and other large canid species around the world.

Berressem, Hanjo. Felix Guattari's Schizoanalytic Ecology. Edinburgh University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/edinburgh/9781474450751.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Félix Guattari’s Schizoanalytic Ecology argues that Guattari’s ecosophy, which it regards as a ‘schizoanalytic ecology’ or ‘schizoecology’ for short, is the most consistent conceptual spine of Guattari’s oeuvre. Engaging with the whole spectrum and range of Guattari’s, as well as Guattari and Deleuze’s works, it maintains that underneath Guattari’s staccato style, his hectic speeds and his conceptual acrobatics, lie a number of insistent questions and demands. How to make life on this planet better, more liveable, more in tune with and adequate to the planet’s functioning? How to do this without false romanticism or nostalgia? At the conceptual centre of the book lies the first comprehensive and in-depth analysis and explication of the diagrammatic meta-model that Guattari develops in his book Schizoanalytic Cartographies, his magnum opus and conceptual legacy. It is here that Guattari develops, in an extremely formalized manner, the schizoecological complementarity of what he calls ‘the given’ (the world) and of ‘the giving’ (the world’s creatures). After considering the implications of schizoecology for the fields of literature, the visual arts, architecture, and research, this book, which is the companion volume to Gilles Deleuze’s Luminous Philosophy, culminates in readings of Guattari’s explicitly ecological texts The Three Ecologies and Chaosmosis.

Entwisle, Timothy. Sprinter and Sprummer. CSIRO Publishing, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9781486302048.

Full text
Abstract:
Since 1788, Australia has carried the yoke of four European seasons that make no sense in most parts of the country. We may like them for historical or cultural reasons, or because they are the same throughout the world, but they tell us nothing of our natural environment. It's time to reject those seasons and to adopt a system that brings us more in tune with our plants and animals – a system that helps us to notice and respond to climate change. Using examples from his 25 years working in botanic gardens, author Timothy Entwisle illustrates how our natural world really responds to seasonal changes in temperature, rainfall and daylight, and why it would be better to divide up the year based on what Australian plants do rather than ancient rites of the Northern Hemisphere. Sprinter and Sprummer opens with the origins and theory of the traditional seasonal system, and goes on to review the Aboriginal seasonal classifications used across Australia. Entwisle then proposes a new five-season approach, explaining the characteristics of each season, along with the biological changes that define them. The book uses seasons to describe the fascinating triggers in the life of a plant (and plant-like creatures), using charismatic flora such as carnivorous plants, the Wollemi Pine and orchids, as well as often overlooked organisms such as fungi. The final chapter considers climate change and how the seasons are shifting whether we like it or not.
