Chau, Tsoi Ying. "The impact of signalling environmental consciousness on the perceived contamination and attractiveness of sustainable clothing." Thesis, Queensland University of Technology, 2021. https://eprints.qut.edu.au/226098/1/Tsoi%20Ying_Chau_Thesis.pdf.

Abstract:
This thesis examines how the type of waste recycled into textiles influences consumers’ contamination perceptions and other responses to sustainable clothing. Two experiments were conducted through online surveys to examine consumers’ responses to clothing made from materials like recycled coffee grounds and used plastic bottles. The use of recycled waste that is perceived to be more natural in manufacturing sustainable clothing reduces consumers’ negative contamination perception but does not increase the product’s attractiveness. To overcome contamination concerns, visual signalling of environmental consciousness through a logo on the clothing was investigated; however, this strategy should be undertaken with caution.

Abstract:
Ba(Zr 0.8-xCe xY 0.2)O ₃-delta (0 < or = x < or = 0.4) (BZCYs) powders were successfully fabricated by both solid state reaction and glycine-nitrate process. Lithium fluoride (LiF) was selected as a liquid phase sintering additive to lower the sintering temperature of BZCYs. Using LiF as an additive, high density BZCYs ceramics can be obtained at sintering temperatures 200~300 °C lower than the usual 1700 °C with much shorter soaking time. Nuclear reaction investigations showed no lithium and a small amount of fluorine reside in the sample which indicates the non-concomitant evaporation of lithium and fluorine during the sintering process. Scanning electron microscopic investigations showed the bimodal structure of BZCY ceramics and grain growth as Ce content increases. In a water saturated hydrogen containing atmosphere, BZCY ceramics have higher conductivity when LiF is used in the sintering process. LiF-added BZCY electrolyte-supported fuel cells with different cathodes were tested at temperatures from 500 ~ 850 °C. Results show that Pt cathode gives much higher power output than ceramic cathodes, indicating much larger polarization from ceramic cathodes than Pt. Ba(Zr 0.6Ce 0.2Y 0.2)O ₃-delta anode supported proton conductive solid oxide fuel cells (H-SOFCs) show low power output due to its low proton conductivity. Ba(Ce 0.8Y 0.2)O ₃-delta anode supported H-SOFCs show excellent power output. Different H ₂ and O ₂ partial pressures were used for fuel and oxidative gas, respectively, to obtain information for V(i) modeling. Different thicknesses of supporting anode were used to obtain saturation current densities of H-SOFC. Using the dusty-gas model which includes Stefan-Maxwell equation and Knudsen terms, the calculation gave tortuosity of our supporting anode 1.95 + or = 0.1. The gas concentrations across the anode were also calculated by knowing the tortuosity of the supporting anode. An electrochemical model of H-SOFC was developed. The excellent agreement between model and experimental data implies that our model is close to the true physical picture of H-SOFC. The more accurate prediction of our model, based on a physical picture of electrochemical processes, also provides a replacement for using the Butler-Volmer equation in SOFC modeling. In the parametric analysis, our model shows that ohmic polarization and cathodic polarization limit the performance of H-SOFC. Research for improving H-SOFC performance should be focused on reducing electrolyte thickness, increasing proton conductivity of electrolyte and finding a compatible cathode material.

Abstract:
There are many abandoned villages in the remote areas of Hong Kong, especially in the New Territories. They are the result of urbanization and economic transition of Hong Kong. Some of these abandoned villages become relics and visitorsʼ attractions due to their long history, rural settings and unique culture. However, preservation is not a free lunch. Transforming them into museums or galleries for educational purpose may not be the real sustainable way of keeping them. This thesis aims to explore a viable form of rejuvenating an abandoned village, where urban people can have a rural experience while preserving the heritage of the village.

This paper describes a method for determining high resolution time, space, and position information for a test range flight vehicle using four tracking receivers. Equipped with GPS time systems, each receiver records the exact time at which a time marker embedded in the transmitted TM data stream is received. With this information, the time difference of arrival for the time markers at three of the receivers can be calculated referenced to the fourth. Using this time difference, the position of the transmitter can be determined. The accuracy with which the received signal time delay can be calculated depends on the accuracy of the GPS time system at each receiver. The effect of time accuracy on positional resolution is evaluated.

Most test ranges are required to process both telemetry and Time Space Position Information (TSPI) data in real time. Using the Integrated Flight Data Processing System (IFDAPS) at Edwards AFB as an example, this paper identifies some of the basic differences between telemetry and TSPI data processing and discusses methods of integrating the two types of processing. Included for consideration in the integrated processing are data acquisition, measurement displays, recording, derived measurement computations using both types of data, and post flight merging of telemetry and TSPI data. Data processing is discussed in a concurrent, multiple operation environment using separate, integrated processors.

The Range Instrumentation and Control System (RICS) is a network of personal computers (PCs), routers, and switches designed to transport time-space-position information (TSPI) and/or other data between multiple Test Sites and data reduction facilities. The typical use of RICS will be the transport of TSPI data from a System Under Test (SUT) to a Focus Site for real-time display and post-mission analysis of the data. This capability will be expanded to include the transport of telemetry (TM), video, and communications data via the RICS. This paper will discuss the overall hardware design of the RICS. It will further describe the programmatic issues encountered during the implementation phase of the RICS project. The paper will describe the initial design criteria, the selection of hardware to implement the design, problems encountered with the implementation of the hardware, solutions and workarounds to the problems encountered, and lessons learned during the entire process.

Abstract:
A methodology to obtain design guidelines for gate oxide input pin protection and high voltage output pin protection in Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) time frame is developed through measurements and Technology Computer Aided Design (TCAD). A set of parameters based on transient measurements are used to define Transient Safe Operating Area (TSOA). The parameters are then used to assess effectiveness of protection devices for output and input pins. The methodology for input pins includes establishing ESD design targets under Charged Device Model (CDM) type stress in low voltage MOS inputs. The methodology for output pins includes defining ESD design targets under Human Metal Model (HMM) type stress in high voltage Laterally Diffused MOS (LDMOS) outputs. First, the assessment of standalone LDMOS robustness is performed, followed by establishment of protection design guidelines. Secondly, standalone clamp HMM robustness is evaluated and a prediction methodology for HMM type stress is developed based on standardized testing. Finally, LDMOS and protection clamp parallel protection conditions are identified.

This paper describes a short distance telemetry network which measures and relays time, space, and position information among a group of ground vehicles. The goal is to allow a lead vehicle to be under human control, or perhaps controlled using advanced autonomous path planning and navigation tools. The telemetry network will then allow a series of inexpensive, unmanned vehicles to follow the lead vehicle at a safe distance. Ultrasonic and infrared signals will be relayed between the vehicles, to allow the following vehicles to locate their position, and track the lead vehicle.

The Global Positioning System of satellites and pseudosatellite ground stations (GPS) is designed to provide very accurate Time, Space, and Position Information throughout the entire world. It is also being used to provide such information to unmanned vehicles operating on test ranges throughout the United States, as a replacement/ adjunct for tracking radar as well as a form of guidance. What is proposed in this paper, for which a patent has been applied, is that the existing L-Band RF link carry command information, when required, as well as TSPI information.

"The cognitive and affective framing processes in the Tsoi Yuen resistance movement in Hong Kong." 2014. http://library.cuhk.edu.hk/record=b6115523.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigates the construction and development of opposition frames in a social movement by exploring three important dimensions: the discursive, contested, and affective processes. This study first elucidates how counter-frames can be discursively constructed to gain legitimacy in challenging the dominant hegemonic belief. Second, the study reviews how the framing processes have been influenced by the Internet in the digital era. Finally, it investigates how the aestheticization of frames relates to the affective mobilization of a movement. These questions were addressed through the case of the Tsoi Yuen resistance movement, a two-year struggle in Hong Kong. To this end, textual analysis, interviews, and participant observations are employed.
This study seeks to elaborate upon the framing perspective by discussing not only the cognitive meaning alignment processes, but also expanding the theoretical discussion in the affective dimension of framing, which is an under-explored area. In addition, it contributes to the investigation of the expanded frame contestations in the Internet era.
On the cognitive level, this thesis argues that the discursive framing strategies have worked best when meanings are activated by exploiting the social, political, and cultural cleavages in post-colonial Hong Kong. In addition, the transformation of framing strategies can facilitate mobilizations across a variety of groups of targets when different cleavages are echoed.
For the contested framing processes, it is argued that the media ecology of the framing contest between the movement’s frames and the dominant frames constructed by the government and the mainstream media have been considerably enlarged by the Internet. The distributed contested power and sedimentary networks emerging in the Internet era are enabling the contested processes in the frame battle.
Finally, on the affective level, this study argues that the series of aesthetic movement tactics employed in social movements enhance the affective dimension of framing processes through the mediation of the emotional and moral components. Aestheticized frames serve to consolidate engagements among the movement’s participants and to appeal to the publics at large.

"Nationalism and Its Discontents: Transformations of Identity in Contemporary Russian Music on and off the Web." Doctoral diss., 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.62826.

Full text
Abstract:
abstract: This dissertation presents a multifaceted examination of the complex sociopolitical contexts of contemporary popular and classical music in Russia. By attending to the competing expectations of Russian creators, government officials, impresarios, critics, and listeners, it examines how contemporary musical artists have navigated the shifting nationalistic and popular moods of the past two decades. I argue that popular music artists Olga Kormukhina and Polina Gagarina, composer Rodion Shchedrin, and the Mariinsky Theater have transformed the works of past artists, including Viktor Tsoi and Nikolai Leskov, updating them according to a popular demand for patriotic works that the Russian state has cultivated through its media outlets and official pronouncements on cultural policy. Other rock musicians (Konstantin Kinchev and the band Bi-2) have also transformed their political identities to match the present-day demands and expectations of either Russian officialdom or their particular Russian audiences. With the exception of Bi-2 (an ambiguous counterexample), all of these transformations have led to greater associations with nationalistic sentiments or fervent support for state agendas in the contemporary geopolitical arena. Exploring the wide variety of styles and genres in this dissertation required a methodological versatility involving archival research, reception history, the analysis of musical scores and sound recordings, an examination of prose and poetic texts, and close study of visual imagery in music videos and onstage. The approach to reception history is the most groundbreaking, for it considers a wide range of digital sources, including blogs and social media comment threads, and makes use of language partner apps to augment the pool of informants, allowing conversation with Russians living outside the limited geographical range (St. Petersburg and Moscow) considered by previous studies. This holistic approach to contemporary reception history helps us to better understand how Russian audiences from diverse regions perceive these ongoing transformations.

Evidentiality usually means the verbal category that indicates the source of the information on which the speaker’s statement is based. The present study uses evidentiality in the broadest sense, i.e., anything concerning linguistic coding of the speaker’s knowledge. There is so far no research in the pragmatics of evidential markers in a particular language. We are convinced that it is significant to consider both the meanings and functions in order to fully understand the evidential paradigm. This study aims to investigate the semantics and pragmatics of the evidential system in Tsou, where marking of evidentiality is observable in several domains. The Tsou evidential system is examined in three aspects: (1) the case markers that serve as evidential markers, (2) the modal category that includes epistemic particles and affixes expressing uncertainty, (3) the hearsay evidential that indicates the speaker’s source of knowledge and uncertainty. Our research questions are as follows. First, how are the various types of evidentials distributed in sentences? Second, what are the meanings of these evidentials in different structures? Finally, what pragmatic functions do the evidentials perform? These questions will be addressed in the course of this study. The current study analyzes data from Taita Corpus of Spoken Tsou and fieldwork notes. It is found that though Tsou case markers have inherent semantic features showing source of knowledge and manner of acquiring knowledge, the pragmatic factors such as involvement, intimacy and responsibility should be taken into consideration. Moreover, our study suggests that part of the Tsou modality system overlaps with the evidential system. For instance, sentence-initial epistemic particles are evidential markers that indicate the speaker's state of knowledge, source of knowledge, mode of knowing and degree of certainty. These particles form sentence-initial combinations that share similar functions. The affixes for uncertainty -n- and -n usually go along with aspectual markers and appear in conditional sentences to mark impossible wish, minimize impact of speech act and indicate the speaker's uncertainty. Finally, we probe into the hearsay evidential nana in report structure and in other structures where the speaker intends to show uncertainty and evade responsibility. In other words, the discussion of the Tsou evidential can never be complete if we do not take into account both meanings and functions of evidentials.

Negation in Tsou Abstract The principal aim of the thesis is to describe the linguistic facts concerning Tsou negations from the Principles-and-Parameters point of view. It consists of two main parts. The first part includes the descriptive discussion of the syntactic and semantic properties of negative markers. In this section, data concerning NEG elements are presented in detail. The second part concerns analysis of negative markers and the argumentation for two kinds of negative markers in Tsou. O’a is an A’-specifier of NegP projection, which c-selects and scopes over IP. It initiates sentences and is a sentence negation. The other kind of negative markers such as o’te always occur sentence-medially. They are categorical negations, and are located at the adjunct position of VP. Pursuing Kayne’s (1989) clitic climbing analysis and Rizzi’s discussion of ‘inner island’ effect, we adopt that o’a in Tsou is A’-specifier of NegP projection because it does not block clitic climbing but stops the extraction of adjuncts. The same analysis is adopted to analyze the sentence-medial negative marker o’te, and we conclude that it is an adjunct of VP, which blocks subject cliticization in this language. By viewing the interactions between negative markers and quantifiers as well as adverbials, we gain support for our claims that two types of negative markers exist in Tsou. It is hypothesized that a large class of rules can be reduced to a single one. Languages differ and it could be accounted for by parametric differences of NEG elements. That is, the c-selectional and m-selectional properties of NEG determine the position of the NEG elements in the clause. In Tsou, sentence-initial negative marker c-selects IP and sentence-medial negative markers c-selects VP.

This dissertation begins with a question: why does Tsou look so "exotic"? This question is followed up in Chapter 2 with an overview of some formal issues, specifically those that are generally identified as the hallmarks of the Austronesian linguistics. Those "exotic" Austronesian characteristics are: (i) the grammatical "subject" at the right-periphery, (ii) many possible "passive subjects", (iii) the split subjecthood, (iv) the topic-like "subject," and (v) the "subject-sensitive" A'-extraction. Essentially, there are four main questions involved in the debate in the literature: [1] What is the grammatical relation between the grammatical subject, and the verbal morphology? [2] What is the role of the "subject"? [3] How to account for the grammatical "subject" at the right edge? [4] How to account for the A'-extraction object-"subject" asymmetry? Built on the fundamental argument structure in Tsou, Chapter 3 provides an answer for question [1]. It is the agreement of VOICE feature and the assigned EPP-feature that associates the relation between the "subject" and the verbal morphology. In response to questions [2]-[4], Chapter 4 explores the architecture of the peripheral structures and argues that "subject" is an A'-element, or adjunct, and the right peripheral "subject" on the surface are actually derived from the leftward movement of "subject" and proposition, an effect of "generalized pied-piping". Since the role of the "subject" is a perspective-taker, the proposition evaluated by the pivot ("subject") is thus pied-piped unto the perspective-taker's domain. Moreover, Tsou is proven to be a truly wh-in-situ language, no A'-extraction occurs at all. These properties that give Tsou the distinctive character can be converged into one essential way, the CP-prominent syntax, which demands the pragmatic properties be formally represented in the core syntax. In other words, the macro-parametric CP-prominence is so deeply embedded in the Tsou grammar that it permeates the architecture of the syntactic structure in Tsou. It is the CP-prominent variation that that makes Tsou so radically different from the better-known IP-prominent languages such as English. Accordingly, the mystery of the "exotic" Tsou language is unraveled.

This thesis deals with various causative constructions in Tsou. Not only three main constructions -- poa causative constructions (Tung 1964, Starosta 1974, Zeitoum 2000, Y.-Y.Chang 2004, Huang 2005, and Lin 2002 and 2005), kua causative constructions (Y.-Y. Chang 2004) and causative constructions without poa (Y.-Y. Chang 2004), but also constructions containing poa, like object-control constructions and resultative constructions are analyzed. I mainly concentrate on poa causative constructions and kua causative constructions. Poa causative constructions have been discussed for a long time since they display many bizarre phenomena. For example, a causer never occurs as a subject, whereas a causee can, violating Accessibility Hierarchy (Keenan and Comrie 1977, and Comrie 1981 and 1985). According to new data that poa and following verbs can be separated even when the subject is not causee, I propose that poa is a restructuring verb with the NAV voice, taking the following VoiceP as its complement. The restructuring effect is achieved by the covert movement of the embedded verb, and the covert and discontinuous verb complex takes the causer as its actor, the causee as patient, and other NPs as applicative NPs. As for the phenomenon that causers can not be subjects, I come up with a generalization from constructions with nonfinite clauses that the subject has to agree with the VoiceP in different clauses in terms of voice feature. That the causer cannot agree with the embedded VoiceP makes it unable to be the subject. However, the generalization is available in Tsou because of two properties peculiar to Tsou. One is the causative element is a verb, not affix, and the other is that AF (AV)-only restrictions (Y.-L. Chang and Tsai 2001) is absent in Tsou. These two unique features make Tsou behave differently from other languages in causative constructions. Therefore, my thesis has two main implications. One is that causative constructions stand for a counter example for Focus (Voice) Harmony (Y.-L. Chang 2005) because the matrix Voice bears [-AV] and the embedded Voice carries [+AV] when the subject is causee. The second implication is that the equi-distance effect can also be reached by the covert head movement. Two intriguing phenomena are found in kua constructions. One is that, in addition to auxiliaries, kua can also attract bound pronominal. The other character is that the reason DP kua introduces is always the subject even though it does not agree with the verb and auxiliary. I propose that the KuaP, like HAPPLP, is an argument introducing phrase, taking VoiceP as its complement. Therefore, the reason DP in its spec is the highest candidate to be attracted to IP spec to check EPP.

Fu-tsai is a traditional Hakkanese fermented mustard food in Taiwan. In addition to fu-tsai, mustard is also made into suan-tsai. The aim of this study was to isolate, characterize and identify LAB in fu-tsai and suan-tsai. In this study, we characterized the lactic acid bacterial diversity via the identification of a total of 499 isolates. The isolates were divided into groups by RAPD-PCR and sequencing of 16S ribosomal DNA and representing 16 species of the genera Lactococcus, Pediococcus, Leuconostoc, and Enterococcus. Lb. plantarum, P. pentosaceus and Leu. citreum were the main LAB group during the initial fermentation time of fu-tsai. P. pentosaceus predominated later, whereas Lb. versmoldensis took the place of P. pentosaceus and became predominated after one year. Lb. namurensis was the most abundant during the fermentation time of suan-tsai.

NEGATION IN THAO AND TSOU ABSTRCT This thesis aims to study the negation systems in Thao and Tsou. We explore the similarities as well as differences between these two languages under the framework of Principles-and-Parameters Theory (also known as Government and Binding Theory). This thesis consists of two main parts. The first part includes descriptive discussions of the distributions and semantic properties of negators in Thao and Tsou. We also address some relevant issues on the basis of the observations made in this part, which is comprised of the main body of the second part of this thesis. We have found that firstly, the distinction between word negation and sentence negation is attested in Tsou but not in Thao. Secondly, the tripartite classifications of negators proposed by Yeh et at. (1998) is attested in both languages. Thirdly, we discuss the distributions of the particle tu used in Thao negative constructions and compare three possible analyses of this particle: as a non-finite complementizer, as a linker, and as an accusative case marker. As for Tsou, we examine the grammatical function of the particle ci, which links negators and theme NPs in negative existential and possessive constructions, and identify it as an oblique case marker. We also examine the Neg-parameters of categorial selection and grammatical features proposed by Ouhalla (1990, 1991).
