Abstract:
Every day large volumes of data are collected in the form of time series. Time series are collections of events or observations, predominantly numeric in nature, sequentially recorded on a regular or irregular time basis. Time series are becoming increasingly important in nearly every organisation and industry, including banking, finance, telecommunication, and transportation. Banking institutions, for instance, rely on the analysis of time series for forecasting economic indices, elaborating financial market models, and registering international trade operations. More and more time series are being used in this type of investigation and becoming a valuable resource in todays organisations. This thesis investigates and proposes solutions to some current and important issues in time series data management (TSDM), using Design Science Research Methodology. The thesis presents new models for mapping time series data to relational databases which optimise the use of disk space, can handle different time granularities, status attributes, and facilitate time series data manipulation in a commercial Relational Database Management System (RDBMS). These new models provide a good solution for current time series database applications with RDBMS and are tested with a case study and prototype with financial time series information. Also included is a temporal data model for illustrating time series data lifetime behaviour based on a new set of time dimensions (confidentiality, definitiveness, validity, and maturity times) specially targeted to manage time series data which are introduced to correctly represent the different status of time series data in a timeline. The proposed temporal data model gives a clear and accurate picture of the time series data lifecycle. Formal definitions of these time series dimensions are also presented. In addition, a time series grouping mechanism in an extensible commercial relational database system is defined, illustrated, and justified. The extension consists of a new data type and its corresponding rich set of routines that support modelling and operating time series information within a higher level of abstraction. It extends the capability of the database server to organise and manipulate time series into groups. Thus, this thesis presents a new data type that is referred to as GroupTimeSeries, and its corresponding architecture and support functions and operations. Implementation options for the GroupTimeSeries data type in relational based technologies are also presented. Finally, a framework for TSDM with enough expressiveness of the main requirements of time series application and the management of that data is defined. The framework aims at providing initial domain know-how and requirements of time series data management, avoiding the impracticability of designing a TSDM system on paper from scratch. Many aspects of time series applications including the way time series data are organised at the conceptual level are addressed. The central abstraction for the proposed domain specific framework is the notions of business sections, group of time series, and time series itself. The framework integrates comprehensive specification regarding structural and functional aspects for time series data management. A formal framework specification using conceptual graphs is also explored.

Abstract:
Ionomers are charged polymers that exhibit a great variety of electrical properties and more recently they have been applied as transport layers at polymer devices. In particular, thin films of ionomer have been deposited between the electrodes and the electronic polymers in OLEDs to improve the efficiency of the charge injection. Despite the success of such application, the involved phenomena related to the charge storage and transport mechanisms inside the ionomer thin layer are not clear yet. In this work we used thermal stimulated depolarization current technique (TSDC) with the purpose to elucidate such phenomena. We used for this a sulfonated polystyrene (X-SPS) having lithium (X = Li) or potassium (X = K) as cation counter-ions, and we make structure of metal-polymer-metal in which the polymer is a thin film of SPS, at about 50 nm thick and deposited by spincoating, having aluminum as metal. TSDC technique consists of warm up a previously polarized sample at a constant rate of heating and measure the depolarization current in function of the temperature. The experimental results showed that each thermogram presents two peaks, one of them very dependent on the polarization conditions, i. e., it depends on the polarization temperature and the intensity of the polarization bias. The peaks were studied by considering first order trapping-detrapping (or dipole relaxation) kinetics, from which important parameters, as the activation energy, were obtained.

Abstract:
In the present work, we report, for the first time, measurements of TSDC and TSPC combined with Static Computer Simulation in the CaF2 solid solutions with one or more of the fluorides of aluminium (concentration range between 0.004 and 0.05 mol%), yterbium and lanthanum (concentration of about 0.1 mol%). The following behavior was found in the TSDC spectra: i) below room temperature, the Yb3+ and La3+ and the multidoped samples revealed the 1101011 1 dipole band and the 110/1/21 band while the A13+ and the pure samples displayed no bands; ii) from room temperature, the La3+ and the pure samples showed a depolarization band at 300K due to dislocations, while all the other samples exhibited a band near 370-400K. Combining TSPC and TSDC it was possible to verify that both relaxation bands are due to some kind of localized polarization fenomena. The Computer Simulation results made clear that it is improbable to find isolated A13+ dipoles since the binding energy of the cubo-octahedral cluster is more than two times lower than the values obtained for the rare earth ions. Concerning to the multidoped systems, the binding energies of the mixed cubo-octaedral clusters with A13+ and one of the rare earth ions, were less than half of the values obtained for the same cluster with the rare earth ions. The main conclusions of this work can be sumarized as follows: i) the 370-400K band is due to the cubo-octaedral cluster; ii) the A13+ gives rise mainly to cubo-octahedral clusters; and iii) inside the multidoped samples, the A13+ promotes the formation of cubo-octaedral clusters with the rare earth ions.

Shrestha, Shivesh. "Development of structural condition thresholds for TSD measurements." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/78039.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents (a) results of a field evaluation of the Traffic Speed Deflectometer (TSD) in the United States (b) deflection thresholds to classify the pavement structural condition obtained from the TSD for a small subset of the Pennsylvania secondary road network. The results of the field evaluation included: (1) repeatability of the TSD, (2) ability of the TSD to identify pavement sections with varying structural conditions, and (3) consistency between the structural number (SNeff) calculated from the TSD and SNeff calculated by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT). The results showed consistent error standard deviation in the TSD measurements and that the TSD was able to identify pavement sections that varied in structural condition. Comparison of the SNeff calculated with TSD measurements, using an empirically developed equation by Rohde, with the SNeff calculated by PennDOT’s Pavement Management System based on construction history showed similar trends, although the TSD-calculated SNeff was higher. In order to develop deflection thresholds, a model that related the pavement surface condition to pavement surface age and structural condition was developed. Structural condition thresholds were then selected so that the pavement surface condition predicted from the model for a 10-year-old pavement surface fell within one of the three condition categories (Good, Fair, and Poor), to identify pavements in good, fair and poor condition. With Overall Pavement Index(OPI) characterizing the surface condition and Deflection Slope Index(DSI) characterizing the structural condition, the DSI threshold that separates structurally good from structurally fair pavements was determined as follows: (1) the OPI threshold that separates pavements with good surface condition from those with fair surface condition was obtained from the Pennsylvania Pavement Management System (PMS) and (2) the DSI thresholds were calculated using the determined OPI value and the model equation.

The results of the field evaluation included: (1) repeatability of the TSD: which is the variation in repeated TSD measurements on the same section of the road, (2) ability of the TSD to identify pavement sections with varying structural conditions, and (3) consistency between the structural number (SNeff) calculated from the TSD and SNeff calculated by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT). The pavement structural number is an abstract number expressing the structural strength of the pavement. The results showed that the TSD measurements were repeatable and that the TSD was able to identify pavement sections that varied in structural condition. Comparison of the SNeff calculated with TSD measurements, using an empirically developed equation by Rohde, with the SNeff calculated by PennDOT Pavement Management System based on construction history showed similar trends, although the TSD-calculated SNeff was higher. Abstract:

Variation in sex ratio among clutches of eggs from different females is common in reptiles with TSD, but the mechanisms that cause this variation are unknown. In an effort to shed light on these mechanisms, we first critically review literature that examines variation in temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD) within species. Genetic variation in TSD and maternal effects on TSD are two major mechanisms that have received attention. We outline the types of experiments and data required to demonstrate that a) genetic variation, b) maternally derived steroids, or c) both factors influence variation in sex ratio among clutches. Next, we compare allele frequencies between populations of Chelydra serpentina that differ in thermosensitivity of sex determination and identify population differentiation in putative TSD genes.

Joshi, Chetan. "Development of a Decision Support Tool for Planning Rail Systems: An Implementation in TSAM." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/31024.

Abstract:
A Decision Support model for planning Intercity Railways is presented in this research. The main aim of the model is to generate inputs for the logit model existing in the Virginia Tech Transportation Systems Analysis Model (TSAM). The inputs required by the TSAM logit model are travel time, travel cost and schedule delay. Travel times and travel costs for different rail technologies are calculated using a rail network and actual or proposed rail schedules. The concept of relational databases is used in the development of the network topology. Further, an event graph approach is used for analysis of the generated network. Shortest travel times and their corresponding travel costs between origin-destination pairs are found using Floydâ s algorithm. Complete itineraries including transfers (if involved) are intrinsically held in the precedence matrix generated after running the algorithm. A standard mapping technique is used to obtain the actual routes. The algorithms developed, have been implemented in MATLAB. Schedules from the North American Passenger rail system AMTRAK are used to generate the sample network for this study. The model developed allows the user to evaluate what-if scenarios for various route frequencies and rail technologies such as Accelerail, High Speed Rail and Maglev. The user also has the option of modifying route information. Comparison of travel time values for the mentioned technology types in different corridors revealed that frequency of service has a greater impact on the total travel time in shorter distance corridors, whereas technology/line-haul speed has a greater influence on the total travel time in the longer distance corridors. This tool could be useful to make preliminary assessments of future rail systems. The network topology generated by the algorithm can further be used for network flow assignment, especially time-dependent assignment if used with dynamic graph algorithms.

Abstract:
In Stockholm, Johanneshov the Slaughterhouse area (Slakthusområdet) can be found. A number of companies have gathered there providing the Stockholmers with meat products. This area has a great need for cooling to supply large cold storages. To facilitate this, a central cooling system has been built, supplying the area with effective and safe cooling. The aim of this master thesis study is to give hints to energy efficient and reliable changes that can be put in place at a low marginal cost depending on the future activities in the area. The suggested changes will be presented to the company Bravida (managing the system), which also desires a deeper understanding of the energy flows through the central cooling system. Firstly visiting the site with proper guidance, we have then tried to understand the function of the system including which machines and media that are used. We have described the present design and come up with suggestions on how to improve the cooling system for a more efficient and safer cooling. Account has been taken to the fact that the whole area will be remodelled radically, thus the improvements must give a short payback time or have a value even after the remodelling. A conclusion drawn from our calculations is that the efficiency of the central cooling is low. The average COP 2(Coefficient of performance in the cooling mode) is around 1,2 which is low. That results in a high electric consumption. Apart from this unnecessarily high water consumption for the cooling tower has been has been observed. We have come up with some ideas to improve the system like:  Enhancing the insulation of the buildings, the pipes and the substation components.  Changing parts in the system like pumps valves and fluids  Introducing a new system for cooling the machines – a bedrock storage so that the heat can be utilized

Abstract:
In the environment, bacteria live in communities and hence have evolved distinct behaviours to coordinate their efforts, to develop symbiosis or antagonistic interactions. Particularly, bacteria compete with each other to acquire nutrients, to colonize or to expand their niche. Predator bacteria deploy various systems to recognize and destroy prey cells. One of the most efficient mechanisms is the type VI secretion system (T6SS). This multiprotein apparatus resembles a nano-crossbow that delivers a needle loaded with toxins directly into target cells when in contact with the prey. The needle is built on a platform that is anchored to a membrane complex that is composed of three proteins: TssJ, TssM and TssL. During my thesis, I was specifically interested in the poorly characterized TssM subunit. I defined its topology, participated to the structural characterization of its periplasmic domain and further showed that TssM bears a cytoplasmic NTPase-like domain that interacts with the assembly platform. Interestingly, NTPase proteins switch and regulate various cellular processes, suggesting that TssM might control the activity of the platform. In addition, I identified a fragment of the TssM protein that lies outside of the cell. Because it is the only extracellular portion of the T6SS, we hypothesized that TssM might coordinate prey sensing to T6SS assembly. I further investigated the role of these two regions of TssM with the goal to provide a model for signal transmission. Finally, I have participated to the characterization of TssK, a component of the platform that directly interacts with TssM and hence docks the platform to the membrane complex

Abstract:
Hispanic youth and families, although they comprise a sizeable portion of the population, are underrepresented in mental health settings within the United States and face significant barriers to receiving adequate treatment. Specifically, the lack of availability of Spanish assessment tools for application in treatment prohibits Hispanic clients from accessing the full extent of available therapeutic resources. The Treatment Support Measure (TSM) is a valid and reliable instrument that allows clinicians and researchers to collect information to better understand change processes and relevant client characteristics in therapy. The present study created a Spanish-translated version of the parent and youth TSM (TSM-SP) and assessed its psychometric properties in a Spanish-speaking community sample of 177 youth and 214 adult caregivers. The internal consistency reliability of all domains of the parent and youth versions of the TSM-SP was good, aside from the Youth Motivation domain. In contrast, the test-retest reliability of all domains of the parent and youth versions of the TSM-SP were generally poor. The construct validity of all domains of the parent and youth versions of the TSM-SP as examined by confirmatory factor analysis was excellent, aside from the Youth Motivation domain. Overall, these results laid the foundation for future research examining the utility and properties of the TSM-SP. The TSM-SP has potential to provide clinicians treating Spanish-speaking youth and families with a useful tool to help better serve these populations in therapy and broaden the scope of research into change processes in youth therapy to involve more diverse populations.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to analyse the students learning process in the first term of their Business Administration studies in a university from Lima, when working a didactic sequence, regulated by GeoGebra, that leads them to modify and manipulate a flexible procedure with rectangles that allows them to acquire the conception that they can approximate, as much as they require, the measure of an area, limited under certain conditions, and express such approximation as the addition of the measures of each one of the rectangles areas. Considering that students know geometry formulas and calculus procedures to obtain the measure of polygonal areas, but they don’t know how to determine the measure of a non-polygonal area or what procedure to use to approximate this measure, we plan to answer, from our research, the following question: Will a didactic sequence, regulated by GeoGebra, allow the articulation of the conception that students have regarding the measurement of an area as a number associated to it calculated through geometry formulas and a flexible procedure that allows to approximate that number as much as it is required, and to express that approximation as an addition of terms? For this research, we have selected as theoretical framework some aspects from the Theory of Didactical Situations from Brousseau (1986), so much for the design as for the analysis raised by the didactic situation designed for our research, and which is focused on the mathematical object of area and measurement. Furthermore, we have chosen as methodological framework aspects from the Didactic Engineering from Artigue (1995), where we will analyse the phases that make up its experimental process. To analyse the results of the didactic sequence, we faced the analysis carried out at first with the subsequent analysis to observe whether or not the results were correctly predicted by the researcher. This form of conducting the analysis allowed us to conclude that the student presents difficulties in adapting the way of expressing the sum of the areas of the approximation rectangles as an addition of terms to their learning process.
