Abstract This poem is a creative response to contemporary true crime narratives about baby farming in Victorian times, namely Alison Rattle and Allison Vale’s The Woman Who Murdered Babies for Money: The Story of Amelia Dyer (London: André Deutsch, 2011); and the TV documentary, “Amelia Dyer: Martina Cole’s Lady Killers.”

Abstract:
This article investigates the contemporary fascination with true crime narratives, an subject which is fast becoming a central area of interest in crime fiction studies. As the overarching genre of crime fiction itself becomes the most read literature genre, not to mention its growing popularity in other popular cultural mediums – TV, film, documentary, podcast, blogs, etc., true crime – which has always been a popular sub-genre – is arguably moving centre stage aligned to our recent obsession with the real life figure of the serial killer. The usual discussions of both individual and collective obsession and fascination with such topics, is generally limited to arguments within conscious parameters of ethical choice, This paper will explore an alterative reading that introduces the Lacanian psychoanalytic concepts of the sinthome and jouissance, and argues that any reading of these topics cannot be contained within conceptions of rationality and ethical choice.

Abstract:
The incorporation of thematic and formal references to true-crime texts in recent British and Irish crime novels shows fiction authors acknowledging that they share an audience with true-crime podcasts, documentaries and books. At the same time, these authors assert the particular contribution that fiction makes to the raising of awareness of both real-world crime and its representations. Examples considered include novels by Ruth Rendell, Denise Mina and Catherine Ryan Howard.

Abstract:
Digital platforms have heralded a renaissance in true crime production and engagement, providing previously marginalised voices with opportunities to challenge longstanding – and often problematic – genre conventions. Whilst significant consideration has been given to professional streaming platforms and aural user-generated mediums such as podcasts, few studies have explored visual user-generated content such as that appearing on YouTube. In order to explore these new but increasingly popular forms, we focus on the videos of Stephanie Soo, Samantha Taylor and Bailey Sarian, who combine true crime narratives with the popular YouTube staples of Mukbang, ASMR and makeup tutorial videos. Our work examines the repercussions of true crime becoming a unique selling point within these YouTube subgenres and considers the ethical consequences of using the true crime genre’s paradigms to bring greater attention, likes and subscribers to established YouTube channels. We observe that these videos are contradictory documents which provide a potentially empowering outlet for female-led true crime while simultaneously replicating the troubling trends that have marked the genre as a space in which the bodies of victims are often exploited as entertainment.

Abstract:
Consumption of true crime podcasts has shot up in recent years, with a majority of listeners being female. There are many things which might draw women to these pieces of media. Women who previously reported elevated levels of fear of violent crime have taken to viewing true crime as a safety measure, wanting to become educated on the stories of others in an effort to not become victims themselves. Many women report feeling more confident that they would know how to avoid or get out of a dangerous situation after learning the details of previous crimes. Production and consumption of true crime media can also lead to increased feelings of justice and a desire to speak out about personal experience or societal and systemic issues. Studies have also been done on the effect of hearing women’s voices on true crime podcasts and its relation to the visualization of mutilation in true crime stories. While earlier studies argue that audiences of true crime media have more anxiety and trepidation around violent crime, I argue that true crime podcasts have many psychological benefits, specifically for women. In their podcast, Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark tell murder stories with comedic commentary, including advice about how to avoid meeting the same fate as the victims they speak of. Following the success of the podcast, the hosts published Stay Sexy and Don’t Get Murdered: The Definitive How-To Guide, condensing their tips into book form and sharing their own experiences with true crime. Using select episodes from the podcast as well as the book, I will prove that participating in these audio spaces improves feelings that women have agency over their lives, giving them an awareness of what’s happening around them that makes them savvier, helps them notice patterns, and allows them to break out of the dangerous mold society has placed them in.

Ayres, Tammy. "Drugs and crime : the true relationship." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/38432.

Full text
Abstract:
The link between drug use and crime is well established in academic, policy and treatment, particularly the idea that drug use causes crime, despite the nature of the drug-crime relationship varying between sub-groups of drug using offenders and not existing at all for the majority of drug using non-offenders1. Research suggests the amount of crime attributable to drug use has been over exaggerated. There is a dearth of research examining the drug-crime relationship between non-treatment and non-offender samples, particularly in the UK. There is also less research examining the notion that both drug use and crime are caused by other (third) factors compared to the research examining the idea that drug use causes crime. Thus this research aims to compare a group of drug using offenders (n=149) with a group of drug using non-offenders (n=111) on a number of childhood risk factors (perceived parenting, negative life-events and impulsivity), school and peer variables, as well as their coping to strategies. The aim is to ascertain if criminality among drug users is attributable to these other (third) factors, instead of their drug use causing the crime to facilitate a more in depth understanding of the relationship between drug use and offending. Group comparisons followed by regression analyses were employed to examine whether any variables predicted group membership (drug using offender or a drug using non-offender), while age, job and drug use severity were controlled for. A high number of negative life events experienced before age 18, earlier age of onset for drug use, always being in trouble with the police with friends, receiving no qualifications from school, being expelled from school and behavioural avoidant coping predicted being a drug using offender, while the reasons for initiating drug use (out of curiosity and to socialise with friends) predicted being a drug using non-offender. The results show significant differences exist between drug users that go on to become offenders and drug users who do not, and these differences are attributable to offending/non-offending status rather than drug use. The implications for treatment and policy are considered.

Bullman, Lee. "Nothing but the truth? : truth, true-crime, genre and 'Blowback'." Thesis, University of Huddersfield, 2016. http://eprints.hud.ac.uk/id/eprint/34159/.

Full text
Abstract:
Blowback, my biography of the international drug smuggler Michael Forwell, has, since its publication, been marketed within two commercially and culturally recognised categories, namely true crime and biography. In a commercial sense these titles act as signifiers of content, communicating in broad strokes what the reader can expect from the work, where it might lie within their own view of the cultural landscape and therefore whether or not they find engagement with the work appealing. In a practical sense (i.e. from the point of view of the practitioner, the writer), these categorisations bring with them expectations of both form and content, which influence the work produced within that category to varying degrees, either by their inclusion or their absence. I intend to look at these generic and cultural expectations in relation to my own book Blowback, as well as true crime’s most consistently popular, influential and lauded texts, Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood and Vincent Bugliosi and Curt Gentry’s Helter Skelter, in order to examine the extent to which these expectations shape the work. I will also engage with the work of relevant theorists, including Christian Metz, Steve Neale and Mark Seltzer. I also intend to provide context for both my own creative practice prior to writing Blowback and the extent to which the fiction I wrote went on to influence the ‘true’ crime described within the book. Any study of true crime must wrestle with the genre’s relationship with truth, a relationship I will contextualise via a history of the genre which examines its long, complex and symbiotic relationship with fiction. The true crime shelves are where we store our monsters, and I aim to investigate how those monsters’ brushes with true crime (and with fiction) alter our relationship with them. Interesting notions of truth exist within the study of biography too, and I will look at these where they apply to my portrayal of Michael and his world and where I, the writer of somebody else’s story, might be located within that world.

This study explores the true crime documentary Murder to Mercy: The Cyntoia Brown Story and aims to investigate the protagonist Cyntoia Brown in relation to how her character and story is represented. Due to the consistent rise of awareness in equal rights, as well as the steady increase of black representation in popular television, one might think that it would reflect positively in mass media. Although there have been few changes to representation, the findings that are to be presented suggest otherwise. Narratives within television still heavily relies on stereotyping and following societal norms, which this study desires to expose through a discourse analysis.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In this study, we have examined how male and female content producers of four Swedish true crime podcasts have represented perpetrators, victims and their relatives. The study also examined how producers expressed personal opinions and how they used music. A critical review of these producers is relevant because previous studies have shown they have a great influence on both society and their listeners. The content of the podcasts was studied based on the theories of Sociology of Knowledge, Gender and Representation, using a Semiotic Text Analysis. The results show that male and female content producers represented those involved in the true crime cases in similar ways, but that there are differences in how male and female content producers expressed personal opinions. We have also identified two subcategories in the true crime genre, namely "Talk Show" and "Documentary".

Abstract:
Creating, producing and listening to podcasts has become an increasingly popular way for cultural transmission. Among an infinitely number of genres true crime has been rising in popularity during the last decade. By consuming true crime- podcasts we also affirm the relevance of the cultural exchange. The aim of this study is therefore to examine what this contemporary cultural exchange consists and in what way the transmission affect the actors.  The study was implemented by interviewing creators of true crime- podcasts as well as women consuming numerous podcasts within the genre. By applying Bourdieus theoretical concepts combined with Boltanski and Thevenots theory about orders of worth in the analyses of the empirical material we can acquire a profound understanding of individual practices as well as how they legitimize their actions. From the comprehensive material generated from the interviews we found some distinctive results. First, the creators aim to educade, inform and engender a reflective practice within the consumers. The podcastconsumers assigned that they are listening to true crime- podcast in the purpose of entertainment and the acquisition of information. Also, they keep listening although many of them have experienced feelings of fear and have become more cautious towards their surroundings. The cultural exchange that takes place within the podcast is the creation of meaning and reflection itself.

My research project consists of a creative work and an exegesis. I Shot the Devil is a true crime–inspired fiction manuscript that melds memoir with fiction. My exegesis locates itself in debates surrounding feminism, representational politics and existing cultural historians’ enquiry into creative responses to trauma and crime, via two autoethnographic essays. Both explore the ethical, ideological and epistemological issues surrounding the narrativised representation of marginalised subjects, including victims of crime.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The workload of prisons and the increase in crime is not only a problem in the Republic of Serbia but in the region and the whole world. Therefore, the introduction of alternative sanctions is a step toward reducing the prison population, humanizing the sentence, reducing costs, avoiding the harmful consequences of imprisonment such as stigmatization, deprivation and privation instead of rehabilitation, a positive effect on recidivism, crime prevention, and prevention. The application of alternative criminal sanctions is only at first sight more significant only for minor, possibly moderate crimes. In the first place, that is true, because they are intended for this category of crimes - their perpetrators. However, their application is also of great importance for serious crimes, because it saves the resources of criminal justice, which can be focused on combating serious crimes. Unfortunately, we cannot say that our judicial system applies alternative sanctions exclusively in exchange for short-term imprisonment, which is indicated by the data on the number of persons who have served up to one year in prison in previous years. Statistical data for 2020 for the territory of the Republic of Serbia indicate the following application of alternative sanctions, and according to the Law on Execution of Extrajudicial Sanctions and Measures: Imprisonment served in the premises where the convict lives (house arrest with and without electronic supervision) - 3560, Probation with protective supervision- 19, Penalty of work in the public interest (decisions of the misdemeanor and criminal court) -156, Measure prohibiting leaving the apartment (house arrest) with and without electronic supervision -1066. Keywords: alternative sanctions, punishment, penal policy, excessive crime

Analysis of non-conviction based asset forfeiture laws, policies and court decisions leads to a conclusion that the fundamental human right to property is violated on a systemic scale – standards of proof fall below standard of preponderance of evidence established by current Criminal Law, leading to confiscation of assets without a proof of true criminal origin. Meanwhile, the proof of the criminal origin of assets in most cases is neither linked to the existence of a predicate crime, nor to the traceability of assets from such crime. De facto, in most cases the only sufficient ground for asset forfeiture is a transactional activity match to suspicious transaction methodology by FIU – the lowest possible level of standard of proof, not reaching even the standards of reasonable suspicion or probable cause. Moreover, it is made difficult to prove the legal origin of the property, restricting admission of evidence of legality, as well as presuming “that there should be no difficulty in proving legitimate origin”, regardless of the asset size, transaction history and objective capabilities of the owner.

Abstract:
For the last thirty years, we, as inhabitants of the planet Earth, have been witnessing a powerful technological breakthrough – nanotechnologies, wireless means of communication, cars with autopilot – a commonplace for modern man. The human essence, the soul, and the diseases that doctors have been studying and successfully fighting with them for thousands of years remain unchanged. Almost a century has passed since the term "iatrogenic" was first proposed in medical practice. This term had a different, narrower concept in contrast to modern realities. In modern conditions, even taking into account the fact that from the position of the legislator there is no clear definition for the term "iatrogenic", but it is successfully used in the practice of doctors of forensic medical experts and forensic investigative bodies - "iatrogenic crime". The doctor, in relations with the patient, is the most unprotected person; every word of the patient (patient) is considered true, since from the position of the legislator he is a priori a victim, and the professional experience and scientifically based facts of the doctor are an excuse. At the same time, during the production of forensic medical examinations, only an assessment of the actions of the doctor is made, according to the results of the analysis of which the presence or absence of a causal relationship between the actions of the doctor, but not the patient, is established.

Sylvera, Craig. Black mayors and crime. Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, November 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.26509/frbc-wp-202327.

Abstract:
Local elections are often contested on the grounds of public safety, but do elected officials have any power to curb crime? Black mayors have particular interest in the issue because Black communities are victimized by high levels of crime and fragile police-community relations. Using data on elections of first-time Black mayors, I find that police forces add more Black officers, a finding that is especially true for mayors with executive authority. Officers arrest 48 fewer potential Black offenders per 10,000 Black residents for crimes where they have the ability to exercise discretion, a finding that is commensurate with the overall reduction in crime. This effect is not visible for similar white arrests. Using changes in the levels of arrests and officers induced by pivotal Black elections, I then estimate the correlation of an additional officer on race-specific arrests. An additional Black officer is related to large reductions in discretionary Black arrests, perhaps suggesting increasing the presence and visibility of Black officers may offer a solution to the “over-policing, under-policing” problem Black communities tend to face.

Andersen, Martin Edwin. Keeping It Covered. Inter-American Development Bank, June 1998. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0006874.

Abstract:
This conference discusses the responsibility of media when reporting on crime and the hidden purposes coverage may pursue. The interpretation of crime phenomenon by the press has become a two-edged sword for policymakers and the public. The return to democratic rule throughout the region has meant journalists can report on an endless number of topics extensively; dictatorships frequently were able to suppress the unwelcome news of social turmoil, such as crime, through censorship. However, the "cronica roja"--gripping bloodsoaked true crime tales--carried by many newspapers and magazines can and sometimes do transform individual crimes into misleading characterizations about the threats faced, and about the efficacy of the forces of order in meeting those threats. Crime news is a curious mirror of public mood, which it also helps to generate. Perceptions of threat to personal safety can influence our outlook on the rest of the world, our willingness to be open to others, and our ability to interact in ways that strengthen neighborhoods and communities. This lecture was read in the Conference: Convivencia y Seguridad Cuidadana en el Istmo Centroamericano y la Isla Española, San Salvador, El Salvador, in June of 1998.

Beuermann, Diether. How Much Should We Rely on Test Scores to Measure School Quality? Inter-American Development Bank, August 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0004415.

Full text
Abstract:
While schools may influence academic and non-academic outcomes, it is not clear whether schools that improve test scores are the same schools that causally improve longer-run outcomes. This policy brief uses rich administrative data covering the full population of Trinidad and Tobago to show that (1) School causal effects are multidimensional. Effects on test scores are weakly related to effects on crime, teen births, and adult employment; and (2) Parents of lower-achievers value effects on non-test outcomes relatively more than on tests while the opposite is true for parents of high-achievers. These findings suggest that policy evaluations based solely on test scores may be misleading about the welfare effects of school choice.
