Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to test the proposition that integrated marketing communications (IMC) practice is lagging in the trucking industry. It stems from the more general proposition extant in the literature that business to business (B2B) IMC practice lags business to consumer IMC practice. Design/methodology/approach In total, 109 trucking managers attending the American Trucking Association Annual Management Conference are asked which communications tools they use and for which strategic purposes. The new product adoption model (NPAM) provides a means of measuring efficient IMC practice. Findings Joint space perceptual maps generated by correspondence analysis reveal the association between trucking managers’ IMC mixes and the stages of the NPAM. Inspection shows that trucking managers deploy a relatively large number of traditional and digital tools to support all stages of the NPAM, indicating a sophisticated level of IMC knowledge and practice, contrary to the proposition that IMC practice is lagging in the trucking industry. Originality/value This contrary result suggests that IMC practice proceeds at different rates across B2B industries and must be examined on a per-industry basis. In combination with Garber and Dotson’s (2002) trucking IMC study, this study provides a second data point from which the evolution of IMC practice in the trucking industry can be tracked into the future. Additionally, this paper demonstrates the efficacy of the NPAM as a means of measuring the efficiency of IMC mixes, as well as for monitoring and training. Theoretical and managerial implications are discussed.

Abstract:
This article illustrates the key facts and figures about the transportation sector and its contribution to emissions, in particular the heavy-duty trucking, in terms of the current state of sector in the U.S. in light of increasing recent focus on decarbonization efforts with zero emission trucking. Heavy-duty trucks contribute significantly more to annual mileage traveled, fuel consumption, and greenhouse gas emissions on per vehicle basis, compared to light-duty vehicles and passenger cars. Given the essential role of heavy-duty trucking in freight movement demanding high energy, decarbonizing trucking sector comes with unique challenges overcoming which will have an important impact on reducing global emissions as well as mitigating the adverse health effects arising from these emissions.

Full text
Abstract:
In the global trucking industry, vertical collaboration between shippers and carriers is attained by intermediaries, called brokers. Brokers organize carriers for a shipper in accordance with its quality and price requirements, and support carriers to collaborate horizontally by sharing a large distribution order from a shipper. Brokers also act as trustees, preventing the passing of private information of any party to the others. Despite these benefits, intermediaries in the trucking industry are involved in several sustainability problems, including high costs, high levels of carbon emissions, high percentages of empty miles, low-capacity utilizations, and driver shortages. Several studies have acknowledged the importance of improving collaboration to address these problems. Obviously, the major concern of brokers is not collaboration, but rather to optimize their own gains. This paper investigates the potential of blockchain technology to improve collaboration in the trucking industry, by eliminating brokers while preserving their responsibilities as organizers and trustees. This paper extends the transportation control tower concept from the logistics literature, and presents a system architecture for its implementation through smart contracts on a blockchain network. In the proposed system, the scalability and privacy of trucking operations are ensured through integration with privacy-preserving off-chain computation and storage solutions (running outside of the blockchain). The potential of this design artifact for fostering collaboration in the trucking industry was evaluated by both blockchain technology experts and trucking industry professionals.

Abstract:
The contribution of intercity trucking to air pollution in a given region is readily recognized as significant by transportation and air quality planners. Other than emissions standards for newly sold trucks, neither the air quality nor the transportation planning communities has focused on implementing control strategies that directly mitigate emissions from intercity trucking. As nonattainment areas strive to comply with the National Ambient Air Quality Standards, the potential emission reduction benefits of truck-related control measures must be evaluated to ensure that all sources of emissions are considered in the planning processes. However, little is known about the contribution of intercity trucking to emissions inventories in regions across the country, particularly since the Environmental Protection Agency's MOBILE emissions factor model is not well-suited for this purpose. The incorporation of intercity trucking in emission inventory estimates is reviewed, and a methodology by which intercity trucking emissions can be easily isolated using information documented in state implementation plans (SIPs) is developed. Using SIP data for a select number of metropolitan areas and the Truck Inventory and Use Survey (TIUS), the emissions contributions of city-to-city truck transport and drayage operations are assessed. Furthermore, the contribution of intercity trucking to emission reductions in areas across the country is determined using information reported in 15 percent volatile organic compound reduction plans.

Abstract:
The discoverability and admissibility of post-accident “preventability” determinations by trucking companies is often much disputed in truck accident cases. It is well known that Plaintiff’s attorneys will try to construe a trucking company’s classification of an accident as “preventable” as an admission of fault during the course of a lawsuit. However, statements made by the FMCSA provide significant support to a trucking company’s efforts to preclude discovery or admission of preventability determinations in a lawsuit. Abstract:
Freight forwarding is a logistics company which provide land delivery services rely heavily on trucking vendors. The available trucking vendors may not fulfill the company's expectations. Therefore the research was conducted to analyze the performance, selection process, management and development of 26 trucking vendors. The research began with the formation of a Critical Success Factor (CSF) and its development, namely a Key Performance Indicator (KPI) in accordance with company objectives. Then the CSF and KPI was weighted through the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method, determined the optimal performance value of each KPI, measured the performance of each vendor through the scoring method, analyzed the performance of the trucking vendor that was not optimal through Root Cause Analysis (RCA) by looking for the cause based on fishbone diagrams and FMEA tables, as well as providing suggestions regarding the management and development of trucking vendors. The results of the study were 11 CSFs and 28 KPIs that were formed. Based on the selection process conducted on 26 trucking vendors, there are 3 excellent vendors, 4 very good vendors, 11 good vendors, 3 matching vendors, and 5 unsatisfactory vendors. Furthermore, researcher conducted root cause analysis (RCA) of vendor representatives “matching” and “unsatisfactory” categories with fishbone diagrams and FMEA tables. Where the 5 highest RPN values from the FMEA table were given suggestions for improvement. Meanwhile, the excellent, very good, and good vendor categories are developed through strategic plans for the future.

Abstract:
Road freight plays a pivotal role in the movement of goods from the point of production to the point of consumption. Transportation of freight by road is associated with high operational costs which increases cost of landed goods. The use of trucks is associated with greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and congestion especially in urban areas. The trucking industry dominates freight movement in many countries including South Africa, necessitating the need to improve its operational performance. While researchers argue that implementation of environmentally sustainable practices (ESP) by trucking firms is likely to influence operational performance (OP), the actual effect is unknown. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of ESPs on OP among trucking firms. A survey of 124 trucking firms was conducted and the data was analysed using canonical correlation analysis. The ESPs identified were energy efficiency, driver behaviour, and advanced technology. The results revealed that there is an inverse relationship between ESPs and OP, with advanced technology being a major contributing practice to the relationship. Limited funding was identified as a major inhibitor to the implementation of ESPs among the trucking enterprises. This study informs managers of trucking enterprises that the implementation of environmentally sustainable practices would not likely result in higher operational performance, as such, they should implement the practices as a social good as opposed to for profits. The study investigated a complex phenomenon in an important sector of the economy in South Africa and provide some policy directions.

Abstract:
Abstract Industrial activity of trucking companies belongs to environmentally dangerous processes, which leads to the pollution of natural ecosystems, both in local and regional scale. Currently, there are strict requirements for the quality of wastewater discharged from trucking companies and car-wash sites into the outer sewer or the storm water network. This erases the urgency of the installation of local treatment facilities and implementing of the water circulating supply systems with maximum water consumption and minimum discharge of wastewater into natural water bodies. The improved technology of wastewater treatment for the trucking companies with preliminary stage of the multilayer oil-trap treatment is presented. The modeling of sedimentation process of wastewater contaminated with petroleum products allowed determine structural parameters of the proposed oil trap. The main technological parameters of wastewater treatment according to the proposed technological scheme have been determined. Implementation of the proposed technology at the trucking company allows reduce the content of petroleum products and suspended solids according to Ukrainian normative standards for water quality. This improvement minimizes the impact of contaminated wastewater on neighboring water bodies and extends capacity for water reuse in the technological process of trucking companies.

This paper examines the earnings and employment effect of deregulation in the trucking, railroad, airlines, and telecommunications industries. Findings on nonmanagement workers suggest labor earnings fell sharply in trucking, somewhat in airlines, slightly in telecommunications, and barely in railroads. In contrast, the work force size dramatically increased in trucking and airlines, held steady in telecommunications, and fell dramatically in railroads. The earnings patterns of managers mirrors that of their highly unionized work force. These findings are interpreted as evidence that rent-sharing was not unique to union workers in these industries.

Abstract:
In this timely new book, Shane Hamilton offers a compelling account of the politics of long-haul trucking in the postwar United States and, in particular, its contribution to the rise of economic conservatism by the end of the 1970s. This work, exhaustive in its research, explains a range of critical developments in twentieth-century political economy from the perspective of trucking: from the struggles within and between various federal agencies over farm, labor and consumption policies; to advances in truck design, highway construction, refrigeration, and food packaging technologies; to the cultural development of a trucking genre within country music and Hollywood films.

Abstract:
The presence of certain state taxes is believed to have a negative impact on truck registration and the location decisions of trucking firms. For example, in a metropolitan area that covers two or more states, a trucking firm might not choose to locate in the county that is in close proximity to the metropolitan area’s business districts, population centers, and largest concentration of customers, if that county is in a state that imposes the taxes. Instead, it might choose to locate in a county that belongs to another state that does not impose such taxes as long as that county is adjacent to the metropolitan area’s most industrialized districts. This paper examines the impact that state taxes have on the very competitive trucking industry. Through a case study of Kentucky, we illustrate how state taxes such as the motor vehicle usage tax and the weight distance tax can adversely affect the trucking firm’s decisions in registering and plating trucks, and in locating its facilities.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate and contribute to the understanding of the critical issue of “driver turnover” in the USA long-haul trucking environment which is becoming a malaise in the transportation sector not only in the USA but also worldwide. Most importantly, it accomplishes this through an exploration of the perceptions of the “drivers” themselves regarding the external customer-base in the trucking industry. This, to the best knowledge of the authors, has not yet been done and so becomes the missing angle in focus on driver turnover research. Design/methodology/approach – This exploratory study employs a qualitative research methodology via in-depth interviews of a select sample of drivers in a field setting followed by content analysis of the responses. This methodology, by and large, is the most suitable for this type of exploration. Findings – A content analysis of the perceptions of drivers reveals several important reasons (or causes) for driver turnover. This paper elaborates on those and offers customer-centric solutions to alleviate the plight of the driver and improve overall performance in the trucking sector. Research limitations/implications – Needless to say, this exploratory research should be replicated in several other locations within the USA, other settings (e.g. trucking in extreme conditions), and other countries in order to enhance the external validity of the findings and recommendations. Practical implications – All implications of this research are practical as they have direct managerial significance. Originality/value – The value of this research lies in the fact that, to the best knowledge of the authors, this is the first study that explores the perceptions of long-haul drivers regarding the external customer-base of the trucking industry. The findings have direct implications for management in the trucking sector.

Abstract:
The authors analyze the potential effects of automation on the jobs of truck drivers and conclude that media accounts predicting the imminent loss of millions of truck-driving jobs are overstated. Their conclusion is based on three main factors. First, the count of truck drivers is often inflated due to a misunderstanding of the occupational classification system used in federal statistics. Second, truck drivers do more than drive, and these non-driving tasks will continue to be in demand. Third, the requirements of technology, combined with complex regulations over how trucks can operate in the United States, imply that certain segments of trucking will be easier to automate than others. Long-haul trucking (which constitutes a minority of jobs) will be much easier to automate than will short-haul trucking (or the last mile), in which the bulk of employment lies. Although technology will likely transform the status quo in the trucking industry, it does not necessarily imply the wholesale elimination of the demand for truck drivers, as conventional accounts suggest.

Abstract:
Logistics is a major challenge for multinational corporations seeking to do business in China. Transportation and warehousing are two core activities of logistics which will have to be outsourced or produced internally by foreign firms entering the China market. This paper focuses on road and rail transportation, the primary forms of transport utilized to move finished goods, as well as the warehousing and distribution center service sector. Trucking services and costs are observed to be poor by Western standards. There is no established less-than-truckload (LTL) industry and there are limited trucking networks offering one stop shipping across the country. None the less, trucking will have to be the backbone of any distribution network in China for finished products. Rail service is even poorer. There are capacity constraints and finished goods movement is not a priority of the Chinese railways. Warehousing capacity inherited from state owned enterprises is inadequate, but new distribution centers are being built rapidly. Foreign firms need to recognize these limitations in service, capabilities and capacity in planning their distribution networks. The fragmented nature of both the trucking and warehousing sectors places a premium on the value added by third party logistics providers (3PL’s) who have the knowledge and the relationships with local trucking and warehouse firms to minimize the risk of a supply chain breakdown. The selection of logistics suppliers is the most critical logistics decision in the Chinese environment.

Abstract:
Congestion in the seaports area is a common issue in many parts of the world. Fluctuating truck arrival has been identified as one of the significant determinants of congestion. In response, a truck appointment system (TAS) is introduced to manage truck arrival, particularly at peak times. In the existing TAS mechanism, the scheduling decision is centralized and disregards the concerns of trucking companies. Moreover, TAS may complicate the business operation of trucking companies that already have a constrained truck schedule. This study proposes a decentralized negotiation mechanism in TAS that allows trucking companies to adjust arrival times by utilizing the waiting time estimation provided by the terminal operator. We develop an agent-based model of a TAS in the container terminal pick-up procedure. The simulation results indicate that compared to the existing TAS mechanism, the negotiation TAS mechanism generates a shorter average truck turnaround time regardless of truck arrival rates. In terms of average net time cost, the negotiation TAS mechanism provides better value under high truck arrival rate conditions. The incentive for trucking companies to participate in the negotiations is even higher at peak times.

Abstract:
Abstract Studies of structure and evolution in the European trucking industry have, possibly mistakenly, predicted the shakeout of small motor carriers and argued that only large carriers will be able to create value to shippers in the long run. This prediction is based on an essentially taken-for-granted premise that in the economic theory of industry evolution, the industry life cycle approach applies to the trucking industry. This article argues that it does, in fact, not apply well to this industry, which possesses characteristics that allow for quite different competitive dynamics. The argument is illustrated empirically by a case study of the Danish trucking industry in the 1990s. The study reveals that the Danish trucking industry moves towards increasingly organized markets with a few large carriers, some specialized and flexible small and medium-sized (SME) carriers with vertical and horizontal linkages, and many small carriers and independent owner-operators serving shippers and other carriers on a short-term basis. Adopting a knowledge-based perspective, the persistent coexistence of small, medium-sized, and large carriers can be attributed to the nature and dynamics of demand, the division of labor between different motor carriers, and changes in productive resources.

Abstract:
Background:As one of the most underserved segments of the U.S. labor force, truck drivers have been associated with a series of morbid conditions intimately linked to their occupational milieux, their mostly unhealthful nutritional intake and sedentary lifestyles, and their resulting excess weight-gain.Methods:This paper reports data from a baseline assessment of 25 trucking work settings located around interstate highways I-40 and I-85 in North Carolina. It examines how the environmental attributes of these work settings influence the physical and recreational activity behaviors of truckers, compares findings with those from other occupational environments, and brings to the fore a new health promotion paradigm for trucking worksites. Results:Findings support growing empirical and anecdotal evidence that trucking work settings remain not only active-living deserts, but overall unhealthful places. A scan of physical, social, and information environments within trucking worksites as well as physical environments of surrounding communities reveal only meager opportunities for physical and recreational activity for truckers. Conclusion:This paper places the highly underserved population of truckers firmly within the discourse of worksite health promotion, and calls for comprehensive multistakeholder wellness strategies that address a multitude of risk factors linked to the occupational context.

Abstract:
Trucking companies play a critical role in the U.S. economy but face many challenges. The trucking industry’s greatest challenge may be the persistent driver turnover problem. Trucking companies regularly report turnover rates exceeding 100%. Each driver costs between $2200–$21,000 to replace and new drivers often impact carrier customer service and safety performance. The purpose of this article is to qualitatively explore the challenges drivers face with hopes of uncovering unique methods to improve job satisfaction and ameliorate turnover and retention issues. Results indicate that driver job satisfaction is related to compensation, management quality, equipment quality, home time, and wait time. Proactive managerial actions in the form of pre-planning loads are proposed as a method for carriers to resolve many driver concerns and possibly provide carriers with a competitive advantage in driver retention.

Abstract:
Using data from the American Trucking Associations and a 1991 telephone survey of 223 major firms in the general freight segment of the trucking industry (SIC 4213), the author describes the restructuring of the trucking industry that occurred following economic deregulation that began in 1977 and examines how that restructuring affected industrial relations outcomes such as wages and union strength. He finds that both market concentration and competition increased after 1977. He also concludes that regulatory restructuring led the general freight industry to divide into two sectors, one handling full truckload shipments (shipments of 10,000 pounds or more) and one handling less-than-truckload shipments. The Teamsters Union lost bargaining power in the truckload sector, but it retained much of its bargaining power within the less-than-truckload sector.

Abstract:
Computer-integrated transportation (CIT) is envisioned as an integrated network of public and private transportation organizations, each of which has unique responsibilities but is working toward a common mission of facilitating travel across all modes of transportation. The research on CIT is extended to commercial vehicle operations, specifically to examine how government can work with trucking companies (i.e., motor carriers) within a CIT framework. The research entailed a review of how government currently interacts with trucking companies, interviews with trucking terminal managers, and case studies of terminal operations at five of the nation's largest motor carriers. Opportunities are identified in the area of unifying the interaction between government and industry (along four lines: licensing, roadway information, incident clearance, and enforcement) and in the area of in-vehicle devices for automated record keeping.
