Abstract:

"The Trouble With Fathers: The Impact of Time and Gendered-Thinking on Working Relationships Between Fathers and Social Workers in Child Protection Practice in England." Abstract:
The lives of families entering the child protection arena may be shaped by a range of troubles, including material deprivation, physical and mental health problems, and substance misuse or domestic abuse. Despite the interest in whole family approaches, the issue of how professionals fail to work effectively with fathers is long-standing and resistant to change. This article illustrates challenges in building working relationships with men, including the challenge of avoiding binary thinking in the assessment of fathers as “risk” or “resource.” Drawing on our qualitative longitudinal study of men’s experiences of child protection in England, we highlight how both organizational (clashing time perspectives) and cultural (gendered-thinking) factors can trouble the potential relationship between social workers and fathers. We argue for a more gender sensitive approach to social work practice, which can respond more fully and effectively to the experiences of fathers and mothers.

Abstract:
Missioners and missiologists called home from the wider world, literally or figuratively, to do mission in the United States return to confront a historically liberal society in disarray. To what troubles shall we address our public witness in word and deed? How shall we make our witness intelligible to a traditionally liberal society in the midst of its unraveling? Liberalism’s legitimacy crisis and the decline of the force of its social imaginary since the 1960s define the specific public conditions for a contemporary, contextually sensitive Christian mission in America. Liberalism is taken here not as a political orientation, but as a central theme in the public sensibilities shared by most Americans on the left and right. Liberalism’s often overlooked conceptual foundations and its many manifestations along a spectrum of ideologies and practices are presented as a background to this discussion. As well, the discussion features the pervasive and also overlooked Christian influences that emerged in the 18th century—the American Reformation—and elaborated into the middle of the 20th century to shape a distinctively (mostly) Protestant liberal society. A well-contextualized Christian public witness—and a public missiology—will draw from its own historical resources born in the American Reformation as well as address both post-political despair and metamodern hope if it is to make sense to a liberal society in trouble.

Abstract:
In the past few decades, a multi-billion-dollar “therapeutic boarding school” industry has emerged for America’s troubled upper-class youth. This article examines the therapeutic models prominent in these programs and the ways they conflict with dominant notions of masculinity. Using in-depth interviews and ethnographic fieldwork inside a Western therapeutic boarding school, I show how privileged young men navigate this masculinity dilemma by constructing hybrid masculinities that incorporate qualities associated with femininities and subordinate masculinities. However, these qualities are incorporated strategically and in ways that reproduce and obscure privileges associated with students’ positions as young, upper-class, white men. Using hybrid masculine styles that include humility, commitment to service, and open emotional expression, students re-assert dominant positions as leaders and as “better” men in contrast to various others.

Abstract:
This article focuses on the mechanical limitations of commercial jetliners while flying through volcanic ash clouds. Flying through thick volcanic ash cloud can cause millions of dollars’ worth of damage to the engines—or even shut them down entirely. In order to find out what actually happens in a jet engine ingesting volcanic ash, there is a large body of laboratory data and analysis carried out from 1980 to 1996 by Michael G. Dunn and his colleagues at the Calspan Corp. in Buffalo. Based on the work of Dunn and his co-authors, Boeing has produced a video that goes through a set of procedures that a flight crew can take when encountering ash clouds. The rather extensive research work done by the Dunn group details the effects of volcanic ash on jet engines themselves. According to Dunn, research yet needs to be done on the extent that unfilterable tiny ash particles contained in the ash-laden engine compressor enter the cabin air (the haze reported on flight BA 9) and its effect on sensitive aircraft electronic components and humans.

Abstract:
AbstractThis paper summarises the use of QALYs in evaluating changes in mental health states, highlighting the benefits and challenges of their use in this field. The general principles underlying the QALY measure and the most common methods of measuring QALYs are discussed briefly. Evidence of the usefulness and problems of using this generic measure of health-related quality of life are provided from a sample of recent studies relating to depression, schizophrenia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and dementia. In each case, attempts were made to use QALYs to measure changes in health states. While in principle, the QALY is enormously attractive, its suitability for measuring changes in many mental health conditions remains open to doubt as existing tools for generating QALY scores such as the EQ-5D have tended not to perform sufficiently well in reflecting changes in many mental health states. New developmental work is needed to construct better QALY-measuring tools for use in the mental health field. Both the conceptualisation and measurement of QALYs need to be built on a valid, comprehensive model of quality of life specific to a mental health disorder, to ensure that the resultant tool is sensitive enough to pick up changes that would be expected and seen as relevant in the course of the illness.

Full text
Abstract:
The statistical analysis of magnitude and center-of-mass velocity data for binary galaxies will never provide an adequate estimate of the mass within the orbit, and will therefore never furnish useful information about the mass-to-light ratios of galaxies. There are three main reasons. Firstly, it is very difficult to find a sample which is both objectively selected and dynamically isolated, and in those cases with obvious tidal distortions it is not clear which two points of the confused systems can be taken to be the centers of mass. Secondly, there are several different ways to produce a mass estimator from the available data, and it is not clear which estimator corresponds most closely to what is normally thought of as the gravitational mass of the system. Finally, those mass estimates which include it as a variable depend quite strongly on the orbital eccentricity, and any analysis method is necessarily least sensitive to just this parameter. Therefore, variation even within a single estimator is both considerable and only weakly constrained.

Abstract:
This article examines how a number of teachers of Classics at secondary school level say they deal with sensitive topics, such as violence, religious belief, death and sex and sexuality. In the secondary school original texts are read partly for improving the students' understanding of the language and partly for the study of other aspects of the ancient society, such as the subject matter and the process of a legal case, for example. Therefore, sensitive topics often arise incidentally during the reading of a text rather than because they are the particular feature of the reading. Should teachers brush past such an topic for fear of causing offence or getting into trouble with school authorities or parents, or should they use the topic to develop their students' understanding of the topic at hand – and if the latter, how far should they go?

Abstract:
This article focuses of 13 high school boys’ experiences of getting into “trouble” in a former Colouredi township high school in KwaZulu-Natal Province. This ethnographic study explored the reasons for boys being considered “troublesome”ii at school. Data collection included focus groups, semi-structured open-ended individual interviews and non-participant observation. Using the social constructionist perspective of masculinity as an analytical lens, the findings show that these boys’ schooling experiences are fraught with anti-schooling, anti-academic and anti-authoritarian attitudes and behaviours. They construct themselves as dominant, unafraid and unwilling to conform to school rules, which brings them into conflict with authorities. While some of the group expressed determination to ameliorate their lives, others dropped out of school prematurely. Teacher attitudes are central to either perpetuating “trouble” or being sensitive to these boys’ schooling woes.

Abstract:
As one of the most popular mobile operating system, Android has been troubled by privilege escalation attacks. This is because that the original Android ignores the inspection of transmitted data inintent. It only checks the permission ofintentto determine whether the Inter-Process Communication (IPC) could continue. We developed Nipdroid to solve the mentioned defect in Android IPC detection. Nipdroid is based on the technology of marking and tracking sensitive data. After the original Android detection, Nipdroid extracts the sensitive tags fromintent, and matches them with the permission lists of both communication apps, and then checks whether there is unreasonable data transmission in IPC. Experiments show that Nipdroid is effective on both preventing privilege escalation attacks and protecting user's sensitive data.

Abstract:
The first years of teaching are decisive to shape teachers’ motivation and attitudes, as adaptive professionals that respond to fast changing contexts. This career stage should provide acculturation in collaborative professional communities that discuss and tackle growing challenges for learners’ improvement. Induction support can be key for the personal, social, and professional development of beginning teachers, fostering their leadership to influence and initiate practice change. It needs to be flexible and sensitive to specific education contexts, but it benefits from transversal principles grounded on common European policies. Induction should be embedded in a continuum approach that links it to other career stages - relying on broad, common teacher requirements. The COVID 19 crisis has foregrounded the competences teachers require to ensure equitable learning. Among European Key Competences, the Personal, Social and Learning to Learn Competence and the Digital Competence can play a crucial role for teachers grappling with distance teaching and unpredictable professional conditions. While Digital competence is fully acknowledged to be key for teacher professionalism, Personal, Social and Learning to Learn is now becoming crucial for teachers’ motivation, innovation, and distributed leadership, to face problematic scenarios.

Abstract:
The implications of climate change for biological invasions are multifaceted and vary along the invasion process. Changes in vectors and pathways are likely to manifest in changes in transport routes and destinations, together with altered transit times and traffic volume. Ultimately, changes in the nature of why, how, and where biota are transported and introduced will pose biosecurity challenges. These challenges will require increased human and institutional capacity, as well as proactive responses such as improved early detection, adaptation of present protocols and innovative legal instruments. Invasion success and spread are expected to be moderated by the physiological response of alien and native biota to environmental changes and the ensuing changes in biotic interactions. These in turn will likely affect management actions aimed at eradicating, containing, and mitigating invasions, necessitating an adaptive approach to management that is sensitive to potentially unanticipated outcomes.

Abstract:
Recent pedagogical, economic, and technological changes require law schools to reevaluate their resource allocations. Although typically viewed in terms of curricular changes, it is important also to focus on the very significant investment in legal scholarship and its impact. Typically, this has been determined by some version of citation counting with little regard for what it means to be cited. This Article discusses why this is a deeply flawed measure of impact. Much of that discussion is based on an empirical study the Authors conducted. The investigation found that citation by other authors is highly influenced by the rank of the review in which a work is published and the school from which the author graduated. Courts, on the other hand, are less sensitive to these markers of institutional authority. Perhaps more importantly, when the purpose of the citation is examined, a very small handful of those citing a work do so for anything related to the ideas, reasoning, methodology, or conclusions found in the cited work. This is slightly less true for judicial citation compared to citations by other authors. Given the level of current investment in legal scholarship and findings that reliance on it is far lower than citation counts would suggest, the Authors offer a number of recommendations designed to increase accountability of legal scholars and the utility of what they produce.

Abstract:
Patients with movement disorders do not always complain about their ‘troubles with muscles’ spontaneously, and sometimes, often out of shame, they try to hide their involuntary movements. E.g. a hand tremor can be temporarily suppressed by pushing the hand against the body or sitting on it. To reveal these movement disorders, a systematic investigation of the patient is required. This investigation consists of a (hetero) anamnesis and a physical examination. The anamnesis demands knowledge of sensitive questions such as: ‘Do you notice any movements that are not under your control? Do you feel restless: an inability to keep the legs still? Do you tremble, are you slower than usual?’ Next, a physical examination is required. The investigator lets the patient execute several movements such as stretching the arms, opening the mouth and walking. In this workshop you will learn and practice this highly sensitive examination. In clinical practice this investigation takes less than 5 minutes and will reveal all drug induced movement disorders.

Abstract:
The epidemic of Dengue is steadily increasing in more than 100 endemic countries. During critical phase, of this disease, shock with organ dysfunction and severe bleeding, can occur. Rarely, it can be further complicated by Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), which results from aberrant activation of immune mechanism. HLH is a rare, frequently fatal if untreated condition. It challenging to diagnose because initial symptoms mimic other conditions which are more common. Dengue induced Secondary Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), may be responsible for severe form of Dengue with adverse outcomes. We describe a case of an infant, with Dengue fever whose clinical situation deteriorated after being stable during initial phases of illness due to development of Secondary Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH). The child had persistent fever, anemia, hepatomegaly with deranged coagulation which directed towards diagnosis of Secondary Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH). We discuss the features of our case and its management to sensitize the clinicians to consider this condition in patients with severe Dengue fever.

Abstract:
The messianic dream owes its roots to biblical prophecy and its rich development to generations of sensitive and creative exegetes anxiously awaiting redemption. Scripture itself is less than generous in providing detailed information about the end of days, so ungenerous, in fact, that some modern scholars have expressed skepticism about the very appearance of a messianic figure in the biblical text. While this skepticism is excessive, it reflects a reality which troubled the ancients no less than the moderns and left room for the diversity and complexity that mark the messianic idea by late antiquity.

Abstract:
Background. Takotsubo is a syndrome characterized by transient regional systolic dysfunction of the left ventricle (LV). The most common clinical presentation mimics acute myocardial infarction without angiographic evidence of obstructive coronary artery disease or acute plaque rupture.1-3 The diagnosis and management became a challenge when it presented as atypical symptoms and significant obstructive coronary artery. Thus, this case report highlights the diagnosis and management of Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy with obstructive coronary artery disease.Case illustration. A 71 years old woman came to the emergency room with a chief complaint of dyspnea from one week ago and worsened in the last three days. The initial electrocardiogram showed slight ST-elevation, and thorax Rontgen showed the congestion and elongation of the aorta. Increased high-sensitive Cardiac Troponin T and The NT-Pro BNP levels were present, along with apical ballooning of the LV and reduced RV function. Physiological stress was found to be the death of her husband one week ago. Although the left ventriculography of this patient was classically depicted as the octopus trap, we did find obstructive coronary artery disease in the left anterior descending artery. Abstract:
With the rapid development of electric power industry in our country, the extra-high voltage power transmission system is widely applied so that the power transformer plays a more and more important role. This not only requires the transformer to quickly protect the circuit system but requires the transformer to be sensitive and reliable. Generally speaking, the method of differential protection is used to deal with some troubles when it breaks down such as the faster actuation time and wrong operation in magnetizing inrush current according to the second harmonic principle and waveform symmetry principle. On the basis of using second harmonic principle, we try to introduce the fuzzy recognition technology and provide a new criterion for the interlock of second harmonic by constructing the function subordination. Finally the simulation analysis is made through MATLAB, whose effect is better.

Abstract:
AbstractMitragynine is the primary active alkaloid in the leaves of the tropical tree Mitragyna speciosa, and goes by the popular names “Kratom”, biak-biak and maeng da. Mitragynine is increasingly seen in forensic toxicology casework including driving under the influence of drugs and medicolegal death investigation cases. The toxicity of mitragynine continues to be debated in the scientific community as advocates highlight its long history of use in Southeast Asia and testimonials to its benefits by present-day users, while opponents point to an increasing number of adverse events tied to mitragynine use in Western societies. Quantitative reports of mitragynine in biological specimens from forensic investigations in the literature are sparse and may be influenced by poor analyte stability and inadequate resolution of mitragynine from its diastereomers, which could lead to falsely elevated concentrations and subsequently render those reported concentrations inappropriate for comparison to a reference range. Over the course of 27 months, 1,001 blood specimens submitted to our laboratory tested positive for mitragynine using a sensitive and specific quantitative LC-MS/MS method; concentrations ranged from 5.6–29,000 ng/mL, with mean and median concentrations of 410 ± 1,124 and 130 ng/mL, respectively. Mitragynine presents an analytical challenge that requires a method that appropriately separates and identifies mitragynine itself from its isomers and other related natural products. We describe a validated analytical method and present a short series of case reports that provide examples of apparent adverse events, and the associated range of mitragynine concentrations. This type of analytical specificity is required to appropriately interpret mitragynine concentrations detected in biological specimens from forensic casework and assess its potential toxicity.

Abstract:
Research has always focused on identifying parenting styles adopted by parents of adolescents to find their association with parent-adolescent relationships, yet the experience of parenting a child at a sensitive age and stage is much more complex. This study aimed to explore the lived experience of mothers handling 11-15 years old adolescents and the troubles they go through. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 7 mothers of adolescents. Using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), two superordinate themes were generated i.e., apprehensions and parental self-doubt. These superordinate themes had 10 sub-themes. The results revealed that mothers go down memory lane and compare their child with their childhood and use certain strategies which fail. This leads to loss of control in the mothers and their associated apprehensions and helplessness leads them to question themselves in the maternal role. Abstract:
As issues of climate change become more apparent and intertwined with our daily lives, calls for action amplify. The causes and effects of anthropogenic climate change (rising temperatures and oceans, drought, wildfire, famine, refugees within the paradigm of late-stage capitalism) equate to a wicked problem. Yet, the problem is not humanity's alone. Living nonhuman organisms experience ecological shifts and disruptions also. Climate change requires a more-than-human perspective if we are to approach these problems ethically. HCI has become increasingly interested in the projects, visions, and narratives that investigate this complexity. However, research and pedagogy do not always emerge at the same rate; questions of how to teach this remain. In this article, we offer a description of and reflection on two of our courses from September-December 2020 and March-June 2021, offered at the University of Washington, Seattle, as examples of Value Sensitive Speculative Design (VSSD) in HCI pedagogy in the face of climate change. A collective group of 20 graduate and undergraduate students worked together over the course of two 10-week quarters in virtual sessions. Building on the Value Sensitive Design framework, we used speculative, discursive, and more-than-human concepts as an approach to expand the student’s ‘designer mindset’ and ability to notice complexity and richness in emerging and entangled relations. We discuss the struggles and troubles and conclude with future work &/or further design education.

Abstract:
Background: No validated functional assessments are available that are designed specifically to evaluate the performance and function of the athletic hip. Subsections of some validated outcome assessments address recreation, but a full assessment dedicated to athletic hip function does not exist. Current hip scoring systems may not be sensitive to subtle changes in performance and function in an athletic, younger population. Hypothesis: The patient-athlete subjective scoring system developed in this study will be validated, reliable, and responsive in the evaluation of hip function in the athlete. Study Design: Cross-sectional study; Level of evidence, 3. Methods: Based on the results of a pilot questionnaire administered to 18 athletic individuals, a final 10-item questionnaire was developed. Two hundred fifty competitive athletes from multiple sports completed the final questionnaire and 3 previously validated hip outcome assessments. Each athlete was self-assigned to 1 of 3 injury categories: (1) playing without hip/groin trouble; (2) playing, but with hip/groin trouble; and (3) not playing due to hip/groin trouble. The injury categories contained 196, 40, and 14 athletes, respectively. Correlations between the assessment scores and injury categories were measured. Responsiveness testing was performed in an additional group of 24 injured athletes, and their scores before and after intervention were compared. Results: The Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic (KJOC) Athletic Hip Score showed high correlation with the modified Harris Hip Score, the Nonarthritic Hip Score, and the International Hip Outcome Tool. The new score stratified athletes by injury category, demonstrated responsiveness and accuracy, and varied appropriately with improvements in injury category after treatment of injuries. Conclusion: The new KJOC Athletic Hip Score is valid, reliable, and responsive for evaluation of the hip in an athletic population. The results support its use for the functional assessment of the hip in future studies.

Abstract:
Lithium deposition on graphite electrode not only reduces fast-charging capability of lithium ion batteries but also causes safety trouble. Here, a low-field 7Li dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) is used to probe Li plating on the surfaces of three types of carbon electrodes: hard carbon, soft carbon and graphite. Owing to the strong Fermi contact interaction between 7Li and conduction electrons, the 7Li nuclear-magnetic-resonance (NMR) signal of Li metal deposited on electrode surface could be selectively enhanced by DNP. It is suggested that low-field 7Li DNP spectroscopy is a sensitive tool for investigating Li deposition on electrodes during charging/discharging processes.

Abstract:
For understandable reasons, global discourses around queer, feminist, and decolonial activism are unified by an emphasis on action, the agential, and the productive. Doing is what matters most, hence the critical focus of this special issue on how the doing gets done, or the forms that most effectively transmit action. However, these discourses risk reproducing the hard binaries by which political activity has historically been assessed, including success/ failure and resistance/passivity - in other words, they can unintentionally reinforce a racialized and gendered dichotomy between those who do things in the world and those who are simply undone by it. Such binaries further scaffold progress narratives that have long been weaponized against populations in the global South, founding good subjects, proper objects, legitimate politics, and viable futures in line with agendas set elsewhere. In this article, I turn to contemporary South African art to ask a different question: what might we learn from scenes of undoing instead? What expanded repertoire of actions, affects, alliances, and options emerges when we are sensitive to how decompositions, not just compositions, reroute agency, mediate relations, and make worlds? My article explores decomposition as a literal and figurative method in recent works by Zanele Muholi, Jean Brundrit, and Nolan Oswald Dennis, three South African artists who do not all align with notions of visual activism proper. But by placing pressure on the unruliness, vulnerabilities, and expressive limits of form and material, I argue that each artist usefully troubles the figure in whom normative notions of political agency are supposed to reside. In so doing, they sensitise their audiences to how vectors of precaritization and (in)capacity intersect today, unravelling the linear means-ends logics that conventionally underwrite theories of both art and activism.

Abstract:
A working order of a pipe fitting is a significant aspect in a trouble-free operation of technological objects in oil and gas production. It particularly concerns a safety valve protecting equipment against overpressure. In the field of high pressure, costs and temperatures the installation of pulse-safety devices is preferable. But, the complexity of their design and a substantial impact of a pulse valve sensitive element upon the whole correct work of a safety system in extreme conditions of operation increase design risks. With the purpose of their decrease there are considered possible circuits of the sensitive element standby in a pulse valve. By means of the method of reliability prediction on statistical models there are analyzed dependences of sensitive element failure probabilities as a spring and metal bellows in extreme conditions of operation. The conclusions on the application of a structural standby with a non-loaded reserve under definite conditions of operation and an optimum choice of structural materials for layers in multi-layer metal bellows are drawn.

Abstract:
When it comes to clustering nonconvex shapes, two paradigms are used to find the most suitable clustering: minimum cut and maximum density. The most popular algorithms incorporating these paradigms are Spectral Clustering and DBSCAN. Both paradigms have their pros and cons. While minimum cut clusterings are sensitive to noise, density-based clusterings have trouble handling clusters with varying densities. In this paper, we propose SPECTACL: a method combining the advantages of both approaches, while solving the two mentioned drawbacks. Our method is easy to implement, such as Spectral Clustering, and theoretically founded to optimize a proposed density criterion of clusterings. Through experiments on synthetic and real-world data, we demonstrate that our approach provides robust and reliable clusterings.

Abstract:
Abstract Facing the problem of having trouble building an exact mathematical model for aerodynamic heat simulation heating system (AHSHS), the conventional PID is considered to have the characteristics of simple operation, easy parameter adjustment, and high accuracy, but it is sensitive to external disturbances and has a poor anti-interference ability. In this paper, the fuzzy PID scheme for AHSHS is introduced to conquer the above problems. Firstly, the affiliation functions are constructed according to the system output errors and deviation variations. Next, the fuzzy rule table is designed, and the parameter autotune of PID is implemented utilizing both fuzzy inference and inverse fuzzification. Finally, comparative analysis through simulation verifies that the fuzzy PID scheme is more advantageous.
