Spears, Samuel Bruce. "A Study of Michael Praetorius' Megalynodia Sionia: An Historical and Stylistic Analysis and Selective Performing Edition." Scholarly Repository, 2009. http://scholarlyrepository.miami.edu/oa_dissertations/283.

Abstract:
Michael Praetorius was one of the most prolific and innovative Lutheran composers of the early seventeenth century. His Megalynodia Sionia ("The Magnificats of Zion") is a collection of fourteen Magnificats for use in Vespers services. The compositions in the collection present a series of complicated issues that modern editors and performers must unravel to be able to perform this music. The most common method for performing Magnificats at this time was alternatim, in which different musical groups alternated in performing verses. For eleven of the Magnificats in Megalynodia, only six of the twelve verses are supplied by Praetorius. Appropriate sources for the other verses must be identified. Also, there was a tradition in the Lutheran church of inserting chorales between the verses of the Magnificat on feast days. The chorales would be songs associated with the occasion, for example Christmas or Easter. Praetorius gives important instructions to prospective performers as to how these insertions should be chosen and performed. Eleven of the Magnificats are parodies of works by other composers, Orlando di Lasso in particular. Parody technique is the use of polyphonic music by another composer as source material for a new composition. It was a very typical compositional method of the sixteenth century. Lasso started a Continental tradition of using parody technique in the Magnificat; in this collection Praetorius follows in his footsteps. One must take all these issues into account in attempting to create modern performing editions of this music. The study culminates in performing editions of two Magnificats from the collection.

Karlsson, Ola. "A Study of Jupiter Trojans."

Abstract:
Jupiter Trojan asteroid dynamics have been studied for a long time but it is only within the last decades that the known population has become large enough to make other studies meaningful. In four articles I have been scratching the surface of the unknown Trojan knowledge space. Paper I presents photometric observations confirming a larger variety in surface redness for the smaller Trojans compared to the larger ones, in line with the groups in the outer main asteroid belt. However, the largest Trojans are significantly redder compared to the largest Cybele and Hilda asteroids. Paper II is an investigation of the Trojan discovery completeness. The analysis shows that all Trojans down to a limiting absolute magnitude of H=11.5 mag have been discovered. Missing Trojans in the almost discovery-completed section should have inclinations above the mean of the same group. The faintest Trojans are discovery biased due to orbit orientations similar to the Milky Way. Paper III is a general review of dynamical and physical properties of the discovery-completed sample of Jupiter Trojans found in Paper II. The two Trojan swarms are often treated as being equal, but are different in a number of details. Two known facts are that the L5 swarm is less rich, while the L4 swarm has a larger fraction of low inclination Trojans. Trojans are in general red objects but the mean redness is higher for Trojans which have not collided compared to Trojans in families. Paper IIII is an investigation of Trojan collisions, family detection and evolution. Collision circumstances were mapped using numerical simulations and recorded Trojan close approaches. Synthetic families were created and evolved numerically. The result suggests that the HCM family detection technique can find Trojan families even in a densely populated parameter space. However, interlopers cannot be avoided at any level but their contribution should be less than 30%. Synthetic families can be identified with backwards orbital integrations for times up to a Gyr-scale. However, there are discrepancies between real Trojan families and my synthetic families.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this work is to provide a metaphysical theory of properties and scientific laws. This sentence will require some unpacking. By a ‘metaphysical’ theory here, I mean a theory of what exists in the world. In this investigation I am primarily concerned with a theory of what properties there are in the world and the role they play in scientific laws. This may be contrasted with a linguistic or epistemic project, as it is not primarily about our language, ideas, or theorizing but rather about what is in the world itself. Properties are what we may pre-philosophically think of as the characteristics of an object: such as its height, weight, color, etc. Investigation may cause us to doubt whether some of these pre-philosophical properties are genuine in a metaphysical sense: whether or not the property is actually present as a feature of the world. By scientific laws, I mean the statements we make in the form of exceptionless generalities about the world within the sciences. Here I do not mean to evaluate how science comes about these generalizations, only that they do and how these generalizations may be grounded in a metaphysical theory of properties. The link between these two things: properties and scientific laws, comes about because our scientific laws prominently feature properties: velocity, temperature, charge, viscosity, etc. After a review of some of the theories currently proposed in the philosophical literature along with a treatment of some of the problems that arise out of these theories, I will propose a new theory. This theory, entitled ‘Constitutive Trope Theory’ is a form of a ‘bundle trope theory’ as it proposes that objects in the world are composed entirely out of particularized properties. However, rather than proposing a primitive relation that does the bundling, this theory will propose that, at least for the objects we are familiar with, properties arise out of relations between lower-level properties that instantiate them. For example, a mammal may exist because of the relationship between the organs that lead to its unique properties as a mammal. Those organs in turn exist because of relationships between their cells that lead to their unique properties as a particular kind of organ. And so on down the chain until we hit ‘foundational properties’: properties which are not dependent on any other properties for their existence. I will say very little about these properties as I do not believe that any such properties have currently been found and will argue that such theorizing is premature before such properties have been empirically identified. Following this account, I will consider some of the problems that must be overcome and some final considerations in favor of this theory over other competing theories of properties and scientific laws.

Hellwig, Heinrik Ziehm. "Why tropes cannot be metaphysically simple." Texas A&M University, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/85955.

Full text
Abstract:
A popular concept in contemporary metaphysics is that of metaphysical simplicity - the idea that an existent can have no parts. One reason for this is that the notion of a simple is crucial to discussions of the composition of single objects. Simples, if real, are the basic units that, when combined in various ways, make up all other objects. Keith Campbell claims that tropes - particularized properties - can be simple. In this essay I argue, against Campbell, that tropes cannot be simple. They are made up of at least two parts - a bare particular and a universal. In Section 1 I give an exhaustive account of what it is to be a simple. Then in Section 2 I discuss basic particulars and what conditions must hold for a simple to be basic. Then in Section 3 I explain the nature of tropes and sketch out the parameters of Campbell's trope ontology. In Section 4 I argue that simple tropes actually have universal properties as parts. In Section 5 I give a logical argument to prove the correctness of the argument in Section 4. Then in Section 6 I take up several possible objections to my claim that tropes are not simple and argue that each one fails. Finally in Section 7 I conclude that tropes need to have an individuating component as a part and remark that tropes' location is not sufficient to be this component. My final claim is that tropes are not simple and they cannot be basic units in any robust sense.

This thesis proposes a framework to model intervention in education systems using technology: the Learning Atmosphere. The motivation is to show that innovative learning with expressive technologies can happen even in economically disadvantaged regions, such as public education systems in Brazil, where our case studies took place. The contribution of the thesis is to explore ways in which mutual enrichment can be achieved through collective displacements of habits and mindsets taken for granted. The case studies demonstrate the importance and possibility of a powerful learning experience that builds up from the local culture and expertise, elements often disregarded in schools. Technology plays a central role, enabling diverse and innovative ways of working, expressing and building. In addition, it makes possible epistemological diversity, empowering of students and fulfillment to teachers, reinforcing the community's own livelihood. The core elements within the Learning Atmosphere are: -- Enhance the concept of generative themes using technology. -- Mix and match expressive media, especially low-cost technologies. -- Invest on relationship building and challenge established power relations. The legend of the Trojan Horse has the important role of warning us against the easy way into schools, the trivialization of ideas and the superficial experiences that do not change the praxis and mindsets in schools.

Abstract:
With this Bachelor thesis we’re trying to analyse the creation of heroes within video games, we’re researching what kind of tropes etched themselves into our industries heroes, problematize them and find out if they still have a place, a reason to still be applied in the creative process. With the help of Diffraction & Critical Design we attempt our own interpretation of the creative process where we challenge what expectations a player may have from a hero within the gaming world to understand if there is a solid reason for these tropes to exist or if you might as well set them aside.Through this designprocess we get a deeper understanding for the creation of characters but also knowledge of how to challenge and what needs challenging when it comes to stereotypes, norms, tropes within the gaming world. An understanding on how to connect with your players and encourage things like inklusion and awareness in general.

Recommendation systems (SR) have been widely studied in recent decades. The growth of the Internet and the consolidation of Web 2.0 have contributed to the emergence of various services such as social networks, blogs, collaborative platforms, among others, resulting in increased volume of information. This scenario has fostered the development of new research on how to use such information to mitigate limitations of SRs and improve their quality. The recommendation of movies became one of the most discussed topics in the literature about SRs. The industry also contributed to its popularity with the growth of streaming services such as Amazon, Netflix, iTunes, and Google Play. In such scenario, different sources of information in Web have been exploited to extract features to describe movies. The most common approaches use features such as genre information, movie direction, cast, etc. Other approaches attempt to characterize the story itself by means of information about the content of movies, its story structure, elements of narrative and characters. Such content can be represented by Tropes. Tropes are the elements that make up a fictional story found in movies, books, comics and other contents. In this work, we present a systematic study of Tropes, investigating its relevance to the context of a story and how they can be incorporated in Movie Recommender Systems. The experiments performed in this research suggest that hybrid models based on the combination of tropes with the films genres can improve the precision of the predictions about 3% in comparison to traditional methods.

Abstract:
Based on an average town too often disregarded but a highly industrial one -troyes and his knitting industry-our study will follow three paths. The first part, a historical analysis, deals with the development of the knitting goods manufacturing in troyes and the aube region, from its prosperous times (1860-1960) to its climax (1960-1976) and its crisis (1976. . . ). Wich industrial capital interests are now at stake and for what sort of industrial city? the second part deals with the possibilities of an economic alternative and its geographical consequences, relying on the volontary diversification implemented during the grouth period (1950-1975). The study of the bases and the changes to the troyes geography shows the lasting predominance of the textile industry in this zone. The third part deals with the industrial aspect of the town, despite its crisis, the industrial layout and the planning policy. Whenever an industry exists within the town, shouldn't the public authorities set the rules, means and goals of a comprehensive management policy for this industry? this study of troyes, the knitting capital in crisis, leads to a local diagnosis; but it also conveys more general ideas about the concept of an industrial capital, the position of a provincial channels in the national process of "disindustrialisation", and the relation of public financing with local development as it is operated by local governement

Abstract:
Though much research has gone into tackling the problem of creating interactive narratives, no software has yet emerged that can be used by story authors to create these new types of narratives without having to learn a programming language or narrative formalism. Widely-used formalisms in interactive narrative research, such as Propp's Morphology of the Folktale and Lehnert's Plot Units' allow users to compose stories out of pre-defined components, but do not allow them to define their own story components, or to create abstractions by embedding components inside of other components. Current tools for interactive narrative authoring, such as those that use Young's Mimesis architecture or Facade's drama manager approach, direct intelligent agents playing the roles of characters through use of planners. Though these systems can handle player interactions and adapt the story around them, they are inaccessible to story authors who lack technical or programming ability. This thesis proposes the use of Story Tropes to informally describe story components. We introduce TropICAL, a controlled natural language system for the creation of tropes which allows non-programmer story authors to describe their story components informally. Inspired by Propp's Morphology, this language allows for the creation of new story components and abstractions that allow existing components to be embedded inside of new ones. Our TropICAL language compiles to the input language for an Answer Set solver, which represents the story components in terms of a formal normative framework, and hence allows for the automated verification of story paths. These paths can be visualised as branching tree diagrams in the StoryBuilder tool, so that authors can visualise the effect of adding different tropes to their stories, aiding the process of authoring interactive narratives. We evaluate the suitability of these tools for interactive story construction through a thematic analysis of story authors’ completion of story-authoring tasks using TropICAL and StoryBuilder. The participants complete tasks in which they have to describe stories with different degrees of complexity, finally requiring them to reuse existing tropes in their own trope abstractions. The thematic analysis identifies and examines the themes and patterns that emerge from the story authors’ use of the tool, revealing that non-programmer story authors are able to create their own stories using tropes without having to learn a strict narrative formalism.

Abstract:
Subordination in the romances of Chretien de Troyes has been investigated in two different ways. First of all, a macroscopic study has been made to show how Chretien, in the twelfth century, used subordination in speech and narration in an inventive way. Then, this study has been completed by a microscopic approach consisting in analysing the various instruments of subordination represented by conjunctions and conjunctive locutions through statistical methods. Following this double approache, we have come to te conclusion that Chretien de Troyes was among those who have made the most elaborate researches on the possibilities offered by subordination

Abstract:
This thesis uses ethnographic research and interrogation of a number of discourses and tropes to examine the street-side performances of a group of young male kampung-dwellers in a part of urban Yogyakarta I call Kusuman. These young men, who refer to their group as the cah-cah (lads) are located between the socially defined roles of uncircumcised children and married heads of households, and have an ambiguous status in their communities. Among other lads in the same liminal phase they act out a series of personas in an attempt to construct meaningful identities. Their performances are re-iterations or re-interpretations of tropes to which they are exposed. The Javaneseness of wayang, elaborate politeness codes and stratified language, the Indonesianness of Pancasila, mutual help and military parades, and a Javanised mystical version of Islam form a background to their knowledge of self and society. These idioms also offer scope for playing out resistant readings, through reversal and caricature, as do the mystical martial-arts comics they devour and the trickster heroes of their folk mythology. Tourism is a major cultural and economic influence on Kusuman, and their repertoire of tropes is expanded by the performances of the "wild guides", English-speaking opportunists who seek sex, money and to "change their thinking with a western woman" among the many tourists passing through Kusuman.

Abstract:
This work presents a proof of concept of an Unsupervised Learning Trojan. The Unsupervised Learning Trojan presents new challenges over previous work on the Neural network Trojan, since the attacker does not control most of the environment. The current work will presented an analysis of how the attack can be successful by proposing new assumptions under which the attack can become a viable one. A general analysis of how the compromise can be theoretically supported is presented, providing enough background for practical implementation development. The analysis was carried out using 3 selected algorithms that can cover a wide variety of circumstances of unsupervised learning. A selection of 4 encoding schemes on 4 datasets were chosen to represent actual scenarios under which the Trojan compromise might be targeted. A detailed procedure is presented to demonstrate the attack's viability under assumed circumstances. Two tests of hypothesis concerning the experimental setup were carried out which yielded acceptance of the null hypothesis. Further discussion is contemplated on various aspects of actual implementation issues and real world scenarios where this attack might be contemplated.

Abstract:
As we focus on historical and topographical aspects at a time when the production of manuscripts enables us to write history, we realize how powerful were urban seigniories throughout 12th and 13th c. Troyes. The enlargement of the urban network, the drying out of humid areas, and the development of surrounding walls for a better defence, earls, among whom Hugues and Henri Ist, gave conditions good enough for the populations to develop. We owe to fiats such a patchy aspect of the city. More, residents within the community were freed from their corporeal domination. Besides, when the nobility became scarce, all the conditions were gathered and as a result the religious establishment extended its power. The way our city developed leads us to put the stress on the vital role of the Religious, helped by juridical incitements from the Comtes de Champagne in the second half of the 12th century. That way ecclesiastical institutions became urban seigniories that can be seen through a group or maps. After codification at the Latran Council, priests exercised rights over parishes the extension of which was an area limited by customs deriving directly from first dotation. The parish network structured the urban environment around churches and monasteries which held control over every street and every household. The regressive approach enabled the establishment of a balancing of the said parishes, helped in this by original cartographies. With patron saints inspiring the neighbourhood and processions following a well-delimited itinerary, the priests and their parishioners sometimes joined processions led by bishops, offering thus a living spirituality which is the perfect conjunction of religious time and civic time. It seems that the parish network structured and united some areas with the population living there, and by so doing gave birth to rallies full of religious fervour in this human and divine city

After settling on the island of Cyprus as the suzerain of the land in 1192, Guy de Lusignan first actions were to consolidate his authority and establish strong defences on his new holding. Cyprus has always been coveted and fought for: its geographical situation in the Mediterranean sea as well as its insularity provided a natural protection in front of its neighbours, but it never stopped the many attacks and raids. Ruling by the Byzantine empire until the VIIth century, the island is conquered by the Arabs in 645, and won back in 965 by Nicéphore II Bocas. Wars will be fought on the island during the VIIth century, but Cyprus will also be torn by revolts, particularly during the XIth century. Cypriots, Greeks for the most part, riot as a testimony of the bonds they feel for Byzantium and resent Isaac Comnène's usurpation in 1184. He will be the main cause of the war that will see Cyprus fall under Latin dominion in 1192. Abstract:

We Support Our Troops is a series of three mural sized prints in panoramic format. The images can be described as Rochester urban landscapes in which the commercial images of the billboards were replaced with images of Latin American resistance movements. The title is an appropriation of the United States pro-war slogan twisted into the support context of these movements. The prints are made in the contemporary and non-toxic printmaking technique 4 Color Inversion Intaglio-Type, developed by Master Printmaker Keith Howard. The Intaglio-Type techniques are the ones in which the photopolymer film ImagOn® is used.

A technical and historical approach is used in this written document. Included is a detailed explanation of the process with descriptions of the photographic equipment and software used for the image capture and creation of the landscapes. A step-by-step description of the 4 Color Intaglio-Type technique follows, from making the plates physically to the printing process. This technical walkthrough illustrates why this Intaglio-Type technique is the optimum fusion of the digital imagery with traditional printmaking techniques. Also, the description highlights the large format printing difficulties overcome in this research, with new possibilities yet to discover with the Akua Colors® inks.

The Latin American resistance movements referenced in this work are: The EZLN (National Zapatista Liberation Army) from Chiapas, Mexico; the APPO (Popular Assembly of the People of Oaxaca), from Oaxaca, Mexico; the EPB (Popular Boricua Army) or Macheteros from Puerto Rico; and the Piqueteros from Argentina. A historical overview of each of these movements is included.

Through this thesis I intend to shed light on the economic disparity between the United States and Latin American countries caused by their political relationship. To identify myself with a political movement, rather than to educate or criticize the status quo. In order to effectively make this statement, the images were carefully worked in terms of composition, color and content. These elements included in the large panoramic format are strong enough to entice the viewers to stop, look, enjoy and ultimately reflect on the meaning behind the images.

This thesis is about the rivalry between gautier d'arras and chretien de troyes. It also tries to resolve the problem of guillaume d'angleterre's autorship. It's based on a study of the literary sources, the spatial temporal, and narrative structure, the conception of chivalry and "fin'amor" and the aesthetic choices of each narrator

Abstract:
The whole works is based on figures of speech in the french poetry of xvi century from the corpus constituated by textes from the pleaid. The study of "expression figures" is inspired by the methods of semic analysis to emphasize their functioning, before the recourse concerning the notion of "incidence", as far as the guillaume linguistic is concerned. That permits to consider all the different discourse categories and also to determine all their syntaxtic correlations. Concerning the semantic phenomenon in the language, we call about guillaume notion of "subduction", that considers the "signe de puissance" which permits many effets of figurative meaning. We are interested in the second part about discursive modalities of "thougth figure". We consider the syntaxis and poetic facts in the setting of macro-textual structure. But those elements don't determine the unique and permanent point of the language. So the psycho-systematic notion is important added with "subduction" notion, which defines the textual contents from a semantic matrix. This is an essential factor which permits the semantic instabilities concerning the language. Thus, for these kinds of occurrence, we can succed in developing an adequat hipothesis that enables to explain discourse facts from a unique and single condition of language

Rodriguez, Joseph Paul. "Rise and fall: tropes of verticality in Middle English literature." Diss., University of Iowa, 2012. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/1387.

Full text
Abstract:
While excellent scholarly work exists on medieval space, especially in cultural geography, no book-length study of the conceptual implications of medieval vertical space exists. Attention has been lavished on the surface of the medieval world, while the heights go unseen and the depths go unplumbed. Using theories of space by scholars such as Henri Lefebvre and Jacques Le Goff, this project explores this lacuna through close reading of three late medieval English texts. The emphasis within Christian theology on a vertically-oriented model of virtue and the afterlife (ascending to Heaven, falling to Hell) was likely the initial reason for the prominence of verticality in the Middle Ages; the work of religious writers such as Bernard of Clairvaux and Walter Hilton set the stage for an explosion of the vertical imagination, as a blossoming of the incredible variety of what could be called "vertical thought." These ideas foreshadowed and accompanied similar developments in the secular arena, soon becoming an integral part of medieval life. By the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, closely interrelated--and strongly vertical--frameworks arose to structure complex concepts such as moral virtue, social class and kinship relations. The fourteenth and fifteenth centuries saw several major developments in what can be called "vertical thought." The evolution of Augustinian ideas of religion and morality led to a nuanced vertical hierarchy of virtues and vices, while the rise of the middle class helped define the explicit division of class into vertical tiers. A shift in conceptions of kinship, from a synchronous network to a diachronic tree of ancestry, affected perceptions of gender and family. Finally, the growth of parliamentary and urban political capital in late medieval England, especially in response to the reign of child-king Henry VI, led to a battle of wills between the powerful men of London and their king. These concerns with verticality were not limited to the realms of religious belief or temporal power, but manifested themselves in medieval literature and iconography as well. Highness and lowness feature in the plots, characters, and settings of many texts, and tropes of height and depth and rising and falling make frequent appearances textually and visually. Depictions of Heaven and Hell, for example, frequently make use of height and depth, and instances such as the Virgin Mary's ascension to Heaven or Lucifer's fall from Heaven to Hell involve explicitly vertical movement which parallels the perceived virtue of said figures. The Jesse tree, a genealogy of Christ, is usually illustrated as a tree emerging from a recumbent man's body, and reflects a newly vertical visualization of familial ties, while the concept of degree or scale, often represented as a ladder or stairs, is explicitly used as a framework for both moral virtue and socioeconomic status. Through discussion of three specific medieval tropes in literature and art-- the tree of Jesse in Chaucer's Merchant's Tale, the Dead Sea in Cleanness, and the giant of Lydgate's Triumphal Entry of Henry VI--this project attempts to demonstrate the importance of verticality in late medieval English literature from 1300-1500 and show how these tropes responded to and influenced changes in the way medieval, and modern, audiences perceived social class, kinship, politics, and religion.

Troyes is a bright artistic centre at the end of the Middle Ages. Sites are numerous. Religious buildings are ornamented with stained glasses. Who orders them? Who are the stained glass workers? From the investigation realized from the Archives and from the stained glasses, the donors, clergymen or rich persons of Troyes, opened up to innovation, remain closed to tradition. Church has a preponderant part in choosing iconography. Among the fifty-one identified stained glass workers, twenty-three can be said stained glass artists. Generally, their works are included in the sites. Probably without any statutes, their workshops are small structures. In case of important demand, the stained glass artists form associations. They worked too in numerous churches of southern Champagne. Reproduction of stained glasses, associations, absence of works property and existence of nets of donors enable to interpret the apparent homogeneity of numerous stained glasses.

Preslar, Stephanie. "Fanfiction: A Look into the Disruptions of Gender Identity through Tropes." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2021. https://dc.etsu.edu/etd/3885.

Abstract:
Fanfiction provides the unique opportunity to explore disruptions of heteronormativity through tropes. By exploring different fanfictions in the Soulmate AU, ABO Dynamics, and Mpreg tropes, the disruptions indicate a desire to explore gender, identity, and sexuality through queered characters. Male slash fanfiction provides the chance to examine the disruption of the heteronormative through the queering of male characters and placing them into situations that may embrace the feminine or a female-gendered experience. The situating of heterosexual male characters into queered roles allows an examination of how this disrupts canonical ideas of gender, identity, and sexuality. By reviewing the male slash relationships in these tropes, the narratives may explain why the disruption of heteronormativity seems so appealing to fanfiction authors and readers. Heteronormativity restricts exploration of new dynamics and experiences that fanfiction authors and readers may crave to investigate. Disrupting that heteronormativity presents new opportunities for experiences in areas that may receive underrepresentation.

Abstract:
This thesis examines how madness has been used in post-Yugoslav cinemas to facilitate thinking about experiences of the break-up of the SFRY throughout the 1990s and 2000s, its consequences and implications for the future. The study conceptualises post-Yugoslav film cultures as public spheres in which artistic and industrial practices are often combined to create meaning around the core themes of trauma and identity in post-Yugoslav cultures. Working with seven feature-length titles from a range of post-Yugoslav successor states (Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Macedonia and Kosovo) I illustrate how images of madness have been essential in the cultural processing of events of the 1990s. Whilst featuring individuals suffering mental instabilities and disturbances, and sometimes asylums or mental health institutions, I contend such films are not ultimately concerned – on a thematic level – with mental health, but instead focus on the use of such characters in a metaphoric capacity for engaging core themes of Yugoslav break-up, conflicts, and difficulties of subsequent transition. Using the semantic/syntactic approach to genre, I identify two common ways in which madness is used on a textual level to engage these core themes. The first of these, the ‘inside-out asylum trope of madness’, is concerned with the use of the asylum in films which assess critically the dominant political ideologies of the successor states in question at a time when political pluralism was not yet established by the transition process. Films discussed include Burlesque Tragedy (Marković, 1995), Marshall Tito’s Spirit (Brešan, 1999), and Kukumi (Qosja, 2005). The second trope is the ‘multiple realities trope of madness’ in which the presentation of diegetic reality on screen is adapted to reflect various conceptualisations of trauma and loss arising from Yugoslav break-up and transition. Here the films include Loving Glances (Karanović, 2003), Fuse (Žalica, 2003), Mirage (Ristovski, 2004) and Land of Truth, Love and Freedom (Petrović, 2000). Across the films selected, it is madness which ultimately provides a diverse pool of metaphors and images for an assessment of Yugoslavia’s traumatic demise and the ensuing process of picking through the debris of its ideology, cultural practices, values and ways of living for precisely what might be salvageable and what should be discarded.
