Abstract:
Solar energy is one of the important sources of renewable energy which can be a feasible alternative to fossil fuels. There are many works has been done in order to incorporate solar energy to everyday transportation including tricycle. However, most of the tricycle develops are expensive and not feasible for developing countries. In this study, a cheaper solar tricycle with more capability of utilizing the solar energy is designed for developing countries. The main content of the tricycle is Solar PV panel, Brushless PMDC motor, controller, and battery. The power transmission of the solar tricycle is also simple. It is found that tricycle serves 24% back up for running, by the solar panel. Also, the total construction cost of the tricycle is only 240$ with near about zero impact on the environment. This paper highlights the advantages of the dual mode of charging, including the economic and environmental feasibility of the tricycle.

Abstract:
Ecological transport systems must be provided with efficient vibration damping systems for the comfort and safety of the user. This paper analyses a shock absorption system that can be used in an individual three-wheeled transport vehicle. The vehicle has a complex structure, with an equal size of the front and rear wheels. This uniformity of dimensions between the rear and front wheels makes it easier to travel on rough terrain and manoeuvre in a folded shape. The tricycle allows aggregation with different agricultural equipment and can be used in small farms, greenhouses, solariums, meadows, orchards, etc. In this paper we simulate several models of absorption systems with different construction parameters. The strength of the system and the efficiency of shock absorption were taken into account. The best result of the simulation test for absorption systems will be the comparison with the actual physical model used by the electric vehicle.

Abstract:
The synthesis of the four acyclic trienes 11a, b and 20a, b is reported. The tandem macrocyclization and stereoselective transannular Diels–Alder reaction of acyclic trienes 11b (trans-trans-cis) and 20b (trans-trans-trans) were observed in the presence of Cs2CO3 at 85 °C to give tricycles 30 (TST) and 32 (CAT) respectively. However, treatment of acyclic trienes 11a (cis-trans-cis) and 20a (cis-trans-trans) under the same conditions yielded the 14-membered macrocycles 21 and 23, which were stereoselectively transformed at 250 °C into tricycles 22 (CST) and 24 (CAT) respectively in excellent yield. Keywords: stereocontrolled synthesis, macrocycle, tricyclic compound, transannular Diels–Alder reaction.

Abstract:
We report dependence of random lasing performance of directly spin-coated multicrystalline thin films of an organic–inorganic hybrid, halide perovskite CH3NH3PbBr3 (MAPbBr3), on different substrates. It was discovered that random lasing performance is strongly dependent on the surface energy properties of the substrate, which determine the morphology and crystallization properties of the spin-coated film, and will consequently determine its optical scattering and emission properties. Using indium–tin oxide (ITO)-coated glass, fused silica, and tricyclo[5.2.1.02,6] decanedimethanol diacrylate (ADCP)-coated fused silica as the substrate materials, we compared the spectroscopic response of the random lasers and thus justified the photophysical mechanisms involved. The modification of the surface properties of the substrate enables controlling of the MAPbBr3 crystallization and leads to the changing of the random lasing properties. The discoveries herein are also important for the construction of other types of laser devices, where the substrate effects should be considered during the design and preparation of the micro-/nano structures.

Abstract:
The synthesis and transannular Diels–Alder reactions of 14-membered macrocyclic trienes containing a methyl-substituted diene and a methyl-substituted cis-dienophile moiety are described. As a result of the dienophile cis geometry the 1,7-dimethyl A.B.C.[6.6.6] tricycles obtained from the Diels–Alder reaction have a different stereochemistry at the four chiral centers than similar tricycles that were the subject of the preceding paper in this series. Thus trans-syn-cis (TSC) tricycle 30 was the sole product obtained from the trans-cis-cis (TCC) macrocycle 1b. In a similar fashion TCC macrocycle 1d afforded only trans-syn-cis (TSC) tricycle 31. On the contrary, the transannular Diels–Alder reaction in cis-trans-cis (CTC) macrocycle 1a and trans-trans-cis (TTC) macrocycle 1c led to a mixture of the same four tricyclics (30, 32–34) but in different ratio. The above experimental results are rationalized by taking into consideration the interconversion of macrocyclic trienes 1a, 1b, and 1c. Pathways for these interconversions are also proposed.

Abstract:
Tricycle, the most popular mode of transportation in the countryside, has served as a means to articulate one’s thoughts. The signages posted on these usually express humor, wit, spirituality and sexual thoughts. The researchers believe that the language utterances displayed on these tricycles may be influenced by a number of social factors. The paper answered these questions: What are the signages found in tricycles traversing Tuguegarao proper? What do these signages in language reflect the lived world or thoughts of the tricycle drivers? Or their social background? How do these signages correlate to social factors? This paper used the descriptive design in examining the signages that were gathered from 100 tricycle driver respondents in Tuguegarao City. Analysis of the signages is strengthened through Barthesian’s sign systems. Drawing on the social constructionism, the paper highlights the following: First, tricycles have become a medium of Filipino expression where the vehicles communicate the drivers’ worldviews. The gathered signages reflected some Filipino values and traits such as optimism and fatalism; masculinity and machismo; religiosity and social cohesion; and hard work and cultural capital. Second, the paper holds that language may be understood by looking into the relationship between the signifier and the signified. The signages used by the tricycle drivers reflect not only their explicit thoughts, but also symbolic meanings and their habitus. Lastly, language has fulfilled its metalinguistic function as the signages were analyzed to show that these were representations of one’s cultural behavior.

Abstract:

Current wheelchair designs in developing countries create many difficulties for their users. In Kenya, wheelchair users are often unable to use public transportation, and thus are isolated and usually without work. This thesis outlines a feasible design for a retrofittable motorized module for a hand-powered tricycle produced and widely distributed throughout Kenya. There are many mobility aids that are similar to the Kenyan handcycle, which can also adapt the module design. By using this innovative module, users will be able to increase their range of travel and access areas where human-powered transport is not sufficient. This simple addition will improve the quality of life for the physically disabled user. This work will be presented to a wheelchair workshop summer 2008 in hopes to convert it into a feasible design for production. Increased reliable mobility will allow the disabled community in Kenya to apply for jobs, and even be afforded opportunities in micro-business for the first time. The design of the powertrain consists of a common motorized bicycle 2 hp engine and a two-stage gear reduction. The control system uses an analogous setup to that of a motorcycle. This control system is integrated into the layout of the chair. Three operation modes are possible with this design: hand-powered only, engine-powered only, or hand-powered with motor-assist.

Xie, Xiaoling. "Communications in construction design." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2002. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/7571.

Abstract:
Construction design has become an increasingly complex synthesis activity for which effective solutions depend upon co-operative participation by a number of people. Thus communication, including the integration of specialised knowledge and negotiation of differences between team members, is a vital process for collaborative design. A questionnaire survey was initially conducted to investigate communication issues and problems, which had been highlighted from a review of the literature, in current construction design. The results confirmed that communication among the different construction team members is often difficult although of paramount important to design outcomes. Based on these results, case studies have been carried out to gain further insights into communication issues and problems, and explore why and how they are caused. Through the application of multiple approaches, a model has been developed, which suggests strategies that may help participants communicate more effectively and ultimately improve the quality of construction design outcomes.

Delays and cost overruns are the rule rather than the exception in the construction industry. Design changes due to lack of constructability late in the construction phase generating costly ripple effect which create delay and disruption throughout the entire organization, are the largest contributors to the stated rule. In the building construction industry, of increased competitiveness, demand from many companies continued effort to develop new methods and tools, in which the design for quality, cost, construability and reliability play an important role. The planning and management of building design has historically focused upon traditional methods of planning such as Critical Path Method (CPM). Little effort is made to understand the complexities of the design process; instead design managers focus on allocating work packages where the planned output is a set of deliverables. This current design method forces design teams to manage their work on a discipline basis, each working on achieving their deliverable as dictated by the design program with little regard of the relationship with other disciplines and organizations. In addition, because Architect and Engineering firms view design and construction as two separate independent phases of work in project it makes it difficult to verify constructability in a design and create flow in the overall process. The goal of this study is to look at how aligning interests, objectives and practices based on lean fundamentals, during the earliest stages of a project, as a method of improving construction performance.

Chew, En Phin. "Superconducting Transformer Design and Construction." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Electrical and Computer Engineering, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/4977.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis first outlines the testing undertaken on a partial core superconducting transformer under open circuit, short circuit, full load and endurance test conditions. During the endurance test, a failure occurred after 1 minute and 35 seconds. During the failure, voltage dipping and rapid liquid nitrogen boil off was observed. This prompted a failure investigation which concluded that the lack of cooling in the windings was the most probable cause to the failure. Full core transformer and superconductor theories are then introduced. A copper winding transformer model, based on a Steinmetz equivalent circuit and a reverse design method, is described. A superconductor loss model which outlines the different types of losses experienced under AC conditions is used to determine the resistance of the windings in the Steinmetz equivalent circuit. This resistance changes with the magnitude of current and the strength of the magnetic field that is present in the gaps between each layer of the windings. An alternative leakage flux model is then presented, where the flux is modelled based on the combination of the reluctance of the core and the air surrounding the windings. Based on these theories, an iterative algorithm to calculate the resistance of the superconductor is developed. A new design of a 15kVA single phase full core superconducting transformer, operating in liquid nitrogen, is presented. The issues with building the superconducting transformer are outlined. First, a copper mockup of the superconducting transformer was designed where the mockup would have the same tape and winding dimensions as the superconducting transformer, which means the same core can be used for two different sets of windings. This led to designing a core that could be easily taken apart as well as reassembled. Construction of the core, the copper windings and the superconductor windings ensued. The process of cutting the core laminations, insulating the copper and superconductor tapes, and making the steel fasteners and terminations are described. The copper mockup and superconducting transformers was then tested under open circuit, short circuit, different load and endurance conditions at both liquid nitrogen and room temperatures. These test results were then compared with the those from two models. The comparison showed a significant inaccuracy in the reactances in the models. This introduced a correction factor into the superconductor model which ii made it more accurate. However, further work is required to explain and quantify the correction factors for the copper transformer model under different load conditions.

Access to a dynamometer is a useful tool for any electrical system where the motors must be selected from various suppliers and fully characterized. Motor suppliers usually provide a torque, speed, efficiency curve, but it frequently lacks complete motor characterization and includes motor controller losses in the total system loss. The dynamometer presented in this thesis is primarily designed for testing of high efficiency motors and motor controllers in the power and speed range requires for competition in the World Solar Challenge, a transcontinental race for solar electric vehicles. The testing specifications of a solar electric vehicles are uncommon among motor testing needs because it requires high torque, low power, high efficiency, and the only a small operating range. This thesis covers the design and construction of the dynamometer.
