Abstract:
This paper discusses the concepts and results from two contrasting types of water recycling initiatives in Australia. The first type of initiative is a centralised scheme based on local authorities recycling sewage effluent and/or stormwater in urban areas. A new urban subdivision in Queensland (Springfield) is provided as an example of such a centralised scheme, with uses ranging from dual reticulation, to public space irrigation, to urban lakes. The importance of strong public consultation and partnership is stressed for scheme success. A second example of a centralised scheme is an upmarket subdivision in Adelaide, South Australia (Mawson Lakes), where stormwater and recycled effluent are designed to supply in excess of 70% of the community's total water requirement. Scheme success is highly probable because of the ready adoption of innovative water supply alternatives by South Australians. The other type of initiative operates at a household scale (Healthy Home) and demonstrates that reinventing old ideas using new technologies can allow urban households to become largely self reliant for their potable and non-potable water needs, at least in high rainfall coastal areas. However, the cost effectiveness of this self reliance will require a substantial change in the sharing of savings from deferred public infrastructure costs. We include for comparison an analysis by Coombes et al. for the Lower Hunter region which clearly demonstrates that adoption of water sensitive urban design features, such as rainwater tanks in new developments, is not only more cost effective than traditional infrastructure solutions, but also allows the deferral of new urban water supply dams by the order of decades. We conclude the paper with the observation that advances in incorporating externalities into water development economics, the "trickle down" effect of new distributed technologies, and the growing desire by urban communities to live within the capacity of their regional ecosystems will probably ensure that reforms in the urban water and wastewater cycles will pioneer the way to genuinely sustainable and liveable urban communities in the near future. In short, the Ecological Footprint of urban development will be substantially reduced.

Abstract:
The aim of the experiments described in this paper was to identify determinate cultivars suited to production of fresh market tomatoes on raised beds in the inland irrigation areas of the south-west area of New South Wales from January to April. Cultivars that produce high yields of first-grade medium to large fruit, and are smooth, nearly round, firm and an even bright red when ripe are required. The plants should have good leaf coverage to prevent sunburn, and jointless pedicels to facilitate harvesting. The period of maturation of the fruit should be short to permit recovery of the crop with a maximum of 3 harvests. Ten lines including Sunny, a .reference cultivar with jointed pedicels, were evaluated at Richmond in the Sydney Greater Metropolitan Area and at Leeton in the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area, 1984-86. The lines were trickle-irrigated and mulched with black polyethylene film except at Leeton in 1985-86 when a trickle-irrigated, no mulch treatment and a furrow-irrigated treatment were included. The experiments showed that it is possible to produce yields of 50-100 t ha-1 of first-grade fruit with trickle irrigation. No significant advantage was obtained at Leeton in 1985-86 by using polyethylene mulch; however, the mulch largely eliminated the need for hand-chipping of weeds from among the plants. The visual quality of fruit grown at Leeton was excellent but total soluble solids levels were low, ripe fruit were unexpectedly soft, and sensory scores for flavour and general acceptability were only satisfactory. Overall, 2 cultivars that have jointless pedicels, Red Chief and Delta Contender, showed promise. A jointless hybrid line, HARU 83-148, which was bred at Richmond, warrants further evaluation. Some signs of incipient field chilling of fruit were observed at Leeton in fruit harvested after the first week in April.

The paper reviews the goals of stormwater management adopted in Adelaide and declares a focus on harvesting of stormwater to replace mains water in irrigating areas landscaped with grass, flower beds and shrubs. Four categories of catchments are recognised according to their levels of pollution production - roof runoff and “low”, “medium” and “high” pollution runoff surfaces. Four case study examples of systems involving appropriate treatment trains are described, each one delivering harvested stormwater suitable for irrigation. Two examples are given of large roof areas draining to gravel-filled trenches providing “passive” irrigation to grassed surfaces and two examples of runoff from ground-level surfaces supplying cleansed recharge to small aquifer storage/recovery schemes.

Abstract:
In 1995–96, a survey of soil samples from subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum L.) paddocks was conducted across Victoria, South Australia, New South Wales and Western Australia, to determine the distribution and the prevalence of races of Phytophthora clandestina (as determined by the development of root rot on differential cultivars), and the association of its occurrence with paddock variables. In all states, there was a weak but significant association between P. clandestina detected in soil samples and subsequent root rot susceptibility of differential cultivars grown in these soil samples. Phytophthora clandestina was found in 38% of the sampled sites, with a significantly lower prevalence in South Australia (27%). There were significant positive associations between P. clandestina detection and increased soil salinity (Western Australia), early growth stages of subterranean clover (Victoria), mature subterranean clover (South Australia), recently sown subterranean clover (South Australia), paddocks with higher subterranean clover content (Victoria), where herbicides were not applied (South Australia), irrigation (New South Wales and Victoria), cattle grazing (South Australia and Victoria), early sampling dates (Victoria and New South Wales), sampling shortly after the autumn break or first irrigation (Victoria), shorter soil storage time (Victoria) and farmer’s perception of root rot being present (Victoria and New South Wales). Only 29% of P. clandestina isolates could be classified under the 5 known races. Some of the unknown races were virulent on cv. Seaton Park LF (most resistant) and others were avirulent on cv. Woogenellup (most susceptible). Race 1 was significantly less prevalent in South Australia than Victoria and race 0 was significantly less prevalent in New South Wales than in South Australia and Western Australia. This study revealed extremely wide variation in the virulence of P. clandestina. The potential importance of the results on programs to breed for resistance to root rot are discussed. in South Australia.

Quantification of the relationship between evapotranspiration (Et) and yield is important for the analysis of irrigation practices. Wheat (Triticum aestivum cv. Avocet) was grown at the CSIRO Centre for Irrigation Research, Griffith, N.S.W., in 1982 with treatments of no irrigation and irrigation at 40, 70, and 90% depletion of plant available soil water. Irrigation significantly affected total dry matter, grain yield, and the yield components of number of heads per m2, number of grains per head, mass of individual grains, and harvest index. Plot grain yields, varying from 1.7 to 8.3 t ha-1, were closely related to dry matter at anthesis (r = 0.94) and number of grains per m2 (r = 0.99), indicating the importance of early growth on final yield. Regression analysis showed a significant (P < 0.01) linear relationship between Et and total or grain dry matter. The relationship of Et (mm) to grain yield (Y) (t ha-1) was described by Y = -2.010 + 0.016Et. Foliage temperatures were monitored at noon and showed promise as plant stress indicators. The mean differential between foliage and air temperature from jointing to late grain fill showed a strong negative linear relationship to grain numbers per unit soil area (r2 = 0.88) and to final yield (r2 = 0.86).

The soil moisture characteristics of undisturbed samples of Mallee soils, taken from typical profiles of the Riverland district neat Berri in South Australia, were determined. Samples were grouped according to texture and bulk density and, for each group, the moisture storage between matric potentials was derived. Over the usual range of soil moisture tensions (-0 to 40kPa) these showed only small variation between soil groups since, while moisture storage at field capacity and at wilting point does vary with texture; 50 to 60 mm/m is available between field capacity (-7 kPa) and the re-irrigation point (-30 to 40kPa) in all soils.

Abstract:
The overall objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of selected furrow irrigation models for field conditions in south-east Australia. The other important aspects which were examined during this study include: developing a methodology for estimating of infiltrating characteristics, assessing the applicability of the Manning and other similar equations for flows in furrow irrigation, investigating the variation of shape factor during irrigation developing methodology for estimation of recession time and exploring the sensitivity of the models to the input parameters. Field experiments were conducted at Walla Park in northern N.S.W. and on two selected paddocks at the University Farm, Richmond, in western Sydney,Australia, over a period of three years. The validity of the assumption that the shape factor of advancing water front during furrow irrigation varies between 0.7 and 0.8 was investigated using field data collected from irrigation events monitored in the study. It was found that the average values of the shape factor varied from 0.96 to 1.80 at Walla Park site, from 0.56 to 0.80 at Field Services unit paddock site and from 0.78 to 0.84 at Horticulture Farm paddock site. The value of shape factor was affected by uniformity of furrow cross section along the length, the value and uniformity of furrow slope, furrow length and infiltration characteristics of soil. This means it is difficult to recommend a typical value for the shape factor for a given field situation.The performance of the models for prediction of advance and recession characteristics and runoff were evaluated using different indices of performance. In general, it was found that the Walker-HD and ZI model was the most satisfactory for the field conditions encountered in this study. This finding can provide a basis for initiating work on developing design criteria and management strategies for furrow irrigation in south-east Australia.

Addendum on back page. Includes bibliography. Groundwater levels within the Willunga Basin, South Australia, are declining due to excessive extraction of water for irrigation purposes. An alternative source of water is needed to supplement the declining levels to ensure the sustainability of the groundwater system. A model was developed to evaluate the potential for using aquifer storage and recovery in conjunction with the surface storage of streamflow as a possible alternative water source. The application of this model to the largest catchment in the Willinga basin shows that sufficient streamflow is available to reverse the current overexploitation of the groundwater system.

Plantations provide a range of benefits, including the potential to ameliorate salinity and soil erosion, enhance biodiversity, and provide timber and wood chips. They are increasingly important because of their role in carbon sequestration (Adolphson, 2000; Anonymous, 2005; Jones et al. , 2005; Kozlowski, 2002; Paul and Polglase, 2004). Recent research has highlighted the connection between plantation health and soil fertility (Johnston and Crossley Jr, 2002). Within an Australian context there is little published data on the composition of the soil and litter fauna and their contribution to litter decomposition under plantation systems (Adolphson, 2000). The Albany Effluent Irrigated Tree Farm provided an opportunity to research plantation (Eucalyptus globulus ) soil flora and fauna communities, rates of litter decomposition and to describe the impact of irrigation (both mains-water and effluent) on these communities.

The task of producing policies for the management of Earth’s natural resources is a problem of the gravest concern worldwide. Such policies must address both responsible use in the present and the sustainability of those finite resources in the future. Resources are showing the adverse results of generations of exploitation, and communities fail to see the outcomes of past policies that have produced, and continue to produce, these results. They have not learned from past policy failures, and consequently fail to produce natural resource management (NRM) policies that support sustainable development.¶ It will be argued that NRM policy makers fail to learn from the past because they do not have a good historical perspective and a clear understanding of the dynamics of the complex human-environment system that they manage. It will also be argued that historians have not shown an interest in collaborating with policy makers on these issues, even though they have much to offer. Therefore, a new approach is proposed, which brings the skills and understanding of the trained historian directly into the policy arena.¶ This approach is called Applied Environmental History (AEH). Its aims are to help establish an area of common conceptual ground between NRM practitioners, policy makers, historians and dynamicists; to provide a framework that can help NRM practitioners and policy makers to take account of the historical and dynamical issues that characterise human-environment relationships; and to help NRM practitioners and policy makers improve their capacity to learn from the past. Applied Environmental History captures the characteristics of public and applied history and environmental history. In order to include an understanding of feedback dynamics in human-environment systems, it draws on concepts from dynamical systems theory. Because learning from the past is a particular form of learning from experience, AEH also draws on theories of cognitive adaptation.¶ Principles for the application of AEH are developed and then tested in an exploratory study of irrigation development that is focused on the NRM issue of salinity. Since irrigation salinity has existed for centuries, and is a serious environmental problem in many parts of the world, it is a suitable NRM context in which to explore policy makers' failure to learn from the past. AEH principles guide this study, and are used, together with insights generated from the study, as the basis for the design of AEH Guidelines.

Drip irrigation is the most common method of water application used in Australian vineyards. However it places physical and chemical stress upon soil structure, which may affect soil physical properties, soil water availability and grapevine functioning. Common soil types within Australian vineyards appear vulnerable to soil degradation and there is emerging evidence of such degradation occurring. Two South Australian vineyards (one located at Nuriootpa in the Barossa Valley, the other in the McLaren Vale winegrowing region) were used to examine evidence of altered soil physical properties due to irrigation. Significantly higher soil strength and lower permeability was found under or near the dripper in irrigated soils. There was also evidence that irrigation increased subsoil bulk density at Nuriootpa. It was uncertain how irrigation caused these changes. While sodicity was present at Nuriootpa, it appeared the physical pressures exerted by irrigation, such as rapid wetting and prolonged wetness, also contributed. To gauge the severity of the degradation at Nuriootpa, a modelling study assessed the impact of higher soil strength and salinity on grapevine transpiration. The SWAP model (Soil- Water-Atmosphere-Plant) was modified and then calibrated using soil moisture data from Nuriootpa. Simulations were conducted for different irrigation regimes and the model output indicated that degradation led to a reduction in cumulative transpiration, which was almost entirely due to higher soil strength. However the reduction was relatively minor and there was evidence of water extraction by roots in all soil layers. Hence the degradation, in terms of higher soil strength and salinity, was not considered a significant management problem in the short - term. Evidence of increased waterlogging and its consequences require further investigation. Roots were observed in soils at Nuriootpa with penetration resistance (PR) much greater than 2 MPa, which was thought to completely impede grapevine root growth. It was hypothesised that roots avoided the physically hostile matrix by using biopores or structural cracks. A pot experiment tested this hypothesis and examined the relationship between soil strength, biopores and root growth for grapevines. Grapevine rootlings (cv. Cabernet Sauvignon) were grown into pots with varying degrees of soil compaction, with and without artificial biopores. No root growth occurred when PR>2 MPa unless biopores were present. Pores also improved root growth in non-compacted soil when PR approached 1 MPa, which suggested biopores influence root growth in soils regardless of compaction levels. Therefore PR should not be the only tool used to examine the rooting-potential of a vineyard soil. An assessment of soil structure, such as biopore density and size, should be incorporated. In drip-irrigated vineyards, there is a possibility that degraded clayey subsoils could be ameliorated by manipulating zones of soil drying. At distances away from the dripper, drying events could generate shrinkage cracks that improve drainage and provide opportunities for root growth. From a practical perspective, drying events could be manipulated by moving the dripper laterally or by changing the irrigation frequency and intensity. The potential of this simple, non-invasive, ameliorative approach was investigated. Large, intact cores were sampled from Nuriootpa subsoil where degradation had been identified. Individual core bulk density was calculated using a formula that was derived by solving two common soil physics equations simultaneously. This proved to be an accurate and non - invasive method. Half the cores were leached with a calcium solution, and the saturated hydraulic conductivity (K [subscript s] ) was measured on all cores before and after drying to a matric potential of -1500 kPa. Soil drying led to a significant increase in K [subscript s], which indicated an improvement in structure through the creation of shrinkage cracks and heaving. Calcium treatment had no impact on K [subscript s], but that could change with more wetting and drying cycles. Results indicated the need for further investigation in the field, where different compressive and tensile forces operate. Harnessing this mechanism may provide an attractive soil management option for growers. The soil physical degradation identified is concerning for sustainable production in irrigated vineyards. Given the sites were representative of typical irrigation practices, such degradation may be widespread. While modelling suggested the impact of higher soil strength and salinity was minimal, these properties should be monitored because they may worsen with continuing irrigation. Furthermore, the impact of irrigation on subsoil permeability needs to be defined more accurately. An increased incidence of waterlogging could significantly restrict production, which was evident when overly wet growing seasons were modelled. If subsoil permeability was found to be significantly lower in irrigated soils, amelioration may be required. In this instance, the use of drying events to generate structure provides an option. Ultimately, the impact of drip irrigation on soil physical quality warrants further attention, and it is imperative to monitor the physical quality of vineyard soils to ensure sustainable production.

"Northern Territory, and possibly parts of the Pilbara, have been ‘seeded’ with virus which could result in epizootic activity when appropriate environmental conditions occur. Our conclusions could have important health implications as the population in north-western Australia increases through intensive agriculture, mining, service industries and tourism and, in the longer term, through possible effects of climate change (Mackenzie et al. 1993b; Lindsay and Mackenzie 1997). Furthermore, increased virus activity could be exacerbated as new irrigation areas are developed in the Wyndham–East Kimberley shire and the adjacent part of the Northern Territory. Finally, there is little doubt that the profound ecological changes resulting from the establishment of the Ord River irrigation area have provided ideal conditions for increased arboviral activity. These conditions are also suitable for other exotic arboviruses, such as Japanese encephalitis and chikungunya viruses, and exotic mosquito vectors, such as Aedes albopictus. Indeed an unusual strain of MVE has been isolated from the Ord River area, which was believed to have been introduced from the Indonesian archipelago (Mackenzie et al. 1991). "from Halls Creek in the East Kimberley region and Derby in West Kimberley in 1960 had demonstrated that subclinical infections with both MVE and Kunjin viruses had occurred in the human population (Stanley and Choo, 1961; 1964), there had been no reported cases of Australian encephalitis in Western Australia or in the Northern Territory. Unfortunately no baseline studies were undertaken on either mosquito densities or virus incidence before the completion of stage one of the irrigation project; indeed no studies were initiated until completion of stage two, the construction of the Ord River dam. While the Ord River irrigation area undoubtedly had enormous and profound effects on the ecology of the region, most of the evidence for increases in mosquito densities and waterbird populations is circumstantial. The climate in the Kimberley and adjacent areas of the Northern Territory comprises a relatively short (four month) monsoonal wet season during which heavy rainfall events occur and the major rivers extend across vast floodplains, and a very dry ‘dry’ season during which most of the country becomes arid and, in the latter half, even large rivers cease to flow. Results from studies at various locations, such as Billiluna and Halls Creek, suggest that MVE virus is occasionally epizootic in many arid areas of the Kimberley. It is probable, therefore, that the area in which the Ord River irrigation area was established was similar and, consequently, that prior to the irrigation scheme being implemented, MVE was also epizootic. Since 1972, our studies in the Ord River irrigation area and elsewhere in the Kimberley region on virus isolations from mosquitoes, on serological investigations of humans, animals and sentinel chickens, and on human cases of Australian encephalitis, have clearly shown that MVE virus is now enzootic in the Ord River area and probably in other foci such as the Derby and Broome areas of the West Kimberley region. Elsewhere, in arid areas of the Kimberley and in the Pilbara, MVE virus is epizootic and virus activity is probably initiated either by virus reactivation from desiccation-resistant mosquito eggs or by introduction through viraemic vertebrate hosts. The situation in the Northern Territory is less clear as insufficient data have been accumulated. However, it is probable that MVE is enzootic in the wetlands in the north of the Northern Territory, but epizootic in the more arid areas further south extending east from the Kimberley border. Since 1978 there has been a substantial increase in the number of cases of Australian encephalitis throughout the Kimberley and Northern Territory that cannot be ascribed to either an increase in population or a heightened awareness among clinicians. Thus, although based largely on circumstantial evidence, we believe that the Ord River Irrigation Area has had a profound effect on MVE virus activity and indeed has resulted in the virus becoming enzootic in the area. We also believe that this large, stable enzootic focus has provided the source for regular epizootic incursions to other areas of the Kimberley and adjacent arid areas of the Northern Territory, and to the Pilbara, and has probably established smaller enzootic foci in the West Kimberley. "Little was known about MVE virus, its vertebrate hosts or its vectors before the establishment of the Ord River irrigation area. Early serological studies by Stanley and Choo (1961; 1964) on human sera collected in 1960 from Halls Creek in East Kimberley and Derby in West Kimberley had demonstrated that the virus was circulating in these areas. However, no clinical cases of encephalitis had been reported, which may have been due to the small human population in the region prior to 1960, to a lack of awareness by clinicians, to low virus carriage rates in mosquitoes, or to a combination of these factors. Similarly, no cases of encephalitis had been reported in the Northern Territory. The first clinical case of Murray Valley encephalitis (now known as Australian encephalitis) occurred in 1969 (Table 8.1), a fatal case that was acquired by a tourist south of the Ord River irrigation area (Cook et al. 1970). Only limited information was available on the mosquito species prevalent in the Ord River area before 1972, although Culex annulirostris, believed to be the major vector for MVE virus from studies carried out by Doherty and colleagues in north Queensland (Doherty et al. 1963), was found to be present (H. Paterson, personal communication to Stanley 1972), and was the dominant species (H. Paterson, personal communication to Stanley 1975). Thus prior to the completion of stage one of the Ord River irrigation area, serological evidence had been obtained to demonstrate that MVE virus caused subclinical human infections, but no clinical cases had been reported. Between the completion of stage one and stage two, the first clinical case of encephalitis was reported, and limited information on the mosquito fauna was obtained but without details of mosquito numbers or population dynamics. 8.3 Studies on Murray Valley encephalitis from 1972 8.3.1 Early studies, 1972—1976 A series of investigations on the ecology of MVE virus in the Ord River irrigation area and on the effect of the completion of the Ord River dam were initiated by Stanley and colleagues in 1972. The major components comprised: regular mosquito collections obtained just before and immediately after the wet season to determine the number and proportion of each species at different sites, and for isolation of viruses; serological studies of animals and birds to investigate their roles as possible vertebrate or reservoir hosts; and serological studies of the human population, both Caucasian and Aboriginal, to determine subclinical infection rates and to assess potential risks. These studies yielded a number of important findings which have provided the basis for much of our knowledge of MVE ecology in north-western Australia. It is also interesting to note that the first confirmed case of encephalitis due to Kunjin virus occurred in Western Australia in 1978, and three additional cases have been diagnosed since, two from Western Australia in 1991 and 1995, and one in Victoria in 1984 (Table 8.1). Most of the cases of Australian encephalitis in Western Australia have occurred in areas distant from the Ord River irrigation area. Of particular significance was the spread of MVE virus from the Kimberley area south to the Pilbara and Gascoyne regions causing one case of encephalitis in 1978 and three cases in 1981. It is hypothesized that movement of virus to the Pilbara region in 1978 was due to an increase in viral activity in the West Kimberley area following heavy rainfall and flooding, and that with subsequent extensive cyclonic rainfall in the Pilbara region, viraemic waterbirds moved south down the narrow coastal strip, introducing the virus into Pilbara (Stanley 1979). It is probable that a similar mechanism may have occurred in 1981. Although there has been evidence (see next section), of MVE virus activity in the Pilbara region in recent years, there have been no further cases. Analysis of the cases of Australian encephalitis has indicated that Aboriginal infants, particularly male infants, are most at risk of fatal or severe disease (Mackenzie et al. 1993a). However, tourists and visitors to the Kimberley region (and Northern Territory) have also been shown to have an increased risk of disease. Sentinel chicken surveillance Following the 1978 outbreak of Australian encephalitis, a number of sentinel chicken flocks were established in the Kimberley area. Six flocks had been established by 1981 and the number rose to twenty-four flocks in twenty-two regional centres in the Kimberley, Pilbara and Gascoyne regions by 1989 (Broom et al. 1989; Mackenzie et al. 1992; 1994c). Each flock contains twelve chickens which are bled at two weekly intervals between November and June, the period of increased risk of virus transmission, and monthly at other times. The sera are then assayed for antibody to MVE and Kunjin viruses in our laboratory in Perth to provide an early warning system of increased virus activity. Initially sera were tested by HI for the presence of antibody, and positive sera were then subjected to neutralization assay to determine the identity of the infecting virus. A more rapid enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was introduced in 1986 (Broom et al. 1987), and more recently a competitive ELISA using specific monoclonal antibodies to identify the virus is being used (Hall et al. 1992; 1995). Sentinel chicken flocks were also established in 1992 in the Northern Territory to monitor MVE activity (Aldred et al. 1992). The sentinel chicken programme has clearly shown that MVE virus is enzootic in several areas of the Kimberley region, particularly in the Ord River area at Kununurra. Abstract:
Dry cooling towers are an alternative cooling method when large quantities of water are not available. Examples of the proposed applications are the enhanced geothermal and concentrated solar thermal (CST) power plants in arid or semi-arid areas, like south-western United States, Australia, western Asia, north-western China and the rest of the world. Natural draft dry cooling towers (NDDCTs) have received widespread attention because they do not consume water, have low maintenance requirements and cause small parasitic losses. Unfortunately, the performance of a NDDCT is severely reduced when the ambient air is hot, which is because the NDDCT is driven by buoyancy effect and relies solely on air to cool the working fluid. The present study introduces inlet air pre-cooling using wetted media, which combines dry and wet cooling. The wet cooling system only operates at high ambient temperatures to assist dry cooling. However, wetted-medium cooling introduces extra pressure drop which reduces the air flow passing through the NDDCT and thus impairs the tower heat rejection. To this end, this paper takes into account the trade-off between the wetted-medium cooling and the extra pressure drop. Early studies find that the performance of NDDCTs can be improved by wetted-medium evaporative pre-cooling when the ambient air is hot and dry. However, the pre-cooling enhancement is seasonal-dependent and is significantly affected by wetted media. To further investigate the effect of wetted medium type on pre-cooling performance, the current study simulates a pre-cooled NDDCT using five selected wetted media (i.e., three film and two trickle media) based on a self-developed MATLAB program. The innovations of the current study are: (1) two typical types of wetted media with the potential of evaporative pre-cooling are comparatively studied to give suggestions for future pre-cooling design; (2) the characteristics of wetted media suitable for evaporative pre-cooling of NDDCTs are summarized. The simulation finds that the media with high or low cooling efficiencies and pressure drops are not promising while those media with middle cooling efficiencies and pressure drops intend to produce much performance enhancement of the studied NDDCT. The film medium, Cellulose7060 with pressure drops of 28.6–272.1 Pa/m and cooling efficiency range of 44.7–88.5% is most promising for such pre-cooling enhancement. For the studied NDDCT, the critical temperatures below which the tower performance does not benefit but is hindered by wetted-medium pre-cooling are 28, 16, 30, 26 and 26°C for cellulose7090, cellulose7060, PVC1200, Trickle125 and Trickle100, respectively (ambient humidity of 20% and medium thickness of 200mm). The pre-cooling enhancements can go up to 100% by 200mm-thick cellulose7060 at extreme hot and dry climate (i.e., ambient temperature of 50°C and humidity of 20%). The simulation will give instructions for the design of pre-cooled NDDCTs.
