Abstract:
This chapter revisits trade-offs that qualitative researchers face when balancing the different expectations of area studies and disciplinary audiences. One putative solution to such trade-offs, mixed-method research, emphasizes the triangulation of quantitative and qualitative methods. CAS, as defined above, essentially encourages a different form of triangulation—the pooling of observations and interpretations across a wider array of cases spanning multiple areas. This kind of triangulation can be facilitated by cross-regional contextualized comparison, a middle-range approach that stands between area-bound qualitative research and (Millean) macro-comparative analysis that brackets out context in search of causal laws. Importantly, this approach relies upon an area specialist’s sensibilities and experience to generate awareness of local complexities and context conditions for less familiar cases. The examples of cross-regional contextualized comparison considered in this chapter collectively demonstrate that engagement with area studies scholarship and the pursuit of disciplinary knowledge can be a positive-sum game.

Abstract:
This chapter provides a review of research methods reported in work–family (WF) articles published in peer-reviewed journals between 2004 and 2013. Methodological issues addressed include sampling (sampling methods, identification of target and source populations, response rate, and comparison of sample to source population), research designs (time horizon, laboratory vs. field setting, and level of control), data collection methods, levels of analysis, use of multiple data sources, triangulation, and the use of objective outcome measures. When possible, statistical comparisons were made between the results of this review and those reported in an earlier review by Casper, Eby, Bordeaux, Lockwood, and Lambert (2007). Results show that multiwave as well as qualitative research designs have been used more frequently since the period reviewed by Casper and colleagues. Still, there is room for improvement in the methodological rigor with which WF research is undertaken. In particular, WF scholars are encouraged to give more attention to sampling-related considerations, and to more strongly consider the use of experimental research designs, data/measurement triangulation, and the collection of data beyond the individual level of analysis.

Abstract:
The introductory chapter outlines the research question, research methods, and structure of the book. The book aims at exploring the ‘grassroots’ dynamics of the Houthi conflict in its area of origin by giving full play to the welter of local driving forces. The research question is related to anthropology’s preference for small-scale networks, local communities, and other micro-entities. Based on a bottom-up approach and a triangulation of qualitative content analysis, qualitative social science methodology (ethnographic fieldwork) and digital anthropological fieldwork, the book offers an intimate insight in one of the world’s most neglected and misunderstood conflicts.

SI, Strong. Legal Reasoning Across Commercial Disputes. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/law/9780198842842.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book offers a novel, multi-pronged empirical analysis of legal reasoning in commercial disputes, comparing data across three different axes: the judicial–arbitral divide, the domestic–international divide, and the common law–civil law divide. In so doing, this text provides important insights into how judges and arbitrators resolve complex commercial disputes in both national and international settings and conducts important comparisons between different procedures. The study includes three different empirical methodologies: a large-scale international survey, a series of semi-structured interviews, and a detailed quantitative (coding) exercise. Results from the three research strands are cross-verified through various triangulation techniques and tested against conventional wisdom regarding legal reasoning. This work will help judges, arbitrators, practitioners, clients, and scholars understand how legal reasoning is conducted in different settings, thereby improving the practical and understanding of how commercial disputes are resolved.

Virole, Louise, and Elise Ricadat. Combining interviews and drawings: methodological considerations. Ludomedia, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.36367/ntqr.11.e545.

Full text
Abstract:
Framework: In qualitative research, drawing on a blank sheet of paper during the interview is one of the tools in the researcher’s toolbox. This technique is increasingly used in social sciences, but is still rarely included in research on social support for the chronically ill. Goals and Methods: The objective of this paper is to analyze the advantages of an innovative research method that uses both drawings and semi-structured interviews to study support networks of chronically ill patients. This method was used to conduct a qualitative research on changes in chronically ill support networks in France during the lockdown period (March-May 2020). The study triangulates three types of sources: 1. From chronically ill patients' oral accounts of their experience of lockdown, collected during 32 semi-directive interviews; 2. From the chronically ill patients’ drawings of support networks they were asked to make by the end of the interviews; 3. From their oral description of the drawn elements. Results: The drawing technique has several advantages: i. the playful nature of the drawing facilitates the degree of adhesion and interest in the investigation process, ii. it leads to greater reflexivity on the part of the respondents, iii. triangulation of the data from the narratives and the network drawings brings to light some unexpected results: it highlighted which types of support are valued or invisibilized and revealed the important support role of non-humans during lockdown. Conclusions: The complementary use of drawings and narratives allows a more detailed and complex qualitative analysis. However, this method requires investigators to take special precautions before, during and after the field work.

Abdul Hamid, Norsiah, and Halimah Badioze Zaman. The perspective of knowledge society in Malaysia. UUM Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.32890/9789670876375.

Abstract:
The Perspective of Knowledge Society in Malaysia presents the state-of-the-art of the concept of Knowledge Society. In particular, the focus is given to the definition of a Knowledge Society (KS), the KS model and its significant dimensions and indicators in the Malaysian context. The discussions are not only focusing on the Malaysias perspective, but also on the global initiatives to achieve the KS.The importance of knowledge and the rapid advancement of ICT were among the contributing factors towards the agenda. This book is a result of a doctoral research which aimed to develop and validate a model and indicators of a Knowledge Society from the Malaysian perspective. It examined the definition of a Knowledge Society (KS) and validated the KS model and its significant dimensions and indicators in the Malaysian context. To date, there is lack of available definition of KS in Malaysia, as well as in other developing countries; lack of consensus in terms of KS dimensions; lack of KS indicators and the need for a holistic model of KS.Thus, the research involves the analysis of the concept and definition of KS, and the development of a model of KS comprising significant dimensions and indicators in the Malaysian context.A mixed approach methodology known as the Iterative Triangulation method was adopted which involved three phases. Thus, a number of experts were involved and in-depth analyses were conducted to achieve the objectives. This book may be used by policy makers to plan the development of a KS to meet the goals to be a developed nation by the year 2020.
