Abstract:

Abstract:
The Elatina Fm. records the younger Cryogenian ice age in the Adelaide Rift Complex (ARC) of South Australia, which has long-held the position as the type region for this low-latitude glaciation. Building upon a legacy of work, we document the pre- and syn-glacial sedimentary rocks to characterize the dynamics of the glaciation across the ARC. The Elatina Fm. records an array of well-preserved glacial facies at many different water depths across the basin, including ice contact tillites, fluvioglacial sandstones, dropstone intervals, tidal rhythmites with combined-flow ripples, and turbidites. The underlying Yaltipena Fm. records the pro-glacial influx of sediment from encroaching land-based ice sheets. The onset of the glaciation is heralded by the major element ratios (Chemical Index of Alteration) of the pre-glacial facies across the platform that show a reduction in chemical weathering and a deterioration in climate towards the base of the Elatina Fm. The advancing ice sheets caused soft-sediment deformation of the beds below the glacial diamictite, including sub-glacial push structures, as well as sub-glacial erosion of the carbonate unit beneath. Measured stratigraphic sections across the basin show glacial erosion up to 130 m into the carbonate platform. However, δ13C measurements of carbonate clasts within the glacial diamictite units were used to assess provenance and relative timing of δ13C acquisition, and suggest that at least 500 m of erosion occurred somewhere in the basin. Detrital zircon provenance data from the Elatina Fm. suggest that glacial sediment may have been partially sourced from the cratons of Western Australia and that the Whyalla Sandstone, even if stratigraphically correlative, was not a sediment source. The remainder of the Elatina Fm. stratigraphy mostly records the deglaciation and can be divided into three facies: a slumped sandstone, dropstone diamictite, and current-reworked diamictite. The relative sea level fall within the upper Elatina Fm. requires that regional deglaciation occurred on the timescale of ice sheet – ocean gravitational interactions (instant) and/or isostatic rebound (~104 years). Structures previously interpreted as soft-sediment folds within the rhythmite facies that were used to constrain the low-latitude position of South Australia at the time of the Elatina glaciation are re-interpreted as stoss-depositional transverse ripples with superimposed oscillatory wave ripples. These combined-flow ripples across the ARC attest to open seas with significant fetch during the initial retreat of local glaciers. In addition, this interpretation no longer requires that the magnetization be syn-depositional, although we have no reason to believe that the low-latitude direction is a result of remagnetization, and positive reversal tests and tectonic fold tests are at least consistent with syn-depositional magnetization. Together, these paired sedimentological and chemostratigraphic observations reveal the onset of the glaciation and advance of the ice sheet from land to create a heavily glaciated terrain that was incised down to at least the base of the pre-glacial Trezona Fm.SOMMAIRELa Formation d’Elatina représente la phase précoce de l’âge glaciaire du Cryogénien de l’Adelaide Rift Complex (ARC) dans le sud de l’Australie, région qui a longtemps été la région type de cette glaciation de basse latitude.

Abstract:
The article is an expanded description of three 18th — 19th c. Old Believers’ origin chanting manuscripts from the collection of the Andrey Rublev Museum demonstrated at the anniversary Avvakum exhibition at the Museum of Russian Icon. These manuscripts — “Holidays”, “Octoechos and Obikhod” and “Trezvony” represent two branches of the Old Believers — accepting priesthood (popovtsy) and priestless (bespopovtsy) which in regards to singing books affects the editions of the text: so called “true-speech” and “separate-speech”. The author speaks about the contents of the books, their repertoire and its musical characteristics, specific singing concepts and terms found in them. The manuscript of the Pomor “Trezvons” is examined in more detail including the сomprehensive list of services containinig a large number of Russian saints feasts the features of rites with a short and a complete composition of chants genres. To illustrate the unique artistic design of the manuscripts the article publishes photographs of various colored handdrawn headpieces, frames, drop caps, flowers on the page margins, a miniature of the seated St. John of Damascus and a sample of hook notation. From the Appendix of Guslitsy “Obikhod” of 1809 is given a musical example of the chant “The monk is coming from the monastery” which represents a translation of the hook znamenny notation into the modern one. It is designated in the manuscript as “Examples of odes” and is an example of a non-liturgical educational genre, where each new line is sung to the motive of one of the eight odes of the znamenny chant. To make it easier to memorize the melodies a subtext was invented, telling a story reminiscent to a folk song or a spiritual verse. So, in the Old Believers singing books the ancient Russian tradition of monophonic znamenny singing in which an archaic melody, considered sacred and not made by hands is combined with folk elements of paralyturgical genres and decorative design of manuscripts and persists.

The Novena of St. Anthony in Pradoso, is an annual celebration that takes place between June 1 and June 13. Since its preparation to the conclusion of the celebration are employed traditional knowledges and techniques, which are shared by the community. Such knowledges, built over generations, associated with popular religion, form it into the educational processes that build, through orality, practices and experiences of everyday life, the sense of belonging. An analysis of scenes, knowledges and subjects involved in the celebration, shows the form and content of practices capable of building symbolic territories of belonging. Thus, the Novena of St. Anthony in Pradoso, while an human territoriality, is designed as a locus of learning of belonging, reaffirming community values such as solidarity, service, brotherhood, integration, among others. While empirical reference for an analysis of the importance of belonging, the Novena of St. Anthony in Pradoso, offers subsidies for the production of knowledge, focused on understanding the need for a reconnection of technical and humanistic knowledges

Abstract:

High magnitude δ13C shifts (>12‰) restricted to Neoproterozoic carbonate successions are widely interpreted to reflect a vastly different regime of carbon cycling that changed into the Phanerozoic. Despite isotopic values in the Neoproterozoic being anomalous, they are considered to reflect the δ13C composition of sea water because the values appear to be reproducible, change systematically, and occur in a similar stratigraphic interval relative to overlying glacial intervals within successions in different basins. The relation to a primary marine origin of the isotopic values in carbonates is key to these isotopic excursions providing constraints on the global carbon mass balance during the Neoproterozoic, that are central to present models of the ancient carbon cycle. The Trezona Formation in the Central Flinders Ranges in South Australia records a large (~9‰) pre-Marinoan glacial δ13C excursion widely correlated to basins globally and termed the ‘Trezona Anomaly’. This study examines the depositional setting of the Trezona Formation using outcrop exposures, petrographic studies, and stable isotope geochemical data and investigates the origin of δ13C values with respect to lithological and diagenetic controls. δ13C and δ18O data was collected using Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry. Field observations reported here are inconsistent with an open marine or tidal origin for the Trezona Formation. Sequence boundaries in the form of paleosols and fluvial deposits at the basal and upper contacts respectively indicate that it represents its own discrete depositional cycle. This is contrary to previous interpretations that the Trezona Formation records a broad shallowing upwards trend of widespread marine shales of the underlying Enorama Formation into the overlying glacial sediments of the Elatina Formation. Evidence of frequent desiccation throughout the basal half of the Formation and the limited spatial distribution of the Trezona Formation is suggestive of a consistently shallow, restricted marine or periodically lacustrine depositional setting. Covariant and diverging relationships between δ13C and δ18O values in stratigraphic profiles suggest a lithological relation to isotope values. Furthermore, petrographic data suggests that intervals of the Trezona Formation housing strongly negative δ13C values (<-5‰) may have undergone digenetic recrystalisation. A diagenetic origin for these values makes them typical of meteorically altered successions in the Phanerozoic, and removes the need for currently popular global biogeochemical models calling for dramatic differences in Precambrian carbon cycling. These observations also imply that the Trezona Formation is not a record homogeneous, open marine δ13C values and is therefore inappropriate as a correlation of chemostratigraphic events. Rather, it likely records the common alteration of coastal or lacustrine carbonates responding to exposure and alteration during sea-level fall coinciding with the Marinoan glaciation

Abstract:
Dolores and Peter´s Memories in The Hiding Place (2000) by Trezza Azzopardi and Mrs Dalloway (1925) by Virginia Woolf inevitably leads to reflections on memory. When considering the term “memory” one relates it to the brain, the most mysterious organ human beings possess, with its neurons and synaptic connections involved in the process of remembering. We may have studied three stages of memory –encoding, storage and retrieval and know about short term and long term memory.1 We generally hear people referred to as having a “good” memory or a “bad” memory (with respect to the amount of precise information they can recall at a given moment) and we must have found ourselves at times saying we had something “on the tip of our tongue” but still not have been able to produce it immediately. Memory has always been intriguing. Throughout time different disciplines have tried to account for the structures, processes and functions of memory, and there have been many important contributions to its understanding. However, much is still to be learned and remains a mystery to this day.

Abstract:
The visual system is trichromatic for small, centrally fixated fields and high (photopic) light intensities. For such conditions, color matching requires three primary lights, because of the three kinds of cone photoreceptors involved. When light intensities are low (scotopic), color matching reduces to brightness matching, and vision becomes monochromatic. At scotopic light intensities, which are not enough to excite cones, vision is mediated by rods; on the other hand, photopic light intensities are high enough to saturate the rods so that only cones contribute to color matches. But what of light intensities (mesopic) that are above the cone threshold but below the rod-saturation intensity? If rods and cones participate together in mesopic vision, shouldn't mesopic color matches require four primary lights instead of three? To address this question, this paper first shows the possibility of a full tetrachromatic matching space by demonstrating that the rod spectral-sensitivity function is linearly independent of a set of color-matching functions for the cones. Secondly, the mathematical conditions for convergence of Trezona's [1] iterative tetrachromatic matching experiment are derived and shown to agree with the actual conditions of the experiment. This step is intended to show that some experimental results are consistent with the formal discussion. Finally, a simple diagram is introduced that represents confusion loci in a reduced "matching space" of rod versus cone stimulation. The topology of this diagram is used to show how mesopic trichromacy is possible.

Abstract:
Over the last fifteen years, various types of semiconductor electro-absorption modulators have been fabricated and analysed. The potential use of such devices in photonic switching fabrics and inter-chip interconnections has provoked numerous studies of their performance capabilities and design trade-offs [1,2]. Of particular concern has been the impossibility, until recently, to manufacture fast 2-D multiple quantum well (MQW) phase modulator arrays. Trezza and coworkers reported a π-phase change in a reflection-mode vertical cavity asymmetric multiple quantum well [3], in which the absorption variation induced by an external applied field causes a change in the dominant role played by one of the cavity minors. Moreover, the device, named a phase-flip modulator, is designed so that no change in throughput is induced by the bias voltage. The π phase change at constant reflectivity requires a careful cavity design and the precise determination of the operating wavelength and voltage swing. A systematic study demands the implementation of a tolerance methodology. Results, based on such a methodology, will be presented that analyse which parameters are in achieving the best overall device performance, the optimum operating conditions and the higher degree of robustness (the tolerance) to the variations in device characteristics.
