Abstract:
As trees age, they become ecologically richer and more full of life. The process of a tree, wood or forest becoming ‘ancient’, however defined, involves a vast and subtle web of relations – among the trees themselves, with other organisms, with the wider landscape and with human beings. A single tree can provide a vast array of habitats which are an integral part of the complex co-evolutionary relationships evolved over its lifetime and later during its sometimes long afterlife. From ancient times until today, trees and woods have inspired artists, writers and scientists; they have shaped cultures and reverberated through belief systems. Yet worldwide, forest cover has declined dramatically over the last 1,000 years, and what remains has been more or less altered from its original condition. Today, ‘virgin forests’ are only to be found at a few sites unreachable by humans, and even then they are affected by climate change, atmospheric pollution and species extinctions. The aim of this book is to help an understanding of the web of connections relating to ancient trees and woodlands, and to offer techniques to ensure effective conservation and sustainability of this precious resource. This book considers the key issues from a range of different aspects and varied geographical locations, beginning with fundamental concepts and reflecting on the strengths and limitations of the idea of ancient trees. Individual chapters then deal with cultural heritage, the archaeology of trees, landscape history, forest rights, tree management, saproxylic insects, the importance of dead wood, practical conservation and monitoring, biodiversity, and wood pasture among many other themes. Fresh perspectives are put forward from across Europe as far as Turkey, as well as Great Britain. Overall, given the urgent need to discover, understand, conserve and restore ancient woodlands and trees, this publication will raise awareness, foster enthusiasm and inspire wonder.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Chapter ten focuses on botanical thought of the Middle Ages in the Roman, Eastern and Islamic Empires when herbals devolved from practical field guides to decorative status symbols, and Dioscorides developed his classifications of sex in plants according to anthropomorphic criteria, such as hardness or softness. Dioscorides’ authority endured into the sixteenth century. Sources including The Book of Idols and the Ethiopian Book of Enoch inform the discussion of pre-Islamic vegetation goddesses Allat and Al-’Uzza, and the Satanic Verses. Zakariya Muhammad Qazwini suggested the palm was human-like, with two sexes and “a sort of copulation” required for fruit production. The Quranic story of Mary and the date palm reprised “The Cherry Tree Carol,” both evidencing her assimilation of pagan goddesses. After the Council of Ephesus’s sanction of the cult of the Virgin as Theotokos, her cult bourgeoned. Her imagery often centered on gardens, fruits, and flowers symbolizing her purity.

Abstract:
Christmas is an unrivalled annual celebration. This volume traces its history from the early Church’s decision to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ on 25 December through the medieval period and all the way into the twenty-first century. It explores Christmas around the world, including in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, as well as Europe and North America. It also presents the variety of ways that worshipping communities observe the festival from Roman Catholics to Reformed Protestants. All of the features of the Nativity Story are covered from the Holy Family to the Magi and the Star, as are the biblical and theological unpinning of Christmas, including the doctrines of the Incarnation and the Virgin Birth. Carols and music, as well as paintings, literature, and film and television, are all treated by experts, as are the more cultural aspects of the season ranging from Santa Claus to Christmas trees to food and drink. Finally, societal issues related to the law, secularity, commercialism, and consumerism are addressed as well. In other words, this volume aims at comprehensive treatment of Christmas across time, space, cultures, and the varieties of religious and secular contexts.
