Abstract:
This research work examines trends that affect information technology in the Czech retail banking. The main objective is the evaluation of IT trends adoption in retail banking. To achieve this goal, interviews with IT professionals in the Czech retail banks and IT consultants in the field of banking were taken. Specific objectives were identification and consolidation of IT trends in the banking sector through the analysis of relevant sources identified in the research. Consolidation is using the methodology mentioned in book Trend Management Toolkit by author Kjear. Analysis of IT trends in banking aimed to describe the identified trends and their position on the Hype Cycle curve. First part of work consist of introduction, goals, assumptions, limitations and expected benefits, specifying the current state by conducting research. The theoretical part describes the key bank characteristics and trends influencing retail bank sector. Based on an analysis of selected reports work identifies key IT trends in banking and their consolidation. The practical part discuss the results of in-depth interviews conducted with people with long lasting experience in IT in banks. Usefulness of the results can be seen in the identification of current IT trends in banking and the creation of an analytical procedure for finding the most significant trends of all currently mentioned. Furthermore, in evaluating the state of IT adoption trends, which is currently expected by retail banks and considering possible further steps in this area. Lindholm, Johnsson Anton. "What drives e-business trends? : With a focus on customer oriented trends and service digitization." Thesis, Jönköping University, JIBS, Business Informatics, 2008. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hj:diva-1222.

Full text
Abstract:

In this thesis I am going to investigate the trends within e-business, what it is that drive

these trends and why these drivers are of such importance. I chose this subject since I have

found it very interesting and useful in my career because of the importance it embraces in

today’s business world.

The aspect of e-commerce has changed a lot lately to in the beginning of the 1990s be

about being present on the Internet with a web site, to being about transactions, meaning

to buy or sell through digital media at the end of the 1990s, to today be about being used to

make profitability – an era that can be called e-business, because it is now that e-business

finally gets its big breakthrough and starts to be recognized as a necessity for companies to

survive. As long as e-business has existed so have trends in the same matter. What will be

the trends of e-business in the future? Impossible to say of course, but by taking today’s

major trends into consideration, and to look at what drives these trends might have, will

make it possible to get a glimpse of the future of this relatively new business phenomenon

called e-business.

To get the best result possible of my thesis I have made a wide literature study in the subject

by reading and examine accurate literature and articles as well as carried out interviews

with different IT-gurus and other persons that is thought to withhold a lot of information

about my chosen subject.

I have focused on two major trends being customer oriented trends and service digitization.

Customer oriented trends are trends which have their focus towards customers such

as customer service, offering more product choices and to have integrated solutions. Service

digitization is the transformation of paper-based transactions into the new integrated

multi-channel processes. The driver I have found of most significance and therefore focused

on is customers. Customers are important as drivers since they have adopted a new

role in the business process. Customers nowadays have found a way to let their voices to

be heard. With the help of blogs, social networks and wikis over the Internet they can express

their feelings and suggestions about products as well as companies and have so to say

gained a more active role as customers to also taking part of the development. This voice

of the customers is highly essential to listen to if you as a company want to survive in a

business world where customers get more and more power.

After finishing this study I came up with the importance of service, and especially customer

service as well of personalization and customization (to personalize the shopping experience

for the customer). Another important conclusion is the importance of customers,

both as trends to focus on, as well as drivers behind these trends.

Rumbold, Steven T. "Stratospheric temperature trends." Thesis, University of Reading, 2007. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.501338.

Full text
Abstract:
The stratospheric temperature trend has only been measurable on a global scale since the late 1970's during the satellite era. In the global annual mean, the stratosphere demonstrates a cooling over this time. This cooling is much greater than the warming at the Earth's surface and is therefore an important signature of climate change. Although models agree with the observations in terms of the sign of the temperature trend, there is inconsistency in the magnitude. In addition to the overall trend, the stratospheric temperatures demonstrate many scales of variability. One possible cause of this variability is the change in flux from the Sun over the 11-year solar cycle. By use of realistic solar cycle flux perturbations, the solar maximum minus minimum annual mean result displays a peak response at the stratopause with a magnitude of 1.6 K, an equatorial middle stratosphere minimum and a second peak in the lower stratosphere. This is in agreement with a previous multiple regression analysis of the ERA-40 temperatures The result of this study appears different to a multiple regression of the solar cycle in satellite observations alone; however, when the results are degraded to the resolution of the satellite channels, the results are more similar and thus the broad weighting functions axe a large contributor to the discrepancy. The same modelling techniques are used to evaluate the temperature change associated with anthropogenic-induced carbon dioxide and ozone changes. A first order time-varying response is established and then weighted to each of the satellite channels. When compared to the observations, it is found that the addition of the solar cycle reduces the discrepancy compared to neglecting the solar response in most satellite channels. Additionally, the associated radiative forcings across the tropopause are also calculated.

Abstract:
Palaeontological data are essential for determining patterns of biological diversity through geological time, enabling the investigation of important macroevolutionary events such as mass extinctions and explosive radiations. Most studies utilise proxies of taxonomic diversity. A more complex undertaking is to assess patterns of morphological variety (disparity) through time, revealing the manner in which groups evolved through their ‘design space’. Many published studies indicate clades tend to reach their maximum disparity early in their evolutionary history. Whether this is a real biological pattern has yet to be tested. Chapter 1 tackles the evolution of disparity in metazoans across the Phanerozoic. The results of a meta-analysis of disparity in 98 extinct clades indicate early high disparity is the most prevalent pattern across the Phanerozoic but finds no clear trends through the Phanerozoic. Mass extinction ended clades were the exception, tending to result in late high disparity. Chapters 2-4 focus on the clade Bivalvia for disparity and diversity analysis. Bivalves are ecologically and taxonomically diverse and have an excellent fossil record but have not been scrutinised using the latest diversity techniques, and have been untouched by disparity analysis. Chapter 2 uses the most up to date stratigraphic ranges and techniques to revise the bivalve Phanerozoic diversity curve. The results show bivalve Phanerozoic diversity is robust to the sampling and fossil record biases examined. Chapter 3 uses data provided as part of collaboration between Martin Hughes, Dr Joseph Carter (University of North Carolina) and Dr Matthew Wills (University of Bath) to address the disparity of bivalves across the Palaeozoic. The results find disparity rises across time but not decreased by mass extinctions. Chapter 4 conducts the first large scale analysis of disparity across latitude. The results find that bivalve disparity across latitude is unchanging and stable compared to the steep gradient of bivalve diversity.

Stadler, Kevin. "Direction and directedness in language change : an evolutionary model of selection by trend-amplification." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/22980.

Full text
Abstract:
Human languages are not static entities. Linguistic conventions, whose social and communicative meaning are understood by all members of a speech community, are gradually altered or replaced, whether by changing their forms, meanings, or by the loss of or introduction of altogether new distinctions. How do large speech communities go about re-negotiating arbitrary associations in the absence of centralised coordination? This thesis first provides an overview of the plethora of explanations that have been given for language change. Approaching language change in a quantitative and evolutionary framework, mathematical and computational modelling is put forward as a tool to investigate and compare these different accounts and their purported underlying mechanisms in a rigorous fashion. The central part of the thesis investigates a relatively recent addition to the pool of mechanisms that have been proposed to influence language change: I will compare previous accounts with a momentum-based selection account of language change, a replicator-neutral model where the popularity of a variant is modulated by its momentum, i.e. its change in frequency of use in the recent past. I will discuss results from a multi-agent model which show that the dynamics of a trend-amplifying mechanism like this are characteristic of language change, in particular by exhibiting spontaneously generated s-shaped transitions. I will also discuss several empirical predictions made by a momentum-based selection account which contrast with those that can be derived from other accounts of language change. Going beyond theoretical arguments for the role of trends in language change, I will go on to present fieldwork data of speakers’ awareness of ongoing syntactic changes in the Shetland dialect of Scots. Data collected using a novel questionnaire methodology show that individuals possess explicit knowledge about the direction as well as current progression of ongoing changes, even for grammatical structures which are very low in frequency. These results complement previous experimental evidence which showed that individuals both possess and make use of implicit knowledge about age-dependent usage differences during ongoing sound changes. Echoing the literature on evolutionary approaches to language change, the final part of the thesis stresses the importance of explicitly situating different pressures either in the domain of the innovation of new or else the selection of existing variants. Based on a modification of the Wright-Fisher model from population genetics, I will argue that trend-amplification selection mechanisms provide predictions that neatly match empirical facts, both in terms of the diachronic dynamics of language change, as well as in terms of the synchronic distribution of linguistic traits that we find in the world.

This tutorial is an examination of trends in telemetry systems as we approach the 1990s. . . a look at where we are, and where we appear to be headed in the near future. Historically, the typical change in our technology is brought about by one of three conditions. First, users demand performance improvements in order to facilitate their analysis of test programs. Second, manufacturers make performance improvements because continuing advances in component technology enable them to offer improved products for telemetry applications. Third, developments in non-telemetry applications, both hardware and software, are adapted to our needs by system designers. We will see the results of all three conditions as we look at trends in telemetry systems.

Abstract:
In the last years, research is focusing on the development of innovative design solutions aimed at reducing development time, costs and increase the quality enabling the companies to reduce the time-to-market. Among the most relevant solutions, the AR/MR/VR technologies allow to realize High-Fidelity virtual prototypes that can be used to carry out tests with real users. Nevertheless, the companies review their prototyping techniques according to the product that are developing, not optimizing the development costs and not taking into account the psychophysical characteristics of the real user. The work presented in this thesis is therefore focused on the definition of a structured framework integrated in the traditional design process and able to support the designers choices for the development of High-Fidelity virtual prototypes in order to experiment the adopted design solution in real context. In order to achieve this goal a methodology is defined. It is based on a User-Centered Design approach according to which the customer is involved in all steps. With the purpose to validate the proposed methodology a set of VP tools are implemented. In addition, the results from the methodology application with the implemented VP tools allow to develop an interactive and reconfigurable Virtual Reality system suitable to equip a laboratory in order to create a complete Virtual User Experience. The overall framework is applied to three real industrial case studies. All concern the study of innovative User Interfaces for various contexts of use: a) a web-based platform to properly support contract furniture, b) an innovative solution to monitor the physiological parameters of a user and therefore to create customized wellness routes, c) a User Interface applied to a shower with high usability for elderly and visual impaired people.

Abstract:
This thesis discusses the globalising processes undergone by a segment of the Mexican business class, notably: the spaces of the world economy they control; their links to social and political networks of global scope, as well as to global movements and currents of thought; and the interests, strategies, projects and perceptions which they share with their counterparts around the world. It argues that they have become one of the main and most powerful forces for the integration of the country in the global capitalist system. Globalising processes lived and promoted by the Mexican business class are contradictory in several respects: on one hand, modernisation, institutionalisation and depersonalisation of corporate structures and of the system of business representation is hindered by business clientelism and corruption in party funding. On the other hand, increasing opportunities of expansion, globalisation and modernisation for Mexican corporations do not always correspond with prospects for growth and development for the national economy. The formation of a global business class in Mexico is conceived as a process in which big businessmen reconstitute their identity, projects and aspirations in a process of collective reflexivity whereby they discuss, negotiate and share experiences with business communities around the world.

Pinto, Joao Paulo Oliveira. "Trends in shop floor control." Thesis, University of Huddersfield, 2004. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.411898.

Full text
Abstract:
The current competitive scenario forces firms to improve their manufacturing and service systems in order to cope with permanent market changes which drives them to seek means of cutting costs without sacrificing the quality and innovation of their products and services. For many manufacturers the number of base products and options in their mix has grown enormously, forcing production managers to be prepared to produce a widening range of different product configurations in lower volumes. Customers, on the other hand, are expecting greater responsiveness in fulfilling their needs, greater flexibility and permanent cost reductions. To cope with this, firms need to change the way they manage their operations. Traditional planning and control practices need to be revised or abandoned and new approaches adopted so firms can achieve the required levels of performance. The research presented in this thesis is devoted to study the current trends in Shop Floor Control systems. The shop floor is the place where the real things happen, and its activities involve the factory resources that most impact on time and costs, and are responsible for adding value to materials and services provided by each industrial firm. The success of any industrial supply chain management system is ultimately based on the performance of its shop floor. The research carried out involved an extensive literature review on SFC theory and practice, and recognised the gap between operations research (OR) methods and operations management (OM) approaches. Whereas OR is concerned with finding the optimal solution to mathematically-based scheduling problems and OM seeks to get the best performance from production resources at a point in time so that a firm's goals are realized. Two industrial surveys were undertaken with the aim to identify current SFC practices within the batch manufacturing sector. The findings revealed a gap between what is studied and researched in the SFC field and its actual practice. There is a significant dissociation between what is being offered by the academic world and the needs of the industrial practices, being the software houses (providers) somewhere in the middle trying to introduce new tools or improvement on the existing ones (which in turn continue to offer a limited range of valuable features that can actually be used by SFC practitioners). To reinforce the findings from the literature review and the industrial surveying process, a series of case studies and industrial visits were carried out. The conclusions drawn from this stage show an industrial practice based on traditional approaches to SFC system, mainly manual and informal systems with fewer or none assistance from computer-based systems. The dynamics of the industrial environments normally found in industry are not compatible with available SFC applications. It was demonstrated that most of SFC managers are "eager to find simple solutions in a complex world". The research proposed a new reference model to SFC system. The reference model is based on the industrial experience and in the most proved models to SFC found in the literature. The reference model adopts a systemic approach to the SFC problem by promoting its integration and synchronization with the firm's supply chain management system. Another important feature of the proposed reference model was its dependence upon human-based systems, whereas computer-based applications are proposed as tools (forming a hybrid system). The simplicity and its practical orientation proved to be an important advantage of the reference model. Several orientations and guidance is provided when the reference model are to be applied into a practical situation

Microelectronic devices traditionally were manufactured by companies that both designed and produced integrated chips. This process was important in 1970's and 1980's when the manufacturing processes required tweaking the design, understanding of the manufacturing processes and occasional need to redesign. As manufacturing techniques and standards evolved, companies have changed their business model and have started to outsource their manufacturing to merchant foundries. Semiconductor companies have also started to outsource the design and verification of their chips to third party design service companies and focus on core competence like research and development of new technologies and defining protocols. This trend has evolved even though the chips have become much more complex, hard to design and hard to manufacture. This thesis studies the different players in the supply chain, how each player has evolved and the challenges companies face in making decisions regarding outsourcing internal processes. It was found that the advancements in the downstream industries such as EDA, Design Suppliers and EMS have helped fabless companies remain competitive with IDM's (Integrated Device Manufacturers). The fabless companies compete in different markets that do not need the most advanced processing technologies used by leading-edge companies.

In the backdrop of the dotcom bubble burst, companies cleaned up the excesses of the nineties and are more agile and efficient than ever before. However, companies face tremendous pressure to improve shareholder returns. A new trend is emerging as more and more capital is flowing into Private equity, especially in the buyout industry. Both established and entrepreneurial companies are exploring new ways to partner with Private equity firms to restructure and build long-term shareholder value. In this thesis, I will perform an in-depth study of private equity led merger and acquisitions trends since the bubble burst. I will investigate the emerging trend of tech buyouts, activist led corporate governance reforms, analyse tech buyout transactions from 2000-2005 and comparative study of 3 tech buyout firms, and leadership challenges in the private equity industry.

While the adoption rate of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology is increasing, mass-market adoption will not be achieved until a few major challenges are addressed. These challenges are: privacy, security and costs from the end-user's view point and limited power supply to the tag from the engineering perspective. We discuss the research efforts aimed at addressing these challenges. We focus our attention on research in: RFID privacy and security, antennas, polymer electronics-based RFID devices, power management circuits and techniques, and efficient RF spectrum utilization. We conclude by drawing attention to three additional areas that we believe are in need of more research.

Current changes in the way that large flight test systems are utilized have affected the industry’s methodology in both the early design phases and in the implementation of nextgeneration hardware and software. The reduction of available RF spectrum, the implementation of packet telemetry methods and systems, and a desire to implement commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware are only some of the considerations that telemetry systems integrators and product houses have to face. This paper describes how test methodology changes affect current large systems design at both government test ranges and at airframe/missile manufacturer test facilities. In addition, consideration is given to the area of increased processing power as it affects hardware and software design, the leveraging of such current and future telecommunications technology as network switch technology and compression, cross utilization, standardized technology, and the movement toward platform-independent software.

T&E range instrumentation systems of diverse designs are located throughout the United States. Used for testing of aircraft weapons systems and missiles these systems are large, expensive, and unique to each site. New technologies now emerging are making possible the construction of small, inexpensive range instrumentation systems of common design and significant capability. Using industry-standard bus designs and distributed general-purpose microprocessors, these systems, while still using existing instrumentation, will be able to provide growth flexibility that is not inherent in today’s monolithic architectures. This paper will review the design and capabilities of a few systems currently under construction as well as describe what can be expected in the immediate future of range instrumentation systems with the transponders using multilateration techniques for position location and message handling. Range instrumentation (RI) systems of various forms have been in place since the testing of weapons systems began. As the technology evolved computers became integral parts of these systems, significantly expanding their capabilities both from the standpoint of data capture and data analysis. That this evolution is continuing can be demonstrated by two RI systems currently under construction: A fixed-site tracking system and mobile tracking system (the Mobile Sea Range, MSR). While these new systems define the state-ofthe-art in computer-based RI systems, new technologies now evolving and the budget-conscious climate that is likely to continue for many years will require changes in our thinking of what an RI system should look like and how it will be maintained. What follows is a brief description of both these fixed and mobile RI systems, an analysis of RI trends, and a few recommendations of what can be done to improve future systems.

Increased usage of PSK signals in TT&C formats has generated unique challenges for ground support equipment developers. DSI has met this challenge with the introduction of its model 7133 BPSK / QPSK modem. Enhanced on the Aerojet / USAF GS-14 program, the 7133 is the latest addition to the company's modem product line. The 7133 uses a dual mode cross arm Costas loop to demodulate BPSK or QPSK data. With an implementation loss averaging 0.8 dB, the 7133 demodulates asynchronous 2.56 MBps QPSK data. It also processes BPSK data at rates up to 2.56 MBps, with a loss of less than 0.5 dB. We present the 7133 demod design and test results. Current work at DSI extends the basic 7133 design to handle unbalanced QPSK formats. DSI's new model 7750 receiver-demodulator processes quadrature input signals either in pairs or independently. The 7750 uses phase locked loops to demodulate PSK, FM, PM or AM. We present the 7750 extended Costas loop design and preliminary test results. Finally, we look at applying recent DSP and NCO IC's to multi-mode TT&C demodulation.

The benefits of small-scale freshwater fisheries In addition to consumption for food security, they make an important contribution to an economy both locally and regionally, as well as on an international scale, in this way, with the objective of investigating how the Quantities, hake and the values generated by different modes of freshwater fishing in the world and test a hypothesis of an economic contribution of small-scale continental fisheries is higher in developing countries than other forms of freshwater fishing in developed countries. For this, a systematic review of the literature and synthesis of information was made. Thus, it could be observed that in the period 2004-2015 the freshwater fisheries production, accumulated a loss of 775 millions of ton. Freshwater fishery production abruptly decreased markedly from 2010 onwards. Subsistence fishery was chiefly recorded in Africa and the small-scale fishery was prevalent in Asia. The highest fishing production was recorded in USA (mostly recreational) and in Mali, in western Africa. The development of FWF is still encouraged in those areas were inland water bodies are under-utilized and poor managed, but data gathered here suggested otherwise; freshwater environments should be indeed monitored and conserved aiming management since fishery has been intensively performed in these areas through the world.
