Abstract:
In the last decade of the nineteenth century, African Americans faced growing hostility and disenfranchisement from the white majority, especially in the former Confederate states. African Americans were divided over the best strategy for dealing with their deteriorating circumstance, and after the death of Frederick Douglass in 1895, they lacked an established leader that could give voice to their concerns. To many, their best hope laid in the leadership and philosophy of an Alabama educator named Booker T. Washington. Washington taught that African Americans should not clamor for immediate recognition and equality, but instead work hard to become financially independent and important. He believed that once blacks earned and possessed what whites wanted, material wealth, then they would be accepted readily into American society. However, a significant group of blacks opposed Washington's teachings, asking how African Americans could prosper without the social and political means to promote their interests and ensure their safety and wellbeing. Although this alternative faction began to emerge more fully after the 1903 publication of W. E. B. Du Bois's The Souls of Black Folk, which contained a harsh critique of Washington, the tension between these two philosophies was captured earlier in the materials of the "American Negro Exhibit," a display at the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1900. The exhibit was coordinated and compiled by Thomas Calloway. Calloway, an African American colleague of both Washington and Du Bois, hoped to integrate their strategies and show Europeans the true nature of the African American community. The materials he collected, as well as his arrangement of them, act as a record of the conflicting ideas embraced by the African American community at the turn of the century and as a testament to the debate over which images would have priority in defining African American racial identity and strategy. The collection was a huge success in the eyes of Europeans who visited the fair, but did little to impact the racial discourse in the United States when the display returned and went on view at two American fairs.

Lipscombe, Trevor, and n/a. "Different teachers for different students? : The relationship between learning style, other student variables and students' ranking of teacher characteristics." University of Canberra. Education, 1989. http://erl.canberra.edu.au./public/adt-AUC20060817.141319.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examined the influence of selected student variables (learning style , age, sex, nationality (birthplace), academic achievement, and social class) on the ranking of twelve teacher characteristics. 246 ACT TAFE Associate Diploma in Business students formed the sample. Results were compared with a similar study by Travis (1987) of secondary students in Canada and USA. The extent to which different groups of students prefer different teacher characteristics has important implications for the growing practice of student rating of teachers' effectiveness. This practice (operating under a psychometric paradigm) currently assumes that any differences of opinion between student raters are the result of student carelessness (random error) or bias (systematic error). The possibility that these differences of opinion are the result of systematic variation, based on differences between students, is not countenanced. This study demonstrated significant (p=<0.05) systematic variations on four of the six variables studied (age, academic achievement, nationality and social class) in the way that respondents ranked one or more of the teacher characteristics. Comparisons with Travis's results showed marked differences both in the overall ranking of the twelve teacher characteristics and in the influence of student variables on the ranking of individual teacher characteristics. While Travis also showed that some student variables influenced the ranking of teacher characteristics, different relationships are evident. Travis's respondents emphasised the importance of good, supportive relationships with their teachers, while in this study, instrumental characteristics were preferred. This suggests a range of preferred characteristics across student populations. Within both studies there is a wide range of opinion as to the importance of all twelve teacher characteristics. More than half of the present sample also suggested a range of additional characteristics which they believed influenced their learning. These findings support the view that different students prefer different teachers. They suggest that some student variables may have a greater influence than others (e.g. academic achievement level) and that there may similarly be more agreement on some teacher characteristics (e.g. Knowledgeablity) than others. Users of student ratings of teacher effectiveness should be aware of the paradigmatic limitations of aggregated student scores. Validity might be improved by using teacher characteristics which raters agree are important and by grouping raters for influential student variables.

Klein, Heather A. "Measuring the Removal of Trichloroethylene from Phytoremediation Sites at Travis and Fairchild Air Force Bases." DigitalCommons@USU, 2011. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/860.

Full text
Abstract:
Past use of trichloroethylene (TCE) as a degreasing solvent for aircraft maintenance has resulted in widespread groundwater contamination at Air Force Bases around the world. Travis AFB in California and Fairchild AFB in Washington are evaluating phytoremediation as a treatment option, since trees have been reported to take up dissolved TCE from shallow groundwater and volatilize it to the atmosphere while enhancing the volatilization of TCE from surrounding soil. Previous studies generally focused on the identification of removal mechanisms. The emphasis of this research was to quantify total TCE removal from phytoremediation demonstration plots at Travis and Fairchild AFBs. Tree cores, collected using an increment borer and analyzed using headspace GC/MS, were used to determine the relative TCE concentrations within the plume beneath the trees and to estimate the mass of TCE in each tree. To estimate the volatilization of TCE from leaves, a small section of tree branch was placed inside a flow-through glass chamber. Continuous air flow through the chamber maintained normal transpiration and temperature. Air exiting the chamber was sampled for TCE using Tenax® tubes. Humidity probes placed at the chamber entry and exit were used to estimate transpiration. Volatilization of TCE from tree trunk and soil surfaces was measured by enclosing a section of trunk or ground surface within a small stainless steel chamber. Fans in the chamber mixed the air that was recirculated through Tenax® tubes to continuously remove TCE. After a measured time interval, the Tenax® tubes were analyzed for TCE by thermal desorption GC/MS. By using a Thiessen polygon method, the removal of TCE was estimated to be 839 g/yr at Travis and 18 g/yr at Fairchild with the majority from leaf and soil volatilization. Soil surface volatilization of TCE was greater inside the planted areas than outside the planted areas, indicating that the trees enhance this removal by this mechanism. Based on these estimates phytoremediation removed 5 and 50% of the mass of TCE in the groundwater at Fairchild and Travis Air Force sites, respectively.

Angel-Graham, Alexander. "McDowell and experience: self-determination and answerability to the world." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/10614.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis critically examines John McDowell’s account of experience and perceptual judgment. McDowell’s principal thesis in Mind and World was that experience needs to be conceived as comprising conceptual content in order to assuage certain characteristic anxieties in modern philosophy in relation to empirical thought. McDowell’s notion of experience with a manifold of passively actualized propositional content became central to achieving that end. McDowell’s recently revised account of experience, now divested of propositional content, accordingly warrants an examination of the new form of conceptually shaped experience that he offers, and of the necessity of positing experience with conceptual content, in order to avoid the Myth of the Given. I identify three central features that come to inform McDowell’s account of experience with conceptual content, which in turn constitute the divisions of Chapters in this thesis: 1. Rational Entitlement; 2. Objectivity; 3. Self-Determining Capacities. In this context, I elucidate the particular models of conceptual intelligibility that are offered by McDowell in order to substantiate his stipulation of conceptual capacities as they are to be understood as operative in experience. Charles Travis presents an account of experience and perceptual judgment which contributes to McDowell’s critical rethink of his proposal in Mind and World that conceptually shaped experience has propositional content. I contend that, with McDowell no longer able to draw upon the more robust models of how to conceive of experience as conceptually shaped, and in light of certain aspects of Travis’s account of perceptual judgment, such a cumulative methodology places McDowell’s account of experience as conceptually shaped in serious difficulty – such that it may warrant a reconsideration of those higher-order concerns, specifically the Myth of the Given, that motivate and inform his treatment of experience and perceptual judgment.
