Abstract:
The problems of analytical and statistical modeling of the travelling cranes loads are carried out in the paper. The analytical model was expanded by the consideration of influence of the approach of cranes trolley, consideration of zero realization areas and crane impact zones which allowed to precise the statistical characteristics of the vertical crane loads. The numerical modeling which takes into account the accidental position of the crane bridge and position of the trolley on the crane bridge was used for the calculation the vertical crane loads from the four-wheel cranes. Comparison of the results showed that the design value of the vertical load per wheel is rarely realized. This fact should be used to clarify the crane load combination factors.

Abstract:
The comparative analysis of travelling cranes of national and foreign producers is given in the paper. The travelling cranes of concern Demag were taken into consideration among the foreign cranes. The operation conditions of cranes were analyzed according to different codes of practice. The geometrical parameters, load and weight characteristics of overhead cranes were also compared. For the calculation the horizontal and vertical loads of cranes the most unfavorable schemes of location of bridge cranes on the structures of a production building were defined. According to these schemes, the maximum loads on the frame of the building were calculated and the maximum efforts in the crane beams were determined. Using obtained internal efforts the cross sections of crane girders with a span of 6 and12 mwere calculated. The results of the comparison showed the advantages of the modern cranes in materials saving of steel structures of industrial buildings.

Abstract:
Travelling of transshipping crane, located at the coal warehouse of the coke and chemical production of Ural Steel JSC, is carried out using eight asynchronous motors with a phase rotor. To control the speed of its travelling, a device is used that regulates the speed variation of the asynchronous motors with a phase rotor by varying the resistances in the rotor circuit, which does not provide the necessary synchronization of their operation. Asynchrony in the operation of electric motors leads to a skew in the flexible support of the crane and, consequently, to an increase of the time of technological operations fulfilment. This means reduction of the amount of work performed. A solution to the problem is proposed by implement an electric drive frequency control into the mechanism of the transshipping crane travelling. This will significantly reduce the loss of electrical energy during transients and ensure the best performance indices. Calculation and selection of the necessary elements of the frequency control system of the electric drive were carried out. A schematic electrical diagram of the connection of an electric drive for travelling the transshipping crane is given. A system has been developed for automatic control of an electric drive. The system is based on speed regulation with an indirect orientation of the rotor flow grip vector, which allows matching the speed of asynchronous motors. The analysis of the obtained transient processes of speed and moment is made. The efficiency of the proposed engine matching scheme is confirmed by the elaborated mathematical model. The proposed system allows eliminating the skew in the flexible support of the crane caused by jerks during the travelling of the crane and reducing energy consumption by 4%. The proposed solution the drive perfection can be used at modernization of bridge transshipping cranes, used at loading and unloading operations and at transportation of goods with stable cargo flows in the warehouses of metallurgical plants, ports, thermal power plants, etc.

Abstract The issue of ensuring safety in the crane operation process is the subject of standards and regulations: the aim is to apply solutions aimed at ensuring the health and safety of users of cranes and the work environment. The subject of the paper is the concept of using vision technology in ensuring the safety of overhead travelling type cranes. Using a camera based vision system in conjunction with dedicated sensors, it is possible to build a system for monitoring the degradation process of selected crane operating parameters and conditions of use in a specific dynamically changing environment, as well as the operator’s characteristics. Using the developed standards of safe use of the crane, it is possible to generate safe behaviors resulting in the device being immobilized or the potential hazard being evaporated.

Abstract:
The design of electric cranes requires knowledge of not only the dynamic loads acting on the mechanisms and the structure, and the movement of the crane and payload during their various operations, but also the electromagnetic characteristics of the control system. This article puts forward a new comprehensive dynamic model for the whole system of electric cranes, which includes the mechanisms, the steel structure, the induction motors, and their drive systems. A general electric overhead travelling crane controlled by two types of control schemes (of changing the rotor resistance and the closed-loop rotor-flux-oriented vector control) during the operation of its lifting mechanism is studied. Hamilton's principle with a modified Lagrangian, and the theory of induction motors and drive systems are combined to build a dynamic model of electric cranes during lifting operations. This model aims at simulating the dynamic behaviour of the mechanical and structural systems for the transient and steady-state behaviour of the induction motors and their control during the operations of a real crane. It can be seen that the dynamic system of the whole crane is highly non-linear and non-stationary even for only the lifting operation.

Abstract:
The paper presents the results of numerical investigations of the overhead travelling cranes load motion. The model studies assumes that the load is suspended on the inextensible rope. Conversely, its motion is triggered by an external moment. In addition, energy losses in the construction node connecting the rope to the drum are included. At the same time these losses were mapped through a linear viscous damper. The main objective was to evaluate the impact of individual mathematical model parameters on the dynamics of the transported load. The results were compared between two models: with/without crane structure vibrations included. The results were illustrated by multi-colored maps of the largest Lyapunov exponent, bifurcation diagrams, and Poincare cross-sections.

Abstract:
Hoists and cranes exist in many contexts around the world, often carrying veryheavy loads. The safety for the user and bystanders is of utmost importance. Thisthesis investigates whether it is possible to perform fault detection on a systemlevel, measuring the inputs and outputs of the system without introducing newsensors. The possibility of detecting dangerous faults while letting safe faultspass is also examined.A mathematical greybox model is developed and the unknown parametersare estimated using data from a labscale test crane. Validation is then performedwith other datasets to check the accuracy of the model. A linear observer of thesystem states is created using the model. Simulated fault injections are made, and different fault detection methods are applied to the residuals created withthe observer. The results show that dangerous faults in the system or the sensorsthemselves are detectable, while safe faults are disregarded in many cases. The idea of performing model-based fault detection from a system point ofview shows potential, and continued investigation is recommended.

Abstract:
Intermediate diaphragms are invariably included in the design of overhead travelling crane box-girders. This study concerns the influence of these diaphragms and their spacing on the global characteristic behaviour of the girder. In particular the action of internal diaphragms in the control of stresses associated with distortional deformation is investigated. The details and results of experimental tests on scale models of two crane geometries are presented. A method of analysis is developed to describe the distortional deformation of crane box-girder geometries using discrete box section elements. This method is assessed by comparison with both the experimental results and finite element analysis conducted for a range of configurations. It is shown to produce adequate predictions for use in further investigations. The theory is applied (by means of computer analysis of different crane box arrangements) to perform a study of the influence of intermediate diaphragms on both transverse distortional bending and longitudinal distortional warping. The results of this study are then incorperated into a series of design recommendations for the selection of cross section geometry and the positioning of diaphragms with particular reference to the control of these distortional effects.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Electric driven overhead travelling bridge cranes (EOHTC) form a vital part of industrial plants where heavy objects require moving. Overhead travelling cranes aid in production by allowing an uninterrupted work process on the ground while heavy loads are moved to their required locations. Various factors need consideration in determining the loads induced by an EOHTC on its support structure. In order to design such a support structure, the designer must understand and take into account the various loads that the support structure will be subject to during its lifetime. The procedure for determining the loads induced by the EOHTC on its support structure is laid out in the SANS 10160-6:2010 code of practice. This document was published in June 2010 and as a result very few worked examples exist to test the coherence of the procedure. This thesis presents an investigation into the procedure for determining the actions induced by overhead travelling bridge cranes adopted in the SANS 10160-6:2010 code of practice. The investigation was conducted by developing a software application to automatically determine the necessary crane actions needed for the design of the crane support structure, given certain input parameters. The motivation behind this was to have a tool that can calculate the crane induced loads automatically. And by developing such a tool the procedure given in the code of practice is better understood. The Java programming language was used to code the calculations with an object oriented programming approach (OOP). NetBeans, the integrated development environment for developing with Java was used to generate the required graphical user interface of the application. In addition, a Microsoft Excel calculation sheet was also developed for the purpose of comparison and verification. Whilst developing the software application, it was found that the model for the acceleration or deceleration of the crane was specific for four wheel cranes only. This model was then extended to accommodate eight and sixteen wheel cranes and incorporated into the algorithm architecture of the application. The application was successfully completed and verified using benchmarked examples.
Java is gebruik as programmeringstaal waar die objek geörienteerde programeringstyl toegepas was.

Idowu, Ifeolu Mobolaji. "Numerical evaluation (FEA) of end stop impact forces for a crane fitted with hydraulic buffers." Thesis, Stellenbosch : University of Stellenbosch, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/5399.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MScEng (Civil Engineering))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: End stop impact forces are horizontal longitudinal forces imposed by the crane on the end stops. Both the previous South African loading code SABS 0160:1989 and the current South African loading code SANS 10160 , classify end stop impact force as an accidental load case , hence they are not expected to occur within the expected lifetime when the guide lines for crane operation are strictly adhered to. In the estimation of end stop impact force, the previous South African loading code SABS 0160:1989 gives two guidelines for estimating the end stop impact force. The first guideline is simplistic in its approach and it’s based on the assumption that the crane and its supporting structure act as rigid bodies; hence calculation is based on rigid body mechanics. Literature reviewed reveals that this is not correct. The second guideline is more explicit in its approach as it takes into account the crane speed, resilience of the buffers and resilience of the end stops. The current South African loading code, SANS 10160 gives a better representation of the dynamics of the crane movement. However, the dynamic factor recommended for the estimation of end stop impact force is empirical in nature and thus lacks adequate scientific backing. One of the purposes of this research was to investigate the influence of the stiffness of the crane bridge on the end stop impact force. This was achieved by conducting a series of FEA simulations on the double bridge EOHTC fitted with elastomeric buffers. For this set of simulations, the effect of each influencing parameter on the end stop impact force was investigated, and the maximum end stop impact force was obtained using a constraint optimization technique. From the results obtained, comparison was then made with the existing maximum end stop impact force for a single bridge EOHTC fitted with elastomeric buffers. Another purpose of this research was to investigate the end stop impact force for an electric overhead travelling cranes (EOHTC) fitted with hydraulic buffers taking into account the dynamics involved in the movement of the EOHTC. This was achieved by a series of experimental and numerical investigation. The numerical investigation was conducted using an existing numerical model of an EOHTC which captures the crane and its supporting structure as a coupled system. Finite element analysis (FEA) impact force histories obtained were calibrated to the base experimental impact force histories. Thereafter, a series of FEA simulations were conducted by changing the parameters which have a substantial effect on the end stop impact forces. This yielded various maximum impact peaks for various parameters. The maximum impact force was then mathematical obtained from the FEA impact force histories for a given level of reliability using a constraint optimization technique. Also, codified end stop impact forces were calculated for the SABS 0160:1989 and SANS 10160-6:2010. From the results obtained, comparison was made between the codified end stop impact force and the maximum impact force obtained from the constraint optimization technique.

Abstract:
The presence of travelling cranes in industrial buildings means an additional effort for the structure of the ship due to the additional loads. Thus, a specific and complete analysis is required, both static and dynamic, to design a structure resistant to the efforts generated by the load coming from the travelling crane. The objective of this article is to elaborate a document that serves as a guide for a correct analysis and design of the beam that supports the travelling crane, known as the rail beam; from the comparison of regulations of some Latin American countries and the North American norms. This analysis includes the set of efforts generated by the operation of a bridge crane. Finally, the proposal or method will be validated with an example of a crane lifting capacity of up to 10 tons.

Abstract:
Abstract A design automation software is developed to use FEM Rules in any crane design procedure. The software (DES_CRANES/FEM_RULES) can be accessed from an automated crane design computer program. Working and loading conditions are transferred to FEM_RULES and computed data, related recommendations and suggested numerical values of some parameters are returned as they are specified in the FEM Rules The software is currently under development to apply in design automation of Overhead Travelling Cranes and Gantry Cranes. DES_CRANES/FEM_RULES also includes some remarks and suggestions derived from various standards for some topics in the FEM Rules.

Abstract:
The research and development work presented in this paper was initialized by Andra in 2007. The work necessary for manufacturing and testing a full scale demonstrator is presently implemented. The case story is twofold. The first part is related to the initial development of a high performance concrete formulation used for fabricating concrete storage containers (containing Intermediate Level and Long Lived Waste primary canisters) to be stacked and emplaced into 400-m long concrete lined horizontal disposal vaults (also called cavern), excavated in the Callovo-Oxfordian clay host formation at a 550 to 600-m depth, with an inside diameter of approximately 8-m. The fabrication of the concrete boxes is illustrated. The second part presents the outcome at the end of the detailed design phase, for a system which is now being manufactured (for further test and assembly), for the emplacement of the concrete containers inside the vault. The application was engineered for remote emplacing a pile of 2 concrete containers (the containers are preliminarily stacked in a pile of 2, inside a hot cell, thanks to a ground travelling gantry crane). The emplacement process is justified and the related emplacement synoptic is illustrated. The test campaign is scheduled in 2011–2012. The successful completion of the technical trials is mandatory to confirm the mechanical feasibility of remotely emplacing concrete containers into large horizontal disposal caverns over long distances. The later display of the machinery at work in Andra’s showroom will be instrumental for the confidence building process involving the various stakeholders concerned by the public enquiry period (mid-2013) preceding the deep geological repository license application (2014–2015).
