Abstract:
This article analyses Christian Petzold's exemplary 2014 film Phoenix, tracking a new development in Holocaust cinema that focuses on phenomenological narratives of embodied experience of trauma. It examines the film through the cinematic representation of the traumatised body. While there is no dearth of scholarly inquiries into the relationship of trauma and the body and how it is mediated through film, these are often more concerned with the way in which the body becomes a projection screen for repressed or collective trauma and less about the lived conditions of individual trauma. The present analysis offers a rethinking of the traumatised body as one beset by the condition of disorientation. As a methodological guide, it turns to Sara Ahmed's pivotal phenomenological study Queer Phenomenology (2006).

Abstract:
Within cinematic horror, trauma as a concept has often been used as an allegorical strategy to work through collective anxieties. This article on It Follows (David Robert Mitchell, 2014) and Get Out (Jordan Peele, 2017) strikes another note. It argues that, by their aesthetic qualities, both films are rendered traumatic in their affective orientation, both toward the cinematic world and toward the spectator. It analyses the two films through trauma as an affective-aesthetic strategy that puts emphasis on the edge of the frame as well as on the offscreen space. This strategy evokes a sinister mood that exists independently of the protagonists, allowing us to meaningfully feel the effects of their trauma as we engage with the film. Especially the use of the offscreen space in both films contributes to the “traumatic mood” of the films, but it also functions to immerse the spectator in the invisible filmic world. In this way, It Follows and Get Out embody trauma as a denial of relief from dread, which we both recognize in the characters' experience, and feel in our own bodies through the effective creation of ever-present threat.

Recently, there has been a significant rise in the production of films on the ‎Jasenovac camp and related Ustasha crimes, taking their share in the mnemonic‎ politics. The paper focuses on the two most recent films, The Diary of‎ Diana B., a docufiction filmed in Croatia, and Dara of Jasenovac, a feature‎ film which was Serbia’s candidate for an Oscar. The memory of traumatic ‎events is remediated in each film differently and used for representing diverse‎ group identities through temporal relation with the difficult past. Comparison ‎between the two films focuses on subject positions and regimes of historicity ‎as categories that make the production of meaning mechanism visible. The‎ main questions that guide the analysis are: how are victims and perpetrators ‎portrayed, who is witnessing traumatic events, and to whom is the trauma attributed?‎ Do they bring something new to the cultural memory of the Holocaust‎ and genocide in the Independent State of Croatia?‎

Abstract:
Neo-Victorian narratives of trauma display a temporal duplicity in addressing nineteenthcentury traumas that still prevail at present, including natural catastrophes, wars, or more personal and insidious traumas, such as domestic violence and oppression, or child and sexual abuse. In this article, I argue that Guillermo del Toro’s neo-Victorian film Crimson Peak (2015) is constructed as a trauma narrative that exploits the trope of «the uncanny» (Freud 1919) and its main representations –i.e. the double, the return of the dead and repetition compulsion– to address the traumatic experience of gender violence and its impact on both Victorian and contemporary women. Furthermore, I contend that the film functions as a symbolical space where the audience can bear witness to and reflect on the multitemporal trauma of gender violence. That way, viewers can bear witness and develop empathy towards survivors of this traumatic experience.

Abstract:
In 1988, South Korean president Roh Tae-woo implemented democratic reforms in order to host the Olympic Games. These reforms opened the floodgates for Korean New Wave films. The reforms repealed censorship regulations and gave Korean filmmakers the autonomy to actualize their creative visions for the first time since they were colonized by Japan in 1910. The results of this newfound artistic freedom were films that grappled with the trauma of eighty years of colonialism, war, and authoritarian dictatorship through biting political commentary. This study explores Park Chan-wook’s representation of 한 (han) Korean cultural trauma in his New Wave films Oldboy and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance. Using literature on trauma, film, and Korean history combined with original film analysis, this study works to explain the criticisms embedded in Chan-wook’s films. The films critique revenge fantasies and both conscious and unconscious ignorance of traumatic events by demonstrating they are ineffective methods of processing한. His films show that the only way to heal 한 is to acknowledge and accept all wrongdoing, even one's own, and mourn the consequences of the atrocities. While 한 is specific to Koreans, cultural trauma is not. The ubiquity of cultural trauma makes the lessons in Chan- wook’s works of paramount importance and global relevance. While resolution of trauma is never final, Chan-wook’s films serve both as a guideline for and a performance of cultural healing in the face of moral atrocities.

Abstract:
This article is motivated by the polemic surrounding watching the G30S/PKI film. The purpose of writing is to find new insights from film as one of the artifacts of popular culture: where film is a mirror of oneself, even a mirror of a nation. Through an effort to analyze the film Peng betrayan G30S/PKI, we capture a moral message about the gripping culture of a society that has suffered from chronic and traumatic historical wounds for so long. Through this film, we find a picture of power that appears as an “interpretation regime”, which monopolizes and controls the interpretation of the world of signs and symbols, namely the G30S/PKI film, so that the truth is bent for the sake of political propaganda. With a qualitative method, this paper intends to construct emancipatory meanings through reading films that speak of small narratives that function as trauma healers, and whose presence becomes an opponent for the domination of the big narratives of a nation's history. The results of this study confirm that the trauma passed down from generation to generation is faced not by running from it, but rather by facing it, re-watching it, making it a mirror of our own modesty in the past. It can be concluded that the narrative of a film is a means to restore spiritual shame, so that we can appreciate the shame of failing before God, to be restored and empowered again as a new human being.

Abstract:
Clinical theories of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) suggest that trauma memories are disorganized. In the present study, we examined how trauma-film exposure affects two aspects of memory disorganization, poor memory recall and memory disjointedness, and their relationship to PTSD-like symptoms. In Session 1, 90 healthy participants were exposed to a trauma ( n = 60) or a neutral film ( n = 30). Cognitive processing styles, memory characteristics, and intrusive memories of the film were assessed. The trauma-film group reported greater memory disjointedness of the worst moments of the film but better memory recall of the film than the neutral-film group. In the trauma-film group, cognitive processing and memory disjointedness were related to intrusive memories and PTSD-like symptoms in the week after film exposure. Memory disjointedness but not poor memory recall mediated the relationship between cognitive processing and intrusions. The findings suggest that different aspects of memory disorganization need to be distinguished to explain PTSD symptoms.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract The article deals with the extradition of Baltic soldiers from Sweden in 1946 as represented in Per Olov Enquist’s novel The Legionnaires: A Documentary Novel (Legionärerna. En roman om baltutlämningen, 1968) and Johan Bergenstråhle’s film A Baltic Tragedy (Baltutlämningen. The theoretical framework is taken from trauma studies and its equivalent within film studies, where trauma is seen as a repeated occurrence of a past event. In this regard, literature and moving images become the means of reaching the traumatic event, a way to relive it. What separates the extradition of the Baltic soldiers from other traumas, such as the Holocaust, is that it functions as a guilt complex related to the failure to prevent the tragedy, which is connected to Sweden’s position of neutrality during World War II and the appeasement of all the warring nations. It is argued that this is a collective trauma created by Enquist’s novel, which blew it into national proportions. However, Bergenstråhle’s film changes the focus of the trauma by downplaying the bad conscience of the Swedes. In this way, the film aims to create new witnesses to the extradition affair. The analysis looks at the reception of both the novel and film in order to explain the two different approaches to the historical event, as well as the two different time periods in which they were produced. The authors argue that the two years that separate the appearance of the novel and the film explain the swing undergone by the political mood of the late 1960s towards a deflated revolution of the early 1970s, when the film arrived on screens nationwide. However, in terms of creating witnesses to the traumatic event, the book and film manage to stir public opinion to the extent that the trauma changes from being slowly effacing to being collectively ‘experienced’ through remembrance. The paradox is that, while the novel still functions as a vivid reminder of the painful aftermath caused by Swedish neutrality during World War II, the film is almost completely forgotten today. The film’s mode of attacking the viewers with an I-witness account, the juxtaposition and misconduct led to a rejection of the narrative by Swedish audiences.

Elliott, Emma M. "Damn Spot: Navigating Emotional Trauma in the Body." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2019. https://scholarship.claremont.edu/scripps_theses/1252.

Abstract:
I researched the history of emotional trauma and its portrayal in modern media and Shakespearean plays and created a film based on my personal experience with the topic. This film utilizes Shakespearean song and monologue from Hamlet and Macbeth to narrate the inner journey of a girl working through emotional trauma. We follow her as she feels the impact of her trauma in her body and as she tries to hide it from her friends and maintain a normal facade. This film does contain a fictionalized portrayal of an anxiety attack, so viewer discretion is advised. This project does not claim to be a comprehensive and complete narrative for anyone dealing with emotional trauma: it is a deeply personal experience and affects every person differently. I drew inspiration from my own struggles with emotional trauma for this film and the reflection of my experience that I found in these Shakespearean monologues.

Abstract:
A screenwriter’s background of experiences and past psychological trauma can be integral to a film’s success if utilised to inform and define the filmmaker’s approach to storytelling. It is identified in this paper that The Sick Room, as a short film text, is constructed in this way. The story evolved from the filmmaker’s difficulties in dealing with a childhood trauma involving the uneasiness he felt about his uncle’s mental illness. By grounding the film’s narrative in his own circumstances the filmmaker seeks to find solutions to new understandings about the stigmatization of victims of mental illness and advocate for an increase in the level of patient care from mental health institutions in contemporary society. Acknowledging the personal and prejudiced nature of his story the filmmaker endeavours to find an appropriate aesthetic style for The Sick Room to justify his perspective on the issue to the viewer. The filmmaker explores how the docudrama film, due to its correlations with the realist and Dogme95 movements of filmmaking, possesses the appropriate aesthetic qualities required to achieve the telling of his personal story in an entertaining way, but also one that provides the viewer with a more apparently unmediated experience.

Abstract:
During traumatic events, individuals can experience dissociative symptoms related to changes in cognitively processing; these changes are suggested to impact on the development of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. Past literature has proposed two forms of peritraumatic dissociation (compartmentalisation and detachment), however little quantitative research has focussed on separately manipulating these experiences in order to further our understanding of their aetiology. The current study addressed this knowledge gap and additionally sought to understand the role of cognitive processing in the dissociation-intrusion relationship. Using an audio-only adaption of the trauma film paradigm, 60 participants were divided into three conditions and presented with different visual tasks - mirror staring, dot-staring or neutral images – that were hypothesised to induce the two forms of dissociation. Post-audio, a number of factors were assessed, including state dissociation, perceptual priming and conceptual priming, as well as intrusions over the following days. As hypothesised, participants in the dissociation conditions displayed an increase in perceptual priming compared the control conditions, and reported more severe intrusions. However, no differences were found in conceptual priming, in the overall number of intrusions between conditions, or in dissociative symptoms between the dissociation conditions. The current study utilised new techniques in the analysis of PTSD and its origins, and showed their potential in the experimental study of dissociation and analogue trauma techniques. The findings also contributed to the growing body of knowledge investigating the impact that dissociation and cognitive processing has on the aetiology of PTSD.

Abstract:
The contemporary turn of psychoanalytic film analysis has opened a new mode of understanding cinematic language. However, rejecting classical psychoanalysis would be premature. This thesis will place the two in conjunction, specifically through Sigmund Freud’s conceptualization of moral masochism and Wilfred Bion’s theory of thinking. Through four films: Una, The Tale, The Tribe, and Son of Saul I explore the affective nature of films that depict trauma and why one would gravitate towards such upsetting material. The spectator who seeks to be frustrated is not looking to harm oneself but to process this frustration in order to expand their emotional experience.

Abstract:
New French Extremity films are violent, transgressive, and break many social taboos in their narratives. However, this genre's directors are intelligent and construct these films with clues to France's past and how it still has implications in the present. This thesis was written to point out how New French Extremity films offer spectators the potential to reincorporate traumatic moments in French history by juxtaposing them against present day social, political, and economic ideologies. The purpose for this course of study was to investigate historical encounters that are present in New French Extremity filmmaking, something that has yet to be addressed by other scholars in any great detail. The general approach taken was to use Walter Benjamin's theory of allegory to secure connections between the past and present and illustrate how they could be interpreted by the film's spectators. The outcome of this research indicates how a spectator can potentially change his or her relationship with history and work towards reassessing his or her relationship with the present under certain social, political, or economic structures.

Abstract:
This paper explores how the film Rouge (1987) adapts and transforms traditional ghost narratives and how the cinematic anxiety of time is associated with the countdown temporality of Hong Kong in the 1980s. I argue that Rouge transforms two narrative structures of traditional Chinese literature — Caizi-jiaren (scholar-beauty) and the “historical ghost tale” — to foreground the particular temporality of Hong Kong. Firstly, the returning of the female ghost and her failure in pursuit of love intensifies the conflict between the modern linear time and the cosmological ghostly time and poignantly manifests the impossibility of a fifty-year unchanged commitment. Secondly, unlike traditional “historical ghost tales” in which ghosts were called back by traumas of the collapse of old dynasties, the revenant of the heroin in this film returns to the living world for the prearranged trauma of the future, due to the particular temporality of countdown Hong Kong has confronted since 1982. The countdown forced Hong Kong to enter a circular time and to experience the prearranged calamity in the future. Thus, I contend that this film rehearses a demise of Hong Kong, which exacerbates, rather than alleviates, the anxiety and pain associated with the traumatic experience.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This study presents a novel approach for the quantification and classification of pulmonary contusion (PC). PC is a common thoracic injury, affecting up to 25% of patients sustaining blunt chest trauma. [1] Contusion volume at the time of hospitalization has been shown to be an independent predictor for the development of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), with the risk of ARDS increasing sharply with PC in excess of 20% by volume. [1] Despite the frequency of the injury and strong positive correlation between contusion volume and outcome, there are relatively few contusion quantification methods in the current literature. One such study utilized chest x-ray film to score PC according the amount of lung appearing to be damaged. [2] The study concluded that despite the limitations in using chest x-rays, a PC scoring system may be of value in determining the need for ventilator assistance and predicting outcome. A potentially more accurate approach to quantifying the severity of PC is through the use of computed tomography (CT) chest scans. CT is the preferred modality for obtaining volumetric pulmonary contusion data since the complete three-dimensional lung anatomy is captured. In this work a semi-automated approach is used to analyze PC in an isolated model of lung contusion in the rat. [3, 4] The CT-based approach enables the PC to be precisely quantified as the lesion progresses in time. The technique distinguishes the severity of the contusion by analyzing the composition of bands in the Hounsfield Unit (HU) range of lung image masks.

Abstract:

Abstract:
DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.4995/LC2015.2015.652

Abstract:

Abstract:
