Full textSince the early 90s, José Sanchis Sinisterra has held his theory of “the aesthetic of the translucent” as the mainstay of his theatre. The translucent is what allows light to pass through but prevents perception of distinct images. After an introduction on the emergence of the “translucent” in the career of the playwright, this thesis will provide a definition of the theoretical principles of this aesthetic. The new sciences which emerged in the 20th century (quantum mechanics, chaos theory…) have changed the modes of representation of reality and become a source of inspiration for artists. In Sinisterra’s drama, this influence is at work thematically but also aesthetically. The mechanisms which break away from transparency are that of fragmentation and vagueness which blurs limits, questions dichotomies, thus breeding ambiguity and complexity. This study shows how these mechanisms can be applied to drama: fable, time, space, sound, characters, language. As a counterpoint to these sources of opacity, this work argues that the translucent sheds two types of lights. The first light generated by the author is incomplete but also protean, sparkling and poetical. The second cast by the receiver sheds light onto the work by constantly decoding it. Therefore, the receiver becomes the co-author of a variety of meanings. Eventually, what this aesthetic underpins is the translucent nature of the relationship with Oneself, with the Other and with the Postmodern world, but also with the work of art. By focusing on the sources of opacity, this type of theatre challenges the spectator to combine freedom and responsibility so that his vision remains clear in spite of the haziness

Full textThe reproduction of nature in computer-added applications knows a significant revolution. Translucidity enhances the realism virtual images. Light absorption simulation has taken profits of the abundant scientific literature in physics and optics, and of the last advancements in graphics cards technologies, to establish itself as a new branch in image synthesis research. In the scope of this thesis, we describe two different methods in real-time rendering of translucent objects. The first method allows real-time deformation of these objects, by means of flexible texture atlases. In the second, we focused on porcelain. This material is famous for its translucidity and its whiteness. Porcelain rendering is achieved after the acquisition of its optical properties and the use of Kubelka-Munk model

Full textWhat nature of look do the artist and the beholder cast upon the picture? what are the qualities inherent in a painting that make a work of art? this essay attempts to analyse these questions and offer some answers based on the theory that an inconscious desire, shaped by social imaginary dimensions, predetermines the look, conditions the quality of the pictural environment and conveys its specific power. The first part of the essay questions lacan's theory of the look, then introduces three governing media - transparent, translucent, opaque - as controllers of the pictural framework. What roles do they play? the families of look are then differentiated and analysed, and the plastic ators specific to the work of art are defined. These conceptual tools are tested in the second part of the essay. According to this thesis, translucent - the "veil" created by the renaissance - is one of the governing media which symbolise the law within the pictural environment. If the artist does not recognise this law, if he doe not also try to subvert it, the painting will escape from his control. It would seem that the translucent starded to disappear with the immpressionist and that it has completely. Ceased to exist in a part of contemporary art

Full textWhen an anterior tooth is restorated, the whole remaining tissue protection technique and functional recuperation of the dental element can be compromised if the choice of the color of the restorative material is not adequate. The familiarity with the color and light interaction with matter theories may help with the task of choosing the restorative material shade. The challenge in searching for an ideal restorative material in its esthetic function was always obtaining the proper translucency of dental enamel. However, this translucency makes the restorative material suffer an influence of the background color, which can be the protection material color or, more commonly, the dentine color. Concerning the odontologic esthetic restorative activities, it was possible to conclude from this work that: 1) Colorimetry can be an important way for the selection and communication of the restorative material shades; 2) The results show that the background color has a large influence on the final color of the restoration; and 3) The shade guides must be reformulated so that it take into consideration the thickness of the restorative material and background color.

To evaluate, map and characterize the effects of the accelerated aging kinetics of high translucency zirconias, this study was split into 2 parts: One part evaluating the superficial changes after in vitro hydrothermal aging and the second part aiming the effects of this aging on the mechanical properties of those ceramics. 117 Y-TZP (VITA YZ, VITA HT, InCoris TZI) blocks were cut, 39 for each commercial zirconia, sintered (1530 ºC, 2h) and assigned to 13 groups with 3 samples each: One being a control, aging-free group, and 12 groups that were prematurely aged hydrothermally at 134 ºC and constant pressure of 2 bars through 6, 10, 14, 18, 22, 26, 30, 40, 60, 80, 100 and 140 hours. XRD was used to quantify the amount of zirconia phase transformation (tetragonalmonoclinic) on different depths of the material by swapping the anode tube (Cr, Co, and Cu). An aging kinetic curve was made for each depth for the 3 commercial zirconias. To evaluate the effects of the hydrothermal aging on the mechanical properties, Y-TZP blocks were rounded to a cilindrical shape. 270 discs were cut, 90 for each kind, sintered as mentioned above and assigned to 3 groups: C-Control; E1- Aged through 26h and E2- Aged through 140h. Disks were then tested in a universal testing machine (EMIC) under a load of 1000 kg till fracture of the specimen and the surface was evaluated under SEM. The aging kinetics curves work similarly for all the YTZP used in this study, characterized by phase transformation ascendant and plateau stabilization as far as the aging goes. Superficial layers present higher concentrations of monoclinic phase as it decreases in deeper layers. Hydrothermal aging through 140h decreased VITA YZ toughness by 17% (681,78 ± 121,18) when compared with its control group (841,69 ± 56,01), while high translucency zirconias didn't show any statistical differences after aging.Hydrothermal aging does induce martensitic phase transformation from the outside-to-inside the material and doesn't affect the mechanical properties of VITA HT and INCORIS TZI ceramics, while it decreased the material toughness of VITA YZ zirconia.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate in vitro the translucency parameter and lightness using enamel composite resin with different thicknesses, based or not on the Vita Classical shade guide. An epoxic resin device was developed and built by stereolithography process to enable the manufacture of specimens with the shape of an upper central incisor using composite resin. The specimens had layers of palatal enamel, dentin, and three diferente thicknesses of buccal enamel: 0.4mm, 0.8mm and 1.2mm. The composites tested were Filtek Supreme Ultra (3M ESPE), Miris 2 (Coltène) and Ena HRi (Micerium). The spectrophotometer Vita Easy Shade Vita Zahnfabrik) was used to perform three color measurements of each specimen. Measurement means were calculated and through statistical analysis translucency parameter and lightness were also calculated. The results showed significant differences between the composites used and their thicknesses. The values of lightness were higher for lightness and the translucency was higher for the composite Miris 2. It can be concluded that the color parameters evaluated depend on the composite used and their thickness.
