Abstract:
The differences between the Arabic and English linguistic systems and legal cultures have long been a fundamental challenge in legal translation. Examining how the dissimilarities between the Saudi and English legal cultures affect the Arabic-English legal translation has received little attention from researchers. Therefore, this critical analysis aims to examine the Arabic-English translation of 12 Saudi legal articles to identify the linguistic and cultural factors involved in the translation process. Since research that addresses the difficulties and challenges of translating the legal discourse is of undeniable significance and studies that examined the Saudi legal discourse and its translation are scarce; therefore, this study attempts to contribute to the literature by analyzing several Saudi Legal Articles and their English translations to define the challenges of translating legal terms from Arabic into English. The study adopted Šarčević’s (2000) functional equivalence framework to study the Saudi Legal Articles and their official English translations. This framework was selected because it is well suited to examine the equivalent level of the legal terms and their translations, which is the main objective of this study. This study attempts to analyze different legal terms that characterize the selected Saudi legal articles and their official English translations. The investigated legal terms include religious, culture-specific, archaic, and doublets. This study revealed that translating Arabic religious and culture-specific terms and doublets is challenging, whereas translating Arabic archaic words is much easier.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine translation in the context of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) by taking the example of the English term “impairment” in IAS 36, and following it into 19 translations. The paper then examines the terms used for impairment in English translations of annual reports provided by firms. Consideration is given to the best approach for translating regulations and whether that is also suitable for the translation of annual reports. Design/methodology/approach The two empirical parts of the paper involve: first, identifying the terms for impairment used in 19 official translations of IAS 36, and second, examining English-language translations of reports provided by 393 listed firms from 11 major countries. Findings Nearly all the terms used for “impairment” in translations of IAS 36 do not convey the message of damage to assets. In annual reports translated into English, many terms are misleading in that they do not mention impairment, peaking at 39 per cent in German and Italian reports in one year. Research limitations/implications Researchers should note that the information related to impairment in international databases is likely to contain errors, and the authors recommend that data should be hand-collected and then carefully checked by experts. The authors make suggestions for further research. Practical implications Translators of regulations should aim to convey the messages of the source documents, but translators of annual reports should not look only at the reports but also consult the terminology in the original regulations. The authors also suggest implications for regulators and analysts. Originality/value The paper innovates by separately considering regulations and annual reports. The authors examine a key accounting term systematically into a wide range of official translations. The core section of the paper is a new field of research: an empirical study of the translations of firms’ financial statements.

Abstract:
The present study aimed to provide a contrastive analysis of two English translations of the famous Arabic poem known in English as “Let days do what they will” by Mohammad ibn Idris al-Shafi’i. The two English translations were produced by two different translation scholars in the language pair Arabic and English. The analysis focused on how the translators dealt with the most important features of poetry when translating the Arabic poem into English. Such features included form, meaning, sound and imagery. The findings revealed some similarities and differences in both translations with reference to the above-mentioned features. It is recommended that more research be conducted on either Arabic-English translation of poetry or English-Arabic translation of poetry as this kind of research seems to be relatively scarce.

Abstract:
Abstract Research focused on the cognitive processes surrounding bilingual language representation has revealed the important role that translation ambiguity plays in how languages are stored in memory (Tokowicz & Kroll, 2007). In addition, translation of emotionally related information has been shown to be challenging because a direct translation does not always exist (Basnight-Brown & Altarriba, 2014). The focus of the current study was to explore the processing of ambiguous words for translations that differ in orthography. In Experiment 1, Chinese-English bilinguals translated concrete and abstract words that differed in the number of translations across languages. In Experiment 2, emotion words were introduced into the context, in order to examine differences in emotion translation across languages. The results revealed that words with a single translation were produced faster and more accurately than words that had multiple translations. Finally, translation of emotional stimuli was faster when translating Chinese words as compared to English words.

Abstract:
This article studies linguistic landscape (LL) from a translational perspective. It aims to examine the translation strategies adopted in translating texts on non-official public signs and assess the quality of their translations. For accomplishing this, the author analysed a corpus of one hundred photos of public signage representing bilingual (translational) content based on two criteria. Namely, the translation strategies employed in translating public signs and the appropriateness of public signage translations for their target readers. The study concludes that several translation strategies are used to convey the informative content of public signs, such as transference, word-for-word translation, generalisation, and omission. Furthermore, the study reveals cases of inaccurate translations that can be attributed to the translator’s linguistic incompetence, improper use of translation strategies, and linguistic incompatibilities between English and Arabic. Such mistranslations distort the informative content of the original text and give rise to different interpretations. The study’s implication is to draw attention to the importance of translational content of public signs as it serves as a medium of communication and reflects the image of linguistic cityscape.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper proposes a model that addresses students’ common errors in English-Arabic-English translation. My study documents an attempt to develop a new interconnectedness between students’ errors and translation theories that may improve their performance when translating different genres. Consistent and repeated errors produced by tens of students working on the same texts were compiled and analyzed. The errors showed lack of knowledge of genre structure, functional analysis, appropriate intervention as well as lack of understanding of the wider context upon which appropriate decisions can be made. The methodology expounded in this study involves describing and categorizing students’ errors. It suggests solutions grounded in translation theory and proposes comparisons with professional translations. This methodology proved to be very successful during my teaching experience at the Lebanese University.1 The model solution developed in this study draws on genre analysis, text-typology, text-functionality, register analysis, and equivalence. The application of the model solution minimized students’ errors to a large extent and enabled them to provide accurate descriptions of different translation strategies and critically assess professional translations.

Abstract:
Abstract The present research analyses Hungarian and English target-language translations of contemporary Finnish poems. The translation solutions of culturally-bound lexical elements are compared in both Finnish-Hungarian and Finnish-English translation directions. The analysis is carried out using a text corpus comprising Hungarian and English translations of Finnish poems published after 1950. The text corpus consists of 160 Finnish source poems and their 160 Hungarian and 160 English target-language translations. The objective of the research is to reveal the cultural aspects of the translation of poetry and to answer the question as to what types of translation solutions literary translators use when translating culturally-bound lexical elements in Finnish poems into Hungarian and English. Results show that English-language translators of contemporary Finnish poems more frequently use translation solutions which are less creative and do not stray far from the original source language text. Hungarian translators, on the other hand, are more courageous in deviating from the source text and adapting their translations to the target language. This can be explained by reference to the two translation contexts or as a result of genre-specific reasons.

Abstract:
The study aims to find out the reader-centred & author-centred translation of Ashtadhyayi of Panini, an Indian linguist of 5th century BC, who compiled the world oldest, shortest and ever first linguistic book in Sanskrit language focusing on all linguistic aspects, aiming at protecting the sounds of Vedas; the holy book of Hinduism. The linguistic importance of Sanskrit was firstly mentioned by William Jones during his famous address in India, whereas the linguistic phenomena were discussed by Ferdinand de Saussure in nineteenth century. The book is first translated into English in 1891by Sarisa Chandra Vasu with a large number of Sanskrit Words which gained a momentous fame in all the linguistic circles. Due to which Ashtadhyayi was studied widely by English professors and students illuminating their linguistic horizons by coining unique ambiguous precise 4000 rules under the name of ‘Sutra’. Just after this English translational creation of Ashtadhyayi a large number of translations were done by the native Hindu scholars and even by western Sanskritests. Therefore, a huge number of commentaries, studies and articles were written by European and native linguists and at the same time it was translated into other languages. The book and all its translations are available online. The purpose of this paper is to collect all the English translations of Ashtadhyayi throughout the history since 5th BC to the age of globalization and digitalization, then putting them into a translational categorization according to various kinds of translations finding out the most comprehensive and faithful translations among them and the types of translation strategies applied by the translators in translating this unique cryptic linguistic book.

Abstract:
This paper points on the use of design thinking in fundamental translation class. Design thinking is an approach to produce the best solution of a problem. This approach includes five steps, namely empathize, define (the problem), ideate, prototype, and test. The researchers focus on the translation’s acceptability of idioms since this topic is usually problematic to students. Therefore, a case study was conducted in this research. The participants of this research were 20 students of fundamental translation class in English Literature Study Program, Universitas Jenderal Soedirman. The students translated some idioms using design thinking and their translations were randomly selected. Observation was conducted to examine the students’ behaviours in translating idioms. After that, the researchers rated their translations’ acceptability. The results indicate that design thinking’s application in translating idioms produce acceptable translations. Furthermore, this study can be beneficial for translators and translation teachers to gain acceptability in translation.

Abstract:
The translation of Chinese medical books is characterized by language, cultural connotation and cognitive domain background, which makes the translators encounter different levels of difficulty in the process of translation and form different translations accordingly. This paper takes the construal theory in cognitive linguistics as a guide, analyzes the important role of four kinds of means of construal in the process of translating Chinese medical books, and analyzes the different English translations of JGL under the construal theory, analyzes that different translations reflect different cognitive mechanisms of the translators, and comes to the conclusion that the translations should maximally reflect the cognitive points of reference of the authors at that time, so as to maximize the translations. It is also concluded that the translation should maximally reflect the author's cognitive reference point so as to maximize the closeness of the translation to the original text, aiming to provide theoretical guidance and reference for the English translation of Chinese medical books.

Translating short stories presents unique challenges and complexities that demand careful examination and analysis. This study explores the intricacies of translating this literary form by examining the strategies employed by translators to overcome obstacles. This study focuses on the short story "Cat in the Rain" by Ernest Hemingway and three Arabic translations, analyzing the approaches employed by translators. By investigating techniques such as domestication, adaptation, and literal translation, this study identifies the strengths and limitations of each approach and provides insights into how translators tackle the unique challenges of short story translation. The study found that the different Arabic translations used different translation strategies. These strategies include word-for-word translation, literal translation, faithful translation, semantic translation, adaptation translation, free translation, and idiomatic translation.

Abstract:
The Malay stories of Pelanduk yang Bijak, Peniup Seruling and Seuncang Padi were translated to English, and analysed to identify the translation problems. The procedures were also investigated to find solutions for the problems using translation procedures as the framework for data analysis. After the translation of the stories, the source and target texts were analysed to identify problems and procedures. The findings of the study indicated two types of problems in the Malay-English translations of the stories; structural or semantic problems, and problems arising from cultural differences. Among various translation procedures used in the translations, literal translation was the most common procedure in the translation of the Malay stories. The findings from translations and the analyses in this study could be utilised in translator and interpreter training classrooms. Finding solutions to the translation problems could improve translators’ ability to better theorise while translating, and thus produce “good” translations, particularly in the translation of literary works from Malay to English. This study could have pedagogical significance, as the Malay short stories contain moral lessons by which Malay culture could be further introduced and “exported” to the English-speaking audience through literature.

During the COVID-19 outbreak, the China Academy of Translation translated and officially released five groups of Key Words to Understand China: The Fight Against COVID-19 for daily precautions, policy publicity, and information dissemination. Based on the translations and relevant data from Chinese and English media, this study makes a tentative analysis of the linguistic, ideological, and cultural features of English used in the translations. The findings are that China English is outstanding with respect to translating some Chinese-specific words and expressions in the translations, which generally results from the method of literal rendering. It is suggested that literal translation and transliteration can be used more frequently in English texts related to big events in order to strengthen the Chinese characteristics of China English as a major variety of world Englishes.

Abstract:
Abstract Ambiguity in translation is highly prevalent, and has consequences for second-language learning and for bilingual lexical processing. To better understand this phenomenon, the current study compared the determinants of translation ambiguity across four sets of translation norms from English to Spanish, Dutch, German and Hebrew. The number of translations an English word received was correlated across these different languages, and was also correlated with the number of senses the word has in English, demonstrating that translation ambiguity is partially determined by within-language semantic ambiguity. For semantically-ambiguous English words, the probability of the different translations in Spanish and Hebrew was predicted by the meaning-dominance structure in English, beyond the influence of other lexical and semantic factors, for bilinguals translating from their L1, and translating from their L2. These findings are consistent with models postulating direct access to meaning from L2 words for moderately-proficient bilinguals.

Abstract:
This study investigated patterns of reciprocal English-Persian translation of collocations by Iranian EFL learners. The participants of the study were 20 intermediate and advanced level students at different private language schools in Tehran city. The instruments used in the study was a researcher-made questionnaires used for translating collocations and involved 60 items including ten collocation types. The questionnaire was translated into Persian. Then, the English and Persian versions were given to the participants to complete. The collected data was analyzed using the SPSS software. The results showed that there were meaningful differences between the two translations in ‘verb + noun’; ‘prepositions of time, place and manner; ‘verb + adverb’; and ‘adjective + preposition’ correlations. The most frequently used strategy used for translation of collocations in English-Persian and also in Persian-English translations was literal translation which is a type of direct translation. These findings indicate that collocational differences between Persian and English bring about errors in the production of Iranian EFL learners and a good number of errors in translations of collocational errors are directly caused by interference of learners’ mother tongue.

Abstract:
Most African names have sociocultural identities, which convey thoughts, traditions, fortunes, conditions, histories, and other features. Translating African indigenous names from Yoruba into French and English transcends Saussure’s postulation of signified–signifier arbitrariness (Saussure,1975). Previous studies in African onomastic translation have concentrated mostly on Europhone translation, with insufficient scholarly attention paid to the Yoruba-French onomastic translation. Therefore, this work explores Yoruba names in a literary onomastic translation with a view to bringing to fore the connotative embodiments of African names. Establishing techniques to employ in translating African names into European languages like French and English. The study adapts Newmark (1988) and Moya (2000) approaches to name translation. The content analysis was employed in the investigation and interpretation of the data that were purposively selected from two D. O. Fagunwa’s Yoruba novels – Ògbójú Ọdẹ nínú Igbó Irúnmalẹ̀ (2005) and Ìrèké-Oníbùdó (2005) –and their French translations – Le preux chasseur dans la forêt infestée de démons (1989) and La fortune sourit aux audacieux(1989) – by Olaoye Abioye respectively; as well as Louis Camara’s, an Ivorian francophone, translation of Soyinka’s translation The Forest of a Thousand Daemons (1982); originally from Fagunwa’s Ogboju into French-- La Forêt aux Mille Demons (2010). Abstract:
The advance of corpus-based methodology in translation studies has greatly enhanced our understanding of the nature of translational language. While most research efforts have focused on identifying the unique features of translations carried out by professionals, comparatively fewer studies have investigated the linguistic features of student translations. In this corpus-based study, we examine if learner translations carried out by Hong Kong students exhibit lexical simplification features vis-à-vis comparable written texts. The study is based on two comparable corpora: the International Corpus of English in Hong Kong (ICE-HK) and the Parallel Learner Translation Corpus (PLTC) compiled at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Following Laviosa (1998), we compare four main lexical features (lexical density, type-token ratio, core vocabulary coverage, and list head coverage) to investigate if student translations show a simplification trend. The results demonstrate that Chinese-to-English translation is not lexically simpler than English as a Second Language (ESL) writing. Furthermore, it is lexically denser than ESL writing. Our study aims to provide new insights into learner translation as a form of constrained communication.

The aim of this study is to use matching techniques and language mistake analysis to figure out how accurate Google Translate is, especially when translating text from English to Indonesian. As a source text, one passage from Johann Gottfried Herder's book "Selected Writings on Aesthetics" was used to gather information. After that, Google Translate (GT) changes the info. When you look at GT translation data, you have to explain the matching technique and compare it with tools that measure the amount of translation matching. This way, mistakes in the language can be found and the quality of the GT translation can be judged. The study found that (1) out of the 13 source data, only 4 data (or 31%) are accurate translations, 7 data (or 54%) are less accurate translations, and 2 data (15%) are incorrect translations. right on. This means that the accuracy is only 31%. About half of it is less clear at the same time. Some people are hard to understand. (2) It turns out that GT can do good translations if it only uses literal translation and matching methods. (3) Since GT only uses textual and transposition translation strategies, it might make translations less accurate if more complicated strategies use transposition, modulation, or description together. (3) But if only a modulation technique is needed, GT can't do anything but make wrong translations. It doesn't make sense because it can only use the translation approach. Because it used a direct translation approach, GT failed to translate one case and made a translation that was wrong. In the end, Google Translate can only correctly translate English text into Indonesian when it uses a literal matching approach. This is especially true in this case.

The present study is an attempt to raise some points that should be considered when translating the Quranic Text into English. We have looked into some samples of translations, selected from well known English translations of the Holy Quran and critically examined them. There were some errors in those translations, due to linguistic factors, owing to the differences between the Arabic and the English Language systems. Some errors were due to the cultural background of the translator which intentionally or unintentionally has affected the translation. Many samples were discussed and suggestions for corrections were made. Then further recommendations were given to be used as guidelines for similar future attempts. We concluded that the simulation of old words in drafting a translation does not fit with the English language as a target language. As this use of archaic stylistics would lead to further complications, which makes the language of translation look strange and complicated

Abstract:
This study explores the performance of machine translation of literary texts from English to Chinese. The study compares two machine translation systems, Bing Translator and Youdao Machine Translation, using selected texts from the novel “Nineteen eighty-four” by George Orwell. The data collection includes the original source texts, their machine-generated translations by Bing Translator and Youdao Machine Translation, and comparisons with human reference translations to assess the performance of these systems. The research’s focal point is to evaluate the accuracy, fluency, and appropriateness of translations generated by these two machine translation systems, while also analyzing the post-editing effort required to enhance the quality of the final machine-translated product. The study revealed that despite the presence of flaws in both machine translation systems, Youdao Machine Translation demonstrated superior performance, especially in accurately translating technical terms and idiomatic expressions, making it the more effective option overall. Nevertheless, the translations from Youdao Machine Translation required more substantial post-editing efforts to improve fluency and readability. Conversely, Bing Translator yielded more fluent and natural-sounding translations, albeit with a need for improved accuracy in translating technical terms and idiomatic expressions. The study concludes that while machine translation systems are capable of generating reasonable translations for literary texts, human post-editing remains essential to ensure the final output’s accuracy, fluency, and appropriateness. The study underscores the importance of selecting the appropriate machine translation system based on the nature of the text being translated. It also highlights the critical role of post-editing in refining the quality of machine-translated outputs, suggesting that while machine translation can provide a solid foundation, human intervention is indispensable for achieving optimal accuracy, fluency, and overall readability in literary translations.

Abstract:
This article explores the English translations of contemporary Ukrainian war poetry featured in the two anthologies Lysty z Ukrainy (Letters from Ukraine, 2016) and Words for War: New Poems from Ukraine (2017), through the prism of Jacques Derrida’s concept of “relevant.” It argues that although the economy of the original poems could not always be sustained, these translations nonetheless remain relevant primarily thanks to what they do rather than what they say. After contextualizing the recent (re)emergence of war poems as a genre of Ukrainian literature and providing an overview of the two translation anthologies, the article compares the Ukrainian originals with their English translations and discusses the various translation challenges. It then returns to Derrida’s own case study to extend the modifier “relevant” beyond its “economic” parameters to apply it more broadly to translation’s socio-political significance. It concludes with a discussion of how the two anthologies in question reflect the state of the reception of contemporary Ukrainian literature in the English-speaking world and how the translations they feature inform our understanding of the (un)translatability of poetry.

Abstract:
This research is an extension of Nouraldeen (2020). The principal objective of this project is to investigate the English translation of complete taḍmīn in the Qur’an and shed light on other types of taḍmīn in the Qur’an. ِAlthough complete taḍmīn is probably not as numerous as other types of taḍmīn in the Qur’an, it deserves much attention for the interesting additional meaning it provides. Two sources are used to collect the āyāt (verses) that involve complete taḍmīn. Four English translations of the second sūrah (chapter) produced by Arab translators are analysed and assessed with a suggested translation that is believed to improve the current translations. None of the four translations are aware of taḍmīn when translating the Qur’an and this suggests a further empirical study which to elicit the views of some Qur’an translators with regards to why taḍmīn is not given attention and how it can be rendered. One unexpected finding is that some Qur’an translations are not consistent when translating same words in different āyāt (verses). This study is intended to be part of an ongoing work which studies and assesses the English translation of all āyāt (verses) that include complete taḍmīn as they appear in the same arrangement of the suwar (chapters) in the Qur’an.

Secondary translations of Turkish literary works represent a unique translational chal- lenge, considering that the original text is written in a language that differs significantly in structure from the Indo-European languages, from which these translations are mostly made. By contrasting the Turkish onomastic words with their transcription into Serbian, the prob- lems of the translation appear when translating from a translation. Although in the transla- tion of Turkish works from English and German, the language of the mediator, a considerable number of correctly chosen solutions can be found in the transcription of anthroponyms and toponyms, the analysis carried out shows that the occurring errors are most often due to the nature of the language of the mediator or due to the negligence of the translator. This situation supports translators’ opinion that translating from a translation should be used only when direct translation is not possible.

Abstract:
Chinese poetry translation is currently dominated by the rhymed translations of poetry represented by Xu Yuanchong and the unrhymed translations of poetry represented by Weng Xianliang. Both of these poetry translation methods have provided us with valuable practical experience. However, volumes 1 to 3 of Xi Jinping: The Governance of China, as authoritative interpretations of Chinese wisdom, Chinese plans, and Chinese theories, contain a large number of ancient Chinese poems. However, in the English version of the three volumes, the English translations of the relevant verses do not copy the existing translations, of famous translators, but instead, use the paraphrasing method to render these verses. By collecting representative verses on different topics and comparing the similarities and differences between translators’ translations of the same poems in the three volumes, the author summarizes the different paths of poetry translation, explores the feasibility and merits of the paraphrasing method as the main path of translating poetry in political texts, and provides a practical basis for promoting the paraphrasing method of poetry translation.

The purpose of this study is to compare and discuss how well the publisher, ChatGPT, and NMT have preserved 'naturalness' in translating TOEIC textbooks. In order to engage in such a discussion, we compared and analyzed all the translations in the beginner-level TOEIC textbook's explanation booklet provided by Company H. These were classified into four categories for analysis: firstly, 'violation of naturalness' due to excessive use of foreign language, secondly, 'violation of naturalness' due to indiscriminate use of passive/active voice, thirdly, 'violation of naturalness' due to abbreviated translation, and fourthly, 'violation of naturalness' due to literal translation of vocabulary. The analysis results revealed that none of the three types of translations perfectly preserved 'naturalness.' In particular, Company H's textbook translations required a slightly more learner-oriented naturalness than ChatGPT or machine translations.

Abstract:
Ideology is a major issue in Translation Studies. With a case study of the Chinese translations of English news headlines concerning the South China Sea disputes on the website of www.ftchinese.com, this paper attempts to provide insights into the translation of ideologies in news in the Chinese context. In the theoretical framework of critical discourse analysis, the ideological factors underlying the disparity between the English news headlines and their Chinese translations are explored. The three-dimensional model of analysis put forward by Fairclough is modified and adopted in this paper as the basic steps of analysis: firstly, describe the differences between the original and their translations; secondly, associate them with the social reality; finally, account for those differences. In addition, to demonstrate how translators maneuvered to reach a compromise with the antagonistic ideologies which may set difficulties either for the news to win the acceptance of Chinese online readers or pass the Chinese government censorship, this paper offers an analysis of the translation strategies adopted in those Chinese translations, such as substitution, omission as well as the more subtle strategies, including changes of modality and actor. It is found that in the Chinese translations of the English news headlines, translators’ priority is on producing translations suitable to target readers and censors' ideology, rather than linguistic equivalents. Therefore, translating ideology-loaded texts adds a new way to understand translation and ideological explorations in Translation Studies have great potentials.

Abstract:
The question of image in literary studies and in recent years in Translation Studies is one of the most problematic innature. In the present study an attempt was made to define the nature of translating linguistic constructions – evokingimages in the mind of reader – in English novels and their rendered versions in Persian translations. In this studyseven types of images (visual, auditory, olfactory, gustatory, tactile, kinesthetic and organic) in two English novelsand their rendered versions in Persian were analyzed based on two theoretical frameworks, the first one is Jiang’sImage-Based Model to Literary Translation (2008) by which the nature of translation of images were examined andthe other is Chesterman’s translation strategies (1997) which help to systematize translation strategies adopted bytranslators in rewriting the images in English novels. The results have shown that in most of the cases the images thatare intended by original author have been changed in the translations, and the aesthetic experience of the ST reader isdifferent from that of the TT reader.

Abstract:
The present research paper aims at investigating the underlying stylistic problems in the translation of the Quranic patience (Al-saber) words into English with particular reference to Surratt Āl-’Imrān, that is in English translations of Abdel-Haleem, Khan, and Mohammed Taj Al-Din Al-Hilai and Pickthall. Also, the study aims at examining how the three translators cope with these underlying stylistic problems in their translations. The three English translations of the Quranic patience (Al-saber) words from Surrat Āl-’Imrān were intentionally chosen and examined by the researcher. Varied underlying stylistic problems in the three translations were investigated as well. The study reveals that there are some underlying stylistic problems in the translation of the meaning of the Quranic patience (Al-saber) words into English in Surrat Āl-‘Imrān. In addition, some types of the underlying stylistic problems and semantic losses in the translation of the Quranic patience (Al-saber) words within Surratt Āl-’Imrān whilst translating some lexemes into English, are attributed to the inadequate background of the contextual and stylistic, and cultural causes. The understanding of the original meaning of the Quranic patience (Al-saber) words will certainly help the translator to identify reasonable relevant equivalents, which is in line with the spirit of the original work and the limitations of the target language receptor.

Abstract:
This study aims to compare and discuss the Chinese-English translations of Huniu’s (虎妞) personalized language in four different English translations of the Chinese novel Luotuo Xiangzi, supported by Nida’s theory of “functional equivalence” and with a demonstration of the features of Huniu’s personalized language that lead to difficulties in translation as a framework for the analysis. The analysis reveals that, when translating Huniu’s personalized language, the translators adopted various translation methods, including euphemism, literal translation, deletion, and free translation. The findings indicate that the use of euphemisms as a translation strategy does not support maintaining the character’s language features and style when translating the swear words used by the character. Proactive changes in the tone of the speech of the character in translation impacts the reproduction of that character’s personality and image. In addition, Huniu’s language style of the Beijing dialect is difficult to maintain in translation. These findings serve as a reference for the Chinese-English translation of a character’s personalized language in novels to facilitate the dissemination of Chinese literature around the world.

Abstract:
Abstract Within Western culture, gender is frequently interpreted in terms of binarism (male versus female), derived from biological sex at birth. Nevertheless, there is an accelerating percentage of non-binary and transgender people, who are not related to binary nomenclature, and they also need to resort to legal documentation and their renderings into other languages. This fact becomes a troublesome issue that must be nowadays solved, especially when translating into Spanish, a grammatical gender language, from English, a non-grammatical gender language. In this paper we will first select a corpus of eight British legal documents representing highly demanded translation briefs. We will then search for 15 problematic lexical items, searching for their lexicographic definitions and translations, and we will later resort to their most feasible translations into the Spanish language, considering both gendered translations and genderless ones. Our research shows how the Spanish language has its own translation techniques, especially paraphrasing, to be able to provide the English-Spanish target readership with binary legal terms, and especially with non-binary ones.

Abstract:
This article examines problems arising from biliterate performances in English and Chinese in the context of the sociolinguistics of Singapore. The questions asked include: What are the ramifications of translating Chinese literature carrying anglophobic themes into English? How might translation displace anglophobic readings from Chinese literary works? What kind of identity discourse do self-translation practices engender? The article examines three cases of cross-linguistic practice as biliterate modalities in Singapore, with an eye on the identity discourse emanating from the translational space between English and Chinese in each case. In the first case, it is argued that the English translation of a Chinese poem with an anglophobic stance triggers an ironic self-reflexivity on the part of the target text reader and has the potential to exacerbate the cultural anxiety faced by the Chinese-speaking Self in the source text. The second case presents an example where the anglophobic interpretation of a Chinese play can potentially be ‘unread’ through the homogenization of code-switching through translation. In the final case of a self-translating playwright, it is found that English-Chinese and Chinese-English translations establish an asymmetric symbiosis whereby translation creates an interliminal space in which a hybrid identity discourse is negotiated. The three cases illustrate the tensions and paradoxes residing in the translational space between English and Chinese in Singapore, pointing to the problematic of interand cross-cultural communication in the multilingual state.

Abstract This study aims at assessing and translating the verb Akhadha ‘أخذ’ in the Glorious Quran into English. Since the verb in question has several meanings in the Glorious Quran according to the context, it should be well treated by the translator of the religious texts in general and Quranic texts in particular. Therefore, a number of Quranic ayas that contain the verb will be selected and will be subjected to translation assessment in order to measure the accuracy of the translations of the verb ‘Akhadha’ in English. If the translations of the verb are inadequate, the researcher will give the suggested translations pursuant to the contexts of the said ayas. It is hypothesized that the translators of the Quranic texts including the verb in question might encounter difficulties in translating the verb and as corollary might produce inadequate translations as a result of the various rhetorical senses the verb has. Those rhetorical senses of the verb might be deemed as difficult for translators.

Owing to the recent rise of neural language translation, a paradigm shift has been witnessed regarding the role of translators and reviewers. As neural machine translation is increasingly more capable of modelling how natural languages work, the traditional tasks of translators are being gradually replaced by new challenges. More emphasis is placed on pre- and post-editing (revision) skills and competences, presumably enabling the production of higher quality and near human-made translations. In my paper, I attempt to demonstrate through the qualitative and quantitative comparison of machine-translated legal texts (acts) to human-translated ones the relevant challenges and dynamic contrasts arising in the process of translating. Through the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the original Hungarian (source language) Criminal Code and its English (target language) machine and human translations, I aim to highlight the peculiar challenges emerging in the process of translation. I also aim to demonstrate what patterns can be observed in translations produced by human and non-human translators.

The emergence of ChatGPT as an AI chatbot has marked significant progress in multiple-language translation. However, concerns persist regarding its capability to precisely translate various languages. This research aims to find a more effective method for improving the quality of Korean-to-English translation by using ChatGPT for EFL learners. To achieve this, EFL learners were asked to make questionnaires to assess the overall awareness and understanding of ChatGPT among their peers. Subsequently, they were instructed to select among Korean-to-English translations generated by ChatGPT and Korean-to-English translations done by human translators, providing reasons for their choices. The script of the film <i>Minari</i> (Lee, 2021) was collected and ChatGPT was used to translate it from Korean to English. These translations, both by the human translator and ChatGPT, were manually evaluated and a comparative analysis of the two translations was conducted. Finally, any errors in ChatGPT’s Korean-to-English translations were addressed by providing additional prompts to achieve the best possible translations. The result showed that overall translations were significantly enhanced by the prompts and demonstrated accuracy in translation. This finding demonstrates that EFL learners should make the most use of ChatGPT as a language learning and translation tool to improve their language communication skills.

Abstract:
This article explores the peculiarities of translating military vocabulary from the Old Russian literary monument “The Tale of Igor’s Campaign” into Russian and English languages through the analysis of translations by D.S. Likhachov, O.V. Tvorogov (modern Russian language), V. Nabokov, and I. Petrova (English language). The study employed methods such as the method of complete sampling, contextual analysis method, comparative method, and quantitative analysis method. The research focused on 34 lexical units used in 128 contexts. Based on the conducted study, the following conclusions can be drawn. (1) Translators of the aforementioned work into Russian mostly replaced archaic words with contemporary ones etymologically related to the original word, while preserving archaic words to convey historical color in translations. (2) Translations of the work into English showed translators’ tendency towards fidelity to the original text through the use of full and partial equivalents, approximate translation, and the method of generalization (selecting a word with broader meaning). Thus, the analysis of lexical units and their translation methods into modern Russian and English languages revealed translators' inclination to choose the translation variant closest to the original unit.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper consists of three parts; the first part examines the definition of “idiom” as a technical term, primarily from a translational perspective, and the strategies usually employed by Arab translators when translating English idioms. The second part analyses the Arabic translations given in a sample of two hundred and fifty-three English idioms in terms of strategies and the significance of their frequency. This analysis reveals four important things: 1. Statistically, the most common strategy applied is paraphrasing, followed closely by literal translations and semantic equivalence, with omission, compensation and other strategies being of significantly less importance; 2. Literal translation has allowed certain English idioms to become part of Arabic lexis; 3. A disproportionately large number of the translations are literal and, therefore, sound “foreign” or are deemed void of sense to the Arab reader, 4. Literal (and therefore erroneous) translations in the target language arise primarily from the failure of the translator to decipher the meaning of the idiom in question. The last part revisits literal translation in order to understand its nature, reasons for its prevalence, its effect on the translated text and its impact on the Arabic language.

Abstract:
The rapid development of novel translations causes shifts in the word structure such as idioms where the meaning cannot be translated literally; thus, some strategies are needed in translating these idioms from the source language to the target language. This study aimed at identifying and analyzing the strategies used in idiom translating and the most dominant strategy used in “Perahu Kertas” novel by Dee Lestari to the English translated version translated by Tiffany Tsao. The method used in this research was descriptive qualitative where the collected data later be analyzed according to Baker’s idiom translation. The results showed that 9 translations using similar meaning and form strategy, 8 translations using similar meaning and dissimilar form, 23 translations by paraphrasing, and 8 translations by omission. The paraphrasing was the most used strategy in this translation with a percentage of 48%.

Abstract:
Abstract The use of ergative verbs results in the agent being backgrounded in an English sentence, and it is often used in the media together with other means such as the use of intransitive verbs, passives, and nominalized nouns to achieve the pragmatic purpose of accusation avoidance. A great deal of research has been done on the role of ergative verbs in media discourse in English as well as the acquisition of ergative verbs by learners of English as a Foreign Language (EFL). However, it remains unclear how EFL Chinese learners of advanced levels of competence, such as postgraduates of translation majors and professional translators, use ergative verbs when translating newspaper editorials from Chinese into English. Nor is it clear whether learners have acquired the requisite knowledge of ergative verbs in order to use them effectively so as to avoid blaming the agent of an action or process in translation. This study recruited 30 native Chinese-speaking translators who fell into three categories: undergraduate translators, graduate translators, and professional translators. A small parallel translation corpus was built, which consisted of 150 English translations of 5 Chinese editorials produced by the translators. Accusation-avoidance expressions in the source text and their translations were then extracted and input into an SPSS spreadsheet. The results show that the use of ergative verbs in translations by undergraduate translators is significantly higher than in translations by graduate and professional translators in terms of quantity. The results of the study may be useful for translation teaching and learning.

Abstract:
The latest neural machine translation not only performs better than systems that consider simple words and sentence structures, but also finds a delicate connection between source and target words. Neural machine translation provides a simple modeling mechanism that is easy to use in practice and science. Thus, it does not require concepts such as word ranking, a key component of the system that takes into account the structure of words and sentences. While this simplicity may be seen as an advantage, on the other hand, the lack of careful spelling is to lose control of the translation. Systems that take into account the structure of words and sentences create translations consisting of word sequences in the curriculum data. On the other hand, the neural machine translation is more flexible in terms of translations that don't exactly match the training data. This provides more opportunities for such models, but exempts translation from pre-determined restrictions. Failure to connect specific words can make it difficult to connect the target words you create to the original word. The widespread use of neural networks in the translation system has the advantage of allowing users to translate certain terms and translate uneducated data to a certain extent. In some cases, however, the structure of a sentence is often distorted. The paper is intended to address issues such as the control of neural machine translation, more accurate translation of unidentified data, the accuracy of sentence structure and grammar boundaries.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper addresses the unique challenges a translator would have when translating a text from a postcolonial country, especially one that has significance amongst the language speakers, such as Cilapattikaram. This paper compares three English translations of Cilapattikaram, a centuries-old Tamil poem that has an undeniable significance among the Tamil-speaking population. By analyzing three English translations of Cilapattikaram, done in the 1930s, 1960s, and 1990s, respectively, the paper examines how translation situated in the political space of decolonization and regional identity affects the text for a better understanding of the dilemmas of the translator and the effect of translation has on the meanings of the text.

Abstract:
Summary In Lithuanian public and academic discourse, discussions about the influence of English have received considerable attention. Much has been written on the English borrowings in Lithuanian or various translation strategies applied at word, phrase or syntactic levels of language, whereas there have been only few attempts to investigate how Lithuanian translated from English differs from original language. This is why we found it interesting to investigate lexical an morphological features of translated Lithuanian applying the methods of corpus liguistics. For research purposes, we used a morphologically annotated comparable 4 mln. word corpus of original and translated fiction and popular science literature ORVELIT. It has been found that translations deviate in certain ways from original Lithuanian. Translated Lithuanian has: a lower lexical density, higher proportion of function words, shorter sentences, and higher proportion of list heads; translated fiction has a lower lexical variability and smaller proportion of low frequency words, whereas in popular science translations, these differences are less evident. Keyword analysis has shown content differences in originals and translations and the overuse of personal and possessive pronouns in popular science translations. The distribution of content and function words differs in originals and translations and in different registers. Translated Lithuanian has: more verbs (especially finite forms and adverbial participles), but less nouns and adjectives; fiction translations have less and popular science more adverbs than originals; there are more pronouns and prepositions in both popular science and fiction translations; depending on the register, there are higher or lower numbers of conjunctions, particles and interjections. Some of the differences may be explained by the English language interference as: the overuse of the optional 1st person pronoun in subject position, the overuse of optional preposition “su” with instrumental case, or the overuse of optional link verb in the complex predicate. In other words, the English influence is seen in transferring certain features obligatory for analytical language where omission would be a more natural choice in original Lithuanian. These findings in most cases agree with the previous research on translationese of other languages. It is hoped that the identified tendencies to over- or under-use certain lexical and morphological features as a result of English language interference might appear to be useful when editing and translating.

Arhire, Mona. "Cohesive Devices in Translator Training: A Study Based on a Romanian Translational Learner Corpus." Meta 62, no. 1 (July 6, 2017): 155–77. http://dx.doi.org/10.7202/1040471ar.

Abstract:
Formal links are naturally associated with cohesion as one of the main features of discourse. Cohesion has been extensively discussed in the literature especially in terms of the mechanisms generating it, but also in terms of its equivalence in translation. As with any type of discourse, the communicative value of translated texts is enhanced by their cohesive texture. Less attention has been granted to the translation of formal links carrying additional functions though. This study examines some cohesive devices in student translations with a special focus on the translatability of ellipsis, substitution and reference when they are enriched with stylistic, sociolectal and rhetorical values. The study is based on a translational learner corpus consisting of Romanian graduate students’ translations of a short story from English into Romanian. The methodology for assessing and analyzing the learner corpus is of both quantitative and qualitative nature and employs simplification, explicitation and neutralization. The conclusions comprise insights into some problematic areas in the trainees’ translations, as well as observations related to contrastive aspects of cohesive devices between English and Romanian. A teaching methodology is subsequently derived from the findings in an attempt to offer a more comprehensive approach to the pedagogy of translating cohesive devices with stylistic load.
